And what's the average lifespan of a host on a morning radio show? Oof, not very long. I feel like I should have been dead decades ago. I've been close to mine. According to Wikipedia, it's an average of 48 seconds before they quit or the station flips to a different type of music or the company just totally runs out of money Yay but you know what There always real estate Yep Those are just the facts of this business So it's kind of miraculous that our own Alexis Fuller has lasted six long years here to this month, her six-year anniversary. It's crazy. Crazy is right. I remember when she stumbled in and hung over, and I thought, that's the girl. That's the one. Thanks, Brooke. A lot has happened in that time, So we thought it'd be fun to ask her to take a look back and tell us the top things she's learned during her time in this bizarre industry. Yes. Keep in mind, she never wanted to be in radio. Actually, she applied to be a social media manager. Right. He tricked her. Producer Boyd catfished her. Yeah, that's right. Essentially, yes. And then it just kind of spiraled from there. But let's just get to your list. Alexis, what have you learned about working in radio over the past six years? Okay, one of the things is that you will do ads for things you know nothing about. Oh. No. We do endorsements, and a lot of times, like, I do like their products and services. Yeah. But there's, like, a few I know nothing about. Like, right now I'm the voice of a financial investment app. You're kidding me. You know everything about finance. I have so much money to put in investments. You're basically the female Warren Buffett. Okay. You have a chance to know who that is. Okay, another thing. Okay. You can't actually get free tickets to anything. No, that was the good old days, man. No, Brianna, Taylor Swift, you're like, yeah. Oh, all the big ones, yeah. I'm sorry, anything you want to go to. That's it, that's the way you say it. Excuse me, Hootie and the Blowfish tickets at the state fair? Yeah. Those we might be able to get free parking. Another thing I've learned that's challenging for me is you need to be able to say the same thing in five different vocal tones. Oh, yeah. Like, it's Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. It's Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. It's Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. No, that's all the same. It's Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. Can you go up at the end? It's Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. That's pretty good. Closer. They're kind of screaming at us, though. That's six years of practice, ladies and gentlemen. That's what I learned. It's better than day one. Yes. We can say that. Thank you. Slightly. Another big thing is the worse your physical and mental health is, the better it is for your career. Yeah. In radio. In radio. In radio. How you said I came in hungover I got hired I'll be out at the clubs with my friends It's 2am They're like, don't you work in a few hours? And I'm like, my boss prefers me a train wreck Next day You have much better content When you're totally spiraling in your life There's a reason we don't talk about my marriage It's going fine Oh, is that why? Yeah, sure Boring I mean, that leads me to my next one If you do talk on the radio about anyone Or anything personal in your life They will find out Yeah Yeah. Yeah. They won't be happy about it. No, my hairstylist fired me after I talked about her. You were kind of brutal about her, though, so that was kind of fair. Yeah I was offering to sell socks and my grandma texted me if I needed money Yeah That was a good text It was hey Yeah You took the money right Yeah Of course And my mom said stop talking about her Okay. Yeah. Barb. Yeah, Barb, that's not going to happen. Don't mention her. No, Barb, you're our MVP. By the way, if you're just joining us, we're celebrating Alexis and her six-year anniversary of working in radio. I can't believe it's been that long. It's crazy. And we're having her share the top things that she's learned since she arrived here. So keep going, Alexis. What else have you learned? This one hit hard. It's that the photos you take when you start in radio are the photos that last your entire career. We don't have a budget for new pictures. No. Me six years ago, my hair, how I looked, my outfits, that's me from now on. Yep. And what? You don't like how you look six years ago? I hate it. Why? But it's on the Vans. It's on the socials. It's everywhere. What? You need lighting other than fluorescent? Welcome to radio. Yeah, another one, apparently I talk too fast and sometimes no one can understand me. Oh, I didn't know that. What did you say? I have listeners who are like, when you get too excited, we can't understand what you're trying to say, Alexis, you need to slow down. Well, that was a good example. I caught most of that, so that was pretty good. That's what I thought. I think that's impressive. Because I'm the youngest, I now represent an entire generation. Oh, yeah. And they're always mad at me. Gen Z is not happy with you? No. What are they mad at you for? Well, I either make us look stupid. I don't know anything. In your defense, we all make all of our generations look stupid. Okay, what else have you learned? If you complain enough on air, listeners will send the things you want. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh. Every year with Halloween candy. Yeah. If she says we don't get candy, what do we get? Candy. Yeah. I don't know why you don't complain about how we don't have iced coffee. Like, nobody has ice coffee. Like, Alexis, you need to use this as a power. Yeah. I'm going to add that to this next one, which is things Brooke has actually taught me. Oh, yeah. Brooke likes to be the mentor to you specifically. I just really like Alexis. I like to hang out with her. If only that feeling was mutual. Yeah, right. One quote from Brooke I hear a lot is, don't waste your pretty. Yeah, yeah. What are you trying to imply? I mean, just, like, move on from the men that are just wasting it. You know, like there's going to be the guys that string you along and you think you're going to make it work. You're not going to make it work. Just figure something else out. It's ironic you think Alexis isn't stringing other guys along. So you have bad taste in men. What else does she say? The older you get, you just need lipstick on camera. It's true. Brooke says that? Yeah, the more color your face needs. It's true. A lot of tips about you aging. Well, everyone ages, Jeff. There's no going backwards. That's another quote. So yeah, and that's about my top list. You learned a lot in six long long years here Very mature now Just wait till the lipstick starts being applied Uh Don think of me We all in trouble Those were your top things Alexis has learned Dude, that's awesome. In her six years of radio. Oh, yeah. Yeah, send her congratulations on the text board. Or roaster, whatever one you want to do. Absolutely. Or iced coffee, remember. Iced coffee. Send them in. But we're going to have some fun with the phone tap. It's coming up right after this. I'm Nancy Glass, host of the Burden of Guilt Season 2 podcast.
