I liked it a lot. Parenthood edition, yes. Your voice is lovely. Oh my God, it is not. You don't understand how many times my child tells me to stop singing. Oh no, that's not good. You're a lovely child. Mama, mama, no more. No more, mama. You're such a lovely child. No more, mama. No more, mama. Like politely. Well, you can sing here. We think you sound great. Politely be quiet. Oh my God. Wait, before we start, please just say what you just said. Okay, so we jump on the Zoom and I go, oh my God, oh my God, oh my God. She goes, oh my God, oh my God, like that. And then I looked deeper, like closer to my phone and it said, Laura Graham is following you. Shout out Laura Graham, we love you. Whoever you are, you are fantastic. Laura Graham, but she thought it was. It was the Lauren Graham. I got really, really excited. I'm still excited for the follow up, Laura. Did you know I was today years old, today years old when I learned that Erica Christensen and Sam Jager-Jager are last name Graham on Parenthood? I had no idea. Yeah. I've never known their last name. Yeah, I don't know that. Joel and Julia Graham, I did not remember that. Yeah, I remember that. Noopy did not know that. I wonder if they did that based off of Lauren. Are there any Holtz? What do you mean, are there any Holtz? Like, is there any writer or director with a lot of Holtz? I don't know. Because Nile and me. I do not know, all great questions. Okay, this is a great episode. As an overview, this is really fun. I was super excited they were going to Bakersfield, road trip, but I have a few flags on the play. Yeah, there's many flags. I'll synopsize first and then we'll chat. But seeking his mother's approval, Zeke demands the entire family caravan on a road trip where they encounter many roadblocks along the way. While spending time on the road, Adam connects with Hattie. Sarah confronts an embarrassing issue with Drew. And Julia learns to appreciate Crosby's odd personality. Meanwhile, Christina struggles to enforce a harsh punishment she gave to Max for acting out. So a lot to talk about, but my first thing is, I don't know what Bakersfield these people were going to, but there are no hills like that in Bakersfield. There are no hills. Bakersfield is the flattest flat in California. And these people were going to the Grand Canyon. Like I was like, where are they going? It's not Bakersfield. So question for you, how long does it take to get from the Bay to Bakersfield? A Berkeley to Bakersfield on the five would be say four, four and a half hours? Okay, that makes sense because this road trip felt long, but from LA where I live, it's only a two hour drive. Right, but there in Berkeley, but still, no, they still, look, it was realistic that they stopped for lunch, but they just are not going to Bakersfield. They're literally going to Bakersfield by way of the Grand Canyon. Like it's so weird. Or they're like literally just going, it's not, it's just very strange. And they're like in hills and looking at beautiful views. Like that's not at all. What are you trying to say? The road from Berkeley to Bakersfield is the five, it's flat, there's nothing to look at. There's nowhere to stop. Harris Ranch would be it. They are clearly going from LA through to Penga Canyon. Like do what I'm saying. They only went to Malibu, went through the canyon and filmed there. That's not anything Bakersfield-y. You know, I know this about you. You are a car road trip kind of gal. Love it, love it, love my car. So I just love driving. I hate road trips. Here's what I like. A four hour drive is great. When I start to have to do a seven, eight hour drive, it start to be like, oh, it's going along. But I don't mind driving. I like driving. Like two hours is like nothing to me. Like I'll go two hours, I'll drive an hour to get a burrito and drive back. It's fine. Oh my God. I hate driving. I hate it. Do you hate being a passenger? I hate it being a passenger too sometimes. Why do you hate it so much? I get really nauseous, carsick when I'm a passenger. Why don't you drive? I just, because I don't like driving. See, I don't like being the passenger. I rarely am a passenger. The other day my mom had to drive because I was falling asleep. I was just so tired. But otherwise I never a passenger. That was the first time I've been a passenger in probably years and years. Oh man. Well, this episode started with a bang, like literally. Yeah. When I first saw it happening, I'm like, oh, they're not having sex, but he thinks they're having sex. Like I didn't actually... Oh no, they were. No, I know they were, but I thought maybe like this whole episode, Drew was gonna think that they were having sex, but then come to find out later, like they weren't. That whole storyline is so funny, especially when Amber tells Sarah's Lorne Graham that he saw it. Oh my God. She was great. Mae Whitman was great when she did that. I was also happy that Drew, yeah, that Drew told Amber and didn't keep it to himself. All right, but I love that Amber was like to her mom, like, look, I'm enlightened and even I find this gross. Totally. I thought that was so good. The whole storyline was really good. And it was funny and it was well done throughout. I have to say every storyline was actually pretty great. Oh God. And then on that same thing when clearly Jason Redder, Mark, is like saying dirty stuff to Lorne Graham on the phone. And they're all just cringing like, oh God. Oh my God. Hey, hon, missed you last night. Two musketeers isn't the same. I hope you feel, no, thinking of, oh, she knows that. Okay, what I'm trying to say is, you've got this and we've got you. Whatever you want to say, let our skilled local florists help you say more. Interflora, say more. At AJ Bell, we believe investing is for everyone. And when we say everyone, we mean your dad, Dan, Danielle, Dean, Dave, Del, Del's delivery driver, Denise, Denise's dentist, Dinesh, and Devon's strongest man, Donathan. Donathan? Donathan, that can't be right. Donathan? Well, whatever your name is, if you're a real person, investing is for you too. AJ Bell, feel good investing. The value of your investments can go up or down. What do you think of Max's punishment? I'm taking a pivot. Okay, so I had somebody very wise tell me, when you go to punish your kid in the sense of like, oh, you're not, I'm taking this away or whatever, it's to take away items and not memories. So like somebody told me that. They're like, sure. When you go to punish a kid for, you know, in this sense or in this case, Max calling Christina a bitch, you take away the TV, you take away the phone, you take away the favorite toy, you take away this, but you don't take away the family trip or you don't take away the trip to the zoo. But what if your kid's supposed to go to a concert with their friends? I know, I know, I know. It's like way easier said than done, but I heard like, let them make the memories. You can't have a kid do something terrible and then go, oh yeah, have fun at Coachella, like you can't do that. I know it's way easier said than done, but I did, I did a pre, like when somebody told me that was like, that makes a lot of sense, but I do think it depends on what it is. It doesn't yet, it doesn't. Cause you can't have your teenager be like, you know, I stole the car. Well, I don't want to take a memory away. So please go to outside lamps. Do you know what I mean? Like you can't do that. You can take away the car. Right, right, right, right. But you can't just let them be like, oh, now you don't have a car. I totally get it. And I think good effort, I think that maybe works for young children. Right. That you don't say to the young child, oh, now you don't get to go to the birthday party. You just say, no, you don't get your, you know, screen time or whatever. Right. But I mean, look, I haven't obviously encountered this yet because my son doesn't know the B word, but it's like that is tough. I can only imagine like how that feels being on the other side of that. Yeah, parenting is hard. Right. So I mean, the only flag that I have on this is like Max literally was like, well, you told me we weren't gonna, it's gonna be just like last time where you told me that I couldn't go to the movie and we still went to the movie. Right, right. And it's like, oh Christina, you just kind of, you know, dig in. It's like almost that the punishment worked because then he cleaned his room, made the dinner first of all, the giant bowl of carrots was so legit. And then she decides to go. So I sort of thought, I liked how it kind of turned out, net it out. Again, easier said than done, but like I think you just, when you do it, you gotta stick to it. All right, you're not going on the trip. I would never be able to do that. Like never, never. I know, I'm gonna be such a piece of work when it comes to that. I'm gonna be like, it's okay, we can go. Go. But yeah, I get it. What did you think about Zeke being like mad that Adam didn't pour his foot down? That was kind of like, and then Adam's like, pulled my foot down. Like what? Yeah, but I think Adam also kind of shoved him and like shoved it back at him when he was like, you told me I need to set boundaries with my kids. Well, I am, I need to respect it. So I thought I was like, good job, Adam. The fact that the chair actually got stolen was so hilarious. It was so funny. By the way though, they've turned a four hour road trip into like a two day affair. Like they're at lunch and then they gotta get to the motel. Like grandma's house is like eight minutes from them. You know, like they really made it seem like Bakersfield was so far. Right. They should have just made it Phoenix or something. I don't know, but anyway. What did you think of Hattie and Adam's little heart to heart? Eventually it was cute. I also understood she was sort of just doing her thing in the car. Right. If you kind of overreacted. But I liked the whole, I liked it all. I liked it all. I liked them in that little gift shop and the whole thing. Yeah, it's good. I think a lot of parents who had kids go to high school or college like get that, get that. Like, oh, one day or soon you're not gonna, I'm not gonna see you every day. You know, when our dynamic is gonna change and it's gonna be really hard for me and yada yada. So I like that they acknowledge that. Is she now a senior? She's a senior now. She's a senior now. Yeah. Yeah, no, all the storylines are great. I love that Crosby and Jabar went in the car with Sydney, Julia and Joel. They're all like joking around. The whole thing was funny. That was great. I did think the meat of this episode was definitely between Zeke and his mom, which was interesting because she's a new character, right? But you learn a lot about Zeke in this situation that his mom was a little bit more tough on him, didn't necessarily say, I love you every day. Didn't necessarily shower him with warm and fuzzies. You know, like you can tell she was a, she was a, you know, a harder mom and it wasn't really that emotional. I think that was Bunny McDougal. Oh, okay. Do you know Bunny McDougal? I don't, but I'm like, okay. The fact that you just okayed it. That, do you watch Sex and the City? Can somebody check and see if that same woman that played Zeke's mom is Bunny McDougal, Charlotte's mother-in-law, the very challenging mother-in-law for Charlotte. Do I have it right? That's Braverman? Well, that's her character's name. I am correct. I'm sorry, I'm Francis Stern Hagen. Yeah. So on Sex and the City, Bunny McDougal is like super famous, like a character. Like Charlotte really has a tough time with her because it's just very complicated. Go watch Sex and the City and listen to Kristin's podcast. But so this is many years later. So this was like, I think that was, maybe this might be 10 years later. When was this, what's the date of this episode? When was this? The 2012. Right. So this is like 10 years after she was Bunny McDougal. Anyway, she's quite recognizable. The actress playing Zeke's mother was good. Yeah. But then, you know, we see Zeke's, like basically tells mom, one thing that I did differently with my kids than I had growing up was I tell them, you know, no matter what happens that day that I love them. It's like, no. Well, and they kind of, the kids kind of acknowledge it at the diner. Camille kind of says, look, he's nervous, his mom, blah, blah, blah. And they sort of say like, look at us, you did a great job. Right. And also when Camille said the story about how he wanted to be an actor and told his mom and the mom was like, well, what's so special about you? And look at him on that boat doing that commercial. I do think like that older generation wasn't really that big on I love yous or I'm proud of you or, you know, that type of stuff. They want to know. I don't know. I think it's a case by case because like my grandparents told me that all the time. Yeah. All the time. I think it's just case by case. Some people are more closed off. It reminded me a lot, not to bring everything back to housewives, but if you watch Beverly Hills, when Sutton meets like, it brings the girls to meet her mother and her mother's is like traditional Southern hard ass, like tough as nails type of girl. And, you know, she confronted her about that. Like, what I wanted you to do is to tell me that you love me and that you're proud of. I never got that. A very special episode of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Yeah. So I don't know. They did that kind of stuff. You know what I think is that Craig T. Nelson does not get enough credit for how awesome he is in parenthood. He's awesome. And same with Camille. Oh my God. Why am I blinking on her name? Bonnie Badelia. She is incredible. She's saying so much without saying anything. Like, I think that they don't get as much. I look, paranoid is so interesting because it's just a complete ensemble. There is no star. There's no one star. It's definitely like all these people carry this shit. Yeah. I agree with that. I definitely agree with that. Like even on paradise, right? Sterling Brown is the star. So does Sterling K. Yeah. Sterling K. Brown. K. Brown. Without the K, if the guy thrown off. He's the star with all these other people. But this, there is no true lead. They're all equal. It's like every episode has a different lead. Today it's Zeke. Yeah. Zeke is the lead of this episode. I also was super happy with the go to go to Bakersfield because it really was different. It took us out. It was super different. They're all in the scenes together. I thought, well done. Whoever thought of this idea. Great one. Yeah. I agree. I'm going to give it almost a 10. 9.7. And you know what I have to say too is I feel like we're in season three. Almost no one season three. And like things take it really redundant right now and they have not. You are so accurate with that. Very fresh. Yeah. You're right. It's we're not, we're not getting redundant. We're not getting tropey. Very fresh. Agree. It's a new obstacle each time. It's a great show. It really is. Like there's so many shows to watch. So it's like, but this is a great rewatch. I have to say, like if you're just looking for a show, this is it. This is it. This is great. Honestly, I will say it probably for the 6,000th time. Thank you guys for voting to for us to watch this. I love this show. I don't think I would have rewatched it if not for the voting. And I'm really glad. Yeah, I love it. Yeah, it's really good. My rating is I'm going to give it a 975. Wow. Yeah, we both given it high marks. Well, next episode is called Just Smile. Don't know what it is yet. And with that, Ray Vermin's out. Oh. Hey, everybody.
