Summary

This episode of Killer Kin documents the horrific crimes of Eddie Lee Sexton, who ruled his family through fear, abuse, and ritualistic control, ultimately leading to the murders of his grandson and son-in-law in Florida. The case reveals how psychological manipulation, isolation, and threats kept victims silent until a daughter's courage to speak out triggered an investigation that exposed decades of incest, child abuse, and murder.

Insights
  • Abusers use multi-layered control mechanisms—religious authority, financial dependency, physical isolation, and threats—to maintain power over victims and prevent disclosure
  • Family systems built on fear and secrecy can escalate to extreme violence when external accountability mechanisms (law enforcement, social services) are evaded or delayed
  • Victims of prolonged abuse may recant testimony due to genuine fear for their lives, complicating prosecution and requiring specialized victim protection strategies
  • Accomplices in family abuse systems (like May Sexton) often become secondary abusers themselves, making them complicit rather than sympathetic figures
  • Early warning signs of severe family dysfunction—unexplained injuries, hygiene issues, behavioral changes—require mandatory reporting and follow-up investigation

Eddie Lee Sexton raised his children to worship a higher power, himself. He wanted to be a ruler in the biblical sense. They would hold these strange seances and kill animals. With the help of his wife, May, they commit the ultimate sins in the name of power. We have two parents that are incesting their children. Family bond, the whole thing is put together with fear. As the Sexton children grow up, they must choose between do or die. Suddenly, he feels something choking him like this. The depth of the destruction that this family perpetrated, it's inhuman. It's pure, dark evil. From the road, the home at 1280 Griffin Street is no different from the others on the block. The house actually was a nice-looking house, kind of perched on the top of a hill with a pond out front. The home seemed absolutely normal. Surrounding the house are flowers. There's a wind chime, children's toys, and then center in front of the house, you see a statue of Jesus. It was only on closer examination did you begin to find that this Jesus had no hand. There were some strange things going on there. Inside, a ghastly ritual unfolds. The only light that was in the house was candlelight that was put on the table. And on the table was a tome with a pentagram on it. Surrounding the table are children. With the children is an older woman. But no one's speaking. No one's talking. They're all just waiting. Waiting silently. Waiting for something to happen. Then, from the darkness, a man comes into the room. He was dressed in a black shroud. He just walked in with a tray. It wasn't a tray full of food. It was a cat on this tray. He lifts this innocent creature and then produces a knife. He took the cat and he killed it. And that was going to give him great power. The dark priest leads the children in a prayer to Satan. but the kids know that the real devil is standing right in front of them. Eddie Lee Sexton was born to preach. His daddy was a Baptist preacher. So Eddie grew up within a household where the tenants of the religion were taught to him. He figures he's going to join the family business. He actually had a little following in a small little kind of storefront church. But Eddie's path to the pulpit wasn't easy. Eddie was the seventh son in a family of ten children. The family scrimped and scrounged for everything they could get. Times were very, very tough in terms of just making a living, making a go of it. so his family was living in poverty. It left him very vulnerable, very frustrated because he felt like he didn't have control of his life. The wheels are set in motion for him to develop this striving, unquenchable thirst for power, even at such a young age. Eddie started acting out. He began exhibiting some of the classic signs of psychopaths. He hung some chickens along a clothesline and cut off their heads with a machete. He was doing this pretty much for fun. By the age of 20, Eddie was arrested for armed robbery and sentenced to five years in prison. Prison and the dynamics in prison taught Eddie what he needed to do to regain his sense of power and control. when he was released. Out of prison, Eddie used fraud as a means of support. He claimed that he had MS. He was drawing some form of workman's compensation. At one point, a total of the amount of government assistance he was receiving in the household was more than $50,000 a year. Before long, Eddie conned his way into the arms of Mae Carson. He told her that he was in the Army, but the Army was a cover story for the time that he'd spent in prison. In 1970, the couple married and immediately started a family. Eddie and May had 12 children. One was born every year. With a family by his side, Eddie found his faith. The fact that Eddie became a preacher probably has a lot less to do with any kind of religion or spirituality And more to do with getting people to put money in the basket The most loyal members of Eddie's flock were his wife and children Eddie Lee Sexton had his children, so he could always have his congregation He could always have control and power Eddie put up the appearance of a loving father and husband. But outside of the confines of his church, Eddie was a monster. He would threaten her and he would beat her. And so she slowly descended into this realm of a battered, controlled woman. May wasn't the only victim of Eddie's wrath. There were a couple of phrases that all the children always heard from Eddie Lee. One of them was, when you were younger than 16, you got the belt. When you were above 16, you got the fist. Kids were afraid to leave. The wife was afraid to leave. They were under a certain amount of control. Coming from a life that he had, a neglected child with no control, This was his accomplishment. For a time, satiated his needs. He ruled without any question. While Eddie had complete control of his family, he wanted more from his church. He wanted to be a ruler, as in the biblical sense, and he started to twist a lot of the scriptures. Eddie Lee Sexton was creating a false god. Over time, Eddie's followers turned from believers to doubters and shunned the preacher they once worshipped. When Eddie Lee loses his church, he still has the Church of Eddie, which is his family. And he decides that he's going to come up with some very unique ways of worshipping. Soon, Eddie's kids will be worshipping a devil of their father's making. He calls himself a warlock. Together, the Sextons will reach an unimaginable level of depravity. This case was essentially a bottomless pit of crime after crime and a journey into pure evil Eddie Lee Sexton's maniacal preaching drives his congregation away. The only remaining followers are his family. Eddie Lee Sexton was a monster that ruled his household and his family as though it was his own country. He's about to create his own brand of religion in which the road to salvation is fraught with sin. In the Church of Eddie, the power of fear outweighs the power of hope. You've got a little bit of Christian dogma. You've got a little bit of Satanism. It was a mix, and always with the purpose of controlling his family. Eddie's wife, May, doesn't dare question her husband. She becomes his number one disciple. A normal mother would protect her kids. They wouldn't expose their children to this monster, and May did. Eddie forces his family to participate in a series of bizarre rituals. He calls himself a warlock, and he starts these strange, satanic meetings, seances. How does a child feel to see a cat killed in front of them? The answer is very simple. I am going to keep my mouth shut because if I don't, I'm going to die. The entire family is trained to keep Eddie's dark side hidden from the outside world. You got to understand that within this house of secrets, he had to keep the kids under control in a sense of never telling anyone what was going on in the household. Eddie makes sure the children know they're always under his watchful eye. In the morning, as they went to school, he would line up all the kids and hand each one of them a quarter. Fear kept this family together. The family bond, the whole thing, is put together with fear. And fear is their father. In the world Eddie creates, everything is a secret. There was another ritual called the Saturday Night Dances. Eddie would sit in a big easy chair in the living room, watching his daughters dance. And the dancing was done in a sexual manner. And the girls were encouraged by their father to act seductive and to gyrate and to behave in a manner that was sexually alluring. that's the kind of father he was there was a method to Eddie Lee Sexton's madness he actually had a little ritual that he would do he would marry them in front of the whole family they would be dressed in a bridal veil and a ceremony would be done And after the ceremony was done, he would take them in the bedroom. And that's where the honeymoon started, where he would have sexual intercourse with his own daughters. And he wasn't alone. May sometimes participated in this act. This was something very sick and evil. No one in the family is safe from the parent's sexual sadism You have incest going on Not just with father and daughter But also with mother and son And Eddie also was incestuous with some of his sons He used the rape of his sons by himself To exert fear and power and control We see a man who feels that he has no consequences, that he is gluttonous in his lust, and whomever he wants, he will take. What you have here is an anomaly within a deviancy. This is taking the concept of family and putting it on steroids to the point that nobody exists but this family. While most of Eddie's children fear him, a special connection develops with his firstborn daughter, Pixie. Eddie winds up getting very attracted to her as she grows up. and they have intercourse a number of times. A lot of people in the family said that Pixie was in love with her father. You have sex with somebody, certain hormones create a bond, you know, after he's over the initial trauma. Pixie gives herself up to Eddie completely. He wants to control his daughter so much that he has two children with her. There's an element of breeding within his own family. He's trying to replicate himself over and over again. It's creepy. When people start to question who fathered Pixie's children, she knows what to say. Pixie concocts a story that it's boyfriends that are impregnating her. But her friends know different because she is raised in a very strict household where her daddy really doesn't let her date. But Eddie Lee is about to change the rules again. 17-year-old Joel Good didn't move to Canton, Ohio under the best circumstances. Joel's mom and dad both passed away when they were very young. And after that, he came and lived with my husband and I. Fitting into a new school isn't easy for Joel. He was pretty shy. And he just wasn't that popular. Joel manages to strike up a few friendships. Before long, he finds himself fawning over classmate Pixie Sexton. He came home and told me, you know, there was a girl that he kind of liked. Joel, who had never been on a date in his life, fell for Pixie, fell in love with her. He asks Pixie out to the prom. Can Pixie Sexton go? Of course not. She has to ask her father. When Pixie tells Eddie all about the new boy with a crush on her, she's surprised by his reaction. Ostensibly, you would think that Eddie would have discouraged this, but Eddie's always got an angle. Eddie Lee is going to make Joel part of his flock. In Eddie's eyes, Joel is just a pawn that he can use to play his sick, demented game. Prom night is Pixie and Joel's first official date. Eddie believes the boy can solve a potential problem. Eddie wanted to find someone to take attention away from himself. What he thought about was that Joel would be the person to cover up his incesting. On prom night I went over, you could really tell that Mr. Sexton had control over his family. As soon as he would say something, somebody would jump up and go and do it. almost like they were walking on eggshells. You definitely would get a feeling that there was something off there. After prom, the romance between Joel and Pixie picks up steam. He started going over there a lot. You know, after work and this and that, he'd be going over to Pixie's and seeing her. He was, like, really happy and everything, and I was really happy for him. Joel also becomes close with Pixie's brother, Willie. They all watched TV together they watched movies and Willie and Joel really hit it off They were like two simple guys and Joel really valued Willie friendship Before long, Pixie reveals that she's a teen mom. Joel doesn't question her story. He didn't care. He wanted to have this relationship with Pixie. He was in love. The love affair flourishes, but Eddie, as always, is pulling the strings. Pixie may have loved Joel in the beginning. However, her true love in her mind was her father, Eddie. And her loyalty was to her father and not Joel. To Eddie, Joel was an insurance policy against charges of incest. Joel proves the perfect decoy for Pixie But for the next several years Eddie can't stop the rumors that swirl around the other children They came into school with black and blue marks They had hygiene problems They had aggression All these signs were pointing to child abuse When pushed for answers Not a single sexting kid reveals what goes on behind closed doors For now, Eddie's secret is safe. As the Department of Social Services began to investigate the house, I do. Pixie married Joel. And that was done under some pressure from Eddie Lee, who actually performed the ceremony. So that Pixie appeared to be married with these children and had a father for the children. Joel unwittingly falls right in line with Eddie's plan. After they were married, Joel decided that he was going to take on responsibility of her two children. He wanted to sign the birth certificate saying that he was the legal father. After the wedding, Pixie and Joel move into their own apartment in a neighboring town to keep up appearances. Eddie keeps a close eye on them, but it seems he's been focusing too much on the wrong daughter. 16-year-old Michelle Sexton demands to speak with her high school guidance counselor. Michelle decides to tell the authorities at school that her dad is abusing her sexually She saw her father kissing one of her younger sisters on the lips And she felt protective of her And she said, the same thing is going to happen to my little grade school sister As what happened to me That was the beginning of the unraveling of this whole macabre story. It's exactly what authorities have been waiting for to penetrate the family. Detective Stephen Reddy is assigned the case. She couldn't take it anymore. She finally said something. Then she was sorry that she said it because there'd be hell to pay at home. She was scared for her life, so she was placed in a program for abused women and kids. Police can't arrest Eddie based on her statement alone, but they have enough evidence to remove Eddie and several children from his home. The police got a pickup order to go remove the minor children from the household. So five of the children were removed from the household and put into temporary foster homes. He wasn't allowed to be around any more of the children until the investigation was complete. Eddie was shocked when Michelle came forward. All his life, he drummed into their brains that the family secret is more important than their own lives. For now, Eddie follows the court order. A judge rules he isn't allowed to leave the state of Ohio. But Eddie's already scheming a way to get everything back. You try to take Eddie Lee Sexton's kids away from him, he's going to do something about it. Michelle decides to go home for a few days. Her mother enticed her to come to visit her. This is while Eddie Lee was separated from the family. Michelle doesn't realize the homecoming is all a setup. She went to sleep and woke up in the middle of the night because she heard somebody downstairs. There was her father sitting in the dark with just the ember of his cigarette. Michelle Sexton comes face to face with her worst nightmare. She's thinking that the one person on the earth that's supposed to love them, take care of them, is going to not only hurt me, he's going to kill me. Eddie's there to make sure his daughter never utters another word about what he's done to the family Eddie Lee says if you say a word I don't care where I am I don't care if I'm in prison I don't care if I'm on the moon I'll come back and I will get you I can only imagine that the fear was so horrific She was paralyzed. She was just a child. And she knew that her life was in jeopardy. The next morning, Michelle returns to the safe house and calls police to say she will not be testifying after all. She recanted because she was scared. Eddie Lee Sexton was an evil son of a bitch. The police were beside themselves, but they were not going to let this go by the wayside. They were going to continue to try to find something against this man to get him off the streets. Michelle refused to go home back to her family. She was taken care of by a very wonderful Christian woman who felt sorry for her. Even though Michelle retracts her statement, the minors remain in foster care. And Eddie must still keep away from his family until a full investigation is completed. Fearing it will be only a matter of time before police have enough to charge him, Eddie, May, and their teenage sons, Willie, Christopher, and Charles, leave town. Eddie packed up the children that were left at the residence, but they took off. The older children stayed because they didn't know any other way. They didn't know another life that existed outside of their home. The move is a violation of Eddie's court order to stay in Ohio. He's now a fugitive. I wanted to get Eddie Lee Sexton at all costs, but they were off the radar. They end up down in Florida where his brother Dave lives. They move into one of the many parks that are in the Tampa area, and everything seems to be going pretty good. Back in Ohio in January 1993, Joel and Pixie welcome their first child, baby boy Skipper, then join the Sextons in Florida. When they arrive, father and daughter rekindle their forbidden affair. Her loyalty was to her father. It was not to Joel. There was never any sense that Pixie had feelings for Joel. He was just there as a prop to serve her father's needs. Pixie's willing to do anything to remain in his good graces. The baby, little Skipper Lee, developed some kind of sickness and couldn't keep any food down and was crying a lot. Eddie was concerned about the baby crying annoying the neighbors the neighbors complaining the park police coming down and they would be found out Eddie Lee grows angrier by the minute. Eddie Lee Saxton said, either quiet that baby or I will come back and do it. Pixie, at that point, is certainly desperate, but she has to make a decision. She's in bed with Joel. The baby is near her. And Pixie takes her hand, puts it over the child's mouth, and pinches the child's nose like this. She waits until the child stops breathing. Joel never wakes from his slumber. The next morning, they find Skipper Lee is blue and he's dead. And Joel goes bonkers. with grief. He can't believe this happened. When Eddie learns of the baby's death, he quickly offers an explanation. Eddie Lee says, oh, it's sudden infant death syndrome, SIDS. Eddie Lee has always got it covered. And so he convinces Joel of this. Eddie Lee says we're going to bury Skipper Lee in the woods. Joel is, oh my God, he was bereft. Why do I have to bury my child here? First and foremost, Eddie Lee wants it done. And second, a dead body? Cops are going to be all over them. After burying his son's body, Joel takes a stand for the first time. Joel was really fed up, And he said he was leaving for Ohio. They were afraid that he would give them up. The Sextons are about to hatch a plan to make sure Joel sees the light. Eddie said the only way that boy's ever going back to Ohio is in a body locker. The family stays at the campsite while Willie and Joel disappear into the woods. Joel's walking And he's just walking in the woods Doesn't see anything And suddenly He feels Something choking him like this under his father's orders willie sexton lures joel good into the woods the plan was that joel was going to be taken out he had no clue what was going to happen next Joel goes down onto his knees and William goes tighter and tighter and tighter. Willie realized I've killed my friend and tried to give him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to bring him back. And then suddenly, Eddie Lee Sexton walked into the picture. Willie did his father's bidding, because that's all he knew. With Joel out of the way, Eddie believes his family is free from danger. But he's completely unaware that back in Ohio, police have received a tip, putting them on the family's trail. Detective Stephen Reddy learns from a Sexton relative named Orville that Eddie is in Florida. Steve Reddy, in his dogged pursuit of trying to find out where the Sextons were, had kind of shaken down Orville and threatened to arrest him and played a real tough cop with him. I'm conversing with Orville about where Eddie is, and he said that he had his phone bill and I could come and get it. The detective has the number traced. I contacted the FBI and the agent said that the number came back to a state park in Hillsborough County. FBI agents begin staking out the Sexton's trailer. The thought was to get them all alone, hopefully outside the trailer, They waited until Estella Mae and Eddie Lee went to go get some juice and some milk and arrested him. Agents have no idea about the murders of the infant Skipper Lee or his father, Joel Good. There was no sense that any murder had been committed or that anybody had died. They were just trying to get him back to face justice for some of the things that he had done to those children. Eddie Lee and May are taken to the Hillsborough County Jail, while the children are sent back to Ohio to stay with family. When Eddie Lee is arrested, he denies that he ever abused his kids. And he's not facing a lot of time. But what he doesn't count on is what's happening back in Ohio. With his mother and father locked behind bars, their son Charles contacts Detective Reddy about what occurred while they were in Florida. I told him, I said, if you're lying, you're going to be a very miserable person. And he assured me he wasn't. To prove his claim, Charles agrees to take police to the location of the bodies in Florida. On January 27, 1994, after a long day of searching, Investigators unearth the remains of baby Skipper Lee and Joel Good. They arrested Pixie and Willie Sexton. Pixie said that her father had ordered quiet the child. She didn't intend to kill the child. And Willie confessed to murdering Joel just directly. He didn't even put up her resistance. But police want Eddie to pay for his role in the murders. Pixie and Willie agreed to testify against their parents in exchange for lesser sentences. Willie gets 25 years for killing Joel. Pixie gets six years for her son's death. We wasn't happy that deals had to be made. like Pixie not being charged with Joel's death and only manslaughter for the baby. Mae Sexton is convicted for raping her children and sentenced to life in prison. Eddie Lee Sexton is convicted for the aggravated murder of Joel Good and given the death penalty. Given the severity of his sentence, prosecutors don't pursue additional charges against Eddie for sexually abusing his children. Eddie never stepped foot back in the state of Ohio. Now, for me, that was a big letdown. It's absolutely horrifying what happened to these kids. To me, it's not finished because of not trying Eddie. But that's life. That's the way it goes, and you have to move on. I never forget. I never stop missing Joel. But life does go on. You have to live your life. But there are days that he's very present and in the forefront of my mind. To this day, the Sexton family and their crimes remain an enigma. A combination of incest, child abuse, murder, all in one package. It's extremely unusual. I've never seen anything like this in American criminal history.
