Summary

Host Scott Becker critiques the widespread advice to "follow your passion," arguing it's poor guidance for young professionals. He advocates instead for finding the intersection between passion and financial stability, emphasizing hard work and practical career building over idealistic passion-chasing.

Insights
  • Following passion without financial viability is impractical advice that leaves young people unemployed and unprepared for workforce realities
  • Success in competitive fields like sports requires extreme dedication (24/7 work ethic), not just passion or interest
  • The optimal career strategy combines practical income generation with gradual cultivation of passion-aligned opportunities
  • Generational parenting advice emphasizing passion over pragmatism has created unrealistic expectations among young professionals

This is Scott Becker with the Becker Business and the Becker Private Equity Podcast. Today's discussion is this concept of follow your passion. And this is driven by the concept that over the last several days, I've talked to several young people, and each one of them has come to me with the concept of they want to be in a certain area. And a lot of it comes out of this advice they'd gotten from somewhere along the lines, teachers, parents, social workers, therapists to follow their passion. And I have to tell you, if I hear another person say that they're going to follow their passion, it's not that I'm going to shoot myself. And I hate to use that analog because people take it so seriously. I'll say, I'm not going to shoot myself, but I think it's such bad advice. I would say the real advice is follow your passion and make a living or even better, cultivate your passion and get a job. I see so many people. I've heard so many people in the last week tell me they want to be in sports. And this is every kid who ever played Little League now wants to be in sports as an adult. And the reality is not everybody is going to be Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports who built a newsletter working 24 I will tell you if you want to be in sports okay fantastic You better work like one of my friend sons worked 24 to get into sports It not just going to happen I heard somebody say to me the other day, well, the one thing I don't want to do is work with Major League Baseball because it's 162-game schedule, so it's really a long season. I'm like, are you fucking kidding me. If you want to be in sports, you better work 24-7 because everybody and their brother right now wants to be in sports because they got all this bad advice from their parents 100 years ago about following their passion. Fuck that. Get a job, make a living, and take care of your family and cultivate your passion. Make sure you're always looking for the intersection of where you could follow your passion or cultivate your passion and make a living. I am so sick of every spoiled kid having heard from their parents just follow their passion. Let me tell you, follow your passion and make a living. Do both. Find that intersection and cultivate your passion. Thank you for listening to the Becker Business and the Becker Private Equity Podcast. I hope this resonates with people. I hope it doesn't offend too many people. But I am so sick of hearing it from people that essentially are not employed, that have grown up with horrible advice from their parents. Advice from my parents was be a lawyer, doctor, and accountant. I don't care if you like it or not, but make a living. Ultimately, probably great advice. Thank you for listening to the Becker Business, Becker Private Equity Podcast.
