The Glass Cannon Podcast's Blood of the Wild campaign continues as scouts discover a dead warrior from the Burning Mammoth tribe in the river, leading Grandfather Ewa to reveal the hidden history of the Broken Tusk's split from the Burning Mammoth and the loss of the Primordial Flame. The party must prepare the camp for the Night of the Green Moon ceremony while managing multiple preparation tasks with limited time and mixed success.
Insights
- Narrative worldbuilding through NPC exposition creates investment in campaign stakes without requiring player prior knowledge of lore
- Failed skill checks create meaningful consequences and time pressure that force strategic prioritization of objectives
- Character-driven roleplay moments (Yelka's emotional vulnerability, Raga's animal empathy) deepen party bonds and create memorable scenes
- Preparation mechanics add tactical planning layers beyond combat, requiring resource management and collaborative problem-solving
- Critical successes on skill checks can provide narrative rewards and mechanical advantages that feel earned rather than arbitrary

Oh yeah Like most white girls with bangs I play ukulele You too? That's not really the sound I was expecting But yeah I really play the ukulele And what makes it a little bit better Is that I'm actually like kind of good So Wow That's awesome I'm not Oh, can you, you have to bring it. You need to bring it to one of our sessions. I want to hear it. Okay. I want to hear the ukulele on an episode. I love a good ukulele. That can be arranged. That's great. I can play like one Ingrid Michaelson song on mine, so. Oh God, so good. Yeah. So good. The Way I Am or the other one. That one? That I also like. Yes, The Way I Am and. What's the one I like? The one about a house on the top of France. That is the other one, yes, that I can do. Don't you worry there, my honey, honey. Yeah, that one. And I have a trumpet. Her songs sound great on ukulele. All of this sounds really on theme for our quest in the Frozen Lair. I always imagine ukuleles playing. I can't imagine an instrument more inappropriate to the realm of the Mammoth Lords than a ukulele. Maybe that if we had a teetar. it'd be great if right now skid was like i play a giant set of hidebound drums i wish i could that'd be hot i could uh i remember many many years ago i was in my early 20s and i went to the pennsylvania renaissance fair with my good buddy mcd who's our community manager who you all know and we went to we had gone when we were like in high school and then hadn't gone for years we were out of college and we were like should we go back to the pennsylvania renaissance fair so we go we go to the fair and i remember being there early in the morning and walking past a show and i'll just never forget it for some reason there was a show happening and it was and there was a guy a shirtless with hair just like down to the middle of his back playing this giant set of high drums literally and he was just wailing away and there was like a couple other drummers, a couple other instruments. I forget like what exactly the show was or with it, but he was just going at it and like head banging. And this is like nine 45 in the morning. And I was just like, that guy has an awesome job. I was like, you know, I was like in my early twenties, like trying to find my way in the world. And I was like that, that guy's happy when he goes to work. Can we get that guy? Is that guy available? Can we get him on the pod? Seriously. He could, he could accompany your, your overly worded intro, which is dun, dun, dun. Yeah. That's exactly what it needs. I've been talking to his agent and he is $700 per episode. So we're going to do it. We're going to do it. Jared makes promises and I have to find a way to make the question work. That's our, that's our MO. But back to, back to musical instruments. I am. So when this airs, I will have started learning an instrument that I'm going to set my mind to, which is the electric bass. Oh, hell yeah. I learned to play the bass guitar. I have a very basic understanding. It's never too late, Joe, and good for you. Yeah, exactly. I have a basic understanding of the guitar. I can play a basic guitar. And I play some kind of in a band. And I'm half kidding. But I play sometimes with friends, including Nick Lowe, our good buddy Nick Lowe. And our bassist moved to Florida. And I was like, I should try to learn how to play electric bass. So I'm actually taking tips. Michael, who works at our company, he is an actual bassist in a band. Oh, yeah. And I was like, how do you play the bass in a Zoom call? And he was like, well, I mean, a lot goes into it. It was an interesting conversation. But I'm excited. I haven't touched one yet, but I'm hoping to start learning to play. That is so cool. Yeah. That's great. And by the time our next episode airs, I will have learned piano. All of it? All of it. All the piano. That'll be done. I will be proficient. Done. That's a good use of your downtime. And I'll be doing solo concerts. Yeah. Oh, great. It's easy to learn piano because it's just 88 keys. You just do one key per day over the course of like three months. You've learned the piano. Yeah, there you go. How hard is it to learn one key? Not that hard. It's been one day doing it. You've mastered it. Right. At the end of three months, you can give a concerto. Yeah. That's how the guy in Shine in the movie Shine did it. That's what made me want to do it, Skitties. I just kept, you know, once a week, twice a week, I put on the movie Shine. That's right. And you guys can see right now I'm wearing my Shine t-shirt with a photo of Jeffrey Rush on it. Such a fanboy. Yeah. I'm a total fanboy for Shine. Everything, Dave, it's everything. Do you know this movie? No, but last night I did watch Snatch, which is pretty good. Similar title. Yeah, that's what made me think of it. Dark humor, which I like. I laughed a lot. That's the first time you saw Snatch? I'd never seen it before. And yeah, I didn't even mind that it's a cast of all men, except for a couple naked ladies we see in like two scenes. Dude heavy movie. Normally, I am annoyed by that, but this one, I didn't mind so much. So there you go. Yeah. That's huge. Very dude heavy. Lots of movies are. I watched a movie that is also pretty dude heavy, but was on our assigned reading list. I watched Quest for Fire this morning. Hell yeah. Nice. Love that movie. I'm a huge fan of that movie. Great movie. Good to know. You know what I do when I get done watching a movie that's mostly men and then a couple naked women? As the credits roll, I chuckle to myself and I go, boys will be boys. That's what I always do. I'm Mandy. And I'm Melissa. And this is Moms and Mysteries. We're two Florida moms obsessed with true crime. From infamous cases like Ellen Greenberg to shocking Florida stories like the Dan Markell killing. With 55 million downloads, we bring you new deep dives every Tuesday and Thursday. Listen to Moms and Mysteries on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hi, this is Rob Benedict. And I am Richard Spate. We were both on a little show you might know called Supernatural. It had a pretty good run. 15 seasons, 327 episodes. And though we have seen, of course, every episode many times, we figured, hey, now that we're wrapped, let's watch it all again. And we can't do that alone. So we're inviting the cast and crew that made the show along for the ride. We've got writers, producers, composers, directors, and we'll, of course, have some actors on as well, including some certain guys that played some certain pretty iconic brothers. It was kind of a little bit of a left-field choice in the best way possible. The note from Kripke was, he's great, we love him, but we're looking for like a really intelligent Duchovny type. With 15 seasons to explore, it's going to be the road trip of several lifetimes. So please join us and subscribe to Supernatural then and now. Oh please, not that music. That music gives me nightmares from my childhood. Could we get something a little bit lighter, some lighter music here? Are you a fan of true crime TV shows? And what about Unsolved Mysteries, the show that jumpstarted all of our love of true crime? I'm Ellen Marsh. And I'm Joey Taranto. And we host I Think Not, a true crime comedy podcast covering some of the wildest stories from your favorite true crime campy TV shows all the way to Unsolved Mysteries. Baby, you will laugh. You will cry. You'll think about true crime in a whole new way. And you'll also ask yourself, who gave these people mics? New episodes of I Think Not are released every Wednesday with bonus episodes out every Thursday on Patreon. And every Monday, you can listen to our True Crime Rundown, where we go over the top true crime headlines of the week. So come and join us wherever you listen to your podcasts. All right. All weird joking aside, would you like to enter our gender equal world of the realm of the Mammoth Lords? Yes. Oh, yes. Let's do it. It's the world we make it and we can make it however we want. So let's make it our world. And let's start with this overly written intro. The other lords say our days are numbered. Our following dwindles. Enemies dog our footsteps. And we have failed in our sacred charge. They say we will soon pass away into the endless northern night. They are mistaken. We are strong. broken but strong the snow blinds our eyes and yet we see true the wind freezes our skin and yet we endure their weapons break our bones and yet we stand tall our hearts beat and it is like the sound of a herd of mammoths stampeding across the tundra and in each heart flows the blood of the wild The blood of the wild! There it is. The sound of the mammoth's calling. Guys, I have to tell you. I honestly got kind of into that one. Those that can't see it, I mean, Mary Lou puts everything into that mammoth. I don't know. I get worried that she can't pull off the episode. You should see the veins in her neck. It's not just the sound. It's a whole performance. There's like a treat, maybe a little video clip of it. You know what? once we're 25 episodes in or 50 episodes in, we'll release a super cut of video of every, all the Mary Lou mammoth intro sounds. That's a great idea. I like that idea. That's for you patrons. Can you make that? That will be at the $20 Patreon tier though. Which doesn't exist. Which does not exist, but will. No, but I like that idea of putting out a whole string of connected content after Mary Lou asked me specifically, this isn't going to be on camera, right? I don't need to wear my makeup. I'm like, no, you're good. And they'll be like, look at Mary Lou in her PJs. Do it. She chose this when she did something visually hilarious every episode. Yeah. You've really... You did this to yourself, Mary Lou. I mean, I'm disappointed it's not video because I've got my Shine t-shirt on and my... This really smart fedora hat that I found at a store yesterday. That is a sweater. All love. Yeah. Anyway, I'm going to keep it on. Guys, let's do a little bit of a recap. Our four scouts of the Banner of the Broken Tusk have been doing small quests to prepare for the Night of the Green Moon. The Night of the Green Moon is a very important ceremony among the Broken Tusk following. It heralds the coming of spring. And so here we are in the realm of the Mammoth Lords, a vast frozen plain in the north of the continent of Avistan. But now spring is coming and some green is visible beneath the frost and trees are starting to flower and bear fruit. And so our four scouts, they hunted a moose so that there can be a feast on the night of the green moon. They prepared the ceremonial site of rock loom. They went and gathered tapers, giant tapers for the herd of the broken. Yes, you did. And finally, you went to the Gornock River. Snuffles and Snuggles, is that their name? Snuffles. Snuffles and Snuffles. Snuffles and Snuggles? Snuffles. Snuffles. I said it wrong the first time. It's all Fs. I'm just glad they have names, and I'm going to make them a major emotional motivator throughout the rest of the campaign. But what you should know is that you went to the Gornok River to get ceremonial vessels filled with water. You ended up discovering ash in the river. And then after an encounter with some mischievous fae, you found the body of a Kellid woman that belongs to another following that Yelka was able to recall is called the Burning Mammoth. Yelka doesn't know much beyond that. She's heard elder mammoth lords, elder people within the following whisper this name. So none of you know much about it. But you finished there on the island. You found a talisman on the dead woman, the dead Kellid woman. You have not identified what kind of talisman it is yet, only that it is magical. And so I'm going to go ahead and say, unless anybody objects, that you have filled the ceremonial vessels with water, as you were sent to do, and you have decided to return to camp. Did anybody, unless someone's like, wait, I had one more thing to do in the Gornick River. Wait, I had one more thing to do. I knew it. I knew it would be Joe. Then fine, the vessels are filled. And what do you do, AWOL? I'm half kidding. Mary Lou, did you actually have something that you wanted to do? Yes. I know that Raga, when she found the arm, she took that arm and bundled it and put it in her pack to offer it burial because she knows that humans like that sort of thing. And so now that we've found the body that it belongs to, I think she would want to bring that body back to camp. That's awesome. This is exactly what I was going to say. It's like, I don't know if we have the means, like if Olag can just carry it, or if that means we're not going to bring enough water back, or if we need to fashion some sort of, you know, litter. But I would love to try to bring the body back. Yeah, I think we could ask Baba as well. To carry, that's smart. Yeah. Yeah. So we'd like to try to bring the body back, Jared. The other thing, I actually asked Jared this off air. I asked how far we were from camp. And that was the reason for that request because we could just go back and then be like, there's a body. We need some help. We got to go get it and then go back. But it is what, an hour? You said, Jared, hour or two hike? About an hour. Yeah. That's pretty far. So I think if we could bring the body, I'd like to. uh absolutely so um and in terms of fashioning a litter i'm gonna say fairly simple for you i'm not gonna require a skill role for that and so um baba the bear the polar bear uh raga's uh boon companion and adoptive brother is dragging the body uh through the woods across the paths to the gornak river back to where the broken tusks have made their encampment and um soon you are all uh entering camp and you can see once again the many tents scattered across the plain and then beyond those tents the mammoth herd big lumbering brown shapes and you know there's even like a little bit of vibration in the ground uh as they uh trumpet and move about um and as you enter camp you see people looking at you in surprise uh and suspicion because you have a body with you right um and uh Let's sua actually approaches you. If you remember, let's sua was one of the mammoth lords that runs the following an elf. And yes, in my notes, let's sua another mammoth lord elf. Thank you. Notes. Those are some good notes. Oh, my God. I look at my notes. It says let's sua full elf mammoth lord. Yes. Let's sua has a very stern demeanor. and Letzua marches forward out of the crowd of people kind of staring at you and says, you have brought a body back with you. Yes, we have. We found it. We think something terrible is going on, Letzua, and we need to report it. That is the job of a scout. Yes! And what do you think is going on? There's, I'll just, Yelka suddenly, like, didn't has a little wavering confidence so she just kind of glances around at her friends I'll step up and say I think it's some sort of war going on up north is it north up the river it was north north up the river it seems like there might be a war going on followings fighting each other or something there fires burning fires of war and battle and this body came flowing down the river The river is filled with ash The river is filled with ash The river is choked with ash. Calm yourself, Skars. They could be coming toward us! And the burning mammoth, they're part of the burning mammoth. I will yell, come quiet. A bird shot water up me! Quiet! The whole river! I'll need to know more about the last statement soon, but... I want to hear more about that later. I want to hear about that in all the detail you can possibly give me. But until then, I need you to remain quiet. We do not want to scare the rest of the following. I believe you should take this news to Grandfather Ewa. Yes, Letzua. Greet. Yes, Letzua. Follow me. and let sua's ears move slightly as he turns on a heel and marches you toward grandfather a was tent the largest tent in the center of the encampment but by saying it's the largest i do not mean that it is opulent or luxurious in any way it is made of hides like everything else here smoke comes out of the top of it let sua pulls back the flap and as he does so pakano emerges carrying the spear and says, think about it, Grandfather Ewa. Remember what I've said. Then he gives you all a contemptuous look. Yelka doesn't make eye contact with him. Ewa gives him a dirty look. Raga makes eye contact with him. And it's not nice. He smirks. I don't. I don't. I look down when he comes by. that's when he smirks when the when the orc looks down and won't make eye contact with him he sneers and he walks away and then from inside the tent you hear scouts come we'll go into the tent sit by the fire and you can see that he has a a big fire uh pit with lots of hot coals in it And that's where the smoke's coming from, up out of the tent. Yeah. Yoko will sit and kind of detach. She has these like fur knee pads that she wears. And sitting by the fire, she'll kind of unloop the leather thongs that hold them on and just set them to the side. And sit crisscross applesauce. When Olag sits down, you know when like a cat or a dog is really young? when they sit down they just like they just like fall they just go full force like that's the way he sits down Olaf you're on my knee pads he's tugging them out from underneath him once you are all sitting grandfather Ewa quickly confers with Let's sua and you hear grandfather Ewa give instructions that the body be burnt and then he turns to you Oh, yes. Raga, Raga's a little troubled. She hears this, but she's troubled. And she says, Grandfather Ewa, this woman, our sister, she died with her spear in her hand. She died fighting. She was a warrior. She should be buried with her spear. I am giving her the burial that her people would prefer. But her spear, it was her spear. Her spear is with it. She... Kano has that spear. Yes, he has shown me the spear. And the banner that was attached to it. He doesn't deserve it. It is her spear. I understand that you already challenged him for it. Yes, but that was when we did not know its owner. She's incomplete without her spear. Okay. Grandfather Ewa, you know, he's very wrinkled, very aged. He looks, you know, like almost like a sack of bones. But at the same time, he moves with a lot of vigor and his eyes are very awake and sharp. And he has the face paint across his face. And he looks at Raga and he says, you are new to our following. We keep everything that could be of use. We do not burn weapons that have been finally crafted. For now, Pekana will wield it, but who knows what hand will hold it later. The spear has passed from one brave to another. Raga does seem a little chastened. it was definitely noble her intentions but also because she just really fucking hates Picano and didn't want him to have that spear so she yeah that makes a lot of sense to her she doesn't know the way of people as well though she finds religion really interesting so and grandfather Ewa did not admonish you he uh kind of smiles softly after he has said this to you and then he turns to all of you and says what happened and we can cut to the chase here you can tell me we tell him everything or perhaps you say we tell him this and leave such and such out and um i don't think there should be a lot of metagaming here someone who who speaks for you usually That's a good question I think we're figuring it out Yeah that's okay I feel like it's AWOL But also It's either AWOL or Yelka I think Yeah I do have I think depending on what we're talking about It would be one of them Like depending on their sphere of expertise That we're talking about It would be One of the two of them So then In that case AWOL will, he'll tell him everything. And he'll start with... We were attacked by fey creatures that were out on the river and they tricked us into thinking there'd be a magical way to clean the river because you see it was filled with ash and we didn't know if the impure water would work for the festival and so we tried it but they were, well they fooled us. And he doesn't mention like specifically what happened to Olag, he just says they fooled us. And they tried to fight us and we fought back and And Yelka really, really helped Olag and Raga. They were hurt pretty bad in the fight. And Barber was really great, too. He was a fierce, fierce fighter. And after that is when we saw the fires on the horizon up the hill to the north, several hours hike away. It looks like a fire on the horizon. Fires. I don't know, but I don't think it looked like an accident or some kind of storm or something. and it looked like a war. It looked like a fight. Somebody was coming down the mountain, tearing up this tribe. They're the burning mammoths. They're killing them. The burning mammoths. So you know their name as well. Yelka told me. And he looks over to Yelka. Oh, yes. I've heard it mentioned before, and I'd seen the symbol, but I don't really know anything else about them. Are they friendly with us? Or are they... she just like gets nervous looking at grandfather awal and then just stops well the reason maybe is that he has put his head down and is looking at the hot coals in front of him and then finally he raises it again and says i had hoped you would never have to hear the story that i'm about to tell you when you brought me news of the snares you found awal i didn't tell you what i have to tell you now. I was hoping that maybe it was a chance coincidence. But now I must tell you about the burning mammoth. In the Ethgeir, the before times, we were the burning mammoth. You were the burning mammoth? What? We were part of their following. And we carried with us a sacred object. He spreads hot coals in kind of a layer when he tells you that we were part of the burning mammoth. And then he takes one really big glowing orange coal and puts it in the center of that field of sparks and flame and he says, we carried with us the primordial flame. Primordial flame? the first flame then he says there was a great quake in the eastern lands and the demon horde burst forth and he lifts a rock from outside the fire and when he lifts it up pill bugs little grubs and stuff start coming out from under the rock pouring out the mammoth lords argued about what to do about this demon horde some of us wanted to use the flame to fight the demons but some of us knew that this would be folly so a small group of us we did what we had to do and he separates the big glowing coal and half of the little burning coals around it from the greater bulk of the coals and he says we took the primordial flame we took it somewhere in secret to keep it safe we were branded as traitors There was a split within the burning mammoth. We became a new following. Broken from our predecessors. Broken from our ancestors. We became the broken tusk. Now, I fear the burning mammoth have returned. They want the primordial flame? Father, do they hunt us? I do not know why they are here, or why they have come so close to our route. But it does not bode well, Raka. But why would they have... Why would they have bodies in the river that were burned and... If they're the ones doing the burning... Aeol is right. why is the burning mammoth suffering? I am not sure. But I have heard rumors, snatches of information about them from other followings. They are aggressive. And they not only might come into conflict with other followings, they often punish their own in ways that are grisly and out of line with the system of the earth. And I'm glad we broke away from them. They have changed. They have changed. It has been many, many years, many moons since we were part of their following. And in that time they have become very warlike. And you, Grandfather Ewa, were you part of it? Were you part of the burning mammoth? My mother was. Grandfather Ewa is like a hundred years old, so it goes way back. So for several generations, we've been the broken tusk, so that's why we would have not known about that history. It goes way back. that's so cool this is all alluded to in the player's guide like the split but it doesn't go into any of this detail how it came about and I didn't know that I forgot about it honestly and I forgot that the characters I figured the characters knew that the PCs knew that so it's cool that like you might not if you were younger especially alright so I also want to oh alright so he wants to AWOL wants to like in a moment of silence. He's just gonna say, Where is it? Where did you hide it? And he pulls out his compass. His compass? Like wide-eyed, like, I knew it. I knew it. That is the saddest part of our story. Oh no. We took the primordial flame. We hid it away in a cave along our route. We set a guardian. We thought that it would be safe. But when we came back, it was gone. Is the guardian still there too? I do not know. It has been many, many years since we have seen. Our eyes have looked upon the primordial flame. If they have come to take it from us, there is nothing to take who has the flame now? what is its power? I never saw the flame used myself I was very young but I am told that the flame has the ability to make a barren place lush verdant to bring it to life to create food where there was none before animals to hunt fruit to forage it can change an entire landscape this is beautiful beautiful but dangerous sought after Why would it What would it do against a horde of demons Yeah I'm wondering the same thing It can not only Make things grow And flourish It can work the reverse With a Knowing look in her eye Yelka says Sometimes things that are gifts Also come with darkness I understand This is just like Star Trek 2 This is Genesis Their leader is called Khan Says Olav He wears very He wears very low cut Outfits where you can see a lot Of his chest Grandfather Ewa We found This I'm not sure which one of us Has the talisman I haven't Ewa will you show Grandfather Ewa the talisman I believe it's a magical item. I could sense something special about it, but I couldn't tell what it was. Do you know why the woman we found would have been wearing this? This is a talisman that would be worn by a warrior. This is a hunter's bane. Hunter's bane? Yes. Does it do? It's a free action triggered by an undetected enemy that hits you with an attack. You must be trained in survival to use it. When you activate the Hunter's Bane, you sense the exact location of the attacker, making it hidden from you instead of undetected. If the attacker is behind lead, the Hunter's Bane fails and is wasted. Wow. Cool. Thank you, Grandfather. Yes. What did I just say? It sounded different. This look came over your face. Yeah. Your eyes glassed over. Your eyes glazed over and you've spoken this strange language, but somehow, deep down, I understood. So, scouts, first, I would ask you to be very quiet about this. Do not panic the rest of the following. But don't people need to be prepared? If they're going to come here and try to burn our huts, don't we need to be prepared? We will prepare. We will prepare. We must observe the night of the green moon. Tomorrow night. I ask you, get rest. Some of you look hurt. You look worse for wear. Get rest, and tomorrow, I will depend on the four of you to get the following ready to move out as soon as the ceremony is over. All right, we can do that, great father, A-Wather. And so he goes back to tending his coals. He gives you a smile. Grandfather Ewa, may I speak with you privately for just a moment? Of course, daughter. Daughter of the following. I don't think you're actually my daughter. No, my father's name is something else. It is... Gronom. It is Gronom. Is that what you stayed to ask him? What's my dad's name again? This is so embarrassing. So with everyone gone, Yelka will say, um, I, Pekanos has said some things to us that I'm worried about and I think you should know. He called us all a lot of names and I don't know what he told you, but, and Yelka's like struggling to say these negative things out loud, but we are we're meant to be a family here and accept everyone we've always accepted everyone but the way he said the word orc when he was talking to Olag earlier today he wasn't saying it like it was a good thing and I just think you should know about it and I didn't want to say that in front of everyone because I think it hurt Olag's feelings Pekano fights against the way of the earth the way of the burning, I mean sorry, the broken tusk he he will soon fall in line or he will fall away from us we must let this happen naturally I still believe that there is in him a chance that he will join with us in heart and spirit you do? You think maybe there's still a chance that Maybe there's something good inside of him He has challenged me for leadership of Falcon House What? Oh, what? He believes it is time for me to step down Did you accept the challenge? Yelka's eyes have gone wide at this idea This ridiculous idea No I did not accept his challenge. And as a mammoth lord, I am not bound to. Perhaps the night of the green moon will work its magic on him. There's still a chance for him. The night of the green moon You right It is a special night Thank you Grandfather Ewa I see you later And Yelka will just Renewed in her home Renewed in her love of Picado I can fix him. Her crush returned. See you later, Yelka. See you later. And so, you may now rest. You may rest for eight hours. Meaning you can regain your constitution modifier times one because you are level one characters um you may also seek out additional healing uh if you need it um before uh the next day's activities which uh will be you prepping to make the uh following ready to head out the second the ceremony is over and you all know that as a large migratory company that's a lot of work uh getting the the following ready to just head out like uh to move um For example, all these tents need to go down. So there's so many things that you will have to do in order to do that. So you have a big day ahead of you. Let me know what you'd like to do in terms of healing quickly, and then we will get into the activities assigned to you. Nice. Welcome to the realms of peril and glory. All will be revealed in Sonic the Hedgehog presents The Chaotix Case Files. Listen now, wherever you get your podcasts. The Chaotix are on the case. Where are you guys at on HP? I'm at eight. Oh. So not great. I am fine. Maybe I can do some first aid if we need it. I think I'm going to try and treat my own wounds myself. I think that Raga is just a little troubled by the day and by the experience. So she's going to retreat to her lean-to with Baba, where she's made sort of like a nest out of furs and hides. And she's going to try and treat her own wounds first and see how far she can get before she brings herself to someone else. Very good. She will use medicine to do that? yeah medicine to treat wounds great you have to be trained in medicine you do oh I'm not trained oh then you may not do this I said Olag when in the last episode that he was going to treat your wounds while Yelka was doing her thing so let me try that we could retroactively roll those HP from the day before yeah so So I get it. It's not a crit, but I do make it. So that's, I think that's 2d8. So that's seven hit points back. Nice. Does that get you close to full Raga? That's great. Yeah, yeah, it gets me to 15. Plus you get one for the night's rest. So that's 16. Nice. Yeah, that's pretty good. Okay. Great. And yes, you do have to be trained. It is a trained action. And you have to be wearing or holding healer's tools. Which I've got. Fun fact. The barbarian warrior is so rarely also a man of medicine. A medicine man. Yeah. Well, he's from, you know, apple don't fall far from the tree. Our dad does stuff with herbs and shit, you know? Yeah. That's right. And actually, while we're spending this time resting and sort of healing up. Olag, I mean, we probably, our spaces in our tent are probably like pretty close to each other. And Olag says to Yelka, I felt it when you helped me. I think you saved me again. I just knew that you could do it. You just don't have to do it alone. That's all. Hmm. The mist came over me. Sometimes it happens. I can see nothing but red. I'm not completely in control. I'm not sure where it comes from, if it's in my blood. But you brought me back. well sometimes my power isn't really in my control either and I don't know where it comes from either so I guess we really are related we are his father told us we have to look out for each other we will I will return the favor soon there's no favor we're just always there for each other I love you Olog I love you Olog I love that you guys are like in like sleeping pallets near each other like goodnight John boy yeah totally so why don't we see where AWOL is overnight AWOL I believe you said that you you sort of live with Murthig right well that's something you and I had talked about yeah that's Muskox house. So that's, that's his house. And that's run by someone named Murthig, the fire, the firekeeper. So this got me interested. And so what, if we're still in the night before, I think he's going to return from his journey and talk to Murthig. And wait, Murthig, are you awake? Yes, of course I am. Boy, Murthig, by the way, is a dwarf. Oh, very aggressive, like hair styling. Like it's a broken tusk kind of style, but it's got like a top knot and then side hair that's like like shaved into jagged points. And instead of a beard, he has more like a very long kind of Fu Manchu style mustache. And then and then like a really good flavor saver on his chin. Oh, wow. I love I personally hate that Of course I am boy We were attacked today down by the river By some fey And I used it I used the sword He pulls out the blade It worked, worked really well actually Ah that is well boy Just like you said step up, thrust, it worked. Yes. Well, you be careful. There's more dangerous things out there than the fae that infest the rivers. And he like pauses for a minute and then kind of like looks around sideways and like he is incapable of keeping a secret. Like, incapable by his very nature. Grandfather Ewa asked him not to talk about this and he respects Grandfather Ewa and is like tortured inside. There's this burning fire within him that's like he has to talk about this and when he says, you know, it's... When Murthig says, you know, there's more dangerous things, you know, along the river, he's like, we found a body on the river. Say what, boy? Have you ever heard of the primordial flame? Oh my gosh. Boy. Careful what you speak of. What do you have to tell me about the primordial flame and where have you heard about it? Grandfather Awa told us. He said we weren't supposed to tell anybody, but I figured you're the firekeeper. and don't know why you never told me about it, but... Don't go getting any ideas in your head, AWOL. The flame is lost. We've adapted. We have a new life now among the broken tusk. A smaller migratory route. A smaller territory. But we do right by our members. We keep fed. We don't need to go running off after some primordial flame. but the burning mammoth they're here they're coming what? Grandfather Ewa says that they're nearby and they're looking for the flame he thinks so if we don't know where it is I don't know if they're gonna burn our house down or something I feel like we should be ready to fight we have to complete the ceremony of the night of the green moon it reaffirms our connection to sister cinder it is my most important charge as fire keeper yes i know i know and i and i'll be there to help but no i just think you should be ready that's all i don't want anything to to happen to you we have to get the camp ready to leave right and don't speak of anyone else speak to anyone else about the burning mammoth boy Yes, Murthic Sorry Now go to sleep You'll need your rest We have to get the camp ready to move out tomorrow And AWOL Just dreams Dreams Of the Primorian Flame, baby Oh man Demon hordes Standing on the top of a hillside Slaying thousands of demons. I can't wait for him to actually be in a demon fight and be like, this is not how I imagined it would have been. On that first natural one. It didn't happen in my dream like this. So, Raga, is there anything you'd like to tell us about your recuperation? Raga and Baba return to their nest, which is on the outskirts of the Otter House neighborhood. hood and um she like figuratively licks her wounds while baba literally licks her wounds um and they they fall asleep entwined um with her you know with her hand uh clasped around his fur and his big paws wrapped around her. They are siblings. That sounds cozy as hell. Yeah, I wish I had. And they're pretty warm. The next day dawns. You have a breakfast along with the rest of the following in sort of the center of the tents. People are excited. Tonight is the night of the green moon, but you all are called aside by Latsua. You know that it's important that we are ready to go as soon as the ceremony is over. Yes. Of course. Yes, yes. And I need you four to clean up the camp, clear the trail ahead of us, gather the herd together. And this is important, but I need you to dilute the spirits that everyone is going to drink tonight. Oh, yes. That makes sense. But do not let them know. They will be disappointed. Koss. Understood. Koss. Well, why are you standing here? Right, sorry. Of course. We'll start. Let's start by cleaning the camp, eh? Yeah, that's a good idea. All right. Very good. So you see some familiar faces. You see Weepa, heavy with child, walk by you. Oh, I get suddenly very worried when I see her. Yes. In fact, do you think you have a worried expression on your face? Yeah, probably. Yelka has not learned how to manage her emotions, you know, and maybe she won't ever. But yeah, she's not really thinking about when necessary she can put on what she needs to to present well. But in this moment right now, she's not thinking that anyone's really paying attention to her. So it is it is open on her face. Yes. Yelka. Raga has never needed to never needed to hide her emotions and never learned. So. Weepa walks forward and says, Yelka, is everything okay? Are you ready for the ceremony? Trying to be ready, Weepa. Oh, she holds her stomach for a second. It is a heavy burden. Do you think, do you think they'll be here soon? I do. I can already hear their voice in my ears. Wow. Um, thank you for... Nothing troubles you? Uh, um, no, just wanting to get everything right. It's a big responsibility, helping everyone get ready for the ceremony, and... You have trained well. I know the moose hunt did not go as expected, and I, uh... No. I used harsh words with all of you but it's because I want you to be strong scouts you are ready you are ready and she puts a hand out to pat you on the shoulder and then pauses and pulls it away oh oh you forgot about your own character for a second why didn't she touch me oh and that's exactly what Yelka is thinking as well oh thank you I should get back to what I need to be doing and Yelka will go and start just do more camp clean up cleaning up the camp so are you ready to do that? is that X-Men who can't touch anyone because she freezes them oh that's I love her Rogue can't touch she takes their life Life force. Yeah. Bummer. So cleaning up the camp, you're all going to work together, right, to do this? Yeah. Okay. Well, then I need, this will only take about an hour. You have eight hours to complete these tasks. Clean up the camp, clear the trail, dilute the spirits, and gather the herd. So anything you can't get done in eight hours doesn't get done. Okay? Okay. So cleaning up the camp, who would like to kind of lead that task? well let me put it this way it's going to be a skill check to uh to clean up the camp in crafting or society so now who would like to lead that me not me it's a hard pass i can't do either thing can you craft oh a wall artist extraordinaire yes i can i can it doesn't look right we need to make it look better over there but and he'll roll craft oh god oh no that's a seven a seven is not good and so an hour passes that's a fail an hour might pass soon and just kind of be like useless unless someone else wants to attempt the check right now craft or oh you can do society Raga which I think is the most ironic no I don't have society I have religion Oh. Oh, nobody has society. None of us have it. Nobody has society. Crafting or society, and you don't have to be trained here to try this, but it has to be another character at this point. I also do. I'll just see what happens with my die roll. Okay, go for it. Oh, we have no intelligence bonuses in the party? It's pretty bad. Just really trying to focus in on getting all of this done because she doesn't want to think about any of the emotions that seeing Weepa made her feel. Yelka starts taking over. No, no, no. Not like that, AWOL. Like this. Over here. Come on. There. Put that there. I told you it wouldn't work. I don't know why. You keep making us do this. I did it exactly as well as you did, which wasn't very good and was also a seven. Okay. Oh, no. The hour has passed and you now have seven hours left. Oh, no. So you can attempt this again. It's obviously not going well. I think that we maybe just change tack here and get, let's get the herd. Let's get the herd, because we have to have the herd. The club doesn't have to be clean. We have to have the herd. Very good. So let's shift to that. I will take the lead on this one. I will talk to them nicely. So you head out to the herd, and the second you get there, suddenly you see a mammoth going nuts. just like Mary Lou's is better than mine it goes nuts it's trampling and bellowing everything around it and two herders are rushing to calm the beast and they are having a little bit of a tough time kind of getting it to calm down as it just bucks and swings its trunk and its tusks around what do you do? oh oh I'm going to, Raga's gonna run up. Oh goodness gracious, what is wrong? And that her talking in Mammoth Very good The Mammoth immediately clocks you and it lifts one of its huge massive feet and the two herders see a quill sticking out of the foot and one of them says porcupine porcupines are such messy creatures they have no idea the troubles they cause when they leave their quills about we can find a We can help the mammoth. You have to find the porcupine. What? Why? I love it. Why? Because if it's still around here, it'll prick some more of these mammoths and then we'll have a full stampede on our hands. Oh, no. You are right. This is not good. Okay. Oh, porcupine. And I'm gonna... track? Can I try and track or do perception to see if I can find... Perception would work. Perception would work. If we're all there, can we all be looking or is this something that is just a one person kind of situation? You're all there and you can all be looking. I'll look as well. I rolled a 24 in perception. That's very good. That'll probably do it, but if other people would like to roll, they certainly are welcome to. I want to ask about rules, Jared. Do you think, so my hunt prey ability, I've never used it in this way. I'm curious. I feel like this is exactly what it should be for. So it says you designate a single creature as your prey and focus your attacks against that creature. You must be able to see or hear the prey or you must be tracking the prey during exploration. So can I hunt prey? Like if I know I'm looking for a porcupine, it basically what it does, if you allow me to do it, it gives me a plus two to any perception checks or survival checks to track the creature. I feel like this is something I should be using all the time. If I know what I'm looking for. Yeah. You have evidence of it. You know, you have the quill, maybe you, you can even get it handed to you by one of the herders. And, um, and so you can definitely go ahead and use your hunt prey ability. Okay, great. Uh, and use it to track this porcupine. Great. So I will use it for, uh, perception in this case. Just scanning around to see if I see any other, any signs of it. Come on. Yeah. 27. Nice. I only got a 17. Great. Olag, are you going to try it or are you just following with the other scouts? I did too. I got a 23. Nice. Well, everybody did really well. And so what I will say, it's, it's, it's a wall who finds it first because he is the tracker hunter and, And AWOL and RAGA and OLAG, you all notice all of this stuff, okay? You notice that there is a giant porcupine. Oh, shit. It's very large. It was kind of hidden in some of the tall grass. And you also see that it is in front of a burrow in the ground. And inside the burrow, you can see two smaller porcupines moving around. So it was protecting its burrow. Yes. And as soon as you get eyes on it, it hisses at you. Oh, no. Let me talk to her. She's another one. She cares about her babies. I will let her know that we mean her and her family no harm. Things will be all right. I promise. Okay, very good. So I'm going to approach. And Raga is going to say, Have you ever heard of porcupine? That's exactly what they sound like. No, but I'm convinced that's exactly what they sound like. I'm dead serious. Dead. They are adorable. They are very cute. It sort of moves its spines kind of like, you know, its hackles arise and its spines kind of like get really tense and it's hissing at you, but you're talking to it. And exactly what are you saying to it, Raga? I am saying, Hello. Hello, sister. My name is Raga, Raga Bear Daughter. And I'm happy to make your acquaintance. Your quills are quite sharp. Your barbs are incredibly powerful. You have injured one of our mammoths, but this is okay. I know why you did this, to protect your children. If I might ask, if I promise that me and my herd do not harm you, will you let us pass unmolested with no more quills or barbs in any feet or paws or hands? You may make your, I believe you have animal empathy check. You can use diplomacy or you could use nature here. It's up to you. Whichever you think is best. You can use diplomacy. And this is my favorite part. Make an impression. Yes. On a porcupine. I am making an impression. That was a 16. A 16 is a success. Nice. The creature calms down and it sort of gets closer to its burrow and sort of nuzzles its young, one of which sticks its head out of the burrow. And then it kind of looks up at you, like, almost questioningly, like, what will happen to my cubs? What will happen to my little porcupettes? And Raga goes... That was her saying, nothing will happen. Exactly nothing will happen to your and your porcupines. You can live out the rest of your days in your happy little burrow. Right, because you guys are going to gather the herd, right? Yeah, we're going to move them off their land. Forgive me if I'm assuming too much. Probably, Raga, you're saying you're going to gather the herd away from the burrow. Yes, exactly. That we are going to lead the herd away. They will be safe. Very good. Well, in order to gather the herd away, you have to complete one of these tasks. So you need to either, get this, it's nature or diplomacy. Wow. Wow. I have a plus six in nature, so. Can I? Pretty good. How about AWOL will aid? Can I aid? Of course. By standing near the porcupines? And just sort of like making sure that no mammoths come that way, basically during the herding process. Yes, but of course you have to give me a skill check that you're using. I'm going to use nature too. Okay, great. Roll that versus DC 20. All right, that versus DC 20 is a fail, unfortunately. A fail. So no plus one to whoever is about to make the nature or diplomacy roll to gather the herd. I'm going to try to aid as well. olag is going to use his strength to kind of curb or wrangle any of these mammoths that get out of hand he's going to try to make an athletics check to try to physically keep things as calm as possible and the smell of them is so strong and the heat that comes off of their big bodies here out on the on the tundra like and you know their breath lifts up in clouds as you kind of push them along try to get them into one big clump and go ahead and roll. I think athletics would be appropriate. Yeah. Okay. 90, 17, 24. Nice. So that's a plus one to whoever is about to attempt the nature or diplomacy check for gathering the herd. So I rolled a 10 plus the one is an 11. An 11. Eee. That is a fail Oh no The herd is still scattered about They're bumping into each other They're bellowing and they're getting a bit surly So someone else can immediately attempt this check if they'd like But it can't be Olag because he aided And it can't be AWOL because he aided Looks like it's up to Yelka Looks like it's up to save us Yelka Yelka's like oh and then tries to do like her best rug. I was like, it is okay, friends. We are taking you to safety. Oh, man. Oh, no. The cold streak continues. Here's the thing that happened. I rolled my D20. It rolled off of my notebook and onto the table, which is almost like rolling off the table. And you don't count that rolls that roll off the table. That's interference. You said it rolled over your book and then onto the table? Yeah, but it was like it was... That's on the table. My dice touched a microphone. I think that means we can just re-roll, right? I know my dice is on the table, but I don't think that it's on the table. We do have hero points, you guys. I always forget that. Yes, and I should mention that too as your GM. Yeah, so can I use one to re-roll this? Might be a good idea. Because I rolled a three, which would be an eight total. So I will use a hero point because this is very important. It might be very important, yes. So I will spin my hero point. Thank you for that reminder. And try again. Come on. It was better, but not by much. That's an 11 total. That's exactly. That's exactly what I got. We just got this twice now. That's not enough. And let me tell you something. We're failing. We're stressed out. This was a three-hour activity, and you have now passed three hours here and one hour at the camp with no success. So four of the eight hours you have to prepare are gone, and you have not completed a task yet. Listen, I think we might need to split up. Yeah. Yeah. Actually all of these That is not a bad Instinct but all of these activities Would require at least four people To kind of help out Okay then we should stay together Well at least I thought we really needed the herd but at least We have to clear the trail right Otherwise no one could even walk to the ceremony We have to keep people from getting too drunk Because if they're too drunk how will we Leave efficiently It'll be fun Don't worry about the spirits. Let's get the trail clean so we can at least get there in the first place. How do we... Can we go back and retry any of the things we failed at, Jared? Or is it there just... That's it. It's over. You certainly can, but keep in mind, you only have so many hours. You only have four hours left. And it takes three hours to herd? Well, it took you three hours to fail at herding. Damn, that was harsh as hell. That was a harsh herding burn. It's a herd burn. Your herding sucks. Okay. so uh what will it be clear the trail or dilute the spirits or trying one of the earlier tasks over again so if we try the herd if we try to get the herd again we can only attempt one of the other tasks how long is clearing the trail i'm not gonna how you think it would take about two hours so yeah all we can do is move on we have no other option okay like if we do the herd again. Oh, we could do herd and spirits and then have a shitty trail. Maybe. I don't know. Maybe I'm assuming it takes an hour to do the spirits. I want to clear the trail. Let's clear the trail. Alright. Alright. It says clear the trail. So clearing the trail basically means that along the route that the broken tusk will take, there are no fallen trees that would impede the mammoths. There are no hazards or dangers. It doesn't matter because the mammoths aren't coming anyway. because we can't hurt them. Yeah. Well, I mean, all of this will still happen. It just won't happen with efficiency if you fail at doing it, right? Right. So clearing the trail is a survival check. Who would like to make that check? I'm a plus five. I'm a plus five as well. I'm a plus six. Oh, okay. My last plus six didn't get us very far, but I'm going to try again. Okay. I'm not going to aid. I'm just going to be there to try to attempt the check again if you fail. No. I rolled a three for a nine. What the hell is going on? This is insane. Someone else can attempt it right now. Someone else can attempt it right now to make sure this isn't lost time. Survival. Okay. What do you have, Olag? I have a plus three, so. I'll do it. Or a plus five. All right. AWOL will step in and try to attempt. Come on. We got to get one of these. One of these. 14 14 is not enough Would you like to use a hero point? Why didn't I use my hero point? Well because we still have to do another thing So save that hero point I will use a hero point on this Come on, come on Natural 20 There we go Natural 20 on the hero point Jesus Christ What happens? You have now critted this task Which means It's zero time We did it in zero minutes We did it in zero minutes So here's the deal He sung a song and all the birds from the trees Like flew down And they all just started picking stuff up And he just danced in the middle of them While they cleaned the trail for us Along the trail You find An enormous Like wasp type nest but it's not the size of a normal one it's like the size of a cow oh you can see it moving there are large like enormous insects kind of yeah kind of like crawling around inside and because you have critically succeeded i can tell you that you are able to move this nest off the trail without any problem at all but you can also if you choose kill these creatures and uh you know eliminate any chance that they could cause uh people trouble later and if anybody wants to know something about the creatures they can recall knowledge all right i'll do that i'll Or call knowledge nature? Me too. A 14. Same, 14. A 14 is enough to know that these are blood seekers. They are enormous mosquito-type insects that latch onto your body and then drain you of blood. Ew. Okay. I was about to feel bad. Right now, they're still all in the nest because you guys have very carefully, quietly, and without shaking it, you've moved it off the trail. Do you wish to fight with them Or do you wish to just leave the nest Off the trail Do you wish to kill them Or just move it off the trail I'll vote for kill them How aggressive are they They are definitely aggressive At someone that disturbs their nest If there was any You guys have not disturbed it yet Well my question is If the crit allows us to move the hive Off of the trail Does the Crick give us any special advantage to the combat? Yes, you'll have plus two to your initiative. I don't think that's enough. Can we get it far enough away that we think we'll have a pretty good chance of not disturbing it? I think that's the case. Yeah, okay. Killing animals is anathema to Raga, right? Mosquitoes aren't animals and don't belong as part of this ecosystem. Yeah, I was going to say. Nothing but evil. I want to just back up Raga here. As a druid of the animal order, you definitely will not kill these animals who currently are not attacking you. I mean, it is anathema to you. So if you want to role play breaking your anathema while you're still level one, feel free to do so. Even though I'm strongly implying you probably shouldn't do that. And I wouldn't. Raga would not. They are not hurting anyone. We move them off the trail. If nobody disturbs them, we will be fine. That's fine. And that is, I was stating Joe's opinion, not AWOL's opinion. AWOL will take Raga's lead. Marielu wishes we could kill them, but Raga, Marielu wants to kill them. I know. So do you just move them off the trail? Is that what I'm hearing? Yes. I think so. Very good. Two hours pass, and you have earned three preparation points. all right what is a preparation point it's super important something you don't have a lot of so far and that is where we're going to end it for today a thrilling preparation point it's a rules based cliffhanger we only have two hours left we need more peepees we only have one hour left and uh we have to decide two hours by my count two hours by my count oh oh yeah you're right you're right two hours left gotta water down that booze gotta water down that booze Legendary stories, awe-inspiring sound, and endless adventure. And on the Vulgar History podcast, we're going to be looking at the balls, the gowns, and all the scandal of the Regency era. Vulgar History is a women's history podcast, and our Regency era series will be focusing on the most rebellious women of this time. That includes Jane Austen herself, who is maybe more radical than you might have thought. We'll also be talking about queer icons like Anne Lister, scientists like Mary Anning and Ada Lovelace, as well as other scandalous actresses, royal mistresses, rebellious princesses, and other lesser-known figures who made history happen in England in the Regency era. Listen to Vulgar History wherever you get podcasts.
