Summary

The episode celebrates Apple's 50th anniversary, highlighting how the iPod and iPhone fundamentally transformed consumer technology and daily life. Kim Komando also takes a caller's question about recovering photos from old iPhone backups using third-party tools and cloud services.

Insights
  • Apple's impact stems from just two products (iPod and iPhone) that eliminated entire product categories and industries
  • The iPhone's consolidation of multiple devices (camera, GPS, calculator, flashlight, etc.) into one platform represents unprecedented technological convergence
  • Recovering data from legacy Apple backups requires third-party extraction tools because iTunes backup files are not directly accessible to users
  • Personal data recovery can be emotionally significant and warrants compassionate technical support and multiple recovery pathways

Today, Apple turns 50 years old. This is not a national holiday, but it matters because two products change literally everything. In 50 years, nothing Apple made hit harder than the iPod and the iPhone. The iPod killed the record store. No more CDs, no more store shelves. Artists went straight to you. The iPhone finished the job. And think about what it replaced. Pagers, cameras, film, GPSs, calculators, alarm clocks, even flashlights. In many cases, your laptop, too. It even made the iPod obsolete. No other company has touched your daily life on so many levels. 50 years, two products, that's the whole story. Hi, Don. Hi, Kim. Thanks for taking my call. I really appreciate it. My pleasure. My pleasure. I started listening to you back when I still lived in Las Vegas, your radio show. And since then, I follow you now on the tech update, which I love getting every day and reading the current and I even enjoy the corny jokes that end up there. Yes. Everybody notice there's somebody else in this world who likes my corny jokes. I do. The reason for my call is I'm looking to try to retrieve photos from backups of my previous last three iPhones. I backed up onto my old laptop. And I have an iPhone 12 now, but I'm looking to retrieve photographs of my son who we lost earlier this year. And so... Don, I'm so sorry. Thank you. Appreciate it. It's been pretty tough, but we're doing all right. But there are no new photos of him now. So any that I could retrieve that I know I had some in those old phones would be just wonderful, but I'm just baffled as to how to get to them, how hard it is to get to iPhones. So you backed him up. These are old phones. So you're using iTunes, right? Yes, yes. Okay. What kind of laptop is it? It's a, I think it's an HP and it's running 8.1, but I also have everything backed up to a C gate backup drive also. Okay. All right, there's, I can't tell you the name of the folder on the radio or in a podcast because you would not be able to write it down. Okay. So it's like user app data, roaming, Apple, mobile sync backup, you know. So what we're gonna do is I'm gonna ask, I think Maddie's call screen, I'm not sure who's call screen or Amber's or Amber may be call screen. I'm not sure. There's so many wonderful people to send you the backup location for you to look. Now, or you can get inside Windows File Explorer and you can search for mobile sync, M-O-B-I-L-E-S-Y-N-C, mobile sync, okay. The other thing that you can do is to use the program that can try to find photos on your PC that are, that have been backed up. Programs like IExplore, Dr. Phone, IAmazing. And so what the whole idea is that it's gonna go throughout, it's gonna go on the hard drive and look for any type of photos, okay. That mobile sync that I mentioned is that's where you're going to find the backup, okay. Of the photos that you use with iTunes, with the old photos, but you need a third party tool to get those photos out and that's where IAmazing, Dr. Phone, or IExplore comes in, all right. Okay. You can also look for any type of photo libraries. I'm sure you've already done that. But I think just, that would be the best cases just for you to find those folders and then to use a program to extract those photos out of there. With your son, you may be able to look on, I don't know if you've done this, just throwing it out there. If he had a Google Photos account, maybe there's something there, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Messenger, WhatsApp. Luckily, I was able to access all of his tech and I found a lot of photographs that way. But I've sort of, I've kind of drained that well. I've gotten everything off of there, I can. So this is my last resort and I did find those files. I drilled down in my computer, but of course, they won't reveal them to me. It's sort of like, Yeah, that's why. Okay, so you did find it, that's fabulous. Okay, so now we just need to use the right tool to pull those photos out of it. And then from that, you'll have pictures of your son. It's not easy, but I'm so glad that just now you found the folder, right? I mean, so now we're like, we're going down the right path, okay? So we're gonna find these photos. I'm again, I'm so sorry that you're having to go through this. If you have any trouble using these tools, Don, I want you to call me back. And I have a wonderful IT team and I think everybody needs to have an IT genius. Everybody does. If you have trouble doing this, I don't want you to be, I don't want you to get frustrated in this situation because it's hard enough. This is so kind of you. I really appreciate your help. Well, it's important. It's important, Don. It's important that we help one another. And someday you'll pay it forward to somebody else. I know you will. Yes, man. But right now, right now, it's, you know, it's, but right now you're in a situation where I can help you and I want to help you. So I'm glad that you found the folder while we were talking. And then we're gonna send you out to the tools, iAmazing, Dr. Phone, iExplore, those are the three that we want to look at. And if you have any trouble whatsoever, Don, you just call us. Call me back, okay? I'm gonna give you my personal number and an email. And I'm gonna pray for you and your family, Don. I will.
