Summary

The O'Reilly Update covers Virginia's congressional redistricting vote that will add four Democratic seats, an extended ceasefire with Iran amid naval blockade tensions, Federal Reserve chairman nominee Kevin Warsh's Senate confirmation challenges, and England's passage of a tobacco and vapes bill banning sales to anyone born after 2008.

Insights
  • Political spending disparities in redistricting campaigns can be substantial ($70M Democrat vs $20M Republican in Virginia), yet narrow margins still determine outcomes with significant congressional seat implications
  • International diplomatic tensions persist despite ceasefires, with competing interpretations of agreements (U.S. blockade vs Iranian ceasefire violation claims) creating ongoing conflict risks
  • Federal Reserve leadership transitions face political obstacles beyond nomination votes, including DOJ investigations and procedural delays that can extend sitting chairman tenures
  • Legislative approaches to public health (tobacco/vape restrictions) are expanding internationally with age-based prohibitions that effectively eliminate future consumer markets for regulated products

Bill O'Reilly here. You are listening to the O'Reilly Update. Coming up next, the news with Mike Slater. Thank you, Bill. It is Wednesday, April 22nd, 2026. Here's what's happening today in America. Obama wins, ceasefire extended, Warsh questioned, and a landmark bill in England. That's all coming up and Bill's going to be here with your message of the day. But first, Virginia voters went to the polls to answer whether or not they should redraw the congressional district lines. Right now, the congressional makeup of Virginia is six Democrats and five Republicans. It's about right for a state that votes about 52% Democrat. But if this measure passes, then the congressional districts would be redrawn 10 to 1 Democrat. They would be one of the most gerrymandered states in the country. The Obama-led effort to redraw the maps spent $70 million. That's more than they spent on the governor's race. The Republicans spent only $20 million. The yes vote won, not by much, but they won. So Virginia will gain four Democrat seats in the United States Congress. Now, another redistricting news, Florida is hosting a special election next week to talk about redistricting their state. They could gain two to five congressional seats in Florida. The commander in chief has extended the ceasefire. He said, based on the fact that the government of Iran is seriously fractured, not unexpectedly so, and upon the request of the prime minister of Pakistan, we have been asked to hold our attack on the country of Iran until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal. I have therefore directed our military to continue the blockade and in all other respects remain ready and able and will therefore extend the ceasefire until such time as their proposal submitted and discussions are concluded one way or the other. The foreign minister of Iran said that the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports is an act of war and thus a violation of the ceasefire. He said Iran knows how to resist bullying. The president's nominee for the chairman of the Federal Reserve, Kevin Warsh, went in front of a Senate committee yesterday. An interesting twist to all this, Powell, the current chairman, his term ends on May 15th. Warsh's nomination has to get a majority support from the Senate Banking Committee before it reaches the Senate floor. Well, Senator Tom Till, a Republican on his way out, is a decisive vote. And he said he will not advance Warsh's nomination until the Department of Justice ends its investigation to Powell and his alleged misuse of funds in renovating the Federal Reserve building. Then there's the question, Powell could technically stay on the Federal Reserve board after his term as chairman. And that's only happened once before in 1948. So there's a lot on the table. A bill in England passed Parliament. Anyone under the age of 17 will never be allowed to buy cigarettes ever. It's called the tobacco and vapes bill. It's illegal for anyone born after 2008 to buy tobacco in any way. It would also make it illegal to vape in a car with children outside schools and hospitals. On this Wednesday, this coming Saturday, I'll be attending the White House Correspondents' Dinner in D.C. because it should be an interesting story. For the first time as president, Donald Trump will be present at the function, and already disenchantment has appeared. 94-year-old Dan Rather and 92-year-old Sam Donaldson both signed a letter urging the press attendees to, quote, forcefully demonstrate opposition to President Trump at the dinner. Now, I'm not sure how you do that. Secret Service will be there. But I am digesting the word forcefully. I worked for Dan Rather and was in proximity to Donaldson at ABC News. Both men are liberal lions who did not hide their ideology from viewers. They carry that legacy to this day. Hopefully the press on Saturday evening will respect the office of the presidency. If they do not, I will confront them. Not a threat, an advisement. Ratheron Donaldson will not be there, but I do expect some inappropriate displays by ardent media leftists. If those happened, there will be a response from your humble correspondent. This isn't about Donald Trump. It's about the office he holds. A no disrespect zone will be enforced. I'm Bill O'Reilly. I approve the message by writing it. You can reach me, Bill at BillOReilly.com, Bill at BillOReilly.com. Name in town if you wish to opine. Okay, let's go to the mail. John I watched Jake Tappen and I think his coverage is pretty even toward Trump all things considered I mean you have to admit there a lot to question about Trump administration Well we have a gentleman disagreement So John Tapper was on Stephen Colbert Let's take a look at that. Okay, come on. You've got to live in a real world here. Tapper hates Trump, and he's not fair to Trump. But I respect your opinion. Michael, left and right people are going to seek out sources of information that support and validate their ideology. Increasingly, those sources are social media. That's why we did this segment tonight. You're no spin broadcast of the high points of my week. Well, we're not involved with any of the agenda driven ideology at all. I got a letter from a guy who says, hey, how come you don't say you're conservative? Because I'm not. I'm not an ideologue by any stretch. I'm an independent, number one, and then I lean traditional in my points of view, generally speaking. But I'm not an ideologue. We don't do that here. And we've been very successful not doing it. Rosanna Salient. Dear Mr. O, I hope you're doing well. I consider myself a devout Catholic, love my faith and my church. However, I much dislike the Pope's comments. I'd be more positively receiving his statements if he had previously condemned the Iranian regime. They never do that. They don't do it because they figured that that might lead to more violence. So they just don't do it. You've got to understand, you know, what the modus operandi is. Use a little Latin. In a moment, something you might not know. Financial stress is hitting an all-time high. Millions of Americans are stretched thin with no extra money, no room to breathe. And this isn't just lower income households. Middle class families are also running out of options. You don't need another loan or to consider bankruptcy. You need a strategy. That's why I like done with debt. Now the O'Reilly Update brings you something you might not know. 137 years ago today more than 60 settlers crowded onto 2 million acres of land previously reserved for Native Americans Soon hundreds of towns and homesteads populated the Great Plains Here is the story behind the Oklahoma land rush. Initially considered unsuitable for colonization, the Indian Territory of Oklahoma was thought to be an ideal place to relocate tribes who were forcibly removed from their traditional lands in the East. But modern technology and irrigation soon made Oklahoma valuable for cattle and crops. Farmers then pressured the U.S. government to open the land for settlement. In 1889, President Benjamin Harrison agreed to do that. At high noon on April 22nd, a lone cannonball was fired from a nearby fort. 60,000 settlers rushed into the territory, many on horseback. Folks staked their claims by planting flags, erecting tents, or even sleeping on the ground. The so-called boomers paid a dollar an acre in filing fees. The largest area a single family could seize was 160 acres. And remember, this land was stolen from the Indians. Towns like Oklahoma City sprang into existence almost overnight. The first Oklahoma land rush was also plagued by greed and fraud. Cases involving Sooners, people who had entered the territory before the legal date and time of the land rush, overloaded the courts for years. The government attempted to operate and run the land with regulations, but eventually settled for a lottery. By 1905, Americans owned most of the land in Oklahoma. Two years later, the area entered the Union as a new state. And here's something else you might not know. The Oklahoma land rush is one of the most ethnically diverse events in American history. Settlers included whites, Europeans, freed blacks, Asians, immigrants from the Caribbean. Even some Native Americans took part. Back in a moment.
