Summary
The episode centers on a towing accident in Montgomery County where a car fell off a tow vehicle and hit another car, sparking an extended discussion about towing mishaps, improper towing techniques, and caller stories of dangerous towing experiences ranging from military tanks to refrigerators.
Insights
- Professional towing incidents are common; callers with towing experience reported frequent equipment failures and loose vehicles on highways
- Consumer knowledge gaps around proper towing setup (hitches, dolly operation, steering wheel locks) create significant safety risks
- Towing accidents are more likely to occur with non-professional setups (U-Hauls, personal vehicles) than commercial operations
- Geographic luck plays a role in accident severity; rural two-lane roads limit escape routes compared to multi-lane highways
- Social media communities (subreddits like 'idiots towing things') document widespread towing failures, suggesting systemic safety issues
Trends
DIY towing becoming more common as people move/transport goods without professional servicesLack of standardized consumer education on towing safety and equipment setupSocial media documentation of transportation failures creating awareness but not necessarily behavior changeMulti-vehicle towing (double-towing) remains legal in some states despite demonstrated safety risksProfessional towing companies experiencing liability issues from improper hookups and equipment failure

Which if I were behind what happened, I'd crack my pants. Officials said that, hold on, officials said that a car that was being towed, this is yesterday, fell off causing an accident in Montgomery County. The crash happened at Frederick Road and Krogan Lane. According to police, the car that was being towed after coming off hit a second vehicle after it fell off the tow. Awesome. Police have asked drivers to find different routes instead to expect delays in the area. Was it, was it just being, like, was it on- Like, not on a flatbed, like a tow truck. So it's running on its back wheels, right? Or was it, I don't know. Was it running on its back wheels? Was it on a flatbed tow truck? Was it just being towed by another car? Was it on one of those big haulers? Dude, there's no way it's not being towed. No, that's being shipped. Yeah. How was it being towed? I'm with you, though. The panic. If I saw a car come off of a tow, forget it. Brick pants. Immediately. And it did, it hit another car. Is everyone okay? I believe so. I mean, obviously there's some damage. Yeah, okay, the car might not be okay, but no one had to go down. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. Pretty lucky. No injuries, according to MCPD. Okay. How was it being towed? And what is your thought when you're driving the vehicle that is towing it? Not as bad as the one that just saw it come off the car. You just, you glance up in the rear view. Hmm, that view changed. It had to. Although you know what? I bet that's also a bad feeling. If you're towing the car and it comes loose, that's a bad feeling. Not as bad as I'm behind it and here it comes, but watching it go has, because you know you're responsible, I guess in some way. But the difference is the perspective. I'm gonna die or they're gonna die. True. And luckily, like you said, no one got hurt. Do you envision it being sort of a one-off type tow though? I don't picture a tow truck. Or maybe I picture like a U-Haul with the car attached to it. Okay, that's fair. Like something that is not done. Right, it's not a professional that's doing the time. All the time, yeah. Although I bet, I bet, I bet on professional tow trucks they come loose. I bet the folks at the tow yard have some stories. Of course they do. It's a little differently. Yeah, but they still come loose. Have you ever had a tow a car? Tow a car? Oh, yeah. Not have someone come out to tow it. Have you ever driven a car that's attached to another vehicle? Yeah. And how did that go for you? We did all right. Who set it up? Like when was this? Oh, this goes way back. Are you helping somebody move or something? That's exactly what I was doing. Yeah, we were helping. No, well twice now that I think about it, because once we, I was sat in the car being towed because that car had broken. It wasn't my car, but a car had broken down. And so they were towing it and I sat in that put it in neutral. Yeah, exactly. And then with the car and hoped that nothing would break if the car in front of me would break. I've done that. But yeah, I've been in a car that's towed. Didn't it? Isn't it against the now? Isn't it against like, say, for example, you have an RV or a U-Haul? It's illegal to have somebody in the car. Is it? I don't know. I think it's illegal to have. I think you can have an animal in there, but I don't think you can have a person in there. Oh, you mean like something that's in a crate? Yeah, not like a dog with goggles. The yeah. No, no, no. I think like if you're if you're if you're in a U-Haul and you're in your towing a car, I think you can have an animal in the car, but you can't have a human. But now that I think about it, you're probably right. Although I bet there are professional towers that lose vehicles, but I bet normal, but nonprofessional people lose cars all the time and not in some sort of remember that video we saw? No, just come lose out of Texas where they were towing a car with like a long chain. Yes, it was a disaster. Yeah, like from the get go, they had a problem. You're talking about somebody. I set this up. I know what I'm doing. I got the hitch. I got I even hooked up the lights and something's gone wrong. What? The whole feels lighter. Man, I got this way distribution. Can't feel a thing. Wait, where am I going? Line two. Hi, Elliott. The morning. Hello. Yeah. Hi. Who's this? Hi, this is Ellen. I have a friend who had just got this BMW. He was all proud of it and he got a flat tire and the tow truck driver came to pick him up to Tom to take him to get his tire repaired and his car in fire. It was completely demolished and like the tow truck company wouldn't even like take with ability. Like he didn't get a new car out of it. Like not. Okay. So that car didn't come loose, but it caught on fire. It caught on fire. Like I. Happened. It was like a new driver and he hooked something up wrong, I guess. And like it just caught on fire like wow and he didn't even try. Damn it. Hey, your phone keeps breaking up. Hold on one second. Keep driving. I'll get you into a new tower. I guess there are different types of mishaps. I also imagine like I feel like and this is probably the wrong perspective to have. Where'd I say this was Montgomery County? And so I listen, I get that Frederick road could be busy. I feel like it's better to lose that car on Frederick road than on 270 on the belt way. Yeah, I mean, sure. It's all relative more lanes for me to move out of the way on 270 than on Frederick road. I'm trying to pull up the intersection to see what it looks like line six. Hi, Elliott in the morning. Hey, good morning. How are you? Hey, I'm doing great. What can I do for you? Yeah, you guys are talking about towing things. So yeah, I'm an active duty service member and the Abrams main battle tank. I was towing one behind and then the tow bar snapped when I was going down a hill. So then I saw about 81 tons of freedom barreling down this hill and I had to use my tank to get in front of it and try to stop it. You know, man, it was it was kind of a mess. So that's one of those caravans that I see on the road where I'm like, God damn, look at those vehicles and that thing came loose. Oh, no, it broke the whole thing. Yeah. So it was just free floating down the hill. The fucker factor was real. Did it hit anything? No, right? Well, you said you used your tank to stop it. Yes. Yes, I used my tank to stop it. And yeah, it was it was definitely terrifying. I heard that loud. And oh, no. Wow. Wow. That's a good one. All right. Very good. Thank you, sir. Thank you, my friend. I need. Hi, Elliott the morning. Yeah. Hi. Who's this? Hey, it's Dan out of Richmond. Yes, sir. Hey, buddy, I just want to let you know down in the Richmond area, we got, uh, you don't see all the time, but every now and then you'll see like a pickup truck with Shane's hooked up to another car and that will be hooked up to another car. Basically, the three cars going down the road, but I see one down in the Richmond area actually loses the third vehicle and flip off into the shoulder. It's probably about maybe a year ago. Wow. Wow. Come and loose is so like doesn't it? Thank you, sir. Towing two other cars. Yeah. Yeah. Don't they call that like the double bar? I have no idea where like I want to say that I want to say it's illegal in some States, but it would be like, let's say you, you're, you're, you're, you're an RVer, but you still have a car and like when you park the RV for six weeks or whatever. Yeah. And so they'll pull two cars. I've seen that. I don't think I ever. I think it's against the law in some States. Sounds like it. But you can. So you would have, you would have one car attached to the RV and then another car attached to the car that's attached to the RV. But like, for example, Diane, you're renting a U-Haul and you want to tow your car. Would you, would you know how to hook that up? No. So you just watch it. You just watch a YouTube video and no, I'm having somebody do it. No. Would you know how to do it? I'm in the same boat as Diane, which we also need to actually tow a boat. Yeah. Forget everything you had planned for this weekend because you are sitting on your couch and winning from the comfort of your own home. I'm Ago Bowdoin. My next guest, you know, from Stepbrothers Anchorman Saturday Night Live and the Big Money Players Network, it's Will Ferrell. My dad gave me the best advice ever. I don't know what that means, but I just know the groundlings I'm working my way up through and I know it's a place that come look for up and coming talent. He said, if it was based solely on talent, I wouldn't worry about you, which is really sweet. Yeah. He goes, but there's so much luck involved. And he's like, just give it a shot. He goes, but if you ever reach a point where you're banging your head against the wall and it doesn't feel fine anymore, it's okay to quit. If you saw it written down, it would not be an inspirator. It would not be on a calendar of, you know, the cat just hang in there. Yeah. It would not be. Right. It wouldn't be that. There's a lot of luck. Hey, Elliott, how you doing? What's the deal with that? Oh, wait, I swear to God, that thing has been there forever. It looks like it. Because when I used to live over by there, I feel like I know it. The second you said that I knew exactly what you're talking about. Is it like when we talk about how people would just abandon them? I don't think it's abandoned. It's in someone's yard. Oh, yeah, it's just sitting there. It's right by the road. Yeah. And I think there was a van next to it too. I don't remember the van, but the second you said boat, I know exactly what you're talking about. And it looks like, yeah, it's been a staple of drive for decades. Hi, Elliott in the morning. Hey, class, how you doing? Hey, good. Who's this? My name is crash. Okay. Yes. What could I do for you? And I used to work for you all back in the day and you would not believe on how many people don't know how to hook up a tow dolly or a car trailer whatsoever. And how many of those would you have to go retrieve the car off the side of the road? I've only had stories of cars coming off dolly is going down 81 or 66 or 95, but I have never had to retrieve a car off the side of the road ever. All right. Very good. Thank you, sir. Could you imagine? Just, you know what? Just, you know what? It's moving weekend at tech and there goes my car. So I pulled up the intersection where this happened yesterday. They got lucky because it's not what you think of Frederick road possibly being. It's more rural than anything. It's at this point, it's two, it's two lanes, one going one way. The other going the other way. You know what? I don't want a two lane street. I'd rather it be a four lane street. I can't go anywhere. Like, like if I'm going that way, I'm into a guardrail or I'm up on the grass. Okay. But I'm just saying the number of cars that could have been involved. Yes. My escape routes are very limited. That's I didn't think of that. Yeah. You could go into and that's what I care about yard. As the as the cars come loose and is barreling towards me. It does look like there's decent slope. Oh, so that thing's going to pick up speed. Oh, it's like like that one tank that came loose. Which is a problem. I wonder if because it's right down the street from the Hyatt's town volunteer fire department. I wonder if they were involved. What did that guy say? Nine 900 tons of freedom. Hi, Elliott the morning. I see Dustin's ass crack. What? Is he wearing like low rise? I don't know. I'm looking out the window and he was bent over doing something. I saw a pencil holder. No. Yeah. Shave. Shave. He wears a belt. Yeah. And his pants are down. Stop. I'm telling you. He bent over. He just pulled him up. I don't believe you. Here. He just did it. Tell Dustin to come here. Hey line six. Bear with me for a second. He pulled him up to mock Elliott like no. He was talking to somebody and then he pulled him up. Yeah. Where's Dustin? Yeah. Do you do me a favor? Will you do me a favor? Turn around. What? Turn around. Why? No, don't don't don't do anything. Bend over and touch your toes. No. Please. Yes, please. Alice. Alice. She got left. Yeah. No, I saw your ass crack. You're walking. Whatever you were doing over there. I was installing the new air condition. Well, you weren't picking up a big. I know that. Yeah. Is that all? Yeah. Yeah. No, but nobody believed me, but I was like, I just saw Dustin's ass crack. Yeah. All right. Line six. Hi Elliott in the morning. Wait, hold on one second. Yes. Like so were you seeing hair? You know, on the lower back? No, I saw like a soul patch. The no, it was like somebody said, Hey, is the hair growing out of Dustin's ass crack? Let's look and he spread his cheeks and all the hair was growing out. But he didn't spread what position was he in. If you bend over your cheeks open, but how he's going to show you a science right like his feet were apart. This is how a catcher sets up at home plate and then he went to fix the air conditioner. No, but if you're like this and you bend over my ass goes that way. But how spread for his legs? He was, I don't know. He was lifting. I don't know what he was doing. I know is it doesn't matter. He got a hairy ass crack. That's all. All right. I lost line six. I'll go to line five. Hi, Elliott in the morning. Hey, Elliott, what's up man? Hey, what's going on dude? Hey dude. So this is Ian from Charleston. I was moving down here and I had a U-Haul and the ball that like connects the trailer to my car. Right. The nut that it the nut that attached that to the tow hitch was gone and I didn't know it until me and my boy Jason were unloading the trailer having driven from North of Virginia to Charleston and the whole thing slipped up. So I was driving with it just like kind of hooked in there. Barely never. So it was now and I know exactly what you're talking about, but the thing never came loose. Never came loose, but I was it was a wing and a prayer and about what an inch of steel holding it. Wow. Wow, dude, you are so lucky because that you're right. That thing could have come completely loose. Then what then I had to drive it back to downtown Charleston to return it with a and we zip tied it to the trailer. I feel like that'll hold. Yes. All right. Very good. Thank you. How's life in Charleston? How's life in Charleston? Hey, it's good man. Let me rock one of those hoodies. Oh, I had no problem. No problem. Hold on one second. Hold on one second. And does everybody remember what is my favorite? What's my favorite place to public bathroom to take a dump in in Charleston? Bennett the Bennett Hotel. Absolutely. What is this? What am I watching? I was not familiar with the subreddit that Donna just sent over idiots towing things. And it's just oh my God. Oh my Jesus God. Pictures and video of idiots towing things. But wouldn't you? If you somebody's out, if you saw any of that on the road, yeah, wouldn't you wouldn't you panic? Well, something secure bumping. That video is called trailer tippy taps. That's like that's frightening. I got what there goes a boat. There goes a boat. That came loose. Watch it. Right down the driveway. 900 tons of freedom just came loose and it's good. Oh, you know what? Oh damn right into the girl that car. Where am I going? Have you seen this before? No, it's a called again. Idiots towing things. Idiots towing things. Know what my afternoon is. Join. Where am I? Where am I going? Kristen like to hi Elliott the morning. Oh man line two. Did I make it? You did? Who is this morning? Hey, it's Jessica from seven. Good morning class. Hey Jessica, how are you? Oh, you know, lip and the dream nightmares or dreams to buy that reason I'm calling in is I have been dating my auto mechanic boyfriend and I was 15 and if anything that you learn out of that is you're getting heated in cars to be told you're you know behind whatever he's working on as a side job and you're just going down whatever street he needs to take the car to sell. I've had some fun in the back of vehicles with no power, no power steering and it's like, all right, we're just going to say a prayer and hang on. Let's go. Oh my God. Oh my God. Yeah, that doesn't sound right at all. All right. Very good. Very good. Thank you, ma'am. Thank you. Yes, Tyler. Oh, this guy is towing a refrigerator, but he just attached it to the back of his sedan and is letting it drag along the high way. Is that dragging or is it on a dolly? No, it's dragging. It's dragging. Actually, the trunk is up so it is kind of in the trunk. Absolutely. That's good. Oh my goodness. You can spend a whole day. There goes. There goes. You know what my fear is? Is that it? No, no, it's going to flip the drive vehicle. So you just got to break. In this video, they're not towing a car. They're just towing a trailer. Yeah, trailer. Yeah. And the trailer comes loose and it's wiggling from. You know what that's like when you lose a car and a refrigerator and you're fishtailing, but you're going all like you can't get control and you're just fishtailing from side to side. This will scare you from ever wanting a driver's license. There are some idiots. It'll make you it'll make you think twice about driving. Telling things on the road. I'm going to I got to go quick. Hi, Yalia in the morning. Hey, Yalia, real quick. So when I was 16, my car broke down and my dad came to tow me back to our house and had a tow strap on my car. And what I didn't know at 16 is that you have to have the key turned on while the vehicles in neutral to be towed. Otherwise the steering wheel will lock. Yeah. The steering wheel locks up. Yeah. So we're going like 60 miles an hour down the highway. And we finally decide to turn off on the rural road like toward our house. Well, your dad did. We make this. Yeah, we make this right hand turn and everything is good except I keep making the right hand turn because my wheel is locked and my car ended up in a ditch. Love it. All right. Very good. Thank you, sir. Real quick. Yes, Todd from Lori. I shut down the key bridge once. Oh, no. I had a couch on a trailer flipped out the back off of the trailer shut the entire bridge down the toll facility came up and told me I could not put it back on myself. They had to do it. This is Julian Edelman from games with names. I want to take a second to talk about something that's personal to me. I've had the privilege of working closely with Robert Kraft for a long time and one thing I've always respected is how seriously he takes up standing up to hate as a Jewish athlete. My identity is something I am proud of, but I also know what it feels like to be singled out for it. That's why this new commercial for the blue square alliance against hate that aired during the big game really hit home. It's about showing up for someone when they're targeted, even if you don't have the perfect words and sometimes standing next to someone is enough and you can show support by sharing the blue square. What's up everyone? I'm a go vote of my next guest. It's will Farrell. My dad gave me the best advice ever. He goes just give it a shot.
