See, leptin is this key hormone that's released from our fat cells, and it circulates, gets up into our hypothalamus and tells us we're satiated, so we no longer have cravings, we're not hungry, and it tells us to burn fat for fuel. So those anthocyanins help to improve leptin signaling. On top of that, the anthocyanins have been shown to shut down cancer stem cell formation, so they actually help kill cancer stem cells. Did you know that there's a fruit that tastes great and has the ability to heal your gut, improve your blood pressure, turn up fat burning, make your skin look younger and reduce your risk of heart disease and cancer. It's true. This fruit is a symbol of abundance and blessing in the Bible. This fruit is mentioned throughout the Old Testament of the Bible and the Hormetic hymns of ancient Greece. It was one of the fruits that the scouts brought back to Moses to show that the promised land of Israel was rich and fertile. King Solomon, who is considered the wisest man to have ever lived, wrote about this fruit in the Song of Solomon and used it as a metaphor for beauty, love, and fertility. And unfortunately, most doctors are unaware of the health benefits of this fruit, and they very rarely ever recommend it for their patients. So what is this biblical fruit? It's pomegranates. Yeah, that's right. Pomegranates are not only shaped like a human heart, but they also contain unique compounds I will discuss in this video that will heal your gut, improve circulation and blood pressure, turn up fat burning, and reduce your risk of heart disease and cancer, and make your skin glow and look younger. In this video, I'm going to review the unique compounds within pomegranates and show you how I like incorporating it into my diet on a regular basis. You see, in natural medicine, we say, like improves like. If a food looks similar to a human organ, it most likely has compounds that support that organ. Not only does a pomegranate look like a human heart from the outside, but also it looks like it on the inside. You see in the painting Madonna on the Pomegranate by Sandro Botticelli, the pomegranate, when peeled, is depicted with chambers resembling those of a human heart. Specifically, the arrangement of the seeds and the membranes within the pomegranate mirrors the atria, the ventricles, and the major blood vessels of the heart, including the superior vena cava and the aortic arch. You see, pomegranate is so good for us because of a few key compounds, namely the polyphenols within it. You see, it's a good source of vitamin C and potassium, and that's important, but it isn't where the main benefits come from. It's really these unique polyphenol compounds that give it its characteristic sour or astringent flavor and dark red color. Let's start with alagy tannins. They're the most abundant polyphenols in pomegranates, and they are really powerful. They're really great for the gut microbiome, really great for quenching oxidative stress in the body. There's also something called alagic acid, which is one of the most powerful compounds for the gut microbiome and intestinal cell function. In fact, a lactic acid is metabolized by our gut microbiome and turns into something called urolithin A, which is the most important postbiotic for the intestinal cells. Urolithin A actually stimulates something called mitophagy in the intestinal cells, and that allows the intestinal cells to break down old, damaged mitochondria. You see, a cell is only as healthy as the health of the mitochondria, which produce all the cellular energy. And our intestinal cells in particular they constantly under free radical and oxidative stress Their mitochondria are breaking down all the time Urolithin A comes in and it rejuvenates these intestinal cells these intestinal mitochondria And oligic acid is the number one compound, that number one nutritional compound that helps stimulate the production of urolithin A to help regenerate and rejuvenate these mitochondria. and again, we find that oligic acid in pomegranate, but we also find it in things like raspberries, strawberries, and cranberries. Any sort of fruit that has kind of this sour or astringent-like flavor, that is the oligic acid that you're tasting. This astringency, muscadine grapes are also a good source of the oligic acid. Getting a certain amount of oligic acid into your diet on a regular basis can be one of the most powerful things you can do for helping repair the mitochondria in your intestinal cells and creating a healthier, more stress-resilient intestinal lining. And the stronger your intestinal lining, the less chance of leaky gut and overall inflammation in your body. So really important that we're getting that allagic acid that's in that pomegranate. We also have anthocyanins. These anthocyanins are what give the red color to the pomegranate, the strong red color. And They're also really powerful antioxidants. We also have flavanols like quercetin and rutin, which are powerful antioxidants. Both quercetin and rutin are very antihistamines. So if you know people that have things like asthma or seasonal allergies, quercetin and rutin, which are in the pomegranate, are really, really good for lowering this histamine response and lowering allergies. And for people that are dealing with histamine intolerance, really powerful for that. Also, anybody that's dealing with, for example, a viral infection, we know quercetin acts as a zinc ionophore. It helps move zinc into cells where zinc can be used to strengthen the immune system. It also, zinc is really important for stopping viral replication. So we learned about this with COVID, for example, that people, you know, they needed zinc. They were depleting their zinc levels when they had this viral infection. But not only did they need zinc, they needed something to help get the zinc into the cells. That's where quercetin came in. We have high amounts of quercetin in pomegranate. So it really helps with antiviral, antihistamine type activity to help balance the immune system. And those compounds, all of them that I talked about, they've been shown in research to exhibit powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, heart health, skin rejuvenating, brain health, liver health, and again, great skin benefits. Allegic acid is so powerful at reducing inflammation and turning up fat burning because it impacts all five layers of the gut. You see, the bottom layer is the intestinal cell. We talked about how allegic acid helps basically stimulate the production of urolithin A, which strengthens the intestinal cells. But also the second layer is the gut mucosa. That sits right above the intestinal cells. And lactic acid has been shown to increase mucus production from the goblet cells. We need really good strong mucus lining right above the intestinal cells. That's actually our first line of our immune system. That mucus lining should protect us from different pathogens, candida, parasites, bad bacteria, because it has something called secretory IgA that lives in the mucosa and helps basically bind to different environmental toxins, as well as toxins from bad bacteria, parasites, and candida, and doesn't allow them to get into the bloodstream. When we have a weak mucus lining, it allows for toxins to interact with the intestinal cells, damaging the intestinal cells, and getting into the bloodstream where it drives up whole body inflammation. So again, oligic acid increases the mucus production, which gives us a really good, strong immune component protecting the gut lining from environmental toxins and from toxins from endotoxins from bacteria, things like lipopolysaccharides, as well as acetylaldehyde and gliotoxins from the candida and from parasites. The third layer is the actual microbiome. And what allagic acid does is it improves the mitochondrial function in the intestinal lining. And the better the mitochondria function is, the more oxygen they pull out of the intestines. When they pull oxygen out of the intestines, that lowers the oxygen capacity in the gut. And that's important. We think about oxygen as really good. And it is really good in the bloodstream, but not in the gut. When there's a lot of oxygen in the gut, it actually increases pathogenic bacteria, parasites, and candida. We actually need a low oxygen environment in the gut, and that's what oligic acid does. It helps strengthen the mitochondria so they can pull the oxygen out of the intestinal lumen, and that allows for diversity in the microbiome. It allows these obligate anaerobic bacteria, these bacteria that only can survive in a very low oxygen environment. That's going to be things like Acromansia mucinophilia and fecal bacterium presnitzii. These are keystone bacteria. When microbiome researchers look at a healthy gut, they find high levels of Acromansia and fecal bacterium because these produce a lot of urolithin A, butyric acid, these postbiotics that strengthen the intestinal lining. So oleic acid from the pomegranate is one of the best things for creating diversity in the gut microbiome. The fourth layer of the gut is the chemical messengers. And we have all these different inflammatory agents. And we also have compounds, these chemical messengers that actually help to reduce inflammatory markers. So pomegranate has been shown to reduce, when we're consuming pomegranate and getting allagic acid, it reduces inflammatory messengers like interleukin-6, interleukin-17, and tumor necrosis factor alpha, as well as nuclear factor kappa beta, which are all associated with inflammation, gut inflammation. And also it increases something called intestinal alkaline phosphatase. That is really important for removing the endotoxin LPS So intestinal alkaline phosphatase helps bind and remove LPS which is a potent inflammatory trigger in the gut So what does that mean That means oleic acid from pomegranate lowers inflammation gut inflammation And finally, it impacts that oxygen layer where it helps to balance the microbiome and allows for those obligate anaerobic bacteria that produce healthy postbiotics to really thrive. So ultimately, pomegranate is really important for strengthening the mitochondria in those intestinal cells, which now produce more energy through aerobic respiration, allows for the obligate anaerobic bacteria that are high postbiotic producing microbes. it allows them to really thrive. They can only survive in a very low oxygen environment, so now they're able to thrive. Whereas the pathogens, candida, your fungus or yeast that are pathogenic, your pathogenic bacteria, things like Klebsiella and Enterobacter and Giardia and different parasites, it allows them to die off and it provides for really healthy mitochondria. You see, unhealthy mitochondria, again, struggle to use oxygen to produce cellular energy, whereas healthy mitochondria use the oxygen, and they pull the oxygen out of the intestinal lining or out of the intestinal lumen, and they use it for energy. And that lowers that oxygen content and kills off the pathogenic aerobic microbes. If you're busy with work, family, and activities like I am, you're probably using up your electrolytes, leaving you wired, tired, and depleted. You see, what most people don't realize is that if you're under stress or doing intermittent fasting, eating a low-carb diet, training hard, or even just living an active, busy life, you're losing more electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and magnesium than you probably realize. And most electrolyte drinks don't come close to replacing them. That's one of the reasons I use Relight from Redmond every day. It's made with Redmond's Real Salt, an ancient unrefined sea salt from Utah that naturally contains trace minerals, and it contains two types of magnesium for better absorption. There's no sugar, no artificial ingredients, just a clean formula that actually works. And it has unique trace minerals that improve cellular hydration better than any other electrolyte formula on the market. I drink these electrolytes every day because I can feel the energy boost. I have better mental clarity while I'm working and greater strength gains in the gym. And they've even improved my sleep quality. My routine is simple. I use the unflavored Relight while fasting in the morning. Then a flavored version. My favorites would be strawberry and lemon lime. I use those around workouts. In order to really create a great, healthy gut microbiome, we don't necessarily need to take killing agents. We just need to provide the right environment, the right amount of oxygen to allow for the good postbiotic producing bacteria to thrive and the aerobic pathogenic microbes to die off. Now, allactic acid has also been shown to improve blood pressure. It does this by lowering inflammatory compounds. We talked about LPS, lowering LPS, interleukin-6, interleukin-17, tumor necrosis factor alpha, nuclear factor kappa beta. All these really potent inflammatory triggers go down and it increases nitric oxide, which relaxes the endothelial lining in the blood vessels and reduces oxidative stress in the blood vessels. And that oxidative stress is a primary trigger for plaque formation and the development of atherosclerosis as well as arteriosclerosis and the development of heart disease, blood pressure issues, and all kinds of different cardiovascular problems. So one of the best things you can do to stabilize your blood pressure, reduce your risk of heart disease, is consuming pomegranate on a regular basis. It also improves fat burning. It does this by strengthening your mitochondria. The healthier your mitochondria, the more fat burning takes place. Again, fat burning is a result of healthy mitochondria and their ability to burn fat for fuel. On top of that, the anthocyanins that give pomegranate their red color help boost something called GLP-1, glucagon-like peptide one, in the same way that really popular medications like Wagovi and Ozempic, these GLP-1 agonists do, and they work to reduce appetite. So they actually work just as good as the medications without side effects. And they also help to reduce LPS in the bloodstream, which means improved leptin signaling. See, leptin is this key hormone that's released from our fat cells, and it circulates, gets up into our hypothalamus and tells us we're satiated. So we no longer have cravings, we're not hungry, and it tells us to burn fat for fuel. So those anthocyanins help to improve leptin signaling. On top of that, the anthocyanins have been shown to shut down cancer stem cell formation. So they actually help kill cancer stem cells and they protect normal cells from oxidative stress. And they turn up something called apoptosis or programmed cellular death. So when we get cells that are really damaged, like zombie cells that have become so damaged that they're no longer doing what they're supposed to be doing. And instead they're releasing all these inflammatory metabolites that are actually poisoning the cells around them, when we get these zombie cells, we need them to die. And so we need to turn up this programmed cell death. That's one of the things that the anthocyanins that are in the pomegranate do, turn up cancer cell death, right? And they purify the skin. If you want to have more anti-aging, less fine lines and wrinkles, you want pomegranate. It improves circulation and it lowers inflammation and it has things like vitamin C as well as the anthocyanins that help with proper collagen and elastic production. So we need good collagen and good elastin for healthy skin. When we have that, it means your skin has more natural glow, less fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots. So if you want to have the best looking skin you want to eat pomegranate seeds on a regular basis Now my favorite way to consume pomegranate is what I love is what I do is I actually take it I put in organic Greek yogurt So I get good quality protein I get organic Greek yogurt ideally grass fed if I can get it. But typically, you know, oftentimes it's just organic Greek yogurt, high in protein, high in healthy fats. I get the whole milk form, not the fat free. And then I'll actually put in some vanilla collagen peptides, which are high in glycine and different amino acids, proline, hydroxyproline, that helps support good skin, right? Good collagen production for healthy skin, healthy intestinal lining, healthy joints. It helps to rebuild your joints as well as your nails, your hair. So I put that in there. I want to get an extra 10 to 20 grams of collagen peptides, and they're flavored with stevia, so they taste good as well. I mix that up, and then I take the pomegranate seeds, and I go ahead and I put them in there, mix it up really, really good, and it tastes absolutely amazing. So I've got the antioxidants and vitamin C that are in the pomegranate, as well as the allagic acid and all the different compounds that support my gut microbiome. I've got the organic Greek yogurt, which is high in protein, healthy fats. And on top of that, organic Greek yogurt also has probiotics in it. And I've got the collagen peptides. So I've increased the protein content, and I've got the kind of collagen that helps support good, healthy skin, hair, nails, joints, and gut lining. So it actually tastes great. Three ingredients, that's really all you need. Tastes great. I like to have that as a dessert after I eat a high protein, healthy fat, blood sugar stabilizing meal. And that's really good to do. Now, common questions I get, what is the best way to cut through a pomegranate? And there's actually whole videos on this. Okay. But really the best way to do it is you cut right off the top, right? So maybe like a half an inch down or so, half an inch to an inch, you cut off the top. Then you look inside the pomegranate and you've got the membranes, which are white. You cut along each of the membranes. You don't cut through the bottom of the pomegranate, just cut into each of the membranes and kind of open it up a little bit, right? And you kind of just kind of open it up and it comes out in quarters. So you have a quarter each of the pomegranate seeds. and then you go ahead and you turn the bottom of the pomegranate so that the quarters are still in it and you kind of smack the bottom of it and it will knock out these seeds. It will knock out kind of the quarters, the layers of the pomegranate. And then you can go ahead and kind of de-seed it and that's great. Now, the membranes, people ask me, are the membranes healthy? Membranes don't taste good. They're really, really tart and sour, but they actually are very rich in antioxidants. And so if you can eat the membranes or even just eating a little bit of the membrane, it's very healthy for you, not just the seed. Of course, the seeds taste great. That's where the sugar is. There's also great nutrients, anthocyanins, that are in there. But you have the most amount of oleic acid actually in the membranes. So consuming a little bit, at least a little bit of the membranes, can be really helpful. Now, can you take pomegranate supplements? You certainly can, okay? But I'm actually not a big fan of this. I think you get a lot more benefits from actually eating the pomegranate itself. People will say, well, can I take pomegranate supplements? Can I drink pomegranate juice? You could, but again, you're going to get more benefits by consuming the actual whole pomegranate. You're going to have the fiber, which lowers the blood sugar response. When you take the juice, it's going to spike your blood sugar. So I don't recommend fruit juices in general. Plus, the juice itself has actually lower amounts of antioxidants than when you eat the pomegranate itself because it's been left out and it's started to oxidize. So you get a lot more allergic acid, this mitochondrial benefiting nutrient, when you consume the whole pomegranate right after you open it up, right? It's protected. You open it up, exposes to oxygen. Immediately as you open it up, it starts to lower its antioxidant content. So consume it within 30 minutes of opening. And that's a great approach to getting the maximal benefits from the pomegranates. And then are there other fruits that have similar benefits? Yes, there are. Some of my favorites would be things like raspberries, strawberries, muscadine grapes, which are like very astringent and tart. They're not like your sweet grapes that are out there. But raspberries, strawberries, and blackberries are also very good. but I will tell you, nothing compares to the pomegranate. This is why the Bible talks about it. This is why the Greek hymns talk about it. You know, again, it's looked at as, you know, this source of blessing and wealth and fertility. And I think the reason why is because God knew it was so jam-packed with nutrients and so healing and beneficial for our body. And so if you want better skin, better circulation, better heart health, lower risk of cancer. If you want better gut microbiome, lower overall inflammation levels in your body, start consuming pomegranate every day. How much pomegranate can you consume? You can consume a whole pomegranate every day. Or what I do is I'll typically eat two to three over the course of a week. I think that's a really good therapeutic dosage. Eating about two to three full pomegranates each week. Eat maybe a half a pomegranate at a time, right, per sitting. And that will give you all the powerful nutrients without a tremendous amount of fruit sugar. And that will really help you out as far as achieving your health goals.
