This is Laugh With Me, a podcast with Jeremy Odom. I'm your host. Hey, it's J.O., and normally I want to bring just the upbeat, the level of excitement to a 10. Unfortunately, today, it's a day of mourning. Yes. On this Sunday afternoon, it is in fact a day that we will memorialize the passing of Mr. Joy on Purpose. Oh, wait. Johnny. Johnny, the applause? if this is your first episode you've listened to laugh at me you're like what is he talking about if you list the last episode you're also thinking who the hell is that here's the deal go back listen to the most previous episode jo and levetti get into the mud that's the title of the episode we had uh frequent guest levetti vegas on the show and we you know we talked talked about levetti with a lot of things. But something that was near and dear to my heart was this guy Ben Webb, a local Omaha comedian that, you know, he's got a persona that's very positive, right? Joy, Mr. Joy on purpose. But when you really look at it, it's it's actually it pretty devilish this guy it what I say the devil behind the grin This fella and it appropriate that we releasing this episode on a Sunday for him We are calling the end, the death, the burial of Mr. Joy and Purpose. But before we do that, of course, we need to eulogize him eulogize him and make sure that people recognize just exactly who and what Mr. Joy on Purpose is before he can pass on. I think that's fair. I think that's fair and that is 100% what he deserves. Well, since last episode, I'll tell you what. I haven't heard from Ben. I haven't heard from Mr. Joy and Purpose wants in regards to the comments he made to me publicly on my shows, on the Laugh With Me Facebook page. I mean, of course, the fellow will comment publicly and then I respond publicly. But then he's mad I didn't privately respond to him. Right? Yes, Johnny, that was a joke, actually. But I know he's been in people's DMs. I know he's been talking about it. Buddy, they're talking to me too. And if you think you're going to get an apology from me or you think I'm just going to drop it, you don't know me very well. You just absolutely do not. I mean, you're about to. You do now. it's time for people to see the real guy who's the man behind the smile who's the man behind that joyful grin that you see all over and then this is the real stuff who's the man behind the condescending comments that he leaves in all your posts that's who we eulogized today and we have a special performance from the pepper spray singers Johnny I know I know you're excited about that one so let's get let's get down to it today is about Mr. Joy on purpose ladies and gentlemen welcome to a very special laugh with me funeral today we gather to bury a fraud not the man no ben webb is still with us no today we bury the myth of mr joy on purpose a man so committed to joy that he felt he needed to ration it a man so dedicated to positivity that he questions it with snide condescending posts on facebook Ben didn't spread joy no he he audited it we are here to mourn the tragic untimely passing of Mr. Joy on purpose the untimely passing of a persona a brand a lie joy on purpose may he rest in mild inconvenience now for those who didn't know him Mr. Joint Purpose was a man who claimed to spread positivity, claimed to be about lifting others up Johnny, he claimed to believe there was room for everyone at the table well that is if you didn't threaten him you know, like maybe your show happened to have been nominated along his for a comedy ensemble award you know, as long as you're not a threat to him he loves you you ever notice how ben never says that's cool or great job in his comments no it's always well actually to love the craft is to make peace with embracing the grind when the time is right we pay forward all the hidden costs we have paid over the years in the form of joy Way to go comedian End quote His catchphrase isn spread love It's let me tell you how you should feel and how this goes. Ben treats shared interests like an exclusive country club. Oh, you just got into that? Oh, that's cute. Yeah, I've been into that since before it was good. Oh, you got into that festival? yeah I've been in festivals too this was the work I had to put in for it and you will too then Ben will label you and this is the worst of it make you feel as if this is what you are and only will be and that's because he said so he ends it with comedian he was Mr. Joy on flyers but backstage a whole different guy and let's talk about the name Mr. Joy on Purpose That's not a name That's a mission statement written by someone who thinks smiling is a personality Joy on Purpose sounds like a self-help seminar Hosted by a guy who corrects your grammar Mid-hug You ever get excited about something around bed and watch the light leave your eyes in real time? It's like he has a dimmer switch for other people's confidence Joy on Purpose Oh, you're proud of the work you're putting in? Boom. Here's a TED Talk. Oh, you have a life outside of the one shared interest you and him have? Oh, boom. Dissertation. Oh, you had a thought? Boom. peer review. Ben doesn't celebrate wins. He evaluates them. He doesn't clap. He nods slowly like he's approving a loan. And the wildest part about that, he'll call it constructive. Constructive for who, Ben? He could turn a birthday party into a performance review. Some people clap when you win. It's okay. Ben would lean in and whisper, That's cute, comedian. But the crowd's still laughing on the other side. Roast in peace, Mr. Joy. We're finally getting stage time in the sky. Mr. Joy on purpose. The only man who could say spread positivity in a tone that sounded like a warning. But today, no, today we lay to rest that version of him. Because once you get called out on a comedy podcast, there is no coming back from that. I believe, Ben, that's legally binding. So today we bury Mr. Joy on purpose. We lower him gently into the ground next to his unused, good for you comedian stickers. We sprinkle dirt over the velvet rope. We say goodbye to the patron saint of you probably haven't heard of it. And we welcome his new honest identity. Mr. Gatekeeper on purpose. No more false advertising. No more inspirational branding. Just a man standing proudly at the entrance of fun, checking IDs like Joy has a minimum credit score. Ben Webb. And I know you're mad about this. Good. Finally, an emotion that you don't need to fact check. Rest in peace, Mr. Joy on purpose. Long live Mr. Gatekeeper on purpose. And Ben. Dude relax Not everything in Omaha needs your approval And with that we lay to rest Mr Joy on purpose Even God's like Buddy. Let the new kid hit. Roast in peace, Mr. Joy. Raise a drink to the King of Nile. Not tonight. Gates so small. Ego so wide. But the crowd's still laughing on the other side. Roast in peace, Mr. Joy. We'll send you love and a tight find Roast in peace, Mr. Joy And then you finally gave us all the life Thank you for listening to this very special Laugh With Me funeral. Very appropriate to have been found on a Sunday. And it's all good, Ben. You don't have to take it so seriously. Sometimes we're just having fun. Sometimes some folks get together. They write some jokes down. They record it into a microphone. And they just happen to connect with people just enough that they too can be nominated right next to you. That's okay. Even if it is a podcast. Thanks for listening. in 2023. But what if we didn't get the whole story? I've just been made to fit. The moment you look at the whole picture, the case collapsed.
