Summary

Dan Patrick and guests analyze Super Bowl 60, discussing Drake May's performance and the Patriots' challenging schedule ahead, the NBA's expansion plans for Vegas and Seattle, and the controversial Pistons-Hornets brawl. The episode features interviews with Mike Golic Sr. and Reggie Miller covering quarterback class redrafts, playoff implications, and All-Star Game format changes.

Insights
  • Super Bowl halftime shows have become the dominant cultural memory of championship games, potentially overshadowing on-field performance in long-term recollection
  • Defensive dominance and ball control (not passing yards) are the true indicators of Super Bowl success; Seattle's defensive scheme and run game control proved decisive
  • Quarterback stock fluctuates dramatically post-season; Drake May's MVP-caliber regular season followed by playoff struggles demonstrates the volatility of QB evaluation
  • NBA expansion to Vegas and Seattle is inevitable, but player safety concerns differ between cities; Miami presents greater off-court risks than Vegas for visiting players
  • The 2024 QB class redraft would likely remain unchanged despite performance variance, suggesting initial draft positioning was sound despite year-two struggles

This is an I Heart podcast. Guaranteed human. You are listening to the Dan Patrick show on Fox Sports Radio. It's hour one on this Tuesday, Dan and the Danettes, Dan Patrick show. My starting lineup, a guy who failed his driving test twice. The minister of humor. Wow. That's where we're going to start the show. I did not know that about you. Seventy five seconds in. I know, but I did not know that. And you dropped that on me this morning and you were kind of recounting what happened and you blame the driving instructor. Yeah, there was something about a K turn and then there was something about not stopping completely for the stop sign. Next thing I know, all my friends are celebrating, passing it on their first time. But on that third one, I got my certificate. I was ready to roll. Seaton's here, Marvin's here, Pauli yours truly. And the back room guys as well. We'll talk to Reggie Miller a little bit later on. The NBA talking about expansion and it's no surprise. This summer they'll talk about Seattle and Las Vegas. Mike Golic senior will join us. I'm going to ask him 15 years from now. What is the one thing we talk about Super Bowl 60? And I don't think it'll be about the football itself. I think it'll be about the halftime show. H7, 7, 3DP show. Email address dpatdanpatrick.com Twitter handle at DPShow. Those of you who thought that the Patriots were imposters because they had a really easy schedule to make it to the Super Bowl. Well, you'll be happy to know New England schedule is out and it's not pretty. It'll be tough if they get back to the Super Bowl. Nobody's going to complain about this schedule. But keep in mind they had a last place schedule. They didn't choose their schedule. They had four wins. The NFL wants parity and they give you they, I would say, reward. If you want to use that word is a schedule that's a little more user friendly. But that's how the league works. Style points, irrelevant results or everything. And the beauty of the NFL is there's always a reckoning. There's going to be a new one next year or a couple. But New England has a first place schedule and there's no favors here. No shortcuts. They got the Bills, Lyons, Seahawks, Packers and Chargers. If they're for real, then they're going to prove it next year. But you start to look at the games that are on the road for the Patriots next year. They're at Buffalo, at Chicago, at Detroit, at Kansas City, at the Chargers, at the Dolphins, at the Jets, at the Jags, at the Seahawks. This will not be easy. And this is a situation where you might even see New England not even make the playoffs next year. Sometimes that rise, that fall is just as dramatic. All right, Seton, poll question. I also have Seattle's schedule here. Now, it doesn't tell you which which weeks, but it does say that they will be at Arizona, at Denver, at the Raiders, at the Rams, at the Eagles, at the Niners, at the Commanders, at the Panthers. So it doesn't stand out as, wow, that's going to be some tough sledding for the Patriots. Yes, especially the road games. All right, poll question for hour one is going to be what, Seton? Plus, you do have that sort of Super Bowl hangover effect that is a is a real thing. You lose the Super Bowl. You usually don't do as well the next year. Yeah, and you wonder what the hangover is going to be. Sometimes we'll look at a team that wins the Super Bowl and talk about the hangover. I really think the hangover is for the Patriots because you got Drake May. I don't know if he's going to have surgery on his shoulder. You got an offensive line that needs short up and you got to get some skill positioned players and you have a tougher schedule now. But you got a great head coach. And, you know, the the fluctuation, if I look at the quarterbacks who were taken when Drake May was taken and we talked about Jaden Daniels and Caleb Williams and Bonix and Michael Pennings and JJ McCarthy, they're like stocks because we're going that guy is way up here. He's NVIDIA. And then all of a sudden, Jaden Daniels comes back to earth. And then there's a little bit of Caleb Williams going up there. Hey, Bonix is doing something. Oh, J.J. McCarthy got to playing a game. And then you had, you know, what was going on in New England with Drake May. And if I said, let's redraft right now, that class, if you were going to redraft that class, Caleb Williams going one, Jaden Daniels. I don't know how healthy he's going to be. I don't know how healthy he's going to be throughout his career because of his size and the way he plays. Drake may almost won the MVP. Bonix stays healthy. I think he's playing in the Super Bowl. JJ McCarthy, jury's out. Michael Pennings, it's going to be his team. Jury's still out. But if you said, let's draft, redraft, I'm probably taking Caleb Williams, but I'm taking Caleb Williams because I think that he has the right person, Ben Johnson in his ear. Now, if you say I'm going to end up with Drake, Mayor, Jaden Daniels or Bonix. Okay, those are nice consolation prices. But you start to look at this and we want to go, that guy's going to be great. So Jaden Daniels, maybe the greatest rookie season we've had for a quarterback. Caleb Williams up and down. Drake may, I don't know where. Uh, Bonix, maybe the most experienced him and Jaden Daniels. JJ McCarthy, not a big fan. Uh, Michael Pennings, I like the story, but I wouldn't have gone up in the draft to go get him. So you come down to probably four quarterbacks. And I don't know if it seems like a foregone conclusion. Drake may would be the guy because he came a couple of votes away from winning the MVP. But after the Super Bowl and after the playoffs, I would say that stock has cooled down considerably. I would say it probably be Caleb Williams, definitely. Then Drake may Jaden Daniels, Bonix and JJ McCarthy and Michael Pennings. Good luck with that. Yes. It's weird. I feel exactly the same way. I don't really have a huge problem with that draft order still today. Even if it played out exactly the same and Drake may goes third instead of second or I totally get it. It's all steals seems right to me. Yeah, Paulie. Yeah, it is weird though, because if this were doing the show in August, it'd be Jaden Daniels. And then there'd be a big drop to those other guys. Yeah. Big drop. Yeah. But it's weird to be the runner up for the MVP and having people question you going into next season. Usually it's man, that guy's building on something. And I would say there's probably a lot more doubters than when the postseason started or even the Super Bowl. But that can fade away depending on what kind of season you have next year. But now you have a schedule that's far more demanding. And now we're going to find out maybe who Drake may is and who the Patriots are, at least in the short term. But they do have money. They have, you know, draft picks here. And once again, you got a great coach. The question is, you got to start to fill in some blanks here that were very, very wide open in the Super Bowl. But I do think we'll look back on this Super Bowl 15 years from now. And it won't be about one particular play, not about one particular person, unless it's about. Drake may, because I think this will be about the uproar of the halftime show. Bad Bunny. I do. I think that's what it's going to be because the game was not transfixing. The game didn't give you something where like even today, normally the Tuesday after the Super Bowl, we talk about things that we didn't get to on Monday. But there isn't anything on Tuesday that we didn't get to on Monday. Yes, Seaton. So are you saying that in 10 years from now, the question will be who won the Bad Bunny Super Bowl? It may be. It might be. It might be. But, you know, just so much attention to the halftime show. And it almost took away from the Super Bowl because we kept waiting for storylines. When we were in San Francisco, it's like, what is the storyline here? You know, the big storyline became Tom Brady. He didn't have a dog in the fight. And all of a sudden it's like we spent two days on Tom Brady. You know, Drake May in the shoulder. I am feeling great. See, that's one of those where it's tricky. And this is something the NFL does not want to talk about. And I talked to somebody yesterday at the NFL Home Office and I said, you know, Drake May told everybody that his shoulder was fine. And he goes, I know where you're going with this. I said, hey, there's billions of dollars, billions of dollars gambled on the Super Bowl legally and illegally. You got to make sure that we know exactly what's going on. You have to be transparent. Now, you don't want to tell Seattle, hey, this shoulder is really bad. But you're in business and you've got to be transparent with those. How many, you know, people were we're betting on the Patriots. Not knowing if, I mean, what if it comes out? Drake May has torn out a torn labrum or something or, you know, something maybe not as serious. But you get shot up before the Super Bowl. And, you know, the person I spoke to at the Home Office said, it's not going to be a topic of conversation. I said, OK, I'm just I'm just bringing it up because it's billions of dollars that were bet. And I don't know if that hampered Drake May at all. But, you know, if you're saying your shoulder is fine and you're on the injury list, but then you keep telling everybody you feel great. I know you want to do that. But as a gambler, shouldn't we know as much as maybe the Seahawks know? Maybe they're not going to be that transparent. But I do think this is where we blur the lines with the amount of money that's gambled. And it goes down a really, really dark rabbit hole here. Yeah, Pauli. One more thing I just found for you. You mentioned how do Super Bowl teams that lost do the following season? In the past 10 years, four of the 10 Super Losers did not make the playoffs. Historically, 68 percent Super Bowl losers do make the playoffs the following season. So it's right on par there about 60 percent in the past 10 years. Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if they don't make the playoffs. The past two years, the Chiefs did not make the playoffs and the Niners the year before. They didn't make the playoffs after they lost. Yeah. And there'll be three or four teams that come out of nowhere and there'll be three or four teams that disappear. It happens every single year. Alrighty, we'll come up with a poll question and we will get to phone calls as well. 877 3DP show. There was a brawl that broke out with the Pistons Hornets game last night. And this is how it sounded. J.D. on the dribble. All right, back down on Diabatte and a whistle. They're going, uh-oh, uh-oh. Diabatte is swinging. Boy, Diabatte is, he's facing suspension here. There is no question about it. And now Bridges throws a punch. Now Stude just came out. Oh man, that's a bounty bro. There they go. After review, fighting fouls have been assessed for the following players. Diabatte and Bridges from Charlotte and Durin and Stewart from Detroit. Those four players have been ejected from the game. That's courtesy of the Pistons Radio Network. According to the NBA rulebook, during fights or altercations, players who aren't subbed in must stay on the sidelines in the immediate vicinity of their bench. The league also stipulates that violators will be subject to an automatic one game suspension without paying and an additional fine of $50,000. Uh, because punches were made, contact was made, suspensions will be happening for a couple of these players. I would do the following if I was the NBA and maybe they do this. I don't know. I would show the Rudy Tom Donovitch punch that Kermit Washington nearly killed Rudy Tom Donovitch and I would show that to every team at the start of the season just to remind them. You never worry about the person in front of you. It's the person to the side or behind you. And that's when you get some real damage done. You know, most basketball fights are kind of skirmishes, pushing, shoving, but when punches are thrown, man, I'd have no tolerance whatsoever. I'd sit you down for a week and I'd let you think about it and I'd make you watch that Rudy Tom Donovitch documentary every day just so you don't do something stupid and throw away your career. It's going to cost you a couple hundred thousand dollars and I know you want to protect your teammates. Now, I don't know if I would have taken the Duncan Robinson route where he was kind of on the outside and he just kind of turned around and he just said, what are we doing here? You know, you can act like you're helping. You're in the mix there a little bit. Yes, Marvin. You have to. Even. All right. So I've been in a friend group that's gotten into a fight before. You can't come on guys. No, you have you. I know you're in it. I know. You are in it. I know. You don't want to be in it, but you are in it. Or at least you have to pretend you have to try to break it up. Like, come on, guys, let's not let's not do this. Well, I don't know if that's how your voice is going to sound. Come on, fellows. Hey, guys, come on. Stop it. Now, that old school basketball, that happened a lot. I don't want to go back to old school basketball to see that. I have no problem with an enforcer. You know, it's weird hockey. You fight and you go to the bench for five minutes and you're good. All right, you're going to fight. You go over there. All right, now come on back out. NBA, that ain't the case. And I go back to that San Antonio Spurs Phoenix Suns. What was that conference final? And that's when I went toe to toe with Commissioner Stern, because you had some guys from the Phoenix Suns trying to protect Steve Nash when he got, you know, banged into the scores table and you had a Mari Stoddermeyer and some players go off the bench and that caused the Phoenix Suns chance to go to the NBA finals. You got to do it. You got to protect the integrity of the game, the players. But when you start throwing haymakers here, man, I never would ever worry about the guy in front of me. It's the guy that I don't see. And that's, that's when things happen. That's when things go south. All right. My goal, like senior in an hour, Reggie Miller, a little bit later on as well. Kansas drops number one Arizona. And that was without Kansas best player, Darren Patterson, who wasn't playing by all accounts, feels like NBA scouts still think he is the number one player in America, but he's been in and out of the lineup and had flu like symptoms. But at Fallgallen and if you ever get a chance to have that atmosphere as I went there and saw Jason Kidd and Cal play, I flew out on my own dime because I wanted to see a game at Fallgallen and it did not disappoint. That was a great, great atmosphere. We're going to take a break here. Back after this Dan Patrick show. Clint Kubiak has their new head coach and I go back to when I was listening to Tom Brady do the Seahawks playoff game. And when he was talking about Clint Kubiak and I came in the next morning with these guys, I said, Brady's going to hire the offensive coordinator for Seattle. And Fritz, he's like, how do you know that? I said, he kept calling. He said, my guy. And I go, oh my God, he's right in front of us. He's going to be the head coach of the Raiders and they officially swore him in. He is my Golic senior. He is cohost of Golic and Golic on Fanduil Sports Network. And you can listen to him every single day imparting wisdom. Right, Mike? Yeah, yeah, that's it. Yeah, we'll go with that. OK, 15 years from now, when I say what do you remember about Super Bowl 60, you will say what? Defense, just like I say about when Tampa Bay. One years ago, Baltimore, one eight years ago, the Bears in 85, even though they had Walter Payton and Jim McMahon, those teams were led by defense. This one was led by defense. I'm going to remember as bad bunny. Ha, ha. So so I watched that. I was out there for the week, obviously with my son, Michael, I do the show with. And we're he's 36. I'm 63, so we're obviously have different tastes in music. And I, I, I, as I said, this, this is not going to make me become a bad bunny fan. I'm not going to download his music. It's nothing I've ever listened to. But I thought it was entertaining. Yeah, you know, it's we watched it. We were at the stadium pregame and then we went back to the hotel for the game. Half times is a made for TV event. It's not for the people in the stadium. And I thought, even though I didn't understand any of the words, I thought it was a was a good show. Again, that's the that's the most I'll ever listen to bad bunny. But I thought it was produced well. Yeah, but I wonder, you know, when people say, well, I didn't understand it. He's, you know, singing in Spanish. And if Pavarotti would have been the half time guest, would people say, hey, can you sing in English there? Well, that's what I had said, too. People go to opera all the time. They don't understand the language. Even even some of the songs that are in English, we don't understand the words. We know the chorus to them, but we don't understand the words. So I listen, we know this all got politicized. I watch it for the show value. I get it from the NFL side. You've conquered the United States. You know, here you have somebody who's one of the biggest entertainers in the world and you're trying to go international with your sport. I get it. And without getting into the political side of anything, I just looked at it for the sheer entertainment and the reasons the NFL brought him in. Yeah, I agree. And I'm not really familiar. I'm familiar with, you know, who he is, but not not his music. Like he, you know, he, but he's selling out wherever he goes. Yeah. You know, to large stadium crowds. So I have great respect for that. You know, the Drake may fall out usually after the Super Bowl. You know, one of the two teams seems to have a little bit of a drop the following season. I'm looking at the Patriots schedule. They got a first place schedule now. They're going to be on the road. So nobody's going to say they backed in if they make it back to the playoffs and or the Super Bowl. But what concerns would you have with what we saw with sort of Drake may CJ Stroud kind of, wait a minute, where did this come from? You know, concerns going into next season. Well, I mean, listen, Drake may you have to see what the next and you're right to bring up CJ Stroud, you know, because we saw him have such an excellent rookie year and then struggle for the next couple of years. I still think Drake may will be fine. He's got to hold on to the ball better for sure. Offensive line member. He had two rookies at left guard and left tackle. And when Will Campbell Campbell came back from injury, he just wasn't wasn't the same guy. They have an excellent defense. The defense played well in the Super Bowl without question. And I think there's a reason I think New England, you know, how they do the two early prediction for in the odds for next year's Super Bowl. I think New England was like 10th. Seattle was first, LA was second. The Rams were second. And I think I think New England was 10th. And I think a lot of that is they're going to have a much harder schedule this year. But I was trying to understand what Josh McDaniels was doing or not doing. If I know the left side of my line, Mike is, you know, porous. Why don't I have somebody over there just helping out? If I'm going to throw, let me give Drake may time to throw. Listen, I agree. I absolutely agree. And quite honestly, the biggest issue I have with the game plan is they didn't run the ball more. Yeah, they have a two headed monster on Ramon de Stevenson and Travion Henderson. They combined ran it 13 times. And this was a nine nothing game at halftime. It's not like New England was out of this game. I'm surprised they abandoned the run. You keep hammer the run, hammer the run. You may gain a yard, two yards, three yards. Then you pop one for 15. Then you gain a couple. Then you pop one for 20. I was somewhat amazed that they gave up on that when they did knowing you're going to pass more and then putting your, your, your, you know, your left side of the line, the rookies on an island, both Jared Wilson and Will Campbell. I thought New England could steal this when it was only nine to nothing. And it should have been 20 to nothing. Just the way Seattle was playing. And I thought, just, just get something, get some momentum. And they never got any rhythm whatsoever. Now, all of a sudden, I mean, when you think about it, Drake may have the most passing yards in one quarter in the history of the Super Bowl and had a bad game. Oh yeah. I mean, listen, at that point, Seattle was giving them everything they could underneath and they were getting some yards after the catch in that really padded Drake may stats because neither, neither quarterback was great. This game, I mean, Sam Darnell completed 50% of his passes at some point in this game, Dan, the New England offense had to be on the sideline in between series going, okay, this Seattle team is, is showing us things that they hadn't shown. Devin Witherspoon blitz more times in this game than he did in any game all season as, as New England was trying to figure out not to get too far into the weeds, you send a guy in motion or a back in motion or a receiver in motion to try and figure out is the defense playing zone or playing man. If a guy follows a guy, it's a lot of times it's man, blah, blah, blah, blah. Well, Seattle would follow a guy, make it look like man and then play zone. I mean, they, they just did a great job. Mike McDonald did a great, great job in disguising defenses, bringing blitzers. I think Devin Witherspoon should have been the MVP. Again, I'm not pounding the table that Walker wanted. He had an excellent game. So I, it's not like I'm losing my mind on it, but I think I would have gone with the defensive player, but New England just had to be sitting on the sidelines going, A, they're just better than us right now. We need to figure something out and they never figured anything out. Talking to my Golic senior co-host of Golic and Golic on Fandals Sports Network. Give me the fan base that had to be thinking we should be there. Oh boy. Um, probably the Rams, even though it was Seattle that beat them. I'm sure Buffalo fans thought this was our chance, right? This was our chance to get here with no Kansas City. But doesn't this come down to Zach Charbonnet with that two point conversion that gave them home field advantage? Like if, if they lose that game to the Rams, Seattle's then on the road, I believe for three consecutive games. So that memory just picks up the ball and yeah. And yes. So, I mean, that might be the biggest play of the entire season. It is amazing and kind of a kind of a fluky play because there is the, the, the bill parcels. That's why you run all them sprints and lift all them weights for certain plays to have an effect on the year. And that play did, right? It makes you go from being on the road to being at home. Now, not saying that Seattle couldn't have won on the road. They did very well on the road this year, extremely well on the road. So they, they could have done it as well. But I think everybody believes the next team up or and really that NFC championship game was really kind of the Super Bowl and that had the best two teams. It, I would love to have watched the game with Josh Allen. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, you know, their, their run defense just wasn't good enough this year. That, that, that is a glaring, glaring weakness. When you're talking about it in the playoffs, when you can run the ball and play really good defense, well, they couldn't stop the run very well. And that's, that's going to hurt you. That's going to get the ball controlled on you. Uh, but I think though you asked about a fan base, I think that fan base was like, man, this was our chance and we blew it. Yeah. And I, it always goes back to, and I feel like I, I'm on repeat when we get to the Super Bowl or after the Super Bowl, you play great defense, run the football and don't turn, turn the ball over. Right. I mean, that's, that's it. You, I'll take my chances. Everybody talks about, you know, we're going to throw the ball and you got to have these big splash plays. And I go, if I can control the clock, keep your defense on the field. My defense is going to put pressure on you and we don't have turnovers. And that's exactly what happened. They held the ball for over seven minutes more than New England. Defense played great. And Sam Darnold had 14 interceptions and six lost fumbles, I believe in the regular season, 20 turnovers and had a goose egg in the postseason, zero turnover. So that plays right into the perfect formula. I'll leave you with this. If we redrafted that quarterback class, which rate may Caleb, Jayden Daniels 2024. I don't think it would be much different because remember, Jayden Daniels had an excellent rookie year and he had an injury filled second year. Caleb Williams, I mean, had a rough first year, but look what he's done his second year, helped drop the sacks by getting rid of the ball, making hella plays outside of the of the pocket. I don't really think it would have changed much. Well, bonus, bonus would have gone ahead of Penix and McCarthy. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yes. Without question, McCarthy and Penix would have been, would have, would have dropped out, we would have dropped lower in the first round, if the first round at all, especially I had my son and I, we definitely had question marks about JJ McCarthy coming in from Michigan. But yes, bonus absolutely would have been the fourth quarterback taken. Good to talk to you as always. Have a good off season. If there is an off season for you. We know there isn't. Thank you, Mike. You got it, Mike. Goalic senior cohost of goalie can go with Mike, Jr. on Fandall Sports Network. Dave in Ohio. Hey, Dave, what's on your mind today? Hey, Dan, you got me? Yeah. You're a stopping ground Mason, Ohio 59 a bit soft to 189. The reason I was calling in, I know you're all about love and we need your and the Danettes help. I've just come to find out that next year's Super Bowl falls on Valentine's Day. Yeah. And the question I have married 41 years, if my Packers are in the Super Bowl, what should I do? Go to the Super Bowl. Okay. And the impact on my relationship or any advice for your other listeners out there on what to do? Well, if she loves you, then she'll love that you love your Packers. I mean, it, this isn't, I think we feel like Valentine's Day is only for the women. I guess for us too. Right? If you say so. It is. It is. Yeah, it is. It should be. It should be. Yes. And is, is you can split that heart right down the middle. Our birthdays aren't even for us anymore. What are you talking about? Yes, Todd. It's also a contrived holiday that gives restaurants a chance to do their price fixed menus and all kinds of things are insanely priced at the different place where you would go out to eat and chocolates and everything else. You got to go see your team in the Super Bowl. You could celebrate Valentine's Day the day before the week after whatever it is. If she loves you, then, you know, show, you know, you've, a lot of kind of set them free as Sting once saying, what was the, what were the lyrics that if you love somebody set them free? Yeah. Yeah. Set them free to go to LA for the Super Bowl. Yeah. Absolutely. Chad and Salt Lake. Hi Chad. What's on your mind? Well, first my wedding anniversary is February 13th and it starts by being smart and marrying smart. My wife is a diehard sports fan. She's already planning the trip to the Super Bowl. I like that. I like that. Your coverage, boys. Out kick your coverage. Thank you, Chad. And if you come to Los Angeles, hopefully you'll stop by the show. Yes, Paul. I think it was Vince Lombardi that said years ago, love comes second. Didn't he say that? Hmm. Think it was him? Hey, yeah. Yeah. A lot of, you know, great lines there. Love comes. Yeah. Love. Yeah. It's a shared holiday. And if your wife knows that you love the Packer, you go to the Super Bowl. I mean, bring her with you. Yes, Martin. In Valentine's Day is every year. The Packers going to the Super Bowl is not every year. That's true. That's true. Yeah. I think we need to take back Valentine's Day just a little bit here. I mean, quietly. Quietly. You first. Quietly. Yes. Let me know how it goes. Yeah. Report back to us. Well, I did say to my wife, I said, what are you getting me for Valentine's Day? And then she said, I hadn't thought about it yet. I said, well, I hadn't thought about you either. Even though I have, but I just wanted to let her know I return serve. And I'm like, okay, yeah. How's it feel? Yes, Tom. We also don't need all the Valentine's decorations as soon as the ball goes down. I mean, I'm not sure. All the Valentine's decorations. As soon as the ball goes down, it's already a month and a half. We're already doing all the hearts and all that garbage. Not garbage. Garbage. What do you? I don't like a month and a half of Valentine's things all over the pharmacies and the supermarkets and everywhere you go to the doctor's office. It's like, Todd, you'll use anything for love on any day, especially a holiday. That is fair. You'll be the cheesiest guy out there. Get it where you can get it. And if it has to be only on February 14th, it's so weird. You're very transparent with your end game here. I am. You are. Yeah. I'll get the chocolates and the flowers and the jewelry. I'm like everybody else. You do that thing. And then you keep your fingers crossed and see how the night ends. And just make sure that you don't put your son and daughter on your text mail. Yes. I did have that faux pas during Super Bowl week, something that was just meant for my wife was on a cane next. Thankfully, it wasn't that inappropriate, but it was. I was. Hinting it something. No, no, it was it. It hinted. Thankfully, Mario showed me how quickly how to delete. I wouldn't have no idea. Like once you send it, I thought it's out there forever. No, you can delete it. You can take it back or something. Oh, when Fritzi goes, oh, I can't believe what I did. And, you know, when he says that, I'm rarely surprised. But this one, I was surprised because he sent a sexy message text to his wife. That included his son and daughter. It was ill advised. It was the kind of thing that I would not want to have kids on that note for any reason at all. Yes, Mark. I don't know if it was sexy. It was just inappropriate. Well, you were there with him. I was. We were in the car and then he gets a call and it was his wife. It'd go great. Yeah. I know you're showing off to your friends there in the car, but like that. Why did you send that? Why did you? I shouldn't have. I was in a playful mood with the guest book. We were at the San Jose Sharks and I was just feeling myself and I wasn't really thinking clearly and I was just in a silly mood. How about we take a break? More phone calls coming up. Update the poll results. Reggie Miller will join us next hour. The NBA is talking about expansion and no surprise. They're talking about Vegas and Seattle. We'll talk to Reggie about that. We're back after this. Dan Patrick show. Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in the nation. Catch all of our shows at Fox Sports Radio.com and within the I hard radio app search F S R to listen live. And I'm watching the pregame festivities with the Super Bowl. Seeing who's down there. Hobb, nob and there. Good buddy. Adam Sandler was there. Lot of celebrities. And I look over and I go, there's a guy in San Francisco who looks just like Reggie Miller. Well, what were you doing? We were there on the request, which was very honored of the merger because we were promoting All Star weekend on our legendary February that we are currently in with, as you just mentioned, the Olympics for two weeks, the Super Bowl and All Star game all on the Peacock and NBC. So we were there. Carmelo Anthony and Jamal Crawford and myself got a chance to do a pregame hit with Maria Taylor and Jason Garrett and the whole studio guys from the football side of things. And it was my first Super Bowl experience. I've never, ever been to a Super Bowl before. Didn't know what to expect. I have seen you many of times at the Super Bowl and working it. So I wanted to know what it was all about. And I was, I was a kid in a candy store. It was, it was a pretty awesome experience. Did you walk up to anybody outside the basketball world? We did. So we went on the field after our hit and had a chance to actually see the guys. Our hit was at about 1150, 1155. So the buses had just gotten to Levi Stadium and the players were just kind of coming out. And where our green room was was in close proximity to the Seattle locker room. So Cooper Cup came out and the few, what's Jackson in Jigba? Yeah. Came on out and took pictures with us and we watched them warm up. We didn't get a chance to see any of the Patriots because they were at the far end of the other side, but again, just to see and see them without pads, like, you know, they weren't, they were just out there for their pre pre pre warm up. So no pads, just shorts and it was kind of cool. All right, let me get to last night. This is how it sounded with the pistons and the hornets. J.D. on the dribble. All right, back down to Diabatte and a whistle. They're gone now. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. And Diabatte is boy. Diabatte is he's facing suspension here. There is no question about it. And now Bridges throws a punch. Now Stu just came out. Oh, man, it's a bounty. Brooke, there they go. After review, fighting fouls have been assessed to the following players. Diabatte and Bridges from Charlotte and during and Stuart from Detroit. Those four players have been ejected from the game. Your thoughts seeing that, Reg. Well, I'm not condoning violence at all. But it's been a while since we've seen a good old. No, we don't need to see that. We don't know. No, we don't need to see that. But it shows me that, you know, because everyone wants to talk about this generation and everyone's buddy, buddy and can we all just get along? And there was a little animosity between a team that is arguably one of the hottest in the league right now in the Charlotte Hornets, right? Winners of nine straight, I believe, and the number one team in the Easter conference in Detroit. And it's funny how something so little, I mean, because the foul really wasn't anything, in my opinion, which leads me to believe there was a lot of talk that was leading up to that. Or there were some elbows before, something they don't show. But the foul was nothing. It's what happened afterwards. I expect multiple games from Stewart. Number one, he left the bench and he threw hands. I think if you leave the bench automatically, that's three games, two or three games, something like that. But on top of, you know, throwing your hands, I think he's going to get a couple more games on top of that. Durham, you know, the mush to Diabatte's face. Bridges through some punches, I believe that connected as well. So we'll see multiple suspensions, high fines, and then we move on. I just worry about not the guy in front of me. I worry about the guy to the side of me or behind me who's going to take a cheap shot. And it happens, right? And that's why you got to have your head on a swivel, because when something like that breaks out and all are going to just go back, you know, to the mallets and the pallets versus the Pistons. What made that a little bit more unique and different is because of the fan aspect of it. When the fans started to come onto the court, when we entered the stands as well, because you didn't know where players, where fans were going to come from and just having your head on a swivel because you never know where a punch is coming. If a chair is being thrown at you, if you're going to potentially be maced, which Ron and I were almost maced by one of the officers on the floor, you just never knew what was going to happen when you get into a situation like that. But you had a suit on, didn't you? You weren't playing. I had broken my finger in training camp. And this was one of the early games in our season. So I was in a suit. And once everything happened between Ben Wallace and Ron, if you remember, Ron went over to the scores table and was laying down and I'm kind of like, you know, talking to him, trying to calm him down. And I think he and I have discussed this before. I have the corner of my eye. I see it. I see it traveling in, in 3D slow motion. The cup. And as soon as it hits Ron, he turned into the incredible Hulk. And just that's when he went into the stands and I had to go. I had to go after him because Lord knows I didn't know what he was going to do. And I went in there, Steven Jackson went over there. I believe David Harrison on our team was over there in the stands. Rashid Wallace for the Pistons were over. It was just like they say, Malice in the palace. It definitely was a, a malice. And did you get fined? Fine and suspended because I left the court of play and went into the stands, even being a peacemaker. I believe I got two games that I built. I think because I was out, that was part of, I like time served. But yeah, I was suspended because I left the court and went into the stands, even as a peacemaker to get Ron back on the court. That was my main thing was to get Ron out of the stands and back on the court. Lo and behold, did I know once we were back on the court, things because the fans being on the court now, things got a little bit more escalated, especially with the police officer running up with Vareta Tomasas on the court. And then my main objective was to get him to the locker room. But you know, when we look back on that, I don't think we look at what led up to that. Like didn't Ben Wallace play a role in this, that we look at the crowd in Detroit versus the Pacers and really the role that the Pistons played in the mallets at the palace. And how things have changed in terms of fan safety and player safety as well. If you go to games now and you see when the players run out of tunnels now, they're running out like shielded now because now they have cover because of what happened to us as we were leaving the court with all the beer, popcorn, everything being thrown at us. And look, at the end of the day, we as a team probably should never show them went into the stands as the pedestrians or, you know, the people watching the game never should have came onto the court. It was just a mess all the way around. What I didn't like was them trying to frame it as we were a bunch of thugs. And I didn't appreciate that. Um, that, you know, that was coming from the league because if you listen to the game and I believe Bill Walton was on that call, he was livid by the fan behavior. By the time we had left Detroit and landed back in Indiana, it was all about us. And I knew the gun coming down. It was all the players fault, the players fault, the players fault, as opposed to it really being 50-50. But I will say this, we should have known better. It cost us, I thought that was one of our best chances to win a championship because we had just signed Steven Jackson. He was gone for like 25, 30 games. Germain was gone for 25, 30 games. And Ron, our test was lost for the rest of the season. And, um, remember they were the defending champs. And what led up to that was the history and the playoffs the year before being that close to moving on to the finals. And remember they beat the Lakers. We felt that that could have been us. And then we smacked them in our first matchup, the defending champs versus us and the rivalry. And we were trying to send a message, Dan. And we all saw what happened after that. Is Reggie Miller the Hall of Famer NBC Sports lead analyst? NBC has the All-Star Game for the first time since 2002. NBA All-Star Saturday, five Eastern on NBC and Peacock. The All-Star Game tips off Sunday, five Eastern on NBC, Peacock and Telemundo. What do you expect with this new format with the All-Star Game? Well, before the injuries to Yanis, to SGA, um, and to a certain degree, uh, and this is not a, I'm sure not a popular, I think a lot of people were leaning towards the world winning this. Yeah. Um, with, you know, I'll add Luca to that. Luca hasn't played the last few games, uh, for the Lakers with a, with a leg injury. So we don't know what his availability is. Uh, Stephen Curry just recently, yesterday is out of the All-Star Game because of a knee injury. I liked the format because I think we've been kind of trending this way. Just look at the last seven or eight MVPs. They all have been international players. The last American born MVP was James Harden, I believe in 2019. So, uh, I liked the format. I'm still leaning towards Team World with Wimby, uh, Shane Goon, Jamal Murray, uh, Yolkic, um, if Yolkic plays like Yolkic, recent All-Star Games, he really hasn't played hard, but if he plays hard and I like the two teams, stars and strikes. We've got a younger team, uh, of the K cutting hands of the world, Tyrese Maxi. And we have an older team that was LeBron James, Kevin Durant, would have been Stephen Curry, um, Donovan Mitchell and those players. So it'll be interesting. I like the format. Um, but I also like Team World. I know that's not very popular, but we'll, we'll see. He'll all be settled on Sunday. The off season here with LeBron, you know, there's, where there's smoke, there's fire, and it just feels like this Cleveland reunion is not going away. Now it might be because we're keeping it in the forefront here, but I'm just trying to add logic to this. And that is if I'm LeBron and I'm looking at the Lakers, we're not winning anything. I would have a chance to at least get to the NBA finals if I went to the Cavaliers. I'm not going anywhere with the Lakers. Right. If the, now does, how important is it for him to go out at home in Los Angeles or to go back to home home and wrap this up? I think if he goes back, back to Cleveland where he won that championship, um, is it going to be taking a hometown discount as well? Cause now they just added James Harden in his salary. You've got Donovan Mitchell on a max salary. Mobley is going to be up. Jared Allen, your best chance to win a championship, especially to go back home to Cleveland and be in the East. East is up for grabs out West. You've got four or five teams led by the champs in O K C that you know are going to be there right now. Detroit is leading the East up by five over New York and six, I believe, over the Boston Celtics, but the East will be getting some strength back with possibly Tatum coming back this year, but we know he'll be back next year for Boston. Halliburton, Indiana will be better now that they've gotten Zubac in that big trade. So the Pacers will be better. But Cleveland to me, I mean, they had the second best record in the league a year ago and maybe they need that leadership. Maybe it is James Harden. Maybe it is LeBron, but the only way this is going to go away if LeBron James makes it go away. So I think it's staying out there because the hype machine of LeBron is keeping it out there as well. Oh, you think you think I don't think no, I don't think him personally, but his camps or, you know, maybe Rich fall made. I mean, there's a lot that comes with being LeBron and maybe that is keeping this. Oh, he's going back. He possibly possibly could be going back to Cleveland. That hype machine is keeping it out there. Not LeBron himself, but the hype machine behind LeBron could be keeping it out there. Yeah. See, that's a tough one that you're the third option with Austin Reeves now in Luca, you know, what option would you think he would be if he went back to Cleveland? Well, that's what I was going to say. He would be third option there too. Would he be the third option behind Mitchell and hard and behind James Harden? Yes, he would. Well, well, hard and you know what? He might, he might be the fourth behind Evan Mobley. He would be the fourth option if he went back to Cleveland, but do have that experience in the lineup? And the problem is if you do that, Jalen Tyson, an up and coming player who's in their starting line now, to me, it will probably stunt his growth because he'll move to the bench to make way for LeBron. But again, we're getting ahead of ourselves right now. He's on the Lakers. Let's focus on what he can do for the Lakers and what they can do to, you know, maybe upset some teams in the Western Conference, but we're getting ahead of ourselves either theory or NBA talking about expansion with Vegas. Vegas is a foregone conclusion. I think so. Okay. I think Seattle is a foregone conclusion. Okay. It would never should have left Seattle in the first place. It is a great fan base as we just witnessed on Super Bowl Sunday, how they travel and how they've been for their football team, having a chance to play GP and those great Nate McMillan, Dale Ellis and some of those great Seattle teams. It was unbearable to come into that building and play against those guys. And that fan base is just absolutely, they would be on fire to be back in the league. So I think those two teams are, it's a foregone conclusion. Now, the owners will vote on that and we'll have two new teams. More dangerous city for NBA players, Vegas or Miami? Well, depends on what you like because I think, I think both have their sinful their sinful advantages. Um, did you ever have the Miami flu? I never had the Miami flu. Never ever. Okay. But I came close. You were lucky. You were in one of the least dangerous in Indianapolis. Yes, that helped. But Vegas, oh my goodness. Yeah, but you know what? There's been a body of work of other teams that have been there and that have been a successful the ACE is not the Raiders been successful, but teams that have been there, they've got a lot. I'm talking about those who visit, not those who live there. It's like the people who live there don't live on the strip. So you're more worried about the visiting. Then the home team. Oh, yes. Yes. The home team will be out outside the city. I look, I think so many people have gone to Las Vegas during the off season during summer league. I think it'll to me, I'll, so now I'll answer your question after thinking about it. To me, Miami is much more dangerous. Okay. Did you ever, ever get in trouble in Utah? Never. In fact, I think I'm in a top in Mormon. I, I, that's all good. I've been in Utah. Have fun at the All-Star game. Good to talk to you. All right. Thank you, Theodore. Thank you, Danny. It's good to see you back. Reggie, Aloysius Miller, Jr. the third, he'll be on the call. So it's Reggie Carmelo, Vince Carter, Tracy McGrady, Noah Eagle, Jamal Crawford. That's a starting lineup right there. And it's on NBC for the first time since 2002. NBC has the All-Star Saturday. That's five Eastern. The All-Star game itself, five Eastern on Sunday. This is an I Heart podcast. Guaranteed human.
