•Mar 31, 202619 days agoSummary
This episode explores the osteoarthritis epidemic affecting 600+ million people globally and examines regenerative medicine as a solution. Dr. Adam Brockman interviews Grant Townsend, CEO of NuvaCell Biologics, discussing how exosome therapy and stem cell science offer alternatives to traditional pain management and joint replacement surgery.
Insights
- Osteoarthritis cases have increased 150% in two decades with projections exceeding 750 million cases, driven by sedentary lifestyles, poor diet, and metabolic inflammation rather than age alone
- Exosomes function as cellular communication signals that modulate inflammation and trigger regeneration at the cellular level, offering a mechanistic alternative to masking pain symptoms
- Regenerative medicine requires integration with lifestyle interventions (nutrition, movement, metabolic balance) to achieve sustainable outcomes; technology alone cannot bypass fundamental health principles
- Women experience disproportionate osteoarthritis burden (60% of cases) due to hormonal fluctuations and fat tissue inflammation, making targeted regenerative approaches particularly valuable
- Topical exosome delivery reduces barriers to regenerative medicine access by eliminating invasive procedures, cryo-freezing logistics, and high costs associated with injectable stem cell therapies

Welcome to the Dr. Bob Martin show, your weekly dose of truth, transformation and empowerment in health. I'm Dr. Adam Brockman, your executive producer and co-host. And folks, today we're going to talk about a topic that could redefine the future of joint health. And honestly, the way we think about aging altogether. Now, before we unpack this, I want you to jot this down because health conversation shouldn't end when the show goes off air. Our listener line is toll free at 800-606-8822. Again, that's 800-606-8822. If you've got a story, a question or a suggestion, that's your direct connection to the show. Again, that's drbob.com or calling us at 800-606-8822. All right. Now, let's warm up with a question. And this might just catch you a little bit off guard. Would you believe me if I told you that over 600 million people worldwide, that's 600 million, that's nearly twice the population of the United States are now living with osteoarthritis? That's right. 607 million to be exact. And that's climbing fast. In fact, cases of osteoarthritis have exploded by almost 150% in just the past two decades. And here's the jaw dropper. Experts are projecting that the number could smash past 750 million within a few short years. Now, that's not a trend. That's an epidemic. And it's not just about the elderly. It's also our 40-something year olds, our young athletes, our office warriors that are glued to keyboards 10 hours a day. And this isn't your grandfather's arthritis anymore. It's a modern plague that's fueled by lifestyle, diet, and disconnection from our body's natural design. So today, I want you to have a heart-to-heart talk about what this means for you, your loved ones, and even your peers. Because behind those numbers is a message, a warning, and thankfully an emerging solution that gives me and should give you some hope. And that's more than anything that I've seen in the last few years. And while we're talking about the rise of osteoarthritis, there's also a surge of regentive medicine. And I know you've heard us talk about that word on the show before, but I want you to think about it. We've created this society where we live longer than ever, right? But we move less than ever. And that's a perfect storm. We got aging and obesity. We got inflammation in our body. And then we have the sedentary lifestyle. And it's colliding right now. And it's reshaping not only our health, but also our healthcare systems. So every practitioner, every functional medicine practitioner or medical doctor or chiropractor or naturopath, every forward-thinking provider listening, you're standing at the front lines of this storm. You're seeing it firsthand. You have patients that are limping into your clinics. And quite frankly, they're fed up. They're frustrated. They're told that they need surgery or they need lifelong medications. When deep down, they sense that there's got to be a better way. And they're right. There is. We got traditional medicine has done wonders in trauma care and emergency situations. There's no doubt about that. But when it comes to chronic joint degeneration, the toolbox has gotten dusty, if you will. We got pain medicine, steroid injections, joint replacements. These are band-aids on a building that's crumbling from within. And most patients aren't looking for a patch job anymore. They're craving regeneration, something that restores and not just relieves. And that's exactly what regenerative medicine is. And that's how it shines. And it's not wishful thinking. It's not science fiction. It's this revolution that's quietly transforming how we treat osteoarthritis. We're talking about the body's ability to heal itself. A concept that's as old as biology itself, but is being reborn through cutting-edge science. And before we start to climb that mountain, let's look at the landscape that we're standing on. One of the most overlooked drivers of osteoarthritis, and I can't stress this enough, is metabolism. Studies show a skyrocketing over 200% increase in osteoarthritis that's linked to high BMI. That's your body mass index. And that's not just extra weight. That's metabolic inflammation that's stealing mobility. And it's stealing it years ahead of schedule. We also learned that it's not just about how much weight, but what kind of weight. If you have too much fat mass and too little lean muscle tissue. And that's where movement-based practitioners have this incredible opportunity. Through alignment and muscle activation in lifestyle coaching, practitioners can intervene where a lot of healthcare hasn't even looked. And then we throw in another curveball. And that's gender. About 60% of osteoarthritis patients are women. And that statistic, it should make us pause for a second, because we're talking about hormonal changes and biomechanical differences. And sometimes even women have these slower diagnosis. And women face a uniquely steep hill in joint health. But guess what? They often respond beautifully to regent of strategies that are tailored around those physiological differences and realities. Now, perhaps the most sobering and motivating fact is that early onset arthritis, that it's skyrocketing. We're talking about the people in their 30s, the construction workers, the athletes, the moms that are training for marathons. And we're now struggling with what used to be known as 60-year-old disease, right? These are people that are still raising their families and they're still in the prime of their careers. But they're sidelined by pain that medicine calls manageable but never reversible. And that simply may not be true. And why? Part of this is because of the lifestyle load. We have too much sitting and too much sugar and too little recovery. Joints are screaming long before the x-rays are showing the damage. And then you got by the time traditional medicine steps in, it's often maybe too late for prevention. And but again, here's the exciting piece in the reason regent of medicine is no longer optional, but it's an essential part of healthcare. We're witnessing a leap in understanding. Instead of replacing joints with metal and plastic, we're learning how to restore them through using the body's own cells. We have mesenchymal stem cells, for example. They have an extraordinary ability to morph into cartilage, bone, or connective tissue, all while calming inflammation and modulating immune responses that drive degeneration in the first place. And that's not talking about masking pain. It's about rewriting that body's repair script through these signals, the body's internal language of healing, stem cells orchestrate repair at a cellular level. And it reduces inflammation and it rebuilds tissue and it improves the joint function naturally. Then the results, they're hard to ignore. Patients walk out with less pain and improved mobility and most importantly, hope. And hope that doesn't come from a bottle or a scalpel. Now let's take a step back and talk about reality because here's what's broken and why people are searching for the alternatives. Too many people, they end up with what is a treadmill. It starts with mild inflammation, anti-inflammatories and progresses to stronger painkillers. And then it comes steroid injections and before long, the joint is declared beyond repair. And the next step is surgery and rehab and more painkillers and more side effects. It's this vicious cycle that never gets to the root of inflammation that's causing the damage. And the good news is that millions of people are waking up to this reality and saying enough. They're looking for longevity and not dependency. And these regentive therapies, PRP, stem cells, peptide-based activation, they're leading that charge. All right, folks, I want you to remember that you have the power, you have the biology, and you have a platform to learn, heal, and thrive. I'm Dr. Adam Brockman and this is the Dr. Bob Marden Show. I want you to stick around. We're just getting started. And again, you can call us at 800-606-8822 and join in the conversation also at DrBob.com. We'll be right back with a special guest. And if you've got questions today, I want you to give, go ahead and chime in. You can give us a call at 800-606-8822. Again, that's 800-606-8822. All right. So today, again, I have the pleasure of sitting down with Grant Townsend. He is the CEO and founder of NuvaCell Biologics. And that's a company that is pioneering these new frontiers in biological and stem cell innovation. And as we talked about in that first segment, with the global rates of osteoarthritis surging to these unprecedented levels, NuvaCell is at the forefront of regentive medicine. And they are developing the solutions that help activate the body's innate healing capacity and also reverse that degenerative changes within the body. And so I asked Grant to come on the show today because we want to discuss in greater detail a recently published article that I wrote. It's called The Rise of Osteoarthritis in the Surge of Regentive Medicine. And I want to tie this into how health practitioners, what they need to know about regentive medicine, how they can implement in their practices. And so in this article, I discussed this huge rise in joint degeneration in the surge of these regentive technologies that I feel offer hope where conventional therapies have often fallen short. So today, Grant and I, we're going to explore how these breakthroughs are transforming care across many health disciplines. And that's from physicians and naturopaths to physical therapists and integrative clinicians. So with that, I want to welcome Grant back to the Dr. Bob Martin show. How you doing today, Grant? Hey, Dr. Bartman, I'm doing well. Hope you are too. Happy to be back here on the show and talking to the audience and share a little bit more about NuvaCell. Well, this is such an important topic and we, Dr. Bob and I, we've field many questions on osteoarthritis and arthritis, how people can continue to move better. And in a sense, longevity is a topic of conversation now. So Grant, so NuvaCell Biologics has been leading innovation in regentive medicine. And so I want you to just kind of go through what inspired your company to focus on exosomes, part of those stem cells, the research behind it, and how does that relate to cellular healing? Yeah, definitely. The focus on exosome really came from stems from our company mission. And our company mission is to make regentive medicine more accessible and more well-known to the public. So in the past, accessibility has been a big hurdle for regentive medicine. Typically, regentive medicine modalities like stem cell injections, PRP, they're done through injectables that require a procedure, they require a medical doctor to do the injection. There's a lot of strict compliance and processing between that, because you are to get the injectable rate. So your patients were paying, you know, can pay anywhere upwards of five, 10, 15,000 dollars per injection. Obviously, anytime you're doing an injection into an injury site, it's not the ideal scenario. So that's where, you know, that's that was where the mission of NubiCell is born is, is for my own field, back surgery experience, how can we make this amazing technology more accessible? And when you look at, when you really start to dive into the science of how regentive medicine works and stem cell science works, a lot of the science points to exosome being the main mechanism of action behind stem cell science. And what exosomes are, they're basically, you know, nanoscale vesicles that a stem cell secretes to deliver messages to neighboring damaged cells. So it's basically a set of cell signals. So by focusing on that exosome, the cool thing about it is because it's cell-free, because it's a protein, it's much easier to stabilize. And because how small it is, you can deliver it in many different ways, like through a topical and our product. So, you know, that's, that's really why we focused on, on exosome two parts, one because of the, how you can stabilize and deliver, but to manufacturability as well. There's, you know, lower risk factors because it's cell-free. You're basically just taking proteins from donated bilkwood core tissue, like our product. And then because of the size, you can encase it and look at nanoparticles like we do with our product and drive it through the skin. And then, you know, the really fascinating part is stem cell regentive medicine. It's so new, and there's so much research coming out about it. And a lot of the research pointing to why and how regentive medicine works, there's a lot of focus on what they call the paracrine effect, which is how exosomes are released from the stem cell when signal, that neighboring cells around there to, you know, wake up out of cellular senescence and start regenerating again. Yeah. And that's, that's how I like to explain exosomes. They act like text messages between the cells and it carries those, those critical, those crucial biochemical instructions that regulate things like inflammation. They stimulate repair and they guide that regeneration. And, and by optimizing these signals, it helps to assist the body in doing what it was designed to do. And that's restore that balance and rebuild itself. So this, this concept of cellular conversation, if you will, Grant, it's huge, you know, for practitioners across all health disciplines, it starts to reframe disease, not as a, as a failure of the structure, but as a communication breakdown at that cellular level. So, so what, what this does, you know, you know, products like NuvaCell, they restore that dialogue. And that's where modern biology starts to meet that, that natural healing wisdom. So, Grant, I want to, I want to talk more about a recent pilot study that showed promising results using topical exosome therapy in patients with osteoarthritis. So, so how has NuvaCell advanced this concept into real world application? Yeah, the, the, the main mode that we're advancing this and how, and how we're growing the NuvaCell community, as we call it is, is through our healthcare providers. So, you know, as a company, we make the conscious decision to only sell to healthcare providers because of the complexity in our product, right? It's not a, you know, it's not a bengay or a buyer freeze or something like that that you can just put on and, you know, if, hey, the pain, the pain goes away, there, there, you know, there's a little bit of understanding that needs to be done to, you know, understand the patient, what they're dealing with, what the root cause is, how to address it properly, to make sure that everything is going to work. So, you know, what we're, what we do, we have a, for example, we have a case study program through our provider network where providers can enlist in that and then conduct independent case studies on our patient base with our product because the, the fact that you mentioned driving, driving this research, driving this clinical data is very important. And it's something that the regenerative medicine industry is, is, is lacking as a, as a whole, right? So that's, it's something we're, we're very focused on, you know, hopefully, in the future, maybe in a year or two from now, we plan to do some water scale, you know, clinical studies once, once we have the means to. But as of now, that's, that's the main way that we're, we're driving this home and expanding on the initial research that's, that's out there, that's showing a lot of promise. And you, you touched on an important point that, that the reason that you do this through a provider network is because the complexity. So I just, just briefly, we're gonna hit, head to a break in just about a minute, but I want you to explain that difference again between that, that Ben gay type of over the counter medicine and why this topical is so important with these exosome, these, these stem cells in it, in the product, there's, there's a huge difference here. Yeah. So obviously the big difference is with our product, we're attacking the root cause of dysfunction, right? As opposed to masking pain or putting a bandaid over the pain. So when you attack the root function and you actually want to regenerate the cartilage or the tendon or, or whatever is, is wrong in the area and causing the inflammation and causing the pain, you have to have the environment and the right state to be able to regenerate. While that's what our product was designed to do is, is, is deliver the cell signals to allow that, you know, damage cartilage to regenerate. You still need to have, you know, you still need to have, whether it's patients who have a high A what C, or maybe have a diet imbalance, or there's, there's a lot of other things you got to look out for to make sure that the environment is primed and ready to regenerate. And let's come back to that after, after the break. So for practitioners from physical therapists to integrative physicians, this means regenerative opportunities without those, those barriers of invasive procedures, these topical applications as in new Vasell bridge that gap between advanced science and everyday clinical practice. We'll be right back with Grant Townsend of new Vasell biologics. You're listening to the Dr. Bob Martin show. Welcome back. You're tuned into the Dr. Bob Martin show. I'm Dr. Adam Brockman, your co-pilot on this journey to better health. And before we get back into our conversation with Grant Townsend of new Vasell biologics, here's a reminder to stay connected with us. And if you've got pressing health questions, you can always give us a call at 800-606-8822. That's 800-606-8822. All right, let's get back in our conversation with Grant Townsend of new Vasell biologics today. And if you're curious for more information, if you're a practitioner or you're a listener wanting wanting some relief from osteoarthritis or to move better, I encourage you to visit their website at newvasellbiologics.com that's spelled N-U-V-O-C-E-L-L biologics.com. All right, so Grant, in my research, obesity in systemic inflammation, they emerge as primary accelerators for osteoarthritis. So I want you to tell our listeners and other practitioners they're listening as well. How does regent of biologics like new Vasell break that inflammatory loop? Yeah, so the main mechanism of actually when you look at inflammation in regards to biologics is for exosomes, particularly exosomes deliver what we call or are called cytokines. Cytokines are basically inflammatory modulation proteins, right? It's the body's natural way and how you modulate inflammation. And modulation is the key word there because inflammation can be good and bad, right? There's good information, there's bad information. Too much information is going to cause disrupt the healing cycle and cause pain. No inflammation at all is not going to is not allow the body to deliver the proper proteins to the damage site it needs to heal. So the key there is proper information and that's really where biologics really shine. Because we're using a natural substance from invocal core tissue, donated vocal core tissue, these exosomes have a very natural way to release the right amount of cytokines because there's hundreds of different types of cytokines that can modulate inflammation to be able to regulate that inflammation. So and we'll often hear from patients when you're starting a new Vasell for example, sometimes there may be an initial inflammation response, right? And that's a good thing. That's the body working. But ultimately what we're after is that modulation. So that's how the mechanism of action works. In fact, you're point on osteoarthritis, the rise of osteoarthritis being caused by inflammation, obesity. It's like a never-ending cycle, right? Because as you introduce more inflammation to the area, it's going to degrade cartilage fasher, which is going to narrow the joint space and then cause more inflammation, which has been going to degrade the cartilage even faster. So it's a compounding effect that can be very, that can have a lot of very poor results for people who are trying to get out of that state. Yeah. And again, I like to explain that exosomes, they can modulate that immune system by basically down regulating those inflammatory molecules and that it promotes those repair signals. So still, those long-term outcomes, like Grant was saying, rely on a comprehensive lifestyle intervention. So we're talking about nutritional care, we're talking about physical movement in that metabolic balance. So regenerative medicine, it amplifies these interventions, but lifestyle still remains that cornerstone. So with this, practitioners, the integration is key. Regeneration doesn't replace the functional medicine, it enhances it. So every practitioner, this reminds us that the technology cannot bypass the fundamentals of human health and that nutrition, that movement, that balance. So Grant, you touched on something I want to talk about a little bit further and that is how some of these exosomes are harvested. These are from healthy births where a lot of times that you're asked, if you've had a child in the last 20 years, they ask you, do you want to bank the cord blood? And this is essentially what's taking place. If you decline to bank it yourself, the cord blood is donated in the sense that the technology like this. And so we have some clinicians that are still hesitant to adopt these biological therapies, but they're really missing out on a great option for their patients. So how does NuVaCell ensure that that credibility and that compliance and the safety that we all want to make sure that we're participating in? Yeah, that's a great question. And the credibility and the compliance and traceability is paramount. So to start with how our process works, first of all, we source everything from within the United States, which is I always start to make sure that's very clear. But to your point, when an expecting mother goes into a delivery, either the local court is thrown away or donated. So what are our lab that is within the United States does is they partner with court banks, and they're only sourcing donated in billboard tissue from live C-section deliveries. And the other point about that is it's, you know, it's planned and controlled, right, because it's a C-section delivery. And then they take that in billboard and what we focus on is the orange jelly, which is the gelatinous lining of the billboard. And there's a couple reasons for that. One, mostly because of potency of mesocomal stem cells in that. And they process that, they screen it. They do full testing and pathology reports of the donor as well to make sure there's, you know, nothing to be alarmed about in the donated tissue. And then they screen out the actual full stem cell, keep the exosome itself, you know, do some processes, do some cleaning on that. There's a lot of regulatory guidelines they have to follow for 21 CFR, part of lab at compliance in the PHS act. And then we formulate it into our topical product. And the other neat thing about that is we maintain full traceability back to each donor as well. So, you know, we're pretty strict about that. I know it's important. I know there's a lot of connotation out there too about, you know, where stem cells are harvested from. And we want to make sure, you know, everyone knows that it's, we're doing it the right way. We're doing it ethically. And we maintain all that documentation. Yeah, that quality control, it can't be compromised in any medicine. And in this case, we're talking about regent medicine. So as practitioners, we're bridging that gap between that innovation and the patient. And this is a great option for many listeners out there and practitioners. And so partnering with credible sources and products like NuvaCell ensures that innovation translates into safe and reproducible, you know, the results that we're looking for for patients in practice. And so, you know, as far as practitioners go, the best place to integrate regent medicine responsibly would be to start with that education process. And that's understanding that science, the cell signaling, the inflammation pathways, that tissue recovery, that's all fundamental. So, so with NuvaCell, that they provide this practitioner training programs to help clinicians navigate that science, the ethics and that inflammation of NuvaCell and regent of medicine products. So, so what's beginning is we got this this less invasive in reinforcing this patient education and that can really enhance the patient outcomes. So, Grant, I want to, I want to come back to talk more about about the lifestyle component with this. When we come back, you're listening to the Dr. Bob Martin show. And there's this increasing talk about value-based care in that clinical sustainability. And how does regentive medicine contribute to this both this economic efficiency, if you will, the lower cost for the patients and that patient satisfaction? Yeah, so the main mechanism there is because we've been able to take these exosomes and formulate it into a topical cream, there's one, there's a logistical piece that's completely cut out, right, where you're not having to do an injection procedure, you're not having to schedule. There's obviously costs associated to that, right? So that brings the cost down. And then the other fact is with our product, compared to the injectables, we're able to position our product even at the lower cost of the injectables because we're not having to cryo-freeze it in logistics. We're using a smaller amount of exosome material, but because we're applying a smaller dose of our longer frequency, you're supporting the regenerative state of the joint for a longer period of time, which is why we see results comparable to injectables a lot of the time. So that's the main reason or the main mode behind the economics of it. And then to your point again, the education is paramount. And that's really how we lead with everything at New Viselle is education first, whether we're doing published research articles, case studies, educating our providers, educating the public. There's so much misinformation about regenerative medicine in the market. And being able to educate from a scientific position is something, I believe, is very, very important because we want people to know what this is and what it actually does. And I led this conversation today talking about osteoarthritis in the first segment. And I want to touch on this because this is a question I get quite often. I really want people to understand this. We know that osteoarthritis, it affects more women than men. And I've discussed it before with the hormonal factors play a major role in this. And I want you to talk about how regenerative medicine offers a unique potential for addressing this gender, this female based biological differences. Yeah, so you kind of already mentioned that they're a hormone imbalance. And as estrogen drops, inflammation can increase. So that hormone imbalance can create fluctuations in different modulation effects of inflammation. And as we know, if inflammation increases, osteoarthritis is going to increase. I think there's also some different data on there about fat tissues producing more of the proteins that cause inflammation as well. So women are going to have a little bit of a higher fat content than men as a normal basis. So those are two modes. And then by taking biologics and using the cytokines within the exosomes that can modulate inflammation, you're going to really get a hold and get a control over that inflammation response to get positive outcomes. So the potential for females, I think, is very, very high, maybe even more than a baseline case. And I know personally, from the new result side, we've, you know, majority of we've had quite a few case studies, testimonials from, you know, 60, 70 year old woman who are new replacement candidates and were able to avoid it with with new result, which is very powerful. Yeah, absolutely. And, you know, women, women often experience greater inflammatory load during these hormonal transitions, in particular, you know, menopause. So if we're talking about the exosomal therapy, and what you discussed with the restoring that immune regulation, and it also supports that joint in the connective tissue integrity during these pivotal times in a female's life, especially, you know, during menopause, we know that there may be some some bone loss associated with this. So we want to build up those bone stores. And one of the ways to do that is through is through movement. So for moving better through through options like new Vacell, and it's improving that, you know, decreasing that inflammatory load, improving that support to the joint and connective tissue, it's a it's a win. So, so I know that you've mentioned with the the testimonials, the research has seen very encouraging outcomes when regent of biologics are combined with balanced nutrition in these in these weight bearing exercise programs. So, you know, if we're if we're looking this, this this holistic synergy is exactly what modern health care needs to embrace, you know, we're recognizing that intersection between biology and in lifestyle in this regenerative potential. So for health care professionals, this personalization is no longer, you know, some type of an optional thing, it should be a standard for effective care. We've got a little bit of a little bit of a little I just want to say that we're not necessarily replacement in all cases. So we got, we got new Vesel biologics. They're not just producing these therapies. They're these regenerative therapies. They're reimagining what healing can look like when science in the bodies and Nate intelligence starts to work in unison. So a special, a special thanks to our guests today, Grant Townsend of new Vesel biologics for joining us. Are there any final thoughts that you want to touch on before we go, Grant? Yeah, just just one quick final final thought. I know we're talking to me before the commercial there about the integrator of approach, which I believe is paramount. And that's how that's how we position new Vesel as well. Right? This is a regenerative medicine is in a miracle technology that's going to fix all of your problems. You have to take a holistic view at the body and integrative approach to one, figure out why the issue happened in the first place, address that, fix the issue, and then make sure you change whatever you need to change so that long term you can stay in that healthy state. Right? So you're using new Vesel shockwave therapy, laser therapy, nutritional counseling, you name it. That's how we coach all of our providers as well. It's what I've done in my personal life, recovering from my field back surgery. So I just wanted to hit on that because I think it's something that's overlooked now, but it's becoming more and more well known that you can't just take a drug or you can't get a knee replacement and fix your problems. You have to look how the body works together, gut health and metabolic rates and nutrition and all of that. It affects a lot more than we think. So I'm glad you said that. I just wanted to touch on that before we sign off, but once again, thanks for having me on the show and always good to come here and talk about new cell. Well it's an important conversation and again, new Vesel Biologics is only available through a physician network.
