Summary

Tesla's new cybercabs with no steering wheel or pedals are being tested but show accident rates four times higher than human drivers, raising safety concerns. The episode also covers Elon Musk's predictions about AI creating universal abundance and eliminating retirement, plus AI's growing role in fast food operations.

Insights
  • Tesla's fully autonomous vehicles lack safety redundancies (no manual controls) compared to competitors like Waymo, creating significant liability and safety risks
  • Elon Musk's repeated AI timeline predictions (claiming AGI 'this year' annually) suggest overoptimistic forecasting that may not reflect technical reality
  • AI is rapidly moving from back-end operations to customer-facing roles in service industries, fundamentally changing business models and employment
  • Musk's vision of AI-driven universal abundance conflicts with practical concerns about near-term job displacement and retirement security
  • Safety incident data (4x higher than human drivers) represents a critical barrier to public adoption of fully autonomous vehicles

Last week, Tesla celebrated a milestone. Its first production cybercabs, the ones sold to the public, rolled off the assembly line. Meanwhile, pre-production models are being tested in Austin, Texas, Fremont, California, and some cold weather testing in Buffalo, New York. And these tests are frightening. Waymo uses modified Jaguar electric SUVs, so a human driver can easily get in and take over. But Tesla robo-taxis have no steering wheel, no brake pedals, and no accelerators. Accidents and incidents are four times as high as human drivers. An incident means property damage only. An accident means injuries. Both are crashes. As a former Tesla owner, I assure you that its autopilot system does not work, and it's definitely not ready for taxis. Sign up for my free newsletter at GetKim.com. And now a clip from my weekend show, The Kim Commando Show. it's pretty much the best radio show in the world, but I may be just a little biased. Sit back and enjoy. Let's talk about saving for retirement. Do you have any money saved for retirement? Of course. Do you? Yeah, almost 84 bucks. Excellent. But think what that's going to be like when I retire at 105. That's going to be something. Elon Musk says you should not be saving for retirement. No. And he's not going to be cutting you a check, in case you're wondering. On the Moonshots with Peter Diamandis podcast, Musk said artificial intelligence will create such an abundance of resources that anyone can buy anything that they want at any time. Huh? He doesn't just see universal high income in our future. He predicts major social unrest from so much change happening fast. I'm not following at all. How is the existence of AI gonna let me buy a Lamborghini Countach? For free. How Because you are going to have all this extra time because you not going to be working Right not making money But you be doing your own thing off to the side using AI making money But you're not going to be constrained by the normalcy of going to work for a set amount of money. But I still need to retire at some point and not work on anything. And then I need my retirement. There'll be a little bit of a universal income. Just a little bit. Musk also predicted that artificial general intelligence will be here this year. Last year, he said it was last year. Okay. This year, he said it's going to be this year. All right. What about next year? And then it's going to be next year. Gotcha. So AI is now getting into the drive-thru window. I thought this was pretty interesting. At McDonald's, AI now quickly weighs the bag before it gets handed to you in the drive-thru. because AI knows precisely down to a tenth of an ounce what a Big Mac and large fries weighs versus three regular hamburgers and fries. So it'll just warn the person working the window, hey, you're handing them the wrong product because this doesn't match the weight. Now at Papa John's, AI does everything. There's no person on the other end. AI will guide you through ordering whatever pizza that you want, hold the mushrooms, extra pepperoni, whatever it is, because AI is now hitting the takeout business. So you're talking to a chat bot when you call in for your pizza. Yes. Don't forget the butter sauce, you computer. Butter sauce? Papa John's pizza. Garlic butter. Garlic butter sauce. Oh, that does not sound good. Is it good? Yeah. I'm getting shakes heads from the rest of everyone else in this building. Meanwhile, I'm looking at you like, ew, what is that?
