Owen Thiele interviews actress Camila Mendes about her acting career, production company, and upcoming projects including the A24 film 'Peaked' and Marvel's 'Masters of the Universe.' They discuss her seven-year run on Riverdale, transition to indie filmmaking, and balancing acting with producing responsibilities.
Insights
- Stepping back from day-to-day operations reveals organizational efficiency—Mendes discovered her production company ran smoothly without her constant involvement after hiring experienced team members
- Instagram became a critical career tool for actors emerging during the platform's early adoption phase, enabling direct audience connection and creative control over personal brand
- Indie filmmaking offers creative freedom and collaborative environments that major studio productions cannot match due to budget constraints and approval hierarchies
- Seven-year television commitments create stability but require significant personal sacrifice, with actors missing major life events during 10-month annual filming schedules
- Production company leadership requires distinct skill set from acting—identifying and delegating to capable team members is more valuable than hands-on involvement

We have Camila and fucking Mendez on the podcast, yes! Woo! Come on! Camila Mendez is here. I wasn't gonna keep this clip in, but I kept it in because it felt right for... Wait, because it's nine, because it's 2000? Because it just, it feels like this logo to me. Wait, that's so nice. This is so cute. Thank you. You look really cute. Thanks. By the way, what you're giving is 2000s. That's what I'm trying to give. You are, you are. You're doing it perfectly. Which I normally don't do in my did it, I don't normally dress like this in my did it. Okay, let's do a PSA. I don't dress like cutesy, but... I kind of think it's iconic. But it's fun for this. No, you have to method dress. Yeah, I love method dressing. You do? I feel like you're really good at it. We'll see. I feel like, well, Master's of the Universe. We'll see. The press door, we'll see, if I... You're kind of going on an insane press door. I just dress like a warrior every day. Good. Iconic, iconic. Your hair is so cute, I can't get over it. Oh my God, thank you. When did it happen? Two days ago. I have to do it for an upcoming project, but I was like, I'm gonna do it early. So if I hate it, I can be like, hey, why don't we not do that? Is this the project you just announced? Yeah, it is actually. What is that? It's called Tommy Karate. Yeah. You know what, you know something about you. You're always fucking working. That's not true. You are always working. But this year it feels like I am. You are always working and as it should be. Yeah. There are very few people where I see a deadline article and I'm like, thank God it's her. Literally with you, I'm like, thank God it's fucking Kimmy. I'm serious. Because if it were somebody else. It wouldn't be as good. It wouldn't be as good and you're nice. And you're nice. And you're fun to work with. Yeah, I feel like I need to chill though, maybe. Why? Because you're working too much? And we're just too much. I'm just too busy. You also run a production company. Yeah, but it's nice because this year we have a new hire. We have two new hires. Meredith Dittlow, who used to be VP at Hello Sunshine. And Natalie Gerber, who's the best and used to work at Tricky Knot, our investment partner. Of course. And so like we've got a great team. Team and Rachel. Between my assistant and Rachel running the company with Meredith and that. It's like because of the projects I've had this year, I've been able to like not be as hands-on. Totally. And it's running very smoothly. Interesting how when you step away, you realize you're the problem. With this podcast, I was shooting adults and I was gone for three months. And I was like, literally I would be like, everything's good over there? And everyone was like, it's going perfectly. I'm like, I should leave more often. Wait, what A24 project are you shooting? Peaked. Peaked with? Give me the long line. It's Molly Gordon directing. Amazing. Oh, that one. Oh my God, that looks so good. And it's the cast of my dreams. I can't believe I'm a part of it. It's insane. I can. No, no, no, I actually can't. I can. No, I'm on set and everyone's like, I'm the weak leg. But it's great. No, you're not. We have Molly Gordon. We have Emma Mackie. Oh, yes. We have Connor Story. Yeah. We have Mithra Duhari. We, it's just a dream. It's a dream cast. By the way, quick thing about Connor Story. I still haven't seen Hidden Rivalry, but I know, I know, I know. It's like, I'm getting bullied for it every day. It's tough out there in the group chat. Why have you seen it? Because I just don't watch anything lately. Also, you're working so much that it's like hard to turn something else. I get it. Yeah, and when I do watch something, it's SpongeBob. Like I'm like going to sleep. My fiance and I go to sleep to SpongeBob every night. And it's, we look forward to it more than anything. But wait, let me give you a little bit about Connor. Is that at the glad awards? Cause I think he got there like a bit after it started. I don't remember. All I remember is there was like a swarm of people around a table and I was like, who is that? Like I thought it was like Elton John or something. And it was Connor Story. He's the Beatles. He is. No, it's crazy. Like the level of stardom. And how quickly it rose. One, how quickly? Well, Riverdale. No, but Riverdale was gradual. Really? Yeah. Cause we went out and we were on the CW first. Not in my house. That shit was on and we were obsessed. My mom was like, oh God, I love this. I love Veronica. I was like, it's amazing. She was that Anthony Mackie. Well, of course. Of course. Literally. Yeah, it is very fast, but also he is so talented and he is the talent to back it up. I mean, I can't speak to that yet cause I haven't seen it, but I can tell. He's a star. Sometimes you meet a star. I'm sitting with one. Sometimes you meet a star and it's crazy what they can do. It's crazy how they, I'm not kidding. It's like, it's really crazy. Yeah, it is crazy. It's crazy. It's impressive. Wait, I need to just know something really fast. When did you rap Masters of the Universe? June of last year. And it comes out June of this year. June of this year. A whole year has passed. A year has passed. I remember, I forget, cause we were somewhere, where were we? We were at South, no, we were at South by. And you were either- Oh, I was in the middle of shooting. You were in the middle of shooting. You came from shooting to South by. I know. I look at pictures of myself then and I'm like, whoa. Why? Cause I looked, I just feel like I looked so swole. Well, you were like working out like insanely. Yeah, but at the time I felt like I wasn't swole enough. Like I was like, annoyed at how- Marvel. Yeah, I was like, I need to get bigger. And I don't look big enough. I don't look strong enough. You looked amazing. But then when I look back, not that I was like that yoked, but like when I look back and I see what I look like now, I'm like, oh, okay, it did make a difference. Totally, totally. What were you doing to prepare for that? A lot of training, like months of training. Do they put you through training or is that a personal thing? No, they put us through training. Yeah. That's that like we had to go to London months in advance just to do that. You and Nicholas? Me and Nicholas. I mean, he had like a real transformation, but I just needed to look like I could, you know, fight a bitch. What you, you look like, you look like, I would, I think it's mostly, can I be honest? Yeah, be honest. I'm looking at the face. Like, like when I watch a Marvel movie, I'm like, I want the, Expression. The grit. I want the grit. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's true. I don't care about the, do you know what I'm saying? Hunter Schaefer, I'm like, like, I'm looking at the face. I put pressure on myself because I get mad when I watch superhero movies and I'm like, yeah, right. Like you could throw a punch like that. Like I just like get angry at it. Totally, totally, totally. I get it. You know, they hire the skinniest bitches. Totally. And they're like, mm. Totally. Me. Me. And they're like, but they look hot. Literally me. Oh no. Yeah. Wait. Okay. That's great. So I, How do you sit on this podcast? You just don't. What's the angle? Like, is it flattering? Your angles. Am I, This is a wide angle. What's the hottest angle? Wait, that's hot. I mean, here's the deal. You're always going to look hot. Do you know what I'm saying? You're always going to look good. All right. Begin. Start over. Yeah, start over. You go start over. Wait, wait, wait. So we were in a film together. Let's discuss the film. Okay. How did you, How did, How did this come about? So you were sent to script. Idiotka? Yeah. Yeah. I literally, One of the producers ex-boyfriends who I went to a neighboring high school with. Okay, just go. Sorry. He went to neighboring high school. Yeah. And he DM'd me one day. And he was just like, I know this amazing writer director who has a great script and you should read it and meet with her. And this was like right when Rachel and I were starting our production company. And so I was in Vancouver filming Riverdale, but Rachel went and met with her. Oh my God, it was that long ago? It was a while ago. Yeah. Was that four years ago? Three years ago? Three years ago. Wait, was it? Yeah. No, no, no. Three years ago. It was like three years ago maybe. It was the last season of Riverdale. Wasn't that three years ago? But it was like right before we wrapped forever. I'm gonna say it. So like a few months before that. Emotional. And we both read it and like within three pages, we were like, we need to do this. This is the perfect script for us to do as our first production. And Nostasia has such a brilliant mind. She's such a sharp point of view. Very distinct point of view, which I think is really rare for first time filmmakers. I agree. And I think now it's like, that is all people want is like original points of view. Totally. And like unique storytelling. Yeah, definitely. I was so lucky to be a part of because I feel like it was such a, when I read the script, I was like, these are two worlds that you rarely see. Yeah. Like the fashion world. Fashion, especially from the LA lens. Totally. Instead of the New York lens. Totally. Which is a very different world. Very different. Very different. With the added element of reality TV. Yes. Which is very LA and really fun. Right, right. There's actually three worlds. There's reality TV, there's fashion, and then there's the immigrant family. And the struggle to, or the want to make it and break out. And what that actually means. And it's so interesting. It felt, watching it back, I didn't see that part. Cause I only did the, I was only a part of the reality show. Oh, that's true. So I didn't know, I knew I read the script. I just didn't know what it would feel like. And it's so interesting cause reading the script, it felt like two different tones. And I was like, wow, this is a feat to pull this off. And in a way it was. And that was the point. Right, right, right. It's like you go from this like really dysfunctional family dynamic to a whole different kind of dysfunction. Which is like, the glamorous, but also not very glamorous life of reality TV. And yeah, yeah. And the toxicity that comes with that. And people that are just like disconnected from reality a little bit. Totally, totally. But also her family disconnected from reality. It's kind of this, they're the same, but different. It's gorgeous. And then Anna obviously just wove this whole movie together. So brilliantly. There's no girls that could have played that role. I mean, it was brilliant. There was no one else. Her performance. And then you were very, I was very lucky because the cast when I joined, I was like, I want to be a part of this. I love it. I'm so happy you said yes. Like that was a miracle. By the way, we thought like you were, hey, what's going on? A miracle? We knew that you needed to be in it. I think my parents saw it and sobbed. It's so interesting what some movies do to different genres. Like I watched it and my takeaway was, wow, it's so funny. Like it's beautiful, but it's so funny. Yeah, it is super funny. And my parents takeaway was, that is so sad. Like it's just, no, but it's like, that was beautiful. Like it's their take on, cause they're like, they relate so much to this immigrant family. And I was very lucky growing up in LA that I relate more to the humor of the LA. You know what I'm saying? Do you have immigrant parents? Not at all. I couldn't have less of immigrant parents. But they related to that part. They really related to it. No, no, my parents are from New York. That's an immigrant. I'm sorry. But no, but my dad was watching it. And with this time, I mean, we're living in the craziest political era of our generation. And I think he was more like, this is so touching and important and sad. And he just, it's not that he related in his own life. He more was like feeling for- It is a very universal story, I think. Totally, it's beautiful. That's what I loved the most about it. Cause you know, I'm, come from a Brazilian family, but like, I feel like, what do they say? Like Russians are the winter Latinas. I haven't heard that, but that is hilarious. And I'm like, that makes so much sense to me. That is hilarious. And yeah, I feel like there's this beautiful immigrant story, but also there's a universal undertone to it. Totally. And I think anybody with a dysfunctional family can relate to this. Anyone who hasn't seen it has to go watch it. You can watch it on where? Well, now it's on Apple TV. Apple TV, babes. And hopefully streaming soon. Come on, and we gotta get streaming soon, dude. Apple TV, go watch it. It's amazing. You are so funny. Owen is so funny. No, I'm not. You are so funny. To do a scene with Cammy Mendez, I was like, I have chills. What was your favorite line? I think we did this part where there was a bug. And I was like, ew, a disgusting bug. And I hit it with like, I think that's so, I remember reading that line and I was like, was that written for me? I was like, that's so me. I can't deal with bugs, can you? I love when you go, I forget what you say leading up to, but you go like serving your community. At twoy, we give you more. More outfit choices with 20 kilograms of luggage allowance as standard. More hotels built around what you love, like that swim up suite. More, race you to the bottom, water parks on site. More, ooh, that looks good. Food options from poolside snacks to ala cart dining. Book on app, in store or online. You book it, twoy sort it. At all and after protected, keys and C's apply, selected hotels only, see website for details. That was so fun to play. It's so fun to play. Are you an art, do you like improving on set? Did Riverdale call for it? No, Riverdale did not call for it. And I remember the first time I was in a project that did call for it, I felt like a fish out of water. Like I did not know how to go off script because it's scary and like, especially when you like basically grow up on a show where like you cannot say one word wrong, like it's... So it was to script? It was to script to the, like it was very strict to script. So like I've just gotten so used to memorizing things. It's the Bible. Like I have to say it exactly as it's written. And then when I was improving, I'm just like, am I allowed? Even projects that don't necessarily ask for improv, like most indie films or most projects, like they're fine if you kind of go a little bit off. Totally. And they like welcome it. And that's just been like a whole new world. And now I love it. Now it's like... Now it's your pride and joy. Yeah, and now I like, I also like to like kind of slightly rewrite things in advance just to make it sound as like organic to me as possible. Totally or the character that you're diving into. I love improving. I would improv all day. I will say on these shows that I've been on, everyone welcomes it so much. But I feel like I will eventually get a project where people are like, I wrote that, stick with it. Do you know what I mean? Steve haven't had that yet? I haven't had that. Not even on peaked? Opposite. Peaked is like Molly's like, what was the line written? She was like, I don't care about that. She was like, wait, oh, it's supposed to take place outside. Molly's like, you know what? Let's do it in the bathroom. You have a better instinct on this. Like she's so collaborative. Collaborative, yeah. It's a dream. That's the way to do it. But that's also... I don't wanna say that. It's just hard to do that at a high level. It's hard to do that at like a big budget. You can't do that with masters, for example. Like, I mean, by the way, we did improv a bunch. So, but I'm saying like, oh, you can only change so much. Totally. It's like, no, no, no. Well, it's like you need to do a kick. A million layers of people approve this. Exactly. And also like there's not, like you need to do a kick. There's like, it's like stunts. Yeah, yeah. It's like literally like, you need to go into a fight scene. It's like, you can't, like me on Master of the Universe would be like literally like, let's, can we just do a five minute scene before I kick? So they're like, no, cut. No, but it is what I was gonna say, and I was nervous about getting canceled, but I don't think I will. I think... Get canceled. I think our age group grew up with the Kristen Wigs, that these great really deeply funny women and who broke on camera and who like had fun making brides. I don't know. So there's, I feel like Molly, for instance, as a young director who idolizes these women are like, I want it to be fun on set because that translates to fun on screen. 1000%. And I feel like we prioritize that. Yeah. And I feel like... Especially when you're hiring people like you who have so much to give, like who have so much comedy to bring to the table naturally that it's like by trying to put a lid on that, you're just like... Dimming it. Stifling, yeah, exactly. Me saying dimming it about something you just said about me. You're dimming my light. You're dimming my light. No, I agree. I just... Anyways, all to say, it was so great to work with you because you as a producer were doing so many things on set. It was crazy watching. I actually was like, I don't know if I could do that. Really? Because yeah, because... I mean, there was script changes. There was this, there was that, there was locations, there was outfits. There was then you on set actually having to say lines. And then there was like you talking about, talking about the scene with me. And then Nost would come over and talk about the scene with us. And then as a producer, you would think through other... Like it was just a hundred things. So then to actually see her performance, I'm like, holy shit, and she was juggling a hundred. It's really crazy. I feel like the hard part for me was the producing part. And the acting part for this project, one, because I'm also not like the lead lead of it, but also because the role felt like not an extension of me. I'm not like a manipulator psychotic woman, not that Nicole is psychotic, but you know, I just... Yeah, I get it. But I think like I'm a producer playing a producer. Totally. Like I would just take my headset and like I would take it off from here and put it down here. Totally, for good. To get into this character. To Nicole's character. Yeah, you would be, you would literally be listening to me off set like this on your contact. And then you would be like, oh, feedback. I have to go back into the scene. But you know, it felt really easy to step into that. And the role didn't ask much of me in terms of like emotional range. It felt like very grounded and accessible. So the real challenge for me during that project was producing it. And that was the second one we ended up producing. Because although this was supposed to be the first Griffin and Summer. Great. Griffin and Summer ended up going first. So we did that first and then Idiotka and both were during the strike. And I think that's another reason why I was even able to be so hands on because nothing else was happening in the industry. So it was like, what better time for Griffin and Summer to go shoot in Virginia? Do you like Virginia? I was born in Virginia. Isn't that crazy? Who knew that? No one. That's it in your dreams exclusive. It's probably on the internet. I was randomly born in Charlottesville, but I lived there for like a year. So I don't really identify with it at all. But it's a nice fun fact. Where did you grow up? All over. I moved around a lot as a kid. Why? My dad's work. No, he's not in the military. I was about to say. He just was like kind of climbing the corporate ladder and like kept getting transferred and moved around. Was it hard? I mean, yeah, I hated it as a kid. Now I feel like it primed me for this business in a really beautiful way. But I will say for somebody who like, and this makes sense, for somebody who grew up with a lot of change, I crave routine more than anything. Like I actually like hate the part of my industry that I invented. I hate the part of our industry that requires like constant change. It's not my comfort zone at all. Yeah, I get that. I love stability. So do I. I love being in my home, like in my routine. Like it's, that is all I care about in life. And then I'm like, why did I choose a career? That requires me to go everywhere but where I live. So Riverdale was probably amazing for you because it was very, very much routine. How many years? Seven. Seven years. I was so grateful for that. For that to be my introduction to this business, I think was really nice. Can I ask you a question? Did you like Riverdale? I loved it. It had its challenges for sure. But I think that came more so with like being, see this is where now I'm gonna sound completely hypocritical, being away from home. Yeah, but that's different. You're talking about something different because you were with the people, you were home. You, it was, you were built, I mean, the first, how do I explain this? No, but listen, cause like that was my home away from home. It was my work home, but that wasn't like my whole life. You know, it was like, that was a bubble where it was just us, the Riverdale cast and like we ate, slept and breathed work. And each other. And that work environment and each other, which I think is a lot over that much time. So being away from like all my other friends and my family for that long, seven months out of the year, sorry, 10 months out of the year. What? 10 months out of the year, we were filming each season. What? Wait, wait, what? Yeah. What's going on? Because it was like old fashioned network television. So we did 22 episode seasons. And so it was a lot of time to be away from your life. But it- Wasn't there one season with less episodes? The first 13. Great. Everything after that was 22. Jesus Christ. You got picked up. And then obviously like during our hiatus, we'd all want to go do other things. So then we'd work during hiatus. During your two month hiatus? Yes. So then you'd go like quickly squeeze in a movie and then go back and shoot Riverdale. So for seven years, I was like, I'd feel really stable when I was like in Vancouver filming, but I did miss my life a lot. Totally. And I missed out on a lot of weddings and a lot of important family moments. Like you miss out on a lot, but I mean, that's the trade. I can't complain. I got a job out of college as an actor. Like that's literally everything I ever dreamed of. How did that happen? You auditioned? You auditioned for this? How did that happen? You auditioned? You were after only as an unknown? How did this happen? You're just so pretty that I've been it. How did it happen? I got an agent, because I interned at a talent agency. Where'd you go to college? NYU. We went to the same school, babe. I know, but I dropped out after two weeks. Wait, really? Yeah, you know this. I know, that's what I would have known you. We would have been friends. I thought you like, I didn't know it was two weeks. I thought it was like two years. Wow, you can last, huh? My love, I go in, I go in and I go out. I pop in and I go, imagine me in sex. Let this actually drop. Imagine me in sex. It's five, it's three minutes. I go as short as we can make it. I go pop in, pop out. You're like, that's enough about it. Literally, I go, and loving you. Tesco, we know that beans... ...main's hines. And you love to ask... Have you had yours? All of you. Love it. Hater. And because... I'm worth it. When you need low prices on brands you love, like 150 grams of Heinz beans, 12 pack of Wheat Bix, 250 grams of Marmite, or 700 millilitres of L'Oreal LV of Color Protect Shampoo, look out the Everyday Low Prices logo in store and online. Tesco, every little helps. Everyday Low Prices includes thousands of products across the majority of larger stores and online prices held until the 10th of May. Selected branded products only. OK, NYU, you've been an agent. I got... I interned at a talent agency. And at the end of it, I just asked if they would sign me and they did. After I auditioned for them, of course. And then... It's genius. Yeah, well, I... That is genius. I told them I was interested in the other side of the business, but I wasn't. That's brilliant. And they were like a really small boutique talent agency. So, you know, there's like a four-person office. So it wasn't that intimidating, because like at that point, we were all homies. Right. And then I auditioned for like a year and Riverdale was my first bite. It's a huge bite. Yeah. So, and then you... OK, and then you get this massive show. Can I ask you a question that is... You're not... You can... We can cut. Yeah. Do you... Did you... How did it feel for fans to first come up to you to recognize you? Why would we cut that? I don't know. I'm always weird. I feel weird about... You're so humble and grounded that... I feel weird about talking with... About fame to you. About fame. Because you're so... Like, I can't explain it. You're really like really normal. I know. But you're really famous. I... Yeah. I wish I was... I wish I wore fame more famously. Do you know what I mean? I just like... I feel like I... I wish I was like... Mysterious. Totally, totally. You know what I mean? Like... But you were like earnest. I wish I was like not normal. Yes. If that makes sense. Like... Like I love... Because I love that in like actors. Like I love when like they're like odd balls and you're like, who are you? Like that's so fascinating. Totally. Everyone who gave it Oscar speech this year, I was like... Who the hell is that? Do you know what I mean? They always said things that you're like... They're like, and I just want... And I think... I want to thank the peanut butter that made me. And you're like, what are you talking about? You crazy goose. You just wearing Hamnet. Do you know what I mean? I'm like, tell me more. I completely get it. You're really earnest. You're very grateful and really earnest. I think so. No, you are. It's amazing. And I feel like I'm very... I'm like talking about myself and that is making me uncomfortable to say. But like, I feel like I'm... Accessible to people. You are completely. You're a friend. And I don't... I mean, I think I like that. No, I think I like that. I mean, it's also... This is so uncomfortable for me. Sorry. It's also... I just need to say one thing and then we'll move on. It's also the perks and the trade of being on a show like Riverdale where everyone wanted to be your friends. It's... We all saw ourselves in you... Do you get what I'm saying? Yeah. Yeah. It was a friend's show. Yeah. So you're... But it was also like... What I think is so fascinating about Riverdale is that the show was coming up just as like being a celebrity on Instagram was coming up. Like that was very new. Like people weren't really on Instagram like that as actors. Totally. And we were sort of... I remember like... Like, CAA would say this to me. Like our agencies would say this to us. We were kind of like the pioneers of this movement. Totally. Of like actors utilizing Instagram. And their platforms. Yeah. It was like... I wouldn't say we were the pioneers, but we were definitely part of the beginning. We pioneered Instagram. We were the pioneers of Instagram. No, totally. I totally get it. But we were part of that like era where that was just starting to be a thing. Well, I remember all of us following you. We all followed our friends on Instagram. Right. Exactly. We didn't follow celebrities. Yes. And then I remember all of us, all of my friends being like, follow, follow, follow to all the Riverdale cast, KJAP, follow. And I was like, oh my God, this is... Yeah, it is. It is that. And it was like the Wild West. It was like unknown territory. You couldn't compare yourself to any of your idols because they never had to do... I couldn't be like, what did Meryl Streep do? Totally. What was her caption? Totally. What was her bio? Totally. It was just like... Would she story this or grid it? Yeah. It's like, absolutely not. Of course. Of course, it was all new. It was all new. And I remember when I actually deleted my Instagram when the show came out or like right before or something. Why? Because I was like, I don't want to be on Instagram. I don't want people to know who I am. I just want to be known for the characters that I play. And then my team was like, you should really can reconsider that. You're going to lose a lot of money. And then I was like, oh, okay. Yeah, totally. I'll get Instagram. That's great. And I'm very glad I did because it's... Also connected you to somebody. Yeah. And I think that there's actually a lot of power in it. Like you get to express yourself and control your image instead of leaving it to the media to decide. Totally. So I think there's like actors have a lot of power now. And you can also like leverage those numbers when it comes to promoting stuff, especially pro... I don't know. I just think it's like, it's a tool. Also as a producer. Yes. It's so amazing to have those numbers. Yeah. To then be like, I kind of know what works. Yeah. Trust me. This young girl. Yes, I'm young and a woman in this industry. And guess what? You should fucking trust me. Yeah. And I get to look at my statistics and see how many of my... Or my analytics and see how many of my fans are like in Brazil or Mexico or... It's so beautiful. You get to like really understand your audience. Totally. And I think there's a lot of like power in that. There is. There is. But wait, we were talking about something else. Wait, wait. I was asking him what the first fan interaction was, but you... Right. We went way off. Oh, we went deep. We went deep. We went absolutely deep. My first fan interaction, I think honestly it was the day after it came out in Vancouver. So fast. But it was wild because we came out on... Or maybe it was... Yeah, no. I'm trying to remember. It was either the day we came out on Netflix or the day... No, no, no. It was definitely the day we came out on the CW. And I went to a bar the next day with like the cast and someone came up to us. They just seen like the first episode. That would have been me. And I was like, that was fast. Like it's been a day. Jesus Christ. Like you were on it. I love your friendship with Lily and the Mads. I was just with them. I love them. I went to go see Forbidden Fruits. Lily had a screening. We have to. And oh my God, I loved it so much. I have to go see it. She's so good at it. Emma's in it. She plays like a pickle. I know pickle. It's so cute. She's so good in it. No, it was like, it was really special. It's so cute watching Emma who doesn't watch or know any film or TV shows other than Napoleon Dynamite. Okay. This tracks. I'm literally not kidding. She knows Napoleon Dynamite and Coraline. Those are her two movies that she knows. By the way, great movies. Yeah, great. Great fucking movies. So she only knows those two. And maybe like she saw a quiet place in theaters like with a boyfriend. That's not, I forget, but like she only knows like three things. So her describing this movie to me when she was filming it, she was like, I was like, what is it? She was like, oh my God, you're going to love it. It's not like Napoleon Dynamite and it's really not like Coraline either. She's like, how do I describe it? She would have to watch more film, but it was so excited. She was so excited about it. That's so cool. Now to see that it's like actually in the, it's just amazing. By the way, I saw that she dropped her West Elm. It's amazing. Have you seen it? And I just went into a new house and I'm. You just moved? Yeah. With Rudy? Yeah. Are you guys married? But we were already living together. Yeah, but. But I was living in his house. Yeah, but now you guys live together. And now we have. Together, like you have it together. Yes. To live in a space that's yours. Yes. I was like, I was like, it's time for it to be our space. Are you, are you, are you, you're still so young. Yeah. But do you want kids? Oh hell yeah. How many? I too. I don't know why I just backed up. I was so excited. You were so. How many? Put off by the fact that I. I want you to have kids. You'd be an amazing mom. I can't wait to be a mom. I'm like so excited. I'm, I'm. Do you think you're gonna have nepo babies? I mean, I guess. Isn't that, I mean, isn't that what it, I don't know if I'm famous enough to have a nepo baby though. Cut. But I think, I think the internet would disagree. These days they're calling anyone a nepo baby. They're like, your dad was a grip. Nepo. I'm a nepo baby. Really? I'm not really because I don't think my dad's successful enough in the field to be. He's wonderful. Filled. He produced, not wrote, produced, produced. Do you know what that means? Produced. Yes. Produced the theme song to the office. Which is an iconic. And by the way, he's an amazing musician. He's worked with Ray Charles and, and, and, and. That's actually to. Two, two are the same. But, but you get. But I just mean like he's done everything. He worked with Disney, he worked with all like he's amazing, but I just don't know if he, if that makes me a nepo baby, but maybe it does. Well, did his access to resources. Help you? No, but I helped myself. I went to Crossroads school in, in Santa Monica and I was friends with all of the kids who had famous parents. And it's not even that they, I wasn't friends with them because of that, but then they went on to go make web series. Pazzie made a web series and she kindly cast me in it. And then it got views because her dad was Larry, but also because she was writing a great. Fuck it. So I don't know. I'm a nepo friend. Yeah. Nepo adjacent. I'm nepo adjacent. Yeah. You're not a nepo baby at all. No. You're fucking, you're amazing. You fucking climbed that ladder. My parents are not in show business at all. Are they confused by it? I don't know. Kind of. They still have no idea what producing means. Totally. I have to explain that to them at least like twice a year. They're like, so you funded the movie and I'm like, no. No, right, right, right, right, right. Right. So what do you do? And I'm like, and then when I described it and they're like, so you directed it. And I'm like, no. I just helped the director and put the pieces together. And yeah. You put the pieces together. Yeah. Well, yeah. Right. So I mean, it's just like producing can mean so many things. Like, especially now there's no old fashioned system anymore. 100%. It's just like there's a million ways to produce something. Also, a lot of producers just left their name on to it. Oh, yes. Which is something that you, which I'm going to be honest, someone of your stature. I was like, oh, when, when Cammy Mendes was producing this, I was like, okay. So she's slapping her name on, on, on idiotica. No, not at all. Not at all. No. It was in the weeds, my love. Yeah. I, I have an issue with that. Totally. I get that because you actually produce. Yeah. Well, I just like, I don't want it to, because I also don't want my name on something as a producer. If you're involved. If I can't be involved and like, give my two cents and have creative input. Like I, I would get scared of that. Yes. Totally. Um, but I, you know, I get like EPs. I get like actors come on as EPs to something because they like, you know, help shape the character and are involved in different ways. I think that's. Oh, that looks good. Food options from poolside snacks to ala cart dining. Book on app, in store or online. You book it, to resort it. At all and after protected, keys and C's apply selected hotels only see website for details. At Tesco, we know that beans. Main's hides. And you love to ask. Have you had yours? All of you. Love it. Hater. And because. I'm worth it. When you need low prices on brands you love, like 150 grams of Heinz beans, 12 pack of wheat, Bix 250 grams of Marmite or 700 milliliters of L'Oreal LV of color, protect shampoo, look out the everyday low prices logo in store and online Tesco. Every little helps. Every day, low prices includes thousands of products across the majority of larger stores and online prices held until the 10th of May selected branded products only valid. Do you eventually want to switch from acting just into producing? Are you going to direct? No, no, no. I know my place. I'm not a director. I don't love it enough. I like, I don't think I could ever dedicate two years of my life to one project because that's what it is. Totally. And that's like not even counting the development of it. Like you have to love something so much that you would just be doing that for two years. Yeah. And nothing else. Totally. And like hope that it's good and hope that I don't know, it's just like, I don't think I could ever do that. I agree. And I think I don't think I'm like a visionary enough. Like I think you need to be, I only respect directors that have like, A real clear vision. Yeah. Like something to say, a really clear vision. And I think I'm really, I think I'm good at helping people arrive at that vision rather than being the one. Actually visioning. Visioning. Yeah. I would use the word visioning. Visioning. Cammy, are you, are you sorry to jump, but I'm just jumping. Are you chronically online? A little bit. What's your current hyper fixation? What are you obsessed with right now? That really creepy puppet. What is that? Do you know what I'm talking about? Wait, what is that? What is that? That creepy puppet. What is it? I like forget the song that's behind it. But it's like a really intense like rock song and this puppet being like, Wait, you're on. Can I show it to you? Yes. Can you hand me my purse? You are on a side of Tik Tok or. No, I think it's like, I think it's like. Are you on Reels or Tik Tok? Tik Tok. Thank God. What am I 40? No, literally I'm over the Reels. I make fun of Rudy because he only watches Reels. While you're looking this up, I just need to know, what did you think of the time jumps in Riverdale? I honestly am like, finally, like let's like as in go back in time to the 50s. Oh, I was like, so happy we did that. I call it because why the fuck not? We left no stone unturned. Did not feel that way. Wait, really? She, I think she said, that's the one you should skip. The last season? Yeah. No. Yeah. She says that's the one you should skip. That's Rudy's favorite season. Really? Yeah. I'm going to be honest. I watched six. I, it is the one I skipped, but I didn't mean to skip it. You watched six, it's seven seasons, isn't it? Yeah. So you just didn't finish it. I just didn't finish it. You're like, it's the one I skipped. You didn't, you never got there. You didn't skip to anywhere. No, you're right. I just, well, I skipped now and I'm here with you. You skipped. I skipped and I'm now here with you. Do another show. Literally. I need to go back and watch it. I don't know that you need to go back and watch it. But I need to. I think there are other seasons I would tell you to skip. Really? Like what? I'm like trying to remember, wait, season six, the one you watched. Oh, great. The one I actively watched. I would tell you to skip season six. Why? I think that's the season we all became superheroes. And it got a little weird. I'm obsessed with it. Like at one point my character was like my superhero, like each episode, like someone discovered they had like a secret power. There was like something going on in Riverdale and everyone was like getting powers. And my power was that I was toxic by kiss. Like if you kissed me, you would die. Wait, I don't remember this. Then maybe you, maybe you. I don't remember this at all. Maybe you skipped it. You would kiss you and you would die? Yeah. Do you remember me performing toxic by Britney Spears? Yes. Okay, then you watched it. That was the episode. That's the only part you, you've retained. I don't remember the kiss. You're like, I don't know why she's dancing in toxic, but I love it. I have no idea. Yeah. And then, and then my character started like emitting a green goo. Oh, I remember that. Yeah. Oh, that was a really weird season. I forgot that. I forgot that at that point I forgot what Riverdale was. I know why Madeline doesn't like that season. Why? Because Herberto made her our showrunner at the end. Wait, yeah, this was season six. Wait, was it season six or season five? No, it was season six. I don't remember. What did she do? I honestly don't know. She had like floated up and she had like lasers coming out of her eyes. Like she like flew and she, she was like, I don't know. Do you guys like just talk about this time in your life? Oh, yeah. And laugh? Oh my God, we would laugh all the time. It was, it's so funny. It was really funny to be on that show and a lot of fun, like a lot of fun. It's insane. Oh, sweet. No, I'm so, I'm so, so grateful for it because I feel like it was like the formative years of my life and. And we were all lucky to be a part of it. All the fans, all the fans absolutely. Like say what you want. It's like unforgettable. Like you can't. Totally. Like even when people talk shit about it, it's like they love to bring it up again and be like, that show is fucking crazy. Totally. And it was. And then like, and you're still talking about it, honey. Wait, show me the clown really fast. And then I'll ask you one more question and then we'll be done with this. Okay, wait. I feel like you asked me so many questions that I just straight up. What? Like forgot. Oh, here. No. What is this? Okay. When you're squeezing every pimple, poor on your face and your man keeps walking and asking what you're doing. By the way, me, what's your skin routine? Um, I mean, no, not that interesting. Like I wash it and I moisturize it. Sometimes I use like acid wipes, loops, loops to hydrate. You, I get facials now and then you have perfect skin looking at you is like looking in a mirror. Wait, I think right now that's not what I meant. That's not what I meant. I meant looking at glass. It's like, like we're one in the same. We are one in the same. I love, um, uh, I think it's good right now. It's really you got me on a good day. Really? Yeah. Do you break out? Um, yeah, sometimes like around my period. Yeah. Like right before that's how I know it's coming. How far? Cause I just start getting little, I'm sorry. That's a cystic pimples everywhere. But, um, yeah, like if I, if I didn't have good skin, I would have gotten glam done today. Cause I, I don't know how to like cover breakouts. You look perfect. Thank you. I, you, you can't take a compliment. It's so endearing. It's really uncomfortable. It's really endearing. But I also can. Here's the thing. What's on your mind? I feel like I'm a cancer. Okay. Keep going. Does that track? I don't know. I don't know what that means, but keep going. Then why'd you ask? I thought maybe you would say Libra. Oh, I don't know why. Cause I feel like Libras are like attention, attention. I'm a Libra rising attention, attention. No, not about me. Attention, attention. Couldn't be me. Couldn't be me. That's how you see me, Owen. No, I was just saying the compliment thing. Keep going. So you're a cancer and what you saw. No, I feel like I like, I actually feel like I can hold a compliment, but I'm like embarrassed or like ashamed to hold it. Does that make sense? Totally. It's like, am I making sense? Yeah. I'm thinking, I'm looking at you thinking of how perfect your skin is and just thinking. Like looking in a mirror. It's like looking in a mirror. Okay. Last question for you. Okay. I feel like I asked you absolutely nothing, but your answers have been so beautiful. You should do a TED talk. Really? You're really natural. I have nothing to say though. What the hell? You just suck so much about life. Okay. What is your big dream? The big dream? Your big dream. Give me the big dream. My big dream is, it's like really corny and like, but I really like just want to have my community live close to me. Like I want, my mom, I already just moved her closer to me. So that's check. I want Rudy's family to come closer. I want my dad's side of the family to come closer. And I want to just like raise a beautiful family and have like a little sanctuary. And I want to like have enough success in life where it's not overwhelming, but enough to live happily and comfortably and give my kids like the best life. And to have the privilege of doing work that really fulfills me. That's my dream. I want that clip and I want to go to bed to it every night. So usually I say my dream. I'm not going to give a dream after that. I'm just going to say that, that, that. Wait, what's your dream? That. I want that for me, but for me. Yes. Do you want kids by the way? I need kids. Have kids. Are we the same age? How old are you? I'm older than you. Do you know how old I am? No. I'm 31. Oh, never mind. I thought you were 27. No. Oh my God. I'm giving 27. Yeah, definitely. Oh my God. You look what you look even younger than that. I just assumed because you're like married and like you're talking about moving your family closer to you. So I'm like, she must be 27. You know what I mean? I, I, I guess 23. Okay. So you're still have time. How's the two years younger? You still have time, baby. It's still have time. No, you have like all the time. I have all the time. We both have all the time. Well, no. I mean, I guess these days women all. But freezing your eggs? I know, but I just like, I just kind of want to do it before that becomes necessary. I just want to like. You don't have to put this on if it'll ruin your skin. Are you scared? I'm going to dinner with Rachel after this. Oh dear God. Am I doing this right? Yes. Do you mind saying in your dreams? No. Only yours does? Well, you could wear this, but it's, it's, um. And you're like, I don't never watch it. No, it has makeup on it. So that's why I didn't give you this. Oh, okay. I just sleep with that one. That's what I usually get. Okay. That's okay. But do you say yours has to be empty today? Are you mad at me? No. Wait, I just have one more question. I don't care. Did you even ask any of these? I didn't ask any of this. What's the craziest you have me ever forgotten? I, I mean, no, I just can't say who it is, but like some. Um, musician sent me a video of like an opera singer. I don't know. It was like a really crazy weird video and then was like, go to this exact time code. And it, I like had no idea what I meant. I never answered it, but it was like a really weird video. Who is it? Off cam. I'm not telling you. Put the mic like this. Put the mic like this. I can't, I can't. What? Tell me. I'm not saying it on camera. What? Why was it an opera video? And it was, and it was like a really random, um, like way to slide into someone's DMs. Yeah. Yeah. And like that's no, and that's like the only, the only one that ever, um, I like done. People don't DM me or maybe I just don't look. Oh, people DM you. They don't. I DM you if I was straight and as a gay man, I DM you. Really? Um, you're fucking amazing. You're such a light. You're so talented. I'm so lucky to be in this movie with you. I want everyone to go see the film. It sounds like I'm plugging this film because I am, but I'm mostly plugging. Can't be Mendes because I think she's the most brilliant person. Watch it. The Utka. Watch it. The Utka and watch masters of the universe. Well, masters of the universe coming in June. Indeed. We're all watching that. I hope so. We're all going to watch you do stunts. Yeah. Did you do your own stunts? Yeah. Fuck yeah. But I also have a stunt double. So it's like, who knows which one they picked. Probably not mine. You watch it. You're like, why do I look like that? It's completely different person. It's a different race. I'm like, wow, I'm really good at that. Yeah. Okay. We look into this camera and we say, good night. I love you. Okay. Thank you for coming. Thank you for having me. Ready? Three, two, one.
