Summary

Kim Komando covers the IRS's top three tax scams for 2024: fake IRS texts and emails with malicious QR codes, viral tax hacks on social media that trigger audits and penalties, and ghost tax preparers who disappear with client money. The episode also features a discussion with Detective Allen about counterfeit driver's licenses being sold online and used in car fraud schemes.

Insights
  • The IRS never initiates contact via text or email—any such communication is a scam attempt
  • Social media tax hacks carry serious legal consequences including audits, penalties, and criminal charges, with taxpayers fully liable
  • Sophisticated fake ID operations operate openly on clearnet websites (not dark web) from foreign jurisdictions, making them difficult to shut down
  • Counterfeit driver's licenses are now sophisticated enough to fool dealerships and include security features like holograms
  • Ghost tax preparers exploit the fact that taxpayers remain legally responsible for their entire return even if filed by someone else

Good, what's going on? Not much. I heard of that young lady last Sunday talking about AI driver's licenses. There's websites out there that you can get on. They're not on a dark web. And you can order any driver's license that will be approved from any state you want. They'll tell you how much they cost. Some cases involving those and involving new car sales and dealerships. So these are fake IDs that you can buy. Yes, yes. And you know what, you sent me a note. I looked at, I don't want you to say the name of the website on the error, but I clicked that link and point, they look good. Oh, they were good. There's two or three of those sites. How is this? And you're not on a dark web. How is this illegal, legally online? If I started a website, heroin.com, and I was like, hey, I'll deliver heroin right to your front door, they shut me down. Well, because they were not in this country. So it's hard to shut them down. Oh, so if I'm gonna sell heroin, I need to sell it from another country. Thank you for the tip. Gosh. We're trying to do better with him. We are, we've been working with him. He is on a performance improvement plan. Just a PIP plan. How much are they? They're like 110 bucks, right? That's it? Yeah, that's it. I mean, when we were in high school trying to get a fake ID, I think I paid 50 bucks then. Yeah, but it was $50, but your picture was just duct taped to the front of someone else's license. There is that, there is that. So in your detective work, have you come across a case where it was like, wow, this was really bad? Somebody's using a fake ID? Yes, I've worked, new car sales, over the internet, where these driver's licenses were emailed or faxed to the car dealerships. Credit was approved and how the 10 dealerships, one car was actually shipped for $50,000. Oh my gosh. You know, it's, I'll tell you, when you look at these IDs, it looks like a real, it does. I mean, I don't know what it looks like when you can't get it, but I was looking online. You know, here in Arizona, we have that little hologram thing going on. It's on there? It's on there. Shut them down. I know, it's nuts. Hey detective, thanks for joining the show today. Hey, wanna stay in the tech now without wasting your time?
