Summary
Matt Jones discusses Kentucky basketball's recruiting struggles after top portal targets Tyron Stokes and Rob Wright failed to commit during campus visits. Despite offering competitive or superior NIL packages, the program is facing questions about coaching staff's ability to close deals and connect with players, with the fanbase expressing frustration over missed opportunities.
Insights
- Silent communication strategies backfire in recruiting—lack of transparency from coaching staff allows rumors and speculation to fill the void, damaging perception
- NIL money alone is insufficient to close elite recruits; intangible factors like coaching relationships and player fit are increasingly determinative in portal era
- Coaching staff relatability and connection with younger players may be a structural weakness; Mark Pope's intensity and formality could create distance with Gen Z athletes
- BYU's ability to retain and attract high-level talent despite being a non-traditional basketball powerhouse suggests faith-based institutional loyalty and culture outweigh financial offers
- Rapid portal depletion creates urgency—top 100 uncommitted players dropped from 95 to 50 in 24 hours, compressing recruiting windows and reducing backup options
Trends
NIL as equalizer: Mid-tier programs (DePaul, BYU) using NIL to poach talent from blue bloods by offering higher individual compensationPortal recruiting volatility: 18-19 year old decision-making overnight reversals becoming norm; traditional recruiting timelines obsoleteCoaching staff generational disconnect: Programs with older, formal coaching staffs struggling to build rapport with Gen Z athletes vs. younger, relatable coachesInternational roster filling: Elite programs may need to supplement domestic portal misses with overseas talent, creating roster composition uncertaintyInstitutional culture as recruiting asset: Faith-based schools (BYU) and programs with strong identity (Louisville) outperforming traditional powerhouses on culture fitTransparency as competitive advantage: Programs that communicate proactively about recruiting outcomes avoid narrative vacuum filled by speculationTop-tier talent concentration: Massive gap between top 10 portal players and 11-75 range; elite programs must land one of few true centerpieces or accept significant drop-off

Ryan Lemon is here with me. Shannon is in Louisville. And Ryan, the excitement we had yesterday, I guess you could say tempered a little bit this morning, as neither we have yet to hear from Tyron Stokes, or Rob Wright and both guys came and left without a commitment and Kentucky fans were a roller coaster of emotions yesterday. I mean, just like, if you were online a lot during yesterday, you saw the agony and ecstasy of humanity. It was like the old wide world of sports video where the guy was tumbling down the hill on the ski lift. That was kind of how it was. You know, you said on Monday, this is like the old school refresh day, refresh, refresh, refresh. It's definitely a refresh day. After refreshing all day Monday, all day Tuesday, I'm like, come on, man, I just like got smacked in the, punched in the stomach a little bit with no news, no good news, I should say. So let's just, for people who aren't online all the time, here's the update. No one has committed yet. Kentucky has zero commitments in the class beyond the guys that are returning from last year. Stokes right after the show. Well, the Stokes saga feels like it was a week ago, but it actually was yesterday. Yeah. I said he got taken to the airport. I didn't say a reader on the text machine said he got taken to the airport in a blue Kia. Right. People got very angry at that. Very angry. Very angry. And then a random, the random guy, Trillie Donovan said, no, he's still there. And he was, and so everybody got mad at me. And for two hours, people were like, ready to send me to the, you know, send me to the gallows. And then it turns out the Trillie Donovan guy was wrong and he had left this morning and he had left on the exact flight that that guy said he was on. Now, whether he was in a blue Kia, in my mind, he's always going to be in a blue Kia, but we will, I guess never know if he was in a blue Kia or not, but he did not commit and Kentucky decided to wait. They're going to wait on him even though it's not clear what his thought process is. Bummer. Not a shock. Do you wait on him if you're Kentucky? Like I said yesterday, I think the fact that he's the number one recruit in the country, you need this to kind of reemphasize we are Kentucky. I think you wait on him. I just think he's, I think you have to wait on him, but like it's going to be tough. Now I've been told that there is a lot of money for Tyron Stokes, but it is like just for him. So they've built their roster on this idea of a, an amount of money. So let's just say theoretically they've said we want to spend $15 million on a roster. Okay. They have slotted for a guy and Tyron Stokes' position. Let's say it's 2 million. I don't know what the amount is, but let's just say it's 2 million. They were willing to, if Tyron Stokes is six, go four over for that position. But if he doesn't come, that four is gone. So it'll just be the two. Does that make sense? Yes. So I think, I actually think Tyron Stokes' money is kind of allocated to him. So he, it won't have a huge effect if he doesn't come. They'll just go get a $2 million guy instead of it. Where I do think it matters is the longer he goes, the quality of guys that you could get to replace him goes down by the day. Oh, yes. I mean, two days ago, there were only five of the top 100 players were committed. Now it's like 50. Right. So like the amount of people was going down by the minute quickly. And you got to get a team. Louisville just got their third guy. They're about to get their fourth guy. And, and like we have no guys and we don't have a lot of guys returning. So that's mine. Just a sheer numbers thing is nerve wracking. But the bigger negative is Rob right. So here's the situation. Kentucky, we couldn't really say this yesterday because we don't, you don't want to jinx things because if we had said it, I think I already know I'd be getting played for this. But it's true. They thought yesterday was a formality. Like bringing him here. There was a whole set of things planned. You know, you heard Jeff Goodman say unless they screwed up, he's coming. The idea was he would this was going to happen here yesterday. And it didn't. They just didn't. And he decided he needed more time. I think maybe UK said, look, we got to know in by the end of the day, Wednesday. So we're going to, I think, I think we're going to find out today unless, you know, these things change quickly. But I don't think there's any way to spend. It is very disappointing. It's a top five dude in the portal. This is a guy who can be the centerpiece of your team. Right. Right. He can be your Otega away. And I don't know how many others of those people are out there. All right. I think he was Stokes obviously is, but he in the portal in terms of guys, Kentucky's recruiting, he was like the one and they were going to get him. And then I don't know. I don't know what happened. He basically, I think they said we need the night and they went home and now we'll see what happens. Travis Branham of 24 seven sports apparently just put out an update that says he believes he's going to be the centerpiece of your team. He's leaning by you now. I will say to you, I don't, there's a lot of people that are using some of this as a public leverage play, but I will say this. I don't feel great about it. Hopefully it flips. It flipped yesterday. Yesterday, everyone, including me, thought he was coming. It was like, all right, what time is our celebration? Didn't happen. We've learned these 18, 19, 20 year old kids changed their mind overnight a lot of times. So I kind of thought I might wake up this morning like, Hey, he, he committed before he left town. The money for the money for him is essentially the same at Kentucky and B way. Kentucky is probably slightly more, but it's in the ballpark of the second. And so the Kentucky fan is thinking he's using us as leverage to get more money. The second thing is wrong about that. Kentucky gave a final offer. Kentucky's offer is high. He just might decide not to take it. Yeah. And by the way, that's not a good sign. If a kid does, what's less to play at BYU. Kentucky, right? Like this is Kentucky. And I wish I could say to you, like, here's what I'd like to be able to say. Cause part of what I want like to do, cause I think people go so far crazy online that part of what I would like to do is kind of quell the uprising. But what's hard for me is, and you've heard me talk about this for a while. None of us know what UK is doing. We, none of us know. I talked to pretty much everybody yesterday that does this locally, including people that don't work for us. Nobody knows. I talked to national people who know what every school is doing and they don't know. Nobody knows. So I'd like to be able to come on here and go, don't worry. Maybe it's like Baghdad, Bob, everything's going to be fine. But I have no idea what their plan is. I just know that part of the plan initially included that guy coming here yesterday and it didn't happen. They've always known Stokes was like 50% shot or less. But this one was like 90%. And now we'll see. Is it 50 now? Is it 20? I mean, I don't know because I don't know the kid, but that's where we are. So the fan base obviously. The fan base is freaking out. And in my opinion, they're freaking out a little bit too much, but some freaking out, I think is okay. Part of me is going, how do we make sure we're good? If you want to go to a Final Four, you need one of these two dudes to come in. Or you need Zoom D'Alo and a bunch of other really good dudes. And that could still happen. But the window for that is closing rapidly in my opinion. Yeah, because there was so much excitement going into going into this week that we're going to maybe get maybe get both of these guys zoomed. So they are committed. This is the one thing I do know they are committed. We've got to have Rob right or zoom D'Alo. I am under the understanding that it's like one of those has to be done by the time we go to bed tonight. So if we go to bed tonight and we have neither or we start to hear zoom D'Alo's taking visits to other school, then I'm really gonna work. Yeah, I think Rob right is a step up from zoom D'Alo. But I think zoom D'Alo is still really good. So he's like one A and one B. No, I think it's a one and a two. Okay, but I think the two is okay if you can get a lot of other good guys. But when you look at the board, the lot of other good guys, they can get them, but they're going to have to like run what do you call in cards, they're going to have to run have a perfect draw. Like everything else is going to have to work. And some of the dudes they're looking at, you know, McGoon Guoth decided to go to DePaul yesterday. That's a perfect example though of where DePaul is going to pay him like their best player. We were going to pay him like we was his fourth best player and he's going to go take the money to be the best. Right. McGoon Guoth going to DePaul is a perfect example of how NIL in some way levels the playing field because it allows a team like DePaul to pay a dude as a first. DePaul may still end up stinking, but they can take that player. So I think the another thing that narrative I've seen online is that if Kentucky misses out on some of these big name guys, they're going to overpay just to fill the roster with other guys. I think that'll probably happen. And then I think what happens is, is there could be a period where all of a sudden, like we don't even know our team for a while and we get all guys from overseas. I do think that's, I do think that's a possibility. Because like I was told, so like, so I was talking to a national guy and it's not, it's actually one of the kind of secondary national people. And they were like, look, there's, there are not enough players from some schools that need players. So they were like, who's Arkansas going to get next year? Right. They were like, Arkansas has no, they have the kid from Georgia. And then like if Thomas goes to the draft, they were like, who's going to be on their team? The national media is like, who is Kentucky going to have? Arizona needs players like big time programs need players. And they're like, some of these, there's not enough players. They're going to have to go overseas to fill the roster. And they said there's some value in that because there's those people are, those guys are cheaper. But regardless, I don't want Kentucky to get to the point that like we're going to have to look at film of a grease point, a Greek point guard, you know, grainy and go, I guess that's our guy. You know, Illinois kind of did that the last couple of years. They did. And it worked. It worked for them. But, you know, I don't know. We've brought in what? Yellow Vitch and Big Z. Yeah. It was like the seventh man at Illinois. Yeah. So, so I don't, I mean, so where do you stand today? You have to be bummed. I'm bummed. Like they had it. They had it yesterday. And it didn't happen. Now maybe it still happens. Maybe he commits today. I'm not, I'm not giving up. Because if he commits today, then who cares if it was a day like it, right? But they had it yesterday. They had a whole game playing of stuff. And then didn't happen. Maybe he wanted, there's the optimist view. Maybe you wanted to just go home and just, you know, just tell mom and grandma before he told everybody else. I don't, I think that view is, that view is not a real view. You know, and, and, and part of it is like from, from a P.O. standpoint again, you know, you get everybody's hopes up. Yes. Yeah. The fall as good as it was the day that they put the banners up and all that stuff. If everybody does that, you know, it has to work. You can't strike out. You can't strike out. The Stokes thing, I think our fans understand we're, we're rolling the dice there. Come on in, Phels. You can just sit down. You're rolling the dice there, but the right thing was, I mean, remember Jeff Goodman said, unless they screw it up, he's come. So is, is Donnie Freeman here today? Yes, he came. He came. That's another thing like, you know, they, people put out yesterday, Donnie Freeman was skipping his visit. That wasn't true either. And he's here. So he is here. He's here. And Kentucky can, could get him. Yes. They might get him today. I don't know. But at this point, here's what I will say. It's disappointing to me about UK's recruiting right now is pretty much if you look across the board, when a player gets connected to a school, that school locks it up. Just look around. Every time we've seen player connected to a school, they lock it up. We just can't seem to lock it up. And why? And there's, I think there's a lot of reasonable questions as to why in this case, you know, I've had criticism. I've had criticisms of JMI and I still may and I still do occasionally. But in this case, the money is there and they still not. So, so at least in Rob Wright's case, you can't blame the structural anything. It's there. Kentucky is offering more money than BYU and he might still go back to BYU. And this is BYU. Shannon, who I mean, no offense. If you, if you, if you were, if you were part of that faith, I understand it. Or if you're from you, this kid has no connection to that state. If you lose to like Duke or North Carolina, you know, Kansas, whatever, but BYU, that's concerning. Yeah. Con Chandler, I get it. Cause that's his home and he's Mormon, but like this kid has no connection to BYU. And this isn't just the one off thing last year, you know, with Yaxel and Wilkerson and Demary. But I think with those guys. Yeah. No, you're right. You're right. So I am, I'm bummed. I mean, I'm not ready to jump off the cliff yet. I think it is important. Let, let it play out. But I was really confident. Like Monday night, I drove by those kids house that had the banner and I waved and I was really confident. I was like, we're going to be doing a show here Thursday. Even if we don't get stoked, we're going to probably have at least Freeman and, and, and right. We'll do a show here Thursday and it'll be a party. And then last night I was like, man, 48 hours. I have a different view. You can, like you said, you can see it on social media the way our fan base just got bummed. The longer the day went on, the more depressing it got to be on social media. And the toxic parts of the fan base, they, this feeds them because like, yes, it's, it will, we'll see how it ends up. But it was a, it was a poor 24 hours. We'll take a break. 859-280-2287. Give us a call. There could be news that comes during these two hours. The other thing is, man, people in Chevy Chase decided they wanted to talk to me yesterday. Did you get more replies about Chevy Chase or about recruiting? Honestly, on Twitter, it was, it was all a Twitter and KS boards basketball, but on the text machine, you would have think, somebody put that in a Chevy Chase Facebook group. They may have. They may have. We'll take a break and be right back. What's up, baby? It's Bredsky and I'm here to tell you that spinquest.com. Spinquest.com is giving out free sweet coins. One person writes, Matt, at some point we have to say that this staff just can't close and maybe have difficulties interacting with players. I don't know, but I can understand why people would guess that. I've said this many times, you're going to hear me say it until I'm blue in the face. I know it wears people out because they'll go, Matt, you're just saying that because they won't talk to you. It's just the truth. PR 101, don't be silent. When you're silent, the void is filled by rumor. Go look at what happened. We may talk about it later with Diana Rossini and Mike Vrable. Right? Those pictures came out. And I don't know what the truth is on that, but nobody said a word for a week and the story just got bigger and bigger and bigger. And now eventually she's had to resign. She finally made a statement. Vrable keeps pushing off his press conferences, but at some point he's going to do one and guess what's going to happen. He's going to get asked about it. Absolutely. And so like by not doing anything initially, I think they thought it would just go away. It never goes away. Right? You've got it. You have to dress stuff head on by them being silent in UK, like not talking to the press. Then people, the worst beliefs, people can, they gain oxygen. So yesterday they were like random screenshot of text chats coming on, of people saying things. And I don't even know if the people that they claimed were saying them were saying them, but they take on a life of their own because there's no information to counter it. Yes. And that's terrible PR. So is it, is it Mark Pope can't relate to guys? I don't know. But I need another explanation. If it's not, and nobody gives one. The original question about the staff, we do have some new faces on the staff this year. Yeah, we have Mario has a Mario spy right now. Look at him. He has a Mario spy right now. Freeman is with Pope Mo Williams, Malachi and Cam. At Lexington location, which we will not say. So, so that's happening right now, which makes me feel like a public. Okay, like not, not in a room. Yeah, makes me feel makes you feel what good? I mean, they were in public locations with the other guys too. I like Carson's. We got to stop taking people. We're on a Z. We're on an offer street right now on Carson's as good as the food is. I think that's where you take my mom and Larry. I don't know that that's what you're running today. Take him to Keeneland. I don't think that's been working either. One person writes, Matt, how do you think we will have a point guard at the end of today? Yes, I do. I think if I think if Rob right doesn't give him an answer, I think zoomed the alo zoomed the alo will come here. And if he doesn't, then you should really get worried because then there's really no really good backup option and they will have struck out on their top two guys after offering them more money than anyone else did. And that's a bad sign. Yeah. Because like we said, the zoomed the alo, by the way, I would say is like Lamont Butler, probably right in the Lamont Butler range. I think Rob writes better than Lamont Butler, which is partially why I wanted. If they miss out on them, like I said, then they'll probably overpay for a point guard that maybe he's not as good as not that many left. Yeah. That's what I'm saying. He's not as good as what we had. Yeah. I mean, one, one person I did talk to last night who knows this class really well said, look, Matt, here's one thing you should tell your fans. The top 10 guys on these lists are better than everybody else. Rob writes one of the top 10. He said, but God 11 through God 75, it's not that much different. Hmm. He goes a lot of it's just fit and whether or not. And he was like, ask people in your fan base, who would you rather have Colin Chandler, Joe Diabate, Denzel Aberdeen, Brandon Garrison, Jasper Johnson. He was like, everybody's going to give you different answers. Right. That's kind of how it is for all of these teams to, to a well, or, you know, these, you know, these guys, and that makes sense to me. When you're one, they did a good job of picking out those guys to fill their roster, you know, with guys from Drexel and Farah Dickinson and guys like that. Do you think Jasper's going to go to Arkansas? I do. I kind of have a gut feeling that's where he's going to end up. Got feelings are usually more than a gut when it comes to that group. I do not know. I'm saying that's my gut. Notice how he put that on me. He switched it. I mean, a cow apparently was in town, but the parent, but like to give an example, I mean, if, if, if Cal gets him, he, he's getting Jasper to start. Yes. So, you know what? That's why I'm saying that lots of teams don't have a roster. Jasper's not even on the top hundred list. And he would go to Arkansas and probably start maybe start. Yeah. So one person writes in here, Matt, do you think our fan base contributes to this with the toxicity? No, not really. I mean, I, I think that's an easy excuse. First of all, you got to remember only like 1% of the, of the world is on Twitter. Right? Like it's like, like, let me ask you, Phels, are you guys on Twitter a lot? You are. You too are. Are you on Twitter a lot? Neither of you are on. Mario's only on occasionally. Shannon aren't, Mario's not on at all. Shannon, do you spend? Yeah, I'm on Twitter quite a bit. Yeah. Mario said he's not on. Shannon's on something. My point is we, I just broke my necklace. Oh, you did? Yeah. Yeah. My buddy's daughter made that for me. Oh, okay. I thought it was the white necklace. There's not the white necklace. And it went everywhere. All right. What was I saying? Oh, Twitter. Yeah. So I think a lot of it is, if you're online a lot, it feels more than it is in the real world because it was pretty toxic yesterday as the day went on. But, but, but, but I think also Louisville getting a lot of guys. That doesn't help Louisville's career. Louisville's going to have the most expensive roster in the country next year. How are they getting all that money? Where's that money coming from? I don't know. Planet Fitness must be having a lot of memberships. All right. We'll take your calls right after this. KSR. TJ Smith, personal injury attorney. Call TJ. He'll make him pay. Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. Welcome back to the sports radio 859-280-2287. Text machine is 772-7745-254. I had a very good source just send me. It'll be Bama, Arkansas or Georgia for Jasper Jones. So there you go. I heard the Bama in Arkansas. George is a new name into the mix there. If he goes to Georgia, just remember where you heard it first. I remember where I heard it first. Will you? Yeah. Brian, you'll say. I will broadcast it forever. One person writes, Matt, two years ago, Ryan was great at his locks as to who we were going to get. Last year he struggled. I have a feeling it's an every other year thing for Ryan. So who are his lot? Has he heard any locks so far? Nope. I'm telling you, I think we all learned last year that the trans-reportal people are an overnight thing. It's a bidding war. And it's making out bid the other person in the next day. We will go to the phone. What do you think about Lamello Ball? Should he have gotten kicked out for grabbing bam last night in that game? That was dirty. I think at a dirty play like that, you kick the kid out. I don't care who it is. I'm not just saying it was bam and mellow that we don't like. That was a dirty play last night. I thought it was pretty dirty. Yeah. I mean, I thought he, you know, he, he'd done it before. Did you see? Did it two years ago? No, that's, he did it to bam two years ago. To bam two years ago. I mean, I, I bet he wasn't trying to hurt him. Probably not. But he did hurt him. Yeah. And so it's a dirty play. So it's a dirty play. I mean, and he should have been kicked out. If bam can't play, then he should not play. Play, play and game the playoffs is a big deal. It's a great game though. Did you watch it? Didn't watch any of it. Oh, it was awesome. I mean, back and forth and big shots down the stretch and Tyler hero made some plays. How heroes hit a couple of crazy shots to get them there, but he should have been kicked out. Yeah. And like I said, it's not great environment too. Charlotte's had a heck of environment. Now just cause it was bam, we love bam. And I've been called mellow and we were anti-mellow when he was playing at UCLA. You just can't do that. They can't allow that kind of play. Yeah. No matter what level. All right. I'm a little hesitant because you don't know what the fans are going to be like here. But let's see what we got. Let's go the phone Shannon. Who's up first? Let's go to William. William, go ahead, William. Hey, good morning. You come on here talking about fire and people all the time. Who is? Hang on. Hang on. Hang on. Hang on. Hang on. Hang on. I've never talked about firing anybody. No, I mean, I can hear people. Hang on. Don't just, you don't. Don't just come in here and say that I say things I don't say. I've never one time said anyone should be fired except Joker Phillips in what? Ever year that was so you so you're either not a listener or you're just lying and since there's a lot of people listening right now that don't normally listen. I want to be clear. I'd have never said to fire anybody. Now go ahead. Okay. Well, I don't know if it's an AI picture, but whoever took that picture of you with your knee up on a box should get fired because that is enough. All right. Well, I appreciate the call. I appreciate the call. Good start. Yesterday we started with Burt Kreischer. Today, by the way, I'll vote, but hang on. I'll Burt Kreischer and apologize. I forgot about something. Okay. Someone reminded me he came on this show. He did. I was going to say that yesterday, but I wasn't for sure. Why didn't you say it? I feel now I feel bad. He did come on this show during COVID when we did that whole see who you can get to call in. You remember that? Yep. And someone got Burt Kreischer to call in and then he talked positively about us on his podcast. Oh, he did. Yeah. He said that we were like a lot of fun. So now I feel, now I feel bad because he was nice to us. And so I'm still not going to say I'm a huge fan of the comedy, but he was a nice guy when he was on here. And so I owe Burt Kreischer an apology. Well, I hope he doesn't hear what we said yesterday and talk bad about us now. If he does, I hope he hears me saying now that now I remember. I'd forgotten that because when we had him on those years ago, I didn't know who he was. Remember? And then we rise. He was a big deal and he's blown up since then, but see, I almost said that, but I wasn't really 100% sure that you were supposed to correct me yesterday. I didn't know that. I had forgotten about it. I don't even have to worry about it until, until, until somebody said it. So anyway, who's up next Morris Morris. Go ahead, Morris. Yeah. Two points. First, it's too bad. This isn't happening later in the summer because we could take it up a notch by learning the flight pad to the recruits and have our farmers cut banners in the corn like they do corn mazes. That would have been good. Yeah. And second, I'm trying not to panic and still be positive. I'm still positive overall because, you know, purpose, hope's first year. I didn't really know the guys we got other than maybe Lamont Butler because of the tourney, but I'm getting to wonder if a player already has a relationship with another school or maybe they have a geographic preference. If their agent says, go to Kentucky to get a number to up your value. I'm hoping we're not becoming the, getting the reputation to shop Kentucky so you can take it to another school. I mean, we might be, but I think the, I appreciate the call. We're not the only school that gets used to up offers for other schools. The question is, why can't we, why can't we close? That's the question. These other schools are closing all of them. They get a guy on campus. It's over. We're not. Like I said, I think, what do you think it is? I did a lot of talking in that first 30 minutes. What do you think it is? I mean, you, you hear things. I think I hate to say it, but it's what we do in our show. No, it's what you need to be clear. This is what he's saying just for the record. Not, not a decision. I want to be, I want to be very clear that whatever he's about to say, this is Ryan Lemon saying it, not me. Now go ahead. It appears that maybe our coaching staffs having a hard time to connecting with the younger players, not just the recruits, but even the guys we had on the team last year. It just seems, why do you think that is? I don't know. I really, I honestly don't know, but it just seems like, do you think there's two selling the front of the jersey? Maybe that's still maybe in Tucky. The problem is I don't know. Okay. So this is a hard conversation to have because it is because he, Mark is a, is a great guy. Yeah. And I've only had one long conversation with him and then a couple of shorter conversations. He is really nice, but he's like, he's really nice and he's really intense, but he also like, I don't know. He doesn't necessarily put you at ease because he's almost, I just wonder, I do wonder if he can relate to the guys. And I think Mo Williams helps, but then I wonder how many of the guys on the staff could relate to those guys. Yeah. I don't know. If you've got, again, it's horrible to say, but you got a Mark Fox and a Mark Pope, can they relate to the younger kids? And the longer this goes on, it seems like there is an issue. I mean, it's not the money. It's not the facilities. It's not their tradition. It's not the program. What is it then? Yeah. I mean, we're not getting, at least what the guys were talking about so far, we're not getting outbid. Like they're just, I mean, in the Rob Wright situation, I think if he goes to BYU, he might have taken slightly less money to do that. That's a big slap in your face. If he goes back to BYU, BYU for less money than Planet Kentucky, Kentucky for more money. Like Colin Chandler went to BYU for more money. BYU was willing to pay like a million more dollars for Colin than we were. I can't begrudge that. I also don't blame Pope for that. I really don't. Like what are you supposed to do? But like, if you don't get a guy who you offered more money and they still go somewhere else to BYU, you can't even have any power. Check a power on that campus. I knew, I knew you were going to say that the question, the question Shannon was just when, and that's why I called this police officer to take you away. You guys on fire there? Yeah. What's, who's next? Let's go to Randall Randall. Go ahead, Randall. I buy my, uh, I just got a suggestion, you know, let the coat for the coaching staff if Ditch Carson's and take the kids down to Malibu, Jack's get some pictures with, you know, Donnie Moe and all the guys riding go carts. That'd be, that'd put a little, uh, excitement. That feels a little cheesy though to me too. I feel like that, I feel like that sort of, well, well either that or get, you know, marked behind the desk, uh, like the Godfather and, and you got Mark Fox up there on the shoulder, like Sonny and they got the contract on the desk. Yeah. Again, you're, you're, you're saying things that would, you're saying things that would be like a priest, like what 55 year old men would want to come. That's not what college kids, I would say, well, just put, send them to a party on campus or you know, I don't know. I appreciate the call. Whatever it is, it's not working. It's not. Like I said, this is not just a one off thing right now. We can go back to last year. They kind of whiffed on their main targets last year. What if though, like this afternoon you just were to get a commitment from Rob right? Would everybody be good? I'm, I'm changing my mind immediately. All right. What if every, what if you were to get a commitment from zoomed, the alo this afternoon, then what happens? I'm excited, but not as excited. I think that's fair. Are you willing to kind of take a deep breath and then see what happens with the rest of the class? If we get like, say, yeah, zoomed yellow and then a Donnie Freeman. Okay. Well now I think the kid from Furman, they got a really good chance of getting him the Alex Wilkins. Okay. Who I think is good. Yeah. Shooter. I was told as talented as anybody, just kind of wild. Wild as a player, not as a person. Okay. And it's Kentucky. It's Kentucky or Yukon for him. But I think we're offering slightly more money, which again, if he goes to Yukon when we're offering more money, that's also a, you know, and for a young 22, 20 year old kid, Yukon's been the team. So what if we end up at the end of the week? We have zoomed the alo Alex Wilkins and Donnie Freeman. Where are you then? And I'm with Malachi and Cam. I am. I'm not thinking we're final four bound, but that's a squad I could get behind. I think it's solid. Solid. Yeah. Okay. A lot of times people avoid thinking about their roof. Someone writes, you have never said that you want anybody to be fired, but you didn't address the substance of what he said, which is that picture. I like that picture. It's worked very well for me. That's your glamor shot photo. Because people aren't used to seeing me like that. I understand. But yeah, I'm a fan of that picture. There are people that really like that picture. The most important thing, do the ladies like the picture? Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. I'm not worried about whether a dude likes the picture. Me or Mario or Drew or Shannon. Who cares if a guy likes a guy? I didn't take the picture for Mario. We kind of made fun of you with that picture. You should. It's a thirst trap picture. It is. That's exactly right. That's my thirst trap picture. This should be your pro-vot picture. That's my version of Shannon when he wore those little skimps in the ring that one time. It's his thirst trap picture. That's right. Sometimes I need a good laugh. I just pull that picture up of Shannon and his Speedo and just get a good laugh. Yeah, I agree. He is jealous. Are you? I decided not to go to WrestleMania. I was thinking about flying out to Vegas and going, but I decided not to. Just a lot of money to get out there, go and then come back and go to the hotel. What? You're going to the concert in Middlesbrough this weekend instead? What concert? What did you say there was like a big concert? Dwight Yocum. Dwight Yocum is in Lexington. It's right outside my door. Oh, I thought I was in Middlesbrough. No, it's in Lexington. It's at the park. It's at that park. It got in the park. Dwight Yocum and ZZ Top. You can't miss that. Come on, Dwight Yocum. When I was a kid, that was my favorite artist. You can't miss that then. Can I say one thing before we go back to the phone? Yeah. I finally have found a policy. People have asked me for years. Matt, you dirty liberal. Why can't you ever say anything good about Trump? I've got something good to say about Trump. Roll the tape, Shannon. I saw yesterday, he said that he believes his favorite thing in life is Diet Coke. He said, now he went further a little more than I would. He said he thinks Diet Coke can help cure cancer because he said when you pour it on grass, it kills grass. First of all, I'm not even, is that even true? If you pour it on grass, it kills grass. I know you could take corrosion off of like your battery on a car if you pour it on a car. I've seen that. But I need to be careful because I have Diet Cokes and now I have grass. So I need to be careful if that's true. I also don't understand the scientific leap between if you pour it on grass, it will also then kill cancer. Is grass cancerous? I'm not aware. I don't, I don't know, but I will say this, leave all the specifics to the side. He is right about Diet Coke. It's one of the things we should, you know, he also apparently does not like dogs. There you go. Don't bring up the golf thing. I know what you're going to say. She said that he cheats on golf. I do not cheat on golf. I just move the ball into a better spot. Sometimes like McDonald's. You like McDonald's. Yeah, I don't like McDonald's. I'm not a McDonald's food guy. I'm a Diet Coke guy. Yeah, but you're there in the line every morning. So we have a policy that we agree with. That's a good, good start. Good start. Bipartisan compromise. There is some magic in the Diet Coke. I don't know if it'll kill grass. I don't know if it'll kill cancer, but there is a little magic in there. Is that a thing though that it kills grass? I've never heard that. He said that like everybody knows it kills grass. And I didn't think that was true, but maybe so. Who's up next? Tyler. Tyler, go ahead Tyler. Hey Matt, I've got two things. First is I'm not really, I listen almost every day, but I haven't heard you mention anything about it, but I wanted to get your two cents on Denzel Aberdeen going back to Florida. Yeah, we didn't talk about that. So Denzel Aberdeen is entering the portal. He's asking for a fifth year. I have no idea if I think you'll get it. Now they are probably going to give everybody a fifth year, like a five year thing, but I don't know if that will apply to these guys. Maybe Aberdeen's hoping it will. Him going back to Florida. Be honest with you. Not a good sign. Not a great sign that a kid comes here and then decides to go back where he was originally, especially since he was good here. It's not like it's not like he didn't play. He was good here and we liked him. And so yeah, I didn't love that. Yeah, I mean he was one of our best players. He's our second best player. Yeah. Tom's, he was our first best player down the stretch. My second thing was just me personally, the way Stokes has drawn this whole thing out so, so long, it's making me want him less and less. That's just me personally. Yeah. I mean, I think you know with, I appreciate the call. You know with Tyron Stokes what you're, what you're getting when you sign up. You know how you can meet somebody. You gotta be careful with this analogy. You know how you can like date somebody and you know this person is beautiful or this person is fun, but you know you're signing up for a lot of extra stuff. Got you. Drama, drama. Drama. You just know, okay, this is, this is a, this is a, you know, a miss Kentucky, but there's going to be a lot that comes with it. That's what Tyron Stokes is. You're going to be signing up for stuff. But I think the different, the reason I want him is the good thing about Tyron Stokes is there's drama, but when the game starts, he's everything you want. He's a team player. He's a great passer. He's unselfish. His teammates love him. You get all this other stuff off the court, but when the game starts, so he doesn't bring that drama on the court like some guys do. Does that make sense? I think that's a good one. Demarcus is perfect. There you go. Demarcus is the best example about that. You know, Demarcus had, you had to, I love Demarcus, but people had to deal with this stuff, but when he played, he played unselfishly and he gave it his all and you gave every God, everything you want. That's why I think if you're Mark Pope, you got to wait. If the guy's going to wait a couple of weeks, I think you have to wait a couple of weeks to see if you can get him, get you two more weeks to kind of work on him as well. Try to convince him to come here. Yeah. One person writes, Matt, if Trump comes out against pickleball, does that help? Yes. Now we're starting to build. We're starting to build an agenda. Wow. He is running mate. You guys are so. No, I think hopefully he doesn't run pretty thing again. What's next? Let's go to Joey. Joey, go ahead, Joey. Yeah. I'd like to throw out a, maybe a crazy hypothetical. Okay. We know how things played out with Calipari and Kenny Payne. Yes. Do you foresee a possible world ever where the coach that's out there that has said the worst mistake he ever made was leaving Kentucky would possibly come back to UK and Pope would assist him the way I do not. Yeah. No, there's, I mean, you can't. Okay. No, no. I mean, Kenny Payne went to Arkansas, but Kenny Payne did not become Cal's assistant at Louisville. Right. So no. Now, could I see a world where Mark Pope was left Kentucky if he was fired and he went and became an assistant at St. John's for Rick? Yeah, I could see that work. Yes. But I could not see a world that Rick came and became the head coach in Kentucky with Mark is his assistant. I do not think that would happen. No, I appreciate it. A lot of people would like to see that. I think it's not going to happen. Not going to happen. All right. We'll take a break. Hour number two. Talk a little bit about this and Chevy Chase. KSR. After the big game, like most people, I kept thinking about the commercials and there was one that stayed with me. It was from the Blue Square Alliance Against Hate and it wasn't loud or flashy. It showed a Jewish kid being targeted at school and another student who chose not to ignore it. As someone who was Jewish, that moment felt very real to me. Not dramatic, just familiar. And what struck me was how clearly it showed that hate doesn't always announce itself, but the impact is still huge. If you saw the Blue Square spot during the big game, it's worth thinking about. And if you want to show support, sharing the Blue Square is one small way to do that. At CVS, it matters that we're not just in your community, but that we're part of it.
