But then we had Tennessee quarterback Joey Aguilar. He was denied his injunction for what he was arguing for a fourth year of D1 football. Then we had G League center Charles Bediaco play five games for Alabama, was denied a motion and an appeal to try to play out the rest of the season. So we'll open it up, guys. Do you feel like common sense maybe is starting to come back when it comes to rulings and college eligibility? I think it kind of the guardrails held up. If you looked at the eligibility and the common sense that was already there, it happened. I understand that everybody thought that you were going to get these shade tree judges and they were just going to rubber stamp it and all of that. But the player Trinidad Chambliss that should have been eligible got his eligibility. And the two players that was very iffy did not get their eligibility. And I guess now we're going to move on to see if Chandler Morris gets his seventh year of eligibility. And we'll see which state judge can say about that. But I think the guardrails did what they were supposed to do. Yeah, you know, for an Alabama guy, I've never been one that really strongly felt Charles Mediaco should be playing college basketball. I didn't believe that at the beginning. I don't believe it now. My issue had been the arbitrary nature of what the NCAA decides. As an example, I know on the surface, everyone just looks at the outcome of cases and says, well, that's good or bad based on what they think the outcome should be. And when Betty Aco was denied his eligibility, what a lot of people miss because they don't dig into what actually happens at the hearings. Betty Aco was relying on the Baylor case. It was the first case cited in his motion asking the court to make him eligible. and the NCAA's position in court about the Baylor case was that was a mistake. We shouldn't have done that. We shouldn't have done that. They opened the door to these type of challenges by making their own admitted mistakes. It's not Charles Bediaco that's a bad guy or Alabama that's the bad guy. It's the NCAA's arbitrary nature of deciding such things. Now, should Charles Bediaco should be playing college basketball? No, not my opinion. I'm an Alabama guy. But it's the NCAA. It's their issue that prevents Chambliss from, you know, a situation where he clearly should have been entitled to his medical red shirt three or four years ago. Didn't happen then. Now it's a problem now. Again, that's the NCAA and their arbitrary nature of deciding such things. That's the problem. If they didn't set these precedents and make these admitted mistakes, you probably wouldn't have this scenario. He probably would not have shot his shot against the NCAA in trying to get that eligibility. He got a temporary injunction. He played. Nobody blames Betty Yaco. I mean, if he gets a chance to do it, they're going to say yes. Why not, right? Joey Aguilar, if they're going to give me a chance, why not? You know, Trinidad Chambliss went through an unnecessary – you guys are spot on with that. He went through an unnecessary lengthy battle to get what was already entitled to him because he came from Division II to Division I, which why there's a great difference in the medical redshirt process if it's the same organization, the NCAA, why is it different in Division II than it is Division I as far as obtaining a medical redshirt? I don't get that either. But, again, I think all in all things, this Chandler Morris case will be interesting to kind of see where that falls. I'm very intrigued by that. But, you know, I think the ones, they got it right. They didn't just blanket it, which I thought they were going to do. I thought they were just going to blanket and say, all right, Betty Aco, you're good. All right, Aguilar, you're good. Anybody who wants to come back, you're good. LeBron, hell, if you want to come play for Ohio State, you're good too. Hey, sign me up for that. That would be kind of cool, actually. I don't know. It would be kind of fun to see him in the NCAA tournament. It's just a LeBron reel for one shining moment. I think it would be cool if he played football. Oh, yeah. That would be cool too. I did. Sure. We should add to Owen Heineke over at Oklahoma. He was denied his waiver. He had an issue where he played, I think, lacrosse or something his freshman year. Yeah, played three games, and they're counting that as a full year. I don't know. Again, I – I like that, too. Like, you play a different sport. Yeah, I mean, how many quarterbacks did we have in the 90s? Like, played baseball, got drafted in the Major League Baseball, went and played in the minors for a couple years, and then came back to college. I mean, Nick Saban had it with Booty and then Matt Mock, who ended up coming and winning the national championship. One of those guys won a Heisman. His name is Chris Winkie. He was like 29 years old in college. He's like two years younger than the quarterbacks that are playing right now. Yeah, but it's interesting, though, guys, because I think, you know, look, it's exciting to get a big name back for college football. It's going to be awesome to watch Trinidad Chambliss and see what he does this year. but I think from like just reading our comments and most of our listeners and people out there the overwhelming trend is you got four years move on like I think that's what most of our listeners are kind of saying to a lot of these guys and so that's where I say I'm not saying I'm saying some of these other guys I think that's where I say it feels like common sense is starting to come back at least in these courtroom rulings to go all right bro you've done enough move on well just give them five years and let's let's just move on with it just set a blanket. Hey, you got five years unless something crazy happens. And you know, Charles Betiaco's case, it's Charles Betiaco and his lawyer. It's not Alabama and their lawyers. This is Charles Betiaco and his lawyer that is trying to gain eligibility. I think Nate Oates position at Alabama isn't so much, Hey, y'all are crazy. Charles should be playing. I really think the point that Nate Oates is making is why are we letting 25, 26, 27 year old European pros play? Why is that happening? Can we put an end to all of that? I think if you ask Nate Oates privately what he'd like to see here, it's the end of that as opposed to, hey, Charles should play. Now, he is taking the position Charles should play because Charles is his guy. Charles is in school at Alabama. He's going to graduate from Alabama. He's practicing as a student with the team. But in the end, I think what Nate Oates would like to see is these older Europeans that have been pros for years at whatever level of pro ball they're playing at home. I think he would like to see some reins or some guardrails put on that. Can you imagine if Tony Kukoc went to UCLA instead of the Bulls coming out of Pennsylvania? That's a deep cut. I was going to throw here two guys just kind of tied into this conversation when we talk about the kid at Kansas. was a Darren Peterson he they having some issues where basically he like taking nights off oh he sick tonight all this and he highly highly paid in NIL and all that Like what do you think is going to happen here with the evolution of NIL Like, you can't put forth a good effort in a contract. So, like, it's a weird Pandora's box we're opening from that realm too. Yeah, they need to get rid of – this is trickle down from load management in the NBA. That's what's happening. Now, all of a sudden, a college schedule of 35, 40 games, that's going to be too taxing on bodies as well. And people that just don't want to play doesn't play. And the NBA has to get the load management under control. So it doesn't trickle down for long. You're going to have junior college quarterbacks needing to take a night off. You know, that's what we're looking at. Yeah. It's the load management thing. Don't get me started on that. That's, that's a bunch of crap. But yeah, that, that, I don't know how you really know how you police that. I guess you have to put some language in the NIL contract that says, hey, you've got to play this amount of games. But you can't. Barring injury. I don't know. There's some way they could sneak that in there, I'm sure. They've got some lawyers and they've got some legal people and contract writers. They could probably throw something in there that would prevent just taking a night off. Now, obviously, injury is injury. But there's got to be some way to do it. I mean, I'm sure there is. I'm not creative enough to come up with that myself. But I'm sure there's something in there. Ole Miss hasn't had really opt outs in bowl games because there's some kind of language in their NIL contracts that incentivizes playing that game. Maybe there's some sort of a bonus or something like that. Maybe you can set it up to where you have appearance essential fees to where if you cross a threshold, maybe it gets cut a little bit. I don't know. maybe bonuses paid, you know, maybe, maybe bonus paid at the end of the year, post bowl game. So if you don't play in the bowl game, you don't get the bonus. You know, I think that would make, you know, it's all, you know, it's all contractual or it should be all contractual. I just wonder if it's not contractual. Is it only a matter of time before let's say someone's quarterback out there says in a November non-conference game, a lot of the SEC teams play these FCS games in November when a quarterback says, hey, you know, I'm entering the draft when the season's over. I'm just not going to play against UT Chattanooga. You'll have to find someone else. I mean, I think that's similar to what's going on with maybe a couple of basketball players. Well, that's what I was going to bring up because they're saying the reason Peterson's sitting out is to avoid injury. He's projected to be the number one pick in the NBA draft, so he doesn't want to mess with his draft stock. But I'm going like, you're not at like 500 Rutgers. You're at Kansas, who's one of the best teams in the country like you know it's you got a plenty to play for here but it's it's an interesting thought because I had that too like you think of let's say South Carolina struggles next year and Lenore Sellers there I don't know sub 500 and with three games left he goes you know what I'm shutting this down I saw the mock drafts I'm supposed to go top half of the first round I'm done you know and then what happens there how do you control that it's not crazy to think it's not crazy to think it's going to happen as a matter of fact feels sort of inevitable really But I think Stephen's right about this can be addressed by the collectives and their deals with the players where they just simply don't get paid unless they play. Yeah, I mean, incentives, bonuses, things like that. I mean, it's all what's written in the language of the contract. And if you allow it, if you don't cover that, then if it happens, you know, it happens. We're in the mercenary era of college football. And if you don't start acting like it's the mercenary era of college football, you're going to get bitten by it. And then probably have a press conference and go on and on about someone killing the players. I can't imagine who would do that. I don't know. We'll need plenty of Jimmy Stein legal minds out there to write up that. Billing hours out the wazoo. Since I retired from law practice, by the way, hourly rate has gone way up oh there you go uh how many se you heard it uh greg sankey if you want to call jimmy uh how many sec teams will get into the ncaa tournament the sec squad talking more ball next i'm clea butler host of locked on women's basketball and this is mazda's women's basketball snapshot celebrating the work no highlight reel can ever capture south carolina rolled past Ole Miss 85-48 to clinch a share of the SEC regular season title and locked down the number one seed in the conference tournament. The Gamecocks extended their win streak over Ole Miss to 21 straight. UCLA dominated Wisconsin 80-60 to secure its first outright Big Ten regular season championship in program history. The Bruins improved to 27-1 overall and remain unbeaten in conference play. And number 12 TCU stormed back from a 13.4th quarter deficit to beat Iowa State 80-73. The Horned Frogs now sit alone atop the Big 12 standings and are one win away from clinching another regular season conference crown. Joe Linardi, his latest Brock-atology, he still thinks, as of Monday, still thinks 11 SEC teams will get into the NCAA tournament. What say you guys? I believe him. Even though Vanderbilt is, for Vanderbilt's sake, even though they're kind of on a bit of a skid, I think they're in, I think Georgia's in, you know, Kentucky's, let's list them out, Kentucky, Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas did I say Georgia? I think I said Georgia I think I'm at 7 Florida, Texas Florida, Texas A&M that's 10 and then who's the 11th? Auburn I said Auburn Tennessee there's 11 the only way Ole Miss is getting in is that there's a watch party at Buffalo Wild Wings that's the only March Madness experience they're going to have this year I think I'm not going to argue with Joey brackets. I mean, you know, if Lenardi says 11, I'm going to believe it's 11. I would just say that Missouri, Auburn, there's still time for a couple of SEC teams to play their way out. So 11 isn't guaranteed by any stretch of the imagination. But, hey, if Lenardi says 11, I believe it. You see there on the bracketology, you know, Mizzou last four in, Auburn, Auburn and even A&M. A&M didn't have a tough non-con part, November and December. I don't think they earned a lot of points there. And they fizzled a little bit late, but they're probably fairly safe. But teams like Auburn, Missouri, maybe even Georgia, there's still time to play their way out, but I don't believe that's what's going to happen. I think as of right now, you see all 11 in. Yeah, unless your three 10-seeds and 11-seeds go on a massive losing streak, I find it hard to believe. I love seeing Vanderbilt sitting there at a five-seed. That's going to be fun right there. Three SEC teams on that five line would make me nervous as heck historically speaking in that tournament That a tough that a tough I mean not only do you end up playing a four if you get past the 12 which as we know those of us who watch the tournament every year, the five getting past the 12 is no sure thing. But then you play a four and you get past all that, then you get a one. I mean, the five seed is not ideal for long-term advancement. But, hey, being in is still a big deal while they're allowing just 68 and before the NCAA gets their way. And now there's 140 teams in or whatever it is they want to do. But making the tournament itself is still a difficult thing to do. You know, 350 teams, top 68. That's, you know, that's tough. But the SEC is an excellent basketball conference right now. There's no question about that. Yeah, and those teams like Georgia and Auburn, who I kind of was – I had teetering, and I thought Auburn was going to get out. Man, did they get lucky with that one over Kentucky last weekend. The one-point win, if they had lost that one, I think I probably would have had Auburn out. But you look at who they have remaining. Auburn's got Ole Miss and LSU, both very winnable, before they finish at Alabama to finish the season. And then Georgia, they've got South Carolina and at Mississippi State still, very winnable in Alabama. so they got Vandy as well well this that's that we're we're this is airing after that game's already been played Corey so that's why they're got they already lost so but you know but like that this is the strength of of you know the conference of like you you need wins to gut it to gut out here in the last two weeks if you do it you're going to be in I just a few months ago guys the way the SEC started non-conference play and everything I just thought there's no way they get 11 teams in, but it's wild. It looks like they're getting a little bit of a carryover respect from last year. I think some of the strength of the league too, guys, is look who's out. I mean, games in Starkville, games at Oxford, go play Oklahoma in Norman, play LSU in Baton Rouge, or even South Carolina in Columbia. Those are not gimme wins. Those aren't gimme wins for anyone else in the league. Top to bottom, the league's very good. The SEC's made a heavy investment in basketball. I think going back to the inception of the SEC Network, really, when everyone had a lot more money to play with, a lot of schools went heavy investing in basketball. And I think over the course of two, three, five, six years, the SEC is as good as any conference in the sport. Well, thanks to the SEC Network, they're doing the same in baseball. Teams are investing in baseball, the stadium experiences. They want their stadiums looking good for TV. And so it's kind of a trickle-down effect through all the sports that SEC Network airs. And with SEC Network Plus, now you might start to see some of the ancillary sports as well that don't get the main TV time. But now we'll be on SEC Network Plus. They might start improving, too. Yeah, Ole Miss softball just built a new stadium, basically just for optics and what it would look like and things like that. I think Ole Miss softball last year had a losing record in the league and made it to the Women's College World Series. That sounds like something that happens in the baseball World Series. Hey, it's something that can happen with SEC basketball, too. I mean, you don't have to win the SEC to have a team capable of getting to the Final Four. That's just how competitive the league is. In 2022, Ole Miss was the last team in the tournament, and they won the national title. We should give some love, too, to the women's side of things. How about Dawn Staley? South Carolina winning the SEC regular season championship, the fifth straight SEC regular season title for them. The SEC is going to have a lot of good women's teams ranked in the top 25. They're going to get a lot of teams punched into the postseason. But, I mean, that is nothing short of phenomenal. In the era of, you know, Geno Ariema and what he built at UConn and all this, what Dawn Staley's built there in South Carolina is absolutely ridiculous. Vanderbilt sitting there is tied for second in the league there. Mikayla Blakes is one of the best players in the country. She's had 10 30 point games for the first time this century. Yeah, because of the because of the ice storm, Ole Miss had four top 25 games where they played top 25 teams in the span of a week, four games in a week. They have no legs right now. None. Describing Dawn Staley as a Hall of Fame coach isn't isn't accurate enough. She should have her own wing, you know, whatever, whatever, however many halls of fame she enters. She, she's unbelievable. And to me is sort of the face of the sport itself and women's college basketball. The consistency really, really amazing, but women's college basketball in the SEC, very, very strong. Again, you don't have to be at the very top of the league to be highly competitive nationally. And guess what? Everybody's going to be around the SEC is asking Dawn Staley. Hey, Dawn, it's such a great career when you're retiring. Like, please go away. She is this generation's Pat Summit. Yeah. Dawn, you look a little tired. Should you want to go to the beach, you know, go to the tire? Like, be nice, right? You know, do you need this? That was the, so Kim Mulkey at LSU, she's obviously been tremendous as well. and somebody brought up, I think, since she's been at LSU, she's not beating Dawn Staley. And somebody was asking me, like, man, what do you think of that? Kim Mulkey hasn't beaten her. I said, do me a favor and go look at how many games Dawn Staley's lost in the last four years. It's like four. Like, she doesn't lose. So, you know, it's just to say she's got somebody's number. She's got everyone's number. No one can beat her. It's kind of like, what's your record against prime Nick Saban? Oh, you can't win that. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, Hugh Freeze did it twice. everybody's like oh my god he's the greatest coach ever give him a job yeah he got like three after that because of that uh when we return guys you get one question what would it be we're going to talk about that next more squad talking about more ball hey first guys the biggest stretch uh the college basketball season's almost here the buzzer beaters bracket busters was unforgettable moments that everyone's talking about the next day if you want to be there live for something like that that's bucket list stuff the hard part is actually getting tickets long queues prices jumping up surprise fees at checkout the game time app they give fans the advantage with constant innovation it's how you unlock amazing tickets and experiences in just a few taps it's incredibly easy to use game time guarantee means 100 legitimate tickets delivered on time at the best price and here's the best part fees are included in the price you see what you see is what you pay period the seat view feature is a game changer you can see a panoramic view from your exact seat before you buy. All right, fellas, as we head into our final segment here, I did want to kind of throw this out here, have a little bit of fun. But our buddy in the industry, Josh Pate, he made some headlines this past week as he got a sit-down interview with the president. and we won't get into the topic or any of that, but it just got me thinking. If you had a chance to sit down with whoever the president is, don't even name a name, just President X, you could sit down with them, ask anything regarding college football right now, what would it be? Keep in mind, we've got NIL. We've got all this different stuff. Everybody's crying for Congress to get involved. It's the wild, wild west. What would be the one thing you like to bring up to the commander in chief Can you help us name a commissioner And let let go with the first one being Nick Saban That that's what I would roll with. Let's, let's find a commissioner. Let's find a way to make this thing unified. So we get unified scheduling policies on NIL transfer portal calendar stuff, just unified because the conferences are just kind of their own islands and they're not really talking to each other and you get a format that hey the commissioner says this is the format of the playoff this is the format of this that and the other bam no no debates i would like to see an executive order that bans the idea that a series of two-point plays can decide the outcome of a football game so i'll take an executive order uh banning that but seriously i mean if i had a serious question to ask uh any any president about about the current situation I only see two paths to making some sense out of the chaos, and that's either congressional action that institutes laws, antitrust laws, anything that just is a congressional overreaching federal law that imposes some sanity on 50 states doing 50 different things, or collective bargaining with what amounts to a new college athlete union, I would ask the president, is the NCAA and college sports wasting their time going to Congress for a solution? And if so, should they just focus on maybe collective bargaining as a way to solve all this? Yeah, mine would be I would reach out to the president and say, hey, can you help me destroy the NCAA? We need to get rid of this old system and build something up for modern football instead of trying to retrofit something that Newt Rockne used back in the day to fit your need. Make something actually designed for this new era of college football. The NCAA is not it. It's time that the Congresses take back control of the conferences and you have the ACC, the SEC and all those guys making decisions. and just do it like baseball did back in the day whenever they had the reserve calls. They started, hey, we're going to do the reserve calls. Let them collude together a little bit on the contracts and the way they're going to be looked at. But get rid of the NCAA. All they are is in the death throes and trying to stay relevant. They're 10 years left at tops. Get rid of them now. Yeah, it will be interesting to see what all happens. But I just I mean, look, when when when you got schools like coaches like Kirby Smart and Mike Elko calling for, you know, we need Congress to get involved here. It's like, wow, I mean, it's they really want somebody to step in and take take a hold of this. And then it's kind of funny the other day when I hear Steve Sarkeesian talking about, you know, our guys actually go to class here. And somebody said, wait, is he calling him student athletes? I haven't heard that about five years. Like it's it's crazy that we forget they're still going to class and school is still part of all this. somehow, allegedly, I guess. Yeah. Unless you're Carson Beck when you haven't been to class in like three years, apparently. One more thing I'll add in here, guys. I don't know if you saw this. Ross Dellinger sent out, he said in a memo set to NCAA schools, VP of Enforcement, John Duncan, announced that the D1 Board of Directors has charged the staff to pursue significant penalties for tampering violations while also more publicly announcing cases and reminded schools about the tampering bylaw. I mean, is this all just kind of like boogeyman? I think it's ridiculous. I get the dabos were incensed and all this, but it's going to continue to happen. Trying to play big, bad guy. Oh, we're going to enforce this. Okay, good luck. If you read that tweet, what he actually said, it's almost identical to what the U.S. government said whenever they enforced prohibition back in the day. It's that type of stuff. It's never going to be enforced. This basically is the prohibition statement made all over for tampering. It's like, hey, any conversation with an athlete's interest, that's tampering, and you will get penalized. Okay, buddy. Sure. Okay. It's extremely difficult to enforce because, I mean, what is tampering? For instance, what if you got your eye on, hypothetically, an outside linebacker at Kansas, and that's kind of who you'd like to have on your football team is a tampering to call his high school coach and just mentioned casually that you have a big need for a senior outside linebacker transfer. And you just mentioned that casually, knowing that high school coach is going to call his old player and say, hey, I think X school would really like you to enter the poor. I mean, is that tampering? It's just it's extremely difficult to enforce other than the most obvious cases. But still, I think it's too big. I think it's like enforcing speeding where if everyone's driving, you know, 56, you get a ticket. I mean, it's just going to be very difficult to enforce. And also, real quick, if they decide right now to go back and punish people that tampered before this memo got sent, it's going straight to court because you can't up the penalties. You can't up the rules after the event has transpired. We talk about the selective enforcement of the NCAA. this would be an example for them to try and make an example out of somebody Ole Miss but that's what they do whenever Ole Miss gets good here comes the NCAA to selectively enforce something and that's the way it's worked for a hundred years and it's not going to stop well somebody brought this up to me most of these players have agents NIL reps and like let's say I don't know give me give me a coach let's say Kalen DeBoer is talking with Nate Jacobs from XYZ NIL company, and he's working out a deal for, let's say, to retain Austin Mack. Hey, we want to get this deal done. We want to keep Austin Mack. And then he goes, hey, you know what? I also noticed on your roster you got that linebacker at Florida State. Hey, you think you'd have any interest coming to Alabama? Well, I don't know. Let me put a feeler out. He's not in the portal, but I can kind of put a feeler out. Is that tampering? That's a great example of how difficult it is to enforce. Is that tampering? You could argue it is. You could argue it isn't. It's agents talking to each other. They're just talking to their players about possibilities. I mean, they probably do that without even talking to each other. They're probably like, hey, listen, you should probably get in the portal because, you know, like Alabama. And all the players, no other players. When you go to your own linebacker that's friends with a safety at Maryland, I mean, is that tampering? I mean, these kids, they talk to each other at these other schools literally daily. Because they play seven-on-seven together or against each other. and they send messages on Instagram. They probably get together and play Call of Duty and they're chatting over the headphones. Hey, bro, you should get in the portal and come play with us. I think a lot of fans would be shocked to know how many players from other schools are on your campus all the time partying, hanging out with their former high school teammate. They're literally on your campus on their own free time. There's nothing wrong with that. It's been going on forever. But now it might be seen as tampering. tampering yeah um people um were dming me and it's like hey austin simmons is at miami it's like well he's from bahokie he probably has a bunch of friends that are going down to miami he's like is he going to miami no he's not going to miami he's just that's friends yeah yeah i was gonna say if they wanted to force tampering start with the kids that entered the portal with a do not contact tag let's start there because if you're going you're in the portal but don't contact me okay something's up here you already something's already been decided here uh we'll leave it there guys thanks so much uh steve wallace cory burton jimmy stein i'm chris gory remember to follow and subscribe to your favorite sec show we'll be covering your favorite team every day throughout the offseason don't forget i'll have you covered with the entire conference every day with locked on sec and remember if you want to become an everydayer you can check us out locked on podcast.com slash every day or five bucks a month guys to become a full access every day or check that out we are part of the Locked On Podcast Network, covering your team every day.
