So tonight at the State of the Union, you will have the Team USA men's ice hockey team there following their gold medal that they won on Sunday morning beating Canada in overtime 2-1. In an awesome game, an incredible moment for the country, first time they won the gold since the Miracle on Ice in 1980. Some people just can't help but make it political. And as I posted something on social media yesterday about this, I said the beauty of Jack Hughes and all these guys is that nothing they did was about using their platform to rip America. Now, that doesn't mean that they're like conservatives or Trump voters or anything like that. It just means that they understood the mission. And for them, the mission was about making this about America first and foremost. This is all about our country right now. I love the USA. I love my teammates. It's unbelievable. The USA Hockey Brotherhood is so strong. And we have so much support from next players. I'm so proud to be American today. That's what it's about. That's not a political statement. If you make that a political statement in your own mind, then you're the one being political. We agree? So I put up a whole post about this yesterday on my Facebook page, Pete Mundo on KCMO. And of course, you know, I can't go through every comment. but I like to try to sense the narrative of what some people are saying. And there's always trolls in there and whatever. That's fine. I mostly ignore it. And there were some people saying, oh, yeah, well, Jack Hughes came out last year and supported Pride Night. I'm like, okay. And? How is that at all relevant to him cheerleading America after winning the gold medal? It doesn't matter to me. Nobody cares. And it has nothing to do with my point, which is that he did not use the biggest platform he's ever had to be political. So here's what Jack Hughes, the guy who scored the game-winning goal for Team USA, had to say in an interview last year. That's making the rounds of some kind of gotcha if you say you're a fan of Jack Hughes being rah-rah America after the win the other day. Our team participated in its annual Pride Night in December, but this season a bunch of players and some entire NHL teams have declined to participate Are you surprised to see this kind of change The team I play for the Devils like we really support that And you know we really welcoming organizations So I think a bunch of the guys in our team, we're looking forward to that. And then, you know, obviously with how we grew up, my family really supports that too. So I can't speak for other teams, but, you know, I know in New Jersey, that was a night that I think everyone on our team is really welcoming and they know it's really important. So it wasn't even a thought about not doing it for us. Okay. Fine. That's how he feels. When Jack Hughes scored the game-winning goal, I didn't sit there and think to myself, boy, this guy, he must absolutely love Trump, and boy, that's why I'm rooting for him. No, I was rooting for him because he was wearing the Team USA jersey. And then I was rooting for him even more after the game when he went out there and he made it all about the country. and didn't make it about anything other than his love for his country that's it it's not a gotcha to be like see he supports pride night it's well that's kind of the point he can do that and still just love his country and love america and understand the moment which he did the other day john everyone's assignment is to be yourself i just like that he didn't like try to couch it and weigh the words and go well obviously some of our fans tonight might be a little upset but some of the guys on the team really like it he just said it yeah he didn't weigh it out in his mind he's just being himself yep he just said you know this is how i view it support it cool okay great do i have to agree with every take that jack hughes has no do i expect myself to no why would i i don't agree with most people on certain things i mean i don't agree with kate i don't agree on everything I mean, like, so what? What's the point? Yeah, you can say what you think without challenging the other person. He didn't say, well, if you don't agree with me, fill in the blank. He didn't do that at all. He just said, here's what I think. In which case, you know what? Great. More power to him. Whatever. It's all good. Doesn't really matter to me. What mattered to me is that he used his platform here the last 48 hours to do nothing but cheerlead for America. And that's what matters. And that's what we're losing every single day. And you know you had this clip from yesterday Jack Hughes talking about going to the State of the Union tonight And once again here his perfect answer courtesy of the Daily Mail Well we just we athletes We so proud to represent the U And when you get the chance to go to the White House meet the president you know we're proud to be Americans. And, you know, that's so patriotic. So no matter what your views are, we're super excited to go. How do you feel about the women not going? Everyone's giving us backlash for all the social media stuff today, but it's so negative. People are so negative out there and they're trying to find a reason to just like put people down and make like make something out of almost nothing i think everyone in that locker room you know knows how much we support them how proud we are of them and we feel the same the same way we feel about them we know they feel that way about us that's great from jack hughes isn't that the perfect answer absolutely we're proud to be americans no matter what your views are we're super excited to go to the White House. People are so negative out there. They're trying to find a reason to put people down and make something out of nothing. Meaning Trump saying, hey, I can't have you guys out there and not have the women. They won the gold too. It's just Trump being Trump. That thing upsets you. You know, you got to go to the doctor today and have your TDS checked, please. The guys in the locker room, two, four, two. Yes. Two, four, two. Like they were supporting the ladies. Yes. They're chanting two for two when Trump says he's inviting the women because two for two, meaning the men and the women won the gold medal in ice hockey at the Olympics. So they're on board with it. People are looking for a reason to be offended with some of this stuff. And yes, this does happen. I'm not going to deny it does happen in some cases across the political spectrum. But this one, give it up, man. Jack Hughes is saying this is about country. And guess what? Country is bigger than Trump. Country is bigger than Obama. country's bigger than Biden Bush Republican Democrat this country's bigger than all those things combined okay it's about us it's not about the individuals that we want to turn it into or make it about break the bubble get out of it you know surround yourself with people that don't just view the world the exact way that you do we all can do a better job of that and these guys have put on a master class the last 48 hours in not kowtowing to any kind of cancel culture to not falling for any kind of the gotcha moments that people are trying to put them in and they have just continued to beat the drum of america america america and that it That all they got to do That how you win in sports I think that how you could win in pop culture in Hollywood in music Michael Jordan's famous line, Republicans buy sneakers too. They seem to have all forgotten that. And what Jack Hughes is saying here isn't even about Republican or Democrat. It's just about America. And if they stay on that line, guess what? No matter what the media tries to do, they're not going to break them. You can tell in the questioning there on that Daily Mail piece. Well, you know, what do you think about what the president said about the women? He didn't start, like, fumbling his words and being like, well, yeah, about that. Well, I don't totally agree with how the president said it. He just said it's much to do about it. It's nothing. There's nothing there there. no matter how hard you try there's nothing there there and the more of that we get the better off we're all going to be because then the media will slowly stop trying to put people into these corners i love it these guys have just been tremendous and so easy to root for and i hope they get a massive standing ovation today from both sides of the political aisle i mean if this can't get a rousing standing ovation, I don't know what can tonight.
