Summary

Vincent Caravella joins Will to answer technical questions about search engines, NAS storage, smart home devices, and home infrastructure. The episode covers practical advice on Kagi search, hard drive costs, electrical safety, plumbing disasters, and the questionable value of internet-connected appliances.

Insights
  • Paid search alternatives like Kagi offer genuinely better search results than Google by filtering spam and reducing AI summaries, making the $5-10/month cost worthwhile for heavy users
  • NAS storage is facing a cost crisis with drive prices at $23/TB (up from $2-6/TB last year), requiring long-term financial planning and acceptance that drive replacement is an ongoing cost
  • Most 'smart' devices add complexity without meaningful benefit; true value comes from localized automation (door sensors triggering lights) rather than cloud-connected appliances
  • DIY electrical work is dangerous and should be avoided in favor of licensed electricians; plumbing mistakes cascade through shared drain systems and create expensive backups
  • Home infrastructure decisions (solar, batteries, electrical service upgrades) require 5-10 year planning horizons and should account for future technology improvements before major investments
Trends
Search engine market consolidation breaking as users abandon Google due to poor AI overviews and spam resultsHard drive shortage and pricing crisis forcing NAS users to delay upgrades and reconsider storage strategiesGrowing skepticism about IoT and smart home devices; users increasingly prefer simple, reliable, non-connected alternativesCommunity solar co-ops emerging as practical alternative to residential solar for renters and homes with poor sun exposureHome automation adoption plateauing due to complexity; successful implementations focus on simple, localized triggers rather than cloud integrationElectrical service upgrades becoming bottleneck for EV adoption and home electrification in older homesShift toward privacy-focused paid services (FastMail, Kagi) as users reject ad-supported models and data harvestingDrain cleaning technology (air guns, power washers) creating new problems in shared plumbing systemsBattery technology improvements making home energy storage more viable, but still expensive relative to grid electricityRoof replacement cycles creating opportunities for solar panel installation, but timing and cost alignment remains challenging

Vincent Caravella~20:00
"you're gonna need it i know it's coming this happened after like the second time i had to just go in and be like yeah oh my god wait right this is going to be an ongoing cost for the rest of eternity replacing drives"
Will~45:00
"if you mess this up you're going to burn your house down like and it won't be like a slow burn the house down like over an indeterminate period time in the future it will go immediately like you will you will burn everything down in like five minutes"
Vincent Caravella~85:00
"what is what is better i think so a couple years ago i bought one of those like low profile kind of air like fans it's like a cycling air in from the outside fan not necessarily like making it cool like an exchange"

Oh, because you guys do the cold open, right? Yeah, we do a cold open. Oh, I forgot. Yeah. Or is that a warm open? Look, man, at this point, who knows? You do a rolling start. Exactly. We're just easing in. So I will continue to berate you that you do not do back. You are literally raw dog in this podcast. You are just no support. Look, I only had to re-record my audio beside one time. That's like being like, look, I used to wear underwear, but I don't wear it anymore because i wore it but nothing really happened my pants never ripped in front and so what was gonna happen so i just don't wear underwear anymore because uh i already got pants on the pants are in the front i don't get it look man my doctor told me i was getting chafing because my underwear was keeping everything too warm in there so warm yes yeah so you you gotta let let everything breathe you gotta get some air movement getting too too many devices recording your room is getting too warm you're gonna stop doing it but i i literally have like panic attacks when one of my i do three recordings for everything and i have like oh i panic when one of them goes out so yeah i just do one i i used to do three i used to do two yeah uh i did 200 episodes of this podcast just doing two i realized that i had terabytes of of crap on a hard drive and i was like i've never needed this i'm gonna stop doing it that's not how backups work no it's fine you delete you look you delete the backup once the thing is posted you keep the sort you keep your you know your file the one file but you delete the you have a rolling backup recording going uh and then you just reuse that so okay it's audio it's so easy to back up this is well but i don't have two easy places to record that aren't on the same machine yeah it's a real i gotta log into this janky web interface it's not great so i've had this has bitten me twice once i forgot to record the first like 10 minutes of the podcast so i had to i had to then go in and like recreate the questions that i asked did you did you did you like oh yeah punch in and redo the oh i punched it and redid the whole thing like did you match it's hard sometimes to match tone if you're like recording after the fact you have to be like right near the mic or away from the mic and it was an enormous pain in the ass yes it took me it would have been easier to i think it was when we had a guest on it might have been the mic mic episode real early and luckily i could hear he didn't wear headphones which is another thing we forgot to ask people not to do so you got bleed so i could hear my questions through in the bleed and then i could just kind of line it back up and it when it worked itself out it was it was not great though it was a real it was a it was a bad time for the other time was when we had a guest on the fos pod and we sent him the documentation for how to do this and the weird thing about the open source founders was they're really technical in the stuff that they're technical about yeah but not at all in everything else oh you just expect them to understand how like recording formats and where to don't wear or wear headphones and sit up on a mic and yeah have a microphone is a good place to start sometimes you'd get the call they'd be like oh was i supposed to have a microphone you're like yeah we would have we had a kit we could have sent you if you said you didn't have a microphone yeah do you have a kit not anymore google paid for a kit that uh you know this is this is the beautiful thing about having the might of one of the six biggest companies in the world or whatever behind your yeah i've heard working for giant companies is awesome is what i know downside it turns out it's all it's all microphones all upsides yeah like you you you want a fedex a microphone and an audio interface and a pair of headphones anywhere in the world we got you you know i sometimes do i would love to sometimes sit in on like an npr production meeting because i am curious what they send people sometimes sometimes they do a little behind the scenes and it sounds like sometimes they have a producer there on location sometimes it sounds like they are just using some kind of uh bluetooth or something app on their phone or a microphone on their phone maybe they sent them ahead of time and sometimes it sounds like they're just using their phones uh and and some kind of app on their phone so we worked with a really great producer who had done npr stuff before i've done some npr uh call-ins before okay where you go to like the local npr station and they put you in a recording booths yeah in-house yeah like i'd go to kqed in san francisco right that somebody'd meet you at the door they'd be like oh yeah you're in recording room four we'll definitely take you up there and then they'd lock you in a small booth did they have their cool uh this is the thing i was always jealous of they're cool like i guess they're not isdn lines now they're special like uh like phone lines that like jump right into the main hub well it's point to point yeah so i think when i did it they were still isdn lines at least the first time um but but they were like you would you would sit there and then a light would flash green it was like hey when the green flat light flashes you hit the button it connects you and then somebody'd pop up in your ears and be like hey this is blah blah blah we're gonna go be live with it and it was like you called into some radio show right except for you as you were using the same microphones we're using now because they were like they were like electro voice i think is the thing that they standardize on yeah probably and um yeah and you were in a studio and i was in a little little little studio with super padded walls the whole thing yeah the other thing that he said that they would do when they were doing recordings and remotes that weren't live is he would just have them hold up the phone with the voice recorder turned on and just hold it up to their mouth like like like three inches from the side of their face like this and it's surprisingly effective if they had a modern phone like if they had a decent phone especially an iphone yeah then you could get a pretty clean audio source without a whole lot of mouth noises and stuff like that out of that thing it's still a little processed more processed than you like yeah but it wasn't bad so i believe it and especially nowadays i feel like once in a blue moon you get a little behind the scenes stuff like we're kind of dating ourselves because we're talking about npr but like someone's around who listen to npr you know radio folks here that we uh that's what all the kids are listening to i still have a radio i love i love I listen, look, the kids like NPR. Yes. My daughter's like, hey, can we stop listening to the old guy music and listen to the old guys talking? And I was like, yeah, we can totally do that. Yeah. KQED, right? Yeah, KQED. Yeah. So once in a while, they do like the pre-show stuff where you hear them and they sound like garbage. And then they're like, is it recording now? And then they switch over to sounding high quality. And you're like, oh, okay. they are definitely doing some kind of uh thing like a skype or something on the terminal on the computer and then they are using a phone or some other device maybe maybe they sent them a recorder i don't i don't know that's a fascinates me i i would i would like to sit in uh though because i have real guest tech fear stuff this is why i do multiple recordings here about having guests on podcasts and being like oh my gosh are they gonna forget to record or are they saying they're recording on their end and like they're not quite sure or you know i i'm a bad producer in the way that like i'm a little better at it now but like when people would record and their mics are like way out here and they have to be like hey do you mind just like pulling your mic in or like hey those earbuds are really bleeding do you have another set of or sorry your headphones are really bleeding but will there are i just talked about this recently forget where i think on like a next lender q a there are really really good vst plugins now for cleaning up uh audio yeah and they work very well and are they part of the ai takeover maybe some of them have a little uh let's call it machine learning okay let's uh yeah yeah it's fine it's okay yeah uh but they work really well actually the newest suite of um ones that i just upgraded to recently uh that i really like have um bleed it's magic bleed removal yes that's what they said uh i um i really like them i think they are very good uh i'm gonna have to get a recommendation because like it it's always a problem it's it's why honestly the the like this has gone from cold open to just talking about audio stuff now but um it's the reason we don't do very many guests to typically is because it's always a wild card and i'm always going to skew on the side of guests who i know have pretty decent recording setups because it's it's like fixing a dirty audio signal is such an enormous undertaking i think i use the isotope um suite that is not the big main one it's the slightly cheaper one because the the whole big huge thing is too expensive uh yes it's the isotope suite okay izotope izotope yes and they just updated to 12 recently and uh i use their suites of um cleanup tools they have mastering suites that are for recording music and stuff like that i don't use that yeah but you know it's not it's not free it's not super cheap but it's a couple hundred bucks and i i find them to work really well the only problem will yeah is when you use it you forget that it's going to take a lot longer to kick out this you know you get used to exporting your audio file and be like yeah this will be done like five minutes i'll just uh my workflow and then suddenly you're just like this is an hour and 15 minutes to export this uh audio now because it's processing yeah so just be careful it's not gpu accelerated i assume it's like just running the cpu like a peasant probably probably um so the thing is like uh i just updated it recently and i use it once in a while because it can clean up background noise they they have a lot of things in there that are like uh and they and they work they you think they wouldn't work i've been doing audio for a long time i'm like you can't do this that's impossible but they have and you're like oh okay that kind of works they have d uh reverb uh yeah which works for roomy people they have d clipping which kind of works to restore a little bit if somebody's peaking or clipping it's not perfect but it'll it'll i looked at how it's trying to work it kind of restores it a bit um they have uh debuzz and and d uh syllabus syllabus de-assing oh d d yeah d de-civilization yeah right that's that's the bad for access game that's yeah yeah welcome welcome to welcome to vinnie caravella's de-civilization no cybil dannings here um and so we uh you know we should i should do an audio podcast called cybil war cybil war cybil no no no don't do that you'll get the wrong that people will be confused by that one um anyway they they kind of work but they added something uh that i have a problem with in podcast which is um and this might have been in rx11 not just rs12 d click like a d a d you know like yeah yeah which i do all the time in my podcast i'm always like you know that like that mouth noises yeah yeah sorry for people who are it's gonna happen anyway i'm sorry i just do it all the time uh and i was a great this is awesome i'm just gonna use this and then it took the rendering time up from like five minutes to an hour and 15 minutes i was like great turning that i'm just stopping that and turning that off because usually i'm editing the podcast for our main podcast and it's like eight o'clock at night and i'm like i just gotta get this thing out uh and i was like i'm not waiting until 10 o'clock to get this podcast this is a tomorrow morning problem at that point this is a if i have the this is a luxury on this one so anyway um what's up welcome to brad will made a tech pod i'm will and our substitute brad this week brad's still out having uh doing doing family stuff uh is one next lander's own vinnie caravella welcome to show vinnie welcome back there there is no substitute for brad shoemaker no look i've tried it's impossible impossible he's he's inimicable it's there are certain things in inimicable he's not inimical inimical means he'd be an enemy inimitable means he's not able to be copied yeah there are certain things for which there are plenty of substitutes i i prefer uh i can i can take a veggie dog i like a veggie dog oh wow that's a bold choice yeah i don't mind it i don't mind it it's different it's i find it to be an okay swapping in veggie mayo doesn't work for me no i i i've gotten real into nutritional yeast lately oh what uh yeah the nooch is what the vegans call it oh but i put it on popcorn the trader joe's used to make this popcorn that was called um i can't remember it had it had trader joe's name but it was like popcorn and nutritional yeast and like a little bit of onion and garlic powder and it basically was like it was just the bomb it was the kind of thing that like i went there one day i was like oh this looks pretty good i'll try it and i was on the way home from the grocery store i was like maybe i'll dig into the groceries grab a little snack on the way home i opened up that bag of popcorn i ate like half the bag of popcorn on the way home i just housed it now i i look i get it i like bread so yeah so i'm a fan of yeast let's just get that out of the gate so my best friends are yeast yeah you know you know a lot of yeast we know i know this works for me um but nutritional yeast does sound like one of those products in the sci-fi books where it's like hey um you got your block of nutritional yeast yeah yeah we grow it in the vat downstairs that's right yes you just got your that and some algae uh that you are eating it tastes like cheese it tastes it tastes real cheesy is the is the kind of cheese i'm a big fan of cheese and yeast maybe maybe i'm a candidate yeah so anyway uh speaking of cheese we're here today because you and i had a conversation a couple weeks ago into a microphone someplace and i think one of us idly said vinny you should just come on the podcast and ask a bunch of questions the problem is every time you're on uh people don't realize this but pre-show is usually when i just ask you every monday well what's up with monitor scaling how come how come how come display scaling just breaks half my programs well let me tell you so i think eventually you're like you should just come on the show just write these down yeah so so this is this is the first the first uh the first outing of this vinny you put about 20 questions into a big giant google document and then i put check marks next to the ones that i'm prepared to answer and you're going to ask a bunch of questions we're and see how many we get through and and uh yeah now i disclaimer i certainly don't know the answer to these questions do you feel like you have a good handle on these or do you have to do like a look this isn't necessarily my my expertise here so i did a little bit of reading on some of these topics uh some of them i have pretty strong feelings for out of the gate some of them i'm gonna say hey when brad's back we're gonna do a whole episode about this oh fantastic okay great uh so should i just start asking a question just just let her rip man that's what we're here for and apologies to some of your audience if i uh if i get stuff wrong i know you uh you run in some pretty tech crowds here so people are very accepting of mistakes as long as as you know it's it's fine it's part of the process are they accepting of bad opinions look they like they we've never as a group said no to a hot take okay all right all right here's my first question okay uh this one comes in for viddy yeah we know they're all for viddy um should i use paid search you know it's funny you ask this because about two months ago somebody somebody sent a letter into the show and was like hey can you talk about paid search i'm kind of curious and google really sucks now yeah and the answer so i switched i signed up for coggy which is one of that is the one right that is the paid search seems like the one people like it has all the same stuff that google has and duck duck go and and bing open start page or what's with some of the other ones uh those are the main ones i haven't used any of the others at this point but um so it does have ai stuff which is i think one of the main reasons people kind of want to get away from google is because the ai overviews are simultaneously not super reliable and also are killing independent websites because they're sucking all the traffic away like in the old days you type something into google you'd get some results you'd click a link you'd go to that page and then like if they were giving you laptop buying advice you'd click on an affiliate link to the buy the laptop that you decide you're going to get and they'd get a little cheddar you'd get a laptop everybody wins we get a little ad sense money too along the way yeah now google is just not they're just giving the link straight to the thing and like and kind of badly summarizing the reviews this isn't the reason to stop using this though just to be clear not the reason to stop using google the google stuff the it's the reason to stop using the google ai summaries is because they're fucking terrible about 40 of the time they're uh yeah and also it's like um the the other thing that so my wife is is doing uh uh is it kagi or kaji i i it's been saying kagi i think okay she she this is what brought this up to me she started using it as well she got tired of the ai stuff but also she was like i have to scroll so far to get the non-sponsored results yeah and she was like i'm just i'm tired of that well so you can you do the udm thing on google which basically reverts your google results to like a 2015 era no sponsored results at the top no no ai summary no no knowledge graph that stuff still works okay um it's the problem is the google results are actually worse now it seems like so i did that for a long time and that was that was my solution to this the difference in the coggy search and the google search is as good as everybody says it is when i when when like it's it's one of those things that like you know how when remember remember when dave got his first zojerushi thermal mug and he's like wow this thing is really good and then all of a sudden another person bought a thermal mug i think it was you and you were like wow this thing is really good and then like three days later everybody has the thermal mug yeah yeah yeah it's the same thing it's like it's it's legit awesome it's it's like going back in time to when search was useful and good um whether you should pay for it or not really is depends on how much search you use okay so like i just because of the work that i do i spend a lot of time searching for stuff yeah and it turns out that the 10 bucks a month or whatever it is is a real easy spend when you're doing 600 queries a month or 800 queries a month or something like that because it's something like five bucks for two i forget how many queries you get charged right at a cap at some point right like so yeah queries yeah the 10 what what is what it was was that the 10 tier it's unlimited at the five dollar tier it's limited to several hundred i i don't remember the actual number off the top of my head yeah but um but like it's free for 300 or the first 300 maybe so you can try it yeah there's there's no downside to trying it the pain in the butt is getting it set up on all your devices so like okay i mainly use it on my desktop and my phone i don't have it on my tablet or my laptop or any of that stuff yet just because i it hasn't it hasn't been an issue yet so so when i looked at it here here are the things that um why i wanted to ask you about it and i'm glad you've used it because um that you're i think you're pushing me into switching over at least trying it um one thing i heard all right i'm just gonna run down what here's what i heard here's here's what i've heard on the street yeah let's let me let me know what uncle google told you yeah right yeah i know you know a guy who works at google i know uh first uh i think probably the thing that maybe some of your audience has heard because they might be in the know is that um this came up and there i know there is no company that's going to be uh fully uh you can proudly go out and be like i'm using this company without something i guess that one of their indexes is um was it yandex the the russian one uh that they they pull in and they they said that it's a very small part of their indexing but they do incorporate some of that and some people are pretty unhappy about that that money might go to a russian owned um again i don't know all the details uh index because they they build their own indexes from other indexes yeah they're they're like it's um it's a little bit meta crawlery in the if you're from the 90s in that they search multiple indexes yes duck duck go works the same way duck duck go is primarily bing plus some other stuff oh their search is just as much as i want them to be good their search results are just never that good it's only as good as bing is oh i got bad news for you about bing man uh so so there is that part where some people are like i really wish they didn't uh but what i also saw again was that kaji kagi was like hey we would love to have our own index we just aren't there yet right like we we would be like to be a top player and if we they said i think if they remove it then um their search results would be poor again i'm not well versed enough to know uh how true that is the problem with the search is that it's such a big problem it requires so much infrastructure to fix um that i don't know that anybody's going to do this from a standing start without integrating some other products right yeah yes and like a lot of stuff on the internet i think it is i think trying this is my personal take again i'm not well versed in it but my feeling is look you're probably going to have to choose your poison here right like nothing's going to be perfect that's it um so the the poison in the kagi sense that that yandex thing is bad i'm not as worried about that at some point when they scale up they'll move beyond that and start doing their own image searches i'm sure or somebody else will offer an image search that is better yeah like this is a no ethical consumption under capitalism situation it sometimes feels like it right yeah right because like if you look at the damage google's done over the years it's probably broader and shallower but the scale is much larger so you know look i don't even know broader and shallower like i think it's just i think it's much much broader i don't know about shallow um again it probably goes to what your personal feelings are about what's happening yeah so the other things it does is they do have an ai search like you can turn that stuff off but it's off by default now i i again this is when i was looking it up it seemed like it was pushed forward initially and then since they are or this is what I Uncle Google told me, Uncle Reddit told me, was that since enough people complain they kind of push it off to maybe an opt-in or it doesn't surface immediately if you subscribe. I have not subscribed so I don't know if that's actually true but I don't remember what the defaults are but I do, I definitely didn't, I don't see it on the day-to-day I was able to like In the same way that Firefox now has a, yo, don't bother me about AI features anymore. It's a similar situation. So, like, I think the thing that was appealing to me was, look, and this is what was appealing to my wife, is I would like to pay you for the service. I don't want to be the product. And if I'm unhappy, you will lose money. And if enough people are unhappy, then you can't sustain your business, right? That's the exchange. That's a big part of it, right? Like not being the, you being the customer, not the product is a big goal of paying for services like this. It's why I pay for FastMail instead of using Gmail anymore is because if FastMail screws up and they mess my, they're not doing the work that I want, then I don't, you know, they don't get my money anymore and everything works out. So I would definitely say try the free 300 search trial, set it up on your main computer, the one where you do the most searching, and then see if it's worth going through the hassle of, of uh of jumping in i like i will say it's just a weird thing right like it's it's just yeah it's like a weird like i i'm i'm so sorry i didn't mean to cut you off there no you're good uh it's just such a i'm so tired of paying for services and but then i guess i have to pick and choose how i want to engage or or like i'm at the crossroads now for what kind of internet do i want you know yeah that that's what i think where i'm at and and the the big important takeaway for me after using this for a couple months now is that the search results themselves are better like i'm getting instead of having to dig through three pages of results to find the thing i want with all the spam blogs and all that they're doing a much better job of filtering out the garbage than google is right now yeah i guess um brave search has this and again i haven used them all but there there a way to there that mouth noise there a way to filter I think they call it lenses or something I don know what it called in Kagi to more results like this right Oh, it's like cohort analysis. Yeah. So they can, they can say, okay, if you search for a term that's ambiguous, like, um, like goat, okay. It'll get, it'll say, okay, do you want Serena Williams, the greatest of all time? Or do you want literal goats? Yeah. And then you click the picture and then it, so actually that hasn't come up for me because I don't, I'm pretty good about generating queries that don't result in that kind of ambiguous, ambiguous response. but yeah like i'm looking at i typed in goat and i have the definition of goat on wikipedia i've got goat.com which is sneakers apparel and accessories and then i've got like memes and yeah of course so can you click on the wikipedia one is there something the thing i was reading was there's a way to go to like the wikipedia one and maybe be like hey give me more this is kind of the stuff i want or to block things that are like um sites that aren't of relevance yeah so you can definitely do the more results from this site remove results from this site so if you get like spam stuff then you can pull that out um and it also lets you deep link into the internet archive so you can pull an old version of the thing which is like is a google feature google used to have visible and i know i know what i look we i'm sure you guys have talked about in certification up and down up and down up and down but man it's another reason why i i'm like i think i'm ready to get off i feel like quoted searches is that just gone can you not just like uh i'm sure that there's a way to access it if you know how to build the right command line the right url but it's not in the main ui anymore no yes anyway okay i think you've convinced me i think i'm gonna try the trial for it yeah try it you got nothing to lose um you got another question you feeling good i've got so many questions i thought we're gonna get through at least 10 of these i'm if we get through four i think we're gonna be doing good all right here's here's my I'm just going to go down the list. Yeah, hit it. I've got a NAS. I'm nasty with the NAS. Yeah. My network area storage. I have had mine for a long time, which probably means I have too many spinning rust drives of low terabyte or low values, terabyte values. And when they go and I upgrade them, I usually put a higher terabyte value in. and then you know the in then then in the pool we'll eventually get up to a higher terabyte so i've got i don't know let's say 24 drives plus right that's a lot of drives any and you know look well look um okay look it's a lot of drives um and what happens now so i did buy spares when they're cheap i tried to buy spares when they would go on sale uh over the last 10 years i'd be like okay like there's a sale something's happening there's a sale here i'll just pick up a spare so i've got a couple of spares but i feel like there's a ticking clock now on my nas and something's gonna go and we're in the worst time what do we do when all of our drives start failing uh in the next five years and it costs four thousand dollars to replace a drive yep that So that is, uh, that's the eternal struggle for the, for the NAS people right now. Um, I'm looking at a list of discs.com, which is my new shuck stop alternative. Okay. The shuck stop guy shut down. Finally, he was like, I'm not going to, not, not going to, this isn't going to be a thing that I continue working on, which is a bummer, but like, I get it. Um, they do price per terabyte. Is there, is there a dollar per terabyte? and right now the top pick is 23 dollars per terabyte when it was like two dollars a terabyte this time like six dollars a terabyte or something this time last year wait 23 dollars per terabyte yep so a 24 terabyte drive costs 554 dollars for a western digital gold 24 terabyte right now okay i mean that's a lot of terabytes but that's a lot of money it is but the problem is you need multiples of the same drive so you're looking at like 1500 bucks per redundancy on a 48 i mean it's look it's a 48 terabyte server which is a lot that's a lot i mean right i was going i was going for um anything over let's say everything anything over eight terabytes i would usually go for um uh used refurb uh drives from um you look your eyes just went wow mr i have three backups you're buying refurb drives for your nas i was certified refurbs from uh was server part deals or uh um wow yeah no they were they were like because back at like hard drives.com back of a van hard drives.com i know a guy.com the hard drive super store they are um you know they would be pretty low uh usage because data centers would just be like hey you know this is too low or something like that and you're notoriously light usage data centers they hardly even touch them they just breathe on them for a little bit uh but no they'd be pretty decent but the thing for me was they would be decent enough where the price to value or longevity would be okay 24 terabytes is getting up there you're you're like that's what that's probably near bleeding edge for uh um for a uh not not for a spinning disc 20 24 terabytes is is the the biggest of the ones that i think people recommend right now i think seagate has a 28 gigabyte drive now that's new enough that people terabyte not gigabyte terabyte did i say gigabyte yeah terabyte um but but yeah so i'm looking at these net so here's the thing these are actual nas drives where i'm looking at this list the the reason i like shuck stop is because that guy was like yo here's the ones you can go buy at best buy and you pop out of the case and you can get a 24 gigabyte drive for like two-thirds of the price yes um it's it's a bad the tldr is yeah pray to god that your hard drives don't conk out in the next like two years literally knocking on wood right now yeah usually i try to replace them every five years because i start getting suspect about always on drives after about five years even if they're not super heavy usage we're gonna go a little longer this go around i uh i have a thing that i started about seven eight years ago where um i forget how old my nas is it's getting up there my my my main nas uh is is pretty old at this point but um i started a while ago i just did a thing in my you need a budget my ynav which is just mass cost and i just put i just put money in there every month that's just like hey so i have a i have a envelope or pool of money that is just crewing every month that is just like you're gonna need it i know it's coming this happened after like the second time i had to just go in and be like yeah oh my god wait right this is going to be an ongoing cost for the rest of eternity replacing drives which i think is a thing that some people who are like i should build the nas don't necessarily realize is like it's not one and done you you need to feed that monster it is an ongoing the drives are an ongoing cost i i'm gonna go and tell you it has changed my feelings um so i have a whole giant dvd collection that i ripped and i did them as isos years ago the dvds I first did them as H.264s, then I redid them all as ISOs a few years after. And I was looking at some of the old H.264 versions and looking at the ISO versions. There's no difference in quality. I can't see the difference in quality. It's good H.264 on top of MPEG-2 compression. Like, the MPEG-2 compression is messy and garbage. And making those videos smaller with H.264 at a decent bit rate, no impact, as far as I can tell. Look, my eyes are old. I wear thick glasses, Vinny. are you like the kids are watching youtube at 320 by 200 these days are you sure you're not like transcoding those when you're when you're watching them and it's just pushing everything down to a meg and a half uh on the on the client end no it actually goes the other way it's really stupid so i was watching some old beavis and butt look i did a thing you know you can't get beavis and butthead with the music videos you can't buy that right yeah so i i went out illegal it's possible i sailed the high seas and found some old vhs rips of people's recordings with like the ads and stuff still in them uh-huh fantastic it's like you get all the good late night ads from that hey do you want to meet hot girls in your area sure those numbers still work yeah yeah those numbers are still good there's been one guy logged in just for the last 10 years just just just so that the service can't go down we can't turn it off that guy's still on oh hey will hey how's it going man how's it going um but but so those it scales up to 1080p it transcodes them up to 1080p oh wow because the video encoder doesn't know what to do with like 320 by 240 video or whatever it is some wattage there yeah we're really cooking the cooking the bits there i i think um i think was mkv is what people like matryska matryska is the container people like because it holds everything you can put like like where mp4 has real limitations on like numbers of subtitles and different audio tracks and stuff you can do mkv is just like yo man we take whatever you got you got you know real loosey-goosey yeah they don't they don't man matryska don't care yeah exactly yeah so um my worry is uh uh so basically you're saying we're doomed and i guess my follow-up question was is uh is is ss are ssd nasas um are they are they for the uber rich what what is uh when somebody tells me they have an ssd nas i don't i just don't believe them i just so well if you think about scale of data so if they're not if they're not if they don't have a media collection uh-huh you know i have these thousands i used to buy a bunch of blu-rays and dvds which was a mistake and uh the that that collection storing that collection digitally takes a boatload of space it's like 15 20 gigs right um a terabytes rather than 15 20 gigs no problem put that in my pocket uh 15 or 20 terabytes per per item no no no no for the whole collection for the thousands of discs of audio a video no no video dvds 20 terabytes of your that's that's not bad i mean look for a long time at maximum pc for some reason i was on like the movie studios mailing list so i would get every blu-ray release that came out i'm just saying your video collection must look like garbage 50 to 20 terabytes for a thousand movies will is over there and crunching these things down to push this wow i didn't expect to be attacked today sir um no they're they're running i mean they look typically they look better than like your netflix or amazon stream okay they do not look as good as the raw blu-ray but like i'm and also a lot of dvds and not 4k blu-rays and uh you know yeah dvds start out at eight gigs right so and when you crunch them down to movies like two gig and a half i think it depends on how you're going you know like uh yeah some movies now like the some bigger blu-rays they can they can be 20 20 gigs if uh 50 gigs yeah yeah right if you're uh if you're really layer if you're a sicko if you're putting that thing so okay 15 20 i'm not here to shame your compression it seems like like i did a lot of testing on this back in the day this was a this was a recurring segment on on tested.com the place for your mp4 compression of blu-rays you're putting everybody else's like 80 terabyte servers uh to shame here with uh um your your compression ratios well so so what i okay so compression is important uh-huh i i have started deleting stuff that's never going to get watched again because i still have the discs in like a big binder in the in case files in the garage like um like flat flat like hanging files full of discs i got rid of all the jewel cases years ago right but the but the discs are still around so if i want to watch the actual movie i can go dig it out of the archive or re-encode it yeah or re-encode it or there's other ways to find things everything's available it turns out these days if you know where to look um so the nas the the ssd nas people are not doing media collections so if you want a place to store to have like files that are accessible from all your computers yeah if you want to have a place to keep like back up your cloud photo backups right because it's nice to have a spare copy of that stuff just in case google messes up google photos somehow um stuff like that then like a three two terabyte ssds which would have been five hundred dollars a year ago yeah is is a is a reasonable place to do that and like b-link and synology and all those companies like it's it's funny because the companies that make those little like i don't know their knucks is what i was saying as like the little little square mini pcs yeah like they got into this game last year and started making mini pcs with like six ssd slots uh nvme slots um and so the mini pc people and the nas people are kind of like meeting each other and duking it out in that in that kind of new category low power nas they're low yeah yeah so they'll put like a four core celeron or a you know a decent low range low mid-range apu from amd or something in there and then uh a bunch of nvme slots and probably a 2.5 gigabit uh ethernet port so or two okay so okay this is this is again this is outside my depth but maybe you um maybe you know so with i i run true nas um and so with the way that it writes i initially i feel like again this is some memory from a while ago ssds were not the right solution because of the way it writes continuously or something about the zfs stuff yeah and stuff and ss it can do it can over wear ssds i have to assume that's a fixed problem at this point i don't know for sure are you on linux true nas are you on bsd true nas still bsd i think i don't think i ever switched over and you're running zfs i assume not yeah yeah so that that i'd have to do research to know the answer on that one i i actually i don't know that like i just switched over i think the true nas from free nas i think i just updated not that long ago like a couple years ago i think the um okay should i put a cache drive in an ssd cache i used to do a cache drive but that was mainly because i had a bunch of small like 120 like early days of ssd 128 gigabyte ssd stuff like that um it seemed to improve writing performance quite a bit if i recall okay when i was writing large files yeah it didn't have a whole lot of an impact on read performance that makes sense to me though that makes sense because it's basically maybe i'm way off is it just like a buffer when you're writing you write to the cache and then that'll that'll spill out to the hard drive later i think it let you write to the cache and one hard drive rather than to two hard drives at the same time which was a little bit problematic at least on the like i was running that on a broadwell e which in retrospect was really funny because that machine probably cost me 50 bucks a month to run just on idle power yeah um but but yeah the uh the the cat i think it's if you have a like i wouldn't go spend 300 on a 120 gigabyte gigabyte ssd today yeah but if you have one laying around you're not using plug it in yeah okay maybe i'll try that i know there's some or again i don't know but i had heard there were some some issues if you're really concerned about maybe cache uh drives if power goes out while you're in the cache that can happen yeah okay and then it's like if you're not plugged into a ups especially on the way zfs testworks and pre-nass i i distinctly remember them saying hey don't do this unless you have this on power back and and and can do a gentle shutdown when the power goes out too like that's the other part of it is you you don't like run the battery you want that to happen automatically not you have to run into the garage and hit the button on it as fast as you can my nuts are my nuts are all you see i don't have a nut server but i'm i'm also i like to live dangerously as we've established that's right your nuts are just hanging out there all right should we go to another question we can't spend too long we could probably do a whole show on one of these questions i think i think several of these could have been i think we're gonna do a paid search show for what it's worth okay because i want to talk to brad about it too uh the other one that we're not going to do i'll just say that you were like this is a whole show at some point is like uh browsers the browser wars because yeah i was i'm along with getting off of maybe google search was like i it's chrome there's got to be and then i looked i was like oh my gosh browser wars are hot right now uh yep they're desperately fighting over a tenth of a percent of the worldwide browser market yeah all right um this one actually is one that my wife asked me about and i'm like do you what do you want to go down this road i do you want to go down the shirt do you know what you're talking about and it is the smart breaker panels because she's like yeah because she's like hey um our electricity bill was like super high like what's going on i'm like you know i'm not really sure exactly what's going on i'm not what i'm not like is it's definitely my nas yeah yeah it's i got a new video card for the computer it's why my it's why my office is so hot all the time it's absolutely the server i'm like i don't know if there is a way to find that we could i can install a smart breaker panel which could tell us you know who's who's chewing up what kind of energy in the house what do you think about those that's an expensive option right it is not cheap yeah you have to like basically shut down your electrical service for a period of time pay an electrician to come in and rip out the thing that's been hung off the side of your house no you gotta pay don't do that one yourself that's not so bad that's a no replacing your electrical service for the whole house well what's so it's what's so because it's like it's like one breaker times 48 but but you gotta turn it off on the wall from the outside oh i can turn off i can i can cut the look i'm not saying i would do this what i'm saying is i have thought about doing this so um i can cut the power off the the mains come in from the outside right yeah uh they hit a box out there yeah i could turn that off before it gets to my breaker panel but your breaker panel inside the house right i forgot i live in california where we do stupid stuff like put your breaker panel outside no no so my breaker panel's inside but i have a where the mains hit the house also has a breaker there so i can i would be working with dead wire ideally inside at the breaker panel i'm going to tell you this is a hundred percent not a vinnie project what you should not do this wait but what okay but explain if you mess this up you're going to burn your house down like and it won't be like a slow burn the house down like over an indeterminate period time in the future it will go immediately like you will you will burn everything down in like five minutes i've done sub panels and you know congratulations they're smaller but uh it's not the mains i don't no no no no no no but this is uh like i just does the panel get 240 volts in 120 volts on a big giant thick wire each leg each leg will get 120 yeah don't do that and then you know they're you know i understand the the in concept what's happening i support each breaker back in one at a time i've seen you make xlr cables before i look so here's the thing like i fully support anybody who wants to do some freelance plumbing like if you want to learn how to do plumbing yeah shit runs downhill and paydays friday it's pretty straightforward i see plumbing scares me electrical stuff doesn't scare me as much as plumbing scares me well well plumbing plumbing won't kill you if you do it bad but electrical probably won't kill you if you do it bad water damage is real but it'll kill your wallet yeah water damage hurts water damage is a slow yeah that's just you wish you were dead actually it's a quick one and you're just you're just kind of done i hear i hear what you're saying and it is and it is and i i take it to heart so So I think that there are better, more reasonable solutions that don't involve replacing your electrical service. Better. Less comprehensive, though. Less comprehensive. Yeah. You can buy for 25 bucks a plug that you put in the wall between things that you think might be expensive and not. Well, you can buy the kilowatt. You can also buy ones that are directly connected to your home assistant setup. Oh, okay. Because I think you're a home assistant person. Yeah. I'm not. I'm not. oh i have home assistant for one thing for the i think for the nut servers sweet jesus i know um well so you can you can connect to those those uh power monitoring switches i use these i think they're tp link ones uh that basically can give me a live reading of how much power the devices that are plugged into it are using okay it also makes it a switch so you can turn it on and off on a schedule um and you you can like i get a report i have a report on my home assistant page that tells me that yesterday july uh 16th 15th i used 1.568 kilowatts of electricity for the tower on my computer working all day so okay so i've a dollar worth of electricity i have gone down this road right i have i have a couple of kilowatts hooked up i have one to my server i can see right now i'm using 600 watts in this office between the the problem i have is stuff like the ac that doesn't get plugged into that runs right to the breaker yeah those are the things i really want to monitor um that i really want to see how much we're using um per month or something like that i know there are things you can clip on uh almost like ammeters that you can clip on um but i think the smart panel i think the smart panel is a great solution it's really expensive it is really expensive you should not freelance that you should pay someone to do that what if i what if i watch a bunch of youtube videos that's the same thing isn't it that's i'm not coming to your house now i'm just going to be clear you know i have paid people i have paid electricians and uh bless them i've had some very good electricians i have some i say i'm going to say i'm 50 50 on electricians where i have had to go back and redo their work because they they have done poor work for licensed electricians and i'll be like dude you can't bond the the ground here should not be bonded it's already bonded somewhere else or or like hey this sub panel here should not or like you wired this wrong i'm telling you 50 50 shot vinnie do you know what is bonded is is the liability when they burn your house down you'll get a giant check they're gone if you are responsible for burning your house down you know who's going to get a giant check no one no because the homeowners and now there's a public record of us talking about this so you know there is yeah we messed this up i could get a uh i would look what i would do and i if if it was required by the town i would get a permit and have somebody inspect it how about that does that make you feel better a little but not much okay i know a lot of house inspectors it's not the city inspectors they're they're they're not looking for the kind of crimes you're going to do inside those walls i had an electrician come because i much like you're recommending here and i'm only half joking about this but much like you're recommending some things is like or some things are like hey it's not worth it right like you should just have somebody do so when i was redoing my attic i had everything in my hand wire i had an auger you know drill bit and i was like i'm right and then at some point i was like the thing that actually stopped me was i don't feel like putting giant holes through structural um uh parts of the house to run the cable in the attic if it's wrong then it's going to be swiss cheese if you know there are certain things like hey oops this needed to be six inches in not seven stuff like that and i was like i'm not comfortable paid somebody to do it uh this i'll try to keep this story quick and then um when i was finishing up the attic i was doing uh the walls and everything else up there every time i'd plug in like my shop vac it would trip the circuit i'm like oh it must just be the shop vac pulls too many amps uh up there right like okay this maybe it's not rated something so i'd plug it in downstairs by the time i was all done when i would plug in my cell phone it would trip the circuit to charge and i was like what the heck called an electrician another that this other guy had gone the guy i hired he was gone uh called another electrician look at he's like oh you know these new breakers are sensitive they can be sensitive to um they were arc fault breakers they can be sensitive to um uh you maybe as a homeowner you can put in just regular old breakers that might fix it this was like the third electrician that had come in anyway my wife is out i was like hey can you just pick up like a 15 amp breaker uh while you out there i just gonna try swapping this out while she was out i went upstairs i opened uh one of the outlets the guy had tied the uh um uh the mains wrong to to they were shorting to like the wrong posts on the thing he basically he had to make a connection uh and he had tied the neutral to like the the mains uh uh somewhere uh it wasn't to the means it was actually to the ground but he had tied it incorrectly yeah so that every time the it would trip every time you plug something in yeah that's what it's supposed to do that's working as intended no no no i mean when you wired up wrong the breaker's supposed to trip yeah yeah yeah yeah that worked yeah uh and so i basically just unscrewed it and did it the right way and it totally worked and this was a paid electrician that had come by my house so i would have probably asked that guy for money back i think at that point we were just like uh just never come back to the house our long national nightmare is over but yeah so okay so one bad seed can spoil one bad egg one bad apple berry i don't know what the metaphor is here but like the whole bunch can go bad if one but you got a bad banana in there and it sounds like you got a bad banana but like yeah let's look this is like a classic you know the rogue legacy preview don't shit your pants you remember that game yes yes i had no idea that that was the rogue legacy team the next thing they went on to do was rogue legacy so wait what do you are you saying which part am i am i in the world you're sitting the pants your game is don't burn your house down okay and and the answer is licensed and bonded electrician thousands of dollars to do you know how much work that is i have so many breakers 25 and just plug that thing in and you know what don't worry about the air conditioning because here's the thing yeah we as a society as a call as a species yeah treat air conditioning like a luxury when in the times that we live in it is increasingly not that it's also much much cheaper if do you have a heat pump i also have heat pumps yeah so if you're using a heat pump it's cheaper to cool your house than it is to heat your house because you're going down a few degrees rather than up a lot of degrees right going down a few degrees right oh oh you're you're taking is this like an energy thing you're this is an energy thing yeah putting the heat in okay yeah it's it's the like moving the heat from one side to the other is the same cost no matter which way it's going but more costs more and less costs less right so so yeah we have central air for our existing system central air for like the first and second floor and then we have heat pumps i have one in the garage here and then i put some in the basement when we redid the basement big fan big fan heat pumps great so yeah don't worry about them electricity's uh if if you're worried about that then you should you know put some solar panels on the roof and buy some batteries so okay this i have another question here i uh okay i'm aware okay i'm aware you have questions okay i have another question here so we we are when we moved into the house we had to uh put a new roof on and have a bunch of work done to the house so our roof is not that old and we always said when we have to do the roof again we will investigate solar panels right like when it's time for the roof um by and you know a lot of reasons one uh solar panels can be very very expensive two uh we were hoping that by the time that happens efficiency of solar panels would have changed which i think which i still believe is happening absolutely has happened yes yeah uh and uh three um maybe you know some other we would like a whole house uh battery with our solar system not just feeding back into the grid and battery technology also changes right the very quickly capacity and efficiency so um so solar panels but we did join a solar co-op do you know oh so that means you're buying electricity from a solar provider we are so we were doing that initially with our power plan uh which was like hey you can opt in to get energy from what they would call a green service right like a solar provider somewhere else this but in our neighborhood uh we um they started a solar farm not in our neighborhood but in a nearby town and we are like in a co-op like a solar co-op we put we're like participating in this thing it generates electricity and we get a share of the electricity that it generates which um then i think gets taken off i think the electricity the electricity company buys that share and we got the money for it so it did take like a hundred bucks or so off of our uh bill that seems pretty good yeah it was pretty good now our bill is like as everybody's electricity bill is probably bananas uh but uh yeah it was kind of cool i thought it was maybe a scam at first i'm not but it seems like did a kid come to your door and was like hey man my name's lance i i want to i want to talk to you about your your electrons yeah also you have ants i could get rid of them look i noticed i noticed you got extra kids in there we can do something about that anyway i got a pg i got a guy trying the pg and e slammers we get those here where somebody comes to your door and they basically sign you up for an opt-in super expensive electrical provider oh because you know we're deregulated anything goes so like it's just door-to-door scamming out here in california so that's i'm i'm always very my scam radar is probably overactive which is probably not a terrible thing that's a bad that's a good thing yeah yeah so i don't know if anybody in your community knows uh we we just joined it recently where this is our first summer on it so far knock on wood has been pretty cool i i have liked it i i think it could be a great thing for people who are in apartments or can't put solar on their house if we are able to build solar farms somewhere and then communities can get in on it right like uh you know it's i'm not getting the electricity it generates but they are selling it back for me well so san mateo county where i live years and years ago switched everybody over to like we had a referendum or something and and we voted to to buy from a green power provider so we buy wind and wind and solar and i assume that they have batteries in that mix now uh that store stuff generated during the day and all all theoretically all of the power in san mateo county is clean but then you get then they probably uh your local provider just is like well then we're gonna pay we're gonna charge you up the wazoo for transmission line let me tell you about the transmission costs yeah so expensive so we've gone from yeah we're paying at peak uh we we we plan we we let's see we we pay based on demand and time so like it's most expensive between 3 p.m and 10 p.m uh it's least expensive between midnight and 3 3 p.m um and as a result you do things like set your electric car to only charge from midnight to three and and stuff like that um but we're paying 78 cents per kilowatt hour at peak okay that's 3 p.m to 10 p.m time that's including transmission that's transition transmission and generation okay and it's basically like a third uh or probably probably two-fifths uh generation and three-fifths transmission because PG&E keeps fucking up at a high level yeah um so anyway uh the answer to your question is yeah solar seems pretty good right now yeah um it's funny I was walking the dog yesterday and I talked to one of my neighbors who's an older guy who I you know we chat you know he's a he's a nice guy he's a he's a marine veteran who's 85 years old and lives down the street and this sweet old guy but a few years ago he was like i'm tired of paying pg and e i'm gonna get off the grid and he did the thing where he puts the panels on he has two big batteries hanging off the side of his house oh really and he's like yeah i i i get five dollars a month back from them on winter months okay and they pay me like 50 bucks a month on in the summertime so he's not only battery he is feeding back into the grid as well yeah so in california at least and this is the thing that varies based on municipality you can't disconnect from the grid entirely often they don't they don't let you um but yeah so he said he's net positive like 10 months of the year basically and two that he's not in the in the rainy season in the winter yeah you know it's one of those things uh i feel like it's it's so a climate dependent but b um situational dependent latitude dependent too yeah a latitude but situational like is your house was your house built facing the right way right like with the room do you have a surface area on the roof right like uh you know so many of those things that i feel like if this community solar stuff can offset some of that it's a great other option for folks that have poor solar compatibility well so so the other the other thing so the two of the things at least at the latitudes i operate out and it may be different because you're a little further north than me actually no you're a little further south because i'm even with boston i think san francisco is even with boston if i recall i'd have um yes but but the point is the new the current gen solar panels are efficient enough that like it's not like the old rules where you want a south facing surface to put them on you can put them like south facing is definitely better but kind of anything works um is is my understanding and you'd lose a little bit of efficiency but but like they're you're still going to do pretty well surface area can go goes a long way i told my wife i would be willing to i don't care i would put like a buttress around the entire roof that is just a second roof that on top of our roof like i don't care how it looks like you're building a valheim roof up there on the top it's like it's like hey man it's extra attic okay it's just just a weird space that's over our other roof like i like if i could uh if i could get to like net zero would be awesome you know like i would feel very happy i i was like i think that's i think that's totally attainable like our roof is our roof was on the house when we got here and it was probably five years old at the time so it's coming up on 25 years and we are i have literally been saying i think probably since i've known you that we have to do a new roof and when we do a new roof we're going to do this and every time i have somebody come out and look at the roof they're like yeah no you absolutely shouldn't take this roof off this is still super sound roofs are expensive well they're expensive and also the opportunity to mess them up like it's it's a it's it's very much from like when the roofer comes out i was like yeah no i wouldn't replace this one yet like that he's like it's a if it's not broke don't fix it situation because like are you gonna tell me i shouldn't do my own roof as well i absolutely think you should do your own roof i want to like you should live stream that make that an event like just get set up some cameras we can get jimmy fallon out there like it's gonna be a big deal yeah um i've done have you never i did i did roofs in high school briefly mostly 10 on boats and it was real bad oh i did um what my growing up we uh i don't know if you guys call them this but like a dog house on a roof the little like pop-up thing uh on some roofs and like on attic spaces it's like the little we call it a dormer no it's much smaller than that it's just like a little um we always call it a dog house it's just like a little part of the roof that just looks it looks like a little doghouse but like when you're in the attic space it's like a little bump out uh okay that's a dormer isn't it so a dormer i always imagine is like a like a second floor like on a thing this is very small it could be a dormer i think that's called a dormer vinnie okay and i always uh i always um a dormer in my mind was always like a bigger living space uh for uh like where one would might dorm this this is like a tiny little tiny little thing okay yeah yeah uh well i also don't know maybe a mother-in-law thing is another thing a term that got thrown around i wouldn't put my mother-in-law in the attic but that's up to you man i'm not gonna judge so on our house we had a single floor ranch growing up and we had this little bump out on the roof and it would leak um uh in the attic and so i i went on the roof with my dad and my brothers uh to take that thing off that was the most roofing we did i hate heights i do not like heights at all um and so that was not a great situation you have a house too as if i recall well now i do now we have now we have a two-story and an attic uh finished attic but growing up it was a one-story house uh ranch and but even that uh i did not like so i would yeah i freak out i've wanted to put an antenna on on my roof for a long time and i won't do it i just um don't want to go up that ladder yeah but but meanwhile you're in the other room being like yeah let's rip out these big three inch thick electrical cables dude that's i'm telling you it's like i love it um the the you but yeah you should definitely like i wouldn't wait on the roof at this point like if your roof is good and it's been sound you should just put the panels up the the guy down the street had his i was talking to because he was having his roof redone i wanted to see how he liked the guys he was using because this is what we do as functioning adults and he was like oh he's fantastic he's been really good and i was like what did you do about your panels? And he said, oh, the solar people came out two days before, took them all off, piled up into the backyard, and then they'll come back the day after it's done and put them back on. And it was, and I pay him like 150 bucks to do that. He said it wasn't expected. Yeah. Cause they're, they're not, they're on mounts, but they're not permanent. Like they're not like screwed into the roof necessarily. They're screwed into mounts. So you can take the panels off and then the roofers work around the mounts is my, that's what he said. Yeah. They could, they can, I guess it really depends on the type of roof you have as well. it probably also depends on the type of roof but these are like normal normal shingle roofs like asphalt shingles or asphalt shingle we're it's california so it's a relatively narrow pitch compared to what you guys would have out there probably because of snow yeah but um but yeah so that's wild i thought they'd have to take the mounts off i don't know i don't it didn't look like it it looked like they were poking through still so i bet the guys working on the roof hate that you know i would say they're probably pretty used to it by now i um yeah i would love to get solar stuff i'm still waiting i'm ticking waiting to see battery again and solar technology efficiency i know it's gotten better and cheaper also look i'm just saying i don't know i don't want to get too into it but let's just say i would love to get a solar um subsidy back yeah some kind of federal subsidy back for solar right so yeah that 7 500 bucks or whatever it was it used to get because it looks pretty good right now um i don't know to me we've reached the point almost especially with the electric car where knocking the 500 that i pay pg and e for electricity every month off feels really nice um would be yeah would be but like what do you imagine a solar installation for your house would cost to buy not to lease not to like you think in my mind it's always like 40 to 80 000 oh no it's i mean that's that includes the roof easy includes yeah so i have a thousand square foot house so it's a little you know the the coverage area is small yeah when i priced it out even two three years ago it was like 12 grand with the batteries and the panels but not including like a doing the doing the roof again or that was well the big cost for me is i have to replace my electrical service because i don't have um my my breaker boxes one of the it's 40 years old and it was shitty when they bought it okay um so like i have to replace that and then wire the batteries and all that stuff into that call me up let's go and i'm gonna pay a sort of i'm gonna pay a licensed and bonded electrician to do that work because i don't i love life and don't want to burn my house down um i've got you covered i mean although i guess i could probably for for fly you out for next nothing it last time i got a quote on replacing electrical service is going to be like 10 grand um which is also why i charge my car on 120 volts instead of 240s because i don't have enough breaker space for a 240 run into the car yeah so yeah turns out the uh yes that is definitely a thing oh my gosh all right quick story on that so like i everybody knows at this point i enjoy doing some electrical work i am not a licensed electrician but uh yeah established established uh but um when we've got our car and i i actually look i very much feel like um charging at 120 is completely reasonable i don't think everybody needs 240 like i think if you work at home and you're driving like a few times a week even if you're like running kids to school and stuff like that like when we were when we had the bolt and we were driving the kiddo to school six miles each way every day it was no problem on the 120 volts yeah if you're if you're regularly keeping it charged up to your 80 or whatever overnight and you're not a rush right but me being me i was like i was like hey i'm gonna put a 240 outlet over here and i'm gonna i'm gonna put a charger in by uh this garage it's a detached garage uh from my house and i had i had an electrician thank you very much run power out here initially uh to the sub panel out here i didn't do it myself and uh but i was like oh man i know enough just to be dangerous i was like okay i need to put like a 50 amp to 50 to 60 amp breaker in this box um uh to run the two to run this uh outlet over here for the car i need to know the gauge of the wire that's run from the garage to the main uh terminal back to the house here and i was like this this is a thing that i know uh if it's not the right gauge you know you're gonna you're gonna be pulling too many amps over yeah exactly uh and you know i need to do an audit of what's on here etc etc etc so i did it all and i was like i'm right on the cusp i'm right on the i'm right on the cusp here it's not there's not a lot of headroom but i think it would be fine i could repull wire that's thicker but then the conduit is not it's going to be a pain in the butt the for for a thicker wire for for a lower gauge wire i don't want to do that let me just call an electrician i'm gonna call an election call an electrician dude pops out the breaker on one end pops out the breaker on this end pops in a new breaker pops in a new breakers like you're good i look i don't know if you're hiring mob electricians or what they're like they're like you're good like your your gauges are good you're you're good here um and then i was like damn it and what was that like 500 bucks so the reason i wound up doing it was uh when i got my charger for here it was actually reimbursed from the uh yeah yeah so they covered it amazing so he actually installed the charger too um and they were like did you get him to do a 240 volt plug or did you just do do you do it straight into the wall no no 240 volt okay perfect so you can take it with you if you should you move or whatever yeah it's a it's a box mounted on the outside and then the charger plugs into the box okay uh so the uh amazingly though will would you believe it we were reimbursed from our electric company um for fifteen hundred dollars uh this thing in yeah yeah pretty good how much do you think it costs uh how much do you think to the to the penny how much do you think it costs for that electrician to fourteen hundred ninety nine dollars fifteen hundred dollars right right that's that's better than the pg and e reimbursement we're like hey we'll reimburse you fifteen hundred dollars and it's twenty five hundred dollars to do the thing that you're getting reimbursed for so wait that's that doesn't that sucks yeah no it's bad it's like like well because so when we had to do a hot water heater a few years ago we were like oh let's see if there's any kind of rebates or anything like i'll buy the i'll buy the eco-friendly and i looked at it i was like yeah okay so we can buy we can get 1500 bucks back on the five thousand dollar hot water heater or we can just buy a 2100 hot water heater and pay to have it installed ourselves yeah and like hey guess which one we chose it was a pretty easy decision look i want i want your audience to know that i am uh i am actually a very nervous person when it comes to safety in the house this whole conversation is shocking to me i i um i respect electricity and and water and plumbing and all sorts of things but i do like to have a good understanding i'm i like to have a good understanding and i do i do get permits and i try to make sure everything is legit because i do feel like if i sell this house i don't want somebody else to open a thing and be like what the hell did this guy do look that's gonna happen no matter what we've lived here for almost 20 years and like i lived that life for the first 10 and then the second 10 i'm like you know what whoever gets this good luck they're gonna raise this thing and just build a new house here you know that is true in my neighborhood now whoever gets this house is absolutely just going to bulldoze this house and yeah and put up some uh horrible thing can i can i do you get the thing with your kid when you're with your kids when you're doing a project like this i the other day i bought a i bought a sink snake you know those little plastic ones you jam down the sink to like jam the hair clog out so i don't have to take the drain so gross i look it's anytime you have to do any kind of hair plumbing stuff it's just a nightmare horror show it is oh it just gets so gross in there yeah it's so yeah so wait did you get the little plastic one with the ridges that basically you like zip tie through yeah so that's what i've always used in the past and those are great because the zip ties are pronged yeah and you jam them down there and then you pull it back and it pulls it all up the biomatter whatever is happening it's it smells like a swamp down there when you break the seal on that it's bad that's bad it's like cthulhu down there it is just bad let me tell you though yeah so i bought one i saw one that was like oh it's got a stainless steel wire it's wrapped in plastic it's got like a little it looks like a it's like a spiky thing on the end but it doesn't have the fish hook the barb the barbs okay but it's not a true snake it's not something you're feeding forever down the pipe it is just it's like four feet long it's longer it's a long run yeah okay so i was like oh this is gonna be great i'm gonna do this i'm gonna i'm gonna this is i'm gonna try this new one it's gonna go all the way down i don't want to have to take the i won't have to take the gooseneck off this is gonna be fantastic and um i used it and it immediately started draining better and i was like oh this is great great but when i pulled it up nothing was on the thing i was like this is a win-win i love this is fabulous down the line baby yeah so shit ran downhill yeah and uh it turns out downstream of that drain is my bathtub drain and my kitchen sink drain yeah and what i did was i pushed the the crap from in the bathroom sink yeah to block up the tub and the and the kitchen and then also eventually the bathroom sink so like once enough water was in there every you know the water was coming out of the tub and it was uh-huh it's not what you want back flowing up into into the into the tub or oh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah it was like the black water coming into the tub is not what you want no no no so so i'm sorry this i should have given you a trigger warning on this i realize you had some flooding issues it's just like it's so gross i i hate cleaning drains so much it's my is my least favorite so i i come in there and i told my my we you know we have one bathroom so it's like when the bathroom's not working right it's a little urgent and i was like please for the love of god let the toilet come in after the bathtub drain and it did so we were cool on that front yeah um and i'm sitting there and my daughter comes in i was like you don't want to see what's coming out of the tub right now it's gross and she was like oh how long until you call the plumber oh and i was like wow wow you're not even gonna give me wow i i've lived here for 20 years i've never had to call the plumber oh like i've called the plumber for like wood yeah i mean yeah good call um you know at three o'clock in the morning and the day before thanksgiving when one of us ran a bunch of sweet potato peels down the garbage disposal not gonna say who that was but it wasn't me was that a bad thing for the garbage disposal sweet potato peels i'm gonna go and tell you it was great for the garbage disposal it loved them but they came up in the bathtub and and you know okay okay in a one bathroom house with 20 people coming over for thanksgiving in six hours not a great time uh so i didn't call the plumber on that one you know i anyway i was like i'm not gonna call the plumber so i went out to the garage to look for the snake yeah because you know at first i was like maybe i can plunge this and there's too many outs there's no plunging it's just the air goes straight out the kitchen sink just spurting black goo out of lasting horrors out there and she's like it's making a weird sound in the kitchen i'm like yeah i know so um i'm like i can't find the snake and then i had a vague memory of the last time this happening saying i'm never using this fucking snake again this one sucks it's too heavy it's like it's all rusty and gross it's the one of the ones you hook up to your drill that you can no i like i'm that does seem scary to me i mean also i don't have a high enough torque drill for that i have just baby drills mostly um i'm gonna buy another one the next time i need a snake and like it was like it was like the you know dental plan lisa needs braces dental plan right so i went to ace hardware and i bought the plumbing snake and i the the woman in line in front of me is trying to like she clearly here visiting on vacation And she like Hey what some good place to eat And her husband looks at the guy with a with two different kinds of plumbing snake It's like, he's not in a chatting mood, honey. I need to get home. He's like, yeah, like it's four o'clock in the afternoon on Friday. You don't come to the store and buy a plumbing snake. Cause shit's going well in your life. Two different types. So you're like, one of these has to work. Yeah. Well, they closed it. They closed at six. So I was like, I got to get, I got to get my, anyway. So I come back with all this stuff and my daughter's like, you should just call the plumber. I was like, I'm not calling the damn plumber. Yeah. And so I get it out. I pull out maybe the most horrifying thing I've ever seen in the tub before. Yeah. And you put it in a dish towel and smack it with a brick. Well, no. So it's like wrapped into the end of the snake. And I'm like, hey, somebody needs to bring me a bucket. It's so gross. It's like two feet long. It's just kind of stretched out. it is really just like it's something that if you've never done a drain before or like art of home you just you're never prepared for it man it's bad at least now at least now this long end i know it's all of our stuff like the first time i did it i was like oh shit this is the people who lived here before me yeah yeah um so i got it out and i was like hey i want you all to appreciate the horrors that i witnessed yeah when i have to do this when i say hey can we please use the drain thing and clean it every time we use the shower this is what i'm talking about yes the the the like a mesh net thing that goes over or the look yeah there's no tub shroom strong enough i don't i hate the shroom the shroom it sucks it's i don't use the shroom i use it's a different thing but like yes and i'm like i am a bald man this is not contributing to this yeah yeah this is all you guys i just need to let you all know this is not a me issue this is you issue and like i don't know why you guys i'm looking at you children can't brush your teeth are you just squirting toothpaste into the sink are you just upside down toothpaste into the sink i can brush my teeth and it gets on the toothbrush what are you doing i okay i i have the same like i walk into the bathroom and there's like a huge blue smear across the white vanity i'm like how did you not notice this it's two feet long it's just and then it's just like okay now i'll just push it down into the tree and be like okay yeah no it all disappears when it goes in the drain no until dad is in there wrestling with an anaconda sized biomass that is like resident evil style villain is in our drain you don't understand somebody needs to come in here and tell me if they see a weak spot if you see like yeah if there's some kind of orange eye opening up i need to know hey hey uh i'm gonna send pictures of this to miyazaki for the elven ring sequel and uh like i so i i had it on the thing and i was out there in the back cursing and trying to untwist it off the other way with like and like i i wear rubber gloves when i'm doing this because is gross yes but like the end of that thing's pointy and like you can't hear like it always breaks the seal you are you are like minutes away from a the the prequel or the intro to a contagion movie or something where you look at your glove and you're like oh no no well so nobody i was like hey i want you all to come out and witness the horrors that i go through for you yes so you wait you did call family out to witness it because they wouldn't come out they were like i don't need to see this it's like i think you do i do the same thing i'm like family family come up look at what we're meeting look at what you've made me do look at this yeah i mean at least look i have hair so i'm complicit in the whole thing but uh but it is unbelievable you do need to call somebody to witness it because it is a thing that you're just like if i describe this it doesn't won't do its justice you need to see it you know it's yeah this is some blight town business here baby have you seen um i had a friend who and i'm very curious about this uh because i do like gadgets and tech and stuff uh the air guns that you shoot down the drain so i got one of those oh okay because i was like this is gonna solve all my problems solve everything this is what problem could this introduce none but because my house is stupid and all the like so all of the gray water drains drain into one line because like it's shared wall kitchen and bathroom are on the same wall yeah the kitchen sink in the bathroom the dishwasher are all in the same wall so the bathroom sink the kitchen sink the dishwasher all drain directly into the same one and a half inch or two inch line yeah and then the toilet has a four inch line or three inch line whatever they get that goes straight into the main sewer drain so when i used it it just started blasting shit out of the out of the um and you can't seal them up you can't like put a stopper in them it's not gonna do it so when i put the stopper in the kitchen sink it just blew out the dryer the the dishwasher vent oh like it blew that you know that little metal cap on it it just went and shot up and hit the ceiling yeah that's not gonna do it there's not like i think it would work the other one i see is the one that is like a hose end that has like you put like a rubber washer that's the size of the drain on yeah and then you take the um uh you take the the the gooseneck off of like your your bathroom sink your kitchen sink or whatever yeah and you run this in there and it kind of like power washes the inside of your pipes you say like the p-trap like at the bottom of the yeah yeah yeah sink okay yeah yes so i have a i have a power washer and i bought an attach i have not you tried this yet that the jets come they is this what you're talking about they face backwards almost and it'll push the thing through it does like both directions kind of yeah okay yeah yeah it shoots out from the front but then like shoots out from the back to kind of propel it forward i used to my basement before we had it redone recently used to clog constantly at the exit of the house and it would back flow with all the sewage from the house oh thank you it was yeah really nasty stuff uh and so i have a whole collection of snakes and and do that because did you did you have a tub at least down there to collect it all or is it just coming out on the ground came out on the ground this was unfinished the basement was unfinished at the time but it was like right before it exited the house the sewer line there was this uh there was a trap there and it was just that trap would just get clogged with everything and um and i would so if i this is gross i'm sorry for just bringing this up but if i got if i got a whiff let's say i would be like everybody stop and then i'd go down there nobody do anything and then i'd have to go be like we're at the we're at the we're at the edge of a knife here folks and then i'd be like you know and then sometimes i'd be too lazy and be like we're probably good and then there was always a mistake it was always a mistake which i should have should have cleaned it out so this is why plumbing much versus electrical i feel like electrical i understand a little bit more of how electricity works i water is a living water and this biomass you're basically dealing with like things that are fighting against you i so i've always said if you own a home you are basically just fighting entropy and water just wants to be 100 yeah water just wants to be in your house and like you don't want water in your house but you need water in your house right and as soon as you've got the water in your house you're just fighting it you're just constantly trying to manage water in your house it's great when it comes out of the faucet comes out of anywhere else you're you're really sad i'm gonna go ahead and say i what i will say is that at least when you mess up with electricity it's over quick right like and so are you maybe i mean look you're not gonna like it's not like you mess up with plumbing you get cholera and then and then you know that's a bad way to go you know or like like mold is a thing i i feel like i constantly look i live a mile from the ocean let me tell you about mold well i yeah and like jersey here it's just 95 humidity now constantly um like they're um my son i don't know how they did this but somehow we have got two floors and somehow my kitchen started dripping from uh my kitchen's on the first floor and i went upstairs i was like what have you what were you doing up here he's like taking a shower i was like okay and so i had i cut and now i probably could have left it but i cut the drywall out of the ceiling because in my mind i'm like oh man is this gonna be a mold thing like is there just in my my imagination starts running wild like oh that ceiling's wet it was dripping the the uh the beams going across are now soaked they're gonna rot and i've got a and this has happened twice to me and i think the third time and so enough times where i'm like i might just put a panel on the ceiling i would like if the whole ceiling i don't like drop ceilings but if i could just remove this i would just have this yeah yeah because do you did um do you have a so my kid likes to take really hot showers yeah and when i walk in after she's taking a shower i'm like the walls are literally just dripping water yeah like thankfully when we painted that room we did the anti-mold like the all the coatings and all like i sherman williams is like hey do you want this yeah do them all put them all in there do you want eggshell or do you just want the plastic lacquer yeah i want i want the one that looks like shiny like you like you spray blasted plastic on the whole thing um in retrospect do you have a vent in there does it does an exhaust you know that's an interesting question vinny no we do not they didn't put those in we have a window but it also looks like our next door neighbors are up a little bit so it gives them a pretty good view on like the waist up on whenever you're in the shower yeah um which like i understand her desires to not have that open i kind of don't mind but you know that's me that's you right um so yeah we know no exhaust uh it's it's not great um that's a hard one to put in after the fact unless your bathroom is is it is it it sounds like it is because you have a window outside wall could you exhaust you gotta run it through the ceiling and then out yeah it's a roof project when we do the roof we're gonna we're gonna put a bathroom vent in oh okay and then it's like just exhaust out there then it just exhausts straight out the roof yeah yeah yeah exactly that sounds like a word i would use in that case soffit i love that word yeah i don't know what it means but it sounds cool it's cool you can call anything soffits all over the place they want to put soffits in the basement soffits on the roof so it's the left of me soffits to the right yeah yeah uh molds uh a thing that um uh a soffit could have a problem with i don't know yeah i don't know it's probably fine um bitty caravella thank you so much for coming by what where where can people find you oh my gosh people will we didn't even make it through a quarter of these questions will uh we made it through four or five questions depending on how we count them we didn't talk about peak shaving no we we didn't talk about usb outlets which good god no wait no oh man i'm gonna have to come back how about dumb phones is this a real market no uh we didn't talk about 3d printers i've got some thoughts about 3d printers offloading compute to the cloud in the future yeah no don't know about that one wait you don't think that's gonna happen i i don't look man i think we might be trading seeds for currency in 60 66 months okay um uh yeah the uh has everything are we done with the everything has wi-fi but now we're up to everything has ai in it that's that's like when your toothpaste got 4k hey you want some 4k toothpaste vinny yeah also your toothpaste tube is bluetooth you just tied to it'll let you know when the toothpaste tube is empty i couldn't i i don't need bluetooth to know when the toothpaste tube is empty it turns out my favorite question here that you you were like this is really hard is things that are genuinely better as quote smart devices i i okay yeah i devoted kind of a lot of brain time to this yesterday okay this i don't feel like was it could be a whole show i'm not sure that i could come up with one thing i think actually that's not true i really like the lighting automation in the house it turns out it's really nice to not at the end of the night have to walk around and turn off every lamp in the house and then in the in the afternoon when it starts getting dark in here to turn on all the lamps is it it's better but it was a lot of work to get it to the point that it was better okay i don't know that i would call that smart it's like i could have done all this with timers and been fine except i guess in the winter time it happens earlier in the summertime it happens later so there'd be some inefficiency but also the bad the bulbs cost nothing to run now so who cares it's probably fine i think if you ever wind up diving into that you probably have to have some ground rules for what is smart right like yeah there's a coffee maker that turns on on a timer is that smart or does it happen right no right so but a coffee maker that you can control with your phone is that smart maybe Yeah, right. So I think you probably need some ground rules for that one. So I am, I know you're trying to get out of here, but I am very much a low home automation person right now, but I'm not opposed to it. And in there, especially localized, I am opposed to automation that breaches the house, but local automation, stuff that I can control within the house, I'm not opposed to. Like, like, I really love when I opened my back door to go in the garage, both the back door and it's after dark, the back door light turns on and the garage light turns on. I love this. That's cool. Okay. Okay. Yeah. Like, it's fantastic. It's a fantastic feature for me. It stays on for five minutes after I opened the door. And it's not motion sensing stuff. This is, uh, it's a door. It's on the door. Yeah. It's like when the door opens, it turns on if it's dark out. Yeah. and it's great because like when i take the dog out and i'm like hey man you got five minutes to poop you want to poop five minutes the light turns off i know his he's like oh man my time's up i gotta go real fast now yeah yeah um so like in that like that kind of stuff is really really good i kind of don't think about it anymore yeah the other stuff the stuff that you're talking about like your wi-fi connected like washer dryer like the washer and dryer pretty convenient for us because they're in our garage and we can't hear the buzzers from inside the house but you could look at a watch but but like i use the dry i use the wet sense thing so it's like indeterminate like it means that i get i i know when it's dry and my stuff doesn't get wrinkly which is actually nice okay but it's like nice not actually better this is why this is the question yeah what is what is what is better i think so a couple years ago i bought one of those like low profile kind of air like fans it's like a cycling air in from the outside fan not necessarily like making it cool like an exchange yeah and i put it in the office because it often when i'm sitting here with the door closed for hours and hours and hours it often gets kind of carbon carbon dioxide in here and i get a little sleepy yeah um and i didn't it was like 20 bucks more to get the smart one that i could hook up to home assistant and i kind of wish i'd ponied up for that because they intentionally make the non-smart ones stupid so you can't just put it on a controlled receptacle oh so like you have to hit the button on it to turn it on when the power is up you can't it doesn't have like a hard rocker switch or something yeah so i wish i could like i wish i could have a co2 sensor in here yeah that just when it gets above like 500 ppms it just flips on the fan right yeah is that necessary no i in reality i just leave it running all the time a little bit and it's fine i just find that like when i buy devices a lot of the times i just never connect them uh i just never connect them they're they're whatever they are i just don't whatever connectivity they have i just don't um and uh that's um that's me and so i'm curious like what people yeah like that's a great those are great examples of things i think that make it uh easier or or do the thing you wanted to do but like our our stove i think i talked about this on the podcast before but like we bought a stove and we wanted i wanted one with like a high heat 25 000 btu burner yeah and i didn't want to buy a wolf or a viking or something stupid like that this this is a conventional gas stove conventional gas stove um and because we live in northern california where there's a large asian population i was able to get a walk burner which is like a 25 000 btu burner yeah on this samsung stove so we bought that one it's been fabulous but it's all internet connected because in order to get the lock burner you had to get like the fancy version and what does it tell you look man it's you can put food in it in the morning and then turn it on with your phone from work or something i don't it's a stove oven it's a stove oven yeah yeah stove oven um so i hooked it up samsung bought smart things and somebody had hijacked my email address on Samsung's smart things home automation stuff. Okay. So in order to turn it on and use it, I had to like move that account out of India because it was somebody with an Indian email. Like somebody set it up as the region in India. And Samsung was like, nobody ever moves from India to the United States. That's impossible. So I had to get them to delete the account and then create a new one and then find all the other places. And I hooked it all up and I got it plugged in. I got it working. And then I was like, and then the time changed. And even though it was connected to the internet, it didn't automatically change the freaking clock on the thing. Because like that really all I wanted out of an internet connected stove is for the time to change automatically on the clock. That's all. That's all I was looking for. That's a reasonable thing. Right. Yeah. Yeah. We still live in daylight savings changes. It would be nice if that thing just fixed itself. Don't want to have to think power goes out. I want to just be right. Right. Yeah. Right. Yeah. No, no, none of that. So I blocked it from the network immediately after that. And I've never thought about it again. It turns out I don't need an interconnected stove. I made a, oh God, look, oh, we should have said this. We should have said it. Happy Vinny and Will yell about things they don't like. The last thing I'll say, I made a subnet at some point for my Internet of Things, right? My IoT devices. And I realized I only got like two things on there. Like it's really. Yeah. I just um there are probably more I could put on but then then I I'm lazy and I'm like well when I put it on the IOT thing it doesn't work like can my Sonos speakers go on there but then then I have to make so many rules for it to actual like get through to my network and so when I say I have two things on there it's like two things that I just work still on the IOT thing there's probably more I should put on there like my Nvidia shield but then I have to punch through to my Plex server and yeah i'm too lazy to do all the hard work i look that whole thing i'm almost out of ip addresses so i'm gonna have to deal with it at some point sooner rather than later oh that's amazing do a whole show about uh your ip ranges and uh let me let me tell you about light bulbs you start putting light bulbs on and all of a sudden everything fills up so each one gets its own ip address oh wow okay it's more reliable than the zigbee or z wave stuff or the or the matter and threads but uh but yeah each one gets his own ip address and okay i didn't set up a vlan for it which in retrospect was probably a mistake and now i'm never going to change that because it works do you um do you have a spreadsheet with that of course not that's insane okay no i i have a managed network switch that just tells me everything that's on the network and what the ip addresses are so it's much that's that's a totally reasonable that's just the way yeah yeah yeah i i should show you my spreadsheet at some point it's dumb i want to see the spreadsheet yeah send me send me a screenshot we'll make it the show art that sounds great yeah great yeah put all your pii on there too vinnie caravella uh next lander yes next lander.com patreon.com slash next lander we talk about video games we have a movie podcast that is fantastic the watch cast we have the ramble cast which is similar to this except even uh more wandering and rambling somehow slightly ramblier i would say yeah um never been a better podcast podcast is a fave yeah never been a better podcast if you if you know some of our stuff from the beast cast from giant bomb it is very similar to that will you're coming by we're doing a bunch of stuff on mondays all the time multiplayer madness mondays yeah at the time of this recording we are engaged in a run of raft surviving on a raft uh tons of stuff happening there thanks everybody for their support and will i thank you for allowing me on here and i think the patience of your audience for suffering me on here as i just ask a bunch of questions look everybody's thinking it i mean this is the thing i i often say that there are no bad questions there are only brad questions so okay when you when you asked about the best local email client i was like that is absolutely a brad question because i i don't i don't truck with local email in 2026 no okay um but yeah we will we'll have to have you back maybe we can get to the another third of the questions at some point in the future i'm sure i'll have more don't worry thanks for coming by vinnie it's always a pleasure man thanks for having me thanks again vinnie for coming by uh if you don't uh know about nextlander go over to twitch.tv slash nextlander or patreon.com slash nextlander and check out what they're doing they do good stuff and uh they do good video game coverage and they have a lot of fun doing it i i quite enjoy it uh now before i get to the part where i thank our patrons for supporting the show I would like to apologize to the plumbers. I repeated something earlier in this show that a plumber friend of mine told me years ago. And it was potentially, I don't want to give the wrong impression. I want everybody to know that I understand that plumbing is a high skill thing. I'm doing amateur hour plumbing at best. And at some point in the future, when I do need the expert services of a master craftsman, I hope that your people will continue to help me in exchange for money and or services. So yeah, sorry. Sorry for the thoughtless. I think I shared some plumber humor that as not a plumber is probably not appropriate. So anyway, apologies to all the plumbers. So now we've reached the part of the show where I thank our patrons. These are the folks who support the show. We wouldn't be here without you all because this is a listener supported show. We don't run ads. So if you would like to find out how you can support the show, you can go to patreon.com slash techpod, where for $5 a month, you get access to the fabulous TechPod Discord, which is full of beautiful nerds just like you. You also get access to the monthly Patreon exclusive episode, which is, let's see, last month I just sat and talked for a while about stuff I was working on and answered a bunch of questions. We talk about projects that are upcoming or maybe too small to make a full episode out of. sometimes we talk about things that we thought were interesting and then maybe were dead ends from an episode standpoint uh but are still kind of interesting and worth discussing um it's it's always a good time it's a little more casual chat than than what we usually do on the main pod so uh again it's patreon.com slash tech pod and we do appreciate everybody who supports the show uh but we want to do an extra special shout out to our executive producer to your patrons including infelicitous rips jordan lippett octothorpe bunny fiend david allen james cammick and that's it That's it for this month. Thanks everybody for supporting the show. We will be back next week with another edition of the TechPod. I'm going to do questions, I think, at the end of the month. So it's going to be me answering questions. We might get a special guest for that. I got to see if the person I have in mind is available. We'll bring them in. And if not, then I'll do it myself. So send your questions into techpod at content.town if you're not on the Discord. And if you are on the Discord, you can go to the Question Seeking Answers channel and just post them in there. And I will pull, I will look deep into those two sections of the website and the internet, and I will pull out the very best questions and we will answer them on next week's edition of the TechPod. Thanks everybody for listening. And please consider the environment before printing this podcast. We'll be right back. We'll see you next time.
