This is an iHeart Podcast. Guaranteed human. No one's safe at home in the Southern Conference. SOCON Fast Break starts now. Okay, Darren, this is now at a point in the season where a third of the way through six games into the 20-game conference slate and we're starting to see some separation, so we'll take a look at the standings here and run through these because now we also have a situation where there's no more undefeated as ETSU falls there at Western Carolina. So we've got ETSU at 5-1 in the conference, Furman at 4-2 there with Mercer and Wofford and Chattanooga. Okay, we're going to talk about Chattanooga. Here they seem to come right now. Yes, Dan Earl. Again, he is doing such a fantastic job coaching this team based on the injuries, everything that's going on there in Chattanooga. I would venture to say I think this is the best coaching job he's done, and he's had some really good teams, and he's done a really good job coaching some other teams. But the challenges that he's had to deal with with this group from an injury perspective, from a consistency perspective, I think this is the best job he's done, and it's really impressive. I was at that Wofford game on Wednesday night, and they just would not go away. And they were pesky, and they hit six consecutive games. Six consecutive threes there at the end of the game, and that was the deciding factor. And just a scenario playing out where it's the next man up mentality because of all of the injuries that have mounted over the season, including Colin Mulholland, who's been in and out of the lineup. And it was huge for him in the game against Western Carolina, how he came off the bench and really was the stabilizer and that force for Chattanooga. But going back to Dan Earl, I think to your point, there's no doubt that he is coaching and continuing to coach and showcasing. And I'm saying, you know, from an X and O's perspective, you know, that coaching. But there's more to it because he has this team believing at times, especially when it looked like they were faltering there. Absolutely. And in that first half of that Wofford game in particular, they they just they were on the ropes. They just didn't necessarily look like they had that energy that they needed to compete. Come out in the second half, and it looks almost like a whole new ball club. He's getting contributions from guys I don't assume he probably didn't think he was going to get certain contributions from. But heck of a job. Look, I'm not saying they're right back in it, but they're lurking. Yeah, three-game win streak right now for Chattanooga. So they are definitely climbing up the standings there. Then UNC Greensboro, 3-3. Samford, 2-4. 0-2 this week also. The Citadel, yes, two wins in the conference right now. 2-4 there for the Citadel as they recorded their first win of the season last week in that overtime thriller. And then also had their first road victory against VMI since 2023. December of 2023. My goodness. Yes, and of all things, it was against Notre Dame. It was the 65-45 game. I remember that. I remember that. Wow. Yes, exactly. How about that? There you go, Ed Conroy. Western Carolina, 2-4. They finished 1-1 in the week, and VMI 1-5, 0-2 for this week. And, again, it's talking about depleted rosters. VMI is sitting there. There's still no Ricky Bradley Jr. preseason player of the year. And I'm wondering now if we're getting to the point where will we ever see Ricky Bradley Jr. this season? Yeah. Look, I'm an optimist by nature, but I think we're at a point where we're probably not going to see them this year for a multitude of reasons. I just, I mean, you mentioned it. I mean, we're six games into the conference slate. Third of the way of the season. We're inching towards the end of the month in January here, you know, to come back for six weeks. And look, you mentioned it. I mean, they are banged up. No doubt. But this seems reeling at this point. they're not going to be able to compete to win a championship. Does it make sense at this point for Ricky Bradley to come back? That's right. It pains me to say that. Of course it does. Because I wanted to see him play, but I just don't know. Yeah, and that's a tough one to lose there, the military classic, to the Citadel at home. All of the key debts are there, basically. I mean, it's a night game, and there was a lot of optimism going into it, And I think a lot of people had that game circled because it is the Citadel. And we know the rivalry there between the two schools. And now it's split evenly. 63 wins for both programs against the other team there. And so, I mean, that is a true 500 type of rivalry, what you want. But for VMI, I mean, that's a tough one to lose at home. Yeah, and look, if you want to have any chance of somehow creeping into the top six, You can't lose at home. And, you know, we had talked about it. We thought this might be the year where they sneak out of having to play the first game of the conference tournament. And, you know, Saturday is one that you circle as a game you've got to get. Yeah, you definitely need to get a win, as you said, at home. But what's interesting is eight of the ten games this past week that we had in the Southern Conference, the road team won. That's significant. Yeah. Because we know it's so hard not only to win, but to win on the road, and especially in this league. And also we could say that with every conference, though, that it is extremely difficult to get road wins. That's why they're so valuable. That's why you hear coaches talk about gold trophy wins when you win on the road. And we saw that eight different times over the past 10 games this past week. No, look, it's huge. And that's how teams win conference championships. No doubt. Is you go win road games that you're either not supposed to win or that you know are going to be challenges to get those wins. And so when you see eight teams win on the road this week, among other things, and we've preached it, it tells me a lot of teams that are packed in pretty tight here and grouped. We saw it in the standings. Yes, or I should say we see it in the standings right now. All right, so looking at some of the games from the past week, and I think now, again, when you have some of these teams, it's going to be so hard to go undefeated, and ETSU, they experienced that. On the road, they're in the mountains, Cullowee, Western Carolina, gets the big victory, 72-68, and this was a game going back and forth the entire time. And then it's Marcus Kell with the putback. after the baseline out-of-bound play right there with one second to go on the shot clock with about 13 seconds to go in the game and a huge bucket right there. And unfortunately, Brian Taylor had a couple of opportunities for some big shots right there at the stretch and just could not get it to fall. And that's what I saw several times from ETSU, even in that first half. I mean, it was uncharacteristic, the low shooting percentage there, a well under 40 percent from the field for ETSU and a lot of missed opportunities in the paint. And that was ultimately the deciding factor for this game. But give Western Carolina a lot of credit. No, for sure. I mean, I think a couple of things that stand out to me back and forth, but obviously it still ends up as a L in the win-loss column. And you just start now. I mean, these road woes kind of continue for ETSU. I know that they've won on the road in the league, But if this team truly wants to win a championship, they've got to win these road conference games at a consistent clip because teams at the top of this league, they might have one or two hiccups here and there maybe, but you just cannot be losing road games if you want to win this league. Well, there's also the aspect of it changes things once you have that target on your back. 100%. When you're 4-0, when you're the only undefeated team in conference play, everybody going to come out there and we saw that Cord Stansbury with 20 points in that game and including shooting almost 90 there from the free throw line in the second half Another road victory, Furman going to Samford, depleted Furman team. This seems to be a theme right now for several of these teams as far as injuries, none more so than Furman as they're completely decimated with some injuries. Key players, know Tom House, know Asa Thomas, and we know Cole Bowser, I mean, Cooper Bowser, not in the lineup still, but it was the Alex Wilkins show. 28 points right there, and that's why sometimes you just have a guy, you have a dude that just takes over, and Alex Wilkins did that in this game. No, look, I mean, you said it about the young man. I mean, he just continues to lead this group, but I think, to me, a couple things there. One, talk about great coaching jobs. I mean, they're down three of their top six players, and they go on the road. A guy starting in Cole Bowser, who's going to be a very good player. No doubt. Two and a half, three weeks ago, the entire program and Cole's mindset was, hey, we're going to register this year. Yes, he's done. And now, two and a half weeks later, you're in the starting lineup. That's right. So to be able to instill confidence in him and, frankly, Cole himself, to be able to ready himself and be mature enough to be ready to step into that role. Just a really good job by Coach Ritchie and his staff to be able to get this group prepared, focused, and it speaks a lot to the culture that they have at Furman. We talk about it all the time, but it's real. This is a very underestimated win going to Birmingham and coming out here with a victory. The flip side, man, if you're Sanford, you're thinking, holy cow, we got a depleted Furman group coming in here. We're at home. We have to find a way to win this game. That's right. And so, man, I mean, I think they certainly let one slip away there. They definitely did. Charles Johnson with another big game also. And then just even from the perspective of how you talk about Cole Bowser and having the redshirt opportunity, I'm very frustrated with college basketball, especially coming from the NCAA, that you can play four games in college football and still redshirt in college basketball. You step out on the court. You're done. You're done. And the season's over. That makes zero sense to me when you look at it based on other sports. How is there not some uniform blanket based on percentage of games? Again, I know there's more games in college basketball. I get that. So there should be an allowance of games that you can play to be able to hold on to your red shirt. I completely agree with you. And, you know, just to put the caveat out there, there are, you know, and just so people don't think we're nuts, there are other ways to still potentially get that red shirt back. But, like, for purposes of this conversation, like we talked about, you step on the floor, you're done. Now, the frustrating, one of the many frustrating pieces I share with you on this is like, look, in a perfect world, if they don't have injuries, Cole Bowser probably keeps his redshirt. It's so frustrating that they have injuries and the kid gets punished essentially by the NCAA because Furman absolutely needs him right now. That's right. But like, it's not Coach Ritchie. It's not the staff. It's not the school. It's not Cole Bowser's fault. these injuries and now he is forced into action and and when I you know forced being the loose term he's played very well we have to figure out a way to be able to to see some some comparison with the football or a scenario like Cole's where like you can't punish the kid made him play you know and he misses out on half to a little bit more of a of a season of his college career that's right yeah it makes zero sense to me all right so that was our little tangent right there with the NCAA. All right, we did talk about Chattanooga with the big road victory there against Wofford, 76-67, knocking down, again, six consecutive threes. And Jordan Fryzon just continued to orchestrate the attack, 19 points, five assists. Tate Darner stepped up big. Brennan Watkins stepped up big with some big shots down the stretch also. All right, UNC Greensboro holds on at home in OT against the Citadel, 69-66. and this was a game where the Citadel, huge lead there in the first half, playing extremely well, and UNCG, they just fight. They claw their way back there in the second half, and Justin Neely keeps them close and then hits some massive free throws down the stretch, and UNCG somehow holds on to that home court advantage and takes home the win. They did, and man, this is one, if you're the Citadel, you're leaving there so frustrated because you had this one. You should have had it. And now you're literally looking at a three-game winning streak, and you're 3-3 in the league. That's right. I mean, that's what I'm saying. Now you have a chance not to have to play the first night of the National. They didn't win any conference games last year. Yeah. And so now you just missed out with three conference wins already, six games into the conference slate. But credit to UNCG for not quitting, grinding it out like you said. And I'll tell you, down the stretch, they defended. They did. They got stops. I mean, in overtime, late in regulation, the last couple possessions and the first couple possessions in overtime, they couldn't get anything attacking the rim. They were going east-west a lot instead of north-south. So credit UNCG for finding a way to dig down and pull that one out because the hole they dug themselves, a lot of times, whether you're home or on the road, you expend so much energy just to get back into it that you just don't have enough down the stretch. A lot of times, yeah. You can't get over the hump. Yeah, we see that quite a bit. All right, Mercer at VMI as they get a road victory. And this one was much closer than the 10-point margin there, 77-67. But this one's going to be remembered for Armani Mighty. Rebounds in this game as that's the second most in Mercer history and also the most there in Cameron Hall there in Lexington, Virginia at VMI's facility. Yeah, so that's pretty special right there. There's been a lot of games played. Rebounds in college basketball since 2023. Also, Oscar Schwebe there for Kentucky. So that's pretty special because he could rebound too. Yeah, yeah. And he's continuing to rebound in the G League at a high clip. No, that's, I mean, we've talked about it before, but he's been a massive, massive piece for that Mercer Bears team. That's right. Another road team gets the victory last second. Yeah. Basically, I mean, the ultimate last second as Blake Barkley saved ETSU and the Bucs with a game-winning tip right there at the buzzer. He finished with 26 points and 11 rebounds, and he was clinical, efficient. I mean, insane. But it was Keaton Norris hit the big shot there to put Samford up, and then here come the Bucs. And just you've got to be able to box out. You've got to be able to get a rebound right there. and somehow Barkley does just enough to get the rebound and the tip in right there and the game winner. Man, how about his emergence? Yes. Look, they've got to figure out a way to play better on the road, as I mentioned earlier. Man, if they can figure that out. But it's tough. That's the difficult thing. It's tough to win on the road. It is. And look, I mean, Sanford, tough loss to Furman, they're coming back, and they know they are desperate to get to one and one. But yeah, I mean, Blake Barkley, his emergence has been really, really impressive. And I mean, that team is just, they're scary when they're really clicking. When they're clicking, yes. Another team that's scary when they're clicking, especially on offense, Mercer. 102 to 92 against UNCG. Yes, another hundred points here in the conference yeah three games in six games of conference slate that mercer has scored over a hundred points it's a great point these are not these are not non-one opponents that you're playing in november and early december i mean these are conference games that are oh this very well too you get in the conference there aren many secrets now like teams know who you are Teams know who you are Yes You know and so I mean yeah Wow Yes. Almost 61% from the field in that game. You're going to win a lot of games when you have that type of production. And production from Baraka Koje, once again, he lived at the line going 14 of 18 on his way to 25 points. And also, we did see 20 points and 13 rebounds from Armani Mighty in that game as well. And Zaire Williams had a big game there, too. Wofford wins the I-85 rivalry there at Furman, 74-70. And Nils Mahofsky and Kamari Holmes combined for 40 points there to lead Wofford past the Paladins there in Greenville. And this was a game where it looked like it was going to be a blowout, even with the depleted roster there for Furman. And unfortunately, you see Mason Smith go out early in that game. And he was a guy who had some production there on the road against Samford, had just hit a three-point shot there and had a knee injury, and it didn't look good. I haven't heard any of the final results in terms of tests that were going to be performed, but it didn't look good for Mason Smith. Yeah, and he's such a great guy. You just feel for him finally getting an opportunity. Yes, getting the opportunity, getting the minutes. And like you said, played well against Sanford, and I think was establishing himself as a guy that Coach Ritchie could rely on even when some of these guys come back from injury. So you just hate to see that. I mean, thinking about him and his family, really, really hope that he's okay. They had, you know, most irrelevant stat of all time, halftime score. But, like, Furman was really, they were playing well. They were clicking. They were. Baba Franklin hit a big three-pointer there to give them some momentum heading into that second half. They built a 13-point lead with 10 minutes to go in that game. And give Wofford credit, they just kept grinding. They kept fighting back. They weren't shooting the ball well from the perimeter, but they kept going inside. Brian Sumter had a big game. He did. But I do believe it was Kamari Holmes and just his ability to attack the rim, get downhill, get guys on his hip, and he could get into the paint. And he did that in that second half at a very efficient clip. And then Niels Mahofsky delivered some huge three-pointers there in the second half. Yeah, and I believe it was a 17-0 run. It was. That Wofford went on. Yes, and I was calling that game, and you could sense it. It was building momentum. It was happening. and the fans there in Timmons Arena, they could sense it also. You know, I'd ask you this question, too, being there and up close and personal, anything away from Wofford at all, kind of run out of gas a little bit? Did it look like they just kind of ran out of gas? They just didn't have the legs. They didn't. And I felt that also their offense got stagnant. There was limited ball movement. There was one dribble threes. Those type of shots, I think they settled for some of those perimeter shots. And if you're not making them, then all of a sudden you're getting these rebounds and now you're in transition defense, and Wofford was doing a really good job of attacking it because, you know, the defense wasn't able to get set. And now that's when Kamari Holmes could drive to the basket, and you had to respect the perimeter shooting of Mahofsky and even Jaden Tyler, Chase Watley. And so when you have that, it's going to open up lanes for Kamari, and he did a great job getting to the rim. Yeah. So that's a big win for Wofford on the road. Huge win. It keeps them right in it. That's right. It definitely does. Okay, team of the week. I know I could easily look at Mercer because of the points they scored, the offensive production, the efficiency that they've had, the high shooting percentage, but I'm going with the Chattanooga Mocs. Based on the two road wins there against Wofford in Western Carolina, and again, looking at the totality of the team and the depleted roster from the injury perspective, and I think the starters are playing a lot of heavy minutes, but they haven't faded. They've actually almost seemed to get stronger in the second half with both of these games, and again, it's like the next man up mentality. They're 30th in the country in free throw percentage. They're at 77%. They're 11th in the country in three-point field goals made at 11 per game, and they're leading the conference at 36% from beyond the arc, And Dan Earl just got his 150th career as a Division I head coach. And that goes back to what you were talking about. Dan Earl is doing a fantastic job coaching this team this season. Look, I wanted to find another team to just have a different conversation. I think it's Chad as well. Like, I just don't know how you can't go with them. They shot about roughly 50% from the field this week. Yes. and you looked at them in the first half in a couple of those media timeouts, there was no talking, there was no rah-rah. It was a lot of just kind of blank stares. And I was sitting there looking, wow, this team might be, I can't believe I'm saying this, but this team might be done. And they come out, and Coach Earl makes some great adjustments at halftime, and he and his staff get that team going. Like we talked about earlier, they hit the six threes in a row. And that, I mean, I can't say enough about how well he has coached those guys up. Yes. And Brendan Watkins, you know, big week for him. Yeah. You know, this team, I think, is clearly different when Colin Mulholland can give you minutes. Oh, no doubt. But you feel for him, because I hadn't seen them live for a while until this past Wednesday. and you can tell, you just feel for him. He's not moving well. No, he's not. Yeah, but he was the difference maker in this game against Western Carolina. He was. There's 16 points in 14 minutes. Yes, exactly. I mean, that's highly efficient right there. And also going back to that Chattanooga-Wofford game, there's no doubt that the air seemed to be let out of the building when Luke Flynn went down with the injury there. And from all reports, that it's not season-ending. So that's very good from there. But again, give Chattanooga credit that they then were able to take advantage of a change of momentum, so to speak, and got hot down the stretch. And they also were 16 of 31 from beyond the arc there against Western Carolina. That's like video game level efficiency right there. So Chattanooga Mocs, the team of the week. All right, so looking at some of the players real quick that had strong performances. We know Alex Wilkins had a strong performance. We talked about it in that 28-point outburst against Sanford. Barakko Koje at Mercer, he continues to be the engine here in the Southern Conference, ranking 36 nationally in assists. And over his last two games, he's totaled 36 points and 10 assists. So he's playing well. Blake Barkley, model of efficiency. He ranks 18th nationally in field goal percentage and has recorded back-to-back doubles this past week. Yeah, that's pretty efficient. T.J. Johnson, again, you have to respect just his volume from beyond the arc, and he's leading the entire nation in three-point attempts, or one of the top in the nation in three-point attempts, based on how the stats are updating. Kamari Holmes, again, I don't know if we're giving him enough credit how valuable he is there to Wofford, and was a huge part of the reason why they were able to win on the road against Furman. Jordan Friesen, again, floor general, doing an absolutely fantastic job for Chattanooga. And how about Braxton Williams for the Citadel? Yeah. I mean, this guy is playing extremely well, averaging 13 points per game right now, and he was the main reason why the Citadel not only were in the game against UNCG, but ultimately gets the win against VMI. I mean he was the show for the Bulldogs Yeah absolutely And I mean I think I curious I don know if it ultimately changed anything but if he doesn tweak that ankle in overtime against UNCG are they potentially able to pull that one out? No, I think Kamari Holmes is as improved, and this is not a knock on him. He had moments last year, but he's as improved as anybody in the league. No doubt. He is a very good basketball player. He's kind of the engine that makes that team. He just couldn't get in the lineup with a lot of minutes last year because of guys ahead of him. You know, the Corey Tripp, the Jackson Civils, you know, that type of talent ahead of him. All right. But the performance of the week, player of the week, we already saw it. And I didn't have any situations where I didn't feel that it was going to be Armani Mighty. Because when I was looking at the entire week and the games that Armani Mighty has played, he was unstoppable against UNGG. He was unstoppable against VMI, and he went 7-for-7 from the floor against UNCG when he had his 20 points and 13 rebounds. And we've also talked about it, the 25 rebounds there against VMI. And when you look at just what he means for this Mercer team, and I'm excited we're going to be able to talk to Ryan Ritter and get some more insight just what he thinks. But he's nationally dominant. He's currently ranking third in the nation in field goal percentage at 68% from the field, number 33 nationally in total blocks, number five in total rebounds, number 11 in the nation in rebounds per game, and he had two and a half blocks this past week. And this is the type of interior presence that Mercer has with Armani Mighty, and we talked about it at the very beginning. I mean, just when we did our preview shows and there was questions, OK, we know he has potential, but is he going to live up to it? You know, how is he going to the minutes? Is he going to be able to have the minutes? And how is he going? Is he going to fade away in certain games right now? I mean, he's the anchor of the defense and there's no doubt that he changes the geometry out on the court for the opponents because they don't know what to do with him, not only from a rim protection standpoint, but when he gets the ball in the post, he's almost unstoppable because he can score at will, and then he's going to grab every rebound around. He had almost more rebounds by himself than VMI did as a team. Yeah, I mean, he averaged 14 rebounds for the week. You know, it's funny, and we talked about this a little bit before, but this is the first time in a handful of years that we've had this many good big guys in the Southern Conference. It's such a perimeter-oriented league, but we are consistently talking about a lot of these bigs that are making major contributions and difference makers at a very high level to team's success. And Armani Mighty is certainly at the top of that list. He definitely is. What he has been able to do on both ends of the floor, done a good job of staying out of foul trouble. He and that Mercer group. And he runs the floor very well. He does. He does. He is a mobile, very large man. Yes. He's a high major big man in the Southern Conference, and we're seeing some of that. All right, stat of the week. We'll continue the theme with rebounds. So there's three Southern Conference players that are ranked in the top 16 nationally in total rebounds. You've got Justin Neely sitting there at number two with 216, Armani Mighty at number five with 199, and Charles Johnston sitting there at number 16 in the nation with 181 total rebounds. And then there's also three in the top 25 for defensive rebounds per game. Justin Neely at number two, Charles Johnston at number 14, and then Armani Mighty at number 22 with six and a half defensive rebounds per game. So we're seeing some elite level rebounding here in the Southern Conference, and even it's carrying over to the national stage and showcasing that, hey, don't sleep on the Southern Conference. We keep saying it. Just don't sleep on the Southern Conference. They've got some really good players in here. And also, we will have to say eight road wins for teams in the Southern Conference out of the 10 games this past week. That's pretty impressive also. That could be a stat of the week. Yeah, that by itself could easily. Yes, it definitely could. All right, power rankings. Real quick, let's run through these. We've got VMI, number 10, the Citadel, 9, Western Carolina, 8, Samford at, no, excuse me, UNC Greensboro at 7. We've got Samford at 6, Chattanooga, 5, Wofford at 4, Furman at 3 now, Mercer at 2, and ETSU still at the top of the power rankings at number 1. What say you, Mr. Darren Angel? I agree with that to a T. I think Mercer has really put themselves in a good spot. They've won four in a row after starting off 0-2. And I think Chattanooga has obviously been the biggest riser here. They pick up three straight, get themselves at least back in the conversation. And Sanford sitting there at six, I think, from an outsider's perspective, is probably one of the more frustrating teams in the league right now because you just see that they've got talent to be able to compete. They've got so much talent. Jaden Booth's leading the country in three-pointers made per game. And they just seem to be, unfortunately, just a roller coaster. Yes. And, you know, so I would love to see them play a little bit more consistently. I think Greensboro is kind of sliding back into what they've been for most of the year. They have certainly played better. But again, for them, it's really been on the defensive side of the floor. Yes. And they can have some offensive explosions. I mean, they did score 92 points there against Mercer also. So you have that ability, but you can't give up 102. When you score 92, you're supposed to win that game. That's just the reality of it. All right, so now looking at some of the games coming up this week. Western Carolina at Mercer. This one's going to be an interesting one. Mercer undefeated at home this season. And think about Mercer just from a perspective of six games into the conference slate. Four of them have been on the road. So that's a tough way to start for Mercer. ETSU on the 21st at Chattanooga. Oh, here we go. The Battle of Tennessee. Yes. That's going to be a very interesting game. Can ETSU, to your point, can they go win on the road again? Got to get that one. We did see where they lost to Western Carolina. Furman at the Citadel. And I highlight this one just because this is now the Citadel an opportunity. You've just had a road win. You've got two wins already on the season. You come home. Furman banged up. Are you going to see a Tom House be able to come back? I don't think you're going to see Asa Thomas, Cooper Bowser, maybe, but that's probably questionable. So is this an opportunity for the Citadel to, you know how, we've already talked about how hard it is to play at McAllister. Yeah, and it's one of those weird things. Furman has just, they've struggled at the Citadel the last handful of years. So it's a heck of an opportunity for a team that is riding some momentum right now in the Citadel. Can they get a big home win? And the flip side is, look, when Furman's healthy, they're as good as anybody in this league. So can they take care of one on the road that they need in order to keep themselves afloat to compete for the regular season championship? That's right. And then on the 24th, Mercer at Wofford. That's a big one right there. And then also on that Saturday, Chattanooga at Samford. That's a big one. Can Sanford get a road win? Chattanooga, can they continue some of their momentum that they've had on the road also? All right, so there's a lot of big games coming up, and I'm all for it.
