Summary

Chalene Johnson discusses a severe skin reaction from an expensive skincare product co-developed by Martha Stewart, detailing her dermatologist visit and the discovery that the product's ingredients may be responsible for contact dermatitis. She also promotes her Patreon membership tiers offering unfiltered personal content.

Insights
  • Premium packaging and branding can create false confidence in product safety, leading consumers to skip ingredient verification
  • Post-procedure skin is significantly more vulnerable to adverse reactions due to compromised immune response and tissue disruption
  • Influencers with large followings may receive fewer high-value product placements than micro-influencers with engaged niche audiences
  • Dermatologists may decline board positions with skincare companies due to ingredient concerns, signaling potential quality or safety issues
  • Direct-to-influencer product seeding is a common marketing strategy targeting affluent midlife women demographics

I want to keep you company. And for selfish reasons, I just want you to know about Patreon. If you enjoy the Wednesday episodes I do here on The Shaleen Show, where it's like more personal, less structured, the type of content that keeps you company while you're out on a long walk, there's no question. You need to join Patreon. on. It's a private podcast feed where I share stuff I can't put on the normal show. The sponsors, there are no sponsors. There are no filters. There are no ads. It's just me, sometimes very, very explicit, always real. Think of this as kind of like my own little personal audio diary. It's the kind of things I share with my girlfriends. I tell stories I should not be sharing publicly. and sometimes my unfiltered experiences or just sometimes opinions. And sometimes I share things that I find them interesting, but not all of my listeners will, but those of you who know, you know, okay? So each Saturday, you're gonna get a little sneak peek. It's a clip from one of my full-length Patreon episodes. If you love it and you want more, awesome. Go to shaleen.com forward slash more. There are two different levels. There's between friends. It's all the real life behind the scenes stuff. And then there's one called the vault. The vault is where you're going to get my husband, very, very unfiltered. I already have my acknowledgement of cancellation letter prepared. It's where I put all my deep dives. It's all the collections. Anything that I've ever released goes to the vault. And today's episode is from between friends. Here we go. So, but when I did the brows and lips, I had a, like, kind of an inflammatory response. Skin was like, what are you doing? And I got inflamed. Okay. I let that chill out. And because I don't know how to leave well enough alone, got to keep fucking with your face. Like, what else is there, dude? It's a hobby of mine. I'm good at it. I tried a new product, a facial tanning mist. Should be no problem. Minor issue. But I did wake up and I was like, whoa, I'm going to get canceled for doing blackface. Like my face was so brown. Brett was like, what's going on? Now I was able to cover it up with my makeup. I was like, okay, first of all, it's way too brown. But I was like, it's also very red. and irritated. And then for like about five days, my skin went Sahara Desert. And I tried all of the things. The only thing that kind of calmed it down. And I'm not saying it fixed it. It didn't. But using castor oil in certain areas really helped. Now, I'm not trying to tell you to use castor oil all over your face because you don't want to do that. Most people don't. it is the lowest rated oil for, there's a word for it. It's escaping me right now, but of all the oils it the one that least likely to cause clogging So the scientific word I think is comedogenic comedogenic comedogenic which basically means it doesn have ingredients that clog But castor oil is very, very thick, meaning occlusive, meaning like an aquaphor. You wouldn't put aquaphor all over your face because it is very thick and it could clog pores. Right. But there are certain areas you can put on. Anyway, so I've been using the castor oil. like under my eyes and around. And that's helped to reduce the redness a little bit. And it's really helped how painful this has become. But it's not going away. It just keeps getting worse. And I'm like, could this really be the tanning spray that I used one time? It can't be. It can't be. Sorry, it got so loud. I was like, I'm not even going to try recording this. Okay, so I was sent this very expensive lotion from a company called Elm. And it just showed up. And sometimes that happens. And when that happens, we'll usually check with Warren because he handles all of my like partnerships. And if somebody has my address, I mean, you can, my mailing address that is not my home address, but you end up getting on some list of people or companies and they send to influencers. Like, dude, no joke. I get shit. I get nothing. I get fucking nothing. I have almost a million followers on every platform. Like I'm not a million, but like 800 on Instagram or close to it. Or maybe it's over. I don't know. I don't look. Like 700 on TikTok and 700 on YouTube. And I think I'm close to a million on Facebook. Whatever. Do I get shit sent to me that's like awesome? No. Does my daughter? Yeah. Like I think she has like 25,000 followers. I know I'm not comparing, but I'm like, she gets sent like Chanel purses and designer bags and cute clothes. And she got like a pair of Bose headphones. I'm like, from who? And she said, from Bose. And I'm like, oh, did you do an ad for them or something? She goes, no, they didn't even, I guess they're just hoping I wear them. I'm like, well, what am I over here? Chopped liver. But anyways, I do get sent stuff, but it's not the same kind of stuff she gets. so but this week sorry i'm losing track but don't i'm always saying don't let me forget but i'm gonna forget because you're not even here okay so let me continue but i know i am gonna forget if i don't tell you that this week i was sent an 800 espresso machine we don't drink espresso we don't even do keurigs we just do coffee and i don't want more things on my counter so I'm like what do I do with this thing so normally when a company sends you things typically it's because I'm on somebody's list they know that I talk to ladies like you and y'all have more money than those 20 something so you know all the stuff that they market to midlife women get sent to me I don't play that game I'm not going to post something just because you sent it to me. That's very nice, but I'll send it back if you're thinking I'm going to post something about it or you just think I'm going to try it. I'm just very loyal to my products. Unless, like for example, the only reason why I tried OneSkin is because all my friends were talking about it. I'm like, all right, I'll try it. So anyways, I was sent this very expensive lotion from a company called Elm And before I donate it before I give these things away when they are sent to me I always first check with Warren and say like hey is this something I supposed to try And he said, well, you don't necessarily have to, but they reached out. The company Elm is, I forget, it's like a very well-known skincare company. And they're doing this line that's co-developed by Martha Stewart. And I'm like, oh, well, the packaging is freaking beautiful. Like, holy cow. It came in like, you know, one of those boxes where you're quite certain that the box costs more than the ingredients. Like really thick, heavy, cardboard. It's cardboard, but like with a magnetic clasp and it's got that linen feel to it. And you're like, wow, what can I repurpose in this box? It's so nice. And if you've ever sold anything retail, you know, a box like that is probably a $20 box, just the box to hold the products in and just the way they have it packaged in this beautiful tissue and this bottle that it came in. So I got one was, I don't know, like basically collagen pills. I'm like, all right, I don't need those. I already have my collagen product. I don't need to hop around products. And then they sent me this face serum. And it came in a bottle that I kept trying to open, no joke, for like a week. And I'm like, this is so weird. I finally got it open. And then I'm like, you're supposed to like take this plastic tube and dip it in the lotion and then like rub this tube on your face. What the fuck is this? But I'm like, well, it feels really good. Yeah. And then I realize, oh, no, you're not supposed to rub that. That plastic tube is attached to the pump. And I just had opened it wrong because it's a really weird bottle. You have to look at it online. It's really weird. but it's gorgeous and it's just one of those it's packaged so nice that it tricks you into thinking this must be the most exclusive high-end skincare I could ever slather all over my face and you know I'm dealing with this very highly sensitive skin so I'm like reading the the marketing material that tells you what it does for your skin of course I don't read the ingredient label because I'm like because I'm Martha Stewart. There couldn't be anything toxic in here. So I put it all over my face repeatedly, repeatedly, repeatedly. So I'm like, well, this is expensive and it's free. I'm just going to use the shit out of it. And then I'm really not using much else. We go to drive to the villages and we're only going to be there for three days. So I'm not going to bring a month's worth of skincare. And I just grabbed that stupid little bottle and my estrogen cream. And while we were driving in the car, for four hours plus an hour being stranded on the side of the road when I had to go pee. I just kept slathering it on my face. And I'm noticing like, God, it's getting more and more red. And then while we were in the villages, I was just like, I mean, it is, it's getting painful and it's getting drier. Like I've started, I don't know if you've ever had contact dermatitis, but it can dry your skin out and you suddenly look 80. I'm like, why did I get a facelift? My skin just like and every little crevice and crack and now I'm having to see my sister so and I want to look cute so I putting makeup on top of this dry cracked red angry fucking skin It not good And my point is try to continue to deal with it We go home. This morning, this morning, actually yesterday, when I saw Dr. Levinson, I said, do you have a dermatologist you can recommend? I tell him what's going on. And he's like, yeah, let me see if she can get you in. So I go and see her this morning. And I'm in her office. And I'm telling her the only things that are different, I'm really trying to rack my brain. What could this be? She tells me, yes, with the facelift and the skin being stretched and all those things. And even just your immune system being compromised, you know, your skin is an organ. And like that whole system has been disrupted. So anything you do to it, anything, it's going to respond so differently. because it is still feels as though it's under attack. I'm like, okay, so what you're saying is this is not a good time to get Botox. I'm always trying to push it. So she's going through the list of things that I think it could be. And at the time, the only thing I could think of was a tanning spray. I'm like, yeah, tanning spray. I don't normally use a makeup setting spray. In the last month, I used a makeup setting spray once. She's like, well, those tend to have alcohol and it could be that. She was like, I just, I don't think this, because I wiped off all my makeup when I went to her office. And she looked and she's like, oh, there's very clear demarcations in your redness that do not go all the way up to your under eye. In other words, it's, she said to me, it looks like a pattern that you would see from where you're applying a topical serum or lotion or something. So what are you applying on your face? And I tell her, I'm like, do you think it could be my estrogen cream? And then I'm like, no, it can't be my estrogen cream because I take that right up to my water line. And so I'm going over all the products and I said, well, I didn't put the spray tanning mist in that area. I literally like kind of wiped it off. She's like, it could be that, but you sure you're not doing any other new lotions? I go, oh, wait a second. Yes, I am. Yes, I am. Yes, I am. So then I pulled up the picture of it and I said, I can look up the ingredients. And she said, wait, let me see the picture. So I show it to her and she goes, she kind of chuckled. And I said, oh, is this the culprit? And she goes, no, I'm kind of laughing because that company wanted me to be on their board. And you guys, I already tell you that part right in the beginning. If I did just fucking get over it because that was a couple of hours ago and I forgot. Okay. Okay, but so they asked her to be on this board of directors and she wasn't interested because of some of the ingredients. I hope you enjoyed that.
