Yeah, they're amazing For the first time since like 2002 So, man, I can't say enough about how happy we are about to start you think they're legit super bowl contenders They are I think so because you guys think a lot of things and football is based on the leadership right and I believe we got some of the best leadership qualities in Jim Harlow and staff And I think you see it right because when you think about the players I mean you think about the high names the big names we got a few guys, you know the Cleans and the Kenis and the obviously Justin her and Derwin of course, but They play together so well man as a team I think that's the foundation of winning football and you see it You see it in the first two weeks and hopefully they can carry that on throughout the season You are part of so many talented teams. I mean you Philip Rivers the Daniel Talinson like such a dynamic trio um You had so many seasons were like 2010 for example you have the league's best offense leagues best defense last and special teams Right during the aFC with Tom Brady and Peyton Manning You guys just the town was off the charts, but we're unable to get to that superbow mark What do you think is gonna separate this charger team versus those ones? Well, I think it's uh, you know Sometimes it's this the look of the drawing terms of the momentum I really feel like they have a momentum going Uh, like I said it starts with the leadership, which is it's the head coach right starting for the general manager on die And I think they believe I think what you see when you start winning games close games like the last one They just won you start to feel a sense of belief and I think that's the separation when it gets down to the last two minutes of the fourth quarter You believe and you got it. Yeah, you're believing in your teammates. You ain't got it. We got it We've been here before so I guess that's the reinforcement when you actually win those games You talk about that 2010 we were losing those games So it's the reverse psychology you start like man, I hope we pull this one off And so I think they believe and I think that's the most It's like you're just like an aw shock when you View those rosters and like you try to encapsulate the greatness L. You know I was saying so We together at that moment In eight to like 14 we was just a great group together. Yeah, yeah at one point you had hoop dreams obviously Ended up being NFL a favor but talk to me about that process coming out of college is you're the only NFL a favor to never play college football I know man You know I'm still rapping my head around it all right to be honest with you. It was a situation where I you know I put most my skin in the game was in the game of basketball So for those who didn't know and some of you some people do know now because the story's been out there But my whole philosophy was that I wanted to go to the NBA I mean you wouldn't have been able to tell me at 21 years old that I wouldn't go into the NBA Since I was in high school. I was on American high school player. I was on American college player I was close to 30 points in high school. I was 20 in college So I just I never all my friends the friendships that I created High School from the Magic Romball Classic to ABCD camps was all basketball So you fast forward it and I go to the NFL right and all of a sudden I'm planning in a field and I'm the only guy That's going straight to locker Like literally I remember being a rookie and I was literally the only guy just all my friends is an NBA or playing overseas or whatever So the concept was just that God's you know What he wants for you Trump's whatever you got going on man, and that's the storyline that I always say Do you still hoop now this man? No, I do not man. I know I don't play Um, and I should play I should play because guys you know, they always give me crap about not You know playing basketball but My body man the game of football is so you know, it takes so much out of you when you play at the level that I was playing at I play with everything bro torn this you know torn hips high-end spray broken ribs you name it You know dislocated toe and so now I mean, I don't even you know my kids actually need to do some I quickly tell them I got 10,000 yards on these legs. I'm about to go grab this So that's the concept I just don't do that no more man. I'm involved with my kids, and I just I watch yeah watch all these You know pale coaches act like they know what they turn about and I just listen You know, yeah, I'm one of them parents. I sit back and I make the observation. I don't I don't dive in I let my son get taught by the right coaches and I just listen I'd be apparent at the games with that makes sense. Yeah, I don't come in. That's the hall of favor Yeah, you know me or the pro football we've all been there You know, you know those parents is all yeah, I'm like I just sit back and when he get home All my daughter gets home from body ball. I just tell him This is what I think you should do to improve. Yeah, and I try to allow them to how they own path man They're good dad man. Yeah, man. Yeah, absolutely man. You made that transition from basketball to football If you had to pick one NBA player today that you think would transition best to the NFL. Who would it be? I will say this man I like tough and anything people always ask me who the best between and I'm gonna get to your point But people always ask me who's the best athlete between the football player and the basketball player and from my experience and plan When you good you good when you tough it's generally the tough kids You know saying no flourish So if you if you plan on a high level in the NBA Because it's more of a mindset than it is anything else So I would think that most of the guys who become all pro Will go to the next level whatever the broad James the I mean, you know, you name it the yonness onto Cooper. I mean, I'd be course, you know like You know the way drape my plays. Yeah I mean, it's so many of them, but the guys that plays And my in my opinion in a space of being tough Those are the guys that make the transition the guys that prevail when things get tough things get rocket. They find the way Those are the guys when I see it in a watch them the guys I think that can make the transition and most of those guys are probably be tight in I even want to watch Steph Curry in smaller. See is I'm sure he can go play defensive backward We see you know, I'm saying yeah, he finds a way right so that's just It's a mindset pretty much that's what I mean when I got to the NFL I just found a way just like I would do in basketball. I would just find a way right and that's the competitive edge That most of them have I'm sure that they can make the transition for someone like LeBron. I mean six foot eight two six the Bass you let like if he made that decision to play in that NFL. I think there were any stopping him I mean he'll be the whole family of rights as a player receiver whatever he was Yeah, it's because it's because you know what things the attributes like I say is the attributes that gets you today in a fail gets you to the NBA But the mindset you're will Mm-hmm the things that you can't test at these combines at these NBA camps those are the things That you've laid out you to make the change in terms of how you are all pro or you are It gives you tear it makes layers and I think LeBron has it. He's the all-time league score He had to have a mindset All right, so he'll take that mindset and play receiver. I know he played receiver high school And I'm sure he'll probably be one of all-time league receivers I you know, I'm saying so I'm sure Jerry Rice can go into court and you know I don't know what he's doing, but he had that mindset so the mentality is even more important than the physicality because it's a formula And ain't what you're doing you know saying if they wanted to do it in business And that's why you see so many people who fall short They become in business and they still become successful because they have what we consider competitive Nature competitive edge and I'll let you allow them to flourish when the time comes I have a question so I'm a streamer and obviously in your career Just they discipline stay motivated like sometimes for me like I was streaming I'm like, you know tomorrow the next day. I'm like I don't want to do it. I'm tired. I can't think of anything I don't want to get up and have to do all this. How do you like stay locked in just in general Man, it's it's tough right so that's what makes the difference I think that's where you see the emotions running when you get to the hall of fame and you up to speaking right or you because what happens is that What success looks like to me as you get tired today you wake up and you get tired tomorrow You get tired again It's like it's the consistency of doing the same things over and over and I think once you start tallying up Weeks after weeks months after months you do a year And that comes all it's like the same thing nothing really changes since we've been a kid You know, I mean myself since I've been a kid. I will say I've been hearing the same thing Work hard. Yeah, right. You know work hard. Yeah, work hard. So it's been happening day in and day out I get the head I get the same noise I get up. I get tired I don't feel like doing this just again And it's kind of like those the same formula like you put into it what you want out of it And I look up and I was in the hall of fame And now when I talk to my kids, I'm saying the same thing and my daddy told me yeah, and so the formula You don't change at the pal. I hit coaches talking to the pal teams. That's the same thing. They sent to the pro teams You know saying yeah, so it's just the same concept is just like you you know you get tired when you want to separate yourself The margin of it is so small. It's really not what you you know what God's blessed all of us to do is the concept of who or what And to take and discipline themselves to a level which is You know unbearable. Yeah, that would be the difference in the streaming world and the podcast world and in a fail In the camera crew world. Yeah, you know, you know, you know, it really don't matter the formula to be successful And I only know that because I changed sports It was like I grew up thinking I'm gonna be in a NFL I didn't grow up thinking about playing football But I took a mindset of what made me successful in basketball because I was only 64 So I would have to I'll work you yeah, and I got to the NFL and I said I'm I work you. Yeah, and I look up and I was starting as a rookie Well, no kind I started as a rookie. I look at all pro year two. It's crazy. And I'm like dang. It's crazy I like I do is just work harder You know saying and I look up and I was in the whole fame and all I really think my distinguished and qualities was the fact that I was willing to work When when times got tough I was willing to work when everybody wanted to go buy and spend their money I was willing to work when everybody said man, we got it I was just willing to work and I look up and I was at the top of the totem pole all time leader and touchdowns in the history of the game And it wasn't by coincidence to me because I knew I had worked It was what was underneath the surface is what nobody can see So I'm pretty proud of that man Everyday very motivated me It's all water under the bridge now, but you list your accolades all time touchdown leader for tight ends 2000s all decade member. I think your resume speaks for itself among all football fans myself included You weren't a first ballot Hall of Famer like many expected you to be to that sting It did it did I didn't I didn't know it was going to hurt as bad as it did But I guess when you get so close to anything You know when you at the door because I mean I made it to the finals So when you get that close I guess it felt like a failure Hmm it felt like I felt it felt like I lost and anytime you do that you really regroup You know what I'm saying and I exactly what I did the following year I knew the same format was coming up and I couldn't you know it was out of my control And so what I did is I became a better person. I said just keep being the best father You're gonna be keep being the best ambassador for the charges. Come to you. That's out of your control And it goes back to the formula again I never stop growing essentially. I was just like man look whatever whatever happened your two is going to happen And finally it happened and I wouldn't change it for nothing in the world The charges playing the Lions my hometown I mean so God had struck you to where I was The last one to come on stage. I was essentially the headliner So it made sense for me year two more so didn't it would have made me year one And like I said I wouldn't change it once you get in man you is water under bridge You ain't thinking about that exactly happy to be yeah Yeah once you're in you're in Did you look to anyone for advice during that time like Lidian Tomlinson or No, you know I normally go back to what I know to be true Is which is what I would say to most people. I just I just stayed being Antonio Gates. Yeah, you know saying I just stayed being myself I knew what I meant to the organization. I knew what I meant to the game football from the standpoint of essentially part of changing the position I didn't want Board Board members to make me feel any less of a person if that makes sense right so I didn't you know Yes, I was disappointed Essentially, but I just you know, I mean I'm just thinking like and what will when you can be the all time leader Some of you don't get me. We put asterisk on stuff But in reality scoring points was always from what I know to be considered a tier one kind of player And so I just let myself you know, I slept on it for a couple of days and I just turned around and I just started being the best version of me again Yeah God's timing. Yes, when you look around the NFL today who are the best tight ends? Who give me your top three Man, I gotta be careful because I got to know a lot of the boys You know y'all got some good questions, man You know, I'm gonna begin some Texas national without Lee when what they see oh Oh, man, I think right now I want to say as a complete tight end and I'm putting the ash you're going it because I want to make it the best with you know kiddos is probably I believe the most important piece To his team any other tight end You know obviously Travis has you know, he's the whole of the family in my opinion too And so he's a big part of what they do in Kansas City But obviously I understand the dynamic of getting older yeah, so but I would still say he has more of an impact still on a game plan Didn't any other tight end and I'm saying that to try to compare it to I think kiddos is the most important piece But I think Travis is probably the most impactful in terms of once you see Kansas City you gotta stop Travis Yeah, you gotta you don't get a plan to maintain him. I think the most talented one is I mean the boy from the and I hate to say this because I'm a charger The kid from the radius super talented. You know, I'm saying so I you know, I mean it's so many layers and I'm saying it to make sure I'm covering my friendships too I think he has the biggest upside. Yeah, so what he did as a rookie He's still growing right, but I still think kiddos have the biggest impact on his team because of what he's capable of doing in a run game So when you take him out it's things that you gotta do and plays we gotta call Specifically because he's not in the game no more And so I would say kiddos and I would say Travis still I did I like the way that got played last night for the Ravens Andrew although you take a lot of slack. Yeah, I like him a lot. I mean, I like a lot of him. I like the porter from the Lions. I like Um, I mean, I like a lot of guys. You know, I like Ingram from Jacksonville. I like Kyle Pits from the Falcons I mean, so those are the most talented ones in my opinion Kyle Pits is probably the most talented one Yeah, he can do so much. What does he need to get him over the heart? Right, that's what I'm saying. So whether or not he plays at a certain level is one thing Yeah, super super talented and I had to chat talk to him when he was at Florida. So He had the same coach that I had Tim Brewster. So he I understand the dynamic of what Tim Brewster has taught him But he I don't know what they're doing in a lot. I don't know if they're using him properly I don't know if he's in the right system So it's a multitude of do is but I would say kiddos if I had to pick one right today I would say kiddos will be first and I still put Travis in the mix because they're a smack factor. Yeah, and um You know between Kyle and you know rate I hate seeing the Raiders So I don't even want to pull it easy good. He's a good guy. You hate the chief too, right?
