Summary

Game Scoop! 840 covers the narrative adventure game Dispatch from Ad Hoc Studios, explores early access survival game Hytale as a potential Minecraft successor, reviews Double Fine's Keeper, and highlights absurd low-quality games flooding Nintendo's eShop under the 'Nintendo Seal of Quantity' segment.

Insights
  • High-quality narrative games with celebrity voice acting (Aaron Paul, Jeffrey Wright) can succeed as interactive television experiences rather than traditional video games, suggesting a viable market segment between games and streaming
  • Early access games with strong fundamentals can embarrass established competitors through superior quality-of-life features, as Hytale demonstrates with decade-requested Minecraft features implemented on day one
  • Nintendo's eShop curation has completely collapsed, with AI-generated assets and low-effort asset-flip games dominating new releases, indicating a platform moderation crisis
  • Episodic release strategies for narrative games create television-like anticipation and engagement patterns, differentiating them from traditional game release models
  • The decline of premium puzzle games like PopCap's titles correlates directly with mobile gaming's shift to aggressive monetization, leaving a market gap for quality short-form experiences

Welcome back. No. What's up everybody? Welcome to IJ and Gabe Svupam, your host Damon Hadfield. Joining me this week are Sam Claiborne. Hey, it's good to be back. Justin Davis. Svup. And Mark Medina. I'm here, Damon. We've got a great show for you this week as teased by a teaser trailer earlier this week that Nintendo's Seal of Quantity has returned with the fresh batch of Nintendo e-slop as Sam. We got a trailer. Yeah, I saw that trailer. There was a teaser trailer for it. It was good. It was on our Facebook. So that'll be coming up. And then I've read a really weird headline this week that I have to share with the class. And we've got some good listener mail. But first, on Sam's recommendation, I've been playing Dispatch. And it's great. Yeah, how many episodes are you in? Three. There's eight episodes. Yeah, that's a great place to stop. Just, oh, I just do one, I just do like one a night. They take like an hour. What do you mean to stop? No, no, I don't mean stop playing personally. I'm just saying you've gotten a good taste for it. Yeah. Yeah. I've been doing like one a night. They last about an hour. And this wasn't really on my radar. I don't know. Like Mark Justin, if either you check this out. Yeah. Okay. I started playing it over break and then was that a town and stuff. So, but like I'm excited to pick it up and finish it. Yeah. So I'll talk about it a little bit because like I said, this wasn't, this was kind of a blind spot for me. But it's from ad hoc studios which is former tell tell tell tale devs. So it's a very tell tale type game, you know, adventure. You watch a lot of it, but that's fine. It's really high quality. It's made with, you know, critical roles involved somehow. I don't know what they're. But it feels I watched their show, the Legend of Vox Machina, the anime show, which is like a comedy D&D type show and very similar type of comedy here. But it's really good. It's like really well written. It's fun. The premises are main character who's played by Aaron Paul. Oh, yeah, it's a world where superheroes. So it's kind of like invincible or the boys superheroes exist and they're employed by companies. Aaron Paul is a man guy. He's a superhero, but it doesn't have any super powers. He just has a giant mech suit, but his mech suit gets destroyed so he can't super here anymore. So he goes to work as a dispatch at the company that like, you know, sends the superheroes out to fight crimes. First of all, I don't know if you agree, Sam. It's just nice to hang out with Aaron Paul again. A hundred percent. He's such a welcoming, great voice and a little bit wall very different character. But just still like has this kind of cleverness to him and a friendliness, which is interesting when he's even being a dick. I just think he's really, he's really attractive as a personality. Yes, game. Yeah, that's great. I mean, Aaron Paul has got a great voice and you can tell he's taking it very seriously. He's another animation work like like Bojack Horseman, right? So he's great. And then also Jeffrey Wright is in it as he has a completely different character. Just like, yeah, completely different character from anything you've ever seen him in. He's great. He plays a superhero like a speedster who all the years that he was like running around fast. He didn't realize it was also like accelerating his lifespan. So he's only in his 30s, but he's an old man and he's he's great. Oh, he's hilarious. And it becomes a point of a lot of jokes and it's really good. Yeah, super good. So it's episodic just like, you know, the walking dead or the old telltale games were. And you watch a lot, you know, you make dialogue choices and then, you know, someone so we'll remember that. You don't move around. So it's different than walking dead that way. You're never controlling. You're watching a walk around and it's a it's a good thing. Yeah, it's less video gamey. I mean, you know, whereas walking dead was like, you know, a video game that was sort of like a television show. This is a lot more of like an interactive television show, I would say. Like a video game element. It's definitely take the back seat, which again, I would say it's a good thing. It's treat it more like a season of television. If this were just a season of television would still be good. If it weren't to game at all, just because it's a great impact. I think it's a better take on this than boys. Oh, I love. Yes. I love to spin off of Gen B. I love learning about I think this universe, even in this little like dabbling in it and how they handle it. It's just it's better acted. It's more interesting and it has a bigger heart in the right places and still has the gross stuff and all that stuff. Yeah. I had like never even heard of it. And then one of my coworkers was like, are you guys going to do the dispatch finale tomorrow? Like he was just talking about it. Like it was a TV show. So confused. Well, I'm a little confused too. I mean, obviously this blows past you in trailers and stuff because it doesn't look like a game, right? That's a problem for it. But it's it was I did see the buzz at the time. Like I was not I was aware of it once it came out, but I did not I was not aware of it until it came out. And also the decision to release it episodically like these episodes were so clearly done. You know, they could have just released it as one thing and they chose to cut because like what the episodes came out either weekly or bi weekly like very, very quickly. Like they were coming out with episode after episode. And so I think that that was smart like unlike telltale were like those came out once a month and it's making it as they went. Like we need to finish the next episode. Like South Park style. Yeah, but but this is this is clearly not that right. This was this was their choice to make it more television like I'd be like come back in a week or two from the next chapter. So then it has this overlay to it. So that's this extremely high quality dramatic action superhero show that you watching choose consequences and the consequences matter. There's two romantic interests and like that really matters in it. I have chose a port of course chose the famous beautiful blonde woman which would be no surprise. And I am there's another character who's like a villain that's become a good a good hero that is the other romantic interest. So then but but there's an overlay which was kind of a little bit of a real time strategy game where you're sending your dispatches out to things and it doesn't make sense. It's not intuitive and then once it is intuitive by the end of the game like I really liked it enough that I would play more of it like it was really fun and I got really good only by the last chapter. I was getting like totally like bad ranks because it's kind of having fun like screwing up because it doesn't matter the story is going to progress anyway. And I don't know it was like low stakes and really funny and cool and basically yeah you have to decide what your heroes who all stats they may be a talker. They may be a good. They may be really fast. Yeah and then you just read the description it's like a cat stuck in a tree and it's like well who's going to be best for that and though maybe a little hint like you know the owner is freaking out and like you can talk to the owner about it right. It's a hockey person but it might be like the cat turns out to be I think this is a real instance like the cats actually a tiger it's like what are you doing punch the shit out of it. If you sent a fighter that might actually work but if not you're going to get attacked your fighters can get knocked out this is smart. Yeah. Yeah that's the there isn't actual dispatch game sort of like in the middle of each episode surrounded by the story that you watch and like Sam said it takes a couple episodes to get the hang of the game but I think once you realize it's it's it's clever it's clever it's fun it's like a real time strategy sort of exercise it's good. Yeah I think I remember reading I think it's been a big hit like I think it's been a big success so you know both well that hopefully sorry it's late to scoop nation but better late the never I really think people that listen to this show will find a lot to connect with with this game specifically it's a good good scoop game a real scoop jam like I yeah like I said it was from ad hoc it's their first release as ad hoc but ad hoc was formed in 2018 so it took him a long time they're also ostensibly working on the wolf among us to. So I don't know it's taking a long time maybe that maybe this is a reason why wolf among us to is taking so long I don't know yeah or that this took took press yeah so yeah but you know where is Torrance California where it is my next door neighbor where I live in Rdano Beach it's the next city over. Oh wow that's another point yeah so it feels I'm like you know solving crimes in my own backyard in this game it's great. Is it so they go to a bar called sardine which is like that's an actual venue I play it and been to but I don't think it's the same thing I've got to that episode yet I don't think so but because that's like not right a lot Torrance and it's yeah it's confusing anyway I can't tell if it's real locations are not. Torrance has all the best Asian food in the South Bay. Nice anyway that's dispatch I'm enjoying that anyone else playing anything they want to shut up. I mean I think Mark and I are both playing high tail yeah yeah which one is that is that the one that like is blowing up in Minecraft one yeah clone okay it's it's cool I the one of the first lines in our review is I that it's just Minecraft too and that is 100% correct yeah like content wise it is. Far below Minecraft obviously because Minecraft has had so long to like add stuff and this is extremely early access it's only this survival mode you'll go into certain places and it'll just be like this is a work in progress you can't do this yet it doesn't launch with adventure. The this game's whole main way it's going to differentiate itself from Minecraft is that it's a lot more sort of progression oriented and RPG oriented is going to have dungeons and stuff free to go out in the world to do that's a tool thing and none of that's in the game yet like no anytime you're in the world and I think our review and progress talks about this you'll find like an entrance to a dungeon or you'll find like you know some cool ruin and it literally has like under construction sign that says like working progress on it and you just can't go in. So you can farm animals they don't do anything yeah you can write a horse but when you get off it just runs away I'm really loving it like the game is really polished it's really good it's really impressive it has I actually like the building more than I like the building in Minecraft so it's kind of unbelievable that like it almost embarrasses mojang and Minecraft in some ways were like animations feel smoother and the building feels a little bit more robust and there's small quality of life features I don't know if you saw this mark but like it's really good. If you're in a crafting table trying to build this out of the other it'll automatically pull thing the crafting table will have access to and see things that are in nearby storage chests and like people have been asking for that in Minecraft for literally a decade and like this game that's been in early access for one day just did it so like but but it's not really much of a it's like it's extremely early access like there's just not kind of much to it yet from a gameplay perspective like even though it's been developing for like eight years. 10 years. It's like yeah I watch the whole story and it's like I it's not in development for eight years it was just announced eight years ago and went through a little bit of a limbo well and they like this this developer it's a it's a crazy story like the very short version is that they were acquired by riot so like the League of Legends developer and publisher bought the developer they owned them and funded the game for years and years and years and then it was stuck in like development hell and they were like redoing the engine from scratch. And then eventually riot said now we're done like we're canceling the game we're shutting it down and that was last year and the original developer brought it back and then six months later is just able to release it. Yeah yeah like it seems crazy to be like why somebody should do that with Half Life 3 yeah yeah and so I'm like there's all kinds of little details like just there's more decorations and like bits and bobs like sort of in the dungeons and around you know that you can place in your house like I really like it but I played it for two or three evenings I mean since it came out so yeah this is like two two evenings I played it and I feel like I've kind of seen I'm like okay like well I'll come back in a year when there's more game like there's kind of not too much more for me to do yeah game game play wise it feels very like very updated the combat is actually fun you can jump much higher you vault if you know like you like you can man mantel like that yeah it seems to have numbers when you attack yeah yeah yeah it's just a mention with the storage it's got the beautiful thing that I've only other I know I'm sure it's in other games I've only ever seen it and verizing where it's like the add stacks feature where you just like open a storage container and you click a button and everything that is in your inventory automatically gets added if there's already stuff in there so you don't have to like sort through it just makes everything faster well the Minecraft is kind of in that will the warcraft slump right where it's like it can't really change because people are just so used to how it is and it runs on everything so this feels like an actual like update to to Minecraft I was totally impressed I liked it more than I thought I would but there's just there's just not much content yet and so for me it's really going to be like you know how quickly like are we waiting months for them to be like we added new mobs and we do you know improve the farming or is it going to are they going to be able to get up it's out quickly like that's going to determine how much time ice and so far so good great you know their numbers are huge so they have like this like huge player base and a bunch of streamers playing at which must make every single company in earth be like should we have just made a Minecraft clone what are we doing yeah this is allowed I can just do this that I've heard and again a lot of this isn't in the game yet but I've heard that this is terraria but minecraft where like if like terraria has like 30 some bosses in it and it's a lot more adventure oriented and RPG oriented but it's a 2D game right whereas this is this is trying to be that but in a 3D sort of voxel engine that sounds super cool yeah I mean I I hope it delivers on that I like it my only like thing and this is purely as a video guides maker for IGN this is a very unique problem is that I was like excited to cover this game and then there's just like not a whole lot to it and my fear is that the the release was bungled a little and that by the time they add adventure mode it's going to it's going to be really tough to get people to come back and I'm sure that's something they thought about but my guess is because their first like thing was like this you know releasing the game funded the next two years of development it kind of makes me think that because they went and either like we have to release something because we need catch that's to be able to do the rest of the stuff that's the attitude I have as well and that that's why I'm going to keep an eye on it and it's like you know it's January 15th if like hey the first week in February they're like we added a dungeon and then in March they added a new enemy and then they add a boss like if they're able to get that stuff out at a at a good clip then this will then this will be big but if they can't then then I think I agree interest is going to kind of fade remember telltale minecraft story mode I do I reviewed it with Pat Pat no way yeah that was one of the last games I reviewed for a gin wow yeah I don't know the answer to this just it maybe you do but like how are they allowed to do this like it's just minecraft they're selling it I mean there's been games that were closer copies like it's it's I mean it is just minecraft but like you know the farming works different the crafting works different the building works a little bit different like you know the furnaces work a little bit different like the so I don't think I mean there's been closer copies but yesterday I got stuck in a cave and I couldn't find my way out so what I did was I chopped above me and then jumped and built under me yeah just like I did it minecraft and it's like and I don't know I'm like huh I mean I think that these games are as close as like battlefield and call of duty I was just going to say you know we could be talking about minecraft and if you put this footage up I would think it's minecraft we could be talking about call of duty but if you put up battlefield six I wouldn't know the difference I mean but you but Damon you don't play either of those games like this this I like like like look it's like minecraft in the sense that it's a blocky 3d world but the art styles are different I would say like this is this is higher resin as a higher level of detail exactly I it does look a little bit better than minecraft does to my eye yeah when when like because I there was like rain falling and it's not it's cute in minecraft so I'm not doggy out but instead of like the little like kind of you know blocky rain drops hitting the ground like it actually just looks like rain going into grass I feel it's like minecraft 64 man I think minecraft is minecraft 64 yeah this is minecraft and until you go back and play Nintendo 64 games and then you realize how far off Sam anything you've been playing yeah I also finished keeper oh yeah which was double fine yeah yeah and I uh yeah I mean ducking is unbelievable looking it's very very slow and puts me to sleep but it's it ended up being like a interesting you know kind of like fraggle rock type world that you walk through and a bunch of crazy stuff happens at it it is interesting um what I like about it is it means that double fine can make a bunch of little thinky tiny games and every once in a while one will be amazing which is what they should be doing yeah someone mentioned stacking recently that was like the the nesting double game right like that was great yeah and didn't they have like a mech game where they had to change the name like iron assault or something oh yeah it was the next big game but then they had to like they didn't cost you the question they they could be really yeah yeah I was trying to think of that what the name of that I don't remember I'm I'm brigade I know I think in hindsight puzzles or is it just like things to interact with yeah but they're like the slowest easiest puzzles you can ever imagine your so things to interact with yeah okay it's really like a it's almost like um a scavengers rain type thing they're like made they made an environment they really want to show it to you everything's thought of and interesting and fits in that world but it's not you know it's not really gamified too strong yeah so flower journey those types of things yeah yeah okay here's a headline I read today that gave me pause this is this is on ijin.com echo the dolphin creator confirms multiple games in development they're making they're making multiple echo the dolphin and they didn't have an echo direct so announce them also isn't isn't the echo the dolphin creator just Sega it might be in a fake fan right now the the guy the actual guy he works at a different developer yeah yeah I say a publish but the actual guy that made echo the dolphin back in the day apparently last summer the creator of echo the dolphin pleased many fans by announcing that not only were remasters of the original games underway but a third installment was also in development there's only two so there were two like mainline ones and then a couple edutainment games on the genesis there was like a I feel like there was like a Wii one or is that endless ocean I'm getting serious yeah I think there was about Sega CD I think there was a third one for the dreamcast but apparently not like a third game I don't know I always spoil something about echo the dolphin yeah of course I know I you just aliens yes yes I am so the the first level that's what we're watching now if you're watching you may not you know you're never gonna pass the slump is it a Metroidvania no it's dolphin game the first the first level so first of all echo the dolphin is impossible it's an incredibly hard game it's one of those 60 big games that like it's like it's like the Lion King we're like nobody ever beat the first couple levels of it and so but it's gorgeous and beautiful and he controls really well so all these kids have like fond memories of like yeah I love that game and going around on this reef and you know avoiding the sharks and avoiding these bad guys like the back half of the game I add only know this because I watched a YouTube let's play of it I never got there my see you only get past this octopus by going slow I never do that I don't know and like it turns out that it's aliens and the plot goes completely off the goes completely insane and echo gets like teleported into an alien spaceship yeah and that's that's the plot of the game is that aliens sucked up all your stuff everything and you have to rescue them it's great sounds like we need a gritty reboot oh boy yeah this I the reason why I was surprised about headlines I would be surprised if there was a man for one new echo game they're making three echo games and what does it mean to remaster a 16-bit game what are they gonna do to it I don't these make it worse the pixel they did with Final Fantasy right like they made a bunch of before the pixel before pixel masters I mean even they did like really clean flash graphics for them yeah but they looked not good I think yeah people were mad about them those she wants yeah but the pixel remasters look good maybe this game would be an amazing pixel remaster with like a super pixelated in-depth scrolling you know parallax background yeah yeah you know they do that they can make the game good yeah maybe yeah that's I'm being I'm being such a header I don't know why tell me what to do I mean this hurts my thumb just thinking about me playing this on the Genesis controller it was so so lame yeah I mean for as much as I sort of make fun of Sonic the Hedgehog off and on over the years like I was a Genesis kid growing up so I had to defend echo on the on the on the playground well they I love that they talk like it's a silent movie like they go to talk and then it's like yeah yeah the world is a whole other screen yeah they put first in is kicking ass so much about echo the dolphin I wish I would have known 1993 they put that's a good move I I remember doing that one they put echo on xbla in like I don't know 2010 or something in Hillary Goldstein reviewed it and his review just says this game sucks basically I have to do any of this stuff you can put move things downwards and then use them to open areas like this is all blowing my mind right does echo actually moving it or it would be a good Metroidvania but the reason it's not is that it's kind of like these instances of like adventure game areas where you have to like do a bunch of things and then you go to the next area yeah I don't understand this whole like speed scrolling thing it's it's the it's level that's that's blast processing that's right that's right second does but Nintendo yeah levels are just huge impossible yeah is there no match there's no map you're like I would you know anywhere I don't remember they're moving but there's a great map in egm 2 I'm sure yeah yeah yeah you're right okay anyway please be excited for three echo the dolphin games coming apparently all right I think I will be that made my week the Nintendo seal of quantity is your assurance it is your assurance that literally no one at Nintendo is paying any attention to what games are being published on the e shop we have got a new crop of great titles to highlight this week and let's kick things off jobbert if you're if you're ready are you ready jobbert we we need to stop down okay we're just gonna go down the list first game we want to point out is mom life simulator and the first thing you'll see is just a real beautiful piece of AI Slop has the key art that they used here no all these are just gonna be that same AI face now a lot of them do a lot of them do have that AI face yeah so mom life simulator conquer chaos unlock upgrades and rule the family empire that's what that's how they're selling this game welcome how it works welcome welcome to the daily life of the most caring yet incredibly busy mom in this game you check on the role of a mother who tries to manage it all caring for her family keeping the house cozy and still find me a little time for herself oh my god no look maybe looks dead this game is extremely sexist for two were the were the dad of the kid dead and she propped up the dead bodies because they were just sit there she's like here drink whatever well it looks like the scene in weapons yeah that's like yeah it doesn't look like that scene in weapons you can tell on the screenshot there's even a typo it says place plates won the table place plates won the table mm-hmm the screenshot before that she's making she yet to put the beef on the frying pan to make dinner this mom life simulator everyone great oh it's on sale for 40% off it's only six bucks but sale ends in nine hours so I'll try to get this episode published as quickly as possible so scoop nation knows about this okay man at least at least this one looks like a real video game it kind of does it kind of has that like what are the you know like power wash sim kind of graphics where it's like kind of ultra realistic but house flipper yeah house flipper was the one I was trying to take out they could they could they could rebrand this as tradwife simulator like the cover just is already if you take that idea she's what's up with those profits yeah I've said this before when we look at these games you know I would think if you want to make video games it's because you like video games already and you've played great games like you have to know that what you're making is not a great game but also why you don't want your whatever your game is you don't want to have cool original artwork no just slap it up with chat gpt that's fine throw that up there just slap it up just slap it up we're going to get we're going to stop and boy stop us from ordering a stick and water that's okay that fridge looks rough that was great all the cooked food in the fridge oh my god this is already cooked it's the best fridge ever yeah all right so that was tradlife simulator the meat is just out there's so much cross contamination in this one picture it's not a very good mom I'm just gonna say sorry okay we all like AAA video games scoop nation loves triple a video games isn't it so annoying that you have to buy triple a video games individually well good news it's so annoying the triple a games ultimate collection is now available finally every game you can just once with one simple purchase you get all the triple a games it's the ultimate collection you know games like world of solitaire nights and guns trash punk pixel cafe train traffic manager they're all here together i i love trash punk i suspect that they don't even know that that's an industry term that triple a games and they're just trying to get to the head of the alphabetic list yeah yeah yeah like either that warming company or it's a games because they're saying open up we're gonna shut them up it's so funny don't eat your slap say ah okay okay i'm gonna say something controversial oh here you don't look that bad no i don't be honest with you okay one of them looked exactly like nuclear throne uh or bro force i think that was trash punk name like the yeah i mean these honestly don't look that bad look at those animations i mean i mean i so basically one of these games was like the top selling thing on we remember that it came with a controller and i had a much crappy games in it and everybody bought it yeah what is what what is triple a games cost it is it's going for a steal right now Justin usually it costs eighty dollars usually cost eighty dollars but it's on sale for ninety one percent off just six ninety nine that's a good idea these are all i quickly googled one these are all like these are all available on the e-shop individually yeah this is a compilation yeah there you go do we go back to the the title the key the main key art that has the title on it the for for some reason just the outline of the title really bugs me how each individual a is outlined and then the rounded edges around the g and the s it just yeah it just bugs me so which of these games has mild blood at that yes our b rating right go me trash do you think this is my trash maybe solitaire solitaire yeah solitaire yeah solitaire you're a world of solitaire motorcycle game trash punk maybe get ran over by the train okay this next game i just i selected because of the whip lash that you get from the title this game is called battle tanks animal wars oh i love battle tanks battle tanks animal wars is this one they didn't spell it with an x yeah yeah mixed opportunity there save the animal kingdom from mole fueled doom okay moles i don't see any animals oh it's got a minecraft style look where are the animals how do they do this john chivalte and pulp fiction gift where are all the animals yeah some of these four players go single screen call that's cool oh this is just released yesterday to you this is brand new you just found it is it already on sale oh yeah 40% three bucks three bucks i'm sensing a tactic in discounts similar to amazon okay so it's like bomber man i don't know there's no animal hold on there's animals in the portraits there yeah monkey and a raccoon i think they're in the tanks oh the animals are the tanks got it okay well they're in the tank mm got it right okay are driving them with a little pause yeah okay i really like this next one this next one has really high production values this is clothing store simulator and you're gonna love the the key art for this it looks so she's simulators everywhere these days tcg card shots oh that gradient that was from real video yeah it's you know build the boutique of your games clothing stores this seems fine Damon i think i mean look like does this look like a good video game like no but i feel like i'm i'm like the last couple times we did this this seal of quantity it's like they were literal scams so the fact that you're showing us actual video games this time is like i'm like this doesn't seem too bad i look good i just can't imagine playing this on a switch like that looks like a pc game yeah i what i'm confused about is how do you get a game to look this low five yeah today it's it's a style like it's a trend right this is trend i just think it looks bad yeah they should run it through the unreal engine five mm-hmm no processor there's all these there's all these simulator games that are like everywhere now right well yeah this one looks just like the grocery store one yep yep grocery store except for that go hot awful logo that but they're not jokes they're like really wrote boring simulators it is interesting like work like these work games like you know but they're like should we make it fun they're like no just make it just look at that store there's two there's two outfits in that entire store so you can tell they're going to roll it out that way they're like well first what to start your business you're all going to have one sweater and one white belted long sleeve black shirt sell them and then they're like now you can put out three dummies with three outfits mm-hmm i can just feel the roll out all right this next one let me know if this title reveals what the inspiration for the game might have been this game is called need for race need for race three king three king wait that name is too obvious let's call it one before speed instead the slot is great yeah yeah like it's like an animal oh it doesn't look anything I like to cover no no this car is still covered in blood by yeah here we go this is this is more what I was hoping do you think these companies sell one copy of these games that's what I I wonder that too do they sell even one one yeah I don't know who knows the car does I have a shadow the sun is I don't know where the sun is melting as a shadow I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that that city escape you know first of all those buildings are made out of four polygons and they look like twisted metal on the ps1 mm-hmm yeah this looks like GTA 3 yep yep even worse yeah but there's infinite variations of this low fire racing game you know it's yeah it's not even attempt it like well this one has ducks in it aren't ducks funny like it's just nothing there's nothing to it what's interesting on the listing there's a publisher listed but no developer so maybe it's just maybe the whole thing is just a i generated the publisher developed it by going make me a racing game with fast and furious cars I would like to think that like this is the all these are generated by like some kind of video game college class yeah and they're like well here's how you can actually publish something on an Nintendo platform they don't care nobody's watching the gates just just slap it up and then you get to do that for your your class thesis that would be the positive that needs on z though I want one of those forever now I can in need for race in virtual form all right two more here before two more here to show off so the next one is I picked this for two reasons sheriff park ranger and this one actually like just what's saying the gameplay doesn't look terrible here but I picked this because we have another just a magnificent piece of AI slop that they've used for their cover art here but also I'm pretty sure park rangers don't have a sheriff I don't think that's a real sheriff park ranger they made up they made a whole video game a whole real video game and then like should we pay somebody you know two hundred dollars to make us a logo at a piece of cover art like no I'm just gonna slap it up yep yeah made the game but listen to the listen to the tagline for this game patrol deeper react faster protect harder what is the gameplay of this drive your patrol truck flash your lights in order in the wild is this act getting bigger the truck in the hat has issues I think that this may be a mod mod for a sneak king yeah he arrested somebody well look at look at his hat right there joker can you go back to where he was in the car it looks like you're in there that look normal yeah as there's the shot of him in the car I thought it was too small it no it's well it probably is and they'll fix it this this soon this this is where the big hat the truck is his his humor in the front and pick up in the back what's being generated as he drives so oh look at that that is not how we looked at the rest of the seats well maybe that's the progression yeah there you go that's where you go that's where you go okay man I'm on team team hat now I was not on board with this but you're absolutely right at the end of the trailer it's tiny again so it's not telling you like if you play this game you can have wide hat it might just be wait you see it grow as he drives away it might be it's not far look at it look at it look at it one more time yeah we're look at it's ready for a Friday day of the beach this wife is gonna love that hat yeah he goes for patrolling the forest to gardening like real fast I think you're right I think it's a south bar I think you're like a little that is like this new new forest ranger with this tiny hat you said things out there campfires okay that can't fish your wish or lice that's share a park right I kind of want to play this one that was the best one so far okay that was good I'm crying all right I don't have one more do over hold off because the the key art to this one is the best the key art to this one is truly unbelievable somebody just read this title first um okay this is the end of the beginning of courage reasoning and seaweed 10 okay I'll say again the end we're gonna recap the end of the beginning of courage reasoning and seaweed 10 now java let's show everybody what the key art for this is this is real this is on the e-shop right now well they use the Oxford comma yeah I appreciate that what what's happening under of what are we doing like they just smeared it and then show show them what this game looks like jobbert it's sims it's just it's probably a visual novel yeah but there are nine other ones I don't know I didn't bother to look I don't know what the first time I know but also it says on the list there supported languages Japanese it doesn't even support English everything's empty except the title yeah yeah maybe that's what's happening I think maybe post apocalyptic yeah maybe it's post apocalyptic it will be that's the end of the beginning the beginning of courage and reasoning and sea courage I mean maybe that title screen is better than like you know it being a i-slop yeah yeah I was trying to think what is better just a really low res image of the of the of the just the plain text title or a slap yeah I don't know this is this is probably more attention getting it's probably more eye catching so jobbert click out of this you see it how it actually looks on the listing page yeah that's how it looks what what's not even here why is there a smear I really don't understand the smear did like somebody like accidentally in Photoshop after for some reason putting text on this and clipping it out like spear the paint thing over it I don't it was only a buck 50 though yeah yeah yeah wait till it goes on sale if you all wait I'll wait till it's 91% off if you're listening to this show you can find us on YouTube but you can watch you can see what we're seeing yes that morality it says the battle between you key and the dread begins good the end of the beginning waiting I mean I don't what's worse just the fact this is really on the eShop right now and you can pay money for it or that I only know this exists because Nintendo emailed me about it I get a Nintendo download email every Thursday when they refresh the eShop Nintendo list out all the games links to it so Nintendo is like here you go and in no fans here's a new game that you can use your game skewed second I don't know Bowser get that email I guess I never got that yeah it's why quit I guess I didn't realize Damon I thought you were just finding these on your own they're in Nintendo's email Nintendo the new release emails these to me every Thursday good anyone who signed up for the never never unsubscribe I will these are great I will know and that my friends is the Nintendo seal of quantity hey you know we have like super fans that track our stats for 20 questions the real super fans for this would be people that play these games and report back with review yeah a couple of them seemed okay so I would play the triple A1 I'm only into that seaweed one that that's like a real that's a real like you know like Polish developer they're making at least real video games all right let's check in with the listeners hey listeners listeners and viewers remember we can always reach us at the email address gamesgoop at agent.com just like oh no big Tony style I'm a style big Tony style says time is flying and little Tony style is about to turn three years old with a toddler around the house my game time has dropped pretty significantly and I'm finding myself leaning more on games that have a solid quick loop to them my reason go to is the re-release of plans versus zombies one of my all-time favorites while I was playing last night and maybe wonder what happened to those old style pop cap games I think about plans versus zombies too and wonder if these types of games fell victim to mobile gaming monetization or is it that I'm not looking hard enough for similar pop cap style games one can only hope that one day we'll see the release of a pebble three such as they got EA to write they got EA to know yeah and I mean pop cap pop cap still around but yeah they've not been they're not making games like that anymore yeah plans for the zombies too was overly aggressive monetization mess and then they started doing like the garden warfare games did it two of those at least it goes that their one isn't it maybe they're not nobody knows and then we remade plans for zombies last year yeah yeah yeah that's good that was good yeah well also I agree I'm very much into like you know games that I could just play for 20 30 minutes that's why I've been playing so much 80s and ball pits like that so I was gonna suggest ball pit like the the whole survivors like genre although it's interesting it's like you know the runs in vampire survivors start out as being 30 minutes but you pretty quickly unlock a hyper mode and like a double speed mode and like that's that's kind of becoming a thing in these games is like they start out slow and then they eventually give you options of like just do everything twice as fast like ball pit does the same thing um people like that mega bonk yeah mega bonk is that a puzzle game no it's a survivor survivor it's like it's a 3d version of the garlic like okay so very fun that I mean that doesn't quite scratch the same itch I mean look those games are not as good as like pop cap at their peak to be honest those are some like genuinely incredible video games but they're good from like like I just want to zone out and just like play something short for a while and make progress and feel good like so yeah I mean ball pit would be a good candidate for that when did those games kind of get clobbered by clash games and cookie kingdoms and stuff like that yeah I mean I mean big Tony styles absolutely right that those games went away because they're like well we could release a really really great game and sell it for five or ten or twenty dollars or we could like make the same game and we could sell people twenty dollar like bullshit things just forever and we would will and then and then zingga you know then we'll be billionaires um so they're still out there on steam you know like they're still not impossible to find on platforms like game pass but that's that's why they went away sadly it's free to play free to play crushed them is it really no appetite for so think about the old pop cap plans for zombies pegal even like a zoom-a the jeweled bookworm I loved all those games like single screen simple you know puzzle games Nintendo used to make games like that Nintendo had a bunch of puzzle games like Dr. Mario and Tetris attack and all this stuff like even on console candy crush now that yeah but like I would play these games like if Nintendo made a new puzzle game on switch you I would absolutely play it I just I don't know why that I don't know why you know console developers stock doing it as well yeah I mean they're so it's like you know I I really like balloons tower defense is a really good tower defense game so like that stuff is still out there and there was what was the pegal RPG that I mean it wasn't made by pop cap what peglin is that what it was called oh maybe but there was there was I mean there's been a few there's been a few like sort of rogue like pegal RPG like experiences like bounce around and kill the enemies and level up and you know go on runs um so yeah so I think a good place to to look is when Xbox or Nintendo does their indie directs that's where you can see a lot of the stuff that like doesn't end up getting a lot of height behind the trailer and that and they're usually smaller games there's a lot of there's a lot of kind of like I don't know they're not quite blotter of likes but these like gambling coated rogue likes where but they don't have free to play garbage in them is just in the roguelike there's um there's lots of daggers yes lots and daggers pick clover pit clover pit and then there's an upcoming one that it's basically like bilottro but it's a coin pusher hmm oh fun called called the rac coin dude those coin pusher stress me out yep and there's there's actually a different coin pusher herok like to which is funny um so that's that's where a lot of that stuff kind of migrated to I think well I miss puzzle games yeah Nintendo should make the last one until did dr. Luigi right yeah they do they do pick cross games they do stuff like that um yeah they need to bring back pushmose we say this every episode yep okay uh just in last week we went over some uh video game 20 questions stats uh from mat read but it didn't include the like the win-loss facial stats so I asked if that could be um uh added as well but I was confused there's more than one person collecting all these stats so Greg Greg Kelly writes in to say huh after listening to the most recent episode I know it's confusing there are a few fans who love both their scoops and stats and fun enough both mat read and I are from Massachusetts so here's a quick summary of the two different stats we each cover me I maintain Greg Kelly I maintain the video game 20 questions dashboard and keep track of the win-loss ratio quickest win uh etc and the mat read has been uh sending in his crazy cool stats where he specifically tracks all the games mentioned during each segment throughout the year so our stats are different and I think complement each other nicely Matthew and I have actually been coordinating over a Facebook messenger to send in our different stats to you around the same time anyway I hope all my stats below are the missing pieces that you were looking for to read when Justin is back so here we go twenty-five oh right that what confused us there is that they're both from Massachusetts yeah that's that and then they don't have to fight to the death that's true so that's good so in twenty-five you guys we played a total of 47 games okay of 20 questions and one 33 of them which you'll easily with the win rate of 70.2 percent I think that's a pleasing win rate like you don't want it to be too high or too low it is the most c minus answer I've ever heard to a c minus rate I don't know I give you it will be always one it via born you can you can tell I'm on 28% of the episodes still how about 90 90.1 would be nice yeah at least get the A yeah I think a 70 is a very appropriate you guys are parents I can with this group 70 is not bad it is down a little from twenty-twenty four and twenty-four your win rate was 80.9 percent yeah I did feel that so last year your average questions for a win was 17.6 questions but that was down from twenty-four seventeen point two questions your quickest win this year is eight questions episode 809 holiday your longest winning streak was ten episodes in a row from September 17th and November 20th and your longest losing streak was only two episodes in a row okay that's been that 10 episodes in the hospital yeah a 10 streaks really good yeah that's that's very crosses over three months so Sam played the most number of games last year 45 games he had a win rate of 71.1 percent Justin played 35 games had a win rate of 74.3 percent and Mark only played 20 games and had a win rate of 80 percent yeah you got to be kind kind to yourself Mark no boy here we go none of you have the highest win rate it's got I'm sure somebody played once and a side of percent no it's Nick Nick LeMont played 16 games and he has 81.3 percent wow somebody played one game come on yeah that doesn't count um pair pair only played four games he has a 50 percent win rate wow yikes these are not good stats nope anyway thank you for the uh clarification Greg Kelly and the very fun stats and that brings us to this week's video game 20 questions which comes from Danny from Colorado and Danny says I've been getting really into redacted games recently and I'm currently replaying redacted I've always wanted to try redacted and thinking about picking up redacted anyways I thought this would be a good 20 questions game okay with that well it's not a good 20 questions game was last week when nobody listened to a single answer and then we just haven't repeated the entire time suggested that we still got help me this week got it got it on 20 last week right yeah what was a win we didn't get kung fu though that was a brutal we yeah that was tough what was the redacted stuff from that email oh it was a year to get oh you almost got me excellent okay um is this uh is this a role playing game or platformer or shooter no I thought those might be things that he was getting really into this is game of 3D graphics no I bet it's a roguelike because I've been getting into roguelikes is it a roguelike season is it a roguelike or card game or or or or garlic like no this is why I can't remember the answer we're never reading it this one is it from before the uh this century no so a 2D game but not a platformer and not a roguelike from the last 25 years and also not that other stuff but that was more likely to be 3d did Sony Microsoft or Nintendo publish this game yes that's five oh that's so good all right didn't did Sony publish this game no did Nintendo publish this game yes oh it got a lot of Nintendo's in the Mario games but it's not a platformer 2D 2D Nintendo game from the last 25 years yeah like Mario wonders but it's not super but it's not a platformer no wait when did we yeah well okay that makes us yeah okay just in our Metroid vanias platformers yes Nick could have used your help last week I mean are you jumping around did you have platforms that float in the air in this game that's out of my skin Damon I'm just saying if the answer is yes then it's a platformer this this platforms Nick could have used you as he could have used a friend last week um let's see here okay so was this game is this game said in the mushroom kingdom or a high roll kingdom universes no it could it could be a it could be like Donkey Kong march of the minis it could be a puzzle game Damon was just saying he wants Nintendo to make puzzle games oh I guess maybe that's set in the Mario universe though well but no but you said mushroom kingdom and I think those games are in New York I don't know he we're in the dark kingdom okay man what is this is the main character of this game on the smash roster no well actually know that because I've been playing a lot of smash brothers with Kinga recently nice that's awesome huh not unsmash I mean I don't know who do you mean Damon I don't think I've settled on a man yet I like to pick random and Kinga hates that he hates it when I do random he wants me to pick a character nice to he needs to know how to counter you yeah maybe you're always you never let him know your next move that's interesting that is interesting I'm just I'm very now I'm absorbed in that and then he wants me to like he wants me to pick his character he's like who should I be daddy I don't know whoever you want no tell me who to be okay Mario Yoshi yeah no I don't want to be Yoshi oh yeah so you want you to pick the character he's thinking of there's not a lot of games in Nintendo publishers that don't have smash stars there's like you know a hundred great books type stuff I mean it could be it could be like a like stadium games or any S remix and not have a person that you are like a main person that you are I mean it could or you know a meat like you know I know it's not Wii Sports because this is a 2D game but like something like that did this come out before 2012 yes that is 10 maybe it is smash because the can you play as the what are you the hand what is that what you are like him wait it was the 2012 yes yeah it's before 2012 okay so so we hear we you yeah but yeah oh well or game cube or game boy or yes what I think it's a handheld game that's what I'm thinking yeah could be pick cross something like that is it is it a handheld game yes hey could be could be medios is the maybe it's Dr. Kawashima is the character okay I could be brain training so yeah the brain yeah is this game mainly controlled with the stylus hmm well you have to think about it so we know it's on DS now well if you can it would just be an option you don't have to use it okay is this a is this a puzzle or adventure game no oh so it's not hotel dusk it's not medios it's not Sudoku any of those what am I allowed to ask to hear his note one more time because now I have so much more context I want to hear the note sure I've been getting really into redacted games recently and I'm currently replaying redacted I've always wanted to try redacted and thinking about picking up redacted anyways I thought this would be a good 20 questions game yeah I mean that doesn't plan it brain training that's for sure no and we know it's not a role playing game or puzzle game or platformer and it doesn't star somebody on the smash roster and Nintendo published it on the DS or 3DS and it's two new Nintendo dogs yeah but it's two you know but and you have to use this title it's animal crossing yeah can you can play as village you can be new leaf villager is in what we play as a player yeah you do play as villager yeah it's weird that you're the only human in animal crossing and everybody else is an animal what does apple with a cat maybe some 2d game probably DS not 3DS maybe 3DS though man I mean there's a lot of like you know 2d but like so okay it can't be Kirby can't be can't be Yoshi do this game come out as a cartridge yes okay so it's not like a downloadable only weird ass Nintendo game we're never gonna remember this is I think it's gonna be more of the lifestyle sim like Tomodachi life type things something like that mees sports I mean what about like why would he ever want to revisit it though but it's not so it's not you know it's not like ace attorney because those are adventure games and Nintendo didn't publish them but like not even any you know any visual novel I mean we said no platformers too right yep geez I don't know where to go this we have enough questions to get it I just don't know where to go um does this game have a sequel this game does not have a sequel and that's 15 you know it could be a rhythm game and it could be like elite beat agents or when Dan oh elite beat edges is a really good one or that what was that guitar hero game yeah there was a head that I don't know unplugged or whatever that's not published by Nintendo but I yeah probably not I the only thing about would and I don't like to met a game Damien's answers but I think that that might be stylus only or at least it's heavily stylus well I had a we version two well that one didn't elite beat agents didn't but the other game either the original version of eliminate we could just ask rhythm game but if there's more we could try to get a two-ferre warrior where you don't play as warrior warrior yeah so this would be like is this a is this a rhythm game or puzzle do we ask puzzle you did ask puzzle that's not a puzzle game I would keep I would throw some other genres I can't do anything what's the what's the warrior where genre how about this is this is this is this is this is this is sports sim or mini game collection no this is not a game I mean yeah maybe it's the 3ds chat yeah maybe it's maybe it's not a game maybe it's like the Lou app that you could like you just wonder I would because 100 class vowels okay you've got three questions and a guess electro plankton's rhythm yeah well music we're not like uh yeah you didn't ask RPG yeah it could just be an RPG game and we did ask RPG oh we did okay yeah that was like one of the first genres that I eliminated dang what about like uh racing did we eliminate strategy we did not like advance wars and stuff no no we didn't no it could totally be advance wars duel strike or um I don't I uh port the fourth one ruin whatever it's called yeah yeah you must spell something with ds right yeah that was duel strike and then they made another one that was ruined that's right those seem like games that you could use a stylist but that you probably and they also are also not in Smash Brothers I bet that's what it is and they're more relevant like like people could be playing well we have three questions for us only has a remake so and then there's also but then there's also fire emblem fire emblems yeah but that has lots of sequels direct sequels I don't think there's a sped off oh wait did David asked David said this one doesn't have yeah I and maybe maybe fire emblems not sequels I don't know I don't know yeah but no and then and then days of ruin was the last fire in the game although they did remake they did advance yeah I mean I guess we can just go with this is an advance wars game yes a so it's so then is this is this advance wars days of ruin yes it is nicely job yep 2008 on Nintendo DS days great stuff a good job who mark you're the one that said it right yeah man yeah you went through a lot of genres before you got to I mean I love the advance wars I said days of ruin thank you thank you I just said advance wars because I don't know what any of them are called yeah no that's why did you decide to roll the dice on this and not dual strike meet who we don't because this is this is the last one yeah Damon said there's no sequel and this is the last one oh so this was a sequel I didn't realize that I thought they were all to spinoffs no well I mean it's the fourth one in the series you know no that makes sense I totally I totally see the logic but but but so so it's both right this game the the four advance wars one and two and then dual strike and then days of ruin are direct sequels to one another but then they're also I mean you know there's no sequels now because the recent ones are remake of one and two so correct yeah and then advance wars was the first one released in the United States but that franchise had been there's fancom wars and I come in yes and like those never came out here I wonder if that's like I've never played that I'm a calm wars probably not yeah I mean that's a funny title well the fire and it was the famicom in Japan no I know so it's she that's on it's just Nintendo wars it's really funny it's like it's like it's wars this is what it's a little bit weird because it was you know like super Nintendo wars Nintendo wars but then advance wars was the first one to come out in the United States and it was on the Game Boy Advance and then that name stuck even when they weren't on the Game Boy Advance anymore yeah nice and this this one went dark and gritty it doesn't have like the cartoonish art style which in my mind was like this was a low point but I look back at the reviews and it totally got good reviews at the time so I don't know well it did kill the franchise yeah that's true oh no it's a big big fun fact I just learned today so this is out in 2008 it was not released in Japan until 2013 wow Nintendo did not really put this out in Japan until 2013 the famicom the famicom wars fans they had a wait they had to wait time so maybe this was adapted to be like kind of a targeted at our region but then like why is it anime like it's it's all very yes it's funny that this is I mean it is it is much darker and grittier than the other advance wars games which are very bright and very cheerful but looking at this footage now I'm like yeah this is still pretty bright cheer like do you remember though like you're like Jim from the office commanding the army like he's like a totally cool like you know like kid that that's the plot of these games so frequently it's like this one this 18 year old is gonna run the military everybody's kind of cool like so it's cool and now I can't remember I mean this is by far my least played advance wars games so it's like I said that this was a direct sequel to the other three and I actually can't even remember if it is now it might not have been did you catch who the developer was on the screen yes intelligence systems yeah which is not Nintendo even though they work almost exclusively with Nintendo it's not even owned by Nintendo in any way yeah yeah that's why game freaks making some rando ask again now I mean intelligence intelligence systems is such a strange company because they you know they made these they make fire emblem they make a they made worry aware um you know so it's like weird I don't know just like a weird weird catalog of stuff they put together they go all the game free game that's coming out which I know the one like it's like a 3d something of reincarnation or I forget what it's called yeah it looks strange it looks dope it looks cool intelligence systems was created in 1983 two developed games for Nintendo and the original group worked on Mario brothers wild gunman duck hunt Hogan's alley donkey on three but they've always been completely independent from the tindo it's wild yeah where would Hogan's alley have been without their help it's true you imagine it's true that would have been the real days of ruin yeah Danny from Colorado was just saying he's really getting into strategy games and he's replaying fire emblem three houses always wanted to try advance wars thinking about picking up days of ruin well I'm sure he liked our torturous answers to our questions I think I mean I'm on I had to forget like we were intelligent systems made pushmo and crashmo yeah that's them and they made a bunch of water to bring this up it's an open wound yeah and and paper Mario they're just a weird like it's just like if you look at their game library it's just kind of bizarre like I don't know like they're all really good but just really unique I don't know what an interesting development house well also we have what a weird and like a successful line of work to choose to go into just to make games for Nintendo and do it for decades right I mean isn't that kind of calm is retro owned by Nintendo yes but but I know what you mean but Nintendo does like Sakurai doesn't technically work for Nintendo he doesn't know well yeah how like there's a lot of you're right that into like retro is owned by Nintendo but they do a lot of you know stuff like intelligent systems and um wait you're looking at the Wikipedia page yeah did you see that they made uh end of the beginning number nine which is called seaweed negative one so that's the origins it was these guys they're still cranking about today all right well nicely job thank you for the suggestion Danny
