Summary

The No Laying Up podcast hosts conduct a draft-style ranking of the greatest PGA Championships in history, selecting four tournaments each across multiple rounds. Three judges—PGA Tour player Max Homa, golf historian Wolfe, and 2002 PGA Champion Rich Beem—evaluate the collections based on memorability, historical significance, and entertainment value, with DJ ultimately winning the competition.

Insights
  • The PGA Championship's rotating venue format creates more unpredictable and dramatic moments compared to other majors, leading to more 'Cinderella story' winners and memorable upsets
  • Historical context and personal memory significantly influence how golf tournaments are valued—judges weighted recency bias and personal experience heavily in their rankings
  • Match play format (pre-1958) produced fundamentally different competitive dynamics and narratives compared to stroke play, with extreme margins of victory and sustained dominance being more common
  • Course quality and venue prestige matter less for PGA Championship memorability than tournament drama, leaderboard chaos, and unexpected winners
  • The PGA Championship's identity crisis—moving from August to May, changing from match play to stroke play, rotating venues—makes it harder to build consistent narrative compared to the Masters
Trends
Golf media and fan engagement increasingly driven by narrative drama and character moments rather than technical golf excellenceHistorical golf content creation limited by archival availability—pre-1990s PGA Championships have minimal video footage, forcing reliance on written records and highlightsPGA Tour player involvement in golf media analysis and commentary becoming more common (Max Homa as judge)Nostalgia-driven golf content consumption favoring tournaments from 1990s-2010s over both very recent and pre-1970s eventsEquipment and rule enforcement controversies (non-conforming grooves, bunker definitions) becoming memorable tournament storylinesVenue restoration and course design becoming significant factors in modern major championship appeal and viewership

哎 Be the right club today. Yes. That's better than most. How about in? That is better than most. Better than most. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to the No Laying Up podcast. Sally here got another draft best of major championships. You guys seem to really dig when we drafted our favorite majors, best majors into our collection. We did it again for the PGA championship. Very different exercise. We break down all of that here as we get into it. We got three new judges this time around. So stick around to the end to see who actually wins the greatest collection draft of PGA championships. We might as well just do these for all four majors this year, assuming this is going to continue to be a hit. So thank you very much for tuning in. I want to give a shout out to our friends at Titleist, of course, Golf Ball Fitting. Massively important. Just asked Cameron Young last summer at the Wyndham Cam moved into the Titleist Pro V1 X double dot golf ball custom performance option that he had already provided feedback on to Titleist R&D during development. It paid off immediately. Cam went out and won by six this week or excuse me that week. Since the move, he's racked up nine top 10 finishes in 14 PGA tour starts one three times, including Sunday at Doral. And of course, the players in March, he's having a career year with his approach play currently tracking towards career best and strokes game approach proximity and greens and regulation. Check out all the stats. He's basically been the second best player in the world, according to True Strokes, gain data golf, whatever you want to judge it by since he switched into this golf ball. And there's no signs of him stopping. He said it best about the new golf ball. This makes golf easier for me and it looks, it looks very easy for him. It just looks like he is not even thinking about the golf shots when he goes and stands over it. So Cam has very unique launch conditions. So the double dot probably isn't the answer for you. That's not what I'm trying to tell you, but I am trying to tell you, no matter your game, that's what it feels like when you find the right golf ball. Go to titleist.com to learn more. You can also check out the titleist YouTube channel and the behind the scenes look into cams journey through testing and fitting into the double dot as well. So without further delay, here's our draft of best PGA's. All right, we're back. You guys are back for some more punishment after I wiped the slate last go around. That's not true. Oh yeah. It was complete. It is kind of true. We could, we could quibble with how he did it, but it is definitely true. Well, just simps. We are back here to draft our best PGA's favorite PGA's. It is, you know, did you want to explain the, the, if people maybe missed the master's draft, explain kind of the thought process of how we're doing this. Yeah. I think we started just trying to get people frothed up for the master's, which is, which is, turns out very easy to do. Right. And so we're just kind of like, well, you know, let's get in a digital room and just start chopping it up about old masters. Everybody pick your favorites, put together a little collection. And then that went well. And we kind of pated ourselves into a corner, I feel like where it's like, well, now we got to do the PGA. And it's just very different exercise. T C. I mean, this is a, this is a very different situation. Yeah. I've never felt more confident that the PGA should just blow everything up. Rethink, rethink at all. A lot of golf course that don't exist anymore. A lot of golf courses in Ohio, as you mentioned, a lot of random places in New York, PGA national. In August, PGA national in August that they did in 1987. I learned a little bit about the PGA one. I learned my memories about this tournament are not nearly as strong as they were, you know, maybe the U.S. Opens or even open championships. A lot of man, that really happened. That, that, that totally happened. A lot of bad AI in this one too. I hope you guys didn't use too much AI in this one. I didn't use any AI. I just want to get that on the record right now. No AI every year. I just like use it to like look some stuff up. It's like, Oh, so and so beat so and so want to play off. I'm like, really? I feel like I would have known that and it turned out that did not happen. Yeah. I saw some, yeah, I saw some of this, this major championship at Medina pulled Tiger Woods equal with Jack Nicholas. For, for all time majors. I was like, I don't think that's quite true. So yeah, we had to kind of just go back to this effect of the drawing board. There were a few in here that were, they were like, Oh, I was on vacation. I was on summer vacation for that. I just straight up didn't know that happened. Yeah. I felt that way too. T.C. I'm also really curious to see where T.C. goes because some of the best ones that I, some of the ones I think are the best are just that courses. T.C. has just, you know, just disowned, disgraced. It's like, where, where will he draw the line? So we know Neil's, Neil's going to pick Belle Reve. And I was going to say, there's one course name that comes up a lot, a lot. Kind of unavoidable. Yeah. It's going to be a really interesting one because I feel like this is a, this is all, it's all predicated on your strategy. We might just be running in four different directions here. I don't know how much we're going to, it's going to be a land grab over the Tiger stuff. Are some people just going to concede that stuff? It's just, it's very interesting. I think it's going to be a good one. I think we're going to be able to concede that stuff. It's just, it's very interesting. We know what the judges are. Some, so he's going to dig up. So despite being extremely transparent with the process last time, these guys did what they do or saw losers wind about the judges, corruption, simps, I believe was the phrase that came about. No historians. As we go to record this one, we only have one judge officially lined up. That is Max Homa. Hopefully I still go to Tiger simp. That's, that's a good point. We look up max home of PJ championship results. We're going to get some more historical people involved in this one. And you know, we'll, we'll, you'll see at the end kind of who our judges are. Cause you'll learn. We don't know that as, as a recording right now, but that's good. That's even, even more just cook your food. T C. I'm going to know, I'm worried and we need somebody in the 31 thousand. Cause this is a PGA of America production here. Here's the only hesitation I have here is just based on the you know, the outlandish kind of, you know, childish behavior you guys put forth after the last one, like the chance to act childish between recording and deciding the judges like trying to, you know, oh, I drafted historical. That means we need to get this guy on. I need this guy to be my judge. I can see that coming. I think we could gerrymander the judges. If we all get the pick one. No, we're not all picking one. You know what? I might have to outsource this to Cody. I think. Yeah. Don't raise your hand. I think we're going to get a little bit of a little bit of a kick. Yeah. Don't raise that. Do anything. Get him. No, I'm going to get Seth. Get him. Get him in the building. He's got a dog in this fight anymore. You're going to have to draft the Keegan one. If that's the case. What? Okay. So explain the collection. Dige again. What are, what are we drafting? We're drafting this. You want the best. Collection of PGA championships, but kind of explain that, that kind of process. Well, I think this just kind of naturally. process. Well, I think this just kind of naturally, uh, happened last time where it's like, the, the analogy we kept using was like records on a shelf, right? You're trying to, you're trying to amass some collectibles, which is much easier again with the masters. Uh, I think that it is necessarily with the PJ championship, even though there's far more PJ championships, I guess slightly, slightly more. Uh, but yeah. So I think we were kind of looking at it, you know, Randy was trying to have these unique championships. That's where he went with his collection for the masters. It was, he picked one of ones as he said, he picked the first international winner. I forget what other bad bad the first masters ever first masters. Uh, Horton hears a who, uh, and I don't know, something else, uh, that he had Neil, you know, had a good, a good one go until he freaked out at the edge. He had great winners. Jack, my girl, Gavi, she saw what I was doing. I went that I'll do Danny will it. I'm standing by that one. I had my collection. I had a bunch of feel good records, you know, Rory, Spieth, uh, you know, Ben Crenshaw, things of that nature. T.C. More than just the winner. Like that's an important, I don't think the judges understood that. That's the process of getting to the winner. T.C. had the bad boys. That's right. That's right. Just at some point, you just have to come to terms with your collection sucked. Well, T.C. went with the bad boys, which was a, yeah, just very unfun collection. You know, we talking about, you know, Phyll, uh, you know, get pee, right? That's right. Yeah. I forget who else was on that. Oh, Greg Norman's collapse in 96. Uh, and then solid kind of just, you know, in that vacuum of, of strategy, solid just kind of picked up all the, all the bangers and all the best masters. Yeah. Yeah. Which is great. You know, congratulations. This is more interesting though, because I think you got to, you got to lobby a little bit more. Uh, now I'm not talking about the back room dealing. You guys are going to be doing, uh, of course, but like, you got to lobby for the, for the history of the one you're choosing. Cause it's not everything rolls off the tongue of like, oh, yeah, I forgot about that. It's kind of like, Oh, I'm just now learning about this particular PGI. I did not know this happened. Uh, you have to make the case for some of these that I'm anticipating because yeah, the memories on this bridge, you'll, you'll fix 1935 Johnny revolt. Oh, Tommy armor. Uh, that'd be Tommy armor. The second, you know, No, the first, the way the armor boys work, the silver Scott was the original. He was, he's goaded. Number two was a doctor, UNLV team doctor. Not very good at golf. Three kind of goaded 25, 30 year pro and then four, you know, he's not, he's goaded, but he's not, not that other way off. Yeah. So they think that that V five will be goaded at golf. That's, that's, it skips a generation. V that's really good. So we, we said this, we, we're going to do the draft order for this in, uh, in order of how you finished in our master's pool, not the master's draft, but our master's pool that we did ahead of that. You guys let me get Rory and Kim young at the snake into that surprise, surprise. Yeah. That one was rigged too. Yeah. I don't know how, but it was rigged. You guys got all the good draft picks and you left me Rory and Kim young. Thanks for that. Yeah. Let me bracing a John Robb. I don't know how that, yeah, that didn't go so well. So all that to say the order will be me, then Neil, then TC, then DJ, Randy's unable to be with us today, uh, because he is on vacation. Yeah. He hates the PJ's. College is an objector to the PJ championship as well. We will be snaking from there. So DJ will go five TC six, Neil seven, I'm eight, and then we will repeat the process all the way to four rounds, four rounds, a collection of four PGA championships. Unless we decide to add a fit. Yeah. Unless you really hate your teams that you tried to do at the master's draft, which only made my team stronger. So do that. Would you pick up your last pick? What do we did? Oh, that's right. I think you beat your whole team for sure. He definitely did. Any macro PGA championship takeaways we want to want to get on the record or you want those just come out naturally match play was sick. That's the big one for me. It was a glorious last chance. I think added, added juice to this major. Glory's last shot. Last shot. I mean, yeah, choose your own adventure there. Last chance. I'm seeing some, some, you know what I meant, you know, some, uh, there's some blue blood clubs here. There's some places that aren't so blue like Keller. I think that's like the game in Minnesota. There's Miami Valley Country Club. Solid, which I don't think I ever even heard of that. We went to school right down the road from that. Who won that one like Sam Snead or something? Lionel Lionel. Oh, that's what I, that's what I, over down, man, yeah, I'm not stepping on my head. He shows up a lot in when I'm doing these deep dives. It's, there's not a lot of media resources available for a lot of these. So in terms of like rewatchables, it's like kind of like, you kind of just got to take our word for it. If we pick it, or you can't even trust us. I haven't been able to go back and rewatch these. It's like scraped together YouTube highlights, maybe even go back into the 90s. Like they just don't have much of anything. So that's going to make it quite a challenge and maybe make it more fun as well. I think the US open and British opens will be easier to do than this one was, but really it's a bizarre tournament, bizarre history. It is even weirder now that it's in May. I think I think it had a little bit more identity in August. I could not believe they played the 1987. It was 97 degrees in August in South Florida. They had the PGA championship there. They'd had it there previously in South Florida. They played it in February back in the early seventies, but they played it in August in 87. Did not see that national design specifically for this event, I believe. That's right. Is this, is that where you're going with your first pick? It is not. It is not. God, I'm fascinated with where Sally goes with the first pick. Oh, you know where we're going with the first pick. Going with Valhalla. We'll, we have the watch. I will see you at Valhalla. Okay. Give me the 2000 PGA championship. I simping. Okay. It's the greatest of our life of our lifetimes. It's like, I can't quibble with it. The most rewatchable, a bad attire cotton shirts in hot humid as Kentucky in August. So many memorable moments of this one. Tiger running after the putt in the playoff, Bob May shooting 66, 66, 66 in the final three rounds to not win TC's. That's going to make it more valuable in your account. Tiger's got to make the seven footer to get into the playoffs. And my mom could make that putt, Bob May's putt that Ken Venturi gave up on on the way to the hole on 18. The guy, the guy allegedly kicking the ball down the hill. The sense put throwing Tiger's ball back into play. Tiger play with Jack the first couple of days. That was Jack's last PGA almost hold out on Friday up for Eagle on 18 to try to make the cut. This is clear cut. Number one, best PGA championship of all time. Uh, I'm taking Valhalla. Tiger went in three majors in a year is notable. You know, on his way to the Tiger slam. Yeah. And that one, this was, and this was at least a close one compared to the first two that he won of 2000 at the old course and at Pebble Beach. He won by a combined 23 shots, I think off the top of my head. So him getting a challenger and having a B Bob May was Trapp draw alumnus, Bob May told what you forget it. Remember for a while, the trap draw, I had a great run going where the only guests were, were people who had lost major Chavich and playoffs. They followed it. Yeah. Vandavelle things of that nature. Well, Bob made journeymen, but also like stand out junior golfer learned on that trap draw episode. I think you could make an argument where this fell being Tiger's third major that year, just 2000, like this, I mean, was this peak golf with the excitement of that event? You know what I mean? Just like, was that like the high watermark of the cat just changing the game? Neil, I remember watching this with you and the franchise. Yeah. And dad be like, who is this guy? I don't know who is this guy? He's, he's going toe to toe with Tiger. This is crazy. And Bob may just, this is a perfect, perfect PGA championship character as well. You know, you go through a lot of these older, these older PGA's and they're, they're pretty identity lists. You know, there's a lot of somewhat anonymous dudes that, that come up and have their moment and it's a. And some of them win like rich bean. Yeah. You know, they belly dance on the 18th green. Yeah. Exactly. So it's, yeah, I don't know. It's a great pick. What do you, what do you want me to say? I won this one master's week. All right. Thank you for this one. All right. It's my pick. Correct. Correct. Guys, I am going lots happened the last five years, but I'm going with the 2021 PGA championship at Kiewa, Bill Mickelson, age 50 wins it. I don't think that I have spent enough time thinking about how fucking crazy this was. Uh, I love Kiew. I like watching these guys play Kiewa. I think it's an awesome major championship venue. Um, one of the, the, you know, I would say shuttle man. Yeah. Other than the media shuttle, which I have not experienced. Surprise that didn't hold it back in your, in your rankings. That's gotta hurt. But I mean, oldest major winner ever. I think he was ranked like outside the top hundred at the time, uh, like 200 to one to win the tournament. I mean, yeah, I just think back to like the little stuff, like, two and like heavy CBD gum going on. He's wearing the aviators. He's talking about Pells, nine's, Pells, eight's, you know, just with his brothers, the caddy, he just kind of like pulled off some mental warfare with Brooks and that final round. It felt like he was just being very mindful, slowing the pace down. It was like right before Phil turned into a villain and it was like, oh my God, this guy's a savant. And, and then the scene, it was right after COVID, the scene on 18. Brooks is completely lost in the crowd. I thought he was going to like blow his knee out. He was like all upset afterwards. We got the early in the week, we got the Bryson walking behind Brooks. Uh, and Brooks just like, oh God, this fucking guy, you know, while he's like live with Todd Lewis, there was just, uh, this was a fantastic, fantastic. Major championship week in general, and then fulfilled a win it as the oldest major winner and then just go on to like turn into the Joker. Uh, is it, it's just something that we need to double click on a little bit more. So I'm taking that with my second pick. Also, just, I mean, how unlikely, not only based on his form and his place in the game and all of that, how unlikely it was, but how unlikely for him to win it, that golf course too. Yeah. I mean, it was set up. It was like, I think the longest venue in major history at the time. I don't know if that's been changed since, but, and it's just, you know, you drive it wild. You have no chance like that type of car. Of course it's so hard. 50 year old Phil Mickelson. It is the last man standing. It's, it's, it's un, I'm totally with you. And then I'm like, I need to carve out time. I need to put this on my calendar. Like guys, I need to block out two weeks. I just need to dive into how this happened. Cause I don't think I've ever really processed it. How many top 10s on the PGA tour for Phil in 2021? Zero outside of this event. There's only top 10. And this was like a year after. It happened. Remember he, he went to the Ozarks and just dominated the champion. Yes. Yeah. He was the champion's tour that year. That's right. And everyone is just mentally like, oh, just we're moved on. That part's over, but I'm glad he's glad he's cruising and happy over there on the champion's tour that he, yeah, comes back and does tour events and, and out of absolutely nowhere. Yeah. Corey Connors was first round leader. Phil finished T20 in February of 2021 at the Kola guard classic, but prior to this and then went and won the PGA. He wasn't, he won a major championship. It didn't sniff making that year's Ryder Cup team was so high-ranked. It must be here was so sick. It's so sick. And, and I just have these memories, like these almost like a slideshow memories of, of these scenes of Phil's, just like with his eyes closed behind the ball, like it was, it was like Nama stay shit where you're like, God, he's just like mentally willing himself into hitting these shots. It was, it was incredible. And oh my God, it was awesome. So yeah, lots happened since then, but that was, we don't talk about it enough. Totally agree. TC, I, no idea what's coming. I don't either. I'm between two right now. And I am going to go with the 1974 PGA championship at Tanglewood in I don't even know where it's in. Carolina. Yeah. It's like in the, it's, it's in Forsythe County, North Carolina, so I'm a Winston Salem. It's like a true muni. And I remember golfers journal did a piece on this forever ago and just like the pictures of this. It's so jarring. All the, like all the caddies are wearing these yellow jumpsuits. Trevino wins by one stroke over Jack Nicholas. It's, it just feels like, like Ray Floyd is first round leader. You got Sam Snead, who's 62 years old at the time. Finish is tied for third for his third consecutive top 10 finish in the event. This championship coincided with the resignation of President Nixon, who left office on the Friday of the event. Just a lot of like a very specific place in time for our country and for, for golf specifically, that Ray Floyd, Hubert Green, Tom Watson, Jim Colbert, all them kind of involved here. Dave Hill, Gary Player finishes solo seventh out Guy Berger. It's like the pictures really set this one off for me when I, when I looked at everything, I'm like, man, that's, it truly felt like almost like Mike Davis, maybe before Mike Davis was even Mike Davis, as far as we're going to play this thing on a true Muny. I don't know. I don't like, I've never heard anything about that course ever since. Never laid eyes on it. It's, it's, yeah, I'm just fascinated by it. I think this was, was this the one where Trevino had the quote, you know, I'm not going to be intimidated by any course, especially one owned by the taxpayers, which is just all time stuff. Well, going to Jack, I mean, was 75. He was kind of he can, I feel like didn't he win the masters? So that was an historic. Yeah. I was seven years. It's a quarter that he found in his friend's attic only a couple of days before he's staying at like this rental property with some people. It's yeah, he had, he had won three putt the whole week, the 71st hole. And the course kind of stood up to, it was a minus four, like Trevino one by one over Jack. Um, there were only three guys under par for the week or our kind of major championship. That's right. Episode seven 68 of the no laying up podcast has a lot of details from Lee Trevino talking about this and now he's choking. He like putted at he three putted the 71st hole and then just like put it out of turn on 18 because he was so nervous. He's like, yeah, I'm going to go ahead and finish this. Like, let me go ahead and then I'll clean that up. End up winning by one. Oh, good stuff. Uh, man, I mean, maybe a reach there to see. I think that one was going to come back. Yeah. Like, I kind of just fucked up my whole board because I just assumed I was planning on, on, you know, obviously this one being gone, but like, I was almost going to concede. Well, I was going to concede and just make like a political statement and just, just really like lean into what the PGA needs to be. Just go really, really, uh, academic with it. But gosh, now that 1991 is on the board, like, how do I not take that? I think I over. Player, player wouldn't talk to Trevino. He was like, serious and Trevino and he were greener just chatting away the whole time. Yeah. I'm going to go ahead and take 1991 crooked stick. Obviously, right? I mean, John Daly ninth alternate. Everybody knows the story. Found out when he was in Memphis, uh, the night before, I think he found out at like five o'clock on Wednesday that he was getting in and ended up having to drive straight to, uh, straight to Indiana to get to crooked stick. Didn't even play a practice round. No idea what he's doing. Nick Price was one of the guys that dropped out. Uh, so he ended up hiring his caddy, Jeff Medlin to loop for him. And the guy, I mean, yeah, in a sentence, ninth alternate comes in out of nowhere with no practice round and wins the PGA championship. So whooping up the crowd, the guy with the long blonde mullet hitting it. 2000 yards off the tee. I mean, it's just a true movie stuff, right? Uh, was that there? What'd you say? He was boozing down the stretch to kind of like calm his nerves. I thought. No, that was, uh, I don't think he was in that one. I think he started to go south in 94. Yeah. More PGA or season deep. That was sober by 94 in theory. And I was still getting in fights with people. Yeah. And I was going great. Yeah. Uh, nevertheless, we're back in 1991, everything is, uh, things were great. We're on the way up. Pretty, pretty fairy tale stuff. I mean, just, I don't know, probably like the biggest, uh, how is this? Not a movie moment in golf history. One of them, you know, it's just a, a, like Phil's unlikely of a winner, but Phil's also Phil, you know, this is like, uh, just even, even crazier in a lot of ways. So first year on CBS sports in 25 years, they've been on ABC. There you go. Good ratings boost. Yeah. 76, I think macro question. Do you think PGA, I know we've had some random open championship winners, but more Cinderella stories for PGA than any other major like, like this a rich beam, you know, is that what would you Sean McKeel, Sean McKeel, exact Jason or even Keegan winning his first one. Yeah. Is that just because the field's so big? I think there's something there with the masters of even when like setting maybe Danny will it aside, even when a Cinderella wins the masters, he comes back every year for the rest of his career and he feels like less of a Cinderella because he becomes so much more familiar, uh, in your consciousness. Yeah. I also think he's there, but maybe it's just because we just came off of the masters, but there's also just so much course history and course knowledge that goes into that particular golf course that it feels like it's veterans that have been around for a long time that ended up winning there. Whereas the PGA different course every year, it's not necessarily the, the toughest test in golf, like the US open, which I think weeds a lot of people out. So it's kind of just like, it's like, what is it? It's still in the field, random courses. Yeah. I mean, I think this kind of speaks to the whole, the whole problem with it. It'd just be really hot in Florida. Yeah. Go to Oklahoma. A lot of variables. Yeah. So I'll take 1991. Eija, I think that's a great pick. Thanks. I love that pick. I was going to take, it was, I was between that one. Son, you just wasn't weird enough for me. Just didn't have the chance. I didn't have the opportunity to take that one. No, I think I, I appreciate it. Uh, I think with my second one, I am going to, I think this one's kind of a no brainer too. I'm going to take, go all the way back. I'm going to take 1927. Wow. This is Walter Hagen winning his fourth consecutive title guy. Just, I mean, he just wrecked everybody. I was going to do a two way kind of 1923 and 1927, because in 1923 he lost in the finals to Eugenio, uh, Saracini, uh, also known as Jean Saracen. And after that, he just didn't lose for four straight PGA championships. And again, consider that these are match play and not only are they match play, they are a 36 hole qualifier on Monday for seating and then a 36 hole match on Tuesday and then a 36 hole match on Wednesday and then a 36 hole match on Thursday and Friday and Saturday. Uh, and you just ended up playing so much golf and Walter Hagen over that next stretch went, I think 30 and one, would that be? I mean, it was just like just jarring, jarring stuff. And I also like 1927 because it's the last year that he got away with his want to make her trophy scheme. Are you guys, are you guys familiar with this? No. Uh, so after he won, I believe it was in 1925, he went out to party. He put the want to make her trophy in a cab and he told, yes, told the cab driver, like just take this to my hotel and just leave it there. The cab driver, obviously didn't do that. Just kept it. So when he came back the next year and he was supposed to turn the trophy in, they basically were like, you know, where, where's the want to make her trophies? Like, Oh, I didn't bring it because like I'm going to win anyways. It doesn't matter. And then he did. And then the next year he showed up and he was like, yeah, I didn't bring it again because I'm going to win anyways. And he did. Uh, and then it was finally not until like 1928 that he was like, uh, yeah, I got to tell you, I lost it like three years ago. Sorry. They had to make a new one, a replica. But yeah, just, I mean, just a really, really. Unfucking believable streak, especially in match play to just go four straight years and not get beaten is big, big. It feels like, uh, Walter Hagen was the original pro for sure. Just the pre, you know, like bag or vans, that movie definitely helps them in this or helps it is my perception of them of just like kind of a, uh, uh, a true professional, well, a professional entertainer, right? I think he would do enough stuff like the showing up in tuxedos and looking like he'd been out all night and sometimes he had, and sometimes it was for show. And there was just a lot of stuff that was like, if people are believing my myth, they're going to want to watch me play golf a lot more. Uh, and then I mean, there's just a million stories that don't necessarily tie to 1927, but like him giving his winners checked to the caddy cause he was making, he was the highest paid person, like outside of Hollywood, basically, uh, at this time, it was just like, there's so many awesome Walter Hagen stories. And so I got to take him winning his, his record fourth straight PGA. He beat Joe Tarnessa. There's like hundreds of Tarnessa brothers who Jim Tarnessa later, later loses, uh, to Sam Snead and 42. And then Jim Tarnessa ends up winning in 52, a big spring country club in Louisville. But yeah, and also this one's at Cedar Crest. Exactly. And Dallas, Dallas, which is, you know, Tilling has designed that you can still go play and it's in October, which is sensical, right? It's like back when we were doing things right in the world. They'd say exactly. So I'm going to, and I also think, you know, there's an intention, but, uh, I mean, John Dalian, Walter Hagen, I think just they go together well. I feel like I kind of lucked into a nice little duo there for any of the judges that want to see it that way. So I feel great, great, great about where I'm at here after round one and one and a fourth guys, any, any idea where we're going next? No, do you, you don't have any at all. I do. This one's been, again, we're not, we're not drafting best available. We're drafting for need here. Physician need. We're going to Kettering, Ohio. Dayton, Neil, I think, I think mom was in attendance for this. I think, I think mom was 15 years old, went over with Jean Kunk, drove over from Springfield to NCR country club to watch one Raymond Floyd take down Gary player in 1969. You've got, uh, during, during the tournament's third round, there were demonstrators, civil rights demonstrators that tried to disarm the right, they're throwing ice in players face. They were yelling while, you know, Jack was playing security was stepped up there into Sunday. This was also the first players, or a PGA after the, the great schism. Uh, like professional golfers. So it breaks off from, from the PGA of America. So, um, this was 26 year old Ray Floyd, young buck. Yeah. Yeah. And like, I would have loved to have seen just a moment in time, would have loved to have seen a 26 year old Ray Floyd, steely as fuck, just staring down the charlatan, Gary player, that little ass, that little ass man, Gary player, Ray Floyd, just, just mean mugging him the whole time. Uh, it would have been epic. Um, you would not have been thrown ice at Gary player though. I can't have you. I would not have been thrown ice at anybody. I can't have you folded into that. Okay. Ali, this also marked the permanent move of the PGA to August. Um, what was, what was the demonstration? Was it about apartheid? Was that what it was about civil rights? So I think here, this is per the AP 11 civil rights demonstrators were arrested Saturday after attempts to disrupt the third round of the PGA golf championship. The main incident occurred at the 10th hole after Gary player of South Africa and Jack Nicholas, both in contention had, had hit the green. A shaggy haired white youth appeared on the green and walked toward player. He was taken into custody by security police. Six other men broke through the restraining rubs. There was a brief scuffle. Paul Price, chief of the security force, said he had been told that, that player was knocked down in the melee. Player later denied it. Civil rights group known as the Dayton organization and headed by Mel Jackson, threatened to disrupt the tournament unless a list of 27 demands were met. It's too many. These demands included 3000 free tickets to the tournament, free access of all citizens to private clubs and end of the Vietnam war and monies for the poor equal to that paid out for this tournament. God, I feel like there was one real big one slipped in there amongst the free tickets to the golf tournament. The PGA event carries a total prize list of $175,000 for 35 K going to the winner. The demonstrators held off through the first two days, making only token appearances at the gates, then swarmed onto the course on Saturday. When the event was televised nationally by ABC. The first incident came with the third hole when player, paired with Jack Nicholas, started to hit his ball off the tee. A heavy program book was tossed onto the green. A man was apprehended by security, but later released when he could not be definitively identified as the offender on the ninth hole. One of the one of the demonstrators yelled just as Nicholas prepared to putt and another tossed a cup of water at player who proceeded to three putt for a double bogey. Two players proceeded to the 10th hole where the major outbreak occurred. And then player was stomping or stopping over to line up a 15 foot putt. When a white man strode to the center of the green, then six black men broke through the ropes. There was a brief scuffle and player fell to the ground. The seven men were arrested. Player proceeded to sink the putt for a birdie, putting him in thick contention for the tournament lead held by Ray Floyd, Nicholas, Sink, an eight foot birdie putt right behind him and it just keeps going on and on and on. The offenders are scampering into the crowd and all that sort of thing. I was wondering what, what positional need does this feel for you, TC? Just chaos. Like just madness, chaos, but you know, characters, Ray Floyd, Gary, player. Notice how no one's wrestling with Ray Floyd. Even the protesters, nobody mess with Ray Floyd ever. Yeah. Yeah. Let's go after player, not him. You had, you know, you had, um, Miller, Barber, finished T five, Charles Cootie, Orville Moody, all the hitters out there. So Floyd, Floyd shot 74 to, to win by one. So it was, it was the all time attendance record. It was 106,000 for, for all days, 80,000 for just the four, the four rounds of tournament days. So it was lit. There weren't any tickets to give away. Like that's the problem about that. I mean, what would be at her if she was there, her perspective on the proceedings? National. All right. That was interesting. Great, great selection, TC. Good one. All right. I, I've got, I love that. I'm surprised this one fell to me. I'm going 1995 gentlemen, Steve Elkington wins in a playoff over Colin Montgomery at Riviera country club. So I was hoping this was going to fall to me. Neil. Awesome course. Just two character, just what two of the great characters of our time, you know, or before our time, but I mean, elk, like the best storyteller in golf, Monty, this is probably, I mean, I know a few us opens, but this was a tough one for him because he didn't really lose this one. He just got straight up beat. So Elk started, started six shots back, balls out. He's got a great, I was watching a clip this morning of him recounting this round. He's like, I'm just hitting these beautiful fades, you know, just phase. I was worried about two tee shots, the one on, on five and the one on 13 where you had to hit a draw. He does it. He points out the second shot in the 13 is the best golf shot he's ever hit. Like if I have to go to one shot where my body's doing exactly just exactly what I want, just elk go, go, it's on like secret tour YouTube channel. Secret go, secret golf. Yeah. His God, that was great. It was like the original content. He was like the original golf content creator. Yeah. He's just walking around and there's nothing better than when elk gets on a roll telling the story. So he hits his awesome shot in the 13 pin high and I think he shot 64. So he's got the lead in the clubhouse. Monty one putts the last three holes. He makes a bomb on 18 to get into a playoff. So Monty charges, gets in this playoff. Elk tells the story how he, he's like, I didn't want to take a cart back to the tee and stand back there with Monty. So I walked, he just walked back down 18 for the playoff made Monty wait on him. And then he teased off first, hits the fairway, hits the green, makes like a 30 foot bomb for birdie. And Monty played the whole well. He just got beat. Based on my memory of that, the, the, the video highlight of that, when he's walking back, Kevin Cherry like freaks out. He's like, look at this. Look at this. He's walking back. I love this move. Yeah. He's just strolling down the center of the fairway back to the tee for the playoff. And Monty's in a cart. You know, Monty's got no hat on. He's all like sweaty and red in the face. Just like a Pillsbury dough boy. It's just such a good juxtaposition. You know, Elk's got the visor on it. It's, it's a swaggy, he's got a swaggy look going and just to win his, his only major at a big boy ballpark. This is one I might have to dedicate a little bit more time to watching the old, old highlights of this one. It's one, I didn't watch this one, but it feels like God, this is everything I'm asking for here. Ball striking, ball striking, awesome course playoff. You got Monty. You don't, and then you look back at, damn man, that was probably the one, even though you've got beat, you didn't lose this one. Like that was a primo chance for Monty to get a major. So that's good stuff there. That's great. I think, I mean, you know, obligatory shout out of, of Elk talking about Monty going to Houston Baptist. Of course. All the, all the great, there's just so many good ancillary, you know, moments to this one too. If you have it, you, it worth a re-listen to the Monty NLU pod when he came over the killhouse and just showered us in stories. Who knows if they're true or not. I mean, just all time stuff. Even if they're just a little bit true, they are incredible stories. Not a man alive can eat that much custard and clip me on a back nine. So what happened? Oh, I rolled him four and five. Five and five. Oh, give me an idea. God, are we going to paint solid just getting all four Tiger ones? No, I don't know. I bet he goes 99 here for sure. Tiger PGA's are not as, uh, you know, as amazing as the, as the master's ones. God, I'd really, there's like, I think there's like, I'm like tied for, there's 10 that I could do here that are all kind of equal. And I was, yeah, there's like a bunch kind of in the same ish category. Of like, they're not, they're not spectacular at this point. And I'm worried about being, having too much recency bias with some of them, but there's definitely some recency bias. That's going to be a little bit of my strategy. I think it's, we're going off. I like to do stuff from my, my lifetime that I, that I remember and have some memories of collection. I was the cook his flavors. I get that. That's the collection I want. Like your gastronomy. Yeah, exactly. Liquid nitrogen out. The 2022. BGA at Southern Hills was remarkable. It had everything. It had 70 second hole leader last group on the golf course. You make a par and you are a major champion forever. That guy's retired from golf now. Mito Pereira got electrocuted and went in the water. Madeleine Bowie didn't make the playoff, which Justin Thomas, whose win probability got below 1% in the first half of the year. It's Justin Thomas whose win probability got below 1%. I think at one point on that Sunday, him in a playoff with Will Zalatoris, a three hole playoff that was epic. JT hits an incredible three wood drives the green on 17. Let's loosen outrageous. Twirl with that one goes on to win that one in a playoff. That PGA got moved. It was supposed to be at Bedminster and it got moved to Southern Hills because of January 6th, just like 15 months, 16 months prior. That's a tough one for TC to not have. It is. It's going to have to settle for a show Creek instead. Which one is spoiler stage? Come on. So I yeah, recent, you know, in 100 years, are we going to look back at this as maybe one of the best ones ever? I don't know. But like, I remember the drama of that one and the excitement of that one. And that was the PGA has had a good run in recent years of some pretty, pretty, pretty good drama at the end, even if the venues haven't been the best in Southern Hills was one of the best venues we've seen for this championship in recent years. So we were also on the call for that one, solid. We were. Did we call that one? No, no, we use that. We use that as a dress rehearsal. OK, so we like called fake golf. So we weren't total jimokes. I remember I just sometimes I get a little worn out with like the restoration video, like course preview stuff. But just remember like seeing what Gil did to Southern Hills and the way he restored it or renovated it was I remember like, damn, this looks sick. Like this is the golf course was the star for me that week as well. Yeah. Yeah, the green's a little slower because they're, you know, more heavily contoured and had some challenging pen positions that week. And that was that was a great. That was a great tournament. I have a lot of memories of watching that one. And so. Oh, gosh, where do we go with this next one? I'm not going to get another pick for a while. What is still going to be here? All right, I'm going to take this one. I'm going to take 2010 at Wisting Straits. Interesting. This is Martin Kimer ultimately won this in a playoff with bubble Watson. This is, of course, the infamous Dustin Johnson incident grounding the club in what was later ruled to be a bunker, which everybody felt really bad for. But also was very clear, clearly outlined prior that this was a bunker. Just absolute chaos. Nick Watney shoots like 80 in the final round in the final group had a chance to win that one. We had, you know, people don't really remember Kimer winning that as much as they do like Bubba busting onto the scene in this one. And the infamous Dustin Johnson incident didn't worry. Rory finished like T3 or something at that one. Rory missed a putt on 18 that would have put him in the playoff. Like a putt 10 feet ish. If I remember right, that would have put him in the playoff. This one just this one had a lot. A lot was going on at whistling straights between 2004 and really in 2015. And this one was the, one of the most dramatic, uh, PGA's that we'll have in our lifetime. Ah, poor Dustin man coming off pebble beach that same year too. I mean, it's just, just brutal. Triple bogey on the final hole and a bogey would have put him in a playoff. I don't know. He had a putt that he thought was to win the championship. Uh, missed it. Thought he's going to the playoff. Turns out he ground the club in the bunker and then just that image of the rules official with his hand on his shoulder. I'm like, yeah, you're not in, dude. And then I remember going back in 2015, uh, Jason day for Jason day, and they had put a grandstand up over that bunker so that nobody could go and take pictures. I remember I had to like work my way through the netting to like go underneath there and took a photo of the bunker underneath. But yeah, that's, we get to that point. It's like, all right, maybe that wouldn't have bunkered. Yeah. So it might not have been super integral to the design. They should have just played everything. I think by 2015, they play everything as waste. Yeah. I feel like, okay. Yeah. That probably was the way to go on that one. So I think you reached on that one. I'm going to say it. Yeah. I think there's a lot of other good stuff out there. He probably already won though. It doesn't matter. No way, man. I mean, that was, and this, okay, talking about cooking your flavors. This is in that, this is a blackout period for me because all these were going on during football camp from 2008, 2009, 2000, like I'm like, oh, Podrick Harrington won. I didn't see, I have zero. I've never seen a shot from any Podrick Harrington back to back. We're not back to back, but he had that run in 2008. I'm just like, oh, fuck, man. I don't even know what were Oakland Hills. Like, you know, and then 2009, I didn't really see the Y. Yang stuff. 2010, total blind spot for me. So congratulations on that one. 2011, I did see that one because we were, we went, big Randy came down to Atlanta. We went to that one. It was so hot that the seats melted and like the paint melted on the seats. And I remember sitting up and there's green paint all over my ass. Oh my God. Who was Randy was, we were sitting in the grandstand behind like Steven Gallagher. Steven. Yeah, it's range is dog and Steven Gallagher. Just like total drive by and it's like wife sitting right in front of us. Like, who is this? Who is this club pro? This lady's like looking back at us, giving Randy this stink eye. I know that that's his wife. That was cool. All right, I'm going, I'm taking 2014, baby. Give me a Rory at Valhalla. Just some, you know, electric clothing. You got a lot of big names in this one. You got Phil. Yeah, playing, playing through Phil on 18. We have light issues. Are we going to get it in weather? Just Valhalla delivers water features, all of it. I think this was, you know, God, I, you think about it all the time for those 10 years of Rory didn't win one. You're like, go back and watch this film, dude. You were the dude. Just go do that. What are you doing? One of the biggest power moves of all time. Joining the final group there. Yeah, guys, I'm going to, I'm going to play up here. Okay. I just, you guys about wrapped up here. Yeah. See, I was worried about Valhalla concentration here, Neil, for me and that, that day just kind of stunk was where I netted out of like the, the rain delay and they went way past the coverage window and they had to like rush to finish it. And I mean, it was really great leaderboard with some excitement, but just the way that PJ bungled that one, I was like, I don't know if I can have this. Well, I remember the ending being a ton of excitement because of it ended up working out where it was like stop and go, but the, and then the golf with Phil and, and Ricky was really good. Like that was a good group. Those two were like friendly and it was almost, they were like having a good time and they were playing great golf. And then, you know, Rory's like the big bad boy behind them, you know, it just comes in and, you know, snatches victory from them. So I have a good memories of that one. And I'm going with 2014. Good stuff. Let's see here. Through my big board, we got, I'm starting to see a path to victory. TC defending out what you do here. We got Henry Picard going extra hold. Jug McSpadden getting out last talked about. We got all the, you know, we got Trevino winning at Shull Creek, which I thought was pretty poignant. We've got the night, you know, the 1990 Shull Creek admits, you know what? These are my people. Best fans in golf. You 2018 Bellary. We're doing it to him. Brooks gets it done. Shoots. What do you shoot? 66. 66 on the weekend to win. You got the cat involved. I like, listen, I'm told, I'm told by these people that, that as long as the leaderboard is really good, it means it's a great golf course. So it must, it must be, it's a great venue. You got Tiger involved, Adam Scott, Stu, Sink, John, Rom, JT was in the mix for a little bit, Gary Woodland. Uh, I just remember it being really hot. The crowds were massive going into the day. I think Brooks had a four shot lead over Adam Scott, Justin Thomas, Gary Woodland. And, uh, you know, at the halfway point, things are, Brooks is still in control. Has a three shot lead. You know, it had gotten down to one, uh, through five holes. And then he kind of, you know, you just started making birdies. He birdied five of his last 12 holes and took control, but it was, he was just, he was hitting good shots. I remember him. This was like peak Brooks, right? It was this the second consecutive one he'd won Beth page year before. He went to Beth page the year after and he was a little, he won the US open the year before. Yeah. Not shaky. He's not the right word, but it wasn't as dominant at a Beth page down the stretch. It was like, uh, he had to, he kind of hung on to that one. I feel like I remember that. It went back to back. US opens 17, 18. Yeah. Yeah. So this was, I don't know. This just, this felt like very much a true PGA championship in the sense of great leaderboard. They're setting it up for, you know, it's not, it's not too, too difficult. They're setting up for scoring minus 16 wins. Um, it's hot as shit. But massive crowds in a, in a kind of an underserved Midwestern golf market. That seems like kind of the recipe that, that the PGA of America had for success there from kind of these glory days of the late nineties into glory slash shot man. They had 20 times. Those last 20, 10s. Last chance. Um, yeah. Listen, I'm trying to endear myself to the people of St. Louis because we have to go there later this year for the BW championship. I, it was the third hole, I think, uh, part three, if I remember right, this when Tiger stuffed it into that pin, one of the loudest, like gallery sounds, uh, I can recall of a Sunday, like a tiger chart. Like that was just such a real tiger charge on that day. I think he bogeyed what? What, what holdy bogey? He bogeyed six and he bogeyed 14. Okay. And he didn't birdie, was 17 a par five. Like he had a chance in this one. And he shot 64 with, with a bogey on the back nine and a par on a par five. And I feel like I remember Brooks hitting just like a five, four or five iron into one of the par threes on the back that was just like a, you know, uh, lights out lights out and special, like just deep cavernous. And he hits like 10 feet from like, you know, 240 or whatever, you know, whatever it was, it's hot balls, balls jumping out there. I, TCA, I think you're so right on that feels like the day they've been chasing at the PGA for, for a long time with a lot of these other setups. You know, it's like, that's, that's what they're hoping to get at quail hollow. So they're hoping they kind of sort of got whiffs of it at Valhalla with, you know, Xander and Bryson, and that was a great, great finish as well. But like there's, that was it. That was when all of the things, like even in a, in a quote unquote bad, uh, situation, uh, as far as golf course and all of that, like, when it all clicks and like none of that really matters. And I think that's the prototype for how that can work. Yeah. So I'm playing a little bit to the simps here of late career tigers involved. Uh, you know, give me some points on that note, but yeah, like even like Southern Hills felt like kind of a shootout down the stretch, but the winning score was only 500, you know, that was more of a hang on for dear life. And the course was a little bit slower as well. Yeah. It's good stuff. I think it's golf pro golf's, uh, club championship, you know, we need to get the horse race involved, get, get all the members out there and carts chasing down the final group, the each. That's right. Asians. Yeah. It's not about the course. TC it's, it's about the hang. Okay. All right. My pick on the snake here. Last two. Last two for you. God, I love, I love where I'm at. Uh, all right. Well, TC, I will do one cater to the simps as well. Uh, I will take 99 at Medina. Um, had to do it to him, had to do it to him. You know, that's a, uh, you got Sergio, Tigers 23, Sergio's 19, Epic dual. Tiger finally closes them out. We all know the shot, you know, from, from behind the tree that Sergio hits. Uh, Tigers just fully arrived, you know, this is, this is the, uh, paying off all of the promise and just foreshadowing everything that's about to come, uh, the, the following year, uh, just great stuff. You know, I don't know if we need to say too much more about, about 1999. Yeah. I think that's where are you at on that? See, he just did the same thing. Uh, he didn't take tiger. The tiger didn't win that one. He directly took tiger. He was trying to, he was trying to draft off a tiger in 2018. And then with my last pick, I'm going to go off the board a little bit. And this was one that I did not know a lot about until I started reading about it, but I'm going to take 1,977. Yeah. Fuck. Did you, was this on your, on your short list? Pebble beach at Pebble beach, Lanny walkings. Good in these. He beats Jean Littler, uh, in a sudden death playoff. Couple, couple notable facts about this one. First of all, it's the first major ever decided by a sudden death playoff. Uh, and it had always been 18 whole playoffs, 36 whole playoffs, come back the next day type of stuff. This, this PGA in particular was the first ever sudden death playoff, which is cool stuff. Uh, only time the PGA has ever been at Pebble beach. I think maybe the only time, like the second time it was ever in, uh, California. And then also TC, I, I, it was, it was only the second major ever held at Pebble beach as well. That's right. Yeah. 72 us open, right? Yeah. Um, this was another one I did not, I was not familiar with, uh, but before the start of the championship, there were a bunch of guys whose irons were deemed nonconforming, uh, who were deemed to have nonconforming grooves. Uh, most notably those of Tom Watson, who had already won the masters and the British open that year, uh, was trying to become the first person to win three majors in the same year since Ben Hogan in 1953. Uh, so Watson had to play with like this set of like borrowed irons, uh, in the first round ended up shooting 68 in the first round and finished kind of just out of the playoff. Uh, but notably would never go on to win a PGA. So like at, at the peak of his powers, when he's playing his best golf, uh, kind of had this weird curveball hit him at a place that obviously likes would go on to win the US open there five years later, uh, which was, was very interesting. But, uh, other people without that had nonconforming grooves, Ray Floyd, Haley, when Gary player Tom wise cough, uh, I just, I dudes. Yeah. I feel like we're, you know, we've had some of the driver stuff, right? The last couple of years, but just would love a good like Wednesday equipment. Oh yeah. By the way, this person had to throw out their whole bag. Like this stuff doesn't really happen as, as, uh, dramatically anymore. But Jean Littler, I think, I think a cancer survivor, if, if, uh, memory serves was, you know, so there's some emotionality there, uh, to him coming up just short Lanny, just a fascinating character in, in the, uh, the history of golf. So I think that gives me a really nice collection here between 91. We got, we got Walter Hagen. We've got a tiger win. And we've got Lanny at pebble beach. I'd sign me up. That's better than I thought I was going to do. I'll take it. Okay. I'm going to 1951. We're going to Oakmont. Sam Snead at Oakmont. And, uh, this was the third of his PGA wins. He, I think he was like 39 at the time. Um, and it was, it was still, you know, match play, obviously. And Snead Eagles, the first hole. And then just goes on cruise control for the, it beats the shit out of this guy. Uh, beats the shit out of this guy. Walter Birkamo, seven and six. Snead, 36 one. Yeah. 36 whole match. Eagles one and makes 15 pars and two bogies the rest of the day, uh, in the morning round and then afternoon round, birdies one, birdies two, pars out, wins seven and six after he had, he had beat Jackie Burke, Jr. And the first, first in the, in the quarterfinals, Charlie Bassler, nine and eight beat him in the semis, nine and eight guys. You believe that? And it's an ass kicking. And solid, you got to think Snead, you know, this is not too, too far from West Virginia, kind of, you know, we're, we're in that part of the country. He won another one of these at Hermitage country club in Richmond. But yeah, you got, you know, you got Johnny Bola. You got Reggie Miles, Ellsworth, or Vines, all sorts of characters here. But listen, we're playing, we're playing 18 holes Friday in the first two rounds. Like we're playing 36 holes Friday, 36 holes Saturday, 36 holes Sunday, 36 holes Monday and 36 hole final on Tuesday at Oakmont. Like we're playing real fucking golf out here, boys. Just getting a note here from Cody. Uh, Walter Birkmaugh had two purple hearts, including one from the battle of the bulge. How about that? It's been better. Like we got real heat. We got real adults. How did he see? I, I, I, I, I, I, I'll tell you that. Uh, I knew there was a reason that I remembered this one and it was because, uh, this one, I think ended on July 3rd and the, the British open started on July 4th, uh, this year, which was at rural Port Rush. I remember that from our poor rush, uh, stuff. So just, there were so many of these. I had a, uh, when Jack won in, I don't think you guys are going to take this one. But if, if you are, I'm sorry. Uh, when Jack won in 63, it was like the, it was the reverse where the British open was the week before and he had to fly straight to the PGA championship in Dallas, where it was like 150 degrees, uh, and, and hold on to win his, win his first one, but just scheduling, like just a bit of a Kyle Porter Memphis there. It is. And it also just seems, maybe this is a bad projection by me, but like, it seems like the world's probably less complicated. Back then just generally like there's less stuff going on. You like, how the fuck are we scheduling these back to back weeks? What are we doing? Might not have been a lot of communication between the body's back then. But Burkamo, I mean, shout out to him for battle the bull. Shout out. He made six birdies. Snead only made two birdies in an eagle, but he just made a ton. He parred him to death. Greg Parman. And can you imagine how hot it was in early July and they're playing 36 holes a day, day after day after day at Oakmont brutal. It's crazy. So there was another one I almost had in my list, uh, TC and 42, I think Sam Snead won and he said it was the most meaningful victory because he like, uh, World War II, obviously getting ready to, to pop off. And he, uh, he had a report for duty the day after that the day after he won, uh, the PGA, uh, just no idea what was what lied ahead for him. So just a lot of, and Burkamo, I think went, went on to win another one too. After, after this crushing defeat. I think I listen, I will put my, my list of champions, Trevino, Floyd, Kepka, Slammin, Sammy is good against anybody's. They will beat the shit out of you. Great man, TC. Jocks, real jocks, dudes. We don't make them like that anymore. Oh man. All right. I got a couple of directions I could go. I could, you know, are we going to cook our flavors? I think we are. I'm going David Tom's 2001 Atlanta athletic club. He sees work and he says, he's one of the little volunteers. Uh, Saturday makes a hole in 15 on Saturday. He got shingokatiyama with the, with the, uh, straw hat going nuts when he makes the whole one doing the bold dance, feel on the flow. The ATLians are going berserk. Absolutely. It's at the Highlands course at Atlanta athletic club. Bill Mickelson's, you want to talk about a slog of a golf course for sure. But I thought this was a good one. Tom's lays up on 18. I hit in the rough off the tee, lays up, uh, hits a wedge, like what, 10, 12 feet makes a, makes a really good putt to hold off Phil. I think I remember Phil missing a shorty on 17 in the group ahead. And so he's one back and then David Tom's holds on for the win. But, you know, kind of a seminal moment in my golf, uh, life, just the hometown tournament and, you know, older brothers out there working. I don't think I, I don't think I went to this tournament, but I watched like every second I could on TV. Yeah. And David Tom's not the most exciting winner, but what a great career he had, man. I think 13 PGA tour wins. One of this place, Neil. Yeah. It's just a memorable. Made a co-op on the last hole to win, to still win by four. Yeah. A little bit, a little bit of comfort food for me here, guys. I don't know if it was on anyone else's big board, but, uh, you know, it's a bit of a chess, Revy pick, you know, you give me, give me 11 David Tom's wins. Okay. And we can win with that, Dij. Okay. Hustle play. Yes, we'll see. Yeah. You know, I watched way too much golf that week. I was, I was volunteering. I think I had like four volunteer shifts. And then, um, what were you watching? I was in the merch tent. Any, any notable memories? Like March 10. I remember following Steve flesh one morning and he jacked and waste. I think he made like a triple or a quad on, on. There was a par four or part three over water on the front three or four or five. You went absolutely ape shit. Water. Um, that's a really big walk out there too. Tiger, Tiger didn't play well. Uh, I remember following him for a couple of days, but yeah, that was like, I remember going, I think it went seven days in a row. Uh, Tc, did they make you pay for your uniform? I think they did. Yeah. I hate that. I hate that. David Duvall was fifth. No, no, sorry. Uh, that was after the third round. It was David Tom's, Phil Mickelson, Steve Lowry, Calcovecchia's T four with shingo Katayama. I watched a lot of calc Duvall finished T 10. Good pick. Thank you. That was one for that was one for the person. I want that one for me. Yeah. One for me, you know, welcome to come over and watching any time with me. I'm all right. Thanks. I'm hoping you guys keep going cause I don't, I, I'm so indecisive. Like, I love it. He's not as bad as finally the same list that I would have taken, uh, spots in my, uh, last, last go around. Like you guys didn't take any of the ones I wanted. Other David Tom's, I kind of wanted that one, but. Oh, that makes me feel better. I could come over and watch that one. Sorry. I could go, uh, you know, any Greg Norman failures would probably play pretty well here. 86 86 and 93 are sitting there. You know, I could go more a cow at Harding Park. That was a really, really good one, but two from this decade would be, no, no fans. That's good. 19 great shot. Great shot on Colin. Great shot. Uh, Gary player. Hey, you know, this thing was supposed to be at Brentwood country club out. Yeah. TCF senior list. I'm good on your recommendations. They had a Caucasian only policy. So they moved it to a Ronamink Gary player wins. It's a good guy. I'm, you know what? I'm going to go, I'm going to go a little, little off the board with this one, but this was a great and fun PGA. It entered, it bridged us into a new character in golf. He did not win it, but, uh, somebody who would become a pretty popular player over the couple of years. What I think it is. And he would later become a PGA champion just a couple of years later after this one, 2011 at Atlanta athletic club. Keegan Bradley is your winner. He was a rookie, uh, on the PGA tour that year. First major. And first major, his, his, uh, his first major he'd ever played. He made like a, he made a triple, um, on the 16th or 17th hole on Sunday and still battle back to win in a playoff against Duffner. That was just like, that was an extremely chaotic Sunday and a very memorable golf tournament and Duffner putt hit the putt on 18 and went like 18 feet past the hole or whatever that was. It was a complete disaster, but, uh, Keegan, the, that Keegan year was a special year and I remember rooting really, really hard for Jason Duffner. He was actually flagging it everywhere. Uh, they both stuffed it in there on that first playoff hole as a three hole playoff at Atlanta athletic club. And that one's ingrained in my memory. So, um, I don't, uh, you know, I don't know if the numbers necessarily will say this. I don't know if anyone over that tournament and the one that he wanted to kill, I don't know if anyone's ever flushed their irons, tiger included. If anyone's ever flushed their irons more than, than Duffner for that, like 36 hole stretch and then look so disinterested doing it. It's just so crazy. I mean, everything was just five feet. I remember when we were there that, what the, we saw, I didn't, it wasn't familiar with Duffner's game. I remember watching them like tee off on 10 and Randy and I were both like, God, I love this guy's apathy. This is good stuff. Well, it, uh, the year before I went to the 2010 us open at Pebble Beach and I ran into a college friend of ours, TC, Ben Walter. I hadn't seen him since college. Totally ran into him out of nowhere. Like what do you have to do, man? I was like, Oh, I'm, I live in Chicago and I'm working and whatever. I'm like, what are you up to? He's like, Oh, I'm actually an agent out here. I'm like, Oh, no way. That's so cool. Who do you represent? He's like, Oh, that guy right there, Jason Duffner. You just look over this like super disinterested guy with a belly hanging up. Never heard of the guy before. I was like, Oh, cool, man. Like that's cool. I'm glad you're out there doing it. And then like a year later, Duff is just like, so I'm going nuts. I'm definitely, I'm obviously following Duffner's career from that point on. I'm going absolutely apeshit as he's rallying. It was kind of out of nowhere that he was even involved in that one. And then kind of his rise came shortly after that when he ultimately, you know, went to the no kill in 2013, but I was just going to kick out of that. Like, Oh, really cool, man. A year later, the guys almost went and Walter, one of the foremost menaces of our time and intramural flag football. Absolutely. You just get spatted up. Just everything on playing for Fytaw. Um, also Luke Clinton's agent. That's right. That's right. So, so that's it. I can't believe we didn't get a Don January, Don massingale playoff. It was on my shortlist. Shame on you TC. Nicholas and Dan Sykes and you went for the simps route in 2018. You got to own that. No, no shout out to the Herbert brothers who both wanted PGA's like just a couple of years apart from each other, including one of them, the last match play champion, little, little tiny ass Jerry barber. We didn't get, can I, can I just read this one? This is not on my list, but this was probably the next one I would have picked 1961. Did you guys look into this one? Olympia fields, Jerry barber. Uh, I heard, I saw his, his height listed as five foot three and five foot five. So I'm obviously going to believe five foot three. Uh, this is how we play the last three holes of this tournament. Uh, on 16 does that Olympia fields? Uh, he hit a four wood to 20 feet made birdie on 17. He topped his drive barely hit it a hundred yards had to hit a four wood, uh, up there to like 90 yards, shorter degree wedged on to 40 feet. It like a bad wedge made that. And then on 18, he needed birdie. It was like almost dark hits a three iron, like 60 feet makes that the darkness to force a playoff. He ends up winning in a playoff. It's a little, little tiny ass Jerry barber. I love, I love, uh, love that one. Jack out, Jerry, but I wish I had 11 of those guys. Put them on the list with David Thoms, jazz, get them on my team. So our final rosters, uh, my, my team is 2000 Valhalla, Tiger Woods, 2022 Southern Hills with JT, 2020, 10 whistling straights with Martin Kimer and the Dustin Johnson category, 2011 Atlanta athletic club, Keegan Bradley. You feel good about that? So, so I was trying to get a bunch of like 15 to 25 year olds to be the judges. Like you're not going to try to stack the deck with some old, some olds with the judging process of what you came up with, came up with here. Uh, do I feel good about that collection? No, not really, but I think that's more of a sign of the PGA than it is my own draft. It's hard to feel good about any sort of. Yeah. Um, I went, I went, listen, I, I, my strategy was clear. I went with something that people are going to have some memories of like, I don't, sorry, I don't have memories in 1961. PGA, I'm sure it was great. A history respecter. Yeah. I am a history, history, respecter. I just don't ever seen it. It's not one of my favorites. It's never seen it. Don't know anything about it. So I think about 1927 all the time. Totally all the time. One of my favorite golf turn. Uh, Neil went 2021 with Phil 1995 with Steve Elkington at RIV 2014 Valhalla and Rory 2001 with David Tom's Atlanta athletic club. That's really good. I feel you really had me through the first two. I feel like your, your, your, your last two selections you lost me. Well, you just hate Valhalla. That's why I don't. Yeah. I'm fine with that. I'm, I'm, I, I feel great about my collection. Read TZ's. Yeah. 1974 with Lee Trevino in 1969 and the first round 2018 Brooks Kepka at Bellree in 1951. Uh, I don't remember. Oh, come on. I didn't get to do it. Oh, come on. It's not. No, no. You're a West Virginia and solid T.C. What with, with strapping lads. DJ went all 1900s with his 1991 John Daly 1927 Walter Hagan 1999 Tiger Woods Simp in 1977, that's good. Which was Lanny Walker. It's really good. I, I got no arguments for years, D.H. I wish we should have done, we should do match play for the judges on this one. And solid. There's a great 1969, uh, highlight package on, uh, on Miami Valley golf. There, there are archives on YouTube, the national cash register company presenting the 1969 PGA championship. I will dig that up. All right. So next we are going to, uh, bring in our, our judges opinions, which as I'm saying this, we of course have not heard this will be recorded at a later date. Uh, this is our, our, our official judgment day and our reactions to that. This episode is presented by Loc Loman whiskey is the official spirit of the open and the Scotch partner of no laying up. We have trimmed the judging pool down from five to three. We have all brand new judges. These are a surprise here to our, to my brethren that are joining me. But first up, we're going to hear from one frequent PGA championship participant. And current PGA tour player that is Max Holma. He has listened to Tiger Simp. Potential. He has listened to the podcast and here are his rankings. Just also saying for video purposes, this is a little blurry. We did our best, but the audio works totally fine. What's up guys? Max Holma here. No media affiliation. Coming into rank. Everybody want to get this out of the way first. When I hear best tournament, best PGA championship, I typically, my brain goes to, you know, the most exciting, something memorable, not necessarily the winner. I would like to point out that you guys actually mentioned to not think about just the winner in the beginning of this podcast. I feel like that might have gotten forgotten. During your rankings, so quickly TC fourth, obviously could have got the 74 Trevino PGA in the 12th round. We're like going with consensus. That was the third. It was a crazy pick. However, I will say that when you hit that, I was pretty excited for your theme to be crazy golf tournaments, memorable golf tournaments. And I thought that your next pick would have been, I know you hate Valhalla, but Valhalla, where the number one player in the world got arrested and the rest of the week was crazy. The tournament turned out to be amazing as well. You, no one picked that. I don't know how that one's going to really bother me for a while. But then after that, you picked the stinkiest, one of the stinkiest PGA's, even though the leaderboard was good at Belle Reef. And then you picked Sneadlast, who the tournament, as you mentioned, I mean, none of the matches seemed particularly close. So I didn't really understand what the theme or any of that. Wow. Third place. I'm going with DJ, DJ kind of similarly. Hagan winning four in a row is cool. That's all I kind of got from that, that Hagan won again. The Nine Amidine is very good tournament. That was a fun, exciting one. But in general, I thought that it was kind of just trying to reach for the the lesser known ones. John Daly, ninth alternate. In your explanations, I tried, but there wasn't a ton in there that got me gassed up. It was very difficult to go between first and second. I very much like Sully's list in that there was chaos involved. Bob May picks easy. The Bob May year, that's that's just too easy. But, you know, the DJ year with the Bunkers all time banger, there's just a lot of chaos in that. I will say though that with Neil picking the 14 PGA, that's one of the craziest alternates I've ever watched with, you know, them kind of letting Rory hit up. But I don't think Phil wanted them to hit up and finish in the dark. And it was one of the craziest scenes I can remember. And I think that, you know, to DJ's point about doing this in match, but I think that one was kind of the tiebreaker, especially considering David Tom's is here at Atlanta athletic club versus the Keegan Duffner year. They're both crazy, but that whole one just sits deep in my head. So I've got TC four, DJ three, solid two, Neil one. Let's go baby. We're on the board. Here we go. I don't know if I see a path to victory after that. I was feeling pretty good covered in, but that's a tough punch to the mouth there. All right. Next up, we are going to visit our old friend, Michael Wolfe, aka Wolfe, the historian of the bunch. Yeah. This was, I think TC was drafting specifically hoping that Wolfe would be pandering. He's an historical sim. TC's a historian sim. A lot of simping going on here. So here's Wolfe. Hey folks, it's your old buddy Wolfe. And by old, I'm assuming that's why I'm here because I am old. Despite my boyish good books. I'm almost 60 years old. Can you guys believe that? So here to offer some historical perspective on the picks and I gotta say, good job guys. You guys kind of outed on this one, which is nice judging it kind of hard. If I was making a list like from a historical perspective, I think like 13 or 14 of the 16 picks that you guys made would have been on my list of the top, you know, 13 or 14. So good job. Same with the top ones. So getting right to it. I've got DJ number one. I've got TC number two. I've got Meals 3. And I don't think it's a coincidence that I was the draft order in reserve in reverse. I think the snake draft really helped DJ and TC in this with being able to kind of put some thought into how they managed, you know, having back to back picks. Got to be in the first round for DJ. But really, there are no losers in this one. It's all pretty good. Yeah, no major mistakes. Neil with his seventh pick with Elk at Riviera. I like the idea that a couple of you did with, you know, picking some courses that now would probably appear on US Open rotas. But, you know, for a while, the PJ kind of had it going a little bit more with the host courses. I like that. But I think for Riviera, I probably would have picked House Sutton over a charging Jack Nicklaus in 1983 at Riv. I also didn't love Sully's last pick with Keegan, ACC, maybe a little Atlanta bias rubbing off on him from the Schuster Brothers there. I gave that pick a C, but really everything else is kind of banger here. So that's Sully finished last mostly just because of that Keegan, ACC. I think he could have done like Bobby Nichols over Jack and Arnie in 1964, right in your backyard at Columbus Country Club, or you could have gone like with Brooks. If you wanted something a little more modern, all your picks were 2000 on. You could have gone with like Brooks, Scherger, Schaeffler and Haaland at Oak Hill. Good winner, good runners up, good course, pretty exciting tournament, 2023. Or really the other one nobody didn't find its way on there that from a historical perspective I might have put on would have been White Yang over Tiger just because how shocking that was at the time. And this guy coming out of nowhere, I mean kind of peak Tiger 2009. Everything else though, I've got pretty much matched up with you, with what you guys have. DJ1, like I say, I love the kind of mix of, he's got 1920, 70, he's got 1970, he's got 1991. Good mix there, good mix of winners. TC kind of the same thing, loved the 1974 Trevino over Jack at Tangledord. I thought the Brooks at Belle Reeve was the steal of the draft, that it fell all the way to the third round. That could have easily been a first round tick. So, and then took it up Snead at Oakmont to kind of round out his roster there was enough to put him in the two-spot. Neil, no major mistakes, but just, you know, again, kind of like Salah, I think going second and then seventh, tenth and then fifteenth. That kind of hurt him a little bit. But yeah, overall, great job guys. Couple fun facts for you that I think you mentioned, you know, on Walter Heggen and the 4P that DJ had for his fifth pick, could have been the fourth pick, but one clerical correction there, which is that Walter Heggen was a bum. Let's not overdo the whole, you know, arriving to the first tee an hour late with, you know, stepping out of a Rolls Royce, you know, with a blonde on his arm and, you know, with a half drunk bottle of champagne. Walter Heggen didn't make any child support payments the whole time he was traveling. He had a kid at home and a first wife that he just abandoned and didn't support him financially. So, on Walter Heggen, also in his waning years, his last wife that took care of him, you know, while he was failing health and all that stuff, he never changed his will to leave her anything. So she got kicked out of the house as soon as he died that she thought she owned. And Walter Heggen was a bum. And let's not forget that. But the man could play golf. This was your winner, Wolfie. The only other guy to win four majors in a row was Young Tong Morris, winning four British. In this century, in the last 100 years, only the only other guys that have won even three majors in a row were Peter Thompson at the British in 1954, 55, 56. And then a little asterisk, which was Ben Hogan. He won the U.S. Open in 48, 50, and 51. The reason he didn't win in 49 is most of you probably know, he literally got hit by a bus. So Rory was some chance to make some real history next year at Augusta National and see if he can win three in a row. He'd be the only he'd be only the fourth guy this century to win even three in a row. So Walter Hagan winning four in a row. Good job. But Walter Hagan was a bum. The rest of you though, good job on this. I feel like we have to like dequeue DJ after that. You know, he's a piece of um, DJ gets up to first retweets do not equal endorsements. I'm not saying he's a good guy. A record straight on Hagan Hagan. I just need to get this out there. Hagan stinks. That's good stuff. We might have to do a recount on, on the masters as well. I just love that. Solly's got got by Keegan again. Yeah. Just keeps keeps getting like you can get the best of them. You guys are forgetting that I hated my team as soon as it was drafted. I feel I feel no tie to any of these results at all. I feel no pride in this compared to the masters, which was very easily the best, the best collection. I feel like Wolfie kind of undid Max's whole platform there. That was that was really a detonation of Max more than anything. I got you know, the 12th round. All right. Last up, we had to get a PGA champion. We need somebody that has very close ties to this championship. Of course it tends to PGA champions dinner all the time. He's calling in I think from the sky trailer. So he's a little quiet and giving his review. Things a little embarrassed that he had to do this for us, but he gave us a lot. There's a lot of insight in this one. This is a long one. Our final judge guest judge is Rich Beame 2002 PGA champion. Hello boys. Hopefully this is what you're after. Wow. Tiger birdies last four holes in 2002. Still can't win yet. I don't get an I mean, I can mention horrible mention of that. I mean, I get a of course a guy needed to hold off the greatest player of our generation. You're fine, baby. You're fine. Too funny. All right. Here we go. You're looking at this list and I was listening to you guys and you guys are you guys are funny about all this and I get PGA championship is a little bit odd. The fact that you know it's it's hard to pick up anything super memorable. Most of the stuff is going to come in as a blanket because we haven't been able to see. We don't have the history. We don't keep the same kind of TV records and all that fun stuff as the masters do. So I get it. It's a little bit. It's weird. It's strange. You know, and I'm a big proponent, thick defender of the PGA. Always have been all of will be obviously for very obvious reasons. But still, there's plenty of memorable moments. I remember there was a kid, but then they get in first member first. My first ever memory was 86 Masters. Jack Nichols winning. That's when I kind of paid attention to the makers. But my second one was 1991 when John Daly won. And so with that and the Lanny Watkins in 1999 Tiger Woods first Sergio. I played in that one that year. That shot the Sergio of it with Tyra Hela. DJ wins this one. DJ wins it. Let's go. I just like his picks. I think that that's the ones that stand out the most. I think they're the best ones there. From there, I'm kind of torn between TC and solid. Neil, you're going to finish dead last time. You get the DFL packet of all times. I haven't gone with TC on this one. And the reason is that there's a specific one. Sorry, I'm reading your guys's notes from yesterday. Let me see here. TC wins because of the 1974 Trivino one. This is personal reasons I interviewed with the Trivino not so long ago for the PGA of America. And he kind of told me about that tournament and what it was his first ever PGA win. And had a connection with the PGA of America through his good friend Bill Escher Brenner. And he was telling me about that tournament. And he said after like the first round, he's like, this golf course isn't for you because he hits ball in low and flat and likes to chase it in there. The golf course, obviously being in August, very soft. And he said the greens were about as bad as ever seen at green in your life. He said they were atrocious. So he had to adjust this game and start flying the golf ball into the hole, which is he said, I hated doing that. But I had to make some adjustments and then went out there and won in your right on the that putt on the 72nd hole. He was so scared, so nervous. He got up there, brushed it in and the Nicholas had like an AC putter if that tied in, obviously. So there you go. So TC gets a second one. Solly, you pick some solid ones here. Let me go through my list here. The one, I mean, you got it correct. The one at Ball Hall in 2000. That's one of the ones that you have to look at as all the, you know, the toughest of who Tiger Woods really was. That shows both. And everybody kind of thought that Bob Bay, you know, even when he made that putt, you know, they thought that, you know, that Tiger putt that he made on the 72nd hole was a given. That was no gimme. That was probably one of the tougher buts, tougher buts that, you know, you would have to win a major, much less get into a playoff. I mean, Bob Bay literally almost took that one away from Tiger Maccassay, took, stole it because he earned it. Here's the right to be where he was, but he nearly took it from Tiger, which, which we would have missed the one of the greatest putts of all time, him chasing it in and pointing his finger at it. You know, that's just, that's just one of the best Southern Hills. Love that putt. That was a great finish, tragic in one end, but a great finish to the other one. There's so many good ones out there. You know, I think that the one at Keele with Mickelson in 2001, just kind of going back to some of the lists here for, for Neil. You did pick a good one, Neil, but I see what I want. Sorry. I was there. It was extraordinary to see it and the fact that the way that Phil won, I remember watching him, I think it was 12th hole. He hit, I think it was second, it was a second shot, I think he hit like a nine iron from, we're seven iron from, like 135 or something silly. And to this day, it makes a vivid imprint in my mind of how a golf shot should be hit. It was, it was glorious. I think if you go back, I'll look at the video, it was the 12th hole. He sat there, you can burst with his brother, Caddy, for a long time and he got up there and hit this just stunning, stunning little shot in there to about 50 feet. I believe he went on to make the putt, but I just kind of thought, wow, we talked about Phil, always trying to gain distance and he had, he had the driver there that week because he might have had two drivers. I think he had like a 47 inch long as you can get into 45. But that shot right there was just like, man, that was really good. But listen guys, that was a lot of fun. I enjoyed doing all that, but my clear cut winner on this once again, sorry, we got, we got DJ, DJ wins. And again, I think that I should have an asterisk and if something. Cheers, buddies. Thanks. Bye. What a thrill. What a thrill. What a drive by. Geez. Not a fan. Play better, man. I don't know what to tell you. God, that was great. What does the tally look like? The tally goes, I am in the last with an average finish of third. And then TC and Neil tied at 2.66. The tiebreaker goes to Neil because he got a first place vote. And then DJ is our winner with an average ranking of 1.66 fed to first place. Wolfie. Give me a first place vote. No, TC, you got a few words. You were not. You were second. Okay. Yeah. Almost. Close as you could have been to a first place vote without getting one, but pasted solid. God, I opened up. I birdied the first. You never do that. Exactly downhill from there. Double the last. That sucks. Deets said he didn't see a path to victory, but he is indeed our champion. Shocking, shocking. Great, great. You know, I had to put my trust in the, in the older judges for a little bit of sense of history. And, you know, I felt really good about my team walking off that, that draft. And yeah, just kind of, I kind of felt like I doubled the first day with Max's just flicking me in the nuts, but I'll take the, you know, I'll take Beamer and, and Wolfie at any day. That's, that's, that's high praise coming from those two students of the game. Nonsimps. Yeah. You know, Max, probably not a fan of the, of the Jacksonville Jaguars draft either. Not going consensus, going our own way. And we'll see what happens. We will indeed. All right. That's going to do it for best PJ championships draft. Thank you guys for tuning in.
