Okay, let's get it. It is locked on lsu. Your team every day. I'm your host, Matt Moscona. LSLU held its 14th spring practice on Thursday. The media was invited to watch the entire practice. I was there. We'll run through it. The Tigers have one more practice in spring. It'll be Saturday, but it is closed. So no media availability at all for Saturday's practice. We've got no details about it. So this is it for our practice reports. The Tigers were outside and it was a nice sunny afternoon, late morning, early afternoon for this practice. And they went just helmets. So helmets, jersey shorts, no shoulder pads. So they were really limiting the contact. I think it's probably a smart thing is they, they, they sort of build up and then taper down to the backside of spring. So I don't know if Saturday will be a, a scrimmage, a full contact period. We'll see what information we can get from that. But this practice started like all the others with the quick six period and it was a bit of a landmark day for the, the dozen or so 13 practices. I believe that we've been able to see this period. I went back and looked at my notes and I charted one time, one time this spring when the offense has scored in this period. If you're, if you're an everyday or you've heard me talk about this. If you're new to these reports that the team goes outside, they run and the first thing they do is an 11 on 11 period. They call quick six. It's six plays for the offense and it has gone very heavily skewed to the defense throughout all of spring. It didn't start good for the offense because Jordan Ross had a sack on the first play but then trade as Green had a catch, then Jace Brown had a reception and then a slant to Philip Wright, a quick slant and a 50 yard plus catch and run for a touchdown. We couldn't see exactly where the ball was placed because we're standing in the end zone but the touchdown was coming toward us. Wright was lined up on the right side, caught a quick slant, housed it right down the seam so showed off great speed, beat the two safeties and an awesome play this the Tigers get in the end zone. They ran a two point play and it was Jackson Harris who scored on the two point conversion over safety tie Benefield. So it was very nice to see the LSU offense have success there in that that quick six during individual periods. Some notables here. Oh by the way to Marcus Cooley and Whit Weeks Both participated in 11 on 11 today with the ones now. There were no shoulder pads, there was no contact. But those two guys had sort of been held out of a lot of the team periods here. But it was nice to see both Cooley and Wit Weeks running out there with the ones now. We told you in our last report that Malik blocked in the defensive tackle transfer from Auburn was was sort of dinged up during individual period. I just happened to be standing over there watching the defensive line as they were doing a sled drill and he something bothered him. He went off to the side, worked with trainers. They took him to the the injury tent and then he did not return to practice. Well, Blockton was not at practice on Thursday so no Malik blocked and William Satterwhite remains absent the backup center. So Ryan Morett the freshman continue taking the reps with the second team at center. We've not seen Solomon Thomas all spring. He was not there. Trey Brown also number two also the Old Dominion transfer also continues continues to be absent. So we saw him last Saturday with a boot on his left foot. He was there but not participating, was not there here on Thursday. So that was sort of the attendance. I did watch the one on one wide receiver DB drills and I charted 26 reps. This is again just this is an this is a drill, as I explained, that should be skewed toward the offense, right? It's. There's no safety help. There's no pass rush. It's just quarterback and the receiver know the route and a DB is just on an island by themselves. This is a drill that should be skewed toward the offense. But the defense continues to have a lot of success in this drill. Of the 26 reps that I charted, the offense won 12 of them. The defense won 14 notable reps. Jackson, Excuse me. Jace Brown had a. A touchdown over Ty Benefield. Dusted him. Great catch by Tyree Holloway over PJ Woodland. I want to make sure I have this number charted right. Forgive me. There was Jakeem Jackson had an interception against Malik Elzie. Ball's a bit under thrown. Jackson made a great play on the ball, came back and got it. There were two. I'm sorry, three pass interference penalties. One on Michael Turner against Trey Wilson, one on desean Spears against Tyree Holloway, and one on freshman defensive back number 36 who I charted. I. I. Forgive me, I keep forgetting his name. No, I just started the jersey numbers. Number 36. My apologies. Let's see, 36 is Amari Peterson. I'm sorry. And then 85. The receiver is Josh Jackson, who's the McNeese transfer. So touchdowns during the 1111 I mentioned Jace Brown had a touchdown over Ty Benefield. Jace Brown had a touchdown over Fahim Delane. Is also a nice day for Jace Brown in this drill. Malik Elzy got revenge after Jakeem Jackson had the interception earlier. Elzy called a touchdown against Jakeem Jackson. And the other really good reps. I thought Haven Finney had a win against Roman Mothershed on a really nice pass breakup. And then PJ Woodland against Philip Wright. Had a great read on a ball, a pass breakup, deflecting the ball into the ground. So some good on both sides, some touchdowns, some interceptions, some really nice balls and plays on both sides. In the 11. On 11 or excuse me, in the the one on one drill, they ran the inside run drill again. I'll get to 7 on 7 and 11, 11 here in just a second. But they ran the inside run drill. If you've heard us explain this, this, they start at the 40 yard line, the minus 40. So 60 yards from the end zone. And the ones got four plays, the two's got four plays, the threes got four plays. And this is a drill where the it is inside run. I mean everything is, you know, the ball is going between the. Between the lines effectively between the tackles. It's an inside run period. The ones Landon Clark actually ran with the ones in this period. Longstreet ran with the ones for the rest of practice. But in this period it was Landon Clark and Landon Clark ran a quarterback draw for 60 yards. So that was the big play. Jackson Harris caught a quick slant for a touchdown. The offense quick slanted the defense to death today when the threes went out there, no success at all. As far as the special teams, we got to watch punt returners, kick returners. Brad Wing, incidentally was at practice today standing with and and chatting up the punters a little bit. Your punt returners were Trey Wilson, Jace Brown, Jabari Mack, Winnie Watkins and the new with addition to the punt return group was Dylan Jones, the running back. Trey Wilson did m muff another one And I'll tell you, it's a little disappointing because Trey Wilson, I've said that he's the Florida transfer. He's a former five star. He is sudden and he is explosive and he has a different gear than all of the rest of the receivers. He's not the biggest receiver. He's you're smaller in stature. They have him listed on the official roster as 5 11, 190. So they have bigger receivers. Malik Elzy is bigger, Jackson Harris is bigger, Roman Mothershed is bigger. They have bigger guys. But he is sudden, he is quick, he is explosive. He's got to catch the ball and he's certainly got to catch these punts and he's just muffed too many. In this drill, your kick returners were Harlan Kaden Durham and Corey Barber, the freshman. Those are the three. I thought it was a really good day for the, for both punters as well in that. In that period. So after that they had two more periods. It was seven on seven and then the team period the 11 on 11. So we'll get into what we saw with that as we continue. Tigers went 7 on 7 and we've explained this quite a bit. The ones get five plays, the twos get five plays. The ones get five plays, the Twos get five plays. So it's 2:20 snaps now the on Tuesday when we told you about this, there was one ball that hit the ground and it was the final play and it only hit the ground because PJ Woodland was flagged for pass interference. So it was a near flawless 7 on 7 for the offense on Tuesday. Not quite as flawless as that, but still a win in each period for the offense. The ones go out there. Quick slant to Philip to Philip Wright, another slant to to Philip Wright and then a 25 yard run by the quarterback, a catch by Malik Elzy, a catch by trade as Green and then a touchdown on a slant to Trey Wilson. I know I've talked about him plenty y'. All. He's explosive and if you get him the ball in space, he is dynamic and I am excited to see what he can be in this offense throughout spring We've talked a lot about Jackson Harris, about Jace Brown, about Winnie Watkins and justifiably so. Malik Elzy has been a big riser. Those four have probably been among the receivers the most consistent and most impressive. But I'm not sleeping on Trey Wilson. He is just. He, he is, he has a different gear, a different skill set from all the others and I think he's a big play waiting to happen. He showed it there. The twos go out there. First down. Really nice play by Devon Keys. It was a pass from Landon Clark intended for Jace Brown and and Keys read it beautifully. Jumped into the passing lane and knocked the ball into the ground. Quick slant, Corey Barber catch by Malik Elzy and then a touchdown by Malik Elzie. CJ Jim Coily was back at safety. It was a coverage bust maybe thought he had help, didn't. It was down the right sideline and Malik elzy for a 50 plus yard touchdown catch and run. Again. When you think about Elaine Kiffin offense, what we all think about in process is they go fast, they create confusion for the defense. You're going to get gas runs, big plays, coverage busts. And in the second half of spring we have started to see a lot of that early. It was, it was not good for the offense. I mean, Lane Kiffin said use the word discouraging when describing the offense a couple of Saturdays ago. Ever since then the offense has found their stride and I'll continue to remind you that's without your starting quarterback in Sam Levitt. So the twos score, the ones go back out there for a red zone possession. So the ones in the twos now each got a red zone possession and it didn't start great for the offense. Jace Brown had a catch, a short catch. Traders Green had a short catch. Really nice pass breakup by to Marcus Cooley covering Winnie Watkins. But then again it was a red zone possession. So they're down just outside the five yard line and who's on long street? Dumped it into the flat on the left side to Harlan Berry who scooted in the end zone for the touchdown. They ran a two point play after that intended on the back line for Trey Wilson and he was being covered by Fahim Delaine. Blake Baker was standing on the back line and Blake Baker was yelling at the official to throw the flag on his defensive back. It was such an egregious pass interference as Delane couldn't keep up with with Wilson who shook free on the back line and would have caught the two point conversion. So they threw the flag right There for a PI against Fahim Delane. So the twos go out there, same thing. Red zone possession starting at the 20. Kaden Durham had a catch in the flat. It was an incomplete pass intended from Malachi Thomas. It was Jakeem Jackson in coverage, but my goodness, Landon Clark just flat missed Winnie Watkins. Clark was looking left where Watkins was breaking toward the end zone. And then he started working his progression of the right through it in traffic. It was incomplete, but Winnie Watkins was wide open in the end zone. So that would have been a touchdown. Just a miss there by Landon Clark. Really nice play by, by Jace Thomas to force an incomplete pass in the corner against, against Brown. And then on the fourth play, a really nice pass breakup by Zach Weeks on, on Jackson Harris in the back of the end zone. Actually Jackson Harris, Weeks sort of pushed him out of the back of the end zone. He collided into a wall behind the padded wall, but a wall behind the end zone. And Harris took off his helmet, went to the sideline. But then on the final play, Malik Elzy on cj. Jim Coily goes into the end zone for the touchdown, which was, which was really good to see. So that was the seven on seven period. In the. So in the seven on seven period, all four periods of seven on seven, the offense ended drives and touchdowns against the defense. They went to the team period where ones, twos, threes each got a possession. Then they ran two point plays. The defense had some redemption at the end, but the first team put together a nine play drive where they the biggest play was on second down. So Husson Longstreet rolls right, he throws complete to Malik Elzy. There's a total coverage bust. Sound familiar? Well, hat tip to PJ Woodland who didn't give up on the play. Not only does he catch Malik Elzie, but he forces a fumble and recovers it. Now they let the offense continue the drive right there, but it was a beautiful play by PJ Woodland, a great recovery. They would end up, the office would end up with a goal to go situation and they'd run on the ninth play, a direct snap to, to Dylan Jones. He fumbled the direct snap, which they did three or four times on Saturday. And they continue to have that issue. Fumbling the direct snap to the running back, but Dylan Jones fumbled the snap, picked it up and ran it in the end zone and scored. So nine plays. The offense did get in the end zone with an Because PJ Woodland did force a fumble. The twos went three and out. Dylan Carpenter had a sack. Dylan Carpenter, y' all has quietly had a very good camp. Listen, your starters are Prince Willum, Monmiellen and Jordan Ross. But they are looking for someone that's going to step up and give them depth with Gabriela for injury. And Dylan Carpenter has answered the bell. He's at a very good spring practice. So twos go three and out the threes go out there. 92 had a sack. Forgive me some of the the younger defenders, I've lost track of their number 92 is Brandon Brown. So Brandon Brown, I had a sack on the threes. Craig Walton who had a 77 yard pick six in the scrimmage on Saturday, darn near had another one. He jumped another route on Emil Picarella and just couldn't. Cat couldn't haul in the the interception but he, I mean it just banged off his shoulder pads. He would have had another after that. They went to the two point play. So the one scored a touchdown. The twos went three and out. The threes also went three and out. And then the defense got their redemption. So they went to a two point play period. So lining up from the three yard line for a two point play. One's got three plays, two's got three plays. This is how it looked. First down, they roll right, throw a jump ball to trade as green and triple coverage. Incomplete. Second down, they run a reverse pass. It's basically the Philly special. Longstreet starts left. He hands it to Jace Brown coming right who's looking to throw. Ty Benefield tackle for loss. Pass never gets off. Third play, Longstreet rolling right. He's. This was the worst rep of the day by who's on Longstreet rolling right, pressure in his face. He's about the numbers on the right side. Heaves the ball back across the field to the left side looking for Dylan Jones. It was desean Spears who's in coverage and thankfully for type for Husson, Longstreet Spears had his back to the the. To the line of scrimmage. Had he turned around. This is a pick six and probably like a 95 yard pick six. But it's definitely an interception. In fact instead it was just an equally pass. So the defense pitches the shut out there. The twos go out there. First down, Fahim Delane gets a pass breakup in the back of the end zone against Corey Barber. Second down, Dylan Carpenter gets his hands up, knocks a ball down at the line of scrimmage. Third down, they run a quarterback draw stuffed at the line of scrimmage. The offense was 0 for 6 on on the two point plays. Big win and redemption for the defense after they gave up four touchdowns and four possessions on the seven on seven and the first team scored a touchdown as well in the 11 on 11. So my big takeaway and we'll do a full spring recap certainly after we talked to Lane Kiffin on Tuesday. But my big takeaway is the defense was outstanding early in spring. The offense really struggled to find its sea legs, but as spring went along the offense got more and more comfortable and they found big explosive plays. And I think you have some real emerging talent in guys like Dylan Jones and Malik Elzy who were ones maybe we weren't counting on or thinking of, that clearly took a step forward in spring. So that's it for our practice reports for spring as the Tigers will practice one more time on Saturday and then on Tuesday Lane Kiffin will meet with reporters to sort of put a button on spring and then football goes into hibernation until we see him again at SEC Football Media days. But exciting times as Elaine Kiffin era is about to put a button on its first spring practice drills. Okay, that'll do it for us here on today's episode of Locked on lsu. So do me a favor.
