Summary

Easton Allen analyzes the fashion choices in Gilmore Girls Season 2, Episode 7 'Like Mother, Like Daughter,' focusing on the red color palette throughout the episode and a pivotal fashion show scene at the Independence Inn. The episode explores how Lorelai and Emily's styles intersect, particularly through matching outfits and the introduction of various designer pieces worn by characters.

Insights
  • Color coordination in costume design serves as visual storytelling—the red spectrum connecting Lorelai, Rory, and Luke's outfits in the cold open establishes thematic cohesion before dialogue
  • Character wardrobe choices reveal personality and social aspirations—Lorelai's formal lavender tuxedo shirt signals her attempt to navigate elite spaces despite discomfort with them
  • Fashion show scenes within narrative television provide natural opportunities to showcase multiple designer pieces and establish character relationships through matching or contrasting styles
  • Vintage and designer pieces from TV shows have significant resale value and collectibility—specific items can be tracked and sourced through secondary markets years after original air date
  • Costume design choices that seem 'baffling' are often intentional character development tools rather than mistakes, reflecting the character's authentic personality and decision-making process

Welcome to Stars Hollow Style. It is the podcast about Gilmore Girls' clothes. Hi, everyone, my name is Easton Allen. This is part of the I Am All In family, the I Am All In Vast Network of Podcasts that we do here at I Heart Radio. And it is so much fun going back and exploring Gilmore Girls from episode one all the way to the end, all the way through the Netflix revival, everything. And we are examining every single last particle and spec of this show and my role here. What we're going to do together is look at the clothes of Gilmore Girls. That's what we're doing. This is so fun. We're at season two, episode seven, like mother, like daughter. If you want to pull it up on your Netflix app and follow along, please feel inclined to do so. Please feel welcome and invited. Here's what we're going to do. We're going to go through this episode and talk about the clothes that jumped out at me, a fashion expert, a fashion icon, Easton Allen and we're going to talk about what they're wearing, maybe what it represents, maybe where you can get something similar if you want. And then at the end we're going to talk about our favorites and our least favorites and then we're going to say goodbye and never to speak again just kidding just for a week. But this is a lot of fun and I hope you are enjoying the show along with me so let's get into it let's not waste any time let's talk to Gilmore Girls Here ok like mother like daughter is the episode costume designer Robin Louis West And this episode, if you remember, it has a fashion show in it. So that is pretty dang exciting for a fashion centric podcast. Oh, my God, I can't wait. This cold open. We're seeing red at this cold open. OK, I thought this is very interesting what they dressed Lorelai and Rory and Luke in for this scene. There Lorelai and Rory go to Luke Steiner and their outfits are kind of a combination of the spectrum of red. Rory's wearing like a very dark red cardigan with an embroidered flower detail on the right hand side, whereas Lorelai is wearing a pink like ombre long sleeve shirt. It's like very hot pink at the top. And then it kind of dissolves into a darker pink near the end of her sleeves. And of course, because it's Lorelai, she's got a rhinestone. She has rhinestone details around the pockets in the collar. Every single item she wears has to have at least four or five rhinestones. That is a law that is that is in the stars hollow town charter that Lorelai Gilmore has to be no more than four centimeters away from a rhinestone at any given moment. This is a I think this is a nice shirt, though. I think it's very fun. And then what really ties us together, though, in this scene is that is Luke. They're Luke Steiner. You see him come over and he's wearing a flannel shirt. I'm shocked, but he's wearing a flannel shirt. It's made up of red and like light pink plaid. And it looks like it's like a perfect combination of Rory and Lorelai's outfit. So it looks like if you kind of put them in a blender together, you would get Luke's flannel. I thought it was really interesting and really exciting to see this level of cohesion right off the bat on the episode. I thought that was really fun. And if you've seen this episode before, which I know you have, it ends on a red moment, too. So call me Taylor Swift. This is this is red. We're in our red era. So the next scene as I get ready for the day, Lorelai has transitioned into a more pastel pink. She's wearing a pink button up blouse with what looks like it looks like an embroidered flower pattern on it. But a closer look, it is not embroidered. It's like a screen. It's printed, but it looks it's like a style that looks like embroidery, looks like big thick embroidered, honestly. But it is not is printed onto the shirt. It's nice. It's cute. You know, we kind of are back and forth on what Lorelai wears to work. I thought this was a nice shirt. I thought it was kind of nice and springy and I enjoyed it. However, when Lorelai goes to meet with the headmaster at Chilton, she brings out a shirt we have seen from her before. She has this like lavender tuxedo ruffly shirt. It's a feminine tuxedo shirt. It's got like four ruffled stripes down it. And we've seen it from her in season one. It's she's worn versions of this before. Lorelai, this is a formal shirt for Lorelai. I mean, she's going to meet the headmaster of her daughter's school. It's a very important school. At this point, she's really aiming to go to Harvard. So this is a big deal. Lorelai is dressing for the occasion and wearing her ruffly tuxedo shirt. There's something I would not wear, but Lorelai sees this as a formal attire. So that is what she's wearing. At least it doesn't have a graphic on it. That's all we can hope for here. It looks fine, I guess. But, you know, it also like reminds me of like the wedding singer or or dumb and dumber or something. It just evokes a certain feeling when you see a shirt that's like lavender or powder blue in that spectrum. And then you pair it with the ruffles. I just think it's kind of kind of weird, but that's Lorelai for you. She's wacky. Then we go to the Lorelai's parents' house. They're having I think this is a Friday night dinner. I couldn't really I assumed it was. But then Richard wasn't there. So I didn't know what to if this was just they're hanging out midweek or something. But we'll just say it's Friday night dinner. They go to Emily's house and they're barbecuing. Head out back. We're barbecuing. Lorelai is wearing a sleeveless purple top and Emily has this bronze and black paisley jacket. I thought that was kind of nice and cool and different for Emily. She's usually wearing those St. John suits buttoned all the way up. This is an unbuttoned jacket. And again, it's paisley, something that Lorelai also loves to wear. So I enjoyed seeing I like in this episode, it's called like mother like daughter. I like seeing how their styles kind of interact and and mesh. And you can see the origin of the love for paisley here on Emily's jacket. Next, we have to talk about this booster meeting. Oh, my God. A cornerstone Lorelai fashion moment. This booster meeting. You need to prepare yourself. I need to prepare myself. And while we do that, I'm going to let another voice tell you about some very fine products and services. One second. No gloss, no filter, just stories, spoken without fear. My name is Easton Allen. We are talking about season two, episode seven, like mother like daughter. A great episode for fashion was so much to chew on here, so much to get into. Let's go back to what we were talking about before those lovely commercials. The booster meeting. Lorelai wants to join the the boosters for Chilton in a way to curry some favor for her daughter trying to get her into the extracurriculars and also raise her social status. That's something Lorelai is very interested in doing. This scene. It begs the question. We talk about this a lot. How does Lorelai get dressed in the morning? How does she make these decisions? How does she pick out what she's going to wear? I mean, some of the choices she makes so baffling, just beyond baffling. And again, I know that's the point. I know that that's what they're trying to tell you about the character. But even knowing that in suspending that disbelief, I'm just like, what on earth are you wearing this shirt? She's wearing in this scene. It's no one says anything about it, but it's a it's a black long sleeve shirt with printed Chinese characters on the sleeves. It looks like Tiger Lily's and then a a Buddha looking character in the center with the English words fortune boy printed on the bottom. I found this deeply offensive. And I just I know it was a different time. I just feel like it's not OK for Lorelai to wear this shirt. It really is not. I really found it offensive. However, I was able to identify this shirt. It is Cousteau Barcelona, Cousteau Cousteau. I'm I still am not sure how to pronounce that Cousteau Barcelona. These shirts pop up pretty frequently. One of them just sold on Depop for seventy five dollars. So if I won't judge you, but if for some reason you want to wear this shirt, too, maybe you want it for just a collection of weird things. People have worn on TV shows, but if you want this, just search eBay, search Depop, get on Vintage, maybe in search fortune boy Cousteau. Custio Barcelona, you will find this shirt. I promise you they do pop up. Anyway, also in this scene, I want to point out the appearance of the character Eva played by Brenda Strong. Brenda Strong was the narrator on Despera Housewives. She was Sue Ellen Mischke in Seinfeld. She is extremely cool. She's a great actor. She's just the best. I had the pleasure of interviewing her on another iteration of this podcast. We used to do called I smell pop culture. I interviewed her about this very scene. And it was one of my favorite interviews we did in the entire run of those. So I implore you to go back and listen to that if you are interested in the character of Eva or Brenda Strong as an actor. She's so cool and has so many incredible stories. And she's just worked with every great director known to man. And I really enjoy talking to her that day. So I invite you to give that a listen at some point, too. Anyway, but she is she's wearing a normal outfit in this scene. She's just wearing like a gray suit, like a great like jacket and a skirt. And she looks great. Not like Lorelai's Fortune Boy, I'm sorry to say. So anyway, but I'm just so excited to get to this next scene. I'm so pumped because we've been doing this show Stars Hollow Style for a while now. I mean, we're in season two, Episode Seven. We're working our way through the show. This is the first time we've had a real fashion show on our hands. We're talking about clothes and they're having a fashion show on the on the show itself. This is so great. Makes my job super easy. So let's become let's sit on the runway here. Let's let's become the the announcer. I don't know if I've ever been to a fashion show myself. I don't know if they have those, but they do now. This is a this is a Stars Hollow fashion show for the Chilton boosters being held at the Independence Inn. First up is Eva. She leads the pack. She's walking on the runway wearing a black sleeveless halter neck dress with a sparkly rose pattern. And let me say it looks stunning. I love this dress on Eva. I thought what a great way to open the show. She looks so glamorous. The dress is awesome. I just love it. And then after her, we have some unnamed booster members walking the runway. First up in a zebra style jacket, then another in a silver tweed suit with horizontal stripes looks like it's fine. And then the St. John comes out. Another booster member walks the runway wearing a St. John green tweed checkered jacket and skirt combo. I thought this was very nice. I imagine Emily was backstage thirsting over this this combo. She wanted to wear it herself. She loves St. John. I found this exact suit on a Thai consignment site a site based in Thailand. I am not going to link it to you because it I don't I don't think it's real. I feel like this is a scam. So I'm not going to to link it, but I did see it on the internet. So, you know, if you search St. John green tweed checkered jacket, you will find the suit that this booster member is wearing. It's really nice. It's a really nice, interesting St. John normally they're solid colors. So seeing a pattern on this, I thought was very cool and very exciting. And there probably are more out there for you to get if that's something you want to do. And then finally, we have Lorelai and Emily as the mother daughter combo. They're wearing matching red jackets with black accents, tying together the red spectrum from earlier in the episode. I don't think they're wearing St. John, but it is clearly inspired by that style with the big buttons and the way it's the silhouette is very St. John to me. And I thought this is just a nice moment when Emily says to Lorelai, how interesting you're embracing the world that you ran away from. And they're wearing the exact same thing. And Lorelai is is truly becoming parts of her former life. Now we're back to pajama watch. There's a lot of pajama talk on this show and we are back to it. Rory is going to get kidnapped by the puffs in the middle of the night to do a prank, a hazing prank, which does not turn out well for her. And Lorelai tips are off so that she's wearing cute pajamas, which is nice because Paris does not get that same. She's not afforded that same warning, but Rory's pajamas are very cute. They're like cake dessert pajamas. They've got like they've got cakes. They've got cupcakes. They've got like batter. It's a it's a it's a very cute pajama set. This one's made by Nick and Nora, which Lorelai or sorry, Rory has worn before. Rory's worn the maybe these exact pajamas. They look familiar. I know she's worn at least one other set of Nick and Nora pajamas. They don't make these anymore. The Nick and Nora is not in production. However, they do appear on eBay from time to time. I found a similar set on eBay that was the macaroon style or sorry, on Poshmark. I found those on Poshmark. They were Nick and Nora macaroon pajamas, not the dessert slash cake ones. So I'm sorry. They're not the exact ones, but but Nick and Nora pajamas go up on Poshmark on Depop on eBay pretty frequently. These ones, these macaroon ones were 25 bucks. So if you can find them, they're going to be used. Used pajamas feels weird to me, but who am I to judge? Anyway, those are our outfits for this episode. That is the fashion show. It has concluded the runway is now dark. Let's go through and talk about our favorite fits, our favorite looks. I mean, we'll start with our least favorite. How about that? Let's build to the good stuff at the end. My least favorite outfit of this episode has to be Lorelai's fortune boy shirt. My God. Just baffling. I don't know. Why would you wear this? Why in on any reality would you wear this shirt? Horrible, especially when you're meeting like people you want to impress. Like what on earth? Lorelai, what's going on? Did you look in the mirror? Did you think this was cool? Did you think this was get the job done? Ugh, can't stand it. Anyway, my favorite outfit. Let's see. Let me think here. You know, I got to say, my favorite outfit was was what Ava wore at the fashion show that that long sleeveless halter neck dress. I loved it. I really did. I watched that moment over and over over. I just kept rewinding it. I really like that dress. That was great. Brenda Strong is a stunning actor and she wears that dress so well. She's she's so tall. She's so tall and just she looks like a model and it's crazy because she's such a such a skilled actor, too. She's got so many talents and she looked great in the dress. I loved it. Anyway, let us know what you liked over on her Instagram at I am all in podcast. I would love to hear it. I read all those. I stay up at night just staring at the at the Instagram trying to figure out where what's going on. So please engage with us there. And we will do this again next week. We're doing something really fun next week, and I'm not going to tell you what it is in case it doesn't happen, but get excited for something next week. It's going to be fun. And we're talking about season two, episode eight, the ins and outs of ins. So watch that beforehand. Study up. Look at the clothes. Don't listen to the dialogue. Don't watch the acting. Look at the clothes. That's what we do here. So until next time, I'm Easton Allen and you look great today. Don't you forget that. Hey, everybody, don't forget.
