it's new year's eve which means in three days sim you are getting married holy shit I am getting married. Okay, okay. I've already got the playlist almost completely worked out. And I talked to the DJ six times. He knows what to play when. Plus, I volunteered to step in if needed. Uh, no, you're not going to step in to DJ? You're my maid of honor. Your only job that day is me. For everything else, we've got Clarissa, wedding planner extraordinaire. Clarissa should be canonized. What? You know, made into a saint. in this year of the Lord. Anyway, I can't believe the schedule Clarissa had waiting for me at check-in. Or the fact that she found a venue to seat 500 people. What can I say? I'm finally popular. Ha! And the schedule? Well, I wanted us to do everything. Hair and makeup, friend photos, stagette, symphony visit, and then, of course, like the usual wedding things. Here for it all. That's why you're my BFF! For life. Um, speaking of that very intense itinerary, I, um, noticed your brother isn't here until tomorrow. He's missing the family dinner? Oh, my God. Did I not tell you? He has a girlfriend. He's bringing her, but she's an oncologist. For kids. She can't be off rotation at the hospital for too many days, so they're coming tomorrow. Oh, a kid's cancer doctor? Wow, well, that's exactly the kind of person that seems like a great match for Peter. You think? My parents, of course, they love her. Lily the lifesaver, they say. But I think she's kind of a bitch. She's always talking about how great she is. Peter, he can't seem to see it. But also, everyone in the world thinks that he's so great now, too. So maybe they're just a match made in the heavens. Right. Probably. Izzy, the hotel told me you checked in. I hope you like the room and the gift bag. Did you see your schedule? I've color-coded all of your events. Thank you, Clarissa. Yes, and wow. Great. Well, I believe we have a problem, Miss Lucas. Your brother is arriving early and with news. Oh? Did he and Lily the Lifesaver break up? Do we have to rearrange the tables? Ugh, why would he do that? Couldn't they just have pretended? They might be breaking up. Oh, no, no, no, no. I don't think this is that. If you could all please come with me, it seems family cocktails are going to be starting a little bit earlier. I'm not dressed. Right, of course. Your brother, though, is insisting. Okay, well, is it his wedding weekend? Right, absolutely not. Of course. I'll tell him to meet in the bar in two hours. Izzy, if you could hold back while Sam goes upstairs. Just a few last-minute questions. I can't believe Peter is trying to ruin my wedding. Ever since he became famous, he's just become so insensitive. Ugh. Iz, I will see you there. Bye. Bye. Hi, Izzy. Well, you know how it's my job to make sure nothing goes wrong of any sort, ever. And I get paid a lot to do that, right? Yes. What is it? Oh my God, is something wrong with the dress? Oh, no, no, absolutely not. The dress is fine. I love the dress. Three women are steaming it and scenting it as we speak. Scenting? Um, okay, so what is it? Her parents, her brother, cancellations, no DJ, what? Actually, this is about you. What? I believe that at some point in the past few years, you and her brother had a relationship. Um. What? How? Oh, please. It's more common than you think. Best friend, hot, rich, famous brother, all that. I checked into things. But I need to make sure it will not impact the wedding. You're not planning anything foolish, right? How could you even... No. No one knows. Oh, I am very thorough. So now someone knows. Is this going to be a problem? No, no. Peter and I... We... I will always love Peter very much, but in the end, I decided not to jeopardize my friendship with Sam for something that could never work. It was only a few weeks long in L.A. when we both lived there. He was hurt, but clearly he's moved on. Lily. The lifesaver. But have you. You know what? I need to go check on the playlists. I assume you were not bringing this up to Sam? Peter and I were young and it was brief. That doesn't answer my question. Uh-huh. Yeah, I live back in Boston again. Where Sam and I lived before she became such a cello celebrity. Yes, it's lovely that both of our children have gone on to such great heights. We really didn't know if Peter would. He was such an odd child. Samantha always thought that you'd go on to do something great, and yet I heard you've quit the radio business. Oh, Mom, do you have a new plan for your career? I'm, uh, figuring it out. Radio was different than I thought. But she's gonna do something amazing, too. I can see it. And also, look who just walked in. Peter! Lily! You're here early. You're never early. But it's great! Mom! Sam! Izzy? I didn't know you would be here. At your sister's wedding? No, here. Right now. Yes, as Peter requested, the champagne goes right there. If I had known, I wouldn't have- Oh! Champagne! Well, you didn't have to do that, Petey. But I will not say no. I'd really rather have the champagne in an hour or so. Toasts are just so much better when it dark outside Well I think we gonna want it now Mom Dad Sam Izzy I got news to share Really? On my wedding weekend? Well, I want to do it when we're all together and with your schedule, who knows when that will be. Oh, oh my God. Well, you all know Lily and love her. And she's pregnant. And we're getting married. I'm going to be your sister. Ah! Oh, my gosh. Well, wow, wow, wow. Congratulations. It's happening. Both my babies. We are over the moon, right, honey? Honey, right? Isn't that great, Izzy? Uh, yes. So wonderful. Great. Congratulations to you both. I'm sure you'll be next, Izzy. Also, please meet Lily. You two are going to love each other. So nice to meet you, Lily. Lily, I'm sure anyone Peter has decided to marry is great. Thank you. Peter said so many wonderful things about you. A radio DJ. He said that you think of your job like being a music wizard. He did. You do? Well, years ago, when I romanticized it all, um, I'm so sorry, but I'm suddenly feeling a bit funny. Given you have so much to celebrate with the family, maybe I'll just rest and come back for dessert. You are our family. But if you're feeling ill, maybe Clarissa can help. We don't want you getting us all sick. Maybe just rest for a bit? Gavin will be joining us, and you know how much he loves you. Of course. Can't wait to see the groom. Shouldn't he be here now? Not back from golfing with the other groomsmen, which I'm certain means drinking. They're all dying to meet you, is? So, maybe a small break, and then right back for dinner? Yes, of course. Can't wait to meet the groomsmen. You okay? Mm-hmm. I'm just a little lightheaded. You told me this wouldn't be a problem It's not, Clarissa So you just feel sick now? Suddenly? Probably the travel I just need a minute Well, you have 35 minutes No more Get yourself together And then you've got to be there for your best friend She's more like my sister, actually Even more important, then Besides, Peter really would never be a match for you, right? That sort of man needs a woman at his level. Really? And I'm just... I'm not a pediatric oncologist from a very old-money Canadian family. Maybe you should consider flirting with that groomsman, Antoine. Take your mind off it. Huh. Right. Noted. I'll be back shortly. Where is that card? Where would you put it is? You always carry it. Come on, find it. It's the card. The only non-birthday card from mom. The emergency card. Come on. Okay, okay, think. Normally, I keep it in my purse. The small pocket. Not there. I remember putting it in my luggage for safekeeping. Crap, where is it? This is an emergency. The man I may be still a little bit, a lot a bit secretly in love with is becoming a father. And he's getting married? To Lily the lifesaver? I don't have a job. I'm not getting married. Where is the love of my life? What if it's... What if it's him? What if I've messed everything up? Come on. Where is the damn card? You'd better have something up your sleeve, Mom. I put a lot on the line because of your wedding prediction and... Okay, okay. Come on, Mom. Advice. I need advice. Hey there, little Flora Moon. Uh-oh. The emergency card. What's happened? Let me guess, you became a groupie and have been following your favorite band for a year and have no money left? You finally adopted all those neighborhood dogs? Have quit your job and want to move to the country? Someone showed up claiming to be your dad? Oh, I hope not. Maybe at a one-night stand or pregnant and falling right in my shoes. Oh, I don't know. I have no idea when you'll open this. But I think all emergencies are basically solved in three ways. One, you are loved. Never forget that. Two, you can do hard things. You've already done so many. You've lost your mom, after all. Sorry, gallows humor. Three, money. Turn the card over. I've taped a credit card here. It's $5,000, baby. I hope it's enough to get you out of the jam. I love you. Mom, thank you. But I don't think money will solve this. Oh, P.S. Spend it irresponsibly. Sometimes the best way to approach a crisis is to run away. We always find something when we find ourselves someplace new. Gosh, you were always so... you. Always. Is that what I'm supposed to do? Run away? No, but not today, at least. Not now. Not until after the wedding. Okay, first I have to change. Go to dinner. Maybe drink a martini. And watch Peter falling in love. Peter, who I didn't choose. Peter, who I pushed away because I thought there might be someone better. There will be someone better, right? Maybe someone in Fiji or Madagascar, Paris. Hell, maybe I'll go to Paris. Somewhere, anywhere. I just have to make it through this wedding weekend. And my 35 minutes are up Here we go I mean, I am happy about Peter, but did he have to propose three days before my wedding? Right? Totally! How insensitive! Also, do you think he proposed because she's pregnant? No way. He's been talking about proposing to her when I saw him like two months ago. He bought the ring this summer, in August, like, sometime around your birthday. Oh, cool. Well, a cheers to them both. Uh, what are we cheersing to? Uh, Samantha and Gavin, the bride and groom. And you, the next set. Although, you couldn't have waited a week. I couldn't have. Lily has been getting terrible morning sickness, and if we weren't engaged and Mom found out she was pregnant, it would have been worse for your wedding. Oh, Mom would have been fine. Seriously. But shit, shit, shit, shit. I've got to get those pearls off her before she goes to sleep. I need them for tomorrow for the bridal breakfast. Do you think Mom is still awake? It's like almost midnight. If she's not still in the bar, Mom's fast asleep in her room. Okay, well, I have to try. My outfit requires pearls. Izzy? do you want to come? Um, I don't mind grabbing a drink if you want to stay out. I'm not sure Izzy needs another drink. Izzy will be fine. I'll finish this if you want to stay while I drink it, Peter, by all means, do as you please. You always have. Uh, okay. See you at 7 30 for hair and makeup. And don't forget, tomorrow we wear baby pink. Yep. Baby pink. How could I forget? Baby pink. You hate baby pink. Well, it's not my wedding. Long time no see. You look great. Shut up. I guess Boston agrees with me. Look out, anything is better than LA. You know, I'm thinking of going to Paris. I can send you all my favorite spots. Oh, sure. Yeah, that'd be nice. Yeah, of course. You know, if there's anything I can do for you, Izzy, I'll always want to. Um, well, uh, thanks, but congratulations. Bartender, let's get this man a drink. We need to cheers to his engagement. Look, I didn't want to tell you like that. I just didn't expect you to be at the family dinner. It's not a big deal, really. I mean, why would it be? Champagne. We need champagne, right? Champagne is fine. He is. Uh, you know what, actually, I should just go. Early morning tomorrow, 7.30. I'll see you at the rehearsal dinner, yeah? Is, do you want to talk about this? And your drink is still full. Not anymore. Wow. Um, can we talk? Talk about what? Samantha, the wedding, the weather? No, about how we had a really great month in L.A. and then you decided it was over and you haven't talked to me or called me or made any over to see me for the past three years. Peter, you moved back to Paris and now Montreal. all. It was never going to work out. You knew that. Come on. Is it the prophecy again? No. You're my best friend's brother and I didn't want to have this exact kind of awkward conversation at the wedding where we're surrounded by dozens of people who know you. That's why. I had to move on. Of course. I'm, uh, going I'm going to bed now. Early morning. Good night, Peter. I have never understood the point of a rehearsal dinner. It's like a pre-wedding. I think that is the point. Excuse me. Hi. Hi. The bride's talking. Hi. I'm so excited that you are all here for my wedding weekend. I promise to make this the best wedding of not just mine, but everyone's life. And before I get there, I just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone here. Clarissa, of course, wedding planner extraordinaire. My parents, I mean, have you seen this place? And lastly, my two best friends in the entire world. My brother Peter and my best friend, but truly my almost sister. Isabel, without you two, none of this would be possible. Ah, really, it's nothing. Our absolute pleasure. A great big happy family, yay! Okay, I've got one last little surprise for our maid of honor and what I'm calling my bro of honor. It's a new title, but Peter would have looked funny in a dress. And, well, yes, we do have almost a soccer team of a bridal party, but it's worth it. To get to know the team a little better, Gavin and I have created a rapid-fire Q&A. Great! Love this! Woo! Have fun! Okay, we're gonna start with you, Izzy. Favorite holiday. Fourth of July. The fireworks. Wrong. Your birthday. Because you still feel connected to your mom. But you're too scared to admit it because you know those cards are gonna run out. Favorite music. Anything with a good beat. Strike two. Patti Smith's horses, but you don't think anyone would know that, and you're placating them. You're keeping up appearances. Stop it. What are you doing? Ever been in love? Sure, of course. And have you met the one? Not yet, but if you know a trombone player, send him my way. Wrong. But you were too scared to admit it. Peter, you were the one getting married. You got a woman pregnant, so what are you even doing? I'm just making sure that you know that even with that shiny radio voice on, someone can still see you. I need air. I need air. Damn, it was hard to find you. Are you doing okay? I am so sorry. I didn't know your wedding would be so big for me. I just so so happy for you But also it making me want to cry every five minutes and I don want to ruin the makeup you spend so much money on Oh my god Hans stop it We have money I can ruin the pictures. You would never ruin the pictures. You are my favorite thing in this whole world. Don't tell Gavin that, but you are. But are you sure that you're okay? Totally, yeah. Um, just limiting the tears by standing in the 20 degree weather in a strapless gown and open-toed heels. Why did I decide to get married on New Year's Eve? Because you love a party and more than anything, you love the promise of a start of a new year. Scene. Hey, why is Peter being so weird around you? What? I mean, well, he's Peter, so. Right, totally fine. I must be imagining things. Okay, also, the groomsmen, do you have your eye on anyone? You know, a New Year's Eve kiss, a fling. Oh, I, uh. I like Paul, But Stephen is taller. Now, I don't know why, but I think Antoine seems like he'd be really good in bed. I think it's because he has a tongue ring. Oh my god, no. Ew, no tongue rings. Well, they've all been asking about you. The cute American girl. Maybe there's something there. Flirt with one of them. Just at least one, please. It's my wedding. Well, that's a hell of a card to pull. Fine, but not Antoine. Tongue rings? Gross. And tomorrow, for now, I'm going to bed. Tomorrow's the big day. Places, everyone! Izzy, you and Peter will be the last in right before the bride. It's finally happening. Okay? Samantha's cousin and Gavin's fifth-grade roommate. And one, two, three! How are you feeling, Sam? At peace. Gavin is the love of my life. I love you so much, and I'm so happy for you. I love you more. Izzy, please stop hugging the bride. Get up here next to Peter. I do not want to have to fix that woman's face again. Right. Hey. You look like a movie star in that dress. Thank you. Sam picked it out. Quiet, please. If you could hold onto Peter's arm now, Izzy, closer together, like you like each other at the very least. Huh. What? I remember another time you didn't want to get closer to me. That be on a roof deck. My birthday. Maybe. I wanted to marry you that day. And now you have Lily the lifesaver. Shh! And now down the aisle! It's nice to walk with you. Peter, you can't say things like that. You're getting married, about to be a dad. Don't be that guy. I can always regret that it didn't work out, Izzy. You can too. But regret doesn't mean that I didn't have to move on. And why are you doing this now? People are watching. Your mom is watching. Hey, man. Gavin, welcome to the family. See you at the reception is. I hear there's a bet amongst the groomsmen on who can get you to dance. so Antoine you know Gavin because of college roommates he was the most eager beaver of any college student I had ever seen for classes that's hard to believe oh no for parties he did fine in school but his parents own a sports team he's never going to need to work so it was more like a thing he did rather than a thing he needed to do. Ah, and you? My parents own a gas station. I rented this suit. I will always have to work. Nice fit for a rental. Thanks. Clarissa picked it out. Of course she did. Hey, do you want to dance? I'm more of a listen-to-the-music type of person. Sure. But if I get you to dance, I win the bet. It's $100. A hundred? Wow. Was there a pool or something? Well, Peter was certain you wouldn't dance with anyone. He said he'd only ever seen you dance once or twice in all the time that he's known you. Did he now? Well, maybe we should then. Show them all that they don't know us the way they think they do. Hey, so I heard a rumor about you that you have a tongue ring, but I don't see one. Would that make you want to dance longer? Ew, no. I mean, no offense. Yeah, no, none taken. I had one at 16. I thought girls would like it, but then I got really into, um, okay, this is embarrassing. Okay, now you have to tell me. Okay, okay. Fine. I got really good at the trombone, and I had to take it out because it gets in the way of the tongue articulation needed to hit the notes. You play the trombone? Yeah, it's weird, I know, but I was actually semi-professional for a while. And then I got serious about life. I got into teaching, got married, divorced. I have a daughter. Head first. Fast. As if your skin is on fire. You do? Yeah, most women our age are much less impressed by that. In fact, it's usually a buzzkill. Look, I know this is random, but... Do you want to go to Paris with me? Right now? Yeah, or, well, maybe we should wait till they got the cake, so I guess tomorrow? I'll pay for it. It's a gift from, um, my mom. Ace, Antoine, keep a little room for God there, right? Antoine and I are going to Paris. Leaving in the morning, actually. He plays the trombone, professionally. Really? Yep. What a hell of a wedding, right? Izzy isn't anything, like you said. And hell yeah, Paris. Well, I guess she isn't. Surprise. Come on, let's keep dancing.
