Summary

Rob Shuter discusses Kanye West's UK ban and festival cancellation due to anti-Semitic remarks, Savannah Guthrie's return to the Today Show under strict workplace guidelines, and Howard Stern's lawsuit from a former assistant alleging a hostile work environment with bizarre NDAs. The episode explores consequences for public figures, workplace boundaries, and the separation of artist from art.

Insights
  • Consequence culture is replacing cancel culture—public figures face real repercussions for harmful speech, and redemption requires more than apologies or claims of change
  • Micro-audiences and algorithmic curation enable controversial figures to maintain success despite mainstream rejection, fragmenting the shared cultural experience
  • Corporate workplace policies increasingly blur personal and professional boundaries through extensive NDAs, creating tension between privacy protection and employee rights
  • Media organizations are implementing careful re-integration protocols for employees returning from personal crises, balancing compassion with operational normalcy
  • Celebrity privacy expectations are shifting; old-school celebrities like Howard Stern who maintain strict work-life separation are becoming culturally valued exceptions

This is an iHeart Podcast. Guaranteed human. Hello, hello, hello, hello, hello, hello, hello, hello, hello. Welcome to the Naughty But Nice Show. I'm your host, Rob Shooter. It is Wednesday. Today, our dear friend Donnie is off. I hope you're having a great day, Donnie. But don't worry, we've got a ton of gossip, of news to get to. So let's jump right in, noughties. What time is it, my friends? It is. Are you ready? It is tea time. I hope you're singing along. OK, big story at the top of the show. Kanye West has been banned from the UK. So banned. The festival has been cancelled and the fallout explodes. So Kanye's attempt at a comeback has just hit a brutal wall. the UK has officially denied him entry, triggering the sudden cancellation of the wireless festival and sending shockwaves through the music world. Let me explain. Sources say the decision stems from his past anti-Semitic remarks. We all know those. Hate, hate, hate. with officials ruling that his presence is not conductive to the public good. Sponsors have dropped out, including Pepsi, pressure mounted, and finally, the plug was pulled. Whose idea was it? Whose idea to book Kanye at this joyous music festival? I get they want a big star, I get they want a big headliner, But Kanye West? Really? That's who they booked? So West insists he has changed. It's interesting, he's not denying what he said. He put out a record praising Hitler. So it's there. He said it. It will live forever. So he insists that he's changed, though. He did say it, but he has changed, he said. Even offering to meet with Jewish leaders. How dare he? But the damage is already done. Now, some fans are divided. Critics are loud about this. But one thing is clear. Redemption is proving far harder than any headline grabbing comeback performance. So if he thinks you can say this stuff, if anybody thinks they can say such hateful, such evil stuff, and then just move on. I've changed. Not me. I'm not that person anymore. No. There are consequences. I get it. Some of my friends will call this cancel culture. I call it consequence culture. There's consequences to everything we do in life. We learn that as children, don't we? If we misbehave, there's a consequence. That consequence is up to your parents, but there is a consequence. And so I think in adult life too, there needs to be consequences. You can say and do what you want. We have free speech, thank goodness, in America. However, I don't have to listen. I don't have to buy your albums. I don't have to support you. This is what is so heartbreaking about this situation. Kanye is performing in L.A. and he's sold millions and millions of tickets. He's made up to 20, 30 million with his performances in the USA. However, Britain has said enough. We're not doing this. We don't want this as a society. We don't want this as a culture. We don't want you here in Britain spreading hate. hate. They're worried about a lot of things. They're worried about riots. They're worried about Nazis coming out. There are neo-Nazis in Britain and they are worried that they could demonstrate, they could rally around Kanye. They don't think it will be safe for people inside the concert. There are thousands of people there. A lot of people who did not buy tickets to see Kanye, but the other people on the bill. It was a festival. And so they were scared that if I bought ticket for X artist and then Kanye came and started spreading hate and what's that crowd going to do? Are they going to dance? Are they going to riot? It is all so toxic. It is all so dangerous that the Brits have said absolutely not. I've got a new report today on my sub-second exclusive about Kim's reaction to this. Kim knows who Kanye is, however. He is the father of her children. And that's where her focus is. And this is heartbreaking, heartbreaking to Kim, because her kids will see this. I hope her kids are not punished for their father's sins. But they have the last name West. When these kids get a little older, they will always be Kanye's kids. And this is a man who is so dangerous. He's been banned from a country. Banned. Think about that for a minute. We don't want you here. We don't want you here spreading hate. It has been said loud and clear. And now that Britain has been brave enough to do this, other countries will follow other European countries other countries around the world Kanye not going to go anywhere He has severe mental health issues that he talked about He has said some of the most appalling things I ever heard a public person ever ever say But he still does have some fans. And that's what's so interesting about this new world that we live in. You can be very successful with a micro audience. Gone are the days of broadcasting. Gone are the days where we all listened to the same artist. We all watched the same movie. We all read the same book. We all watch the same TV show now. No, no, that doesn't exist anymore. I have friends who talk about TV shows I've never heard about. I have pals who are listening to music. I've never heard of that artist. It's all now about you curating, you editing your own experiences. Thanks to the online revolution, we now decide what we want to see, when we want to see it, how we want to see it. This person makes me laugh. You've never heard of them. That person makes you laugh. I've never heard of them. We all have our own individual experience and I think it's because we have our individual screens now, our phones. We're not watching a television, five, six of us, two, three of us sitting around watching the same show. We're all watching it individually, often on our headsets, always when we're with our phones and so it has changed the world. It has changed the world now. So you can be successful. You can be with a very small, loyal audience who are willing to pay and that's what Kanye has got. Unfortunately, I don't think the audience is small enough. It's still a large audience. He has. But it is nothing where nowhere near what he used to have. So decent people have walked away from Kanye. However, a lot of people have not. They still enjoy his music. They know who he is. And they have decided they are able to put that to one side. They're not going to focus on that. They're just going to focus on the music, which brings us to our poll question of the day. Kanye has been banned from the UK. Can you still enjoy Kanye's music. Can you separate the artist from the person? Can you support somebody who you know is really evil? What do you think? It's a tricky one, isn't it? Yes or no. With Kanye, I think the answer hopefully is a little bit clearer, but it does get fuzzy. Michael Jackson, accused of horrific crimes, children, horrific, horrific, unspeakable crimes. He was never found guilty. But can you still enjoy my call. It's a really fascinating debate. What do you think? Can you separate Kanye from his music? Hey, go vote. On our Twitter page, add Naughty Nice Rob. Our Facebook page is Naughty Gossip. And be sure to check back tomorrow to hear your results. OK, moving along, Savannah Guffrey has returned to the Today Show, and our friends at Page Six, Mara, who's a fabulous reporter, is revealing that there were some strict orders from her co-host to her co-host from the network. They didn't want the show to be about Nancy Guthrie. They wanted business as usual. So on camera, it was smooth. It was polished. Off camera, lots of tears, lots of hugs. Savannah said it's good to be home. She was very calm, really, really poised throughout the broadcast. I think this was a good, good suggestion, that they didn't want the on-air anchors to say, oh, Savannah, I'm so sorry, and then they did a cooking segment. or, oh, Savannah, your news is just so heartbreaking. I love you. And then do a fashion segment. They didn't do that. They addressed the ugly situation right at the top of the show. And then they moved on with business as usual. That's tricky, isn't it? Because business will never be usual for Savannah ever, ever again. I have a new report today on my sub stack breaking this morning that it's not just the anchors. It's actually everybody at NBC. Everybody at NBC has been told to give Savannah some space. She is like a beetle. She is like Taylor Swift at the moment. When she walks into the third floor, their offices are on the third floor. When she gets in the elevator and goes to that third floor, everybody in the elevator, everybody in the hallway, everybody in the lobby wants to stop her and hug her. It's natural. It's beautiful. It is kind. However, this is a place of work. And so staff have been told, not just anchors, page six are reporting, it's the anchors. as my reporting, is pretty much everybody in the building has been told, be kind, be nice, but give her space. They don't want people rushing into the elevator to talk to her, to hug her. They don't want people chasing her down hallways to take selfies. And so this is a very, very delicate moment. I think she's handling it just beautifully. And I think the staff are handling it beautifully well. They're good people over there. They're not as close as they all pretend to be. That big one happy family is not really the reality of any job, Not just TV, but any job. When you think about it where you work, you might all think you're one big family until somebody leaves and you don't see them again. I used to work in a PR office and the office next to me was my pal Susan. I loved Susan. We got lunch together pretty much every day. We got coffee together maybe at four o'clock every day. And when I left, I stopped seeing her. We still sort of occasionally text for a while, but that has sort of dribbled out too. And so if you'd asked me during that moment, I would have said Susan is family. but it's just not true. It's just not true. There's a difference, isn't there, between work colleagues and family That could be blurred relatives or family by choice Give Savannah some space This story is exploding and I can get enough of it Sir Howard Stern has been hit with a lawsuit by an ex-aid claiming that there was a hostile workplace. Sir Howard is facing explosive claims from a former insider who is saying working for the Radio King was intensely personal and bizarre at times and they had a lot of rules. Let me name her. So ex-assistant Leslie Kahn alleges that she was forced into sweeping NDAs covering everything from the couple's eating habits, what restaurants they went to, to where they would travel, to their hobbies and even political views. Everything was off limits. I don't think that's that unusual. I know people that work for big celebrities and they all sign NDAs and you're not allowed to go out with your friends or to a bar and tell secrets. You're not allowed to tell about political arguments, disagreements, discussions you've heard in the house. If they like to go to certain restaurants, they don't want that leet to the press and their travel schedules. They want to keep that private too. So I don't think this is actually as bizarre as people are saying. So the lawsuit, though, does paint a picture of a very high pressured household. I'm assuming it would be he's worth millions and millions of dollars. And she said that she did oversee Beth Stern. That's Howard's wife. Animal rescue operation. Beth has done hero's work for animals. She really has. I've met her several times. She's a great person. I even know people who have adopted animals because of Beth. But all that ended and the staffer was abruptly fired. fired. And then she claims that she was owed some bonuses, a raise. Howard, Beth, give her the bonus, give her the raise and walk away. This isn't worth the fight. It sounds to me like a disgruntled employee. I'm not sure the work environment is hostile. I know people who work for Howard, who know Beth. They're really nice. They're all business. They do not play. You're not friends with him. I know people who have worked on the Howard show for years. They really like him, but they're not his friend. In fact, some of them don't even have his phone number. They do the job. Howard and Beth have their own friends. They don't want staff being friends. They separate work from pleasure and that's why he is one of the most successful media people in the world. He knows how to do the job. He turns up. He's focused. He does a great job and then he goes home to his beautiful wife, his beautiful family, all his animals and has a lovely life. There's no shame in that. There's nothing wrong with that. And I also think too, in this world that we live in of the Bethany Frankels and the TikTok stars, and people who are coming at us all day, all day long in our social media feeds. It's really refreshing to find an old school celebrity like Howard who wants some privacy. He said, I do my job. I'm public for three, four hours a day. But then I'm private. This is my private life. I've never, ever had that level of fame myself. I've been around people who are that famous. but it often makes me wonder, where is that line between public and private? I get it. I like my private life. I like being with Bruce. There's nobody, there's nothing I would rather do than just get dinner with Bruce. I've got a big, big party and some events coming up to celebrate my book, which I'm thrilled about. But let me be honest, I can tell you a little secret here. I'd rather just have dinner with Bruce. Shh! Now, if you're coming to the book events, please come. I'm not discouraging you from coming. I don't want to shoot myself in my foot here. I am so grateful. But I'm not a natural party animal. I'm good with my inner circle. When I have drinks with Misty or Donny, Garrett, Corey or a fave Loopy Lou, when I have drinks with them, I am a lot. And I talk a lot and I laugh a lot. But when I'm with people I don't really know, it does not have to be the Rob Shooter show every minute of every day. Okay, quickly before we go to break, Chloe Fineman, who's on SNL, is under fire and so is Vanity Fair for posting this really bizarre story of her. So Chloe is facing some serious backlash after a jaw-dropping confession surfaced and it's not landing as comedy. The SNL star revealed to Vanity Fair, she was in a video, that she was fired as a teen counsellor at a camp after she pulled down a young camper's pants as paycheck. And the story has blown up online. Some people are saying it's child abuse and exposing someone's genitals to get a laugh or to be cruel or to have payback is disgusting. Well, Vanity Fair now is in damage control and they have trimmed that video. I've noticed that video has been trimmed. Not funny. Cruel. Almost abusive. What are you doing? Asking somebody what was their worst job, what's a funny thing that's happened at work is a great question. I often ask it to celebrities, to friends. I often talk about it myself. I've had some really wacky, really fun jobs when I was just starting out. And that's funny. It's really great. However, this is abuse and sexual and pulling down someone's pants. Not funny. Ooh, really creepy. OK we going to take a quick break and we will be right back Welcome back to the Naughty But Nice Show I your host Rob Shooter Hey Naughties Let get to the polls Da da da Last show we talked about Savannah emotional return to the Today Show and asked, is it too soon? She kept a brave face, but behind the scenes, lots of tears. Is it too soon? 60% said yes. I think I agree. I'm not sure I would be back this quickly. I'm not sure I could do that every morning with so much going on in my private, private life. We're sending you our best. Hey, don't forget to vote on today's poll. Go to our Twitter page, our Naughty Nice Rob. Our Facebook page is Naughty Gossip. And be sure to check back tomorrow to hear your results. And now it's time for our nicest of the day. Our nicest of the day is Anna Wintour, who's on the cover of Vogue with Meryl Streep. So if you remember when the first Devil Wears Prada came out, it's about Anna Wintour, Miranda Priestly, in the movie is Anna Wintour. Anna kept her distance. Didn't support it. Didn't want much to do with it. Well, now, all those years later and the sequel's coming out, Anna is fully in. She presented at the Oscars and now she's promoting it on the cover of Vogue magazine. I hear the movie is a lot of fun. Maybe not as good as the original, but still a lot of fun and it's delicious to see all these characters that we love again. So I'm excited for it. Its premiere is in just a couple of weeks. I've been invited to the premiere here in New York, so I'll tell you all about it. But it is interesting, isn't it? What once was something you didn't like? Has this happened to you? Something that was embarrassing, something that you did not want out there, became an asset. The Devil Wears Prada turned Anna Wintour into a superstar. She was always known in the fashion business, always in the magazine business, in the publishing business, media business. But she was not known to people like my mum and dad. My family, my sister would never have heard of Anna Wintour. But now they have because of Miranda Priestly. And so be careful. Take a minute. When something happens and you don't think you like it, hold your nose just for a second and think, how will this play out? Because what might seem as a disadvantage and embarrassment could become something that is great. You never know. And our naughtiest of the day. Naughty, naughty, naughty. GMA has fired Johnny Norman, and they didn't even let her say goodbye. So she's been at GMA and ABC for 15 years. And she said, it breaks my heart that I didn't get to say a proper goodbye. Her contract was not renewed. But once the news was leaked, it leaked out. She was abruptly pulled off the air. She took to social media, really upset. This was her dream job. It just goes back to what we were saying earlier. They're not family. These jobs, be careful what you give them. because they don't always care about you as much as you care about them. Heartbreaking, she didn't even get a chance to say goodbye. Shame on you, ABC. OK, let's end with a moment of rub. You get a rub, you get a rub, you get a rub. Time flies, so take the controls. The bad news is that time flies. The good news is you decide where you fly to. Every day is moving forward, whether you act or not. So choose direction, not drift. You don't need a perfect plan. You need intention. Small steps, repeated daily, will take you further than bursts of motivation than they ever could. Stay focused, stay consistent, and keep going. Because while time won't slow down for you, it will reward you if you are brave enough to steer it. Once again, the bad news is time flies. Yes, the good news is you get to decide where you fly to. Where are you going to fly to today, Noughties? I hope it's somewhere happy. Hey, that is it for today. Thank you so much for listening to the Naughty But Nice with Rob and Noughtie Show.
