Summary

The CHGO Bears podcast analyzes interviews with Bears head coach Ben Johnson and GM Ryan Poles from the NFL owners meetings, focusing on offensive improvements for 2026, particularly Caleb Williams' completion percentage target of 70%, quarterback development and leadership, and draft strategy prioritizing best player available.

Insights
  • Ben Johnson's self-scouting process identified 80-100 missed completion opportunities beyond drops, indicating significant untapped offensive potential despite leading the league in explosive plays
  • Caleb Williams' leadership development and acceptance of hard coaching from Ben Johnson represents a fundamental shift from the Eberfluss era, with teammates respecting his competitive mentality
  • The Bears' offensive success is heavily dependent on center intelligence and communication, making Drew Dalman's retirement a significant loss and Garrett Bradbury's transition a critical 2026 variable
  • Ryan Poles and Ben Johnson maintain disciplined best-player-available draft philosophy despite defensive line needs, betting on coaching staff improvements rather than forced positional picks
  • Body language and quarterback demeanor are deliberate coaching emphases that directly impact team confidence and execution, particularly in high-pressure moments

There they are. Carm sweet Bippy ready to go. Calling out for the iceberg. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. 70% that is the goal. We'll try to hit that for you on this show today. 70% of a good show. We are live from the Xfinity loft. This is the CHGO Bears podcast alongside my handy Danny trusty bestie Gregory P. Allen Braggs. Today stands for got the job done. No pushups today buddy. Yeah. You leaned into your goals in life and you got it done. So congratulations. Yeah. I mean I genuinely wasn't going to go to the gym this morning. I was like I really don't feel like doing pushups on the air today and that motivated me to get my ass to the gym so I didn't have to embarrass myself on the show some more today. So that that means it's working. Yeah. And that's a fantastic. You know I had the choice of listening to After Dark Phenomenal show was with Phil and Shane and Greg and or going to the gym in Midtown and so I did that put out a put out a great video for you. Check out the car on Instagram. But then you know I got up today and I was like oh my god we got Ben Johnson and Ryan polls on Hogan Johnson. Of course I always listen to Hogan Johns but today I went like I've listened to it like three times over to get the full effect. Adam Hogan now joins us to as he got to look came down from the mountain. He come in down the mountain. Shout out to me so great band that's currently broken up. Hogan by the way joining us right now on the Xfinity mobile call in line as we upgrade everything your thanks to our friends at Xfinity and their five year price guarantee. All right Hogan we got a ton of clips here we're going to play but I want to ask you first looking into the eyes of a Ben Johnson looking into the eyes of a Ryan polls. Do you feel like you you built a greater connection with the head coach and the GM was there a moment that you're still thinking about at this very moment right now is half your faces in the sun and half your face in the shade. You look like borderline serial killer slash also brilliant man all at the same time. This is amazing. See this is the problem we had yesterday. Do you want the palm tree background or not? I do. I like this. I see you. No you know I just think that plugging away with getting to know Ben Johnson here going in the year two very nice him to sit down with us for as long as he did. We try to have mostly a quarterback conversation with him and I always appreciate you know think about Ben and I think it came through in that interview is I don't know if he necessarily loves doing media because I'm not sure anybody does but it seems like whatever Ben Johnson is doing in the moment he gives 110% to and I think that that's pretty hard to do as a human being in life but I think it's one of the you know so when he when he does take the time and he was kind of on a marathon of interviews to be honest with you by the time he sat down with us I will shout out Adam Johns he he came prepared with a cup of coffee for the head coach before the interview and I think that Ben really appreciated that got him a little bit more caffeine in the system and I you know I think that's that was a veteran move by Adam Johns. See you would have showed up with a diet Dr Pepper. This dude just that's a that's a great job by John that's that's excellent and he drank it in the interview he was sipping on that coffee. Yeah. Yeah. We did claim that we bought it for him but it was just a free coffee from the media room. Yeah. Did he go cream or do you go black? Do we know he got whatever Johns gave him. I don't know. I that's an interesting decision though like if you were going to get Ben Johnson coffee this is what everybody came here for would you put cream in the coffee would you go straight black what would you do you don't even know anything about I don't drink I've never had a cup of coffee I would put a splash of cream in for the record just a splash because you know it's in there if you want it but it's not going to overwhelm him. Sometimes if he's there but what happens if he's got a dairy thing going on here but then general jump in would have to ask this is very I'm sitting next to JJ steak of its right are we getting rained on. Yeah. I think we're getting rained on right now. Yeah. So can JJ give us a diodangba so we can hear what it's be like if he actually ever made a tackle again for the bears. See here's the thing I know JJ will do that for us there are a lot of people around right now so I feel bad putting him on the spot they're requesting a diodangbo. Yeah. It's a little awkward or it were he said he you know what he said he's not motivated right now to do it. Yeah. All right. Yeah. I should be getting any that's not fair by me. Dio get well you're a good man I'm rooting for you. I'm sure you'll have many tackles with I'm not sure but I hope you'll have many tackles with the bears coming up here. All right before we play the clips I do want to ask you is there anything that did stand out for you that you know that you're thinking about after the whole extravaganza on either side with Ryan and or with with Ben. Well I mean a couple smaller news items you know towards the end I did ask about joint practices I thought Ben made it very clear last year that he not only likes having one but two and that's going to be the goal this year as well. I know that information is relevant to you Greg and a lot of the fans I like to come to training camp practices. What's interesting this year is the bears will only have one home preseason game. So you would think that if they're going to do two joint practices one of them would have to be on the road this year. Now there is one exception to that some teams the bears have not done this yet but some teams do have a joint they'll do a joint practice the week prior to the first preseason week. So that would be when there's no game they just you know get together for one or two practices and then that's it. So theoretically the bears could still host a second joint practice that week and there just wouldn't be a preseason game that follows. So we don't know I think they're still trying to put together a lot of that's based on the preseason schedule who you're lined up with teams can make requests they can try to you know set up their own games but it doesn't always happen that way. So we'll just have to wait and see exactly. But the goal is to have two preseason at least two joint practices this year. Once again Ben felt like those were very valuable last season. I bet you're excited about that would be a request of who they practice against. Would that hope whoever it is bring it on. OK. Jeremy's want to come back and cry about how hard we are. They can. Well they're new running best coach was on that team and now he's a bear so it all comes full circle. Jeremy was asking was that an elephant in the background and I'm not spelled right as far as I'm sure Jeremy that's OK. It was actually it was actually JJ moving his chair out of the rain. OK. By the way I should clarify too JJ if people don't know does public address for the Indianapolis Colts in addition to whatever else he does for the Colts which I'm sure is lots of things. He's a very talented man who used to work in Chicago for people who don't know JJ new to the show. So that's why we're asking for a die O O Dango. All right. Let's get to some sound here. How completion percentage is the headline of the show. Ben wants to get to 70 percent. You guys asked him about it. This was Ben on raising the bar so to speak and where the bears are at and where Caleb's at earlier you said the passing game leaves something to be desired. What do you desire next from the passing game. Like and how are you measuring that progress. Well when I watch the self scout I would still say that rings true. You know it showed up. You know the easy thing and something I've been talking about all day here is the easy thing is the completion percentage. You know we're 58 to 59. I made it a statement last year that we really if we want to be elite we want to be that 70 percent marker. And so we felt short of that and you know we don't shy away from that. I think when you look at it for us to get to 65 percent completion even cut that in half we need to find 40 more completions over the course this season. Well let me tell you something when you watch the self scout there's 80 90 100 completions we left out on the table and I'm not just talking about passes dropped. I know that's the first thing that probably comes to mind but every team is going to have some some passes that are dropped on the ground by their their route runners and catchers. So that that's going to happen. But there's a number of things when you watch this tape that we're going to continue to get the timing down our footwork down our ball location down. I put a lot of stress on our coaching staff myself at the forefront of that of where we can coach this stuff better not just to get the primary receiver open more but to where our route details more defined when Caleb creates on his own. We have the proper reaction on the back and we come alive on the back end and uses an opportunity to get a big play down the field. We didn't feel like that happened nearly enough. And so I think there's more than enough opportunities on the tape. And when the guys get back in the building that's something that we're going to really stress. I really enjoy how he he kind of breaks that down you know and makes it simple in terms of hey even if we just get 40 more completions we can get halfway home. And so for me like hearing that and the way they're kind of going through their self scout right now it just feels like it's a very attainable goal even though you know at the end of last year I think he had the worst completion percentage of any quarterback in the NFL. But it does show you guys like you know essentially what we're talking about there and I agree. I mean for Ben to break it down that way he didn't need to go into the numbers the way he did you know just talking about how okay they get hit 40 more plays they get to 65. Really they felt like it was closer to 100 maybe and that comes out to a handful plays again. So if you go back and think about you know our quarterback reports we were doing every week during the season when you know I was putting all those charts on the screen that you know we're blowing your brains right everybody out there. I never understood it. But to put it more simply like essentially what I was trying to show you and Ben did it better than me there no shocker to just explain it the way he did like we're talking about a handful plays every game like that's what we week by week that's what we were doing we're like hey this was a good performance could have been great if it was or this was a great performance could have been almost perfect if we just completed this one this one and this one. That jives with what I think we were seeing with our own eyes during the season and I think like the biggest thing that we got clarification on an interview because as he was talking about that in my own head I'm going to wait a minute like we talked a lot about during the season the amount of drops the amount of throwaways. So you're talking about getting a 70 with all of that included which by the way is what Jared Goff was able to do with him in Detroit right so and he's like yeah. Like that's the goal so drops throwaways all those things put together they're trying to get the 70 and that that that makes sense to me because we know Ben Johnson has high expectations and and he's not trying he's not trying to lower the bar going into year two here with him and Caleb hit the like button for seventy percent hit the like button for Hogan the desert hit the like button for Greg going to the gym hit the like button for Donnie who's just crushing it in the chat on a daily basis before we get to the next clip just to underline he talked about timing needing to be better he talked about footwork needed to be better he talked about ball placement needed to be better he talked about they want to get more big plays down the field did the Bears not lead the NFL and explosive plays last year. So apparently we're just going to lap the field if everything comes to be in the way Ben sees this what you know the capabilities of this offense which is a beautiful thing. Let's talk about throwaways and just throw away specifically Ben Johnson this is a great little facial expression you get to the start of this clip and I'll be honest with you that the throwaways aren't even something that I'm really to me that's part of the when you talk about seventy percent that's part of the thirty percent is the throwaways I think that's going to happen as well so you want to get to seventy with all that factored in expected drops that you're always going to have. Oh yeah. The throwaways all that if you want to be elite in this league you're going to have your top five to three quarterbacks in the league completing that clip at this point and so that's where we want to be that's where he wants to be he wants to be one of the best ever so what why are we shying away from that goal and when you watch the tape that there's there's that to be had to so it's we're all in it together and we're going to find a way to make significant jump here this season. Why are we shying away from that goal I mean you once had a goal to be a major media figure no one thought you can do it and now. What I like about the why are we shy he wants to be the greatest or the best why shy away from that that's what I've always appreciated about you know the idea of having Caleb Williams and Ben Johnson on your team like you don't need to make excuses for these guys and if they're not hitting certain goals like to me it speaks to what the potential of both these guys are by saying yeah we need to do all these things better because they are capable of it they don't need the excuses they have every opportunity here in front of them to be able to get this done and you know when you talk about the throwaways or you talk about the drops like to me that's all built in and I understand that but you know I just think this is a big opportunity here this offseason for them to kind of reach that mark I think the dude's locked in on what's going to take to win the Super Bowl and yeah we'll have 30% in completions but that's included in when everything breaks down and Cubs got to dirt it because we didn't do what's you know everything right in front of them the other thing to hug I say with the throwaways or the drops if you look at the top teams in the league last year they replicate of teams that had dropped the top drop teams in the league they also replicate the teams that also had the most explosive plays in the league the Rams were right up there in teams that had drops well this is our couple teams that pushed the ball down the field so I think those yeah at times weren't hand-in-hand right when you when you hunt explosives you when you take those chances you're gonna have more plays that the where the ball hits the ground but Ben doesn't care right like he's like we're still gonna do that and we're gonna continue to elevate our you know but there's also easier ways to get explosives through the run game or through you know setting up bubble screens you know which are higher completion throws that you pick up all the yards after the catch and I feel like the Bears feel like they have plenty of guys who can do that right now too I just hearing Ben talk about that and and not you know lowering expectations it's just so refreshing we're so far away from the hits principle we're we're we're talking about the head coach just laying it out there we he wants to be elite we want to be elite we're talking Super Bowls here we've had previous regimes here talk Super Bowl but operate more and like this you know so much talk about fundamentals and then like of course all that stuff still matters Ben still talking about details all the time but in the meantime he's not lowering expectations and I just find it so refreshing like the Bears are just in a different world right now with how they're operating from a football standpoint hit the like button for Hogue reminding us that Maddie refluse is long gone and hit hits principle has left the building please hit the like button so calm can stop setting up every club by saying hit the like button 42 likes down enough likes hit the like button for King Book of World making it making his appearance there good to see him alright let's talk about ball placement specifically ball placement and all about ball placement because ball placement is key so that's got to get better too when it comes to ball placement like what's the what's the number one thing that you feel like you start with to start to get that to be just a little bit sharper well I think mechanics is where it starts and so of course we changed the footwork a little bit last offseason you could tell it become more consistent as we went through the season the comfort level grew just being aligned towards the target makes a major difference with him that's one and then the other one is is having complete trust in where your route runners going to be and so that took some time is the season went I think we have a lot better feel now for what we're coaching as a coaching staff our consistent consistency and our how demanding we are in terms of getting that done on on the field and so I think we're going to be in a really good spot here going forward between how we're coaching it what we're seeing from our route runners being able to get them on the same page as Caleb earlier here in this offseason so I'm going to make that our Xfinity big takeaway which is presented by Xfinity imagine that look to me when you listen to Ben there he's got a very clear idea of what is key for his quarterback and what is key for the people that are going to be catching the football on the team which by the way that was awesome yesterday when he's asked like so this is a great opportunity for Rome and Luther Burton to step in and catch balls well it's actually a great opportunity for the tight end room the running back room the wide receiver room to compete for who's going to be catching balls from Caleb so but I think he's got you know I think they've been with them for a year Hogan you know I assume you would agree with this this is the key for you reaching the next level let's coach that up and I think it just got to give you confidence that they'll get there well I think that last part you know everyone wants to talk about accuracy and ball placement there I did usually is a quarterback conversation and I think I think the league play callers and schemers in this league look at it more like it's an offensive it's on the offense as a whole so it's about the timing and so it's interesting when you look at I agree it got better as the season went along the season also ended on a play where the ball and the shiva weren't in the right spot at the same time right and it led to an interception so it became a thing that you know continues to just still needs improvement obviously and Ben was on Ben is gonna hold them to that so I think it's interesting when you look at the wide receiver room right because Rome I think the timing was there more times than not but he wasn't always on the field and then he had some drop issues Luther Burton was continuing to learn the playbook as season went along and how much can they load him up in year two I think it's a big reason why Khalif Raymond is here because I feel like that's somebody that not just Ben Johnson but also Antoine Randall L feel like they could really trust to do exactly what we're talking about right here be in the right place at the right time even if it's at a you know a much smaller clip even if we're just talking about 40 catches over the course of the year but that's why you bring in the running backs to the conversation as well and especially the tight ends because it would not shock anybody not just in Chicago but maybe in the entire league if Colson Loveland is actually the best weapon on the team next year so and we saw at the end of the season especially in that Packer playoff game when Caleb needed to go to a player that he knew where he was going to be on pretty much any down but especially third and fourth down the money downs he kept going back to Colson Loveland and they really did develop that that connection so it's not just the wide receivers I actually have questions about the wide receivers right now in terms of the timing they need to prove it but I do feel really good about the tight ends and I think the running backs are you know certainly add to those those plays as well I I agree and then you heard Ryan polls you know if you go back and listen to Hogan Johns he refers to Colson Loveland as an all pro tight end so he feels good about him as well I want to shout out Dan Wheater for joining the the hack need bears podcast here as we're moving along I mean my biggest takeaway though is the devil is in the deeper details and I just don't think that they were able to get into the the true nuance of what this offense is last year at this time you're implementing an offensive concept this outside zone right and and very intricate route route running concepts and what takes away from that all the time you have to spend installing that is the nuanced details in the quarterback play the receiver route running the the catching of the football and I think that's what this offseason is going to be all about is now taking this to the next level because of the details and so for me maybe this is something that all coaches even some of the failed Bears coaches have past have done at this point in the year but over these last two days really hearing Ben Johnson illustrate how much they're still self-scouting the offense from last year to find those little improvements those little details that they can push this summer is what excites me so let's play that here real quick because to me that I think is what is paramount to how this offense is going to get to the next level it took a little little bit of time before we got onto the self-scout but we've made a lot of headway particularly defenses ahead of the offense right now I think that they're almost done offense we still have a few more cut-ups that we got to make it through some situational stuff but it's been it's been a lot of fun there's a there's a lot of good there's a lot of areas where we can get better as well which we've had some cut-ups and I remember getting done with them with the staff at the Cali it leaves a bad taste in your mouth and and yet when you go back and you reflect on it a little bit it's like you know what it's actually it's a great thing because boy how much better can we get going from last year to this next year and so I think I'm really encouraged with where that stands specifically with the quarterback he did so many good things on tape and I tend to view it from the start of the season all the way through the end and that you get you that gets lost a little bit when you do the self-scout because everything is more situational and so you might have a clip from the first game mixed in with the clip from the last game and you lose sight of how much better it got as you went and so that's what that's what gives me the most encouragement is the growth that he made from before the bi-week to the last month or two of the season and so I think that's that's the best part of it. So I mean for me Hogue that that's something I preached all the way through the second half of the season as we were following the Bears explosive play ranking which was basically number one in the league every week I just kept hammering home it was like repetitive at points where I said there's so much untapped potential with this team they they're leading the league in explosives and yet every week you do the the quarterback report and really break down what they're missing and so it's it's cool to hear Ben you know now that he's kind of out of the fire kind of have that epiphany like yeah this sucks looking at the tape but there's so much of a silver lining that there's so much untapped potential that you can put on top of how much good they had out of last year and that's the big reason why I just can't wait until OTA start and we you know we get into some real practices to to look at again because I think it's going to be fascinating as much as this might be a little bit more of a more boring offseason because the Bears were actually good during the regular season and they don't have a top 10 pick and you know there's they didn't do as much in free agency I do find the offseason program that's about to start on April 20th to be super super fascinating because they they've lost enough on both sides of the ball and yet they have enough new pieces and young pieces especially on offense right with Roman Dunes they how does he bounce back how does that chemistry continue to look with Caleb and then just Caleb's development in general right just how cuz cuz they can't afford if they're really gonna start yes he improved like he did I we all totally agree with what Ben was talking about there it was pretty remarkable what they were able to accomplish considering where they started in in what was a pretty rough training camp but they can't afford to have another rough training camp right like it needs to it doesn't necessarily need to start where it ended last year but it better be at least to that point by the time the regular season begins like we can't be talking about another August full of you know rough practices there's gonna be some don't get me wrong but we need to see we need to see that but they need to see that bar you know continue to rise and I just think that that really sets us up for a super interesting training camp between the new pieces the young pieces and how they continue to get better and grow and that will wrap up our Xfinity big takeaway presented by our friends at Xfinity imagine that imagine that offseason gets going here April 20th which is 21 days from now Gregory and you should be ready for that because you're Johnny Mr. Workout. I'm ready. Hey Hogue. Forward for you guys to all be there for it. Hit the like button for what Hogue's got to do the rest of the day. What do you have to do the rest of the day? Hogue are you going you going golfing you going back to the top of the mountain you and JJ getting lunch what do we got going on over there. No I think I annoyed JJ enough because he left it to be fully honest I was kind of scrambling for a place to sit down and talk to you guys and I saw JJ and so I just sat down right next to him it was like hey buddy I'm going to bother you here for a few minutes now he's gone so I think I did bother him. I'm going to sit out here and try to you know connect with some some more people see what else I can get you but yeah at some point I'm going to hopefully the sun comes back out to get some sun and it's actually thinking about going to the Diamondbacks game tonight to play in the Tigers so we'll see that's a bad idea don't do that. That's you can do better I was in Hawaii for two weeks and it's complaining about not getting any Sunday Diamondbacks and Tigers I would rather with all due respect if you go you got to go to the hot tub can you name the pool can you name a Diamondback. No I can't no chance no I can't Aaron not along I could name can you name a Tiger. Scooble is he a Tiger. There's a Scooble. Jason Benetti. Jaysson Benetti. Javi Baez. Javi Baez is a Tiger that's good. Hey Hulk last thing and John's good join us here for part two of Hogan John's part two. Do you know if you were looking at a duck how to tell between a male and a female because I had an argument you do how do you tell the ducks are the males are mallards and they're they're colored like they have colors on their feathers they've colors on their feathers. Oh did you know that. Oh no you didn't know that did you. Yeah no I just what were you saying. I thought you were looking at duck balls or something duck balls that's a good one from Greg. I don't think ducks have balls. Greg take me with you next time. I was going to say Stephen how badly do I need to get back like should I. I'll do the Hawaii and the Phoenix. I'll just join the family. Well there were two ducks last night and I and Joquel and asked me like where there was a male and a female like I have no idea and he's and she's like well you don't know how to tell a duck and I'm like no I don't and neither does anybody else. It's not. It's not beneath me. Yeah. Well you know it wouldn't be off the rails but Johns. Johns is supposed to be here. He said he's just pulling in. His flight was late. All this air. The airport for you. Ask us here lately. Well there's storms in Chicago so I guess his plane was like circling over O'Hare for like 20 minutes. So I mean that's just a good thing about that for Johns is that he probably had a snack because that guy always goes snack on a flight. No one goes snack on an air full shot. Could we board the other time. Good dude rocks. You know he's you know that they that they these these like grapes and crackers and cheeses and they sell these things and I you know I always just go with the you know here's the peanut that you get her. Here's the pot. Here's the pretzel. John's just he looks at me you know proudly way of confidently you get you're going to get a snack box with me. I've never gone snack box until I met Adam John's. So all right. Interesting. Yeah that's really Stephen delete that part of the show whatever just happened. Let's get back on track here to the you know Hogan Johns. Just having a great time. And now we go from home to John line Phoenix to shoot to the to the to the to where he's wherever John's is palatial estate is palatial estate on the Xfinity mobile hotline just like that. John's a great job with Ben. Great job with Ryan. Good to see you buddy. Thank you. Glad you traveled home safe and I don't know if you just heard the last 90 seconds of bad podcasting but I shouted out your ability to order a snack box on an airplane better than most guys never know about the snack box and you help me out. See. I'm always surprised at how many people don't know about the snack boxes. They're cheap. They're affordable. They give you a lot in there. United does it. American does it. And I think it's good option. Did you have the snack box on the way home today. I did not. I did not. I tried my best to sleep because we left the the party last night about 10 30 and I got up at 3 a.m. local in Phoenix to catch my 6 a.m. flight. So I tried to sleep as much as I could. Can you tell us about the party who was at the party. What was going on at the party. I want to go to a party. Well everybody was there for Roger Goodell. Everybody was there but you got. I did. Someday I'll get to go to a party. All right. Let's let before we play clips here just like we did with with with Hogue what your number one take away with your sit down with either Ryan polls and or Ben Johnson and or both of the number one thing you you took away from that experience was. Number one take away. To me it's got to be how Ben Johnson continues to just set the tone for the 2026 season. He's done with 2025. He is on to this year. He's looking forward to Caleb Williams coming into the building on April 20th and it's time to get back to work. It's full steam ahead. Whatever happened the past is the past. It doesn't really matter much to what the Bears are trying to build in 2026 especially with a lot of new faces now that some of the stuff will carry over. I get it but I like how Ben Johnson has shifted everyone's attention including those fans who happened to pat him on the back to 2026. Yeah it would be very hard for me to run into him at a Cubs game and not thank him profusely for everything he's done over the last year. I know he doesn't want to talk about it anymore but if he crosses my back that wriggly he's going to hear about it. I want to thank you and I want to tell you that I love you and I do you know who I am. My name is Greg Braggs. I do the Bears podcast. The Bears don't credential me. But someday they will someday. All right let's get into some sound here. Johnson have you react on the fly. We're at the secret the body language part of the program here and I believe this was a whole question as to why it matters so much to Ben Caleb's body language and then what you know Ben talked about how that was a point of emphasis and here's here's Hogue following up on the details if you will. How much did you see him grow as a leader as the season went along because just from our eyes and we don't see every part of the game you don't either as you're you know looking towards the field but what's going on behind you like it seems like especially from year one to year two as we witness him and went from more of him just sort of sitting on the bench waiting to be sort of told versus it seemed like by the end of last season he was really taking charge there on the sideline. Yeah. Well I think that's the confidence that he had and what he was doing. What we were doing as an offense and as a team and certainly what what his job his responsibility was for each and every play. And I think that confidence really showed on on game day. It was no secret that we made his body language his demeanor on game day a point of emphasis last spring when we came to the building. And because of that he was conscious of it. You know I think he took a lot of pride in trying to make an improvement there. And I think he did for the most part. You know there's still plenty of room to grow. But he made a tremendous step forward in terms of being a leader being a positive influence on the people around him. I know his teammates respect the heck out of them. They know exactly what they're going to get particularly when the game's on the line like that. He's going to be at his best. And so I really look forward to that relationship with him and his teammates continuing to go forward. John's thoughts. Well I honestly thought of the interaction that he had in the sidelines with his teammates. I think it was during the playoff game where he was pretty adamant and he was getting on his guys for not executing that they the way they should have in those moments. I like that. I like that energy. I think it's needed sometimes. That's part of being a leader is doing some things that make your teammates uncomfortable. Sometimes you have to fire them up. So that's what I was thinking in the moment when Ben Johnson was talking about that. And just like in general like the energy that I got from Ben Johnson and like Ryan Pohl's and those interactions. They just like how Cale Williams has bought into everything that Ben Johnson is selling whether it's the body language whether it's setting different statistical goals coming up for this next season year two together. They're buying in like and it's Ryan Pohl's identifying that Cale Williams is enjoying being coached hard by Ben Johnson. I think that was one storyline coming into this relationship. And now we got to see that blossom throughout the 20 25 season. Well Peter Bukowski our good friend who I love to yell at all the time especially on radio row. He's kind of been making ruffling feathers with Bears fans because he shared a quote of Javon Bullard from the Packers talking about the playoff game. And when we're talking about body language he said you know when the when the bear when the Packers were beating the bears in the playoffs Bullard could see the dread in the Bears players eyes. And it was a quote from Bullard saying we're on y'all ass and you're acting like you mother blankers don't even want to play no more. But we need that instinct to kill more. And he says like no not today not tomorrow. We're going to beat y'all up. And I'm paraphrasing what a great tweet to bring back. I don't think we but like my whole point of it is my whole point of it is is he thought that the bears were dead in the water. Javon Bullard. But there was one quarterback in that moment that did not blink. You know. So while he thought they that they were done I think the whole point of body language Caleb was not done in that game clearly because they went on to win it. Well there's body language. There's yelling at your teammates to be better in certain moments and then there's delivering time and time again throughout the season in the most crucial of moments in such big games like you did against the Packers for example. So Bullard could say whatever he wants. We know what happened at the end of that game. We know who delivered for the Chicago Bears hit the like button for John Z being here and hit the like button for whatever Greg just did as far as the Bukowski Bullard combination that I was about body language. No I got it. Well and let's let's get back to Ben actually and why body language matters to the head coach of the Chicago Bears. You know personally I really like that you made that an emphasis the body language thing. Why why does that matter to you. Like why why do you feel like that is something that I because I think maybe some other coaches would just be like you know it's just what really matters on the field. Not necessarily what a guy is showing in the camera or whatever. What but why does that matter. Well I think when you are in a leadership position which I think almost every quarterback naturally at the NFL level that they're looked to by their teammates he's in command of the huddle each and every play. You know he's the only one speaking in the huddle each and every play. So because of that people look to you and if you've got moments of weakness or looks of despair on your face or palms up like you're blaming the officials or somebody else. It's just you don't want that because it just trickles down to the rest of the crew. It's I think he's getting to the point where hey I'm always in control of this thing. We're never out of it. So it's all good man. It's all good just as long as there's time left on this clock we're going to we're going to find a way and we're going to figure it out. And I think he kind of as a season went he started to believe that himself and I think that's what you saw. I think I've got an Xfinity actually I know I have an Xfinity big takeaway part two on this and John's I want yours as well. But we'll do that in a second. So let's talk about this leadership development here John Z because if you go back to year one you had the Eberfluss into Thomas Jones into disaster city into who is the leader around here. And for Caleb to have come from that part to where it's at right now that you got Ben Johnson talking about the players respect him. And that is a it's a long journey in a short period of time. And it's a phenomenal development for the Bears. That's that's that's my Xfinity big takeaway part two of the day. I do agree. We're yet on that whole thought process that it's a phenomenal development. I think it's a great development for the Bears that kill Williams can be looked as their leader especially going into 2026 when you have Kevin Byer no longer on the roster Tremade Edmonds is no longer on the roster. D.G. Moore is no longer on the roster. This roster guys is going to be looking for someone to step up in. It's got to be the quarterback. It's got to be the first overall pick. And I think Caleb has grown into that. He's embraced that responsibility. But sometimes guys you got to grow into this. You got to have some success on the field to feel good about what you're saying. Like if you're playing bad everything you're saying behind the scenes doesn't really matter as much to your teammates when you're not playing as well. But when you're backing it up when you're backing up your talk I think that matters in a locker room. Well I also just think over the last year and you heard Ryan polls talk about it with you guys and in terms of how they could see how Caleb didn't run from the tough coaching. He embraced it and and and Ben was hard on him last year and he'll continue to be hard on him. You know that was the biggest key is they knew they were bringing in an elite play caller. But how were Caleb and Ben Johnson going to mesh together. And that required Caleb embracing what Ben's trying to implement into him. Not just from strategic X's and O standpoint but from a mentality temperament maturity standpoint. And that's where you have to put your egos to the side and find that middle ground. And that's the beauty of what their opposites in a lot of ways. But as Ben point has pointed out more than a few times they're very alike in terms of their competitiveness. And so it's about the biggest compliment that Ben can pay. And that and that to me is is the secret sauce of why this is working. Even if Caleb wasn't necessarily like built in the lab the way Ben Johnson's quarterbacks typically had been in years past. I think one of the highlights from our conversation with with Ben at the owner's meetings there was him saying that him and Caleb are wired the same way. Now we heard him say that earlier last year about him and Tyson Bajant. But to hear him say that about Caleb Williams now that's such an extreme positive going forward to have those two. I just think back to like how things unfolded with Matt Nagy and Mr. Biscay. They met nagy never talked this way about Mitch that their wire the same way. And eventually things unraveled pretty quickly for both of them come their second season together. That doesn't seem to be the case here with Caleb and Ben. They had to go through some ups and downs. And I think part of this is how Ben wants to coach like his hard style of coaching would ultimately lead to some ups and downs for Caleb because that's how growth happens. He was going to make it easy for Caleb. Never said he would. Yes. I mean some things are tailored to what Caleb does best. But he always kept Caleb Williams's plate full. That's how development happens. That hard coaching. That's how development happens. We got a couple more clips here but we got to get to the hard hitting part of the interview here. Johns you brought Ben Johnson coffee. Did you put cream in the coffee. Did you go straight black. And how does it feel that Ben Johnson trusted you to deliver him coffee. Drank the coffee. I mean there's a lot going right in your world right here. Wow. You guys got to be behind the scenes cute from Adam Hogue. We did. We did straight straight black coffee. So I don't know if he gave you the full details. So we were probably like interview number nine or 10 on the agenda here for Ben Johnson going through Chicago media car wash. And I thought he looked tired. You know that's a long day at the owners meetings. There's a lot of meetings a lot of conversations. I was filling myself up a coffee so I thought you know what let's get the head out. Let's go to coffee as well. It's a good strategy. And the more I think about it blacks the only way to go here you know because it's it's it's it's if he doesn't if he needs the coffee is going to drink it no matter what but if he does have a dairy allergy then he's out. No I may have done my research before I knew it was coffee order. Scouting report. Scouting report. Yes. I knew how he took his coffee. Do you go bears PR for the coffee. A good reporter never reveals his sources. This is this is this is impressive. This is why I shouted out how he drinks his coffee. Now we can have a conversation on the fact that Ben Johnson he's not he's not watering it down. He's going straight for the real stuff. Super Bowl Super Bowl Super Bowl I need I'm heavy on the cream. Right. Which I've never had a cup of coffee in my life. Ever once. Right. You make up for that. Dr. Pup out of your out of your pocket over there. What do you mean I've done a bunch of hard drugs just never coffee. And we've reached the hard drugs part of the program. Alrighty then. I'm proud of you. Okay. Speaking of hard drugs what about the center position. Ben Johnson can you talk to us about Drew Dalman and Garrett Bradbury. I forget exactly what you pulled out of this but that's our last Ben Johnson clip of the day Johnson. So we're going to play it for you and you're going to react to it. Damn it. Ben on the center situation. Like how would you describe Drew Dalman's impact on your offense to success but also Caleb's development. And then how does that maybe affect expectations for Gary coming in. Yeah it's significant. There's a reason why we targeted him last year in free agency. And you know like I said before he's a big reason why we were able to get the plane off the ground. Not just as a team but certainly for us as an offense because I mean this this this thing is really driven through the center. We load them up. They have to be very smart. They got to be able to understand. What looks who we want to identify and they need to be able to problem solve when naturally on game day something gets thrown at us that we weren't anticipating. And so he was able to do that. I know he was certainly he felt that pressure each and every week and he took a lot of pride in it. And so He is essentially the quarterback of our run game and our protection system. And I don't think that's going to change going forward now with Garrett. Fortunately. You know we'll get a good feel as we go through spring and camp what Garrett is capable of but he comes across as a very very smart guy as well. So I'm hopeful that we're not going to miss a beat there. He's played a lot of football in this league and he's seen a lot of different offense the systems himself. So I think that the transition is going to be fairly safe and seamless for him. I'm trying to stay focused on Ben but this idiot next to me is calling boom bots a loser. So so hit the like button for Braggs versus boom bots because that's really what the show that I want to be doing right now. But sounds to me like it like it. You know maybe it's he's not going to be as good as Dalman but it doesn't seem like there's a whole lot of concern with the center position right now. John see I don't know how you am I being too relaxed about expectations are high for Garrett. Bradbury. That's one reason why I brought up this question because I knew how much of an impact he had on Caleb. I knew how much of an impact he had on the run game. So were expectations going to be the same for the the acquisition from the New England Patriots and they absolutely are. They weren't going to be in on Linderbaum. The oddish you know that price didn't meet what the Bears were looking for. So to see them pivot for another experience center in in Bradbury. I still think it's been. They're not Ben Johnson's but Ryan Poles is the Bears is best off season move because they were very surprised by Drew Dalman's retirement. The Bears offense. Ben Johnson's offense requires a very smart center who is mobile. Garrett Bradbury is that and the smarts are like number one. You have to be able to identify everything for us at the line of scrimmage. And not only that like you always talk about setting protections. It's identifying how your blocking scheme is like how it works in the run game as well as Ben Johnson just said. So smarts are number one. Yep. That's what I said. I mean we wouldn't win the breaking new show we did or you guys did. I mean that I was in the chat for it. But I said like for him his center position it goes intelligence one talent to he needs his center to have a complete understanding of his offense. And he talks about the amount of responsibilities that that entails. And that's where of all the different things that we've talked about here today and yesterday of how they'll be able to really dial into the details to take this offense. The next level. This is the one hurdle that they have to overcome is the reset of the center position. And so you hope that there's a seamless transition. But that still has to matriculate. That's something that hasn't happened yet. They got to get together as a team and see how it goes. And let's hope that as we get through the summer this becomes something that isn't just a one year marriage. That that's my hope. I know everybody's like talking about you know who the next center will be. I don't want to keep going through you know a revolving door of centers. They need to have some stability at that position in order for this offense to really you know jettison to the 70 touchdowns that we saw the Lions have their final year. Yeah. Well with Ben Johnson. Well one of the questions they saw there in a chat quickly was whether or not you know it's what's more likely an extension for Bradbury or taking a center with the early in the draft. I think if there's an extension for Bradbury it'll happen after the draft. I know the Bears have done a ton of work on centers in this draft and maybe Ben Johnson wants to find a long term young solution in this year's draft class. But I wouldn't discuss a Bradbury extension to after or really probably after rookie minicamp. Yeah maybe maybe they do draft one or maybe Luke Newman is somebody that's still potentially on that radar as well as we have reached the top of the hour. And if you want to become a diehard at C HGO sports use the QR code for 36 bucks. You can use that code J HNS that'll get you $36 for the entire year exclusive written content discounts on merchandise discounts and events including our draft party that's coming up here. One of our favorite venues to do shows that excited to get there. We always have a great time covering the draft with Joe's on Weed Street. So 10 bucks is all you got to pay to get in the door and hang out and have a great time. Hogue will be buying drinks and actually you should be buying your own drinks. If you're going to be drinking 65 bucks all you can consume. Ubers are available. So you know that is as good of a deal as you're going to get on a draft night with all you can drink. So come on out have some fun and maybe you'll see Braggs and boom bots get together and they can. Well if boom bots can boom bots is now a firmer officer of the law who could arrest you that night. Good luck to you. John's any final takeaways. You know I don't know anything behind the scenes you could share that we don't know that's interesting perhaps. Well I left the owner's meeting thinking that everything and anything can be on the table at number 25. It includes left tackle despite the investment. It includes safety. It includes pass rusher for some reason to me maybe just based on things I'm learning maybe those two second round picks is the ideal range for the bears to strike on the the second tier of pass rushers at number 57 and 60 maybe double up. Not a bad idea but hearing Ben Johnson talk hearing Ryan Poles talk they're going to stick with this best player available approach. They're just not going to draft the field needs and I know needs come into effect later on in the draft but Ben Johnson doesn't want to operate that way. So if there's like a left tackle that falls number 25 and he's the best player in your board I think that the competition is about to get a little bit deeper. That would be wild and I would probably make a point saying that they gave Braggs and Jones some decent amount of money and led Kevin by our walk and now they drafted a left tackle. That's not I elite roster management but I get it. You don't know who's going to be available. So that's why they did it and then that's really not. That's fine. It's really not that much money for Braggs and Jones. It's 10 million if he ends up being their starting left tackle the whole year. But it's five guaranteed dude. Right. OK. Well buyer signed for nine million. You say it's it's it's it's it's it's not exactly the same but it's close. All right. John's you're awesome. Thank you for being here. I know we had a great show on Friday at the World Loved. I thought you loved it too. So you know just to come back. I did come. OK good. I thought it sucked personally. Listen you know boom. We new podcast Tuesday nights Braggs and boom bots bears after dark. He can't be that's past boom bots his bedtime. No boom. He's already had his apple sauce by that boom. Bots on a Tuesday night. Don't sleep on him. He's a B. He'll boom and he'll box. All right. John's he gets some rest. We'll we'll talk to you soon. See you boys. OK. John's on Thursday. Well let's talk about the draft board. We got a few Ryan Poles clips here. Thank you very much. And you want to say that we talk. No we don't want to save that. We want to play it. Yeah. You got time. I don't have any other shows today. We're good. Finally you don't have to work so much today. You insulting me. No I'm not. He said in a very insulting way. I know the surprise you actually don't have anything going on. Not kind of would of course. So then I will then something they'll come up here. So you never know. But yeah let's get into it. I mean I mean you know we heard John's talk about the draft board and what potentially could be at 25. Anything is wide open. But here is Ryan Poles talking about that draft board with Hogan John's on the Hogan John's podcast. Do you feel like you've had enough out of what you've invested so far. And and how do you get more out of it in 2026 to really become a team that's really always affecting the quarterback. Yeah I would say just you look at the draft. You know when I've been here I think we've we've taken the right mentality and taken the best available. And that's been very offensive. Centric. And I think that's paid off for us. We got all pro tackle. I think you know Colson is going to be all pro tight end. So we've we've done some really good things there. And it just hasn't lined up to be defense aligned. In terms of afraid to see we've we've had in trades. We've had a guys that I think have improved our D line. I think with the shift in in staff year two has opportunity to be better. I like to see Montes continue to grow and make more impact plays as we move forward. I was a little bummed obviously with Dio and Chamar's injury. I thought Dio was going to have an impact for us. And he's pushing hard to get back and to help us. I think Chamar was going to be on the same track is Ozzie Luther and Colson. So really need both those guys that continue to get healthy and step up. Same thing for you know Dex. And I think books coming along too. So maybe a little bit slower than what we all want. But I think we're on the right path. And again we'll see how the draft lines up to see if that's a player that can come in to make an impact for us. I know there's been a lot of teams that I look to in terms of sustained success like Baltimore and Pittsburgh that have done a really good job in that space picking guys that have helped them at the D line position. So we'll see what's available for us. I think the biggest mistake you can make is is forcing something just because that's what you need. That's what I was going to ask you. You got to stay disciplined. I'm best player available even if it's still offense. You do. I truly believe that. And the cool thing is Ben and I are lined up that way too. So we'll hit at the right time. Unfortunately all drafts are a little bit different and it doesn't always kind of whatever group of rookies are coming into the NFL. It's it's different every year. So we'll say opportunistic for things to happen outside the draft like we've been doing. But in terms of you know allocating the draft capital there we're really going to take the best player available approach to it. So it'll take a little bit of time. Hopefully it happens this next year. But now we'll just keep doing having a discipline approach. Well Greg discipline is key. You're exhibiting it. I think it's a new scene. A new seating arrangement for me right now the leg cross and just end of the show just very very professional. I can't cross my leg like that. Well some of us have elite flexibility and or I definitely don't. Yeah. The point the point I'm trying to make here Gregory is that he is not freaking out. You know that's the past. He could he could say like yeah that's a that's a part of our roster that we really haven't gotten to the level that we need to. And we of course will continue to address it in the draft. Not saying we're going to take a guy at 25 because we're still doing best player available. But we are you know we know that we need to actively address that. And quite frankly I've had some misses there. Maury saying that he believes the dial is he's hoping that I was going to come back and be affected that Shamar is going to get in there. I thought he almost buried the if I was going to if I was pulls I was going to talk confidently about the defensive line and especially the edge part I would underline how much he I believe in in Austin Booker and what he's going to do in year three. You know I'm expecting a whole you know a breakout year. That's where for me it's it's still more of a leap of faith to trust that they'll be able to piece this together on defense versus where I say Ryan or Ben Johnson can do whatever the F he wants on offense. They have my full trust on how they're going to build this offense into the war machine. It will become on defense to sit here and talk about Dio and Shamar Turner and not worrying about if they have to draft Edge at 25 because they're going to be OK. And you know Ben Johnson really illustrating the last couple days that hey our coaching staff is still intact on the defensive side of the ball. And that's why you should trust that we'll be able to make this work. It does require a bit of a leap of faith. You know they were able to do luckily run into Nishan right last year who wasn't a perfect cornerback but obviously was productive. You know he's one of the top players with takeaways. You lose Kevin Byard. He led the league in takeaways. You only got you lost both your safeties. You only got one in Kobe Bryant. Right. You've brought in some you know mixed match guys Cam Lewis the corner you know from from Buffalo. But your corners right now. You know Tyreek Stevenson who fell out of favor at the end of the year. I don't know any other way to put it. They didn't have him on the field at the end of the year. Jalen Johnson was playing over him and he was playing hurt. So I just there's a little bit of still a concern of how this is all going to fit together. And are they going to be able to get to the quarterback and will they have enough on the back end to make up for it if they can't get to the quarterback. Right. Well we're winding back to the Braxton Jones part of the conversation here and just money being spent. I mean the Sean Wright that was basically the same money identical what what Nishan got from the Jets to what the Bears gave Braxton. So the best player available is all it's all fine and dandy. And it's how I would do it. I completely am on board. That's how you should draft. It's you will come out ahead. But they are there has been some leap of faith and you just mentioned Tyreek too seems to me that he might have fallen out of favor last year but they're still investing in him. He's still here. They let Nishan go. So there's some faith that Tyreek is going to hit another level. I hope so. I'm a big Tyreek Stevenson proponent. I think he I think he has all the every time they put him out he made a play. Look at at the end of last year when they were playing the Packers. He didn't play the whole game. Then they put him in the second half. He immediately forces a fumble on the goal line. You know like I like the physicality and the dog mentality that Tyreek Stevenson plays with. And if you watch some of his Instagram stuff I know the motivated thing has become kind of a running joke with Bears fans here this offseason with a motivated dial. But it definitely feels like we've got a motivated Tyreek Stevenson this offseason. So I look forward to seeing how that looks here at training camp. Yeah. And look anybody in the NFL with that amount of money and that amount of joy getting to play the sport that you love they're going to be motivated. You would think if you're not that's a real problem. So it's a but to your point not to downplay it at all. It's a huge year for Tyreek your NFL career and how much money you're going to make and where we're going to be. It's it's it's on the line. So and I'm rooting for him because I like Tyreek one of my guys and you're one of my guys Greg I had a great time with you today. Thank you. You really are doing good work off the off the ice here off off off off the ice off the pot getting after it creating pot pod. This is a pot. I thought you said pot off the pot. I'm trying I'm trying to make I'm trying to be I'm trying to build a bridge between boombots and you step onto the bridge. You can do this. Oh Barney Fife. Yeah. Great show. Great show except for car from Pizzatola always on brand over there. Crystal's texting me telling me that I look sick. I think I feel great. I had a great show today. I mean I feel great. I look great. I am great. And I'm a delusional all at the same time. All right we're back tomorrow one o'clock if you missed the full interviews with so we just end it cleanly. There's no off the rails. There's All you got you want me to go off the rails. There's just like no entertainment. It was all like information today. You know Gregory I brought up ducks in the middle. I brought up I brought up male female duck. I've been I created a brawl between you and boombots. I mean it was a box did that. You did nothing. I leaned into it. I brought I created boombots versus you. Carm sweet baby wants a tennis story. You play tonight. Yeah I play the I play double D. Then I mean double D. Don Donenbergs. He's never lost to a Donnie Bergman. I'm scared that I'm going to lose to him tonight. Body's feeling a little tight. But we're going to get after it and try to think of a fun story I could tell you. You want to you want to what do you want. Pick a topic any topic. I'll tell you a story to any topic. You can go. You can go Jordan. You could go sports in general. You could go love life. You could go family. What do you want. Give me something. Give me a give me a not love life. We're not doing that one. No love life. OK. No. That's a good one. We've heard enough Jordan stories. So who was the first girl that like rejected you that like it sat with you for years. First girl that rejected me that sat with me for years. That's a that's a deep. Are we just talking. Are you talking about are we talking about like middle school crushes. Yeah. Yeah I school. Well I mean like literally every girl in this in middle school dog me. Garden hoser I don't like you anymore. Just so you know you go a little. You're you're you're you're a bad garden hoser. Well so the the the cutest girl back in the day of good old Edwin junior high was Jill Nissen. She was she was just a real looker there. And I did my best like I tried every angle to and what I ended up doing was just you know being coming sort of like a confident for the guys that she would go for it. Like I was that you know that's what it was. That's that's the friend zone. Yeah. Well we weren't even friends though. Like I didn't get any good. Like there was nothing good there. But you know she was a great you know what I was you know what I was you know what I was most jealous of in seventh and eighth grade. We'll end it on this like so in seventh grade you at you at you back where I grew up they had they had Baker ball. That's what all the kids played basketball. Well my family was so out to lunch they didn't even know that Baker ball existed. So I showed up to seventh grade basketball tryouts and like they knew all the kids because they were all in this Baker. Nobody knew who I was. So they did. They had two on two two on two with all the kids and then there were like six guys left at the end. Me and five kids that couldn't walk. So so I I I took the ball and I and I and I just ran by him and laid it in laid it in laid it in laid it in. So I so I made the first cut. OK. So that was like out out of nowhere. Here's who's this weird kid over there that says hairs left and right. He looks like he smells and hasn't played in any of the leagues. But yeah we're going to keep him. And so then I play incredible in in in the next in the in part two. But you know so I but I don't make the team I get cut because all political it's a part of a year the worst. But so anyway the point is that I would sit there and watch these games when I would go and they would the cheerleaders the seventh grade cheerleaders they would like they would you know they'd seem like sink it brag sink it. And I was so jealous of just having that that chant. I was wanted to sink it Carmen sink it. OK. I never got to sink it. Still haven't sunk it. I mean kind of I guess things have changed a little bit here. But I wanted I wanted to sink it. It's sad. Yeah I was sad. But you know and then I went through puberty my junior high school and then I started to become a decent basketball player. It's the way it goes. Got to grow in life. I wish there were been steroids back in seventh grade. I would have taken them and that'll do it for today's show. Anything else. That's it. It's taking Pizzatola. Sure you had it going on. I was going to say it. I just can't end the show just cleanly like that. That's not like us. That's not a big Jimmy. Please come back. He's on the Hogan Johns podcast. Go watch that. This is what we do here. We have fun. Find out about our lives. Learn more about each other. We get into our feelings. We love we laugh we fight. Boom bots.
