Summary

This episode of The Leviathan Chronicles follows the crew of the research vessel Inveneos as they respond to distress signals in the North Atlantic, discovering the burning cargo ship Veloscora. After a dramatic rescue operation, they pull an unconscious woman from the sinking vessel, only to learn she was searching for something critical on the now-submerged ship and hints at sabotage.

Insights
  • Maritime rescue operations require rapid decision-making under uncertainty, with crews balancing incomplete sensor data against immediate life-safety priorities
  • Advanced marine equipment and specialized diving gear suggest the Veloscora was conducting covert deep-sea operations beyond standard commercial shipping
  • Survivors of maritime disasters often prioritize mission objectives over personal safety, indicating potential high-stakes cargo or research objectives
  • Communication systems fail during critical emergencies, forcing crews to rely on visual identification and manual coordination
  • Sabotage in maritime contexts suggests organized opposition to specific research or recovery operations, not random criminal activity
Trends
Deep-sea research vessels equipped with submersible recovery capabilities are becoming targets for sabotage and hijackingMaritime emergency response protocols must account for electromagnetic interference and sensor degradation in adverse conditionsSpecialized diving equipment and radioactive material containment suggest growing commercial interest in deep-ocean resource recoveryCrew safety training in maritime emergencies increasingly emphasizes rapid evacuation over asset preservationInternational maritime incidents in remote waters involve complex jurisdictional and coordination challenges

The Inveneos Expeditions A Leviathan Chronicles story. The Inveneos Expeditions Episode 2 The Veloscora Chapter 2 The Veloscora That's the second flare. That means someone's still alive out there. And still nothing on radar? Nothing, Captain. It's strange. Are you sure the radar is fully calibrated? It could be more grim. Doubt it. We would have caught it before Cornwall. I'll run a diagnostic on the radar, but I'm picking up a large, growing heat signature on infrared. Look at that. Looks more fire than flare. We need to alter our course tully. Yeah, yeah we do. Okay Gibson, take us 90 degrees starboard. Abby, how far to that heat source on infrared? Around 7 miles, Captain. Let's bring the Inveneos to full speed. If it's a marine rescue, they might not have much time in these waters. Love to get some sense of what we're running into. Gibson! Yes, Captain? Moment to shine. Time to get your bird in the air. Get the Seahawk ready for launch and give us eyes on that fire. On it. Gibson dashed out of the bridge and sprinted to the Inveneos drone bay at the front of the ship. He fastened himself quickly into the flight chair at the room's core. Instantly twin touchscreens descended before him. In the flight chair. Ready for launch, Captain. The forward bow of the Inveneos cracked open like a giant clamshell, unveiling the aerial drone bay within. A launch rail attached to the Seahawk pointed upwards to the northeastern sky. The ship's long distance delta winged drone was now cocked, locked and loaded. Cages open. Let the bird fly, Gibson. Aye, Captain. Launching Seahawk, now. The rebel deafening roar, the rail gun ignited and catapulted the Seahawk into the dark sky, painting a trail of blue flame above the North Atlantic sea. Alright. Back in the drone bay, Gibson applied the gentle list of pressure to the flight stick, causing the Seahawk to soar upwards. Ascending the 1500 feet on heading 335. 335 confirmed, Seahawk sending telemetry to you. Received. On route. 60 second ETA. Roger that. Whoa. Hey, what was that? I'm seeing an EMI spike. Fucking gremlins. How's your telemetry feed? Yeah, got a little choppy for a sec, but I reckon we're all right now. Starting to see some heavy fog coming in. Roger. We're starting to see it up here too. Switching to night vision. Gibson, use every sensor you got. Search for lifeboats, smaller signals, anything. Roger that. Turning up the game. Looks like infrared is lighting up. You should be seeing something soon. Yeah, I can't quite see... wait. I think I might have something. There's something in the water. It's still pretty distant. Can you see the source of the flare? Not well. Interference is picking up. Weird. We're getting some up here too. There's definitely a heat signature up ahead. It's reading strong. You guys seeing this on the bridge? We are. Can you identify the source? Based on these readings, I think there's been some sort of combustion or fire. AIS shows no vessel identification. Must be operating as a ghost ship. Well, that makes me thrilled to meet whoever's on board. Hey, Odie, do we have any, you know, protection on board? You mean like guns? Yeah. Yeah, Tommy. I loaded up on AR-15s while we were docked in the Netherlands. You know, on my morning herring, Ronnie. Oh, fuck you. Gibson, I need answers. The interference is still increasing. I'm struggling to maintain a clear visual. Whatever's causing that fire, it's not normal fuel. Then maybe it's time to take her down to get a closer look. Gibson, think you can give me a flyby? You bet, Captain. Just a heads up. With this much static, I recommend not taking her in too close. Good point. Let's take her down really slow. With deft precision, Gibson edged the Seahawk downwards, flying closer to the heat signature on his screen. Approaching target, sending you up to flight POV field. The fog is making it hard to see. Some sort of cargo ship. The image is too fuzzy. Looks like a ship with its aft and port side on fire. I'm seeing that. It's hard to confirm with all the fog. Going to initiate a tighter surveillance pass to confirm. Gibson maneuvered the drone to level out 200 feet above the surface of the North Sea. Soon emerging out of the fog was a 250 foot vessel with a heavy duty crane in its center aft. The ship's draft was deep, revealing its ability to carry substantial weight. What kind of boat? Could it be a freighter? Maybe a tanker? It could explain the size of the fire if it was carrying fuel. Or explosives. Maybe a military vessel? I suppose we'll find out when we get there. Abby, what's the time to me, Dee? Three minutes. With those flames, they're not okay. Listen up. It looks like we have a marine emergency. We might need to get people offloaded onto Invenios in a hurry. We can use the Scarab. She's a small tender, but she's fast. You'll need a second set of hands to tie off. Abby, you up for this? Damn straight. Okay, you go with Oberlin and get the Scarab ready to launch. Both of you, stay on radio. Got it. We will. Come on. Follow me down to the right. Right on tune, I know. And with permission, we should hit the med bay and get first aid kits in case. Don't be wounded. That's good thinking, Abby. Good luck, and make sure you... Captain! Captain, I need you to look at Seahawks Infrared. You won't believe this. What am I looking at, Gibson? The fire on the boat. It went completely out. I've triangulated the position from where the flare went off. Whoever fired it should be within the next square kilometer. I didn't see anything in this fog. It came in so quick. And all our sensors are still spassing out. I've taken this down to quarter throttle. Too hard to see in this soup. Good idea. We could be next to an iceberg and not know it. Do you smell the faint almond smell? I smell something. Anti-freeze or engine fluid, maybe? Not sure. Wait, look. I think we got something. I see it cheap. Four o'clock. Is that the bow of a ship? Hard to tell. I'm going to take us closer. Oh. Smell that now? Metal burning. And diesel smoke. Something bad went down here. Chief, what kind of ship is this? Looks like research. That center crane looks like a davit for a submersible. Hey, Chief, I think I see some letters. Can you make it out? Vel... Veloscora. Spanish? Maybe Portuguese? Chief, look. Over there. I think I see a deck cleat we can tie off. Better make it a slipknot. I don't think this boat's going to be floating much longer. Did you hear that? Someone's alive. Hang on. I'm going to bring her about. Get the bow line ready. Aye, Chief. Can you get a hook on it? I'm trying. I missed. It's okay. Try again. Abby recoiled the bow line urgently and threw the rope again at the deck cleat that hung ten feet above them. I got it. I got it, Chief. Here. Help me pull us in. I got it. There. We're tied off. Well done. Here. I'll give you a boost. Can you reach the deck? Yeah. Yeah, I got it. Use the rope. I'm in. I'm right behind you. Tully. Tully. We've made it onto the deck. Over. Over. I said we've made it to the ship. Abby and I have boarded. We're searching for the crew now. Tully. It looks pretty bad. She's going down. Overland repeat. I did not tap. What's your step? How many crew are you seeing? Tully. Come back. Tully. I'm getting too much of the storage. Tully. Search for Velascora. That's the name of the boat. Velascora. Can you hear me? What was that? Repeat, Overland. Ah! Radios are useless. Look at all this fire damage. The walls are still warm. Must have had an oil fire that got extinguished when the aft got submerged. You smell that? Burn and diesel. There could still be fires in another compartment. We need to get off this powder keg fast. There. You hear that? This way. Ah! Hang on. You really don't want to be slipping into the North Atlantic this time of year. Actually, I don't really want to slip in any time of year. This is strange. Yeah. I have some questions. You don't get it. Where's the bloody crew? Hello? Someone must have shot that flare. Hello? Anyone? Hello? Is anyone on board? We saw your flare. We're here to help. Gibson didn't see any lifeboats, right? Right. So where is everyone? Check that berth. As Abby pried open one of the hatch doors, her eyes quickly fell upon an arsenal of advanced marine equipment. On one side hung expertly fitted dive suits with accompanying rebreaters. On the other was a series of sturdy metallic containment casks. What the hell? Their surfaces were adorned with an array of strange symbols. That toxic beast? Abby recognized one of them as the trefoil symbol for radioactivity. No crew, but there's some strange equipment here. Oh, hold on! Shit! Are you okay? Yeah, yeah, but this isn't the ship I want to go down on. Me neither. Come on. Let's keep looking while we can. Hello? Can anyone hear me? Hello? Hello? Anybody? We're here to assist. Abby, let's split up to save time. There's a ladder leading up to the second deck. We're leaned over pretty far. Can you make it? Damn straight I can. I'll stay on radio. Good. Then I'll check the compartment over here to- Oh my god, Oberlin! Holy shit! Holy shit! Abby rushed over to Oberlin on the slanted deckway to see him standing over a burned body in what remained of a captain's uniform. I found someone! Oh my god! They're pretty badly burned. Oberlin, are you okay? Yeah, yeah, I'm okay, but- Oh my god, what happened to him? There's blood on the walls. The fire must have gotten him. Chief, look down at his forehead. Looks like two gunshots. What happened to him? What happened on this boat? There again. He's breaking up! They again, Dominic! It came from inside. Chief, time. I know. Come on. Can't help this poor soul. Let's get inside before- Wait! What if- What if whoever did that to him is inside? Are you carrying a firearm? Christ, no. Why does everyone always think I'm carrying a gun? Come on. This hatchway leads inside. Man, this place saw some damage. A lot of flooding. What happened here? The electrical systems are fried. Look here. Are those bullet holes? Hey, they came from down there. Come on, I- A lot of smoke coming in. Yeah, yeah, this section is pretty bad. Did you hear that? Abby and Oberlin sprinted down the passageway of the Veloscora until they found the common room with radio equipment, sonar receivers, and computer screens. Almost all were black and filled with static, while one single screen at the bottom showed an underwater live cam shot. A woman in her late 30s was lying on the floor, barely conscious. She was still gripping a flare gun in her right hand. Looks like we found our calamity, Jane. Abby rushed to the woman's side and pulled the gun from her hand. She's alive, but weak breathing. We've got to get her out of here. With this smoke, we all better get out of here. Come on! Oh, shit! The Scarab is tied to one of the deck cleats. If this ship goes down, the Scarab goes with her, and we'll have no way to get back to the Invenius. I'm afraid we don't have time to look for any other survivors. Come on, let's get her under us. I'm with you. Two, three, lift! With the woman slung between them, Abigail and Oberlin rush back to the Scarab, struggling against the increasing tilt of the ship. Okay. Come on, we gotta move. I need you to walk. I'm gonna get you safe. I'm gonna get you back. Under ours? Not much further. The next compartment should get us to the outside deck. We've got to untie the Scarab before... The Veloscorra lurched violently beneath their feet, causing both Abigail and Oberlin to stumble to their knees. Chief! Give me your hand! I'm okay. Watch your head! Got her. Come on! The Scarab is up ahead! Together, Abigail and Oberlin, along with the woman they carried, burst out of the Veloscorra's last compartment back onto the open deck. That pressure is good. Hold those stairs. Can you make it? I can. Chief! The Scarab! Ten yards ahead, the Scarab lay anchored to the Veloscorra. The deck cleat to which their boat was tied was now dangerously close to the water. Let's move! Hurry! It's pulling the Scarab under! Come on! We need to get aboard! Here! Hand her down to me! Yep! Got her? Yep! Got her! Quick! Get in! Chief! You don't have a lot of time! Quick! Untie the Scarab! I can't get the line off the cleat! It's too tight! I thought I told you the tie is slip knot! I did! The rope's doubled over! There's too much tension! The Veloscorra groaned again and shifted in the water She's going under! pulling the Scarab further to its left side We're getting pulled down! and a lot to seep over its gulls Water's coming in over the rails! Get that line off the cleat! Now! I can't! It's pulling us under with it! Cut the line! Cut it! I need a knife! Find one fast! Abigail frantically searched for some sort of cutting blade anything. Gotta have something there! Freezing seawater rushed over the transom numbing Abby's hand as she looked everywhere Hurry! Abby's hand finally landed on the unconscious body of the woman Instinctively she began to search and was surprised to find something hard and sharp on the woman's belt I found it! I found a knife! Blood! Cut the rope! Cut it now! I'm trying! Come on! We're going to be pulled under! There! We're free sheep! Hit it! Gunning it! The Scarab's engines roared as the tender sped north and pulled away from the sinking carcass of the Velascoil which had now slipped completely beneath the surface of the North Atlantic Oberlin pulled the wheel hard to the left sending the tender racing into the chilled night fog Abby, how's our friend? Still unconscious but breathing! Hail the Inveneos! Aye! Inveneos! This is Scarab! Do you copy? Inveneos! Do you read? Scarab, this is Inveneos. I read. What's your status? We're en route to dock Inveneos. Sensors show us 8 km west of your position Repeat, Scarab. I did not copy. What's your position? Inveneos! Dammit! Inveneos! Scarab! Scarab, I have you. What is your position? Inveneos, we show 8 km west of your position What is your status, Scarab? We're at full throttle back to dock And tolly, get the med bay preps. Yeah, yeah, I'm, I'm fine We're here, let's go You're early We don't want to keep the king waiting He's not waiting He told us to come Okay, the king is inside, Sala Are you Leban? Just Sala It's okay Leban, let me to back the truck Be careful inside, Sala I will The gate opened into a courtyard that was dominated by a small estate house once white, now faded gray, a vestige of Somalia's colonial past The mansion was a small Italian palatina built in the 1930s to overlook the Indian Ocean and was one of the few buildings in Luhani not constructed of Cinderbrick After walking past more bodyguards and several women carrying plates of food Sala ventured into the once grand dining hall where King Bashir sat alone in the cavernous room at a large square table laden with copious platters of chicken, rice, bread and eggs Close the door Sala noted that Bashir's head had not risen from his plate nor had he invited him to sit down Subah Wanakshan, my king Subah Wanakshan I'm giving the hostages to Kassel What? But uncle, I... King, you will call me king Of course, my king But it was us that caught them You know this, I took the hostages that were in my territory that you, my king, gave to me and my men But Kassel brought the bottle and fronted the whole village And now you want me to tell him to split the ransom with you? My king, please at least give us a thought We used fuel for three boats to find the ship quickly before it could sink No And what if Kassel didn't arrive? Maybe the ship would have sank, eh? And then we'd have nothing and I would have no tribute Please allow us to have something To feed my men No It makes me look weak And you're even weaker The king scooped up some rice on his plate with a piece of kanjiro bread and sipped on a can of Coca-Cola Kassel just wants your seat, my king He's plotting to replace you Of course he does He's a wolf And you, you are weak You should have killed that family in Mogadishu as you were ordered Then your mother wouldn't have to hide you here with me But Uncle Bashir King Bashir There were children and a newborn Which would have sent a stronger message to rivals Like I said, weak I have to give Kassel the prisoners The entire camp saw what he brought in If I make him split the ransom with you Everyone in camp will see their favoritism They will see weakness And soon they will fall behind Kassel Not me So Sala Kassel gets the prisoners But Kassel is trying to steal Luhani from you You think he's the first? Damn it, Sala Power must be taken It's never given or handed How do you think I got this camp? The men I work for would never allow Kassel to take what's mine Who are the men you work for? Men you will never meet Men with interest that extend all over the globe Men with real power Not men that are weak My king, I ask a favor You being here alive is already a favor, Sala You'd be dead if you stayed in Mogadishu I'm grateful for your help You should be grateful Thank you, Sire Not to me, idiot I didn't know you Did not care, but your aunt loved you She was a kind woman When I married your aunt, I became a king Before, I was just a warlord People think before they try to kill a king Give me the prisoner's ship, my king Please You have ships You have the zibza, hapoom No, I want the hostages' ship The boat they arrived in It doesn't float, Sala We had to cut it and have to get the hostages out Then I'll take what's left At least Li Ban and my crew can sell the parts and scavenge for the rest I've found the hostages, Bashir You also want the village to see the territory You gave me accounts for something Surely I deserve something, please Do what you want with this ship It's scrap But whatever you're able to sell needs to go to the quarter that you owe me from last month You can feed your men with whatever is left after that I am finished eating You can have the rest Gotcha, you're okay You're going to be okay You're safe We're gonna help you just keep breathing What happened? Were she conscious? Fairly, severe smoke inhalation How many others did you see? We saw other bodies He's been known Sorry, let's get her to the med bay No, you see, we've had a medic Not now, Obi Great job, Abby Take the helm, resume course and get us the hell out of here Aye, Captain You've got her left side I've got her right, come on Watch the stairs, easy now I got it Shinto, watch your head Almost there I'll get the door Here, let's put her down on the table Where? Don't Where's... No It's okay You're safe now We got you off the boat Gibson, quick Can't meet that pony tank on the ground over there The green one This one? It says 100% oxygen That's the one, bring it over with the regulator Hurry Here, Captain We need to get her on O2 Oberlin, hold her head still Tully, quickly grab the air tank and turn the nozzle Pressurizing the regulator Okay, listen to me I need you to listen You're safe, you're on a boat called the Invenios We responded to your rescue flare We're trying to help you I need you to breathe on this Can you understand me? I need you to breathe through this regulator Open your mouth Come on, open Open Tully gently pushed the regulator into the woman's mouth Who accepted it and started to slow her breathing With deep inhales Who... who are you? Where? It's okay, it's okay You're all right You're safe We rescued you from the Veloscora No Whoa, whoa Hey, hey, hey It's okay Take me Stay away from me Where's my suit? Who are you? My flare? Yeah Wasn't it you who fired off the distress signal? Where are we? Where's the Veloscora? Where's the boat I was on? Look, I don't know how long you were unconscious But it looked like something happened on your boat Something exploded or caught fire If the ship was half sunk when we found you I need to get back right now Not without a submersible, you're not Look, I'm sorry to tell you this, but your ship went under Looks like you were the only survivor Only survivor? What time is it? What time is it? 2300 UTC Okay, okay, 2300 Wait, wait, wait When did you see the flare? How many hours ago? I'm going to say it was about four or five hours ago Five hours ago Look, I know you might be feeling some shock About 95 Tell us what happened Where are we now? Where are we? I told you, you're on the Invenios We just brought you on board a few minutes ago We found you passed out in the con room of the Veloscora No, where? Fucking where? Quickly, I need to know exactly where the Veloscora went down Why? Why do you need to know? You're sick and cheese Okay, everyone, let's all just take a breath, guys Guys Gentlemen, can we all just take a step back And give our guest some space? Hi, my name is Abby and I'm the systems engineer on board We met back on the Veloscora, but you were pretty out of it I was the one who found you on board The woman said nothing, but held a defensive position In the corner of the med bay Abby placed some folded clothes on the table in the center Your clothes are still pretty wet and you look like you're freezing I thought you might like some fresh clothes and a towel Thanks Captain, the Inveneos is on auto helm and back on course for Ponta Delgada But would you guys mind and please give us ladies a moment alone? Actually, we don't Look, we can't just turn around... Okay, you don't understand I need a deep diving submersible as soon as possible I'm willing to pay any price I mean it, any price Yeah, that usually ends up badly for me How about you start by telling me what happened to your boat? Look, Captain, I just... Lady, I'm sorry, but this isn't a hard question Look, I understand But first just... Just tell me where this ship is heading The Azores Now what happened to your vessel? You look like the kind of person who could use a drink Which luckily, I happened to have... Actually, I don't... Don't what? Sure, I'll have a drink Now, we've got about 20 hours before we dock at Pantatagada So I'd like to invite you to sit down with us And in your own time, answer some questions So that we can figure out how to help you Because you're looking for someone to help you, aren't you? Yes, yes I am Tully, was it? Yeah, it was Here, have a seat Thanks Alright Now, who the hell are you And what happened to the Veloscora?
