So tell us a story. Yeah, so I'm a junior at Louisiana State University, and we had a final paper for my English class, which I wrote and turned in. And then about a month later, I went and checked, and it said that I had an I next to my grade, which means that it was incomplete. So I emailed my teacher, and I asked her, I was like, hey, why do I have an incomplete next to my grade? and she said that my paper was flagged for AI and that she had submitted it to SAA here for a review. What really, you know, peeved me was that I wasn't even notified by my teacher that I was reported for AI. It just happened and, yeah, just a very unfortunate, sticky situation. So, now, did you use AI? I did not Okay wow What were the signs that the checker came back with and said oh this is totally AI Yeah, so funny enough, this was a paper where we had to cite, I think, five sources in the paper. The majority of what the AI flagged was actually my cited sources, which I had in MLA format, which I thought was funny. And then it cited the title of my essay. and then I think like two other paragraphs. But the paragraphs that it detected, there was like a pie chart for the detection level for AI, the lightest colored purple being the least amount of AI detected and then darker purple is like the most. Everything else that was detected for AI was like the lightest shade of purple. But because it was detected by AI, like it flagged it. So you're telling me that they said your paper is incomplete because you used AI and they used AI to determine that you used AI. Yeah, I think that's really the big issue. And I'm not the only one here that's dealt with these issues. It's a nationwide thing right now, especially with Turnitin, which is the software that they're using to detect it. I don't know if you all know this, but Turnitin actually recently reported the Declaration of Independence for AI. Oh, but that's accurate. Yes. Right. So now, so when this happened and it got flagged, what were the repercussions for that? I mean, did you have to do the paper again? Yeah. So what, unfortunately, because I was, you know, I heard about this so late about my grade being incomplete, I wasn't able to redo the paper, and I had to do a case with a caseworker. So I had to kind of fight my case as to why, if I use AI or not. And the person handling my case, one, there was sort of a language barrier there where she couldn't speak English very well. And you would have thought she just learned about computers the week prior. She didn really know what she was looking at And you know I tell people this and I say it the equivalent to bringing your dog to the veterinarian clinic for a surgery And you have a blue collar electrician come out with scrubs about to do the surgery on your dog right It the same thing Did you lose your appeal? So yeah, I lost it. There was nothing I could do. They said that, you know, they're going to let me know in a couple of days, but like there really wasn't anything that I could do to like prove whether or not I used it or not. So like the end all be all of evidence was just their turn it in AI checker saying that I was flagged for AI and I received a zero on the paper. So now do you think that's going to hurt your chances to like let's say you wanted to go to law school or something? I mean is this going to always be on your record? So no. Unfortunately it won't and I'm lucky enough I'm in construction management so I'm not going to law school or anything. But that, you know, that's just my story. There are some people here who are at risk of losing their scholarships or, you know, it might affect, you know, their chances of getting into law school if this isn't fixed soon. So, gosh, this has to make you nervous about turning in another paper. 100 percent. Everything I write now, I go and I check through multiple AI checkers to make sure that there is not even a chance that anything will be detected. Wow. I would say do the whole paper in crayon and turn it in that way yeah right i think that's i think that would be the best one can't check it red crayon no blue blue crayon both go back and forth you know isn't that isn't that so erin thank you for your call today isn't that amazing well it's not surprising i mean we talk about ai hallucinations all the time i mean we had the story on the show a couple weeks ago where ai identified a man at a casino he got arrested and held in jail and it was 100 percent wrong when the AI was saying it was 100 percent right. Yeah, I know. That's just a, that was a complete nightmare. Hey, want to stay in the tech now without wasting your time?
