Summary

Hosts Amy Sugarman and Daniel Romo discuss Gilmore Girls lore, including Lauren Graham's SMU connection and a shocking photo of Chad Michael Murray post-nose injury. They speculate on character trajectories 10 years after 'A Year in the Life' and explore pop culture connections to ADUs (Additional Dwelling Units).

Insights
  • Physical transformations from injuries can dramatically alter facial recognition and perceived identity, as evidenced by Chad Michael Murray's broken nose case
  • Gilmore Girls characters' futures likely involve established stability with evolved family dynamics, particularly multi-generational involvement in child-rearing
  • Television creators like Taylor Sheridan maintain creative control through mysterious, non-present production approaches while building expansive media franchises
  • Nostalgic fast food memories and childhood experiences shape adult consumer preferences and brand loyalty across generations
  • ADU representation in classic television shows reflects broader cultural patterns in housing and family structure narratives

Gilmore Girls Gazette with Amy Sugarman and Daniel Romo, an iHeart radio podcast. Good day, everybody. Good day. Good day. Good day. We're all having a good day. Put another shrimp on the ball. That's what it sounded like. Good day. You know, I'm always happy. I can't do accents. Right before Gilmore Girls Gazette. It's a good time. We have a great time. Me too. Can you do accents? Absolutely not. My husband is great at them. Oh, really? He can just do all kinds. So good. I can't do them. I would never be able to play like if I was an actor, like someone with an accent. You know, like Emily Blunt. Like when I know you wouldn't. She is so great. You know, the guy on 911, that one's the one that shocks me. So you know how I like 911? Yeah. The Buck Buckley Buck. He's British. You'd never know. Yeah, these people, these people that can act totally. I know. The entire scenes and different accents. Be brilliant. Your brain works in ways my do not. Better than us. What are we going to talk about first? I'm thinking Lauren Graham did this thing in Dallas. Does did anybody like some somebody did like some real research? Yeah, I know when we. I wish we went. We tried sending somebody from our team to this a while back and I know. And I think it was sold out or something like that. So we couldn't get to it. It was also kind of expensive and we needed to send somebody that is so expensive and we needed to send someone to Dallas. They would have sent us back a lot in our budget. Yeah. But yeah, I mean, so. She, you know, it's in it was in Texas, it was in Dallas. And I guess Lauren Graham lived there. Oh, that's why she did this. Got it. And so because she went to SMU, that's why she went to SMU. She went to SMU. Oh, now I need to know she's in a sorority master of fine arts degree. And I wonder if she was in a sorority. Now I need to know. Maybe. But she just she was like, I loved being here. I bounce a lot of checks here. Oh, that's hilarious. I used to bounce checks. That's so funny. Check bouncing is sort of a thing of the past because people don't really use right, you just get it overdraft. I didn't bounce too many, but like there were a check or two. You really had to be good at math back in the day. Right. And I definitely had people give me checks that bounced. You're like, hey, are you OK? Right. She talks about how she worked at a Mexican restaurant and gave away a bunch of margaritas and she was a frequent buyer of the Wendy's dollar menu. Oh my God, that's hilarious. And green elephant for happy hour. Does anybody know what green elephant? And don't but allegedly it is and all you can eat buffet. So like Sizzler kind of. Yeah, it sounds like she went to Wendy's. Have you gone to Wendy's? Oh my God. I I love Wendy's. Is Wendy the square burger? It's a square burger. I don't think I've ever been. The shake Frosty. They're called Frosty. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I think Eva Longoria eats Wendy's. I think I've seen her on her TikTok. Forgive me if I'm wrong. But I think you guys have not had a baked potato with a cheddar cheese. That's right. From Wendy's. Well, I can't eat cheese, but I can have butter. Head on over and order that today. Is it a good road trip stop? It's just get a Wendy's potato. You know, I I don't know what it was like when you went. We're in like elementary school, but we had early dismissal Fridays. OK. And we any time my mom would pick us up, all the kids would go to Wendy's after and we would all just get like a kids meal and just whatever. Not a big potato. Not then, but it was always when you were getting like happy meal, the Wendy's version. The little star chicken. I wonder what made your mom pick Wendy's? It was the one that was close to the school. It's interesting that I ate fast food as a kid. Has your kid ever had fast food? You know what we do? We are frequenters of Chick-fil-A. We love Chick-fil-A, but we don't do McDonald's. We don't do that. In and out. Love in and out. But we'd love to have McDonald's sponsor. I know McDonald's. Come on by. I love your soda. No, I like their fries. Here's the thing that I did learn this week. Yes. How to reheat and forgive me, because I'm sure everyone's groaning, going, Hey, idiot, we all know how to do that. I didn't realize you could reheat fries and make them crispy again. Air fryer, air fryer. Or what I actually just used is the air fryer tray, but I did it on bait because I don't really know how to use the air fryer. And it came out great. I overdid them, but they were great. I didn't know you could do that. So happy to do that. And I would do that with pizza, I think, too. I think that would work for pizza. Yeah, that would make sense. Wait. So she went to I thought, sorry, going backwards. She went to Barnard College, but then she also went to SMU. After struggling to break into theater in New York, attending undergrad at Barnard, she also did something at SMU. So she went undergrad at Barnard, but then she also went to SMU. Just want to make sure we get that. Oh, she was a graduate student at SMU. Good call up. She's legit. She's totally legit. He is legit. This picture has me like shook to my core. So the picture that she's referring to is child Michael Murray. I remember I literally tried everything, covering the nose to see if I could see. It doesn't even look like him. I don't even get it to give our listeners what we're talking about. So I remember the story, but he said that when he was 18 years old, he got jumped out of Burger King speaking of fast food, got jumped out of Burger King and his nose. I'm also happy to have them sponsor us because I don't think that happens. Right. He said that after he got jumped, his nose was on the other side of his face. And so when he was going to the doctor, they said it just means that it probably was like all the way over here, completely broken. So they reset it, yada, yada, yada. And everyone thinks that he got a nose job, but it actually looks like the reverse. Like it looks like his previous was a nose. Correct. Correct. So in his previous photo, he does not look the same. Like no, not at all. Crazy. How much a nose changes your look. Right. So his previous nose was like kind of dainty. Like, you know, like very, I had a little bit more of a point. Yeah, I had a point. It was very like narrow and just like, I don't even know who he looks like. And who's cuter? They're both cute. They just don't look like the same person. Broken nose, Chad, Michael Murray all day long. I just think both are cute. They just do not look like the same person at all. Post it on Instagram because you really have to see this to understand. To believe it. Because now his nose is bigger and at the bottom, it's whiter. So it changes his entire face. It's the face that we love. So there's that. The whole thing has just got me. It's just so crazy. You can when you look at it now, like when you look at this picture, you can see where his nose got broken. Oh, yeah, for sure. You see the difference in the nose, but like, it's so crazy how it changes the whole face. I know he's cute, though. I mean, if I went to seventh grade with him and then didn't see him again, I'd have no idea that this was the same person. Well, and you know what? Justice to Zac Efron, who claims the same thing. I actually believe Zach. Because they say his face looks entirely different and everyone's like, you got a facelift and he's like, no, I just broke my jaw and my face changed. I believe that. I believe that, you know, so I believe that. Yeah, I did too. So Ariel Cabell, we love her, Lindsay. Justice for Lindsay talks about how, you know, she's on Marshals and it's a Taylor Sheridan show. And she said no one ever sees him. And I've heard the same thing over and over again. All these different shows that he creates, he's not like ever present there. You got to like school. You got to school me here. But like what what it has? Oh, Yellowstone, Madison, 1823, 1923. I think it's I got the years wrong there. It's 18 shows that I watch. But OK, correct. But Dutton, all these shows, he's kind of like the man right now. OK, Landman. He's the man. He's the man. And I guess he's very like doesn't it's not like he's just on the set. I think he writes it. I thought he casts it, but I could be wrong on that. I don't know. But anyway, I thought that's I like being mysterious. I would want to be mysterious. Yeah. We hear with all of our shows, we don't go to every recording. We're just correct. Right. Sometimes we're just omnipresent. Is that the word? I don't know what the word is. Wait, this is kind of exciting. The casting announcements for Nobody Wants This Season Three. Yes. Obviously, Adam Brody and Kristen Bell reprised their roles. But the part that there's two people that I'm really excited about. So person number one, Sarah Silverman coming up to play Rabbi. I think she's going to be. Yeah, yeah, really good. Lay Reyes. Erin Foster. Whoa, that's kind of wild. She helped create the show. She's she's going to now star in it. And she plays a terminally single, chaotic and somewhat messy person. She's Joanne, if everything had gone wrong in her life. Oh, interesting. So that should be interesting. I'm curious to see how she plays out. Andrew Rinalds, you know, you know who that is. Yes. He he does a lot of jobs. And he's always kind of a fun little moment in shows. Right. Right. I'm not mad about it. I'm more excited about Stephen Weber. Interesting. I like don't know who that is. Stephen Weber is on Chicago Med. And he was on Wings with Tim Daly. Some people are like, which one? I see a picture. Which one is Tim Daly? Now I know. But he's just like a really cool actor. Also, weirdly, was driving on sunset and he was in the car right next to me the other day. I was like, it's kind of interesting. Oh, that's cool. But I don't he must be working a lot because he has to do Chicago Med in Chicago. Right. Now he's back here. He's doing he's Julian, a funny, grounded, cool and secure, divorced dad. So I wonder how we're going to get him in there. But happy about it. Is there any others? There's there's a few others. I mean, Kayla Montoroso. I don't know who any of those others are. Yeah, I don't know any of these other names, but I'm excited about those that we just listed. So excited. Do we have a premiere date? I don't think so. I don't think so. I feel like we just watched the second one. Yeah, it was this past fall. Remember. Let's talk about modern home shopping. It's sort of become a fun side hobby, right? I remember this, and you have to tell me if my memory... You can have this just like a thing? You have to tell me if my memory serves me correct. But back in the day, when we had Melissa... Amy and I also worked on it on Arrow's rice vinegar. Yes, we had Melissa McCarthy on, and we called the Brentwood Starbucks, which is the one that she actually worked at. I think it was Santa Monica to be exact. I think it was on Montana, if I'm gonna be really... It was on Montana, that's why I thought Brentwood. It was Santa Monica, but you're good. And yeah, we called the Starbucks with her and paid for everyone's coffee, and it was at the store, it was super fun. But that was one of her first jobs in LA, was working at Starbucks, Melissa McCarthy, how cool. Well, and then tell what happened the other day. Yeah, so she is going through the Starbucks drive-thru, but in Burbank, and the person in front of her bought her coffee. So cute. She said, I made her day. Yeah, that's so cute. I love, that's happened to me before, where I've been in a Starbucks line, and they're like, oh, the person in front of you bought your food. And then I was like, great, I'll buy the person behind me. And you just cross your fingers, they are buying for like 20 people. I know, you're like $112. Starbucks is so expensive. We used to do that on the bridge, but now you can't do it anymore because there's no told plazas anymore in San Francisco. But if you're not from San Francisco, there's lots of bridges. Like we have to take bridges to get places. I don't take a bridge every day, but like definitely a couple of times a week. And you used to have to pull up to the toll booth and you just pay cash. Then they got fast track or whatever, but now you just drive through, but you used to go like, here's my money. I think it was like a couple bucks. And now it's like eight, 10 more. And then you'd say, and for the car behind me. That's so cool. And then the toll bridge person would wave the person through, you know, go on through. So cool. Yeah. I love when you're in the middle of something like that. They don't have toll plus. Toll booth, toll plaza, toll booth. I think it was called toll booth. Yeah. But I think it was also called the toll plaza. But I might be making that up. I got to Google that. Now I'm like, what? So the TV insider did a article, Goma Girls, A Year in the Life, Turn 10. What we think the characters are up to now. I know, I know. Well, we think the characters are up to now. If you want to go read it, whatever, go check them out. We can link it in our Instagram. But I want to hear what you think. And then I'll tell you what I think too. So let's start with Lorelei. Where do you think Lorelei is now 10 years after A Year in the Life? I think they're totally still married. He's running the diner. She's running the inn. And they have a very similar life to what they had 10 years before, but the grandchild is now 10. So I think that's the change. That they're like heavily involved. I didn't even think of the grandchild. So they're heavily involved in the raising of the grandchild. That's funny you say that because I was saying, before you answered in my head, I said, they are, you know, they're living their lives with Rory and April. They love, you know, their little family unit. I was like, they do not have kids of their own. I think that they're happy with her too. I didn't even process. Yeah. And I think April's married. Oh, you think April's married. Okay, interesting. Yeah, I don't know if she has kids yet, but I'm going to say. And Emily Gilmore is a great grandmother and she's totally involved. And she moved back to be closer. That's what I think. I love that. Okay, Rory Gilmore, what do you think about Rory? What do you think she's like? I think she finally got her together because I was so irritated by how like, so she's like amazing career woman. I think maybe she's like the biggest podcast host there is doing like news, like on a podcast. So she can do it from wherever. And she's got a 10 year old and she's married to Logan. Oh, okay. I think she realizes that Logan is the kid's father. Yep. And they have that revelation. But I will say, I don't think that they are together. I think that they are happily co-parenting and they couldn't make it work. No, I think they're totally together. And he's more of a stay at home dad because that gives us something interesting to watch. And she is this podcast journalist going all around like, you know, Christiane on Montpour, but she does it on a podcast. And they live in Stars Hollow. They've built like a fancy house on the edge of town. I think Logan's a stay at home dad. I think Logan definitely, definitely more like very involved with what she's doing. She is, but he's the stay. This is, I'm just giving you what I think. And yeah, that's what I think. Interesting. And he's estranged from his family. I would not be surprised by that. Kind of a la the way Lorelai was at the beginning of Gilmar Girls. And we talked about this so much, the parallels between Logan and Lorelai. They are one in the same. So he's estranged from his family, but they're kind of trying to, they really want to have a relationship with their grandchild. So it's sort of, you know, reminiscent of. Yep, yep. Okay, thank you. I love that. Making this up as I go, but I feel like I'm doing okay. What about Luke Luke? Oh, he's doing great. He's just totally happy as a clam. I think he franchised. I think he did. No, I think he did. I think he has not like Luke's diner in a different city, but I think he has another something in Stars Hollow. Like I feel like he has a take and go section. Correct. Or here's what I think. I think he made a line of salad dressings or pasta sauces and that took off, but just the one diner. So that you can buy the like carbon, you know how you can buy this sauce anywhere. Maybe he has coffee in the grocery store. I'll ask. Exactly. That's what I think. Coffee. Yep. Good call. Okay. What about Paris? And Doyle. They're back together. That was ridiculous that they were apart. Totally ridiculous. And they're both, aren't they both lawyers or something? Yeah. I mean, she definitely is. Oh no, he's sort of like a screenwriter like he is in real life. They are rich, eddy, rich, rich, rich. And the teenagers, they have teens now and they're totally like bad. Oh, you think so? Yeah. They're like bad. They're always getting in trouble. Yeah. I could see that. I could actually see that. Yeah. And yeah, and Paris is just pissed. She's just so mad that her kids are bad and she's just like, you guys better be good kids. I love that. Lane and Zach, I mean, the worst storyline of all time. I'm so sorry, Lane and Zach. And you know what? This is not what I think happens, but I hope this happens that the kids go to school and Lane is like, you know what? I'm going to be a badass again. I'm going to be so cool. I'm going to either go on tour or I'm going to do this job and finally like get some like mojo back. I feel like they just did her character so much in Justice. I hate it. I don't even know what I want to do with them. I know. I know. Put a pin in them. I don't even know. We talked about Emily. I think she's moved back and she lives in Star's Hollow now too. Yeah. And I feel like she's doing all her clubs and her activities and. OK, do you want me to know my Jess? In a shocking twist. OK. Logan and Jess. Her friends are totally friends and he's like an uncle to the kid, but he just comes in from time to time. Oh, sorry. I just barfed in my mouth. Just saying. And he's got like a totally great wife and they have three kids. No chance. No chance. OK, fine. I think Jess is not in Star's Hollow. I think he is in New York or LA or wherever he is crushing it. And he doesn't live in Star's Hollow. I don't think so either. And I think Rory calls him when she needs help and advice. Like, hey, you are the one who's that knows me. Like I need you to tell me what I should be doing right now. And he is just like kind of her mini mentor. I'm not mad at that. I'm not mad at that. Secretly like Logan doesn't know because Logan would get mad if he knew. No, I don't. That's just too redundant and like repetitive. No, they're friends. They're fine. They became friends in my world. No, because really Jess and Rory should be together. They are the soulmates. They are the ones destined to be together, but she's with Logan. We'll see. And in a final funny little bit I found on the Internet, I saw this headline. What do Gilmore Girls, Full House and Happy Days have in common? Now, I didn't know this about Full House. I do know it about Gilmore Girls, although so basically it's saying they all embrace ADUs. What does ADU stand for? It stands for? Additional Dwelling Unit. Yes. But is the pool house an ADU? If it has a kitchen and a restroom, then it can be. Yeah. OK, so we get it for Gilmore Girls and Happy Days, obviously. The most iconic ADU ever up the stairs for the Fonz. Full House did well. I thought they all lived in the house. I don't. The attic in full. But that's not an ADU. Oh, because did they build a kitchen up there? I don't think that technically it's an ADU if it's the attic. It's in the same dwelling. You have to correct me if I'm wrong. But an ADU has to have a separate address. That's what I thought. No, I don't think it has a separate address. It's a separate dwelling. It has to be a separate address because you register it. So what is it, number B? Yeah, like A, B or like whatever, a different number. Something about. Got it. Interesting. Cute bit. Cute bit. Yeah, I like it. And that's the news. And that's the news. Hey, everybody. Don't forget, follow us on Instagram at IAMALL in podcast and email us at Gilmore at iheartradio.com. Honestly, honestly. Honestly, no one wants to think about HIV. But there are things that everyone can do to help prevent it. Things like PrEP. PrEP stands for pre-exposure prophylaxis. And it means routinely taking prescription medicine before you're exposed to HIV to help reduce your chances of getting it. PrEP can be about 99% effective when taken as prescribed. It doesn't protect against other STIs, though. So be sure to use condoms and other healthy sex practices. Ask a health care provider about all your prevention options. And visit find out about PrEP.com to learn more. Sponsored by Gilead. What's up, cousin? I want a new phone. Have you seen any good deals? Everyone has free phones.
