Insights
  • Long-term commitment and stability in media requires finding the right market fit and management support, not chasing opportunities elsewhere
  • Team chemistry and complementary skill sets (financial expertise, humor, broadcasting experience) are critical to show sustainability and growth
  • Local radio stations can successfully rebrand and modernize ('resto-mod' approach) by adding new platforms while maintaining core audience trust
  • Personal connection between host and audience is the fundamental driver of show success—without listeners, the business model fails
  • Work-life balance and family considerations are legitimate factors in career decisions, even for on-air personalities in competitive markets

We'll put a bull on it because, you know, whether I'm out at the Nathan Willett thing the other night, whether we're out doing an event with Keatsman, whatever it might be, going to his lunch that he had there in Lee's Summit a couple of weeks ago, people say, oh Pete, you know, I don't know, you gotta hang around. Well, the answer is yes. I love being here. My girls all love being here. Every one of my children have been born here, and it's the longest I've lived anywhere since I was 18 years old. So when you do that vagabond radio thing for a while and then you find a place that you love, you want to stay. If they like you and you're having success and management's great and they're treating you well, then you want to stay. So I have agreed to a nice contract extension here in Kansas City, and I'm looking forward to making it a great few more years and not going anywhere. All right. So you'll see the new ballpark open. Well, it's not that long of a deal. It's not that long of a deal, John. There will be another one, God willing, before the ballpark opens up or the stadium opens up over in KCK. But I'm very excited to continue on. And that's a testament to this audience that has shown up for, gosh, eight years now, starting year nine today of this show. And I didn't know if we were going to last nine months. I had no idea. The station was in a tough spot, but I thought I can't make it any worse. So nine years later, I think we've done some good work here. We're growing, we're expanding. Keatsman's been an amazing addition. Those that came before him in that slot, Ray Stevens, of course, Chris Tagal, and many others. I'm grateful to each one of them because they have all made this radio station what it is today. We will also have some more local programming coming your way before long. So we're excited about all that's to come here on KCMO, John. In the car business, they would call it a rest-o-mod. We've got, we've kind of restored the station. We've added some new modern facilities. We've got the FM 95-7 now to go with the 810. Yes, 710, 710. That's how old I am. Yeah. Didn't make Murphy Nart bell on tonight. Superfan, head dealer, Conrad Dobler. I know we don't really talk about the AM anymore, but we're still on the AM dial. Further people up north and to the east. That'll reach you a little better. Exactly. Well, and I got to give you guys credit too, John. You have not been around for every day of the eight years starting nine, but you've been around for probably seven of the eight, I would say, give or take. And Mark came in. What was that, Mark? 2020 you got here? It's been almost six years. 2021, five years. Oh, 2021. That's right. Okay. It was right around now five years ago that Mark jumped on board. And listen, you guys are the best teammates I could ever have. You fit your roles perfectly on this show. You're exactly what I think the show needs in addition to me hosting it. And I'm grateful for both of you guys as well. So thank you. Appreciate that. Yeah, you bet. It's good to be wanted in the past card still work. Yes, exactly. So we're excited about that. And obviously we're thrilled to continue to make Kansas City home for a very long time. So thank you for that. And it's all because of you. Really. I mean, if you're not listening, this is not working. Okay. It's really that simple. I'm just glad you didn't have to Chris Johnson and set out for a week. No, no, no, we never, you know, we never got there. Sweet. Yeah, no, it's all good. I mean, we got great bosses around here. All right, from Donna Baker, Jim Foxx and way on up the corporate food chain. They've all been very good to work for and work with. And you know, when you got something good, why screw it up? All right, like why? And you know, I talked to some places and had some phone calls, but you got to realize what you got. The grass is not always greener. I've done New York small markets have done it and the grass is not always greener. John, it's fun. We work with people and we're kind of jack of all trades at this point, right? And we all kind of know different things. And it's like, I know we're not going to slide any numbers by you, you know, with your financial background. So you bring that to the microphone, which is useful and explaining the mill levy, et cetera. I'm like, I'm clueless on that stuff. So, you know, bringing that background into it helps. Sometimes it's just a radio guy bringing his headphones, Ingle, and hi, everybody. I was reading in USA today, today, that we're not doing that. We're not doing that, man. I could do it if you needed. No, we don't need that. No, we don't need that. We don't need that. But if I need someone to introduce Bon Jovi, you're the guy. All right, kill it up. Along with the great sense of humor, of course, you know, tomorrow too, tomorrow is nine years since we found out we were pregnant with Claire. I guess Kate technically was, I didn't do much carrying of the baby. But so tomorrow was my second day on the job. It was the day after. So tonight is eight years since Villanova beat Michigan in that national championship game after they beat KU in the final four, which I was down at power and light for before I did a single show in Kansas City, went down to power and light, watched the game, had a Villanova hoodie on, and everybody thought I was a K state fan just trolling power and light. I remember these drunk guys came up to me. Oh, yeah, where's Villanova? It's in Villanova, Pennsylvania. It's like a town. It's a real place. Oh, okay. So today was eight years ago since Villanova won that national championship. Tomorrow I get a call nine or eight years ago from Kate, who was still closing up shop outside of New York. And she says, Oh, took a pregnancy test, took actually two or three just to make sure and we're having a baby. And you know what I did? I mean, listen, it was a lot at once, right? New job, new city, she's halfway across the country. I'm here. I'm doing a show. I don't know where I am. I don't know up from down. I'm living in a hotel room here in town. I have no idea if this job has really any future to it. I hope it does. I thought it would, but you don't really know until you know. And then on day two of the job, it's like, Whoa, we're having our first kid. Now it wasn't a total shock, but you know, it's always a surprise on the first one, right? So what do I do? Well, it's a little stressful. You feel a little out of sorts. You're celebratory. You're happy. You're also scared to death. You got to take the edge off a little bit. The defunct Applebee's on Metcalf and 435. I went there and had a couple of pops and just kind of did my own thing. So the now closed Applebee's, which I guess is now like a Buffet sushi place, as someone told me the other day, is where I often think of when I think of Claire and the news that we found out we were pregnant with her back in 2018. Unbelievable. It's weird how life works, but that's been, it's been a fast eight years. When you're having a good time, it goes quickly, John. You know, that's how it is. You're what? Yeah. Hey, when John, John was, John was still a young man when we started this show together. Hey, it was a spring chicken, man. I didn't have any gray hair. Yeah. Well, I got those coming in too. So, you know, what's that say? Check engine, ABS or maintenance light on. Take the guesswork out of your warning lights with O'Reilly Veriscan. Oh, oh, oh, oh, O'Reilly Auto Parts. Hi, I'm Joe Salci. I hosted the stacking Benjamin's podcast. You know what? A lot of us get taxes wrong. Filing your taxes is basically data entry. There's been this trend of people going, oh, it's so cool to file my taxes in August. It's so awesome. Don't worry, I have an extension. It'll be fine. I like totally do it later. Stop. Do your frigging taxes now. That was a really good fashion voice. Did you like it? You do that more frequently, please? Yes, every show for now. Stacking Benjamin's. Follow and listen on your favorite platform. Next roll with Vernon Davis, the transformative journeys of athletes, artists and entrepreneurs. Ladies and gentlemen, lights out Sean Merriman. I want to be the biggest and the best one I do. And so whatever it takes, I'll get it done in business and everything else. All I do is know how to fight and earn what I want.
