- Strategic withholding of information can be justified as protective but creates vulnerability when hidden truths eventually surface
- Power dynamics shift when previously missing authority figures return, threatening established hierarchies and creating new dangers
- Survival in post-collapse societies requires adopting false identities and navigating complex political/economic systems with limited resources

Chapter 17. Dining with the devil. Part 1 of 3. Some of the unlucky ones, they know me as one of the enforcers. That's right. The angel of death. And, well, if that don't ring any bells, I'm fucking angel Tanudo. Senior. Angel Senior? What is she death to? That's what I said. Your angel's dad. Was. What do you know about him? Not much. Just recognise the name. Uh huh. Look, we'll have plenty of time for this later. Vera, I think you've done enough for one day. Vincent, you should head to the infirmary. I said I'm fine. You should rethink that. You never know where this one's been. Excuse me? Tanudo, I know you've come a long way. Been on the road for quite some time, right? Why don't you head down to the kitchen? I'm sure Chef will be happy to see you back and make you something special. Oh, look. He's trying to get rid of me, huh? Let me take care of this. Oh, we are now. Ah, I guess I do have quite a bit of the road still on me. But I'm dying to hear all about a new little addition to the family here. It's been a while since we've had, you know, some fresh blood. Amiga to find out all about you, Missy. Oh, I'm sure. Yeah, since you're all done here, new little blackburn. Well, no, me and you go have a little chat. What do you say? I have a better idea. Why don't we have Chef set up a proper family meal? May take a few days to prepare, but how long has it been since two heads of household have been under the same roof? Could invite members close to the area to attend? Would be nice for everyone to catch up. Hmm. Why not? I like the sound that I... Flows in our service seafood. Well, I'll let Chef know. And, uh, be sure to sit us together. I got a lot of questions for you, little Vera. Likewise. I'm sorry. Once again, so we can all hear you? Likewise. Oh, yeah. Looking forward to it. He's a bit hard of hearing. Too many gunshots. Just great. You couldn't have warned me he was here? Why would I need to do something like that? Your angel's brother from California? You never thought to mention that before? Why would I need to do something like that? Ow. Where are you going? I still have questions. Well, I don't have answers for you. Let him go. But I... Vera? I'm done training her, right? No more? This is it? It's over. Good. Why didn't you mention any of this to me? If you knew Angel was his brother, he was a part of the family's... Not here. Then where? Come. Grab your katana. We're free to talk in here. The walls are the house of many years, but not my office. Why? Why didn't you say anything sooner? You knew Vincent had ties to Westport. Before we were ever called that, but you knew. He didn't say anything either. I thought we were done with the secret bullshit. If you knew he might be connected, it would inform how you interacted with Vincent. And I couldn't have that. Couldn't have what? He says good a liar as his father. He kept so much from you already. Vincent would have been able to read you like a book and keep his cards close. It was better to watch you two unabated. Why? What are you looking for? The way you were interrogating him in there, it seems like you already suspect something. You've spent far more time with Vincent than I have. What do you think? What would he continue to lie about? He would only continue if he thought whatever he's hiding could still have an impact. What was he doing before we even met? He wouldn't be working with the Republic, would he? Not likely. Even the Tannudos have some standards. Then it would have to involve Westport. Or Michael? Oh my god! Did he- was he the one? We don't exactly know where Vincent went before he was picked up. His task did in fact take him to Lake Matthews. He was telling the truth there. And any more than that, it is dangerous to assume. But I have to find out more. If this was an unsanctioned vendetta on someone high profile like that? Whoever did it would be removed from the family. If Vincent did, I swear I'll- Do you see now why I didn't tell you my suspicions? We have to maintain control, even when our emotions get the better of us. And still, I'm not certain Vincent was the one. Angel's senior just returned from a task as well on the East Coast. So there's a chance he was the one. But in order to do anything about it, I need actual evidence first. Could senior have done that at his age? Never underestimate the Angel of Death. Why would they go after Michael? What did he ever do to them? It might have something to do with how your mother published the story of survival. Michael wasn't involved in that. The version that was released. Do you remember what it said about how Angel Jr. died? It happened when the original tower collapsed, I think. And Michael saw him on the roof when the building fell. That's the last mention of him. They think Michael was responsible for his death? I believe so. But- but that's not true. Angel Jr. survived. Didn't he? That part was left out of the publication. No one else would know what happened next. Do you? Prior to leaving the colony, I found out the truth. It took some digging through the original journals before CJ had them locked up. And? Angel was dying from the effects of the fall. But in the end, he was executed by another family member, Claire Amsel, who went by the alias Scratch. Apparently there is even video proving it, but I never saw the tape. Around the same time, another member was murdered by her as well. Dery Blackburn. Fingers dad? The same. Have you told anyone? Who else knows? It would only cause more problems, infighting between family members. Scratch is dead, so there was no retribution to be made. But there still is apparently. Michael died because of it. I can't change what happened to him, but I can at least try to punish those involved. You knew all of this and didn't say anything. You told Nick- I told Nick exactly what he needed to hear. That boy is a powder keg of emotion just waiting to go off. But he has a right to know- And he will, when you tell him. But only when we're certain, and only when we have proof. Why would any of this matter to you? Did you even know, Michael? Our interactions were limited when I was there with your mother. I'm more concerned with how all this relates to the family. That's the only reason you care how it affects you? It affects you too. Vincent went through a whole lot of trouble to bring you here. T'Nudos only get involved if it directly benefits themselves. Whether it was to carry favor like he claims or something else. I want to know exactly what they're up to. I have a feeling this is part of something bigger. What could they really do? You're in charge. No one here can harm you or any other family member, right? You see all those rings on T'Nudos' hand? Are Demis? He had five. Four of those belong to other family members. Taken as part of an internal vendetta. It's the reason he's called the Angel of Death. Wait. But the rules I keep hearing over and over. There are always exceptions. Those other members turned on the family, threatened to expose who we were, conspired and killed other members. T'Nudos' senior was the one chosen to fulfill the task. Four targets, four cities, one night. All of that by himself? You understand why we can never underestimate him. But could he ever do that to you? And why would he even want to? He was next in line to be the patriarch. But he went missing while on a task. Everyone thought he was dead. So when I returned, I was chosen instead. I don't think he has ever let that go. What if you step down, resign or whatever? I couldn't do that. You wouldn't want that either. Things are better without him in charge. I understand and respect the power of this place and our people. He would only use it for his benefit. Why couldn't you tell me any of this before? When you go swimming with sharks, you better make sure there's no blood in the water. No one can know. I need you to trust me on this. Another shark. I'm more one of those keep the balance of the ocean kind. Not the man-eaters. Easy for you to say what about this dinner? I'm gonna have to be right next to him and Vincent. Play along. Continue like you know nothing about their involvement with Westport or Michael. And when we know more, we'll take the next steps. We? It pains me to say that you're the only one here I can trust right now. I don't know how deep it might go or who else is involved. I'm gonna need your help. Will you? Of course. That's my girl. Maybe don't go that far, you. Fair enough. You should go get some rest. You still have more sessions in the morning. You're doing better than anyone expected. But this dinner and helping you, I can... Focus on your training for the next few days. Don't let anything else distract you. When I need you, I'll tell you. It's gonna be looming over everything. Knowing all this now and then eventually having to sit next to them? It's not gonna be easy. You'll be fine. Trust your instincts. It's in your blood. Only half of it. You have strength coming from both sides. Yeah. We'll see. The end. The end. Descendants will continue after a word from our sponsors. Construction shapes our communities. Search MTD ready with zero. And now we continue with descendants. Wow, you're back early. Training was cut short. Ugh. Didn't go well. It was fine. Doesn't look fine. Why did they give you an F? See minus? No. That never happened. It's something else. So what's going on? I don't want to talk about it. Obviously you do. And please, I've been cooped up in here by myself for days. I can only read books for so long. I don't know how well does it. I think they'd at least give you a frickin DVD player. Oh, come on. Tell me anything. What if I said I might even have some news of my own? Swap stories? Yeah, come on. Yeah, come on. There actually is something I want to know. Where did you pick up Vincent? When you, you know, took him in. That. Why? It's important. Okay, well... After we picked you up and took off in the helicopter... Kidnapped me and stole our helicopter. But go on. We landed to fill up on water at the reservoir in the hills east of Westport. Figured it was a good place to take a rest before catching up with the train. I was keeping watch when Vincent showed up from the tree line. Then started cleaning off in the water. He didn't notice me. While you know the rest, darted, dragged, and flew him, and everyone else to the meetup point. Where you ran into him. Was that anywhere near Lake Matthews? I mean, I think so. We weren't really charting our path. I wouldn't be able to tell you exactly where on the map. Why? It's just something that's been on my mind. Why can't you tell me? I don't know if I should. Another family secret. You're trusting absolutely everything they feed you. How do you know they're not just using you? Same thing happened to me at Prim. That's how the people empower maintain control. They make you believe you are part of something bigger. He wouldn't do that. He, your dad, who you just met, the head of House of Lies, a killer at that. What did he tell you now? Oliver might know who was involved in Michael's attack. Michael? Oh, Nick's sort of dad back in Westport. Didn't Oliver say he didn't know who did it? So either he was lying to you then or is now. He didn't want to let on before he knew more. So then what? You think Vincent might be the one who killed Michael. That's why you're asking where we picked him up? Or maybe it was his dad, Angel T'Nudo Sr. Wow. Everyone here has some serious daddy issues. You were hearing all of this, right? And these are the people you want to be more involved with. I know. I know. I get how this looks. Sarah, I may be your only impartial voice of reason on this, but I hope you're finally starting to understand how fucked up this place is and these people are. Part of me thinks maybe I can help change that. Always trying to save people, aren't you? It's admirable. Thanks, I guess. But some things just aren't worth saving. Please listen to me get out while you still can. I'm not there yet. But I do understand why you think that. I just have a hard time giving up. I can relate. I'm still here, aren't I? Oh. Honestly, it may not be possible for either one of us to leave. At this point, I'm sure someone would try and stop us at the front gate. Maybe there's another way. How? I told you I have news. Check this out. Come over this way. Do you hear that? Hear what? It gets real quiet in this room. If you focus, there's a whistle. So, put your hand in this corner. For that air coming through here. You feel that? Maybe. Something's behind the wood paneling. It doesn't move at all. Not yet. But if you pull down the trim and slide it over. What? There's a passageway? I know. Crazy, right? Took me a hell of a long time to figure out how to open it. Have you gone through? Nope. You know where this leads? Nope. I didn't want to cause any more problems. Didn't want to give the killers that live here any more reason to do something to me. They'll look down there. It goes quite a ways. The length of the hall, at least. Does that mean someone could get into our room? Maybe. I'm not really covered in dust. Doesn't look like it's been used in a long while. It's pretty small. Not many would fit through there. Even more secrets in this place. Uh-huh. What are you doing? You don't want to go down there? What if it's a way out? Wherever that goes, I doubt it's anywhere good. And I told you, I can't go. Not now. Look, you may not trust Oliver, but I think I do. And he needs me. Who knows? After this, there's a chance he won't stay here either. So, shit's about to go down? It's that bad, huh? The Michael Killing runs deep. Maybe? I don't know. But I have to see this through. And if not for me or the family, then for Nick. He deserves to know what happened. Could make up for everything else that's come between us. Okay. Okay. That's what you want, then. I'll stay here, too. Moiko. We'll go together. I... I may not have shown it, but I appreciate your perspective. It'd be easy for me to get lost here. And you haven't let that happen. And here I was thinking I was continually annoying you. Now, I didn't say you weren't doing that, too. Hey. So, if it helps at all from my perspective, maybe the best plan for now is just, Lay low. Keep up with your training and let your props take the lead on whatever dangerous shit is going down. You need to avoid the tenudos as much as possible. Yes. But that's going to be impossible. They're planning a big family dinner. Everyone's going to be there, and I'm seated right next to them. Well, isn't that going to be awkward? Anyway, you can get out of it. Not really. Seems like I have to. Still, could get interesting? It's not often you get to dine with the devil. Wow. Look at all, then. So cool. Oh. You're back, finally. Yeah. Had to be thorough, you know. Check it out. Bison. A giant herd. Damn. There's so many of them. I read somewhere that these were almost extinct at some point. Doesn't look like it now. Even with the infected hunting them, they're thriving out here. So... You good? Should we find a seat somewhere? Chad? Oh. I am starving. Can we at least do this in a dining car? I thought about that, but they only take republic dollars or UA money. We have neither. Well, we do now. So, come on. What? Wait. Where did you... Someone left their bag open while I was chatting them up. No one noticed. Here. Well, you stole it? Is that right? Just a different kind of survival now. There are no rules. Hmm. Okay, well, I mean, we do have to eat. Well, look. It makes you feel any better. Hey, we're being a jerk to another contractor. Um... 200, 220 republic dollars. Okay. That should be enough, right? Like, I have any idea. Let's go find out. Oh, perfect. There's a table open with no one next to it. Come on. What's this? What'd you find? United American Times. UA's newspaper. Uh, apparently. The stories in your fascinating, so many places and events I've never heard of. So much information all in one space. And they make one weekly. What can I get for you, gentlemen? Oh, um... Is there a menu that we could look at? Behind the napkin holder. I'll come back when you're ready. Thanks. Hey, um... Should I stash my bag somewhere? It's just got my moda pistol in it, still. Relax. Well, okay, just play it cool. They're not going through bags. They probably checked every home before boarding anyways. Okay, yeah, you're right, you're right. Well, uh, let's see what we can eat with, uh, what we got. Uh, not much. Look at these prices. A hundred bucks for a vegetable soup. Oh, man. You used to be 82, but they crossed it out. Inflation may be hitting Republic dollars. Interesting. Huh. I wonder if it has something to do with the UA setting up more of their own fuel refineries. The newspaper had an article that Republic used to supply all of it. That was their major income. I don't really care why. All I know is we got to make this money last. I don't think that I could lift anymore. That's the last thing we need to do is to get good. Maybe we split a bowl of soup? Ah, if we have to. I mean, honestly, I was hoping we'd get something more than that. I'm starving. So, how long do you think it would take to travel to where we need to go? Well, there's a large map in this newspaper with the jobless things. Probably why there are so many workers on the train. Says the closest place to our destination on our route is a city called Justice. It's located on the western side of the Republic. They renamed the old Texas cities. I think this one used to be called El Paso. It's a relatively new map, too. Last one I saw didn't show the Republic border expanding this far west. Now, it kind of sneaks off around the rail line here. Before I left, I remember hearing some shit about them taking over New Land. You know, that's probably it. Attacked one of our trains, too. Anything about that in your paper? Well, a train from Westport? You never mentioned that. It happened right before I left. It was a big deal. Maybe it died down. I have no idea. But what I do know is that the attack cut off all trade on our rail line. There aren't many articles about what's going on with the Republic in this newspaper. Only the job offers. Yeah. Of course they leave all that out. If there's an ongoing conflict with Westport, you a's not getting involved or playing ignorant. Who knows. Oh, hey, the server's coming back. You decide what you'll be having? Um, yeah. Well, we'll have the soup. But, um, is there any way that you might be able to bring, like, an extra bowl? Really? We're stretched a little thin. That's why we have to travel so far for work. I mean, you understand. You know what? There's plenty of soup left. Wouldn't take much to fill an extra bowl. Why? Are you serious? Thanks so much. That really helps out. I'll be right back. Look at you. Hey. What can I say? I don't make this money last, right? How long is this train ride anyways? Um, it's two and a half days travel with an extra day layover once we get across the border. That's what I gathered from listening to other people's conversations. But, uh, it'll take us right into the city of justice. Uh, that's the closest stop that we have to get to your mom in Lechigia. Still, a bit of a waste from there, so we'll have to figure something out, I guess. The Republic is very large. They can't actively patrol off it. So, our biggest hurdle will be finding a way out of the city. These uniforms are one thing. They might give us a chance to get away, but... We'll need to figure out the details for our cover. I mean, most of the people here are building contractors, laborers. Yeah, maybe for the Republic expansion you mentioned that no one seems to be talking about. Here we go. Here you are. It's really hot. May we let it cool down first? Thanks again. You have no idea. Of course. We've all been there. Ooh. It smells so good. If you say so. Okay, so, our cover story. We're general contractors heading to Justice El Paso or whatever, for work, right? We can handle general day labor. From the postings I read in here, there's not a lot of qualifications needed. So, dig holes in here. Hmm. Same simple. Where are we coming from? Hey, girl. Used to be called Mississippi. It's the state closest to where we picked up these badges. Best bet we'd be from there. Also, heard a few others on the train mentioned that they were from Jackson, which is its biggest city, fairly low income, high crime, and violence a lot of people migrating away. Anything else we need? What's it like living there? I have no idea where to begin with that. Hmm. Keep it small and vague, right? The area you grew up in, westboard. It's probably not all that different, right? A refurbished old-world housing filled with people just trying to live, some are desperate for work and food. And, oh, they still deal with the infected at the border. They're infected border zone is a long, Mississippi river, right? Mm-hmm. Yeah, the entire U.A.'s western border uses the river as their protection barrier. Since you already know how to be a soldier, maybe use it as your cover. Former security detail. I'm gonna go with mechanical or electrical. It's really whatever we're best suited for. And with you, that's damn near anything, right? Oh. I appreciate that. Hey, I give credit where credit is though. So, cover seems easy enough. Anything else you hear on the train? I mean, you got a hell of a lot more than I did. Hmm. Not much else. Honestly, I didn't get very far. Apparently there's a VIP car. Had the official red republic seal on the front. Got to be someone high ranking in there. Really? Lots of guards were around it, too. Kinda looked like those guys. Oh, shit. What? They're coming. That must be the VIP. Who is? How should I know? Make a hole. Who is I? Well, now that's not necessary. Everyone, stay seated. Wait. Well, I know that guy. I saw him on the news back in Westburg. He's from the republic. Someone big like someone in charge. Yeah, no kidding. With that kind of protection. Okay, look. I'll just play a cool. And focus on me. Oh, boy. Okay. Uh-uh. He's coming this way. I see him just relax. I'm shaking. Chill. Man, okay, just chill. Hmm. This table will work. You mind getting the servant? You two. Get up. Who? Who? What? Us? Will you let them eat for crying out loud? Security sweep. On your feet. Hand me your bag. Hey, hey, look. Whatever, man. We can just leave. I don't really feel like getting my junk grabbed all over again for the second time. Yeah, yeah, they already checked us at boarding. See? Now, would you please leave these fine people alone? Hmm. Yes, sir. You, too. Post at the doors. You will have to excuse my head of security there. It tends to be a little overpricotious. Uh, it's okay. Yes, Olga, we're just here for the soup. That's all we want. Really? Have you tried it? I've smelted. But no. I have not tried it yet. We're still in the hotel. Is it because that is when it's the worst? Server. Yes, sir. Why don't you bring my new friends here? A couple of fillets. They have excellent steaks here. How would you like yours done? I usually... However you're having it, honestly. Medium. Smart choice. And three glasses of your best red wine. Should pair well. All right. All right. Wow. Wow. Thank you. Thank you. Right away, Mr. Friedrich. Here. I'll take those soups. What are you two come over? Have a seat at my table. Save our necks from having to crane over. I'm always interested in the perspective of you, acitizens, like yourself. It's so high, Mr. Friedrich. I'm sorry. I didn't get to introduce myself. Wasn't given the chance. Aaron Friedrich. You can just call me Friedrich. Everyone does. Right. Oh, I'm Jess. And this is... Chris. I've seen you somewhere before. Haven't I? I don't know if that's a good or bad thing. Well, what do you do? Yeah, I mean, you seem important with all of them swamming around. It's kind of refreshing to meet people who aren't familiar with the roles in the Republic. I am the chancellor. Cool. What's that? You really don't know. You're not just humoring me. Oh, no. Not at all. Yeah. I mean, it's hard enough just trying to survive, right? Don't have enough energy to keep track of everyone else's business, you know? Oh. I respect that. You know, part of me should be so lucky to be able to converse with such impartial minds. How's that? Well, for instance, you have no idea that you're having lunch with the head of the Republic's government. You? I'm not going to be able to do that. I'm not going to be able to do that. I'm not going to be able to do that. To be continued in the next episode of We're Alive Descendants. And now a word from our sponsors.
