Summary

Bryce Crawford analyzes Luke Chapter 15, exploring three parables: the lost sheep, lost coin, and prodigal son. The episode emphasizes God's value for human souls, the importance of repentance, and warns against spiritual pride like the older son who refused to celebrate his brother's return.

Insights
  • God's valuation of human life is demonstrated through Christ's sacrifice, making every person worthy of redemption and celebration
  • Spiritual pride and self-righteousness (represented by the older son) can prevent believers from participating in God's joy over others' repentance
  • True faith manifests through motivated action to bring others into God's kingdom, not through works-based judgment of others' deservingness
  • Sheep metaphor illustrates human dependence on God; without divine guidance, people are inherently vulnerable and lost
  • The parable structure uses relatable scenarios (lost keys, lost wallet) to make theological concepts accessible and emotionally resonant

Well, as always, we're reading the Word of God today. We're going to be in Luke chapter 15. We got the parable of the lost sheep, lost corn, and the prodigal son. This one might be a quicker episode because I have done an episode on this exact passage before. But we will briefly go through it. Now, the tax collectors in the centers were all drawing near to him. And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled saying, this man received sinners and eats with them. So he told them this parable. What does he... He said, what man of you, having a hundred sheep if he has lost one of them, does not leave the 99 in the open country and go after the one that has lost until he finds it. And when he has found it, he lays on his shoulders rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors saying to them, rejoice with me for I've found my sheep that was lost. Just so I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over run, one sinner who repents and over 99 righteous persons who need no repentance. Draw near to Jesus. Who was the lost sheep? I was the lost sheep. You were or are the lost sheep, depending on where you're at in your faith journey. Draw near to Jesus. Sheep are stupid. They're in need of a shepherd. You and I are stupid without God and idiots. And we need Jesus in our life. Does the parable of the lost coin or what woman having ten silver coins if she loses one coin? Doesn't light a lamp and sweep the house and seek diligently until she finds it. And when she has found it, she calls to her friends and neighbors saying, rejoice with me for I've found the coin that I have lost. Just so I tell you, there is joy before angels of God over one sinner who repents. Jesus looked for me because we were valuable to him. Jesus looked for you because you're valuable to him. And so we must treat Jesus in a celebratory manner when we have been found and when others have been found and they repent. The same way we would frantically lose our wallet or our car keys and we run around the house and we try to find him and bam, we find him. We celebrate and rejoice. Thank you. Stress, relief, weight off my chest. Thank you Jesus that I have found my keys. And lastly the parable of the prodigal son. There's a man that has two sons and the father gives him a share of the property. He says, you're dead to me. Give me my inheritance before you're dead. Gives it to him and he squanders it. He just spends it. Food, prostitutes, parties and is so desperate and broke that he's willing to eat with the pigs and pigs are deemed unclean that day. Can you imagine the son when he realizes he needs his father trying to come up with a speech. Just say, look, I don't need to be your son anymore. I'll just be your servant. I'll be your slave. And as he's limping home, the father embraces him with a hug. He says, get my robe. That robe, the father's robe covering the son and represents the robe of righteousness. I get the ring and let's celebrate for my son who was lost has now been found. But it's so funny because in verse 25 we never think of the older son. Now his older son was in the field. And as he came and drew near to the house, he heard the music and dancing. He called one of the servants and asked them what these things meant. And he said to him, your brother has come and your father has killed the fat and calf because he has received him. Back safe and sound, but he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and treated him, but he answered his father, look, these many years I've served you and I've never disobeyed your command. Yet you never gave me a young goat that I might celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours came who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed the fat and calf for him. And he said to him, son, you are always with me and all that is mine is yours. He was fitting to celebrate and be glad for this your brother was dead and is alive. He was lost and is found. When you don't see people as valuable to God, you then become the Pharisee. You think that you are deserving of things that you aren't deserving of. What is the price that God puts on your life? His own life. God gave his son to buy you back. He ransomed you. He set you free from captivity and found people, find people. If you have been found by God, you are going to be motivated by love to go bring everyone else you can with you to the kingdom of God. And so don't just sit in pride and say, well, I've done, I've been saved by God and so no one else deserves the same thing or I deserve to be celebrated. Your faith is in your works. Woe to you. Submit to God. Rely on him. Trust on him. And you will see freedom in your life. And I pray that Luke chapter 15 was an encouragement to you. We'll see you guys tomorrow for Luke chapter 16.
