Hello, and welcome to the Sleepy Bookshelf, where we put down our worries from the day and pick up a good book. In our last episode, we read the final pages of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. In case you nodded off before we finished, this is a recap of the last episode. But be warned, this is your spoiler alert. If you haven't listened to the whole book and you don't want to know how it ends yet, then stop this episode now. For the rest of you, I will continue. After a tournament, where Ceylan Salot defeated and humiliated Sir Agravein and Sir Modred, the two Knights sought revenge. They gathered others and caught Lancelot visiting Queen Guinevere's chamber, while King Arthur was away, accusing him of treason. Lancelot, though unarmored, fought his way out, killing Agravein and many others. Modred escaped and informed King Arthur, who was devastated, but was bound by honour to act, so Guinevere was condemned to be burned. As she was brought to execution, Lancelot and his allies attacked. Lancelot and his allies attacked, rescued her, and took her to safety at his castle, La Joyeus Gard. However in the chaos, he accidentally killed Sir Gareth and Sir Gareth, Sir Garwein's brothers, unaware that they were unarmed. This tragedy turned Garwein into Lancelot's sworn enemy, and he convinced Arthur to besiege Lancelot's castle. Lancelot refused to fight the King directly, but eventually battle broke out. Then the Pope intervened, urging peace, and Lancelot returned Guinevere to her king. Arthur was willing to reconcile that Sir Garwein refused, demanding vengeance. To help restore peace, Lancelot left England and went to France. Sir Garwein told Arthur that Lancelot was planning an invasion, and so he took his army overseas, leaving Modred in charge of the kingdom. Sir Modred betrayed Arthur, and falsely claimed that the king was dead, crowned himself, and attempted to marry Guinevere. She escaped to the Tower of London, and later to a convent, spending the rest of her days repenting her sins. Arthur returned to England and defeated Modred's forces in battle, but the war weakened his army. Garwein was mortally wounded, and before dying, repented. He admitted his pride caused the war, and asked Arthur to make his peace with Lancelot. Arthur pressed on, and met Modred in a final battle. A truce was briefly arranged, but it collapsed when a knight drew his sword to kill a snake, triggering full, unexpected combat. In the brutal fight that followed, nearly all knights on both sides were slain. At last only Arthur, Sir Lucan and Sir Bedivere remained. Arthur killed Modred with a spear, but Modred with his dying strength, struck Arthur a fatal blow. Dying, Arthur ordered Bedivere to throw Excalibur into the lake. Twice he hesitated, unwilling to discard the precious sword, but on the third attempt he obeyed. The mysterious hand rose from the water, caught the sword and disappeared. Arthur then requested to be carried to a barge, captained by three mourning queens, who took him to the Isle of Avalon to heal or to die. His final words urged Bedivere to remain strong and pray for his soul. Lancelot, meanwhile, spent the rest of his days as a hammer, and the round table collapsed, along with the kingdom.
