Summary

ESPN FC analyzes Atlético Madrid's 2-1 Champions League quarterfinal victory over Barcelona across two legs, with Barcelona's high-pressure tactics exposed by Atlético's clinical finishing and defensive organization. The panel discusses Barcelona's systemic defensive vulnerabilities, Hansi Flick's tactical inflexibility, and what it takes to compete at elite Champions League level. Additional coverage includes PSG's 2-0 victory over Liverpool, Bayern Munich's advantage over Real Madrid, and Arsenal's preparation for Sporting Lisbon.

Insights
  • Barcelona's aggressive high-line defensive strategy creates attacking opportunities but leaves them vulnerable to counter-attacks and forces defenders into desperate decisions that result in red cards—a recurring problem in European competition
  • Elite Champions League teams are decided by marginal details and small mistakes rather than overall quality; Barcelona played well but lost due to individual defensive errors and missed finishing opportunities
  • Hansi Flick's tactical system lacks flexibility and adaptability—Barcelona can only play one way (high pressure, high line) and cannot adjust when running out of steam, making them predictable against organized opponents
  • Atlético Madrid's success comes from understanding opponents' patterns and exploiting them systematically; they identified Barcelona's weakness in dealing with balls played behind the high line and executed it consistently
  • Defensive personnel quality matters significantly in high-risk tactical systems; Barcelona lacks world-class center-backs capable of reading danger and making intelligent positioning decisions required for their system
Trends
High-pressing, high-line tactics are increasingly exposed at elite Champions League level when teams lack elite defensive personnel to execute the system intelligentlyCounter-attacking efficiency is becoming a decisive factor in knockout competition; teams that can transition quickly and finish clinical chances are advancing over possession-dominant teamsTactical inflexibility is a critical weakness in modern football; managers who cannot adjust their system based on opponent patterns or match situation are vulnerable to eliminationRed card accumulation in cup competitions suggests defensive systems are pushing players into desperate, rule-breaking situations; this is becoming a strategic liabilityManagerial communication and emotional control on the sideline directly impacts player performance and confidence; excessive dramatics can transmit fear rather than conviction to playersSet piece and defensive organization are becoming more important than attacking flair in determining Champions League progressionYoung, talented squads with high-intensity systems can dominate domestic leagues but struggle in European competition where opponents are more organized and clinical

Kay Murray, Craig Burley and Stevie Nickel here in the studio kicking things off at the Metropolitan Aware Athlety. We're taking on Barcelona Athlety with the 2-0 lead going into this second leg but it was Barcelona who raced off to a 2-goal lead in the game. In the fourth minute LaMiglia Malewood score and then the 24th minute Ferran Torres would add a second. Just minutes after that Firmin had a chance to make it 3 but instead he would take a boot to the face, the match would be paused for over 4 minutes but he would stay in the game. In the 31st minute though Athlety would pull on back, Ademola Luckman with the goal there and then in the 41st minute Danny Elmore would go down in the box, pushed by Llorente, Coque was there too, Stevie was there a penalty for you? Absolutely not. And then we take it to the latest stages of this game and in the 77th minute Eric Garcia would be given a red card for denial of a goal scoring opportunity on Alexander Solot, was it the right call Stevie? Yeah again referee go it's spot on. 97th minute a big chance would come to Ronaldo Arojo to send it to extra time but he would head it over and it is Athlety progressing on aggregate. Let's welcome in to talk more about this Champions League tie, Stuart Robson, Luis Garcia will hear from both of them in a moment your reaction to what we saw tonight though Craig? Well I wasn't surprised by the way Basa played at the start because we know that's how they can play and it was an exhilarating start and there was two goals and it was good play from Basa but it was also bad play from Athlety and it really was a direct, what was going to say the high line allowed them to play as high up the field, impressed the ball and get that start and scored the goals and pressurised long lay and all that sort of stuff, the high line allowed that but a consequence of the high line and continuing to as Stevie said during the game Gamble, a consequence of that was two red cards over the two games and once again they let it go, it was a consequence of that line and that's the Gamble, the Gamble was it would get them in the game early as they always play it, it would squeeze the game, they would really press Athlety and they'd win it back high and they did all that but unfortunately the other side of it was that when Athlety got some decent possession there was so much space to run into and obviously the Lutmann goal changed the narrative and the momentum of the game a little bit and they've lost two players in both games, Cuba C and Eric Garcia, two centre halves because they've played this line and it's been exposed and defenders have been desperate so from that sense I don't think you can have any complaints of your Barcelona and I don't think many expected it, I'd let it go through but you know I'm saying before the tie started, before both ties started but they didn't buckle when they went 2-0 down they just kept going and kept going and yeah they could have had some more themselves and I felt Basa ran out a bit of steam, we always saw the header in the second half but as they dropped deeper, Athlety that is, as they dropped deeper and deeper we were talking about it, we didn't really see Luminia Malle in the second half doing anything brilliant, I mean there was always bodies around them so in the end not a great night for Basa and I think you saw it with the smile on Simeone's face, a very good night for Athletic Madrid. And Basa got themselves to blame here Robbo? Of course they have because they were in complete control of the game, they should have made it 3-0, the header by Firmin Lopez he should score, it's a good save by the goalkeeper but you're in control of the game, you're tuning up, you've got yourself back in the tie and you've got to be aware of runs in behind, yes I understand they want to play a high line but the two incidents which cost them, Eric Garcia rather than running square across the field, he should be running back towards the corner flag so that when Llorente gets there he can block off the cross but he doesn't, he goes on the wrong angle, the cross comes in and if you saw the league game or the cup game earlier on a few weeks ago the same thing happened when they won the 4-0, those same runs, those same balls, the same run that Lutmann made caused them problems and for the sending off then Martín, Gerard Martín, he's the one that should be dropping off, he should see the danger and you just have to drop off 2 yards and Solot doesn't get in and then as Craig just said then defenders are desperate, then they're trying to get back in, then they make the wrong decision, any sort of contact was going to be a sending off and Eric Garcia fell into it so they've only got themselves to blame in terms of their defending. Luis, what do you think of what the guys are saying? No, we are not talking more about the high line, we are not talking about how Barcelona play because I think it's a good game, both teams, we are talking about two of the best teams in Europe, that's why I let the comedy go to the semifinal, 12-4 in the competition but we are going now to the theme, to the little mistakes, the decisions you have to make, these kinds of games with the amount of your tire, what is around you, the feeling, the emotion, you have to manage a lot of things, we are talking about the best of the best but that's why you have to go to these kinds of moments that Robo is mentioning and the decision of going to one of the crosses, the decision of making a step back is a step forward, the decision of Robo in that situation, if you are on a midnight, probably that will go to Lewandowski, we are talking about a 3-3 equalizer in the competition and they maybe go to XL, so they are very little small details and I think that today, I let the Madrid, was better in that situation, they did one in the first 45 minutes, they did another one for the second goal of Barcelona but that's all about it, they were really organized, they knew they will have at some point one or two, that's why Simeone has been playing against Barcelona in the same way, so in the end we are going to the very small details that's what makes a top, top team, a team that is ready to win the Champions League, to another team that yet they can play well, they probably will a Liga Barcelona, they probably will be next year fighting again for the top competition but when you are talking about the best of the best in the Champions League, those small mistakes from, let's not forget, it's a very young, talented team, they will improve, they will need a couple more 3-3 for next year because in the end when you arrive to those top, top teams, they've been missing, we remember last year against Inter Milan, it was exactly the same, today was at Lettecoye Madrid, so yes, they play a fantastic game but at Lettecoye Madrid, in the both teams, I think in the both games, I think they deserve it because they plan, with the day plan, they work perfectly well. What are the moments that Hansy Flick is going to be ruined now after that game? Oh, I think the big one is, I mean obviously the header at the end but the big change for me was the fairing chance when he ends up getting injured, if that goes in and it's 3-0, sorry for me, for me if that goes in, because up until that point, Lettecoye Madrid had no idea what had hit them, they couldn't keep the ball, they kept giving it away, the odd time they had a hold of it but unfortunately for Barcelona, Barcelona at the best can only play one way and that is high pressure, high line but when they run out of steam as they did today, they can't do anything else, you know, 2-0 after that chance, it should have been right, hold on a second, we need to calm down, we're back in the game, let's just take a little bit of steam out of the game, let's regroup, calm the game down and then we can go again, we've still got another second half to go in, another 15 minutes in the first half, you cannot play 100 miles an hour for 90 minutes, many games that they had this season, 60 games a season, you can't do that, Barcelona are going to have the same problem as long as Hansy Flick is running that team between the end of this season, next season, depending on how long he's going to be there, his problem is always going to be how did he change, how can they play a different way, because right now they can't and as great as it is to watch and as exciting as it is, they ran it adduced today and that for me is his biggest reason why they got beat, because they had nothing left in their legs by what an hour. It was the sixth time they faced each other this season to Stevie's point, it has been fun to watch this tie. But I think at Letty I'm one of the sides that I've done a better job at figuring out how to get the right ball in behind at the right time and I think a lot of that is obviously you've got Sarloth that came on but you get Julio Alvarez that'll run, you've got Juliana that'll run in behind but you've got more importantly you've got Antoine Griezmann picking up some really intelligent positions when Basa have the ball so that if it breaks down they can really pounce and I don't think and that's the reason they're out the Copa del Rey and the reason they're out the Champions League is that Hansy Flick didn't have a proper game plan for when they coughed the ball up, it was just it became too herm scaring in the end, it became just it was almost like getting carried away with the way they were playing which was great but you have to keep the backdoor shot or at least attempt to keep it shot and they never have. So it's the reason they went out in the Champions League last year a big part of it, it's the reason they're out this year, it's not because they're not good going forward, it's not because they don't create chances, it's because they've had a man sent off in both games and they've coughed up goals leaving far too much space now. If you're saying to me well we get success in the Liga by playing this way and we squeeze the pitch and because of the high line we're able to get a lot of pressure I'll give you that, that's fine, that's fine but ultimately the two years in the Champions League is as Luis mentioned when you get into the elite level of this competition the quarterfinals the semi-finals, teams are a bit or they should be, teams are a lot shorter and when you've got this back four playing the way it is then the chances are you're going to get caught out and I thought Letty did a really good job and both especially in both cup competitions you know four nil up at the Metropolitan after the first leg was quite embarrassing really for Bassa even though they almost came back with three goals in the second but again you're asking your players to take these huge gambles and ultimately then you're either losing goals or you're losing players because people are having to make rash decisions because the saw lots and the I can't remember who was in the first game running through on goal Hulia and Alvarez you know two players getting sent off that's a tough healthy climb when you're down to 10 men on both occasions. Luis could Barcelona win the Champions League playing this way in future seasons are they going to have to fine-tune something if they're to do that? Yeah, they can win, yes I think that they can overplay any any team I think they can manage to win many games but if we go again to these kind of moments when you play against top top team they can figure out first of all because the quality the technique the ability because you are arriving to a stage where those small details are the ones who matter the most. Today Barcelona could go through but they always play to score more goals at the opening they know and I think that the possibly has mentioned it quite a few times I know the risks that I'm taking I know that I'm gonna concede chances but what I'm counting on is that go with the way that I play with the aggressiveness of my plays and the intensity I got enough quality and talent up from that I'm gonna score more goals at the opening and today it could have happened that in the first 45 you can just score two goals but in the end you concede that one that one is the one who hurts you the most because you have to again think about scoring twice and today let's not forget there's no Rafinha there, Pernantoli has been in a great shape and Lewandowski has been not the best and when he came on into the field he didn't have enough opportunities so in the end you are again into those little details the fermin chance, the Araujo last minute chance very small details so in the end if you score that couple of locations yes we all have say oh there is a fantastic game they did brilliant and that's what they're going through but in the end if you don't score one of those is what you get you're not going through and that thing is that's going to happen probably next year too you will arrive at this location and if you score those opportunities if you score the chances you're gonna have it could be enough but so far what we've seen is that it hasn't been enough for Barcelona you can play in a fantastic way we can all enjoy that beautiful combination the fantastic way that La Milla Mali is managing and leading this team but in the end those small mistakes that you commit at the back is causing you not going through to the final of the Champions League and I think that you will say hey we are going to see exactly the same the next year. The answer to the question is I think yeah they could possibly win the Champions League with playing that way but not with this personnel not not with this personnel no no Eric Garcia has done a great job for Hansy Flick you know right back you know scent of half midfield and Gerard Martins been you know workman like solid for them and you know but come on come come on I mean who is there any any other you know if it wasn't Needsmoss who's signing Gerard Martins he's not a world-class scent of half. Paul Cubase he wasn't playing tonight as a young man possibly a bright future head and but they haven't got world-class scent of halves he doesn't fancy Ronald Arrucho playing in there even though he's the biggest the strongest and the quickest he doesn't play the offside very well hence he's on the bench so they don't have what you would call world-class defenders and when you're playing that way you're going to have to bail yourself out a lot and that means having you know top defenders they don't they don't have that Joe Cancel is a good footballer he's not he's like Trent Alexander Arnaud he can't he's not a good defender so the answer is you possibly could but you're going to have to go out and bring in real top quality players along that back four and and that's what they don't have. Robber where are you on that question? They can but they have to they can still play their great football they can still have their combination they can still get the brilliant individual individualism individualism I can't even say the word you mean them out you can get all the play down the left hand side the runs of Raphine you can get all that going on for you all you have to do is adjust your defensive line by five or ten percent get players to read danger because the two situations we've just talked about could have been stopped if the two players the two cent halves read the danger they don't have to try and squeeze up to play offside on that occasion somebody's got time on the ball you know that Griezmann's going to play that ball down the side first time you can see the run of your entay so you drop instead of squeezing up and you just defend it then the person doesn't get in behind the same with the second one but it happens week in week out so at the moment with Hansy Flick as the manager and these players as the defensive line they aren't going to win the Champions League but that could be changed if he just wasn't quite as stubborn and just looks at it from a different point of view and changed it by five or ten percent and they would be a much better team because the way they defend at the moment they're always going to concede some chances get players sent off and in the end they're going to lose games. Hansy Flick doesn't have an option actually you know we keep saying about is he going to tweak it but he doesn't have the players that have the brains to tweak it and when we say tweak it we're talking about somebody has to decide when we drop and somebody has to decide when we hold the line that's what normal teams do that's what good teams do but when you've got two centre backs who are not good enough footballers in terms of their brain then Hansy Flick has to make it simple for them and say right when the ball's here we have to hold the line here so from a coaching point of view he's making this simple for his back line because he knows they don't have the football intelligence that he can trust them to decide when we drop and when we stay up and so he has to do a certain thing until he gets two centre backs then nothing's going to change and it won't change. Let's take a look at some of the moments in the game let me come back to you Robo 41st minute did Barcelona have a penalty overlooked here and Daniolmo? No I don't think it is when I was seeing it first time I didn't think it was a penalty there is a slight shove there's a hand on his back and you can see that Kokey puts his arm across but he goes down far to east he's in a great position to go and get his shot away he gets a little shove he goes down too easily I think the referee and the VA were right not to give it. Louise? Yeah I agree I think that Daniolmo finds it easy to go down he feels a little pooch and then he tries to lock going on the floor so very good call I don't see penalty over there. If the push last week for those that can remember by Ibrahim Akinati on on Monday they fell back from PSG wasn't a penalty kick I'm not saying two wrongs make a right but that was a push this this for me it was more a lean from your end he sort of leaned into the back of Daniolmo he felt the contact and bowled himself over and I think the referee spotted that straight away he got he got validation from his VAR but I think that was the right call. Let me say with you Eric Gassi is red card where are you on it? Yeah I'm okay with the red but it is one that you'd have to look at because Cundey is coming round but I think the big thing is and Stevie mentioned this even though Alexander Solov is left footed that doesn't negate the fact he might take this straight plate straight in front of him and take it on his right foot which would then basically negate the ability of Jules Cundey to get round and and stop a goal scoring opportunity because if Alexander Solov takes it on his left foot which is his natural foot Cundey can come in but if he takes it that way he's getting a strike on goal he is getting an opportunity to score if he takes it on his his weaker foot which he is allowed to do so even though it looked like Cundey was probably going to get round I think and that's what the referee saw and with his own eyes I think when he went to the monitor he realized that the big Norwegian was going to be able to get a strike away and hence that's why it was a correct red card. Can Barcelona fans argue Robo that if if Olmo went down too easily Solot went down too easily here? You can but the situation was that you know Eric Garcia cannot touch him he must know that he's in behind him he's racing through to goal he is going to be racing through to goal I cannot touch him and I think by the little shove in the back I think you might have only clicked you might have clicked his own legs Solot but there was a alarm on him there was a slight push and I think the referee had to give it once he saw it once the Solot was on the side as they because they gave him offside to start with so it wasn't going to be a red card it was just a yellow card then they looked at it again he was on the side they looked at the decision I think it's right to send him off because he did make some sort of contact with his arm. Do you think we're going to see the two situation compared Mar-Louise? We can't compare as many times as we want it. Have Barcelona got, have Barcelona got, they can't, they can't, Luisa's just frozen a bit there. Sorry we just lost you there, we'll just take him away. Have Barcelona, have they got the Real Madrid bug disease whatever it is infection at the moment whatever you want to call it come on let's have a little look in here you know let's not look at the excuses of the refs again this called didn't go away that called didn't go away you made you didn't do enough over the two legs you didn't do enough in the Coppa del Rey you didn't do enough in the Champions League you were giving yourself a big mountain to climb you did a great job early on but you got caught out with the same old problems that have afflicted you in this competition before and in other cup competitions in the league they're okay because they know next week's another week and next Tuesday's another game and Saturday's another game and some of the opposition obviously in the bottom half of Spain are a lot weaker and Real Madrid haven't been any great shakes this year we'll see what happens tomorrow when they're playing it by him so it's not about these little decisions going against them it's about the mistakes they made in both these ties and how they got punished for it really. Obviously Diego Simeone rested pretty much everybody at the weekend 11 players playing the weekend and then we do get to see how seriously he took it Robbo let's talk about what they've done in this time what they've been doing against Barcelona in this competition because obviously they're the ones going through to the semi-final tonight. Yeah we all talk about Atalanta Game of Drids sitting deep and making themselves very compact which they do at times but over the two games they have actually tried to press the ball when they thought they could press it a little bit higher up the field they made the game quite open at times and they knew that if they could get Griezmann in that space and find him with the ball he's got the ability to find the right pass and they had runners going from wide. Lukman I thought was was excellent today particularly in the first half up against Cundé he made the right sort of runs he got him in one-v-one situations Simeone himself likes to make those runs when the ball's played in behind and Llorente makes runs from his field but I think Craig said it earlier if you've got Griezmann sitting in that hole and finding that bit of space he's got the cleverness he's got the ability to find the right pass and Athlety over the two games and the Goppedel Ray two games found ways of passing it in behind Barcelona without getting themselves caught offside as much so they've got it absolutely right over the two games they deserve to go through. Next up for them Louise is the winner of the Arsenal Sporting tie so far Arsenal are leading that game 1-0 what type of chance do you give them against Arsenal or Sporting? Again it's 50-50 I mean with Athletic Point Madrid you've seen that it can be the best team in the world and they can do the worst game so it depends what we find into the game what I can assure you is they're going to compete it doesn't matter I think that Arsenal at the moment they are ahead and probably is the team that is going to go through but Arsenal is going to find a team that is going to be waiting their opportunities and we've seen it so far many many times there with this Athletic Madrid not only now but in the years that Simeone has been in the Athletic Point Madrid it's a very well organized and maybe this year it wasn't enough to compete for La Liga because that big load they had during the middle of the season but they go so much talent all around the pitch and they got a very deep squad where you can find players in all kinds speed players on the wide area suddenly you can use Nico as we saw it today on the right side to hold right for and then he can play on the left side and then you go Lukman who kind of gave us something different from this Athletic Madrid that is a little bit more accuracy at the front and more clinical situation he arrives in the right position he doesn't make too many things during the game he's waiting for his opportunity but when he's on the ball it's always dangerous and I think that they found the best Griezmann at the right time Griezmann is being waiting his opportunity we all know that H doesn't help on these kind of games but I think that we are seeing the best of Griezmann at this stage and when he's on the ball anything can happen today it was all about moving the ball quickly to one side to the other side to avoid the pressure of Athletic Madrid arriving to the right spot we saw him defending last game against Barcelona when when he was needed so he provides you all that and with Julian and Julian Alvarez doing the best of the best at the front I think this Athletic Madrid is ready to fight any kind of teams and again they're going to have opportunities and if they use it like they did with Barcelona then why not we can see Athletic Madrid once again in another final okay thanks so much for being with us Luis win-win for you Barcelona win on the night Athletic win the tie we'll speak to you again soon but when it does come to European Cup history between the two Athletic have had Barcelona's number look at this quarter final stages and not good for Barcelona if they do come up against Athletic and in two of those games Athletic have gone on to reach the final could be a big week for Diego Simeone's men Copa del Rey final coming up on Saturday against Real Sociedad our coverage will begin 2 30 p.m Eastern ESPN plus has you covered for that big game Thrive and believes money is more than numbers it's a way to care for the people causes and community you love that's why Thrive and brings together a unique combination of financial services and generosity programs offering advice investments and insurance to help you plan your finances while creating opportunities to give back along the way through generosity programs that offer resources to fund service projects or direct charitable funds Thrive and makes it easier to turn your values into action and support what matters most to you with more than 120 years of experience and as a fortune 500 company Thrive and continues to serve individuals families and communities across the country to learn more visit Thrive and dot com Thrive and where money means more a so-fi personal loan is here to help you achieve something once thought impossible overcoming high interest credit card debt what the tightrope of your finances with one low fixed rate monthly payment no fees required and as soon as the same day funding that's right pull off your own debt defying stunt with so-fi personal loan visit so-fi.com slash trick to learn more loans originated by so-fi bank na member fdic terms and conditions apply nml 696891 at anfield Liverpool were looking to turn things around against PSG but it was not to be in the 28th minute not good news for Liverpool Uwaga TK went down and had to be stretched off most allow would come on for him the player in some distress and in some pain as he was taken off to the 64th minute we go though and you wondered if it was a penalty for Liverpool as Alexis McAllister went down under patch out penalty for you stevy absolutely not 73rd minute is when PSG would go ahead Dembele scored the first of the goals and the second on the night as well in the 91st he made it 2-0 on the night 4-0 on aggregate and PSG progress. Frank Leboff was watching this for us he joins us now Stuart Robson still with us too but stevy I'll start with you do you know I have to admit around the 65th minute I sat there to think they might have a chance here because up until then I wasn't feeling it up until then I was happy that Liverpool had been competing because this this game was was a competition you know both sides not too many chances but particularly Liverpool in that second half absolutely tore in to PSG now unfortunately for Liverpool the final pass the final decision the final whatever it was in that attack and third the ball just wasn't slightly off it was awful I mean it was awful the amount of times that the pass was missed by good half half a yard to a yard in and around that penalty box was just way too much but then of course we know what PSG are like on the break the movement the quality of the passing you know you're talking about two great passes two great decisions and two finishes I mean that's that's basically what they gave to this game and it was too much of a Liverpool but in terms of the whole game if Liverpool between now and the end of the season can show the same spirit the same desire the same quality from the back to the front then they will get a champions league spot obviously they have to do way better in the final third but in terms of the game I thought it was a good a good competition and I was happy that Liverpool competed until that goal in the 71st minute. It was the same score line as the first leg but it wasn't the same. Chalking cheese was. Embarrassment you know the game in Paris could easily have been six and that's not a stretch to say that and so there was a much more competitive edge to Liverpool particularly up until that box but I can't help but feeling that again with a 2-0 lead PSG were Kenny cotton between two stools here about how to approach the game don't want to do it don't you know want to try and dominate it and put it to bed but don't want to leave ourselves open so you're gonna kind of get caught maybe half and half and that allowed Liverpool to get a foothold in the game and but they didn't take the chances and ultimately the best team by a stretch over the two legs is going through here. There wasn't a lot of confidence Frank in the studio yesterday that Liverpool were going to turn it around against this PSG. And that's fair you know after the first leg and what we have seen and Craig just said it you know Paris could have easily win like 6-0 but as we said after the first leg Paris German didn't finish the job and and could have been in danger and they were in danger if the first half they were the game was quite balanced and I think Paris and German wasn't in danger whatsoever as the guy said again they couldn't believe it couldn't finish the job in in their in their actions in the second half I started to get a little bit you know nervous and I say well you know if Paris is Liverpool scores and we had that penalty it wasn't a penalty of course but that was intense for like a minute we say oh if Liverpool scored that penalty one nail it can be a different story and we know the pressure it can feel and and fine in in Enfield so they were close to a kind of a miracle I would say that overall the best team won but don't forget that Saffonoff had nine saves they gave the best the trophy on the best player to them believe he scored two goals but we barely saw him before those two goals but Saffonoff had nine saves so he sees a lot about what Liverpool was able to do in the second half putting the European champion in in in a big threat what was your biggest takeaway Robbo from this game well the first in the first time I didn't think Liverpool played with any composure yes they worked are they trying to close PSG down but PSG played with more composure but it all changed actually with the substitutions Salla came on and although he wasn't at his best he still did some very good things Gakpo at centre forward was better than Isaac was because Isaac had no contribution in the first half whatsoever and Fringpong look nervous gave the ball away cheaply in the first half as well and Gomez came on and then Subba Sly had to go back to right back but I thought the changes in Liverpool played well in the second half and had the penalty been given it was right not to be given even though Mark Klattenberg on the English television said it was absolutely a penalty and they don't know why VAR was called in until we had to be a penalty that sums it up really doesn't it but anyway but and and in the end they didn't quite have enough composure in front ago as Stevie said the final pass the final shot wasn't quite good enough and the two breakaway goals were enough for PSG but over the course of the two games PSG have been brilliant haven't they Klattenberg trying to make friends that's what he's trying to do just like us that's what we do we always try and make friends don't we yeah of course you're so friendly to everybody you're on but I mean we're not here I'm not with this doubt not with this lot no but we're talking about people watching you know just trying to make this it's not always try be nice how can you say that's a penalty Frank is this PSG as good as last season's I would say so I wouldn't say so sorry I think they they showed that some games can Chelsea away from home at home against Liverpool last time yeah they showed us still there and when they are they're all together playing all together today we didn't see a big man there she got injured we didn't see a strong Akimi Vittinia was in the Vittinia that we saw on the first leg they they kind of sometimes get shaky and make ourselves being shaky as well because we don't recognize them but they were strong today they were strong on the back with Patio with Marquinhos making a great save on the in front of Van Dijk and of course again Safonov making those saves so they showed today that without being good they are quite resilient and they don't give up and they and they and they and they do the job but keep the clean sheet but no they're not as good as they were last season but so far so good and let's see how it goes against Bayern Munich or Real Madrid that's going to be a different story I think both would be brilliant wouldn't I PSG against either Bayern or Real Madrid yeah I hope it's Bayern because no PSG against Bayern would be brilliant PSG Bayern I hope it's Bayern yeah that would be a great game you got two teams that want to go that way two teams that are not interested in sitting and defending and try to counter I mean that would be fantastic so there's respect to Real Madrid but yeah that would be great Bayern Munich PSG it's a shame actually that is you know semi not the final yeah I mean it is right it's the it's the draw you got Adletti actually playing better stuff at the moment than in the other semi final probably against Arsenal who are not playing well at all but you know the way Bayern played in that in that first game they got to feel good about about going through but if it is to be Bayern and it's still a bit of an if that is a coin toss that game isn't it PSG and Bayern that really is a toss to the coin because so much attacking talent on both sides but but yeah obviously Bayern got somewhat to do tomorrow against Real yeah PSG with a squatter settle against Bayern as well we'll see if that is the case but when it does come to English opposition in the Champions League knockout stage did they advance yes on every single occasion against Liverpool Chelsea Arsenal Villa and Liverpool again so PSG seem to do pretty well against the English teams okay the Allianz Arena tomorrow Bayern bringing a 2-1 lead over Real Madrid into the second leg these are some notes about that tie Bayern have advanced in 12 of its previous 13 Champions League knockout stage ties after winning the first leg on the road Real Madrid have been eliminated in each of its previous five European knockout stage ties after losing the first leg at home most recently that happened in the 2019-20 season against Man City and Tjormany is suspended Real Madrid is one win two draws and one loss without Tjormany this season in the team so let's get some predictions from our panel everybody has got Bayern going through that's how things stand as it is right now what do you expect in Robbo in this game tomorrow well I'm expecting Bayern to dominate the play and we saw in the first game that Real Madrid can be a threat on the counter attack we're going to see more of that Bayern will dominate possession they will create chances I think they're going to win the game by as you saw there 2-1 but it won't be as easy as as maybe some people think because Real Madrid were a threat on the counter attack sometimes Bayern just leave their two centre-halves back push their full backs on Kimmich isn't the quickest when he's defending in central midfield so I think it's going to be 2-1 but it'll be a tight a tight game which Bayern dominate most of the play the trailing in La Liga nine points behind Barcelona yeah that's thanks are against the wall here does that change things uh not really they're still a dangerous team when you call for possession up because Vinicius and Mbappe will cheat and by that I mean they they'll they'll take a chance by not coming back and they'll just hope that they can spring them over the top and if Jonathan Tain and Pomecama are two on two and they're sleeping or they're not in good positions they'll get punished but if Bayern are Bayern the both teams created a lot of chances in the first game but a lot of Real Madrid's chances were from sort of outside the box and Neuer made some great saves but Bayern if they can be clinical in that final third they will they should create a lot of chances if they can be clinical I think they can put this game to bed because they are the better side they're the slicker side they're better organised they pass it better the passing movement is excellent but they they've got to be careful they don't get undone by those two players that I mentioned on the counter attack by Bayern Munich if both of these sides are at the best Bayern Munich are still streets ahead of Real Madrid in my opinion you know when we always talk about Real Madrid when they're not favourites we talk about game match winners match changers Bayern Munich have got probably more match winners in their team than Real Madrid have so whichever way you want to look at this game there's no question this is Bayern Munich still losing my opinion because the way they're playing the chances they create every single game this is not this is not a fluke this is what they do they've done it all season and you look at Real Madrid we're talking the complete opposite we don't know what we're going to get from Real Madrid there's no consistency yes they've got talent but when you play against the proper team in Bayern Munich you're going to need more than a couple of pieces of individual brilliance that's why I'm going for Bayern as well and what's what's Arbalo's plan for Mr Alissi has he got one who's the incumbent coming in at left back to try and stop arguably the hottest property and certainly the most informed player in European football at the moment and don't forget the dynamic with that French front line looks like it's going to change now possibly with the injury to Ekotiki so that's all going to shuffle around we're talking about playing Alissi as a 10 and whatnot but he is on fire right now so you know he had his way with Carreras last week and quite simply if that happens again you know how Bayern are not going to score goals in this game so yeah they got there's a bunch of them they've got to stop there's de-ass it might be Mussiala might be might be Harry Kane but they definitely got to stop this guy otherwise it's curtains yeah Frank you're going for Alissi and Bayern and not your friend Mbappe and Real Madrid no because from what I saw all season long and also in the first leg where clearly Real Madrid existed because Bayern Munich allowed them to but otherwise before they got sloppy Bayern Munich were so dominant that it could have been a real lesson for them so I expect second leg oh we're losing everybody tonight oh no and Munich team finishing the job and all the players that we know are good enough to finish the job at front they are simply amazing Alissi the first of course yeah okay so let's talk about Mbappe because there's been a comment made by the CTA the technical committee of referees about this remember the penalty that wasn't in the 88th minute against Girona yes and Mbappe struck in the face by Vitor Reiss and you see he was bleeding afterwards the referee waived play on VAR chose not to intervene Arbeloas said it was a penalty here and on the moon well the CTA have acknowledged that the challenge should have been a penalty but they have defended VAR's decision not to overrule the on-field decision but that doesn't make sense doesn't that just annoy Real Madrid even more now if they're saying it should have been a penalty but well you see that two things can't be true here surely can you see you can't well you can't if you're in Spain you can't be saying what is it the CTA yeah whatever the hell they call that I don't know who cares they can't be saying it's a penalty and then saying VAR were correct not to intervene it's one or two other rubber you were on the call for the game yeah I called it as a no penalty and but Craig's absolutely right and it's in the box so the VAR is going to be looking at doesn't have to go to the VAR the VAR is looking at it and he can say to the referee it's a 50-50 here do you want to have a look at it but he obviously didn't do that and they say he was right they were right not to do that but they then said it was a penalty it contradicts its own views so I don't get it at all but I wouldn't have given a penalty in the first what's the worst line it's a penalty but VAR did right not getting involved or respect the ball which one's the worst because they're both they're both as daft as each other but I think this one's got to be more annoying for the fans right for the Real Madrid fans oh they don't need much to get annoyed you just scratching your head doesn't make any sense to anybody so what you're actually saying they're not actually saying anything it's either a penalty or it's not a penalty and if you're turning the penalty then VAR should have got involved so how can you say yeah you can't it's that was a big moment just daft well the Freya Madrid are season hinges on a penalty against a Girona strike a Girona side that I have struggled most a lot of the season we're in the relegations zone they've done a bit better recently but if they're so desperate that they need that at home later on against Girona that tells you where they are they're not nine points behind Barcelona because they've been had decisions against them let's see how they fare tomorrow and there will be back in action in La Liga right here on ESPN plus on April 21st against Alaves Barcelona will be taking on Celta the following day G1 weight loss shots are popular they're everywhere but not for second favorites in the champions league but in the pre-match press conference michel Arter was asked how he's going to rally his players after a difficult run and the mental challenge of getting arsehole over the line and what I basically said guys we are trying to do something and in this competition that uh that hasn't been done in the history of the club in hundred and forty years so that says you the difficulty of that and what you guys are doing is the first time that we are three years in a row in the quarterfiles on the champions league the first time in our history for all the clubs that's the daily meal for us now what do you want from from the team tomorrow in terms of performance and from the crowd no fear purifier that's it me the first one purifier that's what I want to see on the players and the people myself that's it go for it because the opportunity is unbelievable we are in April we have an incredible opportunity ahead of us let's confront it let's go for it in the I really put in absolutely everything into it can you give us an idea of your overriding emotions just now is there any worry anxiety or is it more fire i'm on fire that's it nothing else i'm dreaming so much i've done so much you know to be in this position because i know how this club it was i i i i've done so much against anything that this is beauty i just see beauty opportunity and yeah i want to get it done for all these people that they've been in this journey with us um and because they deserve because you've been unbelievable that's what is driven me every single day have zero fear fear i had when oh if we don't get this done this club i don't know what is going that was fear now there's no fear it's just purpose fire direction and conviction that we're gonna do it are you seeing this fire in your place yes yes big time zero fear loads of fire team are playing me a lot of fear at the moment see it i when they fire either somebody's bit of fire up yeah there's a few ashes at the bottom it's what what did you think of what did you think of what you had to say he just keeps going giving didn't he he just keeps on giving how about we just try and act normal for once just be like a normal coach what would a normal response have been well just just don't don't come like when you start coming out with all these buzz words buzz words and all this stuff the reporters are sitting going oh brilliant somebody can get after them again now it's the same question that we've just been talking about oh oh the smart alley comments the fire's out and the fire brigade's putting it out and the whole thing just be normal and just trying trying deflect any attention away from yourself and he's coming out with stuff about other team three years in a row in a quarter final is daily meal to other teams well clearly it's the same for them they've been there three years in a row right so that's normal for them but what you've got to do now is take the other step forward i just don't understand how he has to keep coming up with stuff that reporters they just feed off it just be a normal coach say something normal we're going to do our best 100 as well as do don't give them anything just keep he just keeps throwing them lines man so this quite some time ago should have been a bit of a formality sporting lisbon and it may be so but this is a side that we're woeful against Bournemouth at the weekend they were woeful against southampton a championship team they were horrendous in the caribou cup final against man city i mean they sat in there like a pub team and allow city dominated game they didn't look like the team that were top of the league and the best team in england at the time they looked like a scared side and it's been hard for them to get out of it they've got playmakers who are either injured out the team are not playing well you've got sacuh has been out the team but he wasn't playing well you got all these facets of the game that was rock solid that are not anymore from attacking to zubimendi and rice in the middle of park to the set pieces and all of that stuff and anything other than a comfortable or anything other than a win and going through against sporting lisbon will be seen that there's nothing else that's been failure they're not playing psg or biome or even an off-colour ray of madrid they're not they're playing the weakest team left in this competition so that puts a pressure on makul atteta that puts a fear he's blind that's the fear for makul atteta the fear is that the way they're playing there is a chance they might go out against the weakest side by far left and no matter what he tells you that's a fear that's gripping him at the moment as is the fear that sitting around the corner that they're playing well the asshole or not and he has to find a way to somehow get this going again in a short period of time and i think that's the big question we're all asking are they going to get it going again and the players listening to that are not going to do he's sitting team cringey's told you what they've been like the last three games he's so solid the fire and he's just told the players are in fire i mean the players are going to be sitting listening to they'll because they'll they'll hear all this and they'll be going gaffer's lost the plot by the way who's he kidding is it fear or fire for you rubbo a fear absolutely and who puts the fear in the players it's the manager if you watch the performance against baumuth at the weekend not by the players not by the crowd who booed ask them off the pitch at halftime and at the end of the game if you looked at the difference between iri eola on the side of the field giving information and being quite calm and when goals were scored he wasn't jumping around like a lunatic and then you watched al tetra's performance on the side of the field it's embarrassing he's he's giving the players the fear he's giving the crowd the fear he's jumping up and down he's out the technical area running up and down the touch line the play who's he doing it for the players benefit because i don't think the players are listening is he doing it for the fans benefit i don't think they're listening now or is he doing it for the for the owners or is he doing it for himself i think he's doing it for himself more often than not and he's the one that is producing over emotion from the players and too much fear prank yeah i agree with that i mean sometimes you have to show and be the example of of what you expect from the players so big nervous doesn't help us and definitely you know if you're shook on if you're like ancelotti at the time where he was the best he was there he was he was he knew exactly what to show to the kid to his players and that that's what i don't understand with me a kella tita and after on the press conference the guy is complaining about everything he's saying stuff that that Steve said we don't get you know because uh don't talk like that he doesn't help anybody so just be calm in a way that you express to the player where what you want where do you want to go and what he wants to do is to make sure that everybody's part on in one goal and not on everything and that's the problem with michela tita i think he wants to please too many people okay let's take a look at the predictions of the panel ahead of that game tomorrow that tie arsenal leading 1-0 everybody has got arsenal going through and getting the job done on the night too we'll be talking about it of course on tomorrow's espn sb be sure to be with us as we'll look back on that and the game between bayan and real madrid so this is reaction to the hair pull yesterday from losandro martínez who was red carded for pulling the hair of dominic calvert louis in in the manchester united leads game well here is manchester united manager michael carrick on the matter the arm in the face of the zandre we start with he gets an arm in the face so he's kind of off balance and the kind of off grappling he almost almost just goes to touch him and grab his shirt and he ends up catching his hand touches the back of his hand the bubble comes out and you get a red card for it it's not it's not aggressive there's no job there's no tug there's no sudden movement he kind of touches it and glances through it and he's got to be careful where the game's going if we give him red cards for that but then you can do arm two arms in the face the red card and to go up the first goal and that's deemed all right so it's a shocking decision absolutely shocking this Lenny Eurow gets a forearm smashing the back of his head it's worth looking again if you haven't seen that which i don't know if you're getting the sending off for what we're getting the sending off for i don't know how that doesn't get overturned as it goes a clear as clear forearm smashing the side of his head so that that first goal shouldn't stand the red card i mean that's that's i have to say that's really concerning if that's going to be a sending off i know he touched his hair he can't deny touched his hair there's a difference between touching somebody the way he has and brushed his hair to actually really aggressively um tugging on it which is certainly we've seen at certain points where there's a real kind of emphasis to that's just yeah that's really concerning after so yeah we were talking about this yesterday weren't we stevie where you do feel that it is harsh but it is a red card and just over on our website at the moment tspn to andy davie says following a new directive this season there's a strict threshold whenever hairpolling occurs it's seen as a non-football action it's not acceptable within a typical challenge so it must be deemed violent conduct and sanctioned with the red cards referees what do you think it's harsh soft you come up with all the terms you want but he's he's no question he's got a hold of it i mean he hasn't brushed that he's actually he there's actually a point where there's a certain amount of time where he's actually held on so he can't complain and actually he's complaining about about euro well if euro had attacked the ball he wouldn't have ended up getting caught now does he get caught yes but if you're going to play against the center forward and challenge for a ball then you better attack the ball and don't stand there and jump straight up because it's a physical game and you're going to get caught so don't complain about euro yes i agree if you're going to complain you complain about the red card you say it's soft we all think it's soft but at the end of the day he's actually had the motion to pull his hair and so the referee going by the guidelines it's a red card but don't start complaining about things where actually the problem is your center back he should attack the ball instead of standing waiting for it and jumping straight up maybe the maybe the next time michael karak's team play leads or anybody else who's got a you know pretty physical front man maybe he can ask them dominant calvert learn maybe before the game say would you mind jumping with your arms at your side because he calls it a forearm smash and you know any player we saw an incident in the basalona game tonight with gavi and was it rosiery where unfortunately there was a fair bit of blood but it wasn't an elbow it was an arm when he was jumping as was calvert learn the arm for the jump he is one of the better he has got one of the better springs in the Premier League and that's for the pull pulling of the hair a few challenge and look at the watch so he's got momentum he leads he leads with his arm but his arm is there this is the best angle his arm is there to prepare him right and i go back to the hair one if you jump with a defender with an open palm right and not a closed closed palm closed fist with an open palm it's impossible to pull somebody's hair because somebody's going to have to tell david moise and michael karak and one or two other managers because i'm referring to the michael keen incident where he was sent off and david moise seemed to be perplexed is that it's a simple law of the game you're not alone i've seen it with kukarela and obviously there's some players have got longer hair much longer than others so there's there is this temptation but there can't be a temptation because the law says you cannot pull somebody's hair whether it's aggressive or not so michael karak has absolutely no complaints once again a manager talking about decisions when his team have been beaten and haven't played well rubble well the best thing that happened to matches united is that lizzandro martinez got sent off because after that they started to play well they were two and a half down at that point they came back into the game they started to create chances that was the best they've played after that yeah i don't think he's got anything to complain about the rules of the rules and that was the case and it's when you go when you leave with your arms sometimes you're trying to protect a head on head collision and that's what exactly what calvert lewitt is doing he's getting he's propelling himself but he's also stopping the head on head collision which is the worst collision out of all forget the arm it's the head on head collisions that cause the real really bad injuries it's obviously not a concern for for yourself are you right now frank but where are you on the hair pulling oh that's oh you that's terrible i knew it was coming hey y'all it's kelly clarkson with wayfair ever order furniture online and wonder what if like what if it doesn't fit uh little to the left oh wait yep should have gone with wayfair or what if for any discussion about hair but but in a serious way i really think that's that's only fair you know i disagree with michael carrick we can see and clearly see that his alessandro matinez is looking for it and he keeps on doing it it's not like i pull and i and i take my my hands off no my end of sorry he keeps on doing it so even when the cavat living living is so is moving and turning back so that's clear i think it's a good thing you cannot use that you cannot pull shirts you cannot pull hair so it's only fair for me okay now there we go everybody saying that's okay i know that you've uh know that i've berated them you're having them a bit of a jay but they're follicle challenged pair they can take it you can try they give as good as they get and they'll be giving as good as they get on extra time make sure to check it out over on our youtube channel craig and steve will be answering your questions as well have you in my shirana with stepping down as head coach it's into miami effective immediately the club have cited personal reasons for his resignation and he leaves along with his entire coaching staff remember he led miami to their first ever mls cup title in december and he leaves the team third in the eastern conference that's all we've got time for in the latest edition of esp nfc but say right where you are extra time is on the way next robo and frank are sticking around to answer your questions so too the steve and craig so we'll see you over there in just a minute yeah here we are extra time extra time coming up tonight let me see if i've got the questions in my email you do that all right maybe we could just bring them up on here and we'll we'll tell you what they are all right thank you so much for sending in your questions first up is john norris frank is psg going to take the weekend off before every one of its champions league matches i don't know that i mean he's been sold out and accepted by the league one committee to have a week off you know before that game and they should have played a thing against lance and lance uh uh we're very happy because they wanted to take an opportunity to maybe beat our essential men to be close to them because i just remind you that they're second in the league lance uh and they want to chase for your tournament i think even it's going to be hard but i i don't think it's going to be possible i mean the the end of the season is getting cloudy and uh and every day is complicated to uh to change it as you postpone it so i'm not sure they're going to have the possibility to do every time the thing that they've done uh this weekend aside from steve was anyone watching the psg match yeah that's who we were i were watching it we had but we had uh we had six screens with two games every screen so yeah we were watching this so rich yeah we're always watching it we could have the commentary we've only had yeah i was watching it yeah i was watching it yeah yeah i mean the basa game was it certainly was more enthralling wasn't it but then this liver pill became competitive yeah here is something about liverpool and steve for all were you surprised by slots starting 11 and the performance that how liverpool did an amazing performance maybe liverpool lost because steve didn't have confidence as follows up my previous question last time see it's your fault steve it looks like it it does yeah well but the rest of the season well i thought they would win but you're actually happy even though they're lost about what you've seen from them today it seems they're happy as yeah i mean as i said the the second half after about 65 minutes i was thinking you know if they get a go here because they would they would i mean psg were camped on the edge of the box um they're starting 11 i thought in gamore should have started and we saw when he came on the difference he made you know some passes some shots at goal because just he he in general lifts everything now at the end of the day the the front line that started wasn't particularly bad if you're gonna if you if you want to put verse in the team then i get it that he supposedly starts on the left you got a katiki sorry on the right you get a katiki who has to play an isak listen you've got him available although he didn't do a lot and he's clearly not 100% you're looking for something special why not give it a go but i thought in gamore should have come on earlier okay frank simione is the best manager in the world to get the best out of his players question mark um it's one of the best uh and it's true that he knows how to put how to put out the best of his players you know and asking them to play 100% to give everything and to be ready to to die for the for for the club and the team that they play for and that's true and that that you have to to accept that maybe the tactic is not the best maybe the way we see uh tzatziko madrid playing is not the best but he knows how to give all the strength and the mentality to uh to for the players to give their best and that is true that's a fact that's really a fight and he's been there uh for four years now robo do you agree with that he's developed a culture at the club he knows exactly what he wants from his players the players know what they want or he wants from them at the crowd know exactly what style of football they're going to get uh is he the greatest manager uh to get the best out of his players uh i'd be interested to see if he went to somewhere like basalona and whether they would accept his style of play whether they would accept his uh antics on the side of the field i don't think they would he's a very very good manager uh atledigo madrid i'm not sure he's a great manager or would be a great manager somewhere else kreek who's looking forward to an athletic arsenal semi-final yeah but it might be a listen it might be okay who knows i tell you what though let's hear the more exciting team out of the two at the moment and that even with all of us i'll say that yeah that's where arsenal are at the moment and let's hear a dangerous team going forward unfortunately for them they're a little dangerous to themselves at the back at times as well but uh talking about lettuce with that last question if semi-one is that great which listen that was a great result tonight what how come once again they're a country mile off the title race in spain i don't know is that no did that not count no come alive in the cup competitions this year cup of del Rey if i know they'll probably they're the favorites against soshidad and uh dare i say it you could say they're the favorites against arsenal at the moment possibly would you look forward to that robo and athletic arsenal semi i'll tell you what i'm not looking forward to i'm doing the game tomorrow sporting arsenal versus sporting lisrael i'm not looking forward to that too much after the first leg uh but i think the game would be different against athletic there'd be a lot of a lot of jeopardy on it it would be exciting it would probably not be great football but it would be exciting uh and probably probably controversial i think there'd be a lot of bookings and maybe a couple of red cards the managers will probably have a fight on the touch line it'll be it'll be great yeah all right we'll see how it all plays out if that's to be the case all right steve eleverpool started both of their new strikers both of their new attacking fullbacks their new attacking midfielder and still couldn't score is this the fault of the players or the manager well this is the fault of the players you know i said they learned the show that when they got to the final third the decision making an actual pass or whatever it was that we're trying to do was wasn't close it wasn't it wasn't a minute a millimeter of being perfect or a millimeter of somebody going through they were miles off and the slot can't pass the ball for players he can take the blame for a lot of things when it comes from passing the ball five yards in the correct position at the correct weight to the correct foot and the slot can't do that the players are the ones that do that and nobody today could do that properly you can't point a finger it's slot for that rubbo on a previous extra time you said to frank laboff that if you're bald you grow a beard to compensate for no hair on top is that the case for you absolutely yeah i i sometimes want to put the head upside down but i i looked at frank and i thought frank looks the business he's a film star he's you know great looking all those sort of things and i think i want to look i want to be just like him unfortunately i've failed miserably i know i like it do we like the beard look on robos that's not true this is glasses yeah you need the glasses that frank frank you can be the judge do we like robos look with the beard and and know the glasses i love it i love it i know it's funny because when you started the show hey you see you see you will look like twins you know i was looking at uh morning when he was playing for us and all and when he when he when he had hair and uh really i love him like that you know he looks better he looks better nothing to complain about i love you frank as well i think you're great this is all a fire and none of the i think you're great you're quite mate yeah good you deserve more than i do mate thank you so much guys for sending in your questions and thank you robo for putting those glasses on and just completing the look today we'll be back tomorrow with more champions league talk
