Summary

Mackenzie Ayers, director of communications for Kansans for Life, discusses recent legislative victories in Kansas including the passage of the Pregnancy Care Act, which protects pregnancy centers from government discrimination. She outlines upcoming priorities including blocking Medicaid funding to abortion facilities and strengthening informed consent laws, while promoting the organization's April 14th banquet featuring CNN personality Scott Jennings.

Insights
  • Pro-life advocacy groups are shifting strategy to focus on protecting existing support infrastructure (pregnancy centers) rather than pursuing direct abortion restrictions in hostile political environments
  • Legislative override of gubernatorial vetoes represents a viable pathway for advancing policy priorities when executive leadership is opposed to the movement's agenda
  • Framing abortion policy around 'compassion for women' and tangible support services (free ultrasounds, parenting classes) is being used to build broader coalition support
  • State-level budget provisions are being leveraged as vehicles to advance policy goals (Medicaid provider disqualification) that might face direct veto if introduced as standalone bills
  • Pregnancy centers are becoming a focal point for pro-life advocacy as they provide measurable, non-controversial services that generate positive public perception
Trends
Increased state-level attacks on pregnancy centers in progressive states (California, New Jersey) creating defensive policy responses in conservative statesPro-life movement pivoting from restriction-focused legislation to infrastructure protection and support service expansionUse of state budget reconciliation as a legislative tactic to embed policy priorities that are harder to veto individuallyGrowing emphasis on informed consent and women's support services as messaging strategy to counter 'pro-choice' framingPartisan polarization in state legislatures making gubernatorial veto overrides a critical success metric for advocacy organizationsPregnancy centers expanding service offerings (free ultrasounds, parenting classes, post-pregnancy support) to position as comprehensive women's health providers

Well, coming up is the Kansans for Life banquets. Always a great time right here in Overland Park. A CNN star, Scott Jennings. Yes, the guy who loves to own the Libs on CNN is going to be out here for KFL. It's coming up on April 14th. We'll tell you how to get involved, how to come out, how to get your tickets. I'll be the emcee happening on Tuesday, April 14th. Mackenzie Ayers is the director of communications for Kansans for Life, joining us right here on KCMO Talk radio. Mackenzie, let's just start with some of the wins that KFL has had in the legislature this year in Topeka. What have those been for people who have not been paying as much attention? Absolutely. It's been a very, very busy legislative session. I think Kansans should know that pro-lifers have had to endure eight years of Governor Laura Kelly, who is the most pro-abortion governor in our state's history. But thankfully, we have some common-sense legislators who are stepping up and fighting back last week. So all of our pro-life priorities have been sent to the governor's desk. And last week, Kansas legislators very quickly overrode Governor Kelly on something that's a very common-sense policy. It's called the Pregnancy Care Act. And all that law does is protect the more than 50 pregnancy centers across Kansas from being forced by state or local government agencies to act against their mission or beliefs. So we've seen statewide, or sorry, nationally, attacks on pregnancy centers are growing. In states like California and New Jersey, states are requiring these pregnancy centers to publish lists of private donors or to post things inside of their centers, referring for abortion. And we wanted to put something forward that was proactive that protects our pregnancy centers so that they're able to continue providing the life-affirming care to women and families across our state. So that was passed by both chambers. The governor vetoed it. And within hours, the legislature came back together and overrode her veto. So here, student Kansas, PRCs across the state will be able to operate and provide life-affirming support to women and families free from government discrimination. Wow, that is such a win. And it seems to me like, you know, at a time when obviously you're going up against a governor that just is not gonna sign seemingly any piece of legislation that you even, you know, tepidly support or endorse, what has that uphill battle been like for you over the last several years? And how have you tried to just find the wins where you can to keep the movement moving forward? Well, absolutely. We are focused on compassion for women because we believe that behind every single one of those lives that we have lost to abortion is a woman who maybe felt like she had no other choice. And so it's sad but not surprising to see the governor just fight back against us at every single turn. These pregnancy centers are providing free, real tangible help to women and families. Things like free pregnancy tests, free ultrasound, free parenting classes, support during pregnancy and after pregnancy. So we're just continuing to just fight back and say, no, it's certainly hard, but thankfully we have some common sense legislators in there, like by the people who are doing just a great job. Other things that we're happy to fight back against the governor on are, we're assuming that she's going to veto some important pieces of legislation coming up in the next couple of weeks. We put two things inside of the state budget. One ensures that Kansas hardworking taxpayer dollars are not going to the abortion industry. So we are disqualifying abortion facilities from serving as Medicaid providers. So we expect that she will veto that and we'll be ready to go because Kansas should have confidence that their tax dollars are not being directed to substandard clinics. And then again, just continuing to uplift and support women just funneling money to these pregnancy centers and just strengthening informed consent so that women, if they're going in for an abortion, that they're being provided with all of the options. And Laura Kelly loves to say that she's pro-choice unless that choice is a woman choosing life. So we are here to walk alongside these women and provide them with compassionate support. Well said. All right, coming up here on April 14th, the big KFL banquet in Overland Park, Scott Jennings, Rockstar at CNN is going to be here that night. I'm always grateful to be your emcee, Mackenzie. So we invite people to go to kfl.org to purchase tickets. This is one night out of the year where pro-life first come together to celebrate the victories that we are seeing here about the vision moving forward. Scott Jennings, I think is going to be great. I help people make the smartest money decisions possible. Joe, you know what's been great about being a saver? For money to bank. And that money over the past couple of years has made a pretty good yield. Pre-pandemic, money was making zero. Now it's actually making something, but that's starting to go down, down, down. I love how we can play the fact that inflation's been really high. That's a positive. But if you're a saver, you know what that means? Cha-ching. So over lining, Joe. So over lining. Afford anything.
