Summary

Internal Affairs Part 5 concludes The Leviathan Chronicles' special edition mini-series, revealing that protagonist Celeste Harris was unknowingly used as a tracking beacon by Black Door intelligence agency to locate and neutralize a rival door operative's enforcer virus project. The episode explores themes of betrayal, sacrifice, and the moral costs of espionage as Celeste confronts her handler and discovers her life has been weaponized.

Insights
  • Intelligence agencies may deploy operatives as unwitting assets, using personal risk and false mission parameters to achieve strategic objectives without informed consent
  • Narrative unreliability in espionage fiction reflects real-world compartmentalization where field agents operate on incomplete information for operational security
  • Character-driven storytelling in audio drama can effectively convey emotional complexity and moral ambiguity through intimate dialogue and internal monologue
  • Serialized content repurposing (original feature-length episode split into 5-part mini-series) can enhance engagement and audience retention for legacy content
  • The intersection of personal relationships and covert operations creates narrative tension that explores the human cost of intelligence work
Trends
Audio drama revival: Legacy content from 15 years ago being repackaged and re-released to new audiences through podcast distributionExpanded universe development: Single story episodes being used as launching points for broader fictional universes and spin-off seriesComposer-led audio production: Original music composition becoming central to episode identity with custom theme variations per installmentPatreon-gated premium content: Ad-free versions and bonus content driving subscription models for independent audio productionSerialized storytelling strategy: Feature-length narratives being deliberately restructured as multi-part series to increase listener touchpoints

And you're about to listen to the final episode of Internal Affairs. This is the first of our special edition episodes. This was certainly one of my favorites that we had put out close to 15 years ago. And this is part five, the finale of what happens to Celeste Harris of door number 20. Yeah, I hope everyone's enjoyed listening to Internal Affairs. If you've been listening to our interest at the beginning of each episode, you know this kind of we've opened the vault to pull this episode out from 15 years ago. We originally, when we made this episode, it was intended as one sort of big feature length standalone story. So it wasn't broken up into parts like you've been listening to it now. And we took a look at it and said, you know what? Why don't we turn this into a mini series for everyone who's been listening in the podcast feed? And you know, I'm surprised at how well it worked as kind of a mini season of in the Leviathan universe. If you are curious to listen to it, as it was originally intended as one episode, it's still available that way. Add free on our Patreon. But it's also I think worked really well as a series. So I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as we enjoyed listening to it again. Yeah, and here in part five, you'll, if you've been listening, this is kind of a little bit less of an action-packed installment. This is more of kind of the story sort of resolves itself and we get some like, I think really strong acting performances from our cast. And I was reminded listening to this, that this is actually thinking back to 15 long years ago, I believe, and we were talking about this before we recorded. I think this is the first, first Leviathan Chronicles project where I was the sole composer of this one. That is so amazing. It's hard to imagine you not doing everything all the time, but we had, yeah, I mean, this is... And I'm thinking back, yeah, I'm pretty sure, yeah, I had moved to Austin from New York, like not too long before this and you guys reached out and said, hey, you want to take a stab at this? And I was like, you know, I'm working one day, a week at a Mexican restaurant downtown Austin, like, yeah, it's on my hands. So why don't I do it? And yeah, this, I feel like I, especially the final scene here, which you'll see, I don't want to spoil anything, but I feel like the music actually kind of slaps. So... Well, I really like how you redid the theme song to internal affairs. And for our listeners, one of the fun things that Luke has done is for each of the five special edition episodes, internal affairs being the first, you have actually redone and created new theme songs for each of the five all being inspired by the original Leviathan Chronicles themes and you reinterpreted that melody for the plots of each of the different flavors of the five different shows. Yep. And yeah, so this one you get kind of like a high-tech SB&R's vibe and then, you know, you'll have to wait and see what comes next after this one. Well, one of the things that I really liked about internal affairs and specifically this last part, part five, is how interconnected this show is with this larger universe of a black door. And we were going to use this episode really as a launching point to do another audio drama series called the Black Door Files. And we're still trying to figure out if we want to do it through audio or through a series of short stories. But there are a lot of threads in here. That we were looking to pull and are going to pull to expand the universe further. And that was always the invention with the special edition episodes to take a deeper dive into specific subjects and specific characters within the Leviathan universe. And I think there's a lot of kind of templates that get created in this episode that really informed a lot of what we did after that. So we won't keep you waiting much longer. Do you want to let you know that even though internal affairs is ending, we are still going to continue releasing things every week. We will continue going back into the Leviathan Vault to bring you some old episodes that aren't currently in the podcast feed. And so next week we will be starting a new mini series with the Rogue Plague, which is an origin story of Harlequin and his relationship with Evangeline, as well as an origin story for everyone's favorite immortal bartender, Angus McKay. So you have that to look forward to next week. But for now, let's sit back and enjoy internal affairs part five. Enjoy. Enjoy. The first thing Celestra remembers was the medical team rushing in and injecting her with powerful antibiotics and putting her in a steroid drip. They whisked her onto a massive fairly rotodine FB10, a huge auto gyro aircraft that resembled the fuselage of a small jet with one single immense rotor on top. The small triage hospital was contained within the center and a team of doctors immediately began working on Celest. Over the next several hours she faded in and out of consciousness, but she could distinctly recall seeing Dumpfus staring at her from the corner of the room with his hands folded on his chin. Dumpfus hadn't lied, door 20 had indeed secured the station and the data banks contained therein were already confiscated and being analyzed. There was more than enough evidence contained inside to affect a door lock procedure, thus freezing all assets worldwide and effectively putting an execution contract on anyone associated with door number 12. It would be effectively erased from the face of the earth. The FB10 flew her to a charted vessel where she spent the next few days recuperating before beginning her long journey home to New York. The first stop would be Antanan Arevo, the capital of Madagascar, before switching planes in Cairo that would take her back to a secure airfield in New Jersey. From there a discrete black tanker would drive her back to her apartment in Manhattan. To say she was exhausted was an understatement. Every nerve in her body felt afraid and she felt burdened with a vague sense of failure despite everyone's congratulations at her mission's success. The confusion lingered in her like a bad cold. That was, until somewhere over the Atlantic, Celeste felt a soft tap on her shoulder. Excuse me, Agent Harris, you have a secure can't talk on. Thank you. She walked to the rear of the jet where a small room slightly larger than a standard airline laboratory housed a secure, high encryption video conference interface, Celeste sat down and tapped the screen to accept the call. Hello Celeste. Hardwick. Congratulations on the move. Don't start. Don't you fucking start that protocol shit with me. I'm sorry Celeste. Why did you choose me? I beg your pardon. This was a combat mission from day one. That's not my specialty. I wasn't trained for that heart. An Indian and an agent that could break the Nancatsu encryption. You were the most appropriate asset. Asset? I'm a fucking person. You get that hardwink. Stop. You took the oath. You accepted placement within Black Door. You knew what would be at stake. You're not about to get any apologies. You completed the mission. I failed. I never got access to the data core in Nancatsu. I was gasped. I failed, Hardwick. No, no you didn't Celeste. You did exactly what you were supposed to do. You unlocked the Nancatsu mainframe in Tokyo and released when it was protecting. The most guarded secret in Nancatsu, the enforcer virus. There was no data core Celeste. No bank accounts. We wanted the virus. We couldn't tell you that at the beginning of the mission. What? Look, you've been through a lot Celeste. How would you know? How exactly would you know what I've been for? What happened in Tokyo, Hardwick? How did I get from Nancatsu industries to a hotel room? Why did I kill two scientists? You didn't kill the scientists. We did. You knew. There never were any bank accounts linking D12 and Nancatsu in the mainframe. The virus was what was encrypted. You knew I'd be infected. You knew the whole time. You fucking sent me off. I needed to gain control and access the virus for the enforcer projects. Why not just steal a sample? Why did I have to get my DNA fucked with Hardwick? To flush out the enemy, the second objective. We needed to create urgency for door number 12. The dead bodies in the hotel room. I created the appearance of the virus made you contagious and homicidal. We needed you on the run and for Tokyo law enforcement to press on you, we needed you to believe it as well. Why? Why Hardwick? As soon as you broke into the headquarters, Jason Sterling and door number 12 knew you had the only copy of the enforcer virus inside your body. After you stole or infected with the only copy in the Katsu headquarters, you instantly became an incredibly valuable asset. The murder rap put you on the run. You fled like we knew you would. We framed you to move up the timetable and force door number 12's hand. If law enforcement apprehended you first, Sterling would lose the virus and the ability to recreate the enforcer army forever. They had to come out in the open to catch you. We just followed the breadcrums home. Door number 12 had to get me back to Asgard before I could get arrested. They had to move fast before I got shot. You used me to draw door number 12 out into the open. You used me as fucking base. As soon as they captured you, we suspected they would take you to Asgard station, the base of the enforcer project for harvesting. For years we'd be looking for this facility. As door 12's power grew, the enforcement division knew that we had to find the exact location of their operation. With the locator beacon contained in your abdomen, you let us directly to it. As I told you, I can always find you, no matter where you are. Needless to say, it worked. We used you as a live tracking beacon and successfully secure the station and can now institute a full door lock. This mission was to success Celeste. You are an exceptional agent. I despise you hard way. But you also know that it was necessary, especially after what you've seen. It was the only way that we can't even begin to calculate how many lives you saved by the sacrifices you've had to endure. I know you don't want to hear this, but you're a hero Celeste, a hero. Celeste stared out of the window of the private jet and watched the dying light of dusk burn through the shallow clouds of the stratosphere. You framed me for murder. The scientists had to die in order to cocock the story that you were patient zero. It was the only way to flesh out the target Celeste and you know it. You fucked me hard work. You hung me out it Celeste, I'm only going to say this once. This is Black Door. The highest level of intelligent service in the world. You accepted recruitment. You were trained by the best. You knew exactly what you were getting into. Like I said, you're not going to get any apologies from me. You did what was asked of you. That's all any of us can do. If you're telling me you want out, you say the word now. Celeste, step back at hard work. It doesn't matter now anyway. I'm a dead asset. You've got my name and face in every law enforcement database from NYPD to Mosah. The world thinks I'm an infectious serial killer. I couldn't buy a newspaper in an airport. We're already taking care of it. We're going to initiate a termination deployment. Provide you with a new cover. We'll get your name cleared in my death. You're going to fake my death and give me a new identity. A new name, a new face. I've done it before. Celeste turned to look out of the window again and realized that she had no choice. Fine. You've done your country a great service Celeste. We've learned far more about door 12 than we ever suspected through the mainframes it has guard station. It's allowed us to zero in on their other enforcer operations around the world. What what do you mean? What other operations? We discovered that door number 12 has mounted some sort of alpine expedition into Bet. We've tracked them down to a single mound called Cheng Long. We use some of our high orbit resonance satellites to get more intel. The bird showed very unusual levels of radiation and intense heat signatures, consistent with what we know about enforcer technology. So how do we? According to our intel, they may have another door operative with them. My Lee, door number three. Signo American. She's one of the best black door assets and she may be helping their top operative with Roberts. Door number three, but that doesn't make any sense. Hardwick, send me the intel they on. So we're on to stop. I want you to take the next 60 days off. Consider it a mandatory vacation. Go someplace nice. Some place quiet. I'll make sure your inactive status stays that way. Grab some clothes then get out of New York. In the meantime, D20 is assembling a strike force to attack the target in Tibet. If we can insert... I want in. In what? The strike force in Tibet. I want to be part of it. Celeste, this is a combat mission. You just said you worked training. I wasn't trained to be a fucking guinea pig for a virus. I wasn't trained to be a fugitive and I sure as hell was a train for combat mission in Asgard station. But since you just said that mission was a success, I guess I must be really good at improvising. I want in. Celeste, you're no condition to... It's my bust, Hardwick. My bust. I'm in. You owe this to me. You use me as bait. It's gone damn bait. You don't dare fuck me on this hard work. Fine, fine, you're in. The strike force leaves in 72 hours, but you better be damn sure you get yourself ready, Celeste. Our group is going to war against two other doors. That's never happened before. We are going in and we are not bringing back prisoners. So leave all your demons and whatever they did to you back on Asgard station. No, no Hardwick. I'll be taking them with me. Hi, this is Rob Benedict. And I am Richard Spate. We were both on a little show you might know called Supernatural. It had a pretty good run, 15 seasons, 327 episodes. And though we have seen of course every episode many times, we figured, hey, now that we're wrapped, let's watch it all again. And we can't do that alone. So we're inviting the cast and crew that made the show along for the ride. We've got writers, producers, composers, directors, and we'll of course have some actors on as well, including some certain guys that played some certain pretty iconic brothers. It was kind of a little bit of a left field choice in the best way possible. The note from Krypki was, he's great. We love him, but we're looking for like a really intelligent decovney type. With 15 seasons to explore, it's going to be the road trip of several lifetimes. So please join us and subscribe to Supernatural, then and now. She landed just past one in the morning, which meant the George Washington bridge would be mostly clear of delays. Her town cars spread across the bridge and headed south on the FDR drive. Sleses stared out the window at the black water of the East River and didn't even notice when the car exited on 34th Street. She felt so dead inside and outside. The town car pulled to the curb of 35th Street in 3rd Avenue. Sleses moved in slow motion, exiting the car, almost forgetting to grab her duffel bag from the trunk. She felt sluggish, but on the other hand there was no rush anymore. No urgency. Life in New York simply went on without her. As if none of it, Black Door, Asgard or even the aliens ever existed, her faithful dormans stood at his post outside her building. Ready as ever to open the door for the investment bankers, trust fund kids and single moms living in Sleses building, whose ordinary lives simply went on, despite Sleses' subversive world of nefarious intelligence work that silently swirled around them unknowingly. Even in Miss Harris? Hi Eddie. It's getting cold out. Yeah, I don't know. Sleses walked through the lobby of her building and pushed the 20th floor button in the elevator. She leaned against the wall and fuddled for the house keys in her pockets. She found the right one and stared at it for a moment. It seemed odd to hold such a pedestrian object in her hand. Not a walther, P.P.K. Not a day of file. It's just a key. Like, everyone else uses every day. Sleses walked into her apartment and dropped her bag by the door. Her two bedroom apartment was neat and tidy, with a generous sunken living room and a 12-foot beam ceiling. Clearly the housekeeper had been there recently, but for the life of her, Sleses couldn't recall when. The kitchen was an open layout that spilled out onto the living room. Her footsteps were slow, but Sleses made her way to the refrigerator and opened the door. The refrigerator was empty, safe for a box of baking soda, a jar of peanut butter, and a 1994 bottle of Spotswood Cabinay Sourvignon. Upon spying the bottle, the left side of her mouth turned up just a tiny fraction, and Sleses realized it was the closest thing to a smile she had felt in a week. She poured herself a generous glass and then walked to the bathroom while rubbing the back of her sore neck. I know exactly what I need. A hot bath. I just need to get in the water and so go away. Everything. One of Sleses' favourite earthly delights was a steaming hot bath. She could spend hours warmly submerged reading a book or simply daydreaming about prime number theory. She allowed her clothing to fall to the floor and then brought the cold glass of wine with her into the warm tub. The hot water felt good, so good. Good enough that Sleses began to laugh out loud as the heat penetrated her punished muscles. It felt so good to laugh, and then suddenly, without understanding why she began to cry. Her tears were private and genuine, and Sleses owned them fully. She yearned to disconnect from the noxious memory of everything that had happened to her, and now finally cocooned from the rest of the world in her own private temple. Sleses allowed herself to shed her black door identity for just a moment and tried to remember who she actually was. This was her life as a spy, but at least for one quiet moment, she was safe now. Sleses stirred from her relaxed state in the water and wrinkled her nose in confusion. She distinctly remembered putting her phone on vibrate, so the ring took her by surprise. She reached over to her pile of clothes on the floor and dug her cell phones in the pocket of her jeans. She pressed the call button. Hello Samantha. Oh, oh my god, oh, and how are you baby? I really missed you. I missed you so much. I know. I've been really, really hard to get a hold of, but I'm back in town now. That's okay Sam. Seriously, don't worry about it. Talk to me, Owen. How are you? What's what's going on? I'm okay. Sort of. Look, we need to talk Samantha. Celeste Hart sank. She knew this tone and she knew this talk and her heart tightened painfully. What what's wrong, Owen? You seem... I'm really sorry Sam. No, no Owen, I'm sorry. I'm the one that should be apologizing to you. Look, Owen. Samantha, stop. There's someone here. Hello Samantha. Who is it? Agent Celeste Harris. No. Do you know who I am? You're Jason Sterling. Door chief number 12. I am also the one who stationed you rated. Whose years of work you destroyed. Whose people you killed. Whose experiments you ruined. You knew damn well those experiments were a violation of Black Door Code in every form of human rights. You started this when your people opened fire in Sanctuary. You just thought that no law applied to you. You don't even know what you've done. How much danger you put this country in. If it wasn't me, then another agent would... I beg your pardon. I won't tell you anything. No, of course you won't tell me anything. That's because there's nothing I need to know. That's not the reason for this call. This call is to tell you that there's nothing I want from you. And that there's nothing you can do to stop this. No, no! Stop! It's not easy for me to leave the confines at Akiron, but in this case I was willing to make an exception. You bastard! You fucking demon! I'll kill you! He had nothing to do with any of this. And to be perfectly clear, this is only the beginning. I will make sure that you are alone for the rest of your natural life. You're already an outlaw in every civilized country in the world. You'll never be able to have a job. The family will walk through the streets without fear. That the local law enforcement will throw you into some black ops prison. Black door will clear my name. They'll make sure that my- Maybe they will. Maybe they won't. But I can tell you this for sure. You will never be able to have anyone close to you again. If I ever see you having more than two conversations with someone, they'll die. They'll die in horrible ways that will weigh on you like an endless burden. You can never shake. You'll never kiss someone. Hold the love's hand or find another shoulder to cry on for the rest of your life. And when I'm done with you, you walk the other way. When you see a person you recognize, you'll learn to never talk, touch, or look at another human being again. And make no mistakes, Celest. I am watching you. I'll always be. Have a lovely bad Celest. Let the black door war begin. You have been listening to Internal Affairs, a Leviathan Chronicles story.
