Summary

Miller and Moulton's fourth hour covers NFL offseason moves including the Miami Dolphins' draft strategy with five picks in the first 90, Sean Payton handing play-calling duties to Davis Webb with the Saints, and the Atlanta Falcons releasing Kirk Cousins. The show also discusses NHL playoff implications and celebrates notable historical events and birthdays.

Insights
  • Miami Dolphins must convert at least 4 of their 6 picks in the first 111 selections into starting-caliber players to justify the new GM hire and rebuild strategy
  • Trading down from pick 11 only makes sense if no elite prospect falls; passing on a great player for two good ones is a losing proposition in roster building
  • Sean Payton relinquishing play-calling authority signals a significant shift in coaching philosophy and suggests confidence in Davis Webb's offensive capabilities
  • Joe Shane's insistence on maintaining GM authority while John Harbaugh controls roster decisions indicates organizational dysfunction and likely short tenure
  • Atlanta's Kirk Cousins release despite uncertainty about Desmond Penix's readiness creates a QB vacuum and potential opportunity for teams seeking veteran backup/bridge options

you're listening to miller and molten coming at you from the floor meister studios floor meisters keeping it real and now here's mark miller and david molten it is the diamond district bonus hour fourth and final hour of miller and molten on this hump day the final one of february thanks for being with us miller and molten miller and molten.com miller underscore molten on x if you missed chris perkins and seth everett last hour well in not too long you can go to miller and molten.com and download what you missed we've talked a little hockey today we've talked a little golf today had a good dolphins conversation with chris perkins and really trying to try to gear down on what he said of they've got to make the playoffs in three years david says they need to have a winning record in three years i it's splitting hairs a little bit but i know where you're at that means a nine and eight season it means they're going in the right direction because nine and eight doesn't get you in every year get you in sometimes but not every year right and ten and seven has even in this 17 game season like the seahawks last season not this one that they won the Super Bowl in, but last season missed the playoffs in the NFC at 10-7. But clearly they were going in the right direction. And just to clarify, the reason why I'm willing to change, have to make the playoffs to have to have a winning season, I think they're actually going to go backwards this year. So it's not three years where they start to go forward from this point. on i actually think they're going to go largely backwards this year so they're starting from behind i agree with that i will say they have five picks in the first 90 picks uh-huh this draft is critical to the success of this regime yeah i mean this is five guys that david if i said you got four starters i mean isn't three starters to me is the bare minimum and i'm not talking this year. I'm talking in three years. But I think you've got to find a way to get four starters minimum out of these top, the first five picks they have. Three in the first round, 75, 87, and 90, along with their first and second round picks. Mark, if things were to go ideally for the Dolphins, they'd turn these five picks into what Brad Holmes did in Detroit when he started the rebuild and actually they were like a year or so into it and then he had that monster draft you know where he went gibbs he went the tight end he went the linebacker the wide receiver and he nailed they had five early picks and now he traded down to get an extra pick he had the Then I think he traded down to 12 and took Gibbs, and everybody went, whoa, what are you doing? All right, and he nailed all five, and the Dolphins need a draft like that, and quite frankly, that's why this guy got hired. I mean, they didn't trust Chris Greer to handle the draft, and his track record proved they shouldn't have. He was not good at it. And this is why this guy was hired. So he better nail it. I mean, in theory, maybe he'll have one other year where he drafts his high. I like the fact he's already talking about trading down. He goes, call me. I'm interested. Make me a good offer. where are the dolphins 12 11 okay 11 43 and then the three third round picks and even their fourth even their fourth round pick is 111 i mean you know that's that's six picks in the first 111 picks and i'm with you if they end up only drafting four guys out of that 111 because they made moves to go get who it is they wanted. You've got to be right. But to me, this is four starters that have got to come out of this for Miami. Yes, absolutely. And that's why, I mean, you tell me, if you could get a mid-third-round pick, would you move down six, eight spots if you're Miami? honestly david i'd have to answer that when my picks up because one of the mocks that i saw too could be available to mark my end me at 11 considering it i'm taking all those calls now like we always talk with pat i know what my options are when that pick comes but if they think there's a guy at 11. I need you to stop only because the first half of that you're digitized and we didn't get it. So I think you said something about you've seen some mocks where certain guys were on the board. Right. The top of the top two corners, and I can tell I'm spitting around right now again, but they said the second best corner of the draft could be there at 11. If that's someone that they think is that valuable, then I'm taking all those calls like that Pat Kerwin always talks about you've got the deals laid out on the table but if a certain player is there that i think's the guy that i want i don't move but david i'm taking every call right now and i'm ready to make that move should the guy i want not be there i'll tell you what though he better be worth it because in theory you're trading down and you're passing on the starter and i don't just mean you however far you're trading down 18 19 21 but what you get in return in theory with all the holes they have mark i mean they look at their defense he's probably looking at that board going yeah only three or four of these guys are going to be here in 27 so if you can you know you can go from one you know really good but you can get too good and you're miami that's got to be a tough call because you could you don't have a ton of good players you know is it the object to get as many good ones as possible if you can get two one very good versus too good no i take the too good i i know where you're coming from and again what i said was if you have a guy that you think that highly of at 11 right you know if a player starts falling that you really want now i don't think bane's there at 11 but you know what i mean because there's been talking about bane with his height and things like that all of a sudden something happens where a guy that was projected to be in the top five seven sitting there at 11 do you take it right and by the way you can get a great player at 11 we could rattle off 15 examples off the top of our head i'll just give you one recently you know the bucks got worse at 14 you know i mean so it's not just potentially i'm passing on a very good player for two good players you could be passing on a great player at 11 for just two good ones so yeah it's a hard call i agree with you mark i mean if you're convinced i'm passing on a great player you don't pass on great players you pass maybe on a very good player but you don't pass on great players and i'm just as high on you know yeah the dolphins could trade out of 11 but i've got three third round picks can i go up into the back end of the second round and get someone that i think's really good i know you need lots of guys but you know there's also the side of this if you draft four or five guys that are all starters you know what happens they all become free agents at the same time and you can't keep them all so do you are there moves that you make to get someone better well if you trade down in the first round you're probably acquiring a day two draft pick for the move that gives you maybe a fourth third round pick and so you certainly could use two of them to move back into the second round and get a guy that you're like oh we can't pass this guy I can't believe you're still on the board. We got to get them. Yep. And the other side of that is, David, if I'm trading down out of that pick, this is where I might be. Look, and I know I'm not going to be good. This is where I might consider, can I get a second in 27 as opposed to a third in 26 if you know what I mean Uh So this is you know Miami has a lot of picks this is going to be a big test for the new general manager for a guy who said at his opening press conference quote i love draft picks unquote and mark you froze it up on us so miller molten millermolton.com miller underscore molten on X. The Dolphins, one of many teams yesterday who gave kind of a state of the state address as to their football team, but there was some news that came out of those state of state addresses. All right. One of the biggest ones I think is Sean Payton's handing over play calling to new offensive coordinator, Davis Webb, who was the quarterback coach last year. And they kept them and they kept them by making them OC. Well, it turns out they kept them by not just making him OC because other teams wanted him as OC, but they were willing to give him play calling. Turns out Sean Payton's given up play calling. I don't think Sean Payton's ever not called the plays. In New Orleans, earlier in Denver. So this is a huge move. I mean, we all joke that with Sean's ego, how many games does it take for him to take it back? but and i will say sean payton when he was offensive coordinator of the giants in the late 90s early 2000s had play calling taken away from him by jim fossil during a season and i believe it was the season in which they went to the super bowl So he's been a part of it. That is for sure. The Lions are going to Munich. For those that are into that sort of thing, their opponent has yet to be revealed. And the Falcons let everybody know. We're releasing Kirk Cousins two weeks from today, March 11th, the first day of the new NFL season. We're cutting them loose. I'm surprised. I am for this reason. You publicly say that you're not 100% sold that Penix is the guy, and you also say you're not 100% sold that Penix is going to be ready for week one. Well, then what are you doing at that position? are the Falcons going to be a surprise Malik Willis candidate I mean you know Kirk Cousins went five and two last year filling in at the end of the year he was six and three the year before that before he got hurt and you're like nope we're done now Pat Kerwin on this show said he He thinks there's a possibility they're cutting him and they're going to resign him for something more favorable for them. That's not how Kirk does business. Check it out. Ever before. So I think that was a very, that's a very interesting storyline. Complete new GM and president in Atlanta. are they going to get somebody to challenge or supplant Penix? Because remember, they had nothing to do with him. Welcome back to Miller and Moulton. Text the guys what's in your mind at 21000. That's 21000. And now, here's David Moulton. And so the Commanders are also playing a game in London. And weren't they involved in the Madrid game? Wasn't it Washington and Miami? It was. It was because that game looked really good on paper before the season started and Miami imploded and Daniels gets hurt. Washington had the same thing go on, basically. So, yeah. So the Commanders, I guess they're saying it's the first time in 10 years. They will have played in London. So the Jags will play two of their, quote, home games, not in Orlando. But although actually, is this the year they play their games in Jacksonville, but before like only half the stadium? I think that's correct. I thought you would know that better than I, but I'm pretty sure that that's the case. And then it's next year, right, that they're going to have to move venue. Right. And then they're back home by 28. Yeah. So next year, two of their Jacksonville games, which would have been before about 35,000, 40,000 max, instead will be in London. And the commanders also will have a home game in London. Their opponents yet to be revealed. By the way, the NFL doing this when their schedule reveal is not until mid-May. No one does it better. Nope. they really don't nope find a way to get talked about right a bunch of gm spoke yesterday more will speak today with a combine beginning uh you know we'll get a good get good gauge you know i mean like for instance uh mendoza's not throwing so you know you're not going to get anything there a couple of the other quarterbacks are like simpson's going to throw i think he has to i I don't think he has any choice. Well, that's the biggest surprise, right, of the first round. Is he going to get taken late in the first round? Is somebody going to decide, you know what, can't wait to the second round. I think he'll get taken. Too many teams at the top of the second round don't need a quarterback. I'm going to take Ty Simpson late first round. Let me ask you this. If you're the Rams, would you? No. No. Because first off, I'll tell you right now. Okay. I'm sorry. I'll clarify that. If I think he's a franchise quarterback, absolutely, I'd take him at 29 or 30. Absolutely, I would. It'd be 29, by the way. Yeah. Remember, the Rams have two first-round picks because they have Atlantis. So they can plug a need for a team that's right there to win a Super Bowl and draft Stafford's replacement. So I stand corrected. Yes, I would if I'm the Rams take him at 29. That to me is the spot. I mean, really and truly, that's the team and the spot. But I don't think he's a franchise quarterback. Well, and of course, it only takes one, but there you go. Now, to me, what that does is that says if you're somebody out there who's thinking early second round for him, don't you have to maybe think I got to deal with somebody above 20 or below 29? You know, like the Giants moved back into the first round with New Orleans at 25, I believe, and gave him a third round pick to get the rights to dart. by the way speaking of the Giants Joe Shane their GM spoke yesterday I got a kick out of that David and I know you know you're I know you're a Giants guy I know you pay attention but basically he kind of threw the I'm still in charge thing out he tried I'm still the guy responsible for this football team and its operations right and now I give Harbaugh a bunch of credit Harbaugh played nice which I think he's done throughout this you know it's basically Donald Ponte and it's me and Joe Shane, and we're all in this together. We're working together to do the right thing for this team. But for Shane to sit there with a straight face, David, and say, I'm in charge here. Okay, good for you, buddy. I hope you think that because you ain't. I can't believe I'm doing this. This will be the second time in a week on this show that I bring up the movie Kicking and Screaming. The first was after the passing of Robert Duvall. but there was if you saw the movie at all and i'm guessing if you had kids of a certain age you did see the movie it was a it was one of those really good kids movies that was so enjoyable adults enjoyed watching it also right david did not watch this movie with his kids and still loved the hell out of it right okay but there is a scene in kicking and screaming between now the late robert Duvall, okay, or no, I'm sorry, Will Ferrell and the late Mike Ditka, in which technically I think Ferrell is the coach and Ditka is the assistant of the soccer team. And Ferrell is telling Ditka, your services are no longer required. And he refers to him as juice box boy. Listen here juice box boy Okay And Ditka starts screaming back I no juice box boy Okay Very funny scene And it kind of what I was thinking of yesterday when I saw the clip of Joe Shane And all I could think of was, I'm no juice box boy. I am not a juice box boy. And I don't know. seems a lot like a juice box boy to me he really does david he really does so so yeah i i just that was that was of of all of the pressers i thought of you yesterday in reading that going why do you even say that there are certain times that word choice is everything. I've been really hard on Nathan McKinnon. There's a hundred things he could have said differently as opposed to you be the judge who the better team was. Particularly when basically he missed the game-winning goal and was checked off the puck when the game-winning goal was scored. I mean, if there's one guy to blame for Canada, it's him. It truly is. Yeah, absolutely. He answers that question with a little more grace. he's not taking grief from dum-dums like me. Joe Shane yesterday could have answered that a million different ways. He could have just said, we've got a great team here, love working with Harbaugh, Donna Ponte brings a lot to the table, and we are working together to make this team better. Okay, fine. You answered what the truth is, and we all know the truth to be. Instead, you looked into a microphone, into cameras, and you lied to all of us. And if you believe the lie, you're George Costanza. Well done, sir. Right. Our roles are clearly defined. Everybody here knows what their job is. All right. Trust me. I'm doing my job. I'm doing it with the 100% backing of ownership, John Harbaugh. Okay. And Donna Ponte and I are just getting to know one another. And I've always been a big fan of hers. Okay. blah blah blah right but i'm still in charge of this team i'm the director of football operations does anybody believe that so i over over under joe shane is still with the giants a year from today because i am doubling down on no way oh no way no way no way david no he was given a one year parachute go call all your people line up your next gig okay you've been replaced by donna ponte okay you know harbaugh doesn't want you he's in charge right that's the end of the story that's just the way that it works you know right we we let harbaugh have the roster therefore you're not needed anymore right miller and molten the good the bad and the ugly today was the day when and what's on tap it's how we finish things up during the diamond district bonus hour and now here's mark miller and david malton 22 minutes till we're done on this hump day i have to begin with an apology in 40 years of broadcasting i've never done this before i've never said anybody is past who is still very much alive but you know for whatever reason i don't know who i got them confused with or what have you but i said that coach ditka is no longer with us he's 86 years old and living in chicago so my my apologies there don't know if i was thinking about robert duvall in the movie don't know if i was thinking about butkus got him confused well and there were some rumors about him being in hospice a couple of years ago and and things like that so i get it i get it and i i looked it up and i wanted to make sure we had the discussion off air i'm like i I think you missed one, but usually it's me during this very segment where I celebrate someone's birthday who had died seven to eight years ago. I can honestly say in 40 years talking into a microphone, first time I've ever done that. I'm embarrassed, but I'm also very sorry to somebody who was very good to us over the years on this show when he was spending a lot of time in Naples. it's that time again nearing the end but not quite there yet here's mark miller with today was the day when we start in 1836 this guy named samuel colt that is the first revolving cylinder multi-shot revolver you know the colt 45 today in 1862 the first legal tender act is passed by Congress authorizing the United States note greenback into circulation, the first paper money that is legal tender in our country. Today in 1870, Hiram Revels is sworn in as the first African-American member of Congress, senator from Mississippi. First televised ice hockey game was today in 1940, David. Rangers defeat Le Habitant 6-2 at the Garden. W2XBS broadcasts to more than 300 receivers in New York City. Yep. Yep. NBC. 1950. The show of shows premieres on NBC. Sid Caesar, Mel Brooks, Neil Simon, and Woody Allen. Neil Simon, the star, but the writers had Brooks, Simon, and Woody Allen. They wouldn't do anything after that. No. The Beatles released their first U.S. single, Please Please Me, today in 63. Muhammad Ali as Cassius Clay wins his first heavyweight boxing title when Sonny Liston fails to come out for the seventh round at the Convention Hall in Miami Beach. Yep. Yep. First famous thing that happened there. The second famous thing was, I don't know if it was 68 or 72, but Nixon accepted the nomination for president in the same convention hall. Day after Cassius Clay became heavyweight champion, the next day, he said, my name is Muhammad Ali. Today in 72, pretty lopsided trade, David. The Cardinals send this guy to Philadelphia for Rick Wise. His name was Steve Carlton. Right. Yeah. And Rick Wise was a fine pitcher. But he wasn't Steve Carlton. But he was not lefty. 81, the Grammys. Christopher Cross wins record of the year for sailing. Yep. It was a huge upset. Let me give you the songs that were also nominated. Lady, performed by Kenny Rogers. In 81, Kenny Rogers was a big flipping deal. By the way, Lionel Richie wrote that song. The Rose by Bette Midler, also monster movie and hit. Streisand's Woman in Love and the theme from New York, New York, performed by Frank Sinatra. Right. And Christopher Cross won the Grammy. Apparently, as the story goes, Streisand was pissed. She thought it was hers. and was not very nice to Christopher Cross because of it. Imagine that. Today in 87, the NCAA gives SMU the death penalty. The fact that it took them this long before they were back, I mean, it crushed the program. Yeah, June Jones in like what, 2009, 2010, something like that, he took them to a bowl game. They won a bowl game. They hadn't done that since the death penalty, but you're right. I mean, you know, they played for the ACC championship two years ago, made the playoff. Yes. Right. Right. And it was today in 91 that Bruce McNall, Wayne Gretzky, and John Candy bought the CFL's Toronto Argonauts. Hey, man, they were a thing. They had Flutie, a quarterback. They had Rocket. Okay. Those games were on ESPN. CFL games were. I mean, we were watching. and we paid a little bit of attention. Bobby Riggs, golfer Tony Lima, Billy Packer, Ron Santo, George Harrison, and Davey Allison would have all celebrated birthdays today. Oh, wow. What a list. Yeah. I just did it because I like saying the name. Sally Jesse Raphael is 91 today. Ric Flair, 77. James Brown from CBS and the NFL today is 75. David's favorite football coach, Jeff Fisher, is 68. So was Kurt Rambis. Just had a lot of eight and eight seasons. That's all. Come on. If you listened to this show for a while we all know your opinions as Jeff Fisher as a football coach And what so funny is nine minutes after I had my Jeff Fisher you know how many lives can this guy have off of eight and eight blah blah blah Jeff Fisher was on our show like the next week. He's been on the show every single time we've called him. He lives in SoCal. He comes on the show at 530 his time. Todd Blackledge is 65. Paul O'Neill, 63. Carrot Top. Remember him? He's 61. Hideki Matsuyama is 34. Fred Van Dleet is 32. And Bo Nix is 26 years old today. What did I miss, David? Nothing. Not yet. The two I wanted to mention, SMU and Ali. Time to see life a little bit differently. Here's Mark Miller with the good, the bad, and the ugly. What do you got, Mark? A sad story that is an unbelievable, heroic effort by people you would not think of. A two-year-old girl who was allegedly abducted from her home is now safe because of a moving crew and a gas station security guard. A security guard working at a Phoenix area quick trip recognized the suspect and the girl after getting an Amber Alert the day before. He jumped into action and enlisted the help of Camelback moving team that was at the gas station after noticing the toddler and the suspect. Together, the crews spotted the suspect's vehicle and boxed her in while a security guard called 911. Police came. They were able to get the girl. Everyone was safe. the president of Camelback Moving said, we're a moving company. We are not professional heroes by any means. But to listen to the dash cam and watch the dash cam footage of the crew identifying the situation and who this was and putting the plan together that we're going to block this truck in with our truck and not allow them to leave, I couldn't be more proud. Amazing. For the fact we go to Alabama, where we have a situation. An Alabama family are trying to get an unwanted squatter to leave their property. It's a 100-pound pot-bellied pig. The pig has taken up residence in their yard on January the 16th and will not leave. They've tried to chase it away. The only way they can get rid of it is to kill it, and they don't want to do that. The owner of the home says he doesn't want to harm the pig, and local animal control say they can't do anything about the pig until the owner is identified. They're hoping that the owner will come forward, but at this moment, the owner says his rent's due and he needs to go. Finally, the ugly. We've got some garbage in Ohio. An individual who fled a traffic stop was caught hiding in a garbage can. Happened earlier this week. after he was pulled over, he took off on foot, and the officer briefly lost sight of the person. A garbage can, a garbage collector opened a trash can to find the suspect, who police have now dubbed Oscar the Grouch. And that is the good, the bad, and the ugly on today, February the 25th, and it's brought to you by the Cape Coral Police Department, hiring new officers, great base pay, overtime, and bonuses for being hired. Other jobs also available. For that information, you go to capecops.com. That's CapeCops.com. Six games in the association tonight. It's a pretty good ESPN doubleheader, thank you very much. OKC at Detroit. It's only the two teams with the two best records in the league. 7.30 on the four-letter network. And then 10 o'clock tonight, Celtics and Nuggets in Denver. That's a good double dip right there. it is college college hoop only one system played tonight in seven games and that's florida six and a half point favorites at texas seven o'clock on espn2 remember they just did something no team has done at least since they've gone to 64 plus teams in the field florida's won their The last four conference games by 19 or more points. Can they cover six and a half in Austin against a Texas team that's bubblicious? Big game tonight on the NBC Sports Network. Is that what they're calling the – Yes. They gave it the exact same name as the old – Yeah, they really went all out on that. I mean, they worked harder on that than we did Miller and Moulton. um st john's at uconn tonight seven o'clock on the nbc cable sports channel and we got so back in action tonight the nhl gets going tonight finally 7 30 the leafs and the lightning big one for both obviously there was no team playing better hockey than tampa bay before the olympic break and if toronto wants to make the playoffs they got to start beating the teams in front of them tampa's in front of them i think they're six points out of a playoff spot i believe right now exactly right david yeah boston the islanders have the last two spots with 69 and there's toronto who's played as many games as them they're six points back so it need to come out of the gates hot and you're doing it against the team and that nobody was hotter than entering the break than the Lightning. Five wins in a row for the Lightning heading into this one. Eight of their last ten. Now Columbus had one seven in a row, but I'm going the Lightning over the month have lost like two games. They were amazing. Colorado at Utah late night game tonight that actually Utah is trying to fight for a playoff spot and Colorado kind of sputtered before the Olympic break. As good as they were through the first 50 for 45 the last 10 or 15 games. They've just been average. Yeah, the West is interesting where the last four teams are separated by a point. Utah, Edmonton, Seattle, and Anaheim. Now, you know, you get three points clear at L.A., four at Nashville, but, yeah, the final four are a cluster in the West. and there's really you know those teams would all be six points behind boston who has the last spot in the east that just shows you the difference between the two conferences and colorado clearly still has the best record in the league it's not close they're four points ahead of the wild but they've played three last games so colorado's still clearly the best team but over the last 10 or so games they've played okay hockey and it will be interesting to see how much juice you know the two have stars have tonight because they were on that canadian team in fact they were both on the ice when the game-winning goal was scored you know mccarr and mckinnon it is amazing that canada gave up the game-winning goal with mcdavid mccarr and mckinnon on the ice yeah they're only arguably the three best players in the world right i mean they're they're they're three of the top 10 for sure and and i think a lot of people would go three of the top five i mean my goodness i i would say three of the top three i don't know who you're putting in there honestly gail mccarr is the best defenseman in the game it is to me it's not close no one skates like he does mcdavid's the best player in the game and i think mckinnon's next i really do you know maybe dry sidle would break it up uh also i'm not as high on mccarr defensively he's clearly the best offensive defenseman not even close but car was on ice for both goals uh mccarr defensively i don't think is an elite defenseman i think he's a good defenseman solid but i don't think he's he wins the norris every year i understand that because he's paul coffee only with a righty shot offensively i mean he's far in a way the best offensive goalie in the league or defenseman Not even close. And Kucherov's there. But I'd take those. I'd take McKinnon before I'd take Kucherov. I would. And I love Kucherov. Although I'll say this. We've got to start banging the table for Kucherov for MVP. Enough already. Enough with McDavid. Enough with McKinnon. Okay. Come on. Nobody thought the Lightning were going to be this good this year. Nobody. He deserves it. Miller and Moulton. We'll be back tomorrow. Thanks for listening.
