Summary

Miller and Moulton's final hour of February 24, 2026 covers sports news including Chris Sale's contract extension with the Braves, NFL rule change discussions around replay booth penalties, and extensive analysis of the 1980 Miracle on Ice hockey game. The hosts also discuss NBA and college basketball matchups, along with lighter segments on celebrity birthdays and unusual news stories.

Insights
  • Chris Sale's Hall of Fame candidacy is severely hampered by three injury-plagued seasons (2020-2022) where he pitched only 11 games total, costing him approximately 30 wins that would have pushed him toward 200 career wins
  • NFL competition committee is unlikely to adopt the UFL's tush push ban, but there is serious discussion about allowing replay booth officials to call specific penalties like face masks, offsides, and illegal procedure
  • The 1980 Miracle on Ice victory over Finland was more precarious than commonly understood—if Finland had tied the game, the Soviet Union could have won gold based on goal differential in the round-robin format
  • Kirk Cousins' impending free agency creates opportunity for the Minnesota Vikings to upgrade from J.J. McCarthy, while the Eagles' A.J. Brown trade discussions suggest teams haven't offered enough draft capital yet
  • College basketball receiver crop is strong for Day 2 NFL draft picks, making multi-pick trades potentially more valuable than single first-round picks in receiver trades

you're listening to miller and molten coming at you from the floor meister studios floor meisters keeping it real and now here's mark miller and david molten it is time for the diamond district bonus hour final hour of miller and molten on this final Tuesday of February. The 24th of February, the 46th anniversary of the U.S. beating Finland on a Sunday morning into the early afternoon in Lake Placid. A moment that stood by itself until two days ago. but trailing 2-1 after 2 the U.S. dominated the third scored three times and I really don't think most people watching understood the totality of the whole game because if when it was 3-2 like Mark Johnson's final goal I think was with like five minutes left and even though we were controlling the third period mark, if Finland had scored and that game ends in a 3-3 tie, Russia wins the gold. And it didn't matter that we beat them head-to-head. In the Olympics, and I don't know if they still do this, okay, and obviously they don't because they have a gold medal game and a bronze medal game, but that was a four-team round robin. Russia was the one seed on the one side. We were the two seed on the other. Sweden was the one seed in our group, even though we had the same record because of gold differential. So that's why Sweden played Finland on Friday. We played the Soviets. Our win moved us a point ahead of the Soviets. But if we tied Finland, the Soviet Union by beating Sweden would have tied us. and their goal differential was monstrous. Well, it was a round robin, but a little bit different. I mean, you're right, but the preliminary round games between Russia and Finland counted in the standings and the preliminary games between Sweden and the U.S., which was the U.S.'s first game in the Olympics when they tied. Those both counted, and it was in points, and it was old-school hockey points. They didn't have overtime. It was one for a tie, two for a win. You know, if Russia would have came back, I believe, David, if Russia would have come back and tied that game in the third, it would have just ended 4-4. There would have just been a tie. There was no overtime in those games. Correct. Because it was based on points. Correct. So you corrected yourself, obviously, properly by saying it wouldn't happen now. Because when it gets so when it when the medal round started, Russia had two points. The U.S. and Sweden had one point. Finland had zero because they lost to Russia. And those points then counted in the medal round. We beat Russia. We had three. And that's why, as David points out, if we would have lost to Finland, there was a possibility that they wouldn't have gotten a medal at all. and Sweden and Finland on that Friday night after the U.S. USSR game they tied so heading into Sunday it was the USA with three points Russia and Sweden playing each other with two and Finland with one and if Finland would have beaten the U.S. there was actually a way with a tie between Russia and Sweden for the U.S. to come out without a medal at all. Right. Because then goal differential factored in. Right. And I think we were in good shape with goal differential. I think we would have gotten the bronze. Okay. But I know there was a way for us not to medal in that game. Yes. Period. There was. And that's why, to me, when the third period's going on, we've overcome the 2-1 deficit. Then we score. We've got a 3-2 lead. And we're dominating. But I remember thinking, man, Finland scores here. We ain't going to win gold. We really need one more. This could be, you know, because Finland's going to pull their goalie late and we can't give up the tying goal. Some sports news, I don't know if breaking news, but some things have happened during our show that don't normally happen. Chris Sale and the Braves just agreed to a one-year $27 million extension, a club option for $30 million in 28. Sale was signed for this year, but he would have become a free agent. So now when the league has a lockout, Chris Sale will be under contract. Also, the Lions, it was announced, are going to play in Munich, Germany this year. Adam Schefter reporting that. And lastly, while the competition committee is not talking about changing a whole lot. In fact, Rich McKay there said our game's in a pretty good spot. They don't feel like they need to change a lot of rules. But for those of you who like the UFL, they banned the tush push this morning. For what it's worth. We'll see if the NFL follows suit. But everything I'm reading, David, doesn't look like they're going to. There was talk of going back to what the original rule is, if you're not able to aid the runner, which I'm all for, because that doesn't just include the tush push. That includes the play when you basically end up with a rugby scrum and the lineman push the running back another five yards down the field. I hate it. I hate that more than the tush push. I truly do. what happened to stopping forward forward progress that's always been the rule in the sport but the the only thing that i've seen david is that the like what do they call it the you know the the instant replay that they do um you know when they when they rule on the field that that pass was incomplete or whatever the case may be that they're talking about letting that group the the upstairs booth replays call a couple of penalties now i don't know if that would just be face mask i think it's a very dangerous slippery slope but david and i have always been fans of getting the call right and challenging anything but i have seen some stuff david where the competition committee has talked about allowing the replay booth to be able to essentially throw a flag would be a big departure from how they've ever done anything in the league you name me a penalty that you would be comfortable after the fact the replay official buzzing down, so to speak, and going, yeah, that's a face mask on the Broncos, 15 yards. That's it. I think that's the only one I'd be comfortable with. Okay. What about, remember, if we're keeping the tush push, but an illegal motion, procedure, somebody light off sides and they don't call it and you go, oh, man, he was in the neutral zone. I'm just curious, how many penalties are we going to let the replay booth call? And I think Mark's internet froze up. But he was okay with face masks. Are we going to do a legal procedure and offsides? and if so, how much further are we going? I'll go too many men on the field if by chance they miss that. I would be okay with that. But I don't know how many we can go here. How many would you go? Now, text us, Twitch and YouTube chat rooms. How many penalties are you going to be okay with if the call comes from the replay booth? I could do face masks. I could do offsides. Entering the neutral zone. illegal procedure if the lineman moves just before the snap and they miss it and i can go 12 men on the field which I will say they hardly ever miss They are very good at that. Every now and then a coach has to challenge it. But how many more are you willing to do? because, you know, to me, they can't do pass interference. They can't do holding. To me. And, Mark, I know we lost you there, but I asked, and to me the four penalties I would be okay with the booth calling down and calling are face mask, offsides, illegal procedure, 12 men on the field. How about you? I did lose you there. I know you asked. David, what were the four that you said? Because I'm okay with the procedure. I'm okay with the face mask. I don't know what else I'd be okay with. I said I'm okay with offsides. if someone just lines up in the neutral zone and they didn't call it and the official upstairs goes. 73 was offsides. And 12 men on the field. I think that's a good one. You know, someone says roughing the passer when it really isn't. I just think that's a gray area and it needs to stay on the field. I think that's a judgment call and I don't like that going upstairs. I don't disagree with the concept. I just think it's too vague. Well, the other thing is it's not what they're talking about doing. What they're talking about doing is throwing a flag initiated from up above. Okay, you're talking about picking a flag up. They ain't never going to do that. No, they are not. In my opinion. No, they are not. And the other rule, not an NFL rule, the other thing I'm hearing a lot of talk of belongs on Saturday, and I think you and I are both for it, the pardon penalty, and then the player being suspended for the second half targeting penalty, and then that player being suspended the first half of the next game, there's a chance that goes away, and I hope that's the case. I'm curious, will they go so far as to do yellow card, red card? Because that's what I would like to see. is that you know a targeting that looks blatant you can throw the guy out and a targeting where the head kind of came down and they collide they can have a judgment and say that's not that's not worthy of an objection and i do think by the way that you should not be penalized the next game no i agree with you and obviously it reared its head in the college football playoffs with the Miami player. So those are some of the things going on just in and around the sports world. A little bit of baseball with Sale getting re-signed. A couple of changes that may or may not happen in the National Football League. Today was the day when and what's on tap. All 25 minutes ahead. Diamond District Bonus Hour, Miller & Moulton. Welcome back to Miller & Moulton. Text the guys what's in your mind at 21000. That's 21000. And now, here's David Moulton. 21 minutes past the hour. Miller and Moulton, millerandmoulton.com, millerandmoultononx. News coming out of the combine, even though I don't think anyone's worked out yet. No. No. And as Mark mentioned last segment, Chris Sale, good for him. He was under contract for this year. Braves gave him a $27 million contract for next year. And they have the club option if they want to keep him in 2028. Hope he can stay healthy. Because, man, listen, when healthy, he's been a Hall of Fame caliber pitcher. and I still think he has an outside shot at it if he can put three good years together. I'll put it this way, David. If in one of the next two years, he leads the Braves to a World Series, that might be the cherry on top, but I think it would be a good to an above-average regular season followed by a great playoff run by him. and you know i think about that now because if you're anybody in the national league that takes down the dodgers it's going to be damn near historic well that is certainly true before whatever the new economics are if you can do it right now i mean he won his cy young and didn't he win the pitching triple crown two years ago in the National League. But I still think it's an outside shot because of injury, and that's the only reason. Oh, there's no doubt. To me, getting to a World Series in the National League, whether it's this year or whatever shortened season they play next year, if they play one, against the juggernaut that is the Los Angeles Dodgers, that would do things that, to me, to baseball people, that they don't expect. He's got 145 wins. I think he'd have to get to 200. That's almost impossible. I mean, that's averaging 18 a year for three years. That's really tough to do in today's game. I know. And not only that, he'd have to do it at age 37, 38, and 39. No. We got Verlander and obviously not getting those type of wins, but he's what just turned 43. Sale two years ago got 18 wins. But you're asking to do it three years in a row. I know. Plus one, by the way. I know. I mean, it's 18, 18, 19 in all seriousness. Yep. He got his World Series with the Red Sox, remember? He was their number one starter who came out of the bullpen and got the save. He got the final out of the 2018 World Series. All right. The other thing, there's no doubt. Listen, he had three years. He didn't pitch in 2020. And in 21 and 22 combined, he pitched 11 times. So he went three years, Mark, where he pitched 11 games. 11 games in three years. It cost him the Hall of Fame. I mean, it clearly did. He throws up, he could throw up three C-plus seasons. You know where he'd be in strikeouts right now? He's at almost 2,100 strikeouts right now. Okay, he'd be at 2,600 easy. So he would get to 3,000. But that's, I mean, we are in the most strikeout era part of the game in the history of the sport. Is that going to factor in on a good side for him or a bad side? Not a bad side, but you know what I mean. I understand. Let's just say he gets 10 wins a year, okay? And by the way, leading up to those injury-plague seasons, he had 17, 11, 12, 13, 17, 17, 12. Give him 10 wins. Give him 30 wins. Now he's at $1.75. So now he's going to get to 200 wins. And we've all acknowledged we ain't never going to have a 300-game winner anymore. Okay? You throw 210, 220, 230, you'll get more consideration than you ever got before. I got you. But you're giving him wins in years that he didn't play, and voters don't do that. No, no, no, no. I'm not saying he's got a Hall of Fame resume. I'm saying those three years lost to injury, to me, are going to keep him out of the Hall of Fame. Okay, I got you. I'm sorry. I misunderstood your argument there. When he's done, we're going to look back and we're going to go, well, if you plug in three C-plus seasons in those three years. I mean, that's why I make the argument Ted Williams and Bob Feller. Okay. I mean, Ted Williams lost five prime years in two wars. Take a look at what his numbers are. I mean, Ted Williams would have been right there with Babe Ruth and home runs. Right there. Bonds, I mean, Aaron might have broken Ted Williams' record, not Ruth's. You know, Ted Williams didn't get the 3,000 hits. You put those five years in the equation. Hell, Ted Williams might be third all-time in hits. I mean you know Mark I always made the argument that Ruth was the best player of all time But to me Teddy Ballgame was number two Five five years lost to war Five. Unreal. So that's a little news on sale there. Also, the Falcons GM announcing this morning that he's talked to Kirk Cousins and that Cousins will be released in March. I think they're making a mistake. I don't disagree. I don't disagree. But if you're the Minnesota Vikings, how interested are you in Cousins? Very. Very. listen if i'm the vikings i can't go into this year with jj mccarthy as my starter he's not good enough not yet i can't waste another year i can't now if he can be the number two quarterback and he comes off the bench if something happens to the number one and he proves that, oh, okay, all right, now you're ready. It's a different story. Also, the Eagles talking the talk that they're not moving A.J. Brown. Basically, to me, that means one thing. There's not been an offer good enough to move A.J. Brown. Right. They've let the four teams they're talking to know you've got to up the end. Do better. Right. Do better. It's very simple. So a lot of time between now and the draft. I mean, if you're going to move them to me, you've got to move them before this year's draft. I don't want 2027 picks. I want 2026 picks if I'm the Philadelphia Eagles. Okay. Doesn't mean I wouldn't take a 27 pick, but if I'm moving him, something in this draft has to be a part of what I'm getting. Well, to me, I mean, I think people are offering 2026 picks. To me, the question is, would you trade him for a second and others things, or do you have to get a one? Well, you know what's interesting to me? Let's just look at the Patriots. I would take, you know, it's where I would look at 2027 picks with the Patriots. I may say, give me two twos. Give me your two this year. Give me your two next year. Because I know that that 27 two is going to be pretty good. Uh-huh. So it's where the move to the Patriots interests me if I'm the Eagles in getting multiple picks and not worrying as much about the one. And by the way, some of the stuff I've been reading, David, the receiver crop, very good for day two picks. So take that for what it's worth. Miller and Moulton. We'll get into the combine with Pat Kerwin tomorrow. Seth Everett also on the show tomorrow. And we'll have, it looks like we won't have the numbers until this afternoon on the hockey, but we will have today was the day when the good, the bad, and the ugly. And what's on tap. That's all next. Miller and Moulton, the diamond district bonus hour. Save lives. Say yes. You're listening to Miller and Moulton. And now, here's Mark Miller and David Moulton. 22 minutes till we're done. Out of here, that's it. On this final Tuesday of February, Miller and Moulton, millermoulton.com, Miller underscore Moulton. On X, some good suggestions, I think, as to who you look like now that you shaved your head and you look like you're ready for the Marines. Joe Rogan's been suggested. Scott Van Pelt has been suggested. My favorite has been Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor in the original Superman movie. That's my personal favorite. I don't know if I look like that, but the fact that I got that comparison made me smile today. So, you know, I... I had some of the suggestions. We've had a bunch of them, actually. More suggestions than I thought, because I was even struggling to come up with folks. I like your Todd Martin. I don't think that that's a poor one. You've got to dig him a little bit there. No doubt. I'm a tennis player, but leave it to David to go deep in the Rolodex to find a doppelgagger for me. What I'm most interested in, to be honest with you, and I did like the Billy Bob Thornton from Sling Blade. That hurts, but it's funny. There is the chance that when my hair grows back, and it's happened to a lot of people who have gone through this, that it will come back curly. That's what I'm most excited about. If I get a Jared Bednar salad out of this, holy cow. Right, because you've had very straight hair. Very straight hair. Right. So I can even take if it goes gray, because I've not had gray hair my entire life, really. if it goes gray and it's a little wavy i'm all in i'm all in all right that'd be awesome that's now what i'm rooting for it's that time again nearing the end but not quite there yet here's mark miller with today was the day when not a lot today not a lot good we don't even have to go that far back we start in 1972, Priscilla and Elvis separate. I mean, that predates Charles and Diana, David. Oh, yeah. No, no, that was huge. 1980, we talked about it earlier this hour. The hockey team clinches gold. 4-2 win over Finland two days after beating the Russians 4-3. It was today in 81, however, David, that Prince Charles announced his engagement to Lady Di. Gretzky scores his 78th of the season today in 82 to set the record he would finish with 92 goals. We all watched this. I don't obviously remember it happening in 1988. You may, David. You paid attention to these things more than me. I remember it from the movie. But it was today in 88 that the Supreme Court votes 8-0 to overturn the $200,000 settlement awarded to the Reverend Jerry Farwell for his emotional distress after being parodied at Hustler magazine. 1989 roberto duran wins his fourth world title in different weight classes when he defeats iran barkley in a 12-round split decision to win the wbc middleweight title i believe ring magazine voted it the fight of the decade it was a spectacular fight a Dan Barkley underrated fighter because there were so many great guys in those divisions during that time today in 93 Eric Clapton, big winner at the Grammys, pre-awards for Tears in Heaven, two more for his Unplugged album and the best rock song for the acoustic version of Layla it was today in 2002, Canada whoops up on the US 5-2. Remember when you guys were good in hockey? Joe Sackick and Jerome McGinley both had two goals. 5-2 win over the U.S. in Salt Lake City. Take it easy there, big fella. Come on now. Come on. I've got four years of this. Don't think I'm stopping. Is this all because of McKinnon? Yeah. Okay. So this is all Nathan McKinnon's fault, why you are going to dog them for four years. Yeah, that's pretty good. All right. I just wanted to know. That's all. Today in 08, Castro retires as president of Cuba due to ill health. He only was in power for 50 years. Today in 2013, Jimmy Johnson wins his second Daytona. Danica started from the pole and finished eighth, the best finish ever by a woman at Daytona. She was second with a lap and a half to go. Nobody helped her, did they? And she never should have moved. She had the inside position. She just should have stayed there. I can't believe her team didn't tell her, you ain't going to get any help. So don't move. You got good track position. You're fast. Just stay there. And maybe somebody late on the final lap helps her. Okay? She never should have moved. Today in 2020, Harvey Weinstein found guilty of rape and criminal sexual acts that ignited the Me Too movement. And it was four years ago today that Russia invaded the Ukraine Ponus Wagner Hall of Famer Fred Dean and Steve Jobs would have all celebrated birthdays today This is getting obscure, but I can't help it. Edward Olmos, you remember him as the chief of police there on Miami Vice, was in Stand and Deliver, which was also a great movie. He's 79. Rupert Holmes is 79. I'm going to leave this one to Raj because I think some of you in the Twitch chat room, I don't think David will get it. Raj, any idea who Rupert Holmes is and what song he's famous for singing? Is it the Pina Colada song? Look at that. We got ourselves a winner. He's also 79 today. George Thorogood. Love George Thorogood. He's 76. Hall of Famer Eddie Murray is 70. goaltender Mike Vernon 63 Jeff Garcia and a guy that David loves just because he helped him win that Stanley Cup Alexei Kovala both 53 today Simeon Rice is 52 you know what the Bucks could use David oh tell me about it should be in the Hall of Fame average Mayweather Jr. who's scheduled to fight Manny Pacquiao in the fall turned 49 today. What did I miss, David? Oh, you didn't miss anything. Simeon Rice, 12 years in the league, averaged 10 sacks a year for 12 years and was on the Bucs, the 0-2 Bucs. Would be the fifth Hall of Famer on that defense. Apparently it's okay if you play on the Steelers and on other teams, But I think Simeon Rice is a Hall of Fame defense event. Time to see life a little bit differently. Here's Mark Miller with the good, the bad, and the ugly. What do you got, Mark? For the good, this is almost like an unbelievable story to me. But for the good, we go to St. Petersburg, Russia. where a child fell from the seventh story of the flat that they lived in. He was in the, or she was in the windowsill. People were screaming. The child fell out. Mom is an influencer for what it's worth. But there was a caretaker. Kerulio Abadulev, 37, was on the street. he caught the infant who fell seven stories. Oh, my goodness. They fell into snow as the child struck him in the chest. They both crashed to the ground, but both are going to be fine. Amazing. Awesome. That's the catch of the year right there. Yes. For the bad, we go to California, where an East Hollywood resident said that the robot from the Cocoa Food Delivery Service uprooted her garden after it got entangled in her fence. Kayla Real says she was inside her home when she heard the commotion the robot was making. Apparently, the robot tore up the garden, got a fence caught in the wheel, and then the robot was going down the road. She was so frantic, she was chasing the robot down the road, yelling at it. She said, I chased after it and looked like a total crazy person running after the robot in the middle of the street and yelling at it. Apparently, these food delivery robots are a regular thing there. Are you kidding me? I mean, does anybody not get nervous over the fact that these robots, like, I don't know if they're attacks, but all of the things that seemingly go wrong with robots that we really want more of them on the street? Why are we getting rid of us? It scares the hell out of me. Why are we getting rid of us? No, I mean it. AI, robots. Why? What's wrong with us? What's wrong with us? We're doing okay, aren't we? Why can't we keep us? Okay? What's wrong with us? No? Go to Volusia County for the ugly, where a Florida man on probation was arrested earlier this month after SWAT teams arrived at his house and he locked the doors and started plushing all of the drugs he had down the toilet. Antoine Tillman took off from the house, apparently didn't get too far before he was tackled by the SWAT team, but it caused the police to do a little working on the plumbing where they discovered cocaine and packaging from the plumbing outside he was on felony probation which means he'll spend a lot more time in the pokey so you have worked on 90210 when dylan helped uh the the meth head there flush all the drugs down the toilet before the cops came they didn't check the plumbing That wouldn't work.
