Summary

The Elliot In The Morning show discusses the Shigella bacterial outbreak, its transmission routes, symptoms, and treatment resistance. Hosts and callers share personal experiences with the infection, emphasizing hygiene practices and CDC guidelines for prevention and recovery.

Insights
  • Shigella transmission is primarily fecal-oral, requiring ingestion of contaminated material; it spreads rapidly in close-contact environments like daycares and families
  • The current strain shows antibiotic resistance, making treatment supportive rather than curative; patients must wait out symptoms which can last 2-4 weeks
  • Severe cases can cause dangerous dehydration and complications like kidney failure, particularly in young children and immunocompromised individuals
  • Sexual transmission is possible during active infection; CDC recommends abstinence for 2 weeks after symptom resolution to prevent partner infection
  • Outbreak prevalence has increased significantly over 15 years, with waves of cases spreading through communities, farms, and international travel
Trends
Rising antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections becoming public health concern with limited treatment optionsIncreased awareness of fecal-oral transmission routes in foodservice and childcare settings driving hygiene protocol changesShigella outbreaks linked to farm visits and contaminated food sources, suggesting agricultural hygiene gapsPrimate populations (including zoo animals) identified as natural reservoirs for Shigella, expanding transmission understandingMulti-week recovery periods and sexual transmission restrictions creating broader social and economic impact beyond acute illness

There's a lot of luck. Listen to ThanksDad on the iHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast or wherever you get your podcasts. On paper, the three hosts of the Nick Dickenspole show are geniuses. We can explain how AI works, data centers, but there are certain things that we don't necessarily understand. Better version of play stupid games when stupid prizes. Yes. Which by the way wasn't Taylor Swift who said that for the first time. I actually, I thought it was. I got that wrong. But hey, no one's perfect. We're pretty close though. Listen to the Nick Dickenspole show on the iHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey there folks, Amy Robach and TJ Holmes here. And we know there is a lot of news coming at you these days from the war with Iran to the ongoing Epstein fallout, government shutdowns, high profile trials, and what the hell is that Blake Lively thing about anyway? We are on it every day, all day. Follow us Amy and TJ for news updates throughout the day. Listen to Amy and TJ on the iHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast or wherever you listen to podcasts. So somebody sent me something and go, where are we on this? Now it is another thing that I pay zero attention to. It's not as prevalent prevalent as shingles, but it's a lot. You mean a lot? Oh, it's a lot of people. Hands of people that worry about Shigella. Oh, it's back. And it's taken over. Bacteria. Yeah. As I thought. I actually, I think Dustin has Shigella. I just saw when I saw his tushy. Is that what you saw? The tuft? The, that's not tuft Diane. That is a forest. The, they think of Shigella because it sounds like shingles or are they? No, no, they were just saying that it is, well, you can't treat it. You can't treat Shigella. You just have to like ride it out to go the way. Is it Shigella? Is it Shigella a, don't they call it a superbug that you can't treat? Oh. But is that the problem right now? It's resistant to treatment. The one strain going around now. The problem is it's going around fast and hard. Isn't this, I feel like mostly diarrhea? Well, not just diarrhea. I mean, that's the first thing the CDC says. Oh yeah. No, no, like that is, that is, that's proof positive. Most common way people get sick are from eating or drinking something contaminated, be it food or water or contact with someone who is sick or has recently been sick with Shigella. Right. You know where a lot of people get it from? And it's, it's usually fecal born. Anybody who's got a kid. Just because they're little digging their asses. Petri dishes anyway. Right. So they're outside playing. They got a scratch. They don't know. They just itch their butt and then they come in and they go, here's part of my doughnut. And then you eat the doughnut. Don't touch me. I didn't even touch you that time. Too close. I didn't even touch you. I gave you Shigella. But yeah, they said kids trans not, not to each other or themselves, but to parents. Yeah. All the time. So you have to ingest the fecal matter. I, doesn't it travel fecally? I believe you're right. Yeah. Right. But it's not like, remember yesterday we were talking about feces. You can just, You're getting in pustules. This sounds like, God damn. That's what we would mentioned. This you have to eat it. ATM. Or you can't play outside later. Not you have to eat it. Oh, don't stop there. Dustin will tell you eat the hair. Is it fecal oral, Diane? I think it's fecal oral. And then I do think it is, it is like, like for, no, it's not just, you can also even a very small amount of germs can make you sick. Well, I don't think anybody is like, Hey, who's the baseball team? Shigella germs are in poop. Yeah. Exactly. Right. No, no, but it could also be from anal. Anal sex. Yeah. Yeah. Do you see sexual contact here? So you can get it from eating it, anal-ing it. Contaminated water. Yeah. Yeah. So it's avoid swallowing water while you swim. Yeah. No, there's that. By the way, everybody in the Potomac's got Shigella. But don't they say so? Yes. Diarrhea is usually the first sign. And can be very severe. But oh, yeah. Like there's, like even, they say even like a colonoscopy prep and got nothing on Shigella. It could be bloody or prolonged. That's the word I was looking for. Bloody. Not prolonged. Oh. Bloody. Yeah. And they said extreme gut pain. Extreme. Yeah, it says. And you can't treat it. And it's resistant. Mm-hmm. So even if you try to take like a, like a, like not penicillin, but like a, like a. Antibiotic. Antibiotic, yeah. It laughs at a, an antibiotic. Yeah. They said it's one of the things that travelers often have to deal with. Overseas. Yeah. More likely to become sick with the type of Shigella that is more difficult to treat. Also, they say that this is why, depending on, and listen, I don't know where you're going, but they, they do say like if you go, um, if, like if you're in a place where the salad looks iffy, don't eat it. You get Shigella. Now this increase though, it's, it's over like 10, 15 years. They're not just talking about year to date or summer to summer. They're saying, oh, and it's not slowing down and it's, it's, it is multiplying every year. So like 10 years ago, it was Adam and Eve. Now you got everybody's getting it. You got way, waves of Shigella. They said some people can't leave the house. Says a few of your partners been diagnosed, do not have sex for at least two weeks after the diarrhea ends. This is from the CDC. There's so many rules about diarrhea. Versus the swimming pools. Now it's my bedroom. Can I ask a question when you, when they say don't have sex with your, with, if your partner has it? Uh-huh. Does that mean anal sex or any sex? Says, you or your partner has been diagnosed, do not have sex for at least two weeks after the diarrhea ends. Can we just say the symptoms end? Orals okay. I'm not, I'm not throwing up diarrhea. That's not, that's not okay. Why? That definitely approaches the danger zone. So if somebody has diarrhea, you can't oral? If they have Shigella. You said wash your hands. And also, you know what? I'll say sure. Why not that either? I don't read a diagnosis to tell me, perhaps stay away. Wash your hands genitals and anus with soap and water before and after sexual activity. Activity includes anal, oral and vaginal. So it's all of them. Two of those three you don't have diarrhea coming out of. But it's the bacteria that's getting spread. I understand that. But if Jackie was, if Jackie came out of the bathroom, like, like, like she was coming out, like on Friday and was like, whoo, don't go in there. You ready for anal? You'd be like, but if she was like, don't go in there. But like, all right. Diane's instructions for washing sounded like that old pirate radio jingle. Wait, which one? Isn't it about like combing your hair? Wash your hair, wash your hair, brush your teeth, brush your teeth. Before you get dressed each morning. I don't know if we had wash your hair, wash your hair, scrub your anus, scrub your anus. Where am I going? Line three. What's up, everyone? I'm Aiko Vodem. My next guest, you know, from Step Brothers Anchorman, Saturday Night Live and the Big Money Players Network, it's Will Ferrell. My dad gave me the best advice ever. I went and had lunch with him one day and I was like, and dad, I think I want to really give this a shot. I don't know what that means, but I just know the ground links. I'm working my way up through and I know it's a place that comes up and comes up and it's a place where you can look for up and coming talent. He said, if it was based solely on talent, I wouldn't worry about you, which is really sweet. He goes, but there's so much luck involved. And he's like, just give it a shot. He goes, but if you ever reach a point where you're banging your head against the wall and it doesn't feel fun anymore, it's okay to quit. If you saw it written down, it would not be an inspiration. It would not be on a calendar of, you know, the cat just hang in there. Just hang in there. Yeah, it would not be. Right. It wouldn't be that. There's a lot of luck. Listen to Thanks Dad on the iHeartRadio app, Apple podcast, or wherever you get your podcasts. This is Amy Rovok alongside TJ Holmes from the Amy and TJ podcast. And there is so much news, information, commentary coming at you all day and from all over the place. What's fact, what's fake, and sometimes what the F. So let's cut the crap. Okay, follow the Amy and TJ podcast, a one stop news and pop culture shop to get you caught up and on with your day. And listen to Amy and TJ on the iHeartRadio app, Apple podcast or wherever you listen to podcasts. I feel like it was a little bit unbelievable until I really start making money. It's financial literacy month and the podcast eating while broke is bringing real conversations about money, growth and building your future. This month here from top streamer, Zo Spenser and venture capitalist, Lakisha Landrum Pierre, as they share their journeys from starting out to leveling up. If I'm outside with my parents and they see all these people come up to me for pictures, it's like, what? Today now, obviously, it's like 100% they believe everything. But at first it was just like, you got to go get a real job. There's an economic component to community striving. If there's not enough money and entrepreneurship happening in communities, they fail. And what I mean by fail is they don't have money to pay for food. They cannot feed their kids. They do not have homes. Communities don't work unless there's money flowing through them. Listen to eating while broke from the black effect podcast network on the iHeartRadio app, Apple podcast or wherever you get your podcast. Hi, Yeli, in the morning. Oh, Kristen, will you find, I don't know if that's what this is. Will you find me somebody either who has had Shigella has Shigella. Oh, they're on a mom's gonna say, hope you got along cord. But what is it 1970? You'll hear an echo. Unfortunately, I think I fit the bill of what you are asking for. Well, if you were calling to invite me over for anal, I'm gonna have to pass. It's fine. We're good in like two weeks, I think. Wait, so do you think you, oh, wait, I got to give the number, ma'am. 866 to Elliot. 866-235-5468. Somebody, somebody who hasn't had it had a loved one, just somebody who's who's been around Shigella. Anyway, what you got going on, ma'am? I feel like about a week ago, that's what I had. Wait, so are you are you are you over it? They said it normally. How long did it last? It lasted a couple of weeks, actually. Yeah, I think I think I read like awful diarrhea for weeks. Yeah, like, yeah, it was, I was like, I, you know, if this keeps going, then I have to see a doctor about it, kind of thing. You should have gone after a couple of days. What was your breaking point going to be? I don't know, maybe starting week three. How was, did like severe stomach and gut pain? Yeah, that was the main thing that makes me think that that's what it was. And then followed by like a a a ton of diarrhea. Unfortunately, that did go in tandem with the cramping and pain. Hey, was there and I'm not trying to be gross. Was there was was it like, did you have blood at times at times? No, thankfully, I did not. Good for you. Were you were you still going to go? Were you were you still going to work? Yes. Yep. How many? Luckily, we have bathrooms on every floor, so I would just take a different floor. Yeah. Oh, it's like here everybody. Everybody's got a different floor here, but that's OK. I know where Casey and Haley go. Hey, the and so and but there was like, there's nothing you can do for it. Yeah, I did everything. I like changed my diet. Maybe it was something I ate, that kind of thing. Definitely was something you ate. You ate, dude. You're sure? At some point. And do you have? Unfortunately, do you have any idea? Like if you go back to when it started, actually, you may not know the answer to this. Is it? Oh, I do. Oh, go ahead. I got like a sandwich from a sub place. And it happens like pretty soon after that and for a while. So I think that that might have been someone didn't wash their hands or whatever. You know what? I didn't even think of that. But yeah, that could be a case where, you know, somebody somebody goes to the bathroom, you get that peek-a-boo toilet paper when your finger peeks right through. And then like next thing you know, I'm just putting tomatoes on this thing. God. Oh, dude, you ate poo. I'm just putting tomatoes on this thing. Oh, dude, you ate poo. Hey, I'm sure you have to. Oh, I guarantee it. Hey, can I ask you this? Are you are you married or in a relationship? I am married, yes. In the last two weeks of Shigella, did you have sex? No, my friend. Excellent. No, you're not. There is. Yeah, you're not supposed to. You're not supposed to. You really don't feel like it, if we're honest. You're like, this isn't this isn't like the thing I really want to do right now. Yeah, no, I understand. I understand. All right, very good. Very good. Thank you, ma'am. Thank you. Yes, Tyler. What was her name? Did she say? I don't think she didn't reveal. Oh, she didn't say because we got a snap that says, don't you guys remember about 10 years ago talking to Shigella Jeff? The answer is no. What is Shigella Jeff? So there's Jeff the Fish Guy. Yes, thank you. And Shigella Jeff. Maybe it's the same person. I don't recall that. That was his nickname. Why would the person that wrote that be making it up? Or did that come from somebody named Jeff? No. Oh. No, they were actually responding to the video of you dancing like a munchkin. He only gave me a shirt. They spelled it J-E-F-F. OK. And Jeff the Fish Guy is his geoff, right? Yeah. Well, but is it when he deals with fish, it's geoff, but he deals with Shigella, it's J-E-F-F. Where am I going? Line one. Hi, Yalia. The morning. Good morning. Hi. Who's this? This is Beverly. Yes, Beverly. What can I do for you? Well, a while back, my grandson had that. He's now 12. I think he was about three years old when he had it. He was pooping out blood. Yeah. Hey, the the let me say this. They do say that like kids, I mean, think about it, kids transmit like crazy. And especially they're digging in their ass and all that. I get it. But they said because of just how small a kid is and they don't have a great built up system, it could be it could be really, it could be really dangerous for a kid. Yeah, I think I think they went to a farm. This is where it started. They went to a farm where there was like cow poop and stuff like that. His older sister also had that problem, but she didn't get hospitalized. But he did. And they, I think they had some kind of like poop on their shoes and maybe it got transferred. You know how kids are like. Amen. They don't wash their hands, but he was in the hospital. I'm going to say three, four days, maybe more. He almost had kidney failure. Oh, no. I mean, he was probably so dehydrated from so much diarrhea. He probably had, he probably had more diarrhea during Shigella than grandma had in her entire lifetime. Exactly. Oh my God. Hey, can I can I ask a question though? Can I ask a question? Hey, thank you ma'am. For Shigella, is it, is it, can you get it from animal feces? Oh, great question. Because like she said, like they were at a farm and it could have been like like cow poop or something. Why in my head did I think that Shigella had to come from people poop? Highly unlikely to get from common pets or farm animals. Oh, you know what though? It does say as humans and other primates are the only natural reservoirs for the bacteria. Didn't we know this, I do remember, didn't we talk about a Shigella outbreak with the apes at the Jacksonville Zoo? It sounds kind of familiar. And you said they must be flinging all day. That's right. Something like that. Or it's hard to fling water. You made some joke about apes and poops. Wait, so, so, wait, so, so how does that get me to so? Oh, so primates can share it. But it's not like if you go out to, if you're at a farm and you step in cow poop, chances are you're not going to get Shigella. A 2024 outbreak at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens resulted in the deaths of five primates, including a 35 year old gorilla and a three year old named Kevin. Hello, this is Kevin. Not anymore. Crapped himself to death. Hey, I felt like I'd been there. The staff had to wear extensive PPE. That's SeaWorld. Where am I going, line three? Hi, early in the morning. Hello? Is this me? Yeah, hi. Who's this? Hey, this is Mary from Tyson. Hey, Mary, what can I do for you? Well, I have a 10 month old baby in daycare and we have had this situation for the past few days. And I knew babies pooped a lot, but this amount of diarrhea you would not believe. I didn't even think of daycare, but with the way kids pass it around. Yeah. I bet it's as a matter of fact, if I opened the daycare center, I would just call it Shagallas. Shagallia. It hit the parents. So, you know, you text your baby friends, moms and dads and say, did it hit you too? Did it hit you? And so it just basically went through the whole class of all of us in joint media. In joint misery of poopy land. Wait, so hold on one second. Did you get it also? No, I did not. Did your other mom did? Didn't put on the extensive PPE. No, but you know what? Probably picked her kid or her kid up from daycare and you're like playing with the kid and you're kissing their hands or whatever. And while you're kissing your hands, you don't know that they're eating little Jimmy's feces. Exactly. No, they dig in your mouth. You're absolutely right. There you go. Miracle eyes stayed clear, but. Wow. Remember, if you get it, no, no sex while you're still having the diarrhea. And for two weeks after. Oh, and for two weeks after. That's the key. Two weeks after. Thank you, ma'am. Thank you. I feel like everyone else pointed to the mood. Not being right. If you're having diarrhea, but for half a month, you're not supposed to. Wow. Wow. Where am I going? Oh, I should go to Jeff. Hey guys, it's been a decade. Hi, Elliott. The morning. Is this me? Yeah. Hi. Who's this? I'm Amanda. Yes, Amanda. What can I do for you? Um, back when my sister was in college, she came home and was working at like a daycare over the summer and got to go and she was hospitalized. Yeah, no. I mean, it can really dehydrate you really. Really dehydrate you. And I felt bad for her because she's one of those like doesn't talk about poop. Any of that. And she's in the hospital. She's like, oh my gosh, I got to go. And it was the worst smelling poop ever. Like never smelled anything like that before in my life. I'll take that challenge. No, it was bad. There was. No, but no, it's true. And they will say, I actually, you know what, and I'm being, I'm being very serious. And I'm glad that you said that. They do say like, like ways to monitor your body. Like none of us are doctors, right? Thank you, ma'am. But one of the ways that you can monitor your health is for the most part, you know your range of what your bowel movements smell like, right? Like I'm not saying that Kristen talks about it a lot. I'm not saying that. Oh, don't go in there. If we all made piles and then you went by and we're like, you would. Kristen, it's not a volunteer opportunity. But if your bowel movement smells way worse than it normally, like even if you were like, oh my God, that there's something wrong. It does say it is typically very foul smelling and sometimes greasy. Well, that's not going to help me. Not the person. Or Wednesday. No, no, no. But don't you agree? Don't you agree? You know a range of what your dump smells like. How about the fact that you would have had diarrhea for multiple days? Yeah, that's, that should be the clue. Actually, it's not. I don't want you to get to week two and think, but it hasn't smelled terrible yet. Hey, Jackie, come in here. Does this smell different than usual? What do they say? How many days before you should call a doctor about? I don't pay a check. Straight diarrhea. I haven't had a solid bowel movement. The CDC keeps highlighting like three. They say that is three days is prolonged. Three days of diarrhea. Whatever, Fauci. Yeah. If I had three days of solid stools, I'd call. Hey, is this the CDC? Yeah, but. There's acute diarrhea. Oh, mine. It is so cute. And there is persistent. Acute will be two to two days to two weeks. What is persistent? Two weeks to four weeks. That's me. And chronic is actually you. Oh, sorry. Most cases of acute diarrhea go away without treatment. Severe diarrhea, which is greater than 10 times a day. Oh my God. Or where that's where if you don't flush, you're praying it doesn't come over the bowl or where fluid loss is significantly greater than your oral intake. So you're you're. You're. You're out. More out. But you're putting it right. I can tell you. I can tell you who does not have diarrhea right now. Is that Dustin? I didn't know that because his ass doesn't look like he just got out of a pool. Hi, Elliott. The morning. Hello. Hey, is this me? Yeah. Hi. Who's this? Hey, my name is Adam and now my white head is the same thing as it. Set it or seat it. The C diff. Oh, see that? No, she did. If is a transplant of poo. Oh, no, they. They. Oh, wait. So what is it? What is it where I wanted to? What is it where you get a poo transfer that can help? Wow. Oh, yeah. Okay. So she hasn't gotten that far. She's a teller at the bank and she doesn't wash her hands nearly as enough. So. So they thought she had. Think she had that, but she had to see it severe. The diarrhea. Be hydrated. Same thing. You know what I mean? Yep, I sure do. I sure do. Oh, because you know, dirty money. She's just got why you need to do it. I'm just giving Elliott the cash that was my wallet. There you go. I don't need this anymore. Just flip it up with your pen. But, uh, what you were talking about, I can definitely relate because I have what you call the sick farts, you know, that's how I know when I'm getting better at something. Oh, sick farts. Yes. I know what you're talking about. I know what you're talking about. I miss that. Sometimes what is like complimenting someone. Oh man, that is a sick fart, bro. That's why there was confusion in the room. Hey, listen, I'm going to volunteer. I'm going to volunteer because I always said when Diane thought she had C diff, if she needs a fecal transplant, remember, I don't want to like go and then they use like a baster. I want to just line up butthole to butthole and I push hard. I like the human centipede. That's exactly it. Thank you. But C diff, not usually like that fecal to oral route we talked about. No, no, no, no, no. It should be caused by like medication or like to help your shedding. No, chigella is just from ingesting poop. Man, we've been medical this week. Didn't hear from Jeff though. No, it's been 10 years. I hope he's okay. Neither one of them. You know what? It sucks to be bored. I want to take a second to talk about something that's personal to me. I've had the privilege of working closely with Robert Kraft for a long time. And one thing I've always respected is how seriously he takes up standing up to hate. As a Jewish athlete, my identity is something I am proud of. But I also know what it feels like to be singled out for it. That's why this new commercial for the Blue Square Alliance Against Hate that aired during the big game really hit home. It's about showing up for someone when they're targeted, even if you don't have the perfect words. And sometimes standing next to someone is enough. And you can show support by sharing the Blue Square. My dad gave me the best advice ever. He goes, just give it a shot. But if you ever reach a point where you're banging your head against the wall and it doesn't feel fun anymore, it's okay to quit. If you saw it written down, it would not be an inspiration.
