Summary

Hosts Lala and Amber discuss their fitness routines and provide detailed reviews of two acclaimed streaming shows: 'Heated Rivalry,' a critically praised drama about a gay relationship, and 'Hunting Wives,' a darker thriller series. They analyze the storytelling, cinematography, and emotional impact of both shows while reflecting on themes of authenticity, vulnerability, and parental acceptance.

Insights
  • Intimate storytelling transcends sexual orientation—viewers connect with universal human experiences like vulnerability, love, and acceptance regardless of the characters' identities
  • High-quality production design (lighting, cinematography, editing) elevates intimate scenes from exploitative to artful, allowing audiences to focus on emotional connection rather than discomfort
  • Parental acceptance and creating safe spaces for children to be their authentic selves is a critical value for modern parents, influenced by media representations of family dynamics
  • Fitness consistency requires removing friction (gym proximity, low-barrier entry) rather than relying on willpower; small commitments often lead to extended sessions once momentum builds
  • Trauma responses to media are valid—dark storytelling can trigger personal experiences, making some content unwatchable despite critical acclaim

Hi Lola. Welcome to an unlikely affair. Hey babes, welcome to an unlikely affair. I am here with my sister-wife Amber. Hello gorgeous. Hi baby, how are you? I'm excellent. I worked out this morning. I told myself no more breaks and I have not, I smell, I'm actually glad you're not next to me. I'm very glad. Ethan was like, yo, you are ripe. Did you work out at home? Yeah, it's just easier that way. Have you been doing Pilates and stuff? No, I just did yin yoga on the floor like before we started recording and then I've been going to the gym. I got to get out of the house. That counts. That all counts. What's yin yoga? Yin yoga is like, I call it lazy man yoga, but it really isn't. It's basically like meditation, but you're holding poses for three to five minutes. No, that sounds legit. Oh, it's so good. When I'm there, we'll do it together. I have this guy that I follow on YouTube and I started during the pandemic and it literally just centered me. I can't, I'm not great with regular yoga because I have really weak wrist. This is like, I could just lay on the floor and watch something and sit in a pose and it really gets into the fascia of your muscles, which is the layer underneath that actually supports your skeletal system. It's amazing. It literally changed my life. I thought that's what your muscles were wrapped in. Am I misinformed? I don't know. I thought the fascia was what your muscles, I need to take an anatomy class or something. Maybe you're right. I don't know. I don't know. Google it. I don't know. I'm proud of us because I feel like I get my body to where I want it to be and then something comes up where I've got back to back like super early mornings and I'm like, okay, we'll pick back up next week. But then I look at the following week and it's like, oh, shit, I'm leaving town and I just fall off and the moment that I do that, you could work for an entire year on a slam and body and I feel like you take one week off and your body is back to looking like the Grinch and maybe that's just my experience. I'm like, I refuse. Because I think going to the gym has to be this huge production, it doesn't have to be. If I say, okay, Amber, you're going to go there, you're going to get on the treadmill for 30 minutes, you're not going to run. I tell myself you're not going to run. You're going to do a three speed at a 12 incline to really at least work the back of your legs. And then sometimes I get motivated to run if I'm listening to a good rap song. And then I go and I do like, you're like, okay, you're going to do three exercises. And I always want more because like once those endorphins start, you know, flowing through my body, I'm like, oh man, I feel good. Let's keep doing it. And I end up being there for like a full hour, which is great. Yeah, that is great. So you have to trick yourself. Well, I think the hardest part about getting to the gym is getting to the gym. That's like the hardest part of the entire workout is like getting me to start. Yeah, they say the heaviest weight at the gym is the front door. Yeah, I know. But I was talking to Jenna, who you know, she comes to the house and I was like, I think I'm in a cave. I think I am going to get the gym membership. And because right after I had Sosa, like it just seemed easiest to work out at the house. Like I knew that I would make it there because I'm just here already. So now I'm like, I think we'll be able to make it out the door into another door. Yeah, you can do it. I did the stairmaster to get that perky little ass. I know, I know. Well, there's a couple of really good gyms by your house. So you do you have no excuses? Well, speaking of perky little asses, did you end up watching a heated rivalry? Yes. The gulp, though, the gulp that you just took with the yes to follow. Tell me everything you liked you didn't like. I didn't know what the heck I was getting myself into, right? I had no idea. Oh, my God, I have so many thoughts. I don't even know where to begin. OK. At first, I was like, what is this show? Like, I don't really understand it. I wasn't expecting it. And then somehow it completely captured me and I couldn't figure out why. Like this was a show that I was like, what do what is it about this show that I love? And it wasn't about gay men. The shows to me is not about gay men. This is about men in general, right? He, the creator of the show, did such a beautiful job at. Displaying the entire arc of the human expression. And I can't. So it's like the guys were tender and passionate and masculine and hunky and they fought and they were lovers. And then all of a sudden it was like, boom, like hardcore, fuck me. And I think that that's what I want. That's what I am desiring in a partner. Someone that has all of that. Tenderness, emotional availability, but then someone that could just fuck me really hard. I know, right? Or rock my world. That's probably yeah. There I hate. I don't sense yourself for me. I would. So this show came to my front door through my friends, Nick and Joe, and they are a gay couple who I've known for a few years now. We go to Hawaii with them. And they're the ones who are like, you have to watch it. And then I started hearing about it everywhere I turned. For the most part, it was from gay men who are saying, you have to watch this. You have to watch it. And I knew like what the story was about. I don't know about you, but I get so, which is so weird because I'm like not shy about anything. And I talk about sex all the time. But I get so funny when I'm watching something, it could, whether it's two men, two women, man and woman, three sums, one sums. It doesn't matter. I start going, oh my gosh, this is intense. I don't think I can do it right now. I have to be in the mental headspace. Right. And so it took me like four days to get through the first episode because the first episode is like they're all in, right? Once I got through it. And by the way, I've had many people, even gay men say the first episode, it was really hard because I was like, what is this show really? I get through it finally. And I was like, this is one of the greatest shows I have ever watched in my life. And them tying in this, not random couple, but one of the other teammates, he goes by Scott, Scott and Kip. I think it was like episode three. And you're like, oh, this is like, who's this couple? And it shows like their love story. And it's very different from Ilya and Hollander's relationship. And I'm like, oh, this is fun. Maybe we're going to start seeing like a different, they're like integrating them in some fun way. The entire show had me in my feels the entire time. And it was interesting to talk to other people about it because gay men love it. And women love it. And actually the actor who plays Hollander said, it's funny to me that straight men talk about how they can't watch it because of the man on man aspect. This is not verbatim what he said, but when it's two women hooking up, like everyone needs to watch it. And I think that that's interesting too. Because I sometimes wonder, I'm like, what is that? Like, did it, does watching stuff like that make you uncomfortable? Not even man on man, but like just people having sex and it being that vivid right in front of you, or can you see past it to the actual story? I know I'm asking you a very dumb question because you're an actor. So of course you can see past it. I mean, I've seen, I wasn't, I was never shocked by any of the sex scenes because I've had seen. One, I've had sex, I've made two babies. And I've seen, I've seen a bunch of different types of sex throughout my career as an actor and I've experienced it. Right. I did it. I had a crazy sex scene in Ray Donovan with Lee of Shriver and I've done it in you and Aquarius and like, but I'm also someone who's very Ope, I feel really comfortable. I know this sounds weird and there's like a whole psychology thing behind it. I feel really comfortable having doing a sex scene. Sometimes more so than I do being intimate in my own personal life. And I've had to, that's like a hurdle that I've had to, you know, overcome and understand and like, pill back the layers of why. But it wasn't uncomfortable. It was and not only that, but it was shot so beautifully. It wasn't bright lights. It didn't make it like cheesy. It wasn't performative. It was like this connection and they, when they were silhouetted and the light, I just, it was done so, so well and it was so beautiful to see that, you know, people say like, oh, they felt safe. And it's like, no, like safety is actually what kept them from not connecting. Right. They had to become unsafe in order to like come together and feel this like be vulnerable and open and like say, like, I choose you and I like, I love you for who you are. I don't know. It's just the whole show. I literally probably cried three times throughout all of it. I have chills as you're talking about it. I don't know what it was about that show that it was like the characters. And when Ilya is sitting on the phone and he, you know, is upset about his family and he never wants to come back to Russia and Hollander's like, why don't you tell me how you're feeling? But in Russian, and that's like the first time that we actually hear Ilya talk about how much he loves Hollander. And I was like, this guy who's like, are you crying? I am because that was one of the scenes that I was like, I think that's what the world is yearning for. It's like, we don't need to speak the same language. There's so much shit going on, right? In all the different parts of the world, but just hearing his tone. And like he was in that tunnel and was like, I think it was like pink and they kept on going back and forth. I was like, oh my God, yes, this is it. This is it. Oh, I they're comparing that to that episode specifically to Breaking Bad, which as we know, Breaking Bad is like critically acclaimed. And they say some of those episodes are the best television that's ever been created thus far. And so they they've when I say they, I mean, people who are TV critics are saying that that is one of the tops right now. And I I felt the same way because there's not much that moves me in TV. I'm very particular. I tend to lean towards comedy or very, very dark stuff. And it just the whole thing. I want to give it the respect that it deserves because it is it is more. I tell people, you have to the the first episode, it has to be abrupt like that so that you understand how this started. Like we've all been in a situation where it starts as like, we're just fucking. And then the feelings start coming into play. And then you start understanding like what you want, who you are. So that's another level that, you know, although I consider myself an ally, I am not gay. I'm not a gay man. So I don't know what that journey looks like. But the way that they painted that picture that went from like, you know, basically just fuck buddies for one person, the bisexual man, Ilya, to just this beautiful. I mean, being caught by the dad in the final episode and him going and having to come out and it's just like, oh, my God, this is the best shit I've ever watched in my life. Well, I think what's so beautiful, at least for me about that moment is that in those scenes and in life, right, we're so used to being ready to embrace the rejection, the shame as like the audience, we're like, oh, my God, this dad is going to fucking explode and his son's supposed to be this masculine like he had this idea of who his son was supposed to be. And it doesn't. It actually like the show allows you to go, oh, that's the reaction that they want. That's the reaction that we need to have. Like. And I didn't know this going in, but the show is so healing for me. Right. It just calmed my nervous system in a way that I was not expecting like at all. I love hearing that. And especially the scene. With the mom when he comes to the mom and he says and like, she doesn't say like, how dare you not be able to, you know, like she doesn't take it on her. She, she says to him in such a kind way. And I don't know exact the exact lines, but she says, I'm sorry, I couldn't make you feel like you couldn't come to me. I know. On the on like the front steps. I know. And I was thinking for London and Riley, I always want them to be able to come to me like no matter what. And I know there's going to be some things that they're not going to want to tell me, but like I as a mom, I don't care if my kids come to me and say, mom, guess what? Like I'm gay. And I think my kids know by now, I would say, I love you. Like you don't have to be a half person. I want you to be a whole person. Don't pretend that you're a straight person out in the world and then you come home and in your room, you're you're gay or you're having these experiences or feelings like just be who you are. Right. Yeah. And that's the number one thing I think as a parent that I want to practice. I don't want to put the pressure on my kids where it's like, for example, you have to go to college. You have to do this. It's like, do we need to honor commitments? That's what we're working on right now. Ocean, you know, she started something and she's like, I don't want to do it anymore. And I'm like, we got to fulfill the commitment. And then once the commitment's over, we can reevaluate. But I just want to be that safe space where where we know that no matter what you can be your authentic self here and the pressure of the world is gone and you don't have to feel the weight of the world on your shoulders. Like at home, you can just be. You know, I'm learning that now. Yeah. Right. I'm like, what can I do? Because I feel like my mom was does not. I think we're just born with a certain mind. And even though you grow up in, you know, a home because my mom is very much like, you don't want to do that. Don't do it. Like just live life. Have fun. I worked at a dental office because I only had to work three days a week. That's her mindset. She's like, I want to enjoy life. But you we just give birth to certain minds and they go out into the world. And sometimes we have a tremendous impact on them. And sometimes we don't. There are things we don't have control over. So I think you and I are very much on the same page and watching that, I felt the exact same way. And it was I and I shouldn't compare the two at all, but it's the only other show that has like, same same sex, but it's girl on girl action with Brittany. Is it Brittany Snow? Brittany Snow. And people I could I would not stop hearing about hunting wives, like with everybody. It felt like and I have to say I could not get through it. It was so triggering for me, Amber. Why? I don't know. Watching the way that some of those the people on the show, like the guy who was running for governor and his wife and I, what's the actress's name? They had to put her in a red wig. Oh, Malin Ackerman. So, by the way, I love her. She's a great actress, but watching it and the amount of dishonesty and what they would go to to cover shit up just feels a little too familiar to me. Really? Mm hmm. Can you elaborate? Because now I kind of want that's like, you know what I'm talking about. No, you will. You just dangled the carrot, but I want to know. Can I peek inside just a little bit more so I could go? Oh, you know, just see if we have the same experience. Experiences that I have had with somebody. Mm hmm. The length that they would go to to make sure the truth was not revealed. It was triggering to me to watch that and watch Britney Snow's character be like, what the fuck? Like, I feel like I'm going insane. It took me to a place where I'm like, this feels very familiar to me. And I know what you're talking about. I get it. Like it. But like I always say, the truth always is revealed, whether it's five minutes from now, five years from now. So there's that. It drove me fucking crazy that she had hit rock bottom and killed somebody and granted she had something horrendous happen to her. Right? Like just gut wrenching what she went through with the loss of the baby and then she started drinking and spiraling. And then she was drinking and driving, gets sober. The fact that she started like drinking again and every time I would see her look at her phone and be like, yeah, I can stay a little longer and the husband's texting her. I was like, go home. Like, what are you doing? It tricked me. I didn't like it. I loved Hunting Wives. First of all, I loved it. I thought it was so it's so different than the other show. It's like Hunting Wives is is seduction and secrecy. And then he did bribery is like uplifting, uplifting and honest. I really love that. Right. It's honest. It's connection. It's it's but but Hunting Wives at first I was like, no. And the only reason why I watched it is because I'm friends with Mollin and I'm friends with Jamie Newman, who are both phenomenal actresses that I love. I don't tell them to listen to this episode. OK, well, Jamie, don't listen to this. No. There was something that really captivated me. I'm the kind of person where the pilot really needs to be off the charts. And I didn't feel that way about either one of these shows. But I stayed long enough to be drawn in and understand like from a storytelling perspective, what the writers and creator was trying to do with the show. Hunting Wives. Was so fucking hot to me. I was like, holy shit. But there were times where I was like on the edge and I felt like, you know, like you need to sleep with a woman. Do you think I'm no. I I I don't believe in labels. OK, unless you want them. Like for me, I've hooked up with chicks before. I don't consider myself to be bisexual. Someone may look at me and be like, you've been sexually attracted to women before you're bisexual. Great. Whatever. I don't believe in the label. I don't think. But if you're getting turned on, like maybe you need to have a female experience. I don't know. It wasn't that I was getting turned on. OK, it was the connection. I really value and something that I haven't had is real intimate connection. Where was there an intimate connection in Hunting Wives? I mean, first of all, when they had sex in the closet, when she kisses her for the first time when she's going to look for her gun, right? Yeah, but that's because that the redhead with the wig. Mala Neckerman. She talked about it in an interview that they tried to get her a good wig and it didn't come in time. The wigs were terrible, but I wasn't mad, though, because she was she's such a great actress. I didn't even notice what was on her head. I just saw the interview and was like, oh, you're right. The wig is funky, but like I didn't notice because she is a phenomenal actress. So much so. And same with Britney Snow that I was triggered by the show. Everyone else is like triggered. Why? I'm like, it's so dark. It's taking me back to a place I don't want to go. But I love that's like my that's my jam. I love really dark shit when it comes to storytelling, except for the pit. I've been watching the pit lately with Riley and that's more like I'm like, oh, I can't watch them like cut open the guy's leg. Right. They had a lot of I think they won like quite a few awards this season, right? I think so. Last season. They did. They did. So I turned it on for Riley and I was like, oh, this is a nice family show to watch before bedtime. Not so much. But now we're both addicted to it. But yeah, I mean, it's both of the shows are great. I'm so happy that I got through both of them. You don't need to have a female experience. Let's round that thought out. Yeah, no, it's not it's not it's not for me. And now that I'm sober, I definitely don't. I would I don't I couldn't I don't think I would need a little lube. You don't want these fingers touching you. This is what giving up the vape looks like. How's the vape going? Yeah, not good, bitch. Oh, wait, that that that. Yes, this finger, I peeled it off because I'm tweaking. But let me tell you something. Wait, one pause per second. I am really proud of you. That's a big deal. And that's a really hard thing to kick. Well, thank you. Yeah, it will get easier. The new boobs will be worth it. It is important to note. I have never hooked up with a female sober either. Hmm. Which doesn't tell me much because I even went into panic hooking up with a man sober. So I'm like, who knows? Maybe I just need to get back on all the horses. We'll see. Listen, there's never too late. It's never too late. And yes, I did find hunting wives is definitely sexy. Maybe if I watch it at a later date, there's there's obvious. They're in such different categories. I just found it interesting that so many people are I live in an L.A. bubble where everything's kind of you, you know, you've lived here. It's like, yeah, we're free and we're accepting, but the rest of the world is not lost on me, that it's not like that. And I just was like, it's so interesting that I hear about how fantastic hunting wives is. And I've heard about heated rivalry from the gay community and gay community only until, of course, I look it up. And then obviously it's getting all of this praise. But a lot of the interviews talked about how there's a lot of people who still are not not ready. And I think looking past the sexual aspect and looking at like the intimacy because we've all experienced that is the name of the game. Because even though I can't really I can't relate to a gay man, there were moments that I was like, gosh, I know that feeling of like wanting somebody so bad. Yes. And to them, it's like just sex. And then the moment that they're like, I love you. And it's like, oh, my gosh, this is the best day of my life. I know. I was like watching it. I was like, there's so much that I could take as a straight woman, like bringing into a relationship and having that intimate moment. Like I want, like I said, I want someone that's open and vulnerable. One minute it was just and by the way, like the shower scene when they're both checking each other out, these guys are freaking hot. Like I was like, damn. I know they're so good. Breaking hot. And so that also helped me. We have to wait until 2027 for a new season. But lucky for you, your hunting wives fan 2026. Yeah, baby. Oh, I'm so excited to see my girls try to finish the first season. Yeah, those sex scenes felt so real. And I felt like a fly on the wall. And again, like the way they were shot, they weren't like over the top. Oh, they were just so good. But yes, I find myself and this is a real problem. And I have to like say, Amber, stop it. Like just enjoy what you're like the story of it. Yeah. I find myself looking like, oh, that was a good camera angle. Oh, the lighting was really good. Oh, that was a good choice. Oh, look at that. You know, something in the background, like I really die far. Sometimes you you're a little too, you know, how the sausage is made a little too much. Yeah, I dissect it and I have to like pull back and go, you know, just enjoy what you're watching, enjoy the process and the storytelling of it. So yeah, your hair looks really good today. Do you have clip ins? I did, you know, I woke up this morning and I said, I want to be a mermaid. It's so long. Yeah. Well, that's what that is. Is that like your natural length? And it's the clip ins are just for fullness? No, my hair is like right, I don't know, maybe above my nipples a little bit. It looks so good. But I put them in because I wanted length today. I love it. What's on the schedule the rest of the day? Oh, it snowed, which is so rare. So I have to I have to see if I actually have to get my snow plower out. So I'm going to go out there with my extensions and my boots and plow. Plow my driveway. He gets some content. I'm going to plow that plow that driveway. That's like an inside joke. Yeah, baby. Yeah. I'm going to go get my boobs looked at because before I get my boob job, I have to do a panel of blood work and then they have to make sure I'm doing the ultrasound to make sure there's nothing in there that shouldn't be. Oh, good. OK. Well, let me know how that goes. I actually got a CO2 like started doing a CO2 facial yesterday. Do you see the spots? Oh, you ended up doing it? I did a spot treatment. I didn't do the whole thing. So she just did my dark spots. You don't even have those. Lala, we need to talk before you do shit, because I think you make things up in your brain. Well, of course, I make things up in my brain. You have the most gorgeous skin and the best jawline ever. Well, thank you. But no, I do. I do have some. And cancer runs very skin cancer runs very deep in my family. So I'm highly paranoid about sunspots. And then she did like a. The chest. She did a chest like to test it, right? Like a lot of my sun damages up by where my neck and my what is his bone called your collar bone collar. Where's your clavicle? Oh, no, I don't know. We don't even know what fasc is. Anyway, she did a test spot. I'm really happy. I want to see how it how it looks and it's the winter. Yeah, but keep the listeners updated. They love like little tips and tricks. No, I'm going to. That's why I actually took before and after pictures and I took some video while I was there. And then when I come back, then I could really peel, you know, my face off with this laser. I know it's probably an addiction. I probably have an addiction that I haven't addressed. Hey, better that than the booze, baby. Better that than the booze. I know my sister did have me pour her a glass of wine last night because she had the baby upstairs. Just smell it. I didn't like put the cup up to me. But as I was pouring it, I did smell it. And I was like, oh, fuck, this smells so good. No, I miss wine. The smell of wine is so good for me. There's a lot for me, but to me. She was a woman that goes to this deli. I'm not going to outer or the deli, but she gets. I've seen her multiple times. She sits in the same booth, orders a plate of cheese fries and drinks a martini. And I'm like, OK, that woman is living the dream. And she always has a headscarf on and wears her sunglasses. And she's so fabulous. Stop, it's going to be us. I can't wait. It's going to be us. So I'm like, Italy or somewhere. I don't want to be like at Whole Foods in Sherman Oaks. That's like not like, all right, don't be fucking rude. I go to that Whole Foods, bitch. Listen, I don't I don't I love Whole Foods. But when I'm older, if I'm going to be doing that, I want to be in Italy. We'll be on a yacht, bro. Obviously. OK, well, yeah, my yacht will be parked and I'll just be getting off the yacht to go to my favorite spot and get back on the yacht and sail away with you. Yeah. And there's no drinking problem on the yacht. It's a free roll. As long as we have our floaties on, we'll be fine. I'm just kidding. I'm not encouraging a relapse. Hey, everybody, thanks for tuning into another amazing episode of an unlikely affair and let us know your thoughts. Like I want to hear everyone's opinion on he did it right. Right. It's so funny. That word is so rivalry, rivalry versus hunting wives. Yeah, I know. English. I know one has nothing to do with the other, but I'm telling you, hunting wives was like everyone is the best show on television. I'm like, all right, everyone fucking calm down. Anyway, I love you and I love you guys. Thanks for listening. Amber, hit me up later if you're bored. All right, peace out. Peace out. Bye, guys.
