Summary

Bryce Crawford analyzes Luke Chapter 13, focusing on Jesus's teachings about repentance, spiritual fruit-bearing, and the narrow gate to salvation. The episode emphasizes the importance of turning from sin, the growth of God's kingdom, and the urgency of accepting God's grace before it's too late.

Insights
  • True faith requires active obedience and repentance, not merely intellectual belief—even demons believe but lack submission to God
  • Spiritual growth mirrors agricultural metaphors: the kingdom starts small (mustard seed) but spreads exponentially when properly cultivated
  • Grace is a present-day empowerment tool for transformation, not a future guarantee; the window for choosing God closes at death or judgment
  • Religious rule-following without compassion represents spiritual hypocrisy; Jesus prioritizes human healing over ceremonial law observance
  • The 'narrow gate' concept suggests salvation requires deliberate, sustained commitment rather than passive cultural Christianity

I ought to yell at you. You go, hey, give it to me. Thank you so much for this megaphone. That was super kind. You are so thoughtful, Elf Dylan. Give it up for Elf. Finally, we just love you. Thank you. Well, as always, we're going to be reading in the Word of God today. It's going to be great and it's going to be amazing. We're going to be in Luke chapter 13. This is there were some present at that very time. We told him about the Galileans whose blood pilot had mingled with their sacrifices and he answered. Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered in this way? No, I tell you, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. And then he reiterates himself again in verse five. Unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. He reiterates himself and says it's very clear. You got a term from your ways. You can't keep living the same. It's time to stop living for yourself. We're not just mouth breathers that say, oh, Jesus, I believe in you and then I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing. We don't abuse greats like Paul writes in Romans. What makes you different than the demons? Even the demons believe it's your obedience that makes you different. Your willingness to turn from your old ways and submit yourself to God. Then he told a parable. A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. And he said to the vine dresser, look for three years now. I've come seeking fruit on this fig tree and I find none. Cut it down. Why should it use up the ground? And he answered him, sir, let alone this year. Let it alone this year also until I dig around it and put on man year. Then if it should bear fruit next year, well and good. But if not, you can cut it down. Jesus is checking for fruit. He's checking for fruit in your life. And the evidence of the Holy Spirit in your life is that you're walking out of statutes. Now the Bible says the righteous man falls seven times. That's not an excuse to sin. But notice that the righteous man falls seven times and gets back up. Okay. If you're someone who's in a season of drought and a season of struggle and this is your sign to get back up. Let the grace of God empower you to keep moving forward. Verse 10, Now he was teaching in one of the synagogues in the Sabbath and behold, there was a woman who had a disabling spirit of 18 years. She was bent over and could not fully straighten herself. When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said to her woman, you are freed from your disability. And he laid his hands on her and immediately she was made straight and she glorified God. But the ruler of the synagogue indicated that because Jesus healed her on the Sabbath, he had healed on the Sabbath. He said to the people, there are six days in which work ought to be done. Come on those days and be healed and not on the Sabbath day. And Jesus goes, you hypocrite, if your ox or donkey went from the manger to the water, would you not go get it? Would you not untie your ox and take it to the water? Isn't that work? And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham who's Satan bound for 18 years, be loose from this bond on the Sabbath. You know, what's so crazy is that they're getting angry at Jesus for healing this woman. But the first time in 18 years, she was able to experience rest and not only physically, but spiritually and emotionally. Jesus met her. Verse 18 says, What is the kingdom of God like and what shall I compare it to? It's like the grain of a mustard seed that a man took in sotr in his garden. Isn't that crazy? And it grew and became a tree and the birds of the air made nests in its brass. You know how small a mustard seed is? It's so tiny. You know what the kingdom of God is like a mustard seed, but it's not just that tiny seed. It's one that was planted and it grew and it flourished. And he says, To what shall I compare the kingdom of God? It's like 11. That a woman took and hid in three measures of flour until it was 11. Not the sour part of loving, but the fact that it spreads. The kingdom of heaven is spreading like a wildfire. And then he says in verse 23, Some said to him, Lord, will those who are saved be few? And he said, Strive to enter through the narrow gate. For many, I tell you will seek to enter and will not be able to. Once the master of the house has risen and shut the door and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door saying, Lord, open to us and he will answer to you. I do not know where you come from. Then you will begin to say, We ate and drank in your presence and I taught you in our streets. But he will say, I tell you, I do not know where you come from. Depart from me all you workers of evil. And in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. When you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves cast out. And people will come from East and West and from North and South and recline at the table in the kingdom of God and behold, some are last who will be first and some who are first will be last. You know, it's so interesting. This reminds me of Noah. You know, everyone thought he was crazy building an ark that God was going to flood the earth. But then when the doors are shut, everyone's banging on the doors. Let us in, let us in. It's too late. It's too late. In the same way you and I don't just get to decide to believe in God and put our trust in him when we stand before him. And we're going to stand before God one day and it's going to be the most real, magnificent, beautiful thing we've ever seen. It's in that moment that we're going to be judged where we stand. The grace of God allows us to, the grace of God empowers us to turn away from our sin. It allows us in this lifetime to choose him or not. This last verse is 31 through 35. Jesus is lamenting over Jerusalem. You know, he says, go and tell that fox. Go and tell that fox, labing them as cunning but weak. I cast out demons and perform curous today and tomorrow and the third day. I finished my course. Nevertheless, I must go on my way today and tomorrow and the day following for it cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem. I love what he says in verse 34. How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings and you were not willing? Your house is forsaken and I tell you you will not see me until today. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. He's lamenting over the fact that he's done so many miracles there. They have not turned to him.
