This is an I Heart podcast. Guaranteed human. Hey guys, today's Oscar recap is brought to you by Boothmobiles. What's happening everybody? Uh, this is a special episode. Uh, one of our IRL weeklies, a little bit different today because we are talking about the Oscars last night. There are so many important moments to discuss and even to discuss where IRL is connected. Like we feel very strongly on this podcast about a couple of people that we're having an amazing moment last night at the Oscars. So we shall discuss. Do you remember actually when we interviewed Tiana Taylor Beck in 2023? You know, that was her, I think one of her first, like her kind of like her acting debut in a way, um, for a thousand and one, which is a great film. But you know, in our trailer, how you introduce her is actually you say future Academy award-winning Tiana Taylor. Yo, how are you putting that out there? I'm really like, you know what I mean? Manifesting things for people. It happens. There's a clip back in the day of me talking about people having babies together. It's like it happened like three times. So I was like, you guys can have a baby and then they had a baby. It was like three times I put that on somebody and it happened. Um, so yeah, she didn't win the Oscar, but she did get the nomination and she got all the glory of that moment. And, and there was just so much you could just tell. She's like rancid around in these amazing outfits in her glory. Like she is, I don't know. She's just in the space that she's worked so hard to be in. I think winning the award sure is nice, but I think it's beyond winning the award. It's just like filling up and being in the space that you're supposed to be in life. I feel like she's arrived in that space with or without an Oscar. She's arrived in the space that she's worked so hard to be. You could totally tell how happy, I mean, I don't think there was anyone more happy just to be at the Oscars than Tiana Taylor was, you know, her category came really early on in the Oscars last night. And when she, when she lost to Amy for weapons, that girl, the camera pants on her, I used to see Tiana jumping on my up and down. Oh my God. You thought, you thought for a second, like, did Tiana just win? That's her way of showing like she's just that's to me. That's exactly what I'm saying. It's like she's just happy to be in this moment. She's happy to be sitting next to Leo, happy to be in this class, happy to be making art that I'm sure she's super proud of. And, you know, sitting next to her mom who's been on this journey with her whole I mean, she gave her her journey, right? But like, I don't know, just the whole thing. See, and Michael B Jordan there with his mom, they was like a lot of love. And maybe it's just us, maybe we're biased a little bit. But like, I just felt like it just felt like a lot of love was present yesterday. Watching Michael B Jordan win that award sitting next to his mother. And he's been a working actor since he's a kid. And the fact that he said I could feel everybody's wanting me to do well. Like I felt that deep, like, because I feel that sometimes, like sometimes we'll do something and I'll meet people that be like, yo, or even with the pod. They'd be like, I love the pod so much. And I could feel that they wanted to do well, that they want me to do well. And that's such a great feeling. I can only imagine for him with like more than half the world rooting for him to have this moment, what that must feel like. And then he wins it and he's sitting next to his mom and then he goes to In-N-Out Burger after which was so. We didn't love him enough. Like just, the whole thing was just really nice to see. So yeah, it was a special moment. But one of the things I wanted to talk about, and we are going to play some clips to refer to some of these episodes that we're talking about. But one of the things that I loved seeing last night was, you know, there's a new category for casting director. There is watching the cinematographer for the woman who won for Senors. Yeah, or I'm watching her win. You know, it really, and a lot of people in their speeches referred to like filmmaking is not the star. It's not just Michael B. Jordan. Like Michael B. Jordan. Yes, he won an Oscar. That's amazing. God bless him. But if if Ryan didn't write that script, if his wife didn't produce it with him, if that cinematographer didn't make it look the way it looked, like it really is. And it really takes a village is what I'm saying. And to see some of those people in the village be acknowledged. That to me last night was super dope. I love seeing that. I love seeing the people that, you know, make the village. And so there was a lot of that going on last night. And totally. And by the way, congratulations to Ryan, because he did win for best screenplay. He didn't win the director award, but he will at some point. So Marty Scorsese. I don't know how many films before he got one. Ryan's going to get one. But I was glad that he won screenplay. And and then some of the post interviews. Man, the way he talks about his wife. Can we just. Before I get into what I have to say about that. Do we have any clip from his episode that refer to that at all? Yes, I got an amazing wife who's been with me, known me a long time. And it's always very honest with me. It's very smart. So I keep her around and let her in on everything I'm doing, you know, so she can kind of give me perspective when I'm drowning in stress. She can tell me, yeah, you should be worried or not. You trip me, you know, I'm saying lots to love about that clip. Number one, as a also a fellow workaholic, I understand the concept behind that. I love hearing that from him. But over just the way that he respects and honors his wife. And even when people try to give him credit for that, you know, sometimes I hate to see this, but like sometimes people will be like, oh, it's the way you talk about your wife. Like he's doing her a favor. You know what I'm saying? Like, oh, it's nice you let your wife produce the movie. And people don't say that. But there is a tone sometimes that people say something that makes I don't know, it like diminishes diminishes her importance. And he is always the first one to check that. He's like, oh, it's not a favor. Oh, no, I'm grateful to have her be part of this film. Oh, this film doesn't happen without her. You know, I love the way he checks people in terms of the tone in which people refer to his wife. I'll tell you a quick story about Zanzi. And y'all should just know, man, that this movie, you know, big credit to her and her and said about partner, man, but it wouldn't be what it was when I heard, man. And she did it all. Pregnant and postpartum, most of it. Like, like I've seen her. She was she was in every she was every post production meeting, man. Like, like, like holding it down and dealing with all types of stuff. You know, the only I could see. We took the film on a roll all over the world while she was out there here. Y'all saw her, man. That wasn't easy. And then we and it hasn't stopped. You know, I mean, all of this since, you know, our little baby is seven months old now. And she and she and as good as a producer she is, she even better mom. So to see her do all of this is crazy. But but but. I'm going to I'm going to just I'm going to just leave y'all one insight into her brilliance, man. Like, like we were dealing with some stuff at home and two family members were kind of at each other's throats about about about some things. And I did what I did. I vented for like 40 minutes to her about, you know, who did what and why. Why we got to do this to support who and and and she took a deep breath when I got done then in her in her crazy, zingy way. And she says, you know, sometimes it doesn't matter who's right. What matters is that people know that the other person cares about. And I and I had, you know, I'm a writer. I heard a lot of words. I listen to my words about time. I live with this woman for a long time. I never heard those words put together like that in that context. And I was I was like, God damn, man, you want to one. And I and I and I feel like one of one for bagging her young, young Sam. Oh, I'm sorry. Hey, hey, hey, hey. So so so look, yo. Hey, so I see all the comments. Everybody's like, I pray for us all to find this. Like, wow. So and then that's the dope thing about Ryan. It's like he pays attention to the detail of he's such a truth teller. Like, you know what I'm saying? That even like a false tone about his wife, he's going to check that fast. And I just appreciate that so much. And I think that's what makes him a phenomenal storyteller. Is this like the music's always going to be the bright music, the tone, the laugh, the way you ask the question about my wife. I'm like, we're going to get that right. Because, you know, sometimes it's in the little things how things are framed. And I just appreciate that about him so much. One of the reasons why not only is he one of my favorite filmmakers, but I just think he's super dope as a human being. I don't know his wife. I've never met her, but I'm like her number one fan. She just loved him as a couple. And it's just so nice to see that type of love, you know what I'm saying? That type of work relationship, too, by the way, because he'll tell you himself that that movie wasn't what it would have been, what it was without her on it. So that was really nice to see. And then also a quick little clip of Michael B. Jordan at In-N-Out Burger after the awards. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. пад пад пад пад пад пад пад пад пад пад пад пад пад пад пад пад I'm gonna take this out. I'm gonna take this out. I'm gonna take this out. I'm gonna take this out. I'm gonna take this out. I'm gonna take this out. I'm gonna take this out. I'm gonna take this out. I'm gonna take this out. I'm gonna take this out. I'm gonna take this out. I'm gonna take this out. I'm gonna take this out. I'm gonna take this out. I'm gonna take this out. I'm gonna take this out. I'm gonna take this out. I was weeping. Weeping. We're so emotional. What? What's wrong with us? Why are we so emo? But that's what I mean. Because it was actually, it was so much genuine love happening. Yeah, I don't know. It was just, yeah, I don't know. What do you think? Why? What are we going to say? I think you can relate when you put that much, when you really care and love about love your work that you do, you know how much it takes to make something good, to make something great. Yes. By the way, speaking of making things, I posted recently, you know, I posted a clip that I finally, that I shadowed my boy, Steve and Gabe, who drew him on the set of Man on Fire. So I posted this thing on Instagram that I have secretly been studying and filmmaking for the past, I don't know, four or five. I feel like since COVID, honestly, doing masterclasses, doing lessons, shadowing people, asking a lot of questions, doing research, reading books, all that. Now, Brittany, Brittany too, Brittany's been on this journey with me, the two of us. And so I shared a post of how I was able to follow Stephen in Mexico City on the set of Man on Fire, which is getting ready to come out, which I'm very excited to see. But I was there when he was directing an episode in Mexico City. Now, Stephen, who was an amazing filmmaker, also friends with not only his friends with Ryan, Ryan, I believe kind of put him on to Creed too, because, you know, Ryan did Creed one, Stephen did Creed two, while I believe Ryan was doing Black Panther. Anyway, I say that's all that to say. Ryan Hoogler went to USC. Stephen Cable Jr. went to USC. The person who won Best Documentary last night, USC Film Student. I don't know what we got to do. We don't know if there's like an online program or something, but whatever they're doing at the film school at USC, Bravo, because you churning them out over there. But yeah, film makes an interesting, beautiful, I don't know, craft. In and out after this Oscars, the in and out stock is up. A USC is being flooded with applicants for sure. That was happening. You know, as it should. Yeah, it was a great night. What else? Tiana Taylor. I know we talked about her not winning, but she she looked incredible. She had an amazing night. I'm certain I love seeing her there with her mom. As women in filmmaking for sure. Autumn winning Best Cinematography, being the first woman to ever win in that category. And what she tells all the women in the audience, she's like, if you're a woman. It was so good. That's so good. And I'm so glad that the because, you know, sometimes people call out to the audience and they're like, you'll put your hands together or whatever. And people don't oblige. You're like, yeah, whatever. But when they zoom out the camera to show everyone standing up, you're like, dang, that's how many women are part of this this industry and without their influence. Like they often and they often go unnoticed. They often usually behind even the even the woman who won for wardrobe. Best wardrobe. I was thinking about my friend Tiffany. Shout out to Tiff the stylist. You know, she'd been doing this for years for all types of shows and films and projects. And she she don't get that type of recognition, but she'd be right next to the people making films. And I was watching the woman who did win for wardrobe. I think it was for Frankenstein. Yeah, it was spectacular. Frankenstein wardrobe is spectacular. Yeah. So for that, for her or and for all, can you imagine my friend Tiffany, for all of the with the many, many women behind the scenes that have been working at this 1020, 30 years to finally be recognized as pretty. I mean, all that caused for waterworks. All that was very emotional yesterday. Well, I love seeing you 100 percent. I think overall overall theme for it is like a village. Well, yes, of course, that takes a village. But also doing things without rec recognition, like still maintaining motive, motivation throughout it without getting like, you know, that pat on the back because there's even after Oscar, after the award, when those women are still going to go back and, you know, do the same great level of work. Some and some people are there and they're never going to get it at all. So the Oscars is a nice but it is it. I'm going to be honest. Even normally you watch the Oscars and you see the big celebrity wins the best actor, best supporting actor, best whatever. And everybody's like, those are the moments. I don't feel like those were the moments this year. I feel like the moment for the people that were behind the camera, the people that don't agree with the moments that I got most emotional when she when all of who's been a cinematographer for, I don't know, how many years makes the whole all the women in the room stand up or the woman, like I said, who won Best Wardrobe or just any of those moments like or the agents. I feel like there was a moment with with with agents and just all the casting directors, yeah, and a casting director who, you know, people spend their whole life hours, lose sleep, lose like and build a craft, a valuable craft that sits quietly kind of in the shadows while these big productions are made. And then the actor goes and gets the spotlight and gets the awards. But it's it's the people behind the scenes. It's the village. And to me, that those moments last night were the most special moments at the Oscars. Those are the ones that got me a little watery. I more than anything. And then of course, Ryan is amazing. I'll forever cry for them. But yeah, I hope we see more of that. I think that was super dope. And the theme of it takes a village, but it's also like what God has for you. Like that timeline is way above you. Like he's already whoever up there, whatever you believe in, that already hasn't figured out. Like you're taking a Tiana who has been working since she was a teenager, a baby. She goes from music artists to quitting music to picking up a camera herself and creating directing all the way to now. And, you know, now she's getting that recognition. And then even a Michael B. Jordan, who started off when he was also a kid from going from the wire, right? Said now he finally. So popular for commercials and what they built together as a team is even that, even the friendship of these two men at the awards together, having that grand moment together after Fuglil Station, after Creed, after Black Panther to be here during sinners. I mean, it's really like, come on, this is this is pretty spectacular stuff. And then and then for them to be real ones, let's be honest, you know, and I'm saying like, no, seriously, like, not it's not a small thing. And I think for me, that's half of more than half of the joy. Like it said, that's a real one right there. Man, look at that. That to me is the most inspiring part of it, because there have been people successful in Hollywood. There have been people who have broke boundaries and knocked doors down. And that's cool. But like to be a real one and do it to me is a different level of of success to maintain who you are, where you from, the people you came up with, your beliefs, your your vision, your art, your your storytelling is so pure and honest, and then you do it that way under those circumstances. That to me is like that's the most inspiring it could get. And so we're right in Cougar's concern. That's how that's that's what I feel happened. And Mike, too, like and Mike, too. He's so real that he won't even be on the the voting committee committee for the Oscars, because he's like, no, I don't want to. I would feel bad judging my my peers art. No, he trying to tell you he is a real one. We're going to start the Rancor with a club here at the end. What mean is I roll? Well, I guess. And by the way, guys, if you have not watched this episode, please go back. It was before centers. Was it right before centers? Why did it was way before centers, actually? We were working on centers, right? He was like working on it, writing it. But oh, yeah, he was doing the project with the back of a factory project. But it's just it's an insight into him as a human, like and as a creative. And I I really love that episode. And now granted, we could be biased because we are, like I said, we we we do fancy film and we aspire to be filmmakers and we're in that creative learning space right now. And so maybe we're a little biased, but I just think there's so much to learn about that the way he navigates through his world. And and he's just super dope. And like I said, a real one. So definitely worth an episode worth watching. You haven't caught it yet. Also, I highly recommend one of Brittany's favorite episodes ever on IRL podcast. Tiana Taylor, right? I want to miss being your favorite ones. It's definitely one of mine, too. More you whenever everybody asks you always refer to that one. Yeah, because I always appreciate it. Like if you want a glimpse of it, just watch the trailer on that on that Angie Martinez IRL page because you can go out with a girl. Let's go out with both their trailers on this episode. No, seriously, one that's like we take time on those trailers for the pod. We like after the episode, I'm like, what did we learn from them? What did we talk about? And then we make a trailer based on that. And so it's the it's the what we think is in the episode. And it's just a sample. The tiniest little sample ever. But I'll give you both of those on the end of this so you can do it. So you can check those episodes out. Anyway, there's also a new episode random, not Oscars related. Well, June Ambrose was at the Oscar party looking fabulous. The June Ambrose are past episode and there's some beautiful stories from June to about learning to deal with grief after losing her mom. She she shares the story about J&B. And we don't really get to hear a lot of intimate stories about J&B in the way she shared it that I thought was pretty great. Anyway, another episode for you to check out that just dropped. All right. So as promised, I'm going to leave you with these two trailers of two episodes that you can check out as it relates to the Oscars. But feel free to check out whatever episode you like. Just make sure you subscribe and tell a friend and I'll be back on Tuesday Wednesday with a new episode. So hopefully you'll check that out. Thank you to Boost Mobile. Thank you, Britt. And we'll catch you soon. It feels like a real moment. Does it feel like that for you? Yeah, it definitely feels like the moment. Future Academy Award winning Tiana Taylor. Us being strong woman is not by choice. You know what I'm saying? So it's just like to go to set 12 hours a day and be able to just like pour out and cry out loud. Every single we've watched you seen in the movie was real. What's on your mind? I feel like something's on your mind right now. You okay? Yeah. You just went somewhere. Oh, no. It's a weird thing. This is something I feel like we're talking about a lot of shit that I never really talk about, you know, being on the front end of things from 15. Nobody ever really got to see my struggle. This is Tiana Taylor in real life. I just be trying to survive, man, and be able to sleep at night. I grew up loving movies. Not knowing that I would eventually like discover a passion for making. You know what I'm saying? He was so intentioned, like so present. You know what I'm saying? And I don't know if that was just who he was or what he was dealing with. Hollywood is not competitive. No, it's a lie. Really? Yeah. Just powering and finding out what you love. Like I found what I loved in a roundabout way. I thank God I was like open to it. Hey, guys, thanks for watching. Make sure you subscribe, like, comment and check out all of the other episodes we have on H. Martinez IRL podcast. This is an I heart podcast. Guaranteed human.
