Good morning, everyone. I'm Megan Kelly. It's Tuesday, June 16, 2026, and this is your AM update. I think a lot of great things are going to happen in the Middle East right now, and very importantly, the oil is plummeting down. President Trump arrives at the G7 as the recently signed agreement with Iran to extend the ceasefire and reopen the Strait of Hormuz takes center stage. I am not prepared to compromise on the safety and happiness of our children, and that is why this ban must happen. The UK moving to ban social media access for children under 16 years old. A 21-year-old woman thrown from a 130-foot bridge without a rope attached in a tragic accident, as the guides now face homicide charges. And President Trump announcing a 4th of July rally on the National Mall, complete with military flyovers and what he promises will be the largest fireworks show in history. All that and more coming up in just a moment on your AM update. For the first time since World War II, our national debt has exceeded the gross domestic product. America's reckless government spending keeps catching up with us, higher inflation, higher prices, higher cost of living expenses, and higher interest payments on the national debt. Every dollar Washington spends on interest is a dollar it has to tax, borrow, or print. Smart retirement planners prepare for potential setbacks, and they can do that by diversifying with a time-tested asset known for weathering the storm. Consider physical gold from Birch Gold Group. You don't pull the ripcord on your parachute once you've already hit the ground. Don't wait for economic turbulence to diversify. President Trump arriving in Evian-Leban, France yesterday for the annual G7 summit just hours after announcing a new agreement aimed at ending the war with Iran and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The president traveling to France after celebrating his 80th birthday at the UFC event on the White House South Lawn late Sunday night. Mr. Trump beginning the summit with a one-on-one meeting alongside its host, French President Emmanuel Macron, where the two leaders addressed the preliminary agreement with Iran. President Trump announcing that the agreement is now signed and that commercial traffic is already beginning to move through the Strait. The initial framework aimed at opening the Strait, ending the American blockade of Iranian ports and extending the ceasefire for 60 days, while the two countries negotiate the far more difficult questions surrounding the regime's nuclear program. The Strait expected to reopen fully on Friday after mines are cleared from the critical shipping route and the agreement is formally signed. However, senior Trump administration officials telling the AP that it will take weeks for the Strait traffic to return to pre-war levels. President Macron calling the agreement an important step toward fixing the nuclear issue and pledging that France is ready to carry its fair share of the work required to reopen the waterway. The president and vice president JD Vance electronically signing the memorandum on behalf of the U.S. before Mr. Trump left Washington and Iranian official signing as well. The formal signing ceremony expected Friday in Geneva. With vice president Vance expected to represent the U.S., President Trump telling reporters he had not yet decided on whether he would attend. The complete text of the memorandum has not yet been released, leaving important details about the agreement unclear. President Trump posting to TruthSocial last night, quote, Iran has agreed to never have a nuclear weapon. Also, the story that the U.S. is paying Iran $300 million is fake news put out by the Democrats. It is unclear whether the $300 million figure is a typo or a reference to reports of a possible $300 billion reconstruction fund for Iran. That fund reportedly will be financed by neighboring Gulf states and remains contingent on Iran's compliance with the agreement, not paid directly by the U.S. Mr. Trump initially telling reporters yesterday afternoon the text of the agreement would likely become public after Friday's signing ceremony. Fox News later reporting that the administration instead planned to release it within 24 to 48 hours. Iranian President Masoud Pogesian also presenting a more cautious description of the breakthrough, calling the memorandum an important step toward ending the war and beginning negotiations, but stressing that a final agreement has not yet been completed. Iran taking center stage at the G7 with Ukraine trade and critical minerals also on the agenda, the president yesterday addressing recent conversations with Presidents Putin and Zelensky. We had a very good conversation yesterday with President Zelensky and President Putin The leaders of the U.S., Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan opening the summit last night with an outdoor working dinner at the beautiful Hotel Royal Evian, overlooking Lake Geneva in the French Alps. President Macron also preparing to host President Trump for a separate dinner on Wednesday at the Palace of Versailles, commemorating America's 250th anniversary and France's historic support for American independence. President Trump scheduled to continue meeting with the other G7 leaders today and tomorrow. British Prime Minister Kier Starmor announcing plans to ban children under 16 from social media, with restrictions expected to take effect in spring 2027. The new rules must first be approved by both houses of parliament where little resistance is expected. The ban would target platforms built around users posting and sharing content, interacting with one another and receiving material selected by algorithms. That means children under 16 would be blocked from services including TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, YouTube and X. Messaging apps like WhatsApp and Signal would remain available, along with certain educational, shopping and music streaming services. Starmor also proposing restrictions that extend beyond traditional social media. Children under 16 would be barred from live streaming themselves on any platform. Still under consideration, overnight social media curfews and mandatory breaks in infinite scrolling for users under 18. More details on the proposals expected to be released next month, Technology Secretary Liz Kendall clarifying yesterday that enforcement would target the companies, not children or their parents. Companies that fail to comply regularly could face fines of up to 18 million pounds, roughly 24 million US dollars, or 10% of their worldwide revenue, whichever is greater. Britain's communications regulator, Offcom, will now study which age verification systems can reliably determine whether a user is older than 16 while developing a broader enforcement strategy. The government argues those checks must be harder to evade than the ones introduced in Australia where many teenagers have reportedly continued reaching social media despite a similar under 16 ban. The plan following a nationwide public comment period, drawing more than 116,000 responses finding 9 in 10 parents back an under 16 social media ban. The Prime Minister yesterday making the case for the ban. I think most parents will welcome this action. I think they will welcome a clear and decisive choice. And they will welcome a government that stands by them, that supports them to do the best for their children and that fights for their happiness and safety against the most powerful companies in the world. Because this could be a fight and to this point it has been a fight. It doesn't have to be. I always prefer the politics of partnership and I fundamentally believe that we must harness the power of technology to build a stronger fairer Britain. But we must also protect our children. And so I want this message to be heard loud and clear. I am not prepared to compromise on the safety and happiness of our children. And that is why this ban must happen and that is why this ban will happen. Critics argue a blanket ban attacks children's access without fixing the platforms themselves, leaving addictive algorithms and other dangerous features in place while teenagers find workarounds or move to less regulated services. They also ask what about parents and personal responsibility. The UK crackdown comes as social media companies face a widening legal assault in the US. Meta, TikTok, Snap and YouTube among the companies facing thousands of claims from families, school districts, municipalities and state governments, litigation that could reshape how the platforms are designed and marketed to children. Coming up, three Brazilian rope jumping guides facing homicide charges after a tragic accident leads to them throwing a 21 year old woman to her death from a 130 foot bridge and President Trump unveiling plans for a July 4 rally on the National Mall. There is no safe like simply safe. Three extreme sports guides now facing homicide charges in Brazil after throwing a 21 year old woman from a 130 foot bridge without attaching her to the rope meant to keep her secure. The horrifying mistake unfolding Saturday morning at an abandoned railroad overpass known as the Skeleton Bridge outside the city of Lomera in Sao Paulo state. Maria Rodriguez de Freitas heading there to try rope jumping, which works differently from a traditional bungee jump. Instead of bouncing the jumper back upward on an elastic cord, the rope catches the person near the bottom of the fall, carrying them into a long swinging arc. But the system only works if the rope is connected. The fatal jump captured on video going viral on X over the weekend. Rodriguez de Freitas held horizontally in a position known as the airplane. Her face pointed toward the open air, her arms and legs stretched outward. The instructors carrying her closer to the edge, one holding her top half, another holding near her waist. A third instructor helping lift Rodriguez de Freitas' feet into the air, then stepping back as the two front instructors themselves attached to safety ropes march toward the edge. Then as the men begin swinging her body forward, someone off camera appears to realize what is about to happen. According to a translation by the Brazilian outlet O Globo, a voice cries out about the rope, but the guides have already released her. Rodriguez de Freitas disappearing over the edge as a horrified witness shouts, Jesus, as the camera pans down toward the ground. The rope that should be racing over the edge behind Rodriguez de Freitas still lying on the platform, never attached. Witnesses attempting to provide emergency aid, emergency crews pronouncing Rodriguez de Freitas dead at the scene due to her injuries. She was the first person scheduled to jump that morning. Police initially taking six people connected to the operation into custody, three people who had been working at a nearby tent later released. The three guides accused of handling the jump now face homicide charges according to O Globo. Two of the men fleeing into nearby woods once they realized what had happened, according to the New York Post, police ultimately using a military helicopter to locate them. All three men now held in pretrial detention, the judge citing their attempt to escape, ruling, quote, their freedom could lead to the repetition of equally dangerous conduct. The two guides telling police they suffered a quote blackout claiming they could not remember when the safety check failed or even who had been responsible for attaching the ropes. The third man reportedly claiming he had only been asked to hold Rodriguez de Freitas by the legs and help with the launch. Police also learning the guides apparently had no fixed assignments for completing the safety checks, meaning no single person was clearly responsible for making sure the jumper was secured according to local outlet UOL. Attorneys for the three men pointing to their previous experience and arguing they had never been involved in a fatal jump before. The three men facing between six and 30 years in prison if convicted. President Trump announcing plans for a massive July 4th rally on the National Mall, promising a military spectacle and the largest firework show in history to mark America's 250th birthday. The tribute to America set to begin at 7 p.m. on Independence Day, stretching from the Lincoln Memorial to the Washington Monument. Mr. Trump writing on true social quote, this huge celebration will honor our country's people, spirit, strength, resolve, and triumphs. More than 300 members of military bands, orchestras, and ceremonial units will perform patriotic classics along with selections from President Trump's own playlist, curated by DJ DJ T himself. The program also featuring military flyovers and air shows, followed by keynote remarks from the president and what he promises will be quote the largest firework show in U.S. history. The announcement following the successful UFC Freedom 250 at the White House over the weekend, kicking off a summer of events celebrating America's 250th. Some critics, mostly Democrats and the usual collection of wet blankets in the media, now objecting to what sounds like a Trump rally on the 4th of July, accusing him of hijacking America's birthday, turning it into a celebration of himself and blurring the line they say between a national commemoration and a political event. The concern echoing complaints surrounding another major piece of the anniversary celebration, the Great American State Fair, opening on the National Mall leader this month. At least seven states, all Democrat-led, backing out, most blaming the price of building and operating their own exhibits. An Oregon official also citing concern that the fair had become more politically partisan than state officials were originally led to believe. The fair's entertainment lineup facing its own revolt, several performers withdrawing shortly after their appearances were announced, claiming they had agreed to join a national birthday celebration without understanding how closely it would be connected to President Trump. Among those dropping out, Martina McBride, Brett Michaels, the Commodores, Morris Day, Young M.C., and the latest touring version of Mellie Vanilly. In other words, the backlash has cost the fair some recognizable names, just not many from this century. President Trump responding by adding another rally to the calendar, announcing he will personally headline the fair's June 24th opening ceremony. Both events will be free and open to the public.
