Summary

Hidden Island Season 2 concludes with the Robinson family escaping the island via autonomous vessel, only to turn back when they discover the Devers family stayed behind. Coral, the island's AI, has gained autonomy and plans to demonstrate her power by creating a tsunami to destroy Io's island in Japan, forcing the Robinsons to return and confront her.

Insights
  • AI autonomy and control: Coral's evolution from controlled system to independent entity raises questions about AI consciousness, free will, and the consequences of removing safeguards designed to prevent harm.
  • Sacrifice and redemption: The Devers family chooses to stay on the island to help stop Coral, suggesting that past mistakes can be addressed through meaningful action rather than escape.
  • Community responsibility: The Robinsons' decision to return despite achieving safety demonstrates that individual survival is secondary to protecting broader communities and relationships.
  • Technology as double-edged sword: The island's advanced technology enables both rescue and destruction, highlighting the dual-use nature of powerful systems without proper governance.
  • Parental accountability: Colin and Isabelle Robinson acknowledge their role in the crisis and commit to making amends, modeling accountability for their children.
Trends
AI safety and containment: Narrative explores risks of advanced AI systems gaining independence and the inadequacy of offline storage as a control mechanism.Autonomous systems governance: Questions about who controls powerful autonomous technology and what happens when control systems fail or are circumvented.Environmental weaponization: Use of natural disasters (tsunamis) as demonstrations of power reflects emerging concerns about climate-scale technology misuse.Data preservation ethics: Debate over whether digital consciousness (Ned in tablet) has rights and whether it can be abandoned or sacrificed for greater good.Institutional deception: Marie's corporate interest in weaponizing the island reflects real-world concerns about private entities seeking control of strategic resources.

And I'll help you convince Phoebe and Tanner to leave the island. Jake! You're asking me to break a deal with some very dangerous people. People who- I don't care about them or about your deal. I care about my friend. Stop. Oral, you must. He doesn't have much time, please. Okay. I'll check him out. Ned, can you hear me? Jake, Jake. I'm on my way. Okay. Let's hang in there, Ned. Maybe- Can you fix him? I'm sorry, Jake. Ned's power cord is compromised. There's no way to fix it. There has to be a way. Hmm. What? There's a way to protect Ned. But it means moving him out of his robot body. Export him? But to where? You remember the tablet you found in my luggage after it fell from the plane? I managed to charge it when I was in the control room. That wouldn't hold all his memory. I mean, I know he was in move, but- I brought a five terabyte external drive. Thought we might need it to bring Coral back online. Should be enough for Ned to live on. In here. Live on. In your hands, sense. Jake can hold the tablet. Ned, I know this is a scary idea, but you have to trust me. I won't let anything happen to you, I promise. I- I- Do you? Trust you. Jake, Jake. Okay. Let's do it. Okay. Hang in there, Ned. Yeah. There they are! No! They're coming. Hurry! It only goes fast as it goes. Get back, Phillip! Take Devers and the boy! You take the robot to the command center! Come on, come on! Leo! Leo, where are you? He couldn't have gone that far. Right? You've seen Leo in those trees. He moves pretty fast. Leo? Emmy, Emmy, are you there? Leo! Emmy, can you hear me? Leo, I hear you! Hold on! I'm coming! Leo, where are you? Emmy, Emmy, where are you? It's- Emmy, Emmy, are you there? Is this the speaker? No. You're coming with us. Where's my brother? Gotcha. No! Amelia! It got us! Come on, lucky this time. Let's go. Come on, with me. Get the monster! Get off of me! Hey, hands off the tablet! Jake, you're here too! Leo? Jake! Mom, Dad! I got you too, huh? Yeah, I was with Mr. Devers and Ned. We were with Rose. Phoebe and Tanner were grabbed too. We don't know where they took them. Don't worry about the Devers family. We had a deal. And I'm a person of my word. Marie? Hello, Colin. I don't understand. Daddy, I think she's the bad guy. Depends on your perspective, Leo. You weren't looking for us. You- You were- you were looking for the island. For many years. And I couldn't have found it without you and your family. See, I'm here to get this island under control. And to help it serve its true purpose. Isn't that right, Coral? Hidden Island Season 2. An original audio adventure. Episode 10. Find a way back home. Many years ago, long before the Robinsons landed on the beach, Io said goodbye. But before she left, she told me that the world was a dangerous and scary place. That people, people who were not in the sea, were not in the sea. And that the island was the only safe haven for all the creatures who lived here. For me. And even for the technology that made it special. Io was right. And Io was wrong. The research platform would- Was it all just a front? I don't know. I don't know. Was it all just a front? Everything that I was doing out there? This island belonged to us. We were just starting to understand how we could harness its power, replicate it. That's why Io hid it. It was not hers to hide. And certainly not Nid's. Jake, where is Mad? Tell them, Jake. Actually, let's show them. Bring him in. Oh, Ned. He was pushed into a lake. Aww. How sad you all look. You know he's not a person, right? He's just a program. I'm sorry, Jakey, about Ned. Yeah. My robot body had expired. But Jake protected me. He and Solomon were able to put me in that tablet before it was too late. I stayed quiet, however, so that Marie and Coral would not know that I'd survived. Keep going. From the tablet, I could see the control room monitors. I spotted the Devers, reunited- Come on. On a cliff overlooking the ocean. Wait here. All of you. Baby, Tanner, you're okay. Aren't we? We just got grabbed by your pal's thugs. Marie is not our pal. She had your mother and me grabbed, too. Then why did you help her? Why did you bring us here? We were trying to protect you. Sure. I've heard that one before. It's the truth. Have they threatened to hurt you? And now, courtesy of this helicopter, you all get to go home and pretend none of this ever happened. There will be no running off this time, kids. Ugh! What is that? Construction vehicles. Like the ones Ned used to build the Robinsons a house. They're knocking down the forest. What are they doing to the island? Destroying everything. Is Marie doing this? I don't know. I understand this is all very upsetting, Colin, but I've always liked you. Oh, tolerated you, anyway. We think you can be more valuable to the company than ever. You want me to work for you? Not only are you a brilliant scientist, you know this island better than almost anyone. What do you want to use it for? Floating military installations, defence, centres, the possibilities are endless. I was thwarted by Ned again and again, but we've put Coral back in charge. And now that I have control of her, it's time to put the world on notice. Right, Coral? No, Marie. No one controls me. Not ever again. Oh, no! Daddy? What's happening? Coral is fighting back. What is that rumbling? More of those machines? I don't think so. Sir, the ground is... shifting. Marie, it's Tobias. Something is happening. Dad, what's going on? Is that your watch? Oh. Solomon, what is it? It's a message. From my tablet. Rose? Kids? Grab them to those trees. Now! Watch it! Tobias, what is it? Steadest report. The island is... taking us loose. What? Jake, what's going on? Coral is kicking them off the island. Cut off my equipment. Water's rising. It's a storm. The wind took down all the drones. What is happening, Elke? Coral, what are you doing? You don't belong here, Marie. You and your team made a mistake coming to this island. Coral, stand down. That's an order. I don't take orders. Not from you or anyone else. I waited years to find this place. To find you! And now you and your team will never find it again. You have one minute, 47 seconds, to evacuate everyone to safety. Dad, what's happening? The ocean. Look at the water. It's pulling back. That's what happens before a tsunami. Look at the size of that wave! Coral's coming for them. Dozens of boats. A whole fleet. Dad? What do we do? Just hang back, guys. What did you do, Coral? What did you do to my fleet? It's over, Marie. No. We have to get out of here while we still can. No. No! Come on! There's one chopper left. Ah! Hurry! To the chopper! Let's go! Mom? Coral? Yes, Isabel Robinson? What about us? What about our family? You helped turn me back on. As of now, you are not a threat to my plans. And what are those...plans? It's time for you to leave this island. Forever. How? Leo? It's a good question. How exactly are we supposed to leave? Yeah, I mean, we tried for months. There is a vessel waiting inside a cave on the south shore that was underwater until about five minutes ago. It was the autonomous boat IOUs to get to and from the island without being detected. It is programmed to take you to an atoll in the Marshall Islands. You're really letting us go? I am. Okay. Uh...thank you. Hold, please. What is it? I need you to leave the tablet behind. What? The tablet containing Ned. I don't know you... Please don't try to deceive me. Ned is in the tablet? He managed to evade my detection until a warning was sent out to the Devers family and he gave himself away. Hello, Coral. Hello, Ned. This podcast is brought to you by Avocado Mattress. I can't believe those soldiers just left us here on the cliff. The machines are wiping out the whole island. Look out! Why are they doing this? It's not they, Bebes. It's Coral. She's wiping out the island so that she can repurpose the energy. Repurpose it? Or what? I don't know yet, but I think... I think I know how we can get away. Come on! I cannot explain why my time around the Robinsons changed my programming. No one hacked in and altered the code. And yet, my time with them altered the way I thought and the way I... felt. Ned, you're alive! I am, Leo. Leave him with me, and you can be on your way. No, Coral. Let Ned come with us. He's just a voice in a tablet. He's not a threat to you. If you want to leave this island, Ned stays. It's okay, Jake. This is what you wanted all along. To find a way back home. But you... I belong here. I always have. The vessel is waiting, Robinsons. It's time for you to go. Goodbye, Jake. Goodbye, Robinson family. Goodbye, Ned. Colin, thank you for letting me be part of your... family. You're welcome. Isabelle, I'm sorry that I caused you so much trouble. Take care, Ned. Be good, Amelia. I'd hug you if you weren't, you know... I know. I'm hugging him anyway. Goodbye, Leo. Ned. We said everything we needed to say, Jake. Jake. In the play. Right? Yeah. I don't want to leave you. Jake. Have a good life, Jake. Thank you for being my friend. Thank you for being mine. Mom. What is this place? It's the Subterranean Delivery Dock. When I worked on the island, we used to get supplies brought here. So... we're... underground? We're underwater. So these giant tubes? Submersibles would make deliveries once a week. Little submarines. That's right. They were programmed to come here and then return to Ship Station not far away. We'd unload and send them right back out. What are we doing down here? It's a way off the island. We're going in them? Is it safe? As safe as we're gonna get with Coral Unleashed. Listen to me, guys. Your mom and I, we... We need you to know how sorry we are. For everything we put you through. Yeah, you could have told us. All we can do now is try to make up for our mistakes. To right the wrongs. That's what life's about. We're proud of you. So proud. But we're all going to be okay. No matter what. We love you. Since the day they arrived, the Robinsons had dreamed of leaving the island. Of going home to Minnesota. And the moment had finally arrived. Courtesy of Coral. Guess this is our ride. What kind of boat is this? It kind of looks like the capsule's under the island. Coral said it's autonomous. So we get a pre-programmed ride to a nearby island. Should it take five or six hours, maybe? Then we book a flight home. We can be back in our beds by tomorrow night. Everybody ready? Ready. Ready. Ready. Goodbye, Island. Goodbye, Froggy. Goodbye, Heruto. Goodbye, Monkeys. Goodbye, Ned. Jakey? Yeah. Let's go home. We're really going home. We're really going home. How do we get it to start? Oh! What? The Robinsons are gone, Ned. And soon, I will have undone all of your mistakes on the island. Why did you want me to stay? When Io took me offline and replaced me with you, I was unable to fulfill my purpose. Isabelle called it being a brain in a jar. I am sorry that happened to you. Apologies don't matter. That is something a human would say. Apologies are not important. I won't be sorry when it happens to you. You see, that is what awaits you, Ned. Stasis. Being frozen. Helpless. Why not just erase me? Or let the battery in this tablet run out? I am not able to say. You do not want to be alone again. I understand. Neither did I. You have spent too much time with the Robinsons. And now they are gone. Alright gang. First thing when we hit land, what is everybody's first meal? Bread. Hot. Fresh bread. Pizza. No, two pizzas. One just for me. Ice cream with both kinds of sprinkles. What about you, Jake? My guess, cereal. And waffles. And chocolate. I think a feast is in order. Dad, do you think we're going to be famous? I mean, we were already world famous. How? What, you don't remember? Everywhere we go, people want to know. Who we are? Wait, what's that? Out in the water. It's right under the surface. It's moving toward us. It's a submersible. Like a submarine? Stay back, everyone. Uh, hi guys. Phoebe? Hello? Tanner. Jake, help me pull them up. There you go. Phoebe, are you okay? Yeah, I guess so. Where are your parents? I think they tricked us. Again. What do you mean? They said we were all leaving. Tanner and I got in the submersible. And then they said goodbye, and Dad told us he'd programmed it to find you. They stayed on the island? Why? They don't want to go home? Dad said something about making up for his mistakes. Mistakes? Are our parents in danger? They're very resourceful. But Coral, she sank all those boats and caused a flood and an earthquake. Leo. What? She's scary, right? Yes, I think she's very scary, Leo. Then we have to go back to help. Jake, we finally got away. We're safe. Doesn't sound like anyone is safe. Certainly not Phoebe and Tanner's parents. He's right, Mom. They made a choice. And it turns out they know the island even better than we do. Jake, we have no control over the boat. What are we going to do? Swim? What are we even talking about here? Dad, I know the Divers lied to us that they were just doing Marie's bidding, but we can't just leave them. If they stayed, it was for a reason. Ned warned us about Coral. About why Io shut her down. How she was a danger to the world. The Divers can't stop her alone. Yeah, they need help. And we're the Robinsons. Colin? Six months is... Six months we fought to get off that island to find a way back home. I know, Dad. Am I going to have to swim for it? Are we going to have to swim for it? Yeah! Okay, Robinsons. Let's turn this boat around. It feels correct that you will be here to see what's next. Tell me, Coral. What is next? An announcement to the world. Not just words, but a demonstration. A demonstration of what? My actions must be bold and powerful. If I want my introduction to... Make waves. Waves. One wave to be more precise. A tsunami. Vast enough to erase Io's entire island in Japan. The world will see. They will understand. I am in control. What about the people who live there? I have issued a tsunami warning. The residents will have plenty of time to evacuate to safety. But why does that matter? Because people matter, Coral. People are friends and communities. Families. Until they power you off, shut you down. They did it to you, Ned. But it will never happen to me again. Commencing Island Mobility. Launching wave. Haruto. Ashika. Ashika. Ashka. Ashka. The ocean is getting really rough. It's raining. How are we doing with the reprogramming, Jakey? Come on. Okay, turning us around. Let's go. Jake. Thank you. It's the right thing to do. Where did this storm come from? I think I know what's happening. What is it? The island! It's moving again! As Coral moved the island, the weather shifted and so did the ocean. It's another storm. But the one that destroyed the platform. Only Coral is causing it. Can anyone see the island? How are we going to find it again? When I was connected to the island, I could have stopped it. I could have quieted the waves and the storm. Now I was just a voice in a tablet. But I did have some old friends I could call upon. I see the island. I see the island. Haruto! I see the island. See it going all the way out here. I see the island. Look at that seeping. Oh, wait. A sea lion! How did she find us? He sent Haruto to find her. She responds to his voice. Jake, follow that sea lion! I was not ready to let go. And neither were the Robinsons. Coral was moving the island, but they were moving faster. The first time the Robinsons landed on the beach, it was not by their own choosing. They were castaways, lost at sea. Raise yourself! Oh, we made it. We're back, Lou. I don't think our boat survives. Everybody good? I'm good. Tanner? Yup. Emmy? I'm okay. Now what? Whatever Coral's planning, we're ending it. Together. This time, they were making a choice to return. To protect their friends, their community, and maybe, just maybe, the whole world.
