Summary

The hosts discuss the Red Sox's embarrassing 4-game losing streak and mental breakdowns on defense, including a sequence where the entire team forgot the pitch count. They also cover the Bruins' impressive home record and playoff positioning, debating whether the team is genuinely good or just getting lucky with their roster construction.

Insights
  • The Red Sox's dysfunction is systemic and organizational, not just performance-based—poor roster construction combined with lack of accountability from ownership and management
  • The Bruins are overperforming relative to their roster talent, suggesting coaching and accountability are driving success more than individual player quality
  • Mental errors and lack of focus are contagious in sports organizations; the Red Sox's collective loss of situational awareness indicates deeper cultural problems
  • Home ice advantage for the Bruins is real and measurable (28 home wins), suggesting environmental or coaching factors beyond just crowd noise
  • Playoff success depends more on five-on-five play and fundamentals than special teams, making the Bruins' strong differential since January 1st a reliable indicator

and you can pretty much do it. You're a mess. In perpetuity. Yeah. Here's Cam Smith. He has a base hit and he's also grounded out first and third two down. Runner at first goes on the swing and a miss to throw down and that'll scoot away. Here comes the runner from third and the throw home is playing it off the glove of Bayo. Well Profita will advance down to third base and another run in six to one Houston and Red Sox looking sloppy to boot but Meyer does the right thing. He tries to body this throw because he sees it in the dirt and just kind of scoots away from him and this throw home is going to be laid Bayo sees it and tries to cut it off. Goes off of his glove. It's going to be most likely an error on Wong and then we'll see where this one goes. That's sent little profita to the third. There's going to be another one there somewhere. Yeah it's almost I mean you know it's going to be a big hit and then it's going to be a big hit and then it's going to be a big hit and then Bayo obviously trying to cut it off. They know it's to him. I don't know. But I was going to home and didn't have a chance. He's a man. We're brought to you as usual by the Draft King sportsbook here on 98 five the sports of simulcast which beams across New England and the country comes to you on NBC Sports Boston that's brought you by Supercuts Real Smart Hair. Red Sox are starting moment tillies momentarily. So we thought before we got to the Bruins and some other stuff that we would just have to do. So we're going to have a little bit of a 10 minutes of a pregame show you won't be hearing on Nessun or the Red Sox radio network. How do you like your baseball team right about now? Ma'as. Not very well. There you go. Sorry. Not very well. And I'm all for the Red Sox pregame show that we want to have today and I will have further add that I've been watching the Red Sox for the large majority of my life and I say this in all sincerity with no hyper hyperbolic nature at all. That sequence last night is in the top five of most embarrassing stupid sequences in Red Sox history. Oh that is hyperbole. OK. They've had worse than that. Oh I don't know. Not when you add it all up again in the midst of chucking the ball all over the place. The fact that no one knew the account. They forgot how many strikes there were on the batter struck him out and didn't put up a fight. When the umpire got it wrong. So like it's one thing for the umpire to f it up. We've seen that before. It's happened and it's happened in games before where teams miss it. The Red Sox are so in their own heads right now. They got rattled by that defensive play and completely lost touch with what was going on in the game including the manager and the dugout. So it's amazing. I mean I didn't know this in real time. I didn't know it till I got home late at night and when I'm backtracked and looked at it and watched the video a couple times. Bayo had struck out the batter. That clown show stolen base attempt with the low throw by Wong and then the throw into the plate by Meyer that was tried to be cut off by Bayo for another error. He got two errors on that play. That was a swinging strike made it 0-2. Bayo came back and threw a swinging strike on the very next pitch for a three pitch strikeout except no one knew it. No one. No one. Not the batter. Not anyone apparently in the stadium. And if anyone on the Houston side knew it they kept quiet. But no one on the Red Sox side knew it. Not the broadcasters. Not the guys in the dugout. Not the guys on the field. No one. No one. No one. And Brian Bayo said after the game he asked for the count coming back from that stolen base and was given 1-1. They didn't show that on TV if that's a fact. I went back and watched it a couple times. So they were still doing cut aways and replays before he threw that third pitch. So I didn't see Bayo look for a clarification on the count. He said he did after the game which would imply that he did know the count but I think he's lying. He definitely asked for the count later in the at-bat. So the batter filed off a couple and it was, I don't know, like an eight or nine pitch at-bat at the end of the day. He walked him. Later in the count Bayo asked for the count. That I saw. Coming back at what should have been 0-2 but was really apparently on the scoreboard 1-1 he did not ask for it. And he struck the guy out on the next pitch and just kept going like everybody did. So that's the thing too. Like I look at that and say, it's not as if the first two strikes were called. They were swinging. So how did he not know the count independent of asking the umpire? I'm telling you because they are out to launch signature play in 2026. We go all time. Maybe that is a tears for tomorrow. But signature play for 2026. Murray, you have a thought? Yeah, I mean it starts with the manager too. I mean he's supposed to be in control of this thing and he's out to launch too. So another example from last night's horrific game. Because again, I don't just looking at them right now. I get it. So early 1-4. But how can you watch these last couple of nights and just say, ah, it'll be fine. Everything's going to be fine. Last night might have been worse than the night before. And some of that has to do with Roman Anthony who's sitting today because he's looked awful. But going back to Cora, third inning, Raffiella, challenging that play. Unless you're going against a, it was a one strike pitch in the bottom of the game. And I think that's a good thing. And I think that's a good thing to do. And I think that's a good thing to do. Because it was a, it was a one strike pitch in the top of the third inning. Top of the third inning. Nobody on. And unless you're going up against the likes of CB Buckner behind the plate, a known A-hole, you have to tell these guys right now. Listen, because they've looked like fools the way they've been using these ABS challenges. Save them for later in the game. He's checking. He has like no control of this team. And there's no, for the, for the top of the third one out. Nobody on. I believe a scoreless game at that point. Maybe it's one, nothing. One, nothing. Maybe a one, nothing game. Top of the third one out. Nobody on. He's your number nine hitter. And I'll get one further, Murray. The batter before got rung up on the exact same pitch. The umpire last night was on the plate. He was good. Yeah. He was fine. But the app app before. Got to remember who it was. But whoever hit before, it might have been Wong. Whoever was right before traveled home. Perhaps when I traveled home, I traveled home without going home. Perhaps when I traveled home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without going home without the game. You know, they're not going to be able to fight for the win. They're not going to be able to fight for the win with these challenges right now. So if you want to get better for a scuffling, struggling team right now, you have to use the more strategically. There was no strategy there. It's like he has no control in terms of that aspect of the game right now. No, they all feel like they're out to lunch and just quickly on Roman Anthony. So. He might suck to now. No, no, no, no, I know. But just right now in a vacuum. I mean, he's sitting for a reason today, and it's not just the at bats. Did you see the first one? Oh yeah, three strikes right down the pipeline. Maybe swing at the end of the line. I mean, he's not going to be able to get the ball. He's just jarring to watch. But what was his arm this bad last year in terms of his defense? I don't remember it, Marie. It's a good question. The throw last night was a little bit better, but not much. So bottom of the third inning when it's about to be a two one game. No, but still one nothing game, Houston, but it starts to get broken open the play the plate. I mean, it bounced in like four times just like it did the other day. I don't remember his arm being this bad. It he throws this ball. He's just a little bit different. I mean, we had a real game show we did on E. E. I. That was totally honked out. They called the real pregame. Oh, yeah, the real stew, right? It was the real postgame show. Yeah, yeah. Welcome to the real Red Sox pregame show here on 98 five. The sports that might be a copyright infringement. But you know, with the spirit with which I'm saying it, unlike Pete Shepherd, this has a little bit of a different tone. Dexter in the car. Welcome to the real Red Sox pregame show. Go ahead, Dexter. Dexter. Thank you. It might just throw through the crowd. I mean, I'm not sure what it's going to be. But. You know, I'm not sure what it's going to be. But. Two ball team this year, five and six year old girls. I can promise you they will not make a play. Singular is embarrassing is what the Red Sox did last night. The entire failure of this team is systemic. The owner probably doesn't know the season starts. The GM wants to manage. From a spreadsheet and the coach cannot be bothered to have this team ready to play in the last, you know, eight years. You ever see someone trying to cut off the throw from second base? No, never not once not a million. I've seen from the home home home home home home home home home home home home home home home home home home home home the same play and everybody forgot the count at the place. Like that is just that is an epidemic of stupidity. Ryan and Waltham. Welcome to the real pregame show. Go ahead. Hey, uh, I'm calling in talk about like the 20 25 record. If you look at it, like they're far and away better at home than away. Um and if they continue that this year and play good at home, it looks like it's going to be around the same. We're going to be I think they're the same team as last year. I think they're the same team as last year. They might be worse. They're worse. Yeah, I mean, they're playing worse. I think the quality of the roster is exactly the same. If not a little worse, Craig Breslow did not improve the team. And so I know they're not ready to go to start the year. They're all out to lunch. They don't know the pitch count. But without break and that's on the manager, but I still do start with the roster. The roster isn't any better. Yes, Murray without Bregman, not just the back of the leadership because he was almost like a de facto manager for the first time. I mean, I'm not sure if he's going to be able to do that. Yeah, Look, I even I also think now you're starting to see some of the problems with the intangibles. Like you know, for a whole team to lose focus like that. A whole team. Every one of them. They all lost focus. They miss breakman's sort of mental approach. They miss ref Snyder's leadership. There's nobody in the dugout to say, guys, what the hell are you doing? Travis in the truck. Welcome to the real pregame show. Go ahead, please. Yeah, I'm just going to say that was the very next pitch after that horrible challenge. He takes one right down Broadway doesn't swing at it. Couple of balls later on, and then he takes another one right down the middle for strike three, saying they're like a statue. Oh, and one one out top of the third in a one nothing game on a pitch that's on the plate. You freak out on a pitch if he was paying attention that the umpire with that was in the exact same location the pitch was in the same location. He was paying attention. He was paying attention. He was paying attention. Exactly here. Exact same location. And Michael, tell you what not to like even if he wasn't paying attention. Third inning one zip. What are you doing? It should never even get that far. So that's obviously on Raphael, but it's also on Cora, where it's a it's definitely on Cora. It's guys. We're not. It's just a game. It's a game. It's a game. It's a game. It's a game. You know, no challenge or if you challenge it and lose your find. And I don't care if that's a CBA violation. That's between you and me. Your bench whatever. So on some level that is on Alex core Bob and some of welcome to the real P. Game pregame show. Go ahead, please. Yeah, how you doing? I've been watching, man's thoughts for over 50 years. This is beyond embarrassing. And do you know what I mean? I mean, I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. So that's the exact same as it was last year. 47 times in the last four games since opening day. They've struck out 47 times. The exact same thing. Yep, pretty much. And listen, the mistake that Raphael made. We're talking about mental mistakes here. The challenge thing. Mental mistake thrown to the plate, cutting it off. Mental mistake. This team has made mental mistakes for about five years. They're dumb. Can you tell me what you're doing? I'm glad to be part of it, because as I said, we keep it real. They say, what do they say? Do the flow downhill? Here's my thing. I've been it's from the ownership. This is the this is the real question. I'm asked, man. I've been a fan since bill Buckville. What in ball go through his legs? This is so I'm so disgusted. I don't know. This is what I want to know. How do you fix it? Like the owner has no interest. You know, I don't know. I don't know. Maybe this is tears, but I've seen more dysfunction. I don't think this is. Historically bad. But it's not any better than last year. And I don't think they're done for the year. There's enough talent where I do think it will straighten out and averages and all of that. They call my averages for a reason, and I don't think they're done done. But I do think the early part of the year you can see that they're done. And the roster is not any better. I don't know if they're coaching it or instructing it any better because they're still striking out and they still suck in the field. Nothing has changed in terms of how they're starting the year, which is out to lunch, which they've done now. They've had only one winning record in their first 20. We're fishing around for the stat yesterday. I saw it online. Someone posted it was since 2018, Mas. They've had only one winning record over the last 20 years. They've had only one losing record at or below 500 in seven of the eight years since 2018 tells you a lot. Okay, so that's all the same. They're not ready to go to start the year. They're still swinging out of their ass. They're still not playing well in the field, and then you just step back from even how they're playing. The roster is not any better. So whether this is historically bad or just not as good as last year, I'm more worried about that second piece. Yeah, so look to be this bad a little bit. I'm not sure what they're saying. But the talent on this team is better than you know, 250 winning percentage or 200 winning percentage, which is what it is over the first five games. Okay? They're not a 200 baseball team. We can all agree on that. But the fact of the matter is if they want to be one of these teams that can overcome an absence of offense, well, then they have to be smart. They have to be situational and they got to be fundamentally sound, and I don't think there any of those things. Perhaps there's going to be a couple different possibilities. Perhaps there'll be a couple different possibilities. Perhaps there'll be a couple different possibilities. Perhaps there'll be a couple different possibilities. football with good reason if you want to weigh in on these bumps in Houston by how means you're still welcome to but we'll get to that right after these words Belgium has continued on the sports hub. Posternak gets into Elias Wynholm coming down the right side he scores! Ripped it inside the left post and the Bruins just 13 seconds into the period have a 3-2 lead. The second time he's done it in a week it's been scoring all week so that didn't just start last night the last time home was woken up offensively over the last week but that just that sequencer as the Bruins beat another good team last night at home in a relatively convincing fashion the the the end of the second period they're given a power play and the power play is just pull your hair out atrocious overpassing overpassing overpassing passing up shots refusing to shoot the puck trying to make some delicate little seam pass that every single one got broken up nothing nothing nothing and then they come out in the third the tail end of that period I'm sorry the tail end of the power play and they run this do you see the play that they ran yes and that was a designed play where they sort of like post up Posternak just outside the blue line and the defenseman asperow I think hit Posternak he immediately behind the back to a streaking linhom it was a play it was like a must say okay that's the way they're gonna play that's what we got that's what we got with the Boston Bruins so I have a question I have one very pertinent question and we'll get some help on this as we sometimes do on hockey we call them the magpies because they will not shut up which is why I have my finger on the button that they start chirping and grab-assing I just cut them right off couple of cackling crows DJ bean Pete Blackburn of the what chaos podcast join us now I'll start with you DJ and I'll ask a very simple question are the Bruins good or yes are they just playing good there's a difference are they good they are good they are playing well they are lucky they've taken turns getting luck in different places feels like four different answers I'll let's try it again are they a good hockey team yeah not really so good good answer you're right you're right I go ahead define that no like I said I get there's a lot of qualifiers there there's the are they getting a lot are they getting good goaltending are they getting all these things like yes there are a lot of variables there but ultimately they're a good team where we've been careful we talked about them today like we refuse or I'll speak for myself I refuse to put expectations on this team I think this is such a huge house money year that we're starting to see the tide turn really over the last week where they're getting a lot of national attention and people being like damn these guys are going to be trouble I don't know if they're gonna be trouble I think they're good though and I think that they're a playoff team and this has been a great season I'm going to stop short of putting big big expectations on them though yeah I know you want I know you want a black and white answer that the real answer here is that there they can be a very good hockey team capable of beating any team in the league on any given night it's just the inconsistency is what's going to kill them and what has killed them at different points of the season even going back to that Columbus bluejackets win where they played I think arguably their worst period of the season and then followed it up with 40 great minutes a race to three nothing lead and won that game like right now they're playing largely great hockey okay but are they a good team and I I think they're playing really well and it's great and I'm all in too but I just skating in their top six and I'm not just saying like in their lineup I'm talking in their top six is Marat Hustadinoff and Casey Middlestatt and Victor Arvidson and guys like that nevermind Fraser Minton who's a good young player and I like I so I'll sort of leave him off that list but if I'd said to you going into the year that could nest off Middlestatt and Arvidson wouldn't just be in your lineup they'd be in your top six and on your top two power plays what would you tell me about the team that you had not very good that's up that is at best a middle of the pack team why you shaking your head DJ am I wrong because when that line was you know I did that was the day that we decided the Boston Bruins were the coolest team in the world the most hilarious line in the world is Pavel Zaka between Casey Middlestatt and Victor Arvidson it's a line where each player is supposed to be the worst player on a line we thought it was so funny that they played together not only is that working but they're like one of the best five on five lines and hockey again goes back to the there's something lucky there's something fortunate about all this which is why I'm gonna stop short of saying alright here's what I expect them to do but yes that's a line of three players that should be the worst player on like a third line and instead they're a second line that rocks go figure it's a deeply unimpressive team on paper but they are well coached and there's no dead dead weight in the lineup and if you are dead weight in the lineup you get yanked out and I think that's the accountability applied to this roster is what has helped them punch above their weight class even guys like Morgan geeky who hasn't scored in 17 games like has been a very very valuable defensive player recently and was pushed down to the third line and is serving a role like there are so many guys in this lineup right now who are not necessarily producing Frazier-Mitten as four points over his last 20 games like still a very useful player there's no dead weight in this lineup that's why they're finding success and I'll also say that you are kind of leaving out you're gonna make a face at this but that there's a 40 goals score as your third line center so God you really you really think that home is a 40 goals score that's what you would call him I'm you could call him a lot of things he scored 40 goals okay you know what so wait a minute if you do it once that's what you are would you average out what is average goals per year isn't say that's the kind of score he is unless you have him on your show and you're just trying to kiss his ass it's that thing probably right no I mean yes if we had him on the show then yes we would kiss his ass we don't have bruins on the show anymore because the Bruins hate us yeah the Bruins don't like I would hate you your bunch of Bruins your bunch of bootlickers why would they hate you because we were too mean to Don Sweeney really yeah yes yeah oh well he's such a plus when it comes to this it was actually Pete it was actually Pete that pissed off Don Sweeney which is crazy because when I covered the Bruins my full-time job was getting in arguments with Don Sweeney and I quite like Don Sweeney personally as a result I like people who fight with me I'd say the same thing about Cam who I like but he's such a sally those guys cannot take anything there's such thin-skinned little pusses oh no they really are when it comes to this stuff I may or may not have joked that John Don Sweeney should be shot after last year's trade-at-line which is a little extreme extreme very poorly he deserved it that's a little extreme little strong yeah hand up it was a meme it wasn't serious it was the shoot that guy me I apologize for you guys seriously saying that they can win a round or even two dare I see that's why I say I'm not doing expectations chat on these guys I think that it is fun that they're making the playoffs but if they I mean let's go through the teams that they might play Buffalo I think no one's beaten Buffalo in the first I think I mean I think I basically won one round I think Buffalo is winning the first round Canadians give me that that'd be fun as hell two high-scoring teams and I like Boston's goaltending better but I'm not I'm not putting expectations on them to do anything I think that's so fun DJ no but but I'm with them it's it's how can you predict the future but I mean so I do wonder why is Buffalo winning the first round because dude they are just they have something right now that is this ineffable momentum it's crazy they I think that but they also haven't been there so I'm not gonna time in 15 years yeah I'm not gonna say that the Bruins can't beat Buffalo I'm not gonna say that Bruins can't beat anybody because again they can be a really good team capable of beating anybody on any given night and if they string together a good couple weeks they can win a series against anyone I think I also wonder is that it's the bottom's gonna fall out at some point with the bottom's gonna fall out at some point you can only go so far and I don't want to throw cold water on it and I'm not because I'm in for the ride and I'm not a guy that said well they're not gonna win anything anyway I do my best not to be that guy but I'm also keeping it real Victor Arvidson Casey Middlestatt Marat Hustadinoff in your top six never mind Hampus Linn home who I think is below average never mind Mason Lorai who I like but it's kind of an accident way to happen skating around in your top two pairs how like you like me so long I do is an absolute why do you like me like we don't like Mason Lorai shut up Mason Lorai like why do you like Mason Lorai I like his potential I think he moves a puck well for a guy his size and it's only gonna get better I think Mason Lorai is what people who don't watch Evan Bouchard think Evan Bouchard is which is like some offensive no one knows who Evan Bouchard is in our audience no one knows sure he's like the Mike in the north here put them on hold put them on hold for that I don't like is Bouchard still with Edmonton Kevin okay I don't like talking about Western Conference hockey and I guarantee you that the balance of our audience has no idea who Evan Bouchard is they might know who Pete Bouchard is the weatherman channel yeah you know that guy is you know Pete Bouchard right yeah nice guy do you know who Evan Bouchard is no you don't know so take your Western Conference hockey and keep it on the podcast okay now Jimmy you may pod them back up here they come you know the guy you still talking here you put them out I've never seen a better talking no I've never seen a better demonstration of the cackling crows than this it's unbelievable Tony in the background they're constantly yak it's just a constant chirp chirp chirp chirp chirp so it's just all stopped now for a second and they're still moving their lips they are they're still moving their lips and talking so here just stop for some what were we just talking because we were a little distracted do the Red Sox have one or two errors so I think it's two I believe it's two but it's mounting the Red Sox are booting the ball all over the field in Houston in this first inning it's kind of hysterical but on the hockey oh you're only gonna go so far with Arvidson Middlestatt who's knees stuff they hate Lowry fine who's to Dean of who's to Dean off I've in the last 24 hours I for I can't pronounce the name who's to Dean off I don't like I don't like the way Hampus Linnom is playing you know Mason Lowry if you think he's playing Red Sox how far you can pot them back up now Pete I'll start with you how far can that go I think you can win you around if you're very lucky I don't think it wins you two rounds that's sort of how I feel but I'll tell you what I'll take that and if they can push in the second round before they get bounced like if you know if they can get to six games in the second series I think that's a win don't you guys think that when you look at them right now that and I recognize that a lot of it at this stage is about how hard you're playing you know the Bruins play hard they do they try pretty much every night but don't you think that you know they collectively they are better than the individual talent they do play well together yes this is not a super impressive roster although there's also we haven't talked about the James Hagan's element of it which is that you can insert this guy and then maybe that's an interesting line if you have him with Lent Holman geeky who could maybe get going again but I agree with what Pete just said and like part of refusing to put expectations on them is refusing to expect them to lose in the first round I think that a lot of the teams they play you like you will get a good series I don't the one thing I'll guarantee is I don't think they're getting swept in the first round so what it depends if they draw Carol Lent oh swept okay swept fine but I think they're going to be underdogs against anyone in the first round and I'm with you Buffalo's better they're having a better year and yeah they haven't won in 20 years and so that's like one of the things that you got going for you your goal tending as well and you've got some guys on this team that have won and gone deep Buffalo has nobody well no I mean I don't say they have nobody but you know the franchise 20 years without doing anything so like you sort of like that on paper but they're better than you and so is my true why is everyone so willing to say yeah give us my trial aren't they the hottest team in the league right now I would I would have more confidence that the Bruins get waxed by Montreal than almost any other team in in the conference I just think that's a massive mismatch and the Bruins cannot skate with Montreal and they cannot score with Montreal yeah I'm not overlooking Montreal either I think they might be I don't know if they could score with Montreal but I think that that would be a high scoring series and Jacob Dohmann has been great the last like week or so but Montreal's had issues in net so if you did the breakdown of like forwards who you take obviously Montreal's defenseman who do you take obviously the high-end guys you take Montreal's but I think that Boston's maybe you feel good about some of the depth there in goal tending I take Jeremy Swamin in the playoffs I would expect Montreal to beat Boston but I want to see what that series looks like okay quickly what is your thought on the Hagan situation what should they do what will they do I I think they call them up because you're almost guaranteed to make the playoffs I think that the uncertainty of whether or not you were going to make it what made sense to stash him in Providence to at least guarantee him as much hockey as possible now that you know that you're going to be playing postseason hockey here you should have a player who is going to be part of your future a key part of your future and getting him the experience with the big club and playoff experience right off the bat I think is too valuable to pass up everywhere to that thanks guys for coming on we appreciate it as always love you later boys okay fellas DJ Bean Pete Blackburn I would bring Hagan's up to I like the idea we talked about this with Tatum right like get him in at the end of the game and get him to the minimum so that next year you're ready to go I would say the same thing with Hagan's to me I'm okay with only if he's ready you know and I I don't know I don't know how he is he's put up a couple points down there in Providence he can shoot the puck so if he's ready he's ready and I don't mean like you know he's in his NHL prime I mean obviously he's going to be the young kid but is he ready to be a young kid in an NHL lineup in the playoffs and just to say I did it you know what I mean like I think there's a lot of people just put him in there what if he's not what if he's looks like Fabian Lysel you don't just do it to do it because it makes you feel good because you drafted himself and overall and you can insert him and like I know that's fun like I get it that's fun it's exciting to think about that but don't do it just because of that the kids got to be ready to do it I feel like he's already shown more than Fabian Lysel and I'm not kidding I'll tell you two or three games alright we'll take your calls right if a big Jim Murray gets you up to it Weee goalie fight Weee look at the goalie fight Oh my god Murray he sucks in the playoff That's great no 98-5 Wonderful good The sports hub Nick and Paul River lose off on the B's what do you got Nick? I said Nick you're up hello Okay Nick you can call us back how about Billy and Rhode Island on the socks go ahead Billy Hey Felgood do you guys hear me? Yes sir Oh yeah on my take on the red socks well I know they're like they like to say all their pictures are aces and but the third base they could assign you junior Suarez which makes me think that them and a bunch of teams like the Yankees are in the tank because of the Dodgers and my take is nobody wants to spend because they nobody thinks they go up against the Dodgers The red socks don't want to spend because they want to make money and they're managing their club like a portfolio it has nothing to do with the Dodgers nothing no again it's all about avoiding risk because they're running it like holding in a portfolio as any asset manager would a portfolio manager would that's why they're doing that it has nothing to do with the Yankees or the Dodgers or any of that Dan in Canton on the red socks hi Dan Well anyone is still making excuses for these A-holes is is beyond me but but watching but I'm sorry I missed the free game show but watching them has exactly made me any calmer the most offensive thing about them running this team like the Milwaukee Brewers or an NAL Central team is that they're not even good at it they're not even good at finding the cheap guys to plug in for you know some more expensive like Devers or or Bregman and then when you trade Devers the guy that you got for him Tibbs I think James Tibbs or whatever his name is you know you get him from San Francisco you then flip him to the Dodgers for Dusty Freakin May and now this kid is out there hitting 500 with three homers in triple A you know who knows what he's gonna be but if you're gonna run your team like a small market franchise you have to at least be good at at being the Tampa Bay Rays bingo they're trying to run it like a small mid-market operation and they're not good enough to do it no they kind of suck at it actually I mean why seriously why beat around the bush they suck at it they they again that whole sequence it on the the guy's subject line it said the prospect they acquired and traded for Dustin May okay they got James Tibbs from the Giants they then flipped them to the Dodgers for Dustin May Tibbs with the Dodgers is now hitting over 600 in another home run last night Dodgers triple A triple A yes I'm sorry Dodgers triple A the Oklahoma City Comets and the other guy that the Dodgers got in that trade is hitting over 500 for the same team so now look it's early in the air I get it okay but the fact of the matter is it feels like the Red Sox don't know what they're doing in fact they're butchering it not only they not only know what not know what they're doing they're butchering it on every level here's Rusty in Chicago on the hockey hi Rusty Michael I've heard the collars all week say two things that actually proves your point they say Swabians been playing out of his mind and he's worth the money well the reason that it he's not totally worth the contract is because the contract is for when he's playing out of his mind and that's only about two-thirds of the time so it's like if you know what I'm saying it it's a self-repeating argument about all this and he's been so hot and he's playing great there's no doubt about it you're not paying him for a month or two of hot play you're you're playing my point consistently one of the yeah consistently one of the best goalies in the league and he hasn't been he's been one other point here good really quick it's just I know like like his metrics and all these things they say is really great he's the worst goalie in the league at low blocker saves that's a data point that's confirmed and the other point is the way the brood's going right now this formula they've like three second lines like that kind of formula three second lines in a real plumber fourth line and it's just kind of working like they're playing the right way at the right time of year they're frisky I don't expect much of them um yeah they're fun watch and they're playing the right way and all those things you said are true but there's another weird hole in Swamons game shots from distance which we found out from the Italian red line that was not a outlier he has oddly ranks low on shots from distance really I don't know if he's got a he's near sighted or why I don't know what no that would make sense or whatever but he has a problem with shots from distance can't see past the blue line but he's so your your your gold tenders playing terrific you're winning with a backup now too I mean you've beaten two of the best teams in hockey with with what's his face with corpus allo so you're winning with the other guy you do quote-unquote play the right way the fringe guys that you wouldn't expect much of are playing above their skis and it's great I'm nothing bad to say about it it's just let's see let's see how far you can go with who's to Dean off and Arvidson and middle stat on your top six and on your power place let's see how far you can go with that look legitimate question but let me ask you this and you probably would have been watching either way are you more interested to see the first round of the playoffs yeah definitely so am I and you know what given the way the year started and what I expected that's a win for that absolutely listen I think they've done a good job for what was truly a gap year I mean not a fake you know the selling thing but for the Bruins it truly was I mean they went into the year thinking didn't Ty Anderson's tell us that's a couple weeks ago like they wanted badly going to the year that be able to deal Zaka and deal middle stat and deal Arvidson and deal these guys and do what they did last year and that was the plan and then they got to the deadline during the playoffs and so they held on to them and now they're even better so it's like they weren't expecting this either so they might have caught a break in the long term like now you might be able to trade some of those guys in the off season so I don't know what their contracts are but you know I would say who's to Dean off and Arvidson for sure are not you know foundational pieces middle stat I'm not telling you I've fully come around on middle stat but he's still young he was up I think the fifth overall draft picker something like that he's like a really high first round pick at one point and maybe he's just a late bloomer because I I haven't hated his game which for me is like high price yeah no that is I think you really like a guy like he's actually last night he did a fly by the cost you your second goals I might tell you he's perfect the two goals they gave up last night I thought we're soft ass stuff behind their own net soft ass play down really soft but where the defenseman and forward Zaka on the first one on the second one middle stat just did your classic fly by the guy came right out in front and scored so both of those I thought were really soft play down low so middle stats not like completely won me over but he makes more or said made made more little good plays and I gave him credit for he's better than he was a year ago a year ago he was atrocious so I thought he sucked last year so it's been it's been worthwhile and so who cares how far you think they can go sit back and watch it we'll see what let's see what happens on that one long commercial resection comes away next Sean Lawrence go Sean he keeps saying like I didn't actually watch the game mothers Patriots topics Bruins whatever like isn't your job is talk show host actually watch sports so I would say my job is to get you to listen that is the job mission accomplished take this job show 95 the sports hub well point six left before the Bruins can officially put a cap on this one their twenty eight home victory of the season good with I don't think Dallas is at their best but that's a good way you know just frustrated them the way that they checked them they didn't give them much they gave Dallas three shots in the third period no team in the league is one more on home ice than the Boston Bruins have this season as they spill off the bench to celebrate a six to three win over the Dallas Stars here at TD garden tonight as email or Nick writes in they have the eighth best record in the NHL total again number one at home that's interesting unreal right I've always thought them to be a pretty mediocre home team at the guard at this guard at the new garden I remember we had the Thursday night wet fart game I mean you could set a watch to it thirty years old but the anyway the new guard I I I don't know if it's that much of a home ice advantage in terms the crowd although I feel like the crowd the last couple games has been up has been a really good crowd it just feels that way through the TV to me but I don't know if they've been like a good home team I always like a little better on the road where they can play like the quote unquote road period you know what I mean but anyway best record in the NHL home eighth best overall in points they have the second best record in the NHL since January 1st they're the best five on five goal differential in the NHL since January 1st that's usually a good metric great metric absolutely because in the postseason it's largely five on five play the exactly right special team stuff sort of mitigates and it's just sort of a tell on what kind of team that you are it's the essence of hockey right five on five uh and Toronto by the way looks to be in perfect position for you seventh last it's so again you get at Toronto's first round pick top five protected after the lottery so their odds to get into the top five from the number seven position are pretty low because they can only get one two or three so like that's all sort of coming up ruins which is great I take none of that away I just do think the talent on the roster is the talent on the roster and there's got to be a ceiling on that you would think but I don't want to be Debbie Downer see how far it takes them Nick and Fall River are you there hey guys what's up sorry about the last call uh so I didn't really have much to go into other than to say that uh you had a bouchard comment it goes up my butt kind of like the one with uh getting rid of three on three overtime hockey I don't know where your premise comes from there we're not all just a bunch of dummies I admit a lot of us are dummies probably the majority of us are dummies but I know who he is I know who Matthias at home is I know who the main guys aren't Edmonton no I don't know what everything is that they did last year but it's basic knowledge for normal hockey fans to know come on get out of here with that I disagree with you I guarantee you half of our audience less than half of our audience knows who Evan Bouchard is less than half for sure categorically less than half know who Evan Bouchard is I'm sorry good offensive minded defenseman and Edmonton he wasn't on team Canada for the Olympics was he like that sort of a yeah he's not that I remember I don't think so Kevin me was on team Canada was he no so no I it's my number one issue with the magpies no Western conference hockey the 98.5 percent of our audience does not give a crap well right and look the guy said I never mind about it they don't give a crap about anything other than the Bruins but go ahead no and I'm paraphrasing but he said something the fact of you know the hardcore hockey fan knows who that guy is and I would say yes the hardcore hockey family what percentage of the population you think that is I'll say all 17 of you John in the car go ahead John you know like I'm gonna take full credit for Henry Jokey Harrier's goal last night I woke him up questioning his existence along with Linholm but my question was more telling to the Red Sox when they signed Sonny Gray they told us that if St. Louis caught the ball on a regular basis is he already would have been 3.43 or something like that meaning that if you catch the ball behind him you're gonna get better performance from Sonny Gray and the Red Sox who have the worst defense in the history of the Western Hemisphere baseball wise are supposed to improve this guy I don't see it as usual yeah no no what they should have said is well look he had a 4.80 era with bad defense so with us it'll be 5.8 that's what they should that's the way they should have looked at it the mistakes they made early in this game today holy crap Sonny Gray is only here because the Cardinals took on his salary just use your head he's not here and they can try and explain this way however they want to do it that he's got his balls in play his bad bit the defense behind it's a lie it's a lie he's here because the Cardinals took on his salary if they didn't take on his salary he wouldn't be here no matter what his FIP or BABIP or whatever was right totally so 100% stuff it with that here's a Liam in New Hampshire go ahead Liam what's up guys Mike I gotta disagree on your take about overpaying goalies Swamans playing like the best goalie in the league right now Liam I'm gonna please don't go anywhere I just want to stop you right here right now we ran these numbers since he signed his contract of the 24 qualifying goalies meaning every day or you know regular starters I don't say every day no one plays every day of the regular starters since he signed his contract he ranks 18th in safe percentage since he signed his contract so yes he's playing like that guy now he has not played like that guy over the balance of the contract sorry okay I can understand that getting to my second point I think posture needs to be more selfish with the puck he was passing it way too much below the circles yesterday and it was infuriating to watch Liam that that power play they had at the end of the second period did you see that of course yeah infuriating atrocious and posture knocks the prime culprit but they were all doing it all all of them passed up clear shots for seam passes that Dallas was just waiting it was like Dallas was giving you the shot like out of your's got that we're gonna play the seam they sort of baited the Bruins into these seam passes as soon as the Bruins try to go across the seam they got to stick on it and cleared it from the zone and then immediately to start the third period on the tail end of that power play Lindholm just comes into the zone and shoots and scores oh oh you mean you have to shoot to score oh really interesting thought on that one well especially given the talent level on your team the last thing they should do is get too cute just get it on net and see what happens feed the chickens as they said just put it on that you all crash the net and that's what you do hack and whack yeah like the goal the first goal they scored last night right was a loose back up hoisted enough slapped at it yes and went through out in just pads okay continue to take your Red Sox calls continue to take your Bruins calls do some football though got Barthie standing by all right yeah you know I like having guests on as that we can yell at yes you know it's a yeah that's right we need punching bags the magpie is perfect because they're not here and that we just mute them and then beat them and with Barth we can shut off his mom just yell at him just bring him in we start yelling at Barth who's got some Patriots thoughts for you and some draft talk coming your way as well right after big Jermory gets updated 90 seconds no commercials
