Summary

O'Connor & Company covers Michigan's basketball championship, Virginia's redistricting referendum polling poorly for Democrats, allegations against Eric Swalwell regarding intern misconduct, and Spencer Pratt's LA mayoral campaign gaining traction despite residency challenges.

Insights
  • Virginia Democrats' aggressive redistricting scheme is backfiring politically, with early voting data showing Republicans more motivated than in the gubernatorial election, suggesting potential referendum upset
  • Competitive primaries surface candidate vulnerabilities effectively—the California governor's race is exposing Eric Swalwell's alleged pattern of predatory behavior toward young staffers through Democratic activists
  • Spencer Pratt's campaign benefits from Karen Bass's poor political instincts; attacking his homelessness due to fire damage actually strengthens his narrative as an outsider fighting city negligence
  • Democratic messaging strategy failures persist—naming redistricting legislation 'fair' when it's gerrymandering, and failing to learn from 2024 primary mistakes by not vetting candidates thoroughly
  • Early voting patterns in Virginia redistricting referendum indicate grassroots Republican motivation may overcome Democratic organizational advantages, signaling potential midterm momentum

And I'm gonna turn it off. Yeah. Now on 105.9 FM and streaming worldwide on the WMAL app. O'Connor and company. Yeah. Yeah. It's 507 on this Tuesday morning. It's the seventh day of April, and it's the day after the Michigan Wolverines win the national championship and basketball, which I can legitimately say I predicted because I've got the bracket to prove it. I predicted. I'm I'm not sure if you're going to be able to do that. I mean, I'm not sure if you're going to be able to do that. It's Michigan. You just give me a warning that you're starting to talk on the radio before we start talking. Hey, it's time to start the show. I mean, we do have a clock staring at us. Giant red numbers ticking down. It's relentless every morning. It happens. Um Michigan won the national championship for the first time in 37 years. I was assured last year that if we didn't hit a pair of free throats to win the is this going to be the only time we talk about Michigan? The whole Australian sport in general? Yeah if if that if that if they're there, they're great. Out of the victors. Hello the victors. So we're used to hearing this basketball. I know it's understandable because I can you know it's very rare that I can legitimately say that I predicted because we have you do your bracket And I literally predicted Michigan beating the University of Connecticut and this championship game very rare that I'm that accurate unbasketball I got lucky and very exciting that the the school that I grew up next to near like 20 miles away from did you win anything? Bragging rights bragging rights not money or anything. I didn't put any money on it But I do I won I won the entire Town hall does a bracket every year all the people who work at town hall You're the boss there. Why don't you so I set Like a free lunch or something. I thought that well because I want I felt bad But then I married and I was like lamenting that to Meredith and she said first of all It's good for their character that that you won. Yes, you won for you're the boss for a reason and also Technically in this bracket. I'm not that there are two people in the bracket who actually Are higher up on that because being editor is not the boss as you know, you're the boss of the editorial I'm figure not possible, you know, right, right. There you go. I Get yourself a free lunch. Go get it. I should Day off Thank you, like the there should be some kind how could you possibly take a day off in this news cycle? Well, that's the problem Yeah, no, this is this is I Wish that people were more thoughtful of those of us who work in media political media because with Trump It is impossible To take a day off. Yeah, I am taking for the media everybody. Come on. Yes, exactly But I am taking two days off this week because it is the last two days of Passover tomorrow and the day after yeah turning my phone off Religious purposes. Yeah. Yeah, no one do anything crazy while I'm gone Speaking of doing crazy things can I should probably not just launch into the show talking about last night's basketball game? I should probably the reason I did is because I assumed and I'm guessing properly Anyone who's awake right now heading off to work or doing whatever they're doing did not stay up to watch the game Yeah, I which by the decisions people come on including me by the way I had I went to sleep not knowing if Michigan one, you know, and then but now I woke up to that great news Coming up at 635 Sam Rosenblum running for Frederick County School Board will join us 705 Jim Hansen latest on Iran 735 brings this Margaret Mary Margaret Oland who covers the White House for daily wire a Very busy day yesterday at the White House from the Easter egg rolled of the press conference to ongoing plans for the next military Escalation in Iran 805 Tom Sauer former Navy commander get his perspective on what's about to go down in Iran I know that Thompson could friend as well looking forward to talking to Tom Naval Academy graduate and then a 35 check these latest on the DC mayoral race and other things going on there. So there's a quick rundown and once ahead and And you're I mean I'm set this a big college hoops fan. I do remember that he that Rutgers I think is his school of change. You don't know this about your own husband So I do know that he went to Rutgers because that's how we met But that's really the extent of my knowledge about what I was at the examiner or working In the space of building at the examiner. I should say his office was near mine And you didn't know anything about this. No, this is hilarious. Yeah, no I would often swing by and and say get to game last night Yeah, maybe it was just office talk and he didn't actually care about basketball although I happen to know he does care Yes, he likes basketball in his home in his own office. He actually has a basketball hoop behind his desk Yes, that is true. But now I've learned that Why he has warm feelings towards you He never told me that you guys were in the same office together or talked He had his office as he was always working on the mock-ups of the weekly magazine for Washington examiner And I had well I was in that space in two iterations in one space I was working on podcasts and doing some columns. I died at a little cubicle area out front Yeah, and then but in another iteration when the weekly standards offices were still there I was in my own office Sort of down the corridor from him because you know the standard was around the wing there if you remember Yeah, I had no idea. Well, this explains why he likes you Well, or maybe he likes Men who work with his wife and and have good professional relationships with his wife No, that's as if I have other professional relationships with men Really just to be that your your entire professional career You're pretty much just surrounded by women all the time or or work. No, I Or you just work so reliance right? Yeah, but I don't have a regular standing gig besides this one So you are my work husband. Wow. Thanks, and I'm not polyamorous. I'm not Lindy West over here You're it for me Larry It's a good opportunity by the way to remind everybody to subscribe to the mom wars that would be a Bethany's and it independently produced Podcast and sub-stack and also good opportunity to remind people that we are both married to other people. Yes Yesterday I have to tell you I was at the playground with a friend and her mom was sitting there and I Yawned at 5 p.m. And I said sorry I wake up very early several times a week I co-host morning radio and she said I know I listen to you and I was like, oh That's so nice at a park in Montgomery County Yes, and she said that Larry O'Connor and so she's a Jewish grandmother So just you know, there's some bluntness here and she said I like him, but he talks about that wife too much I was like I think that's actually really nice that he is so devoted to his wife that he talks about her with frequency And she said no I find it annoying I hope she likes Michigan basketball It's between the two. No wait tell tell Ethel. She's not wrong and My my wife would concur actually much prefer. There's nothing Meredith likes nothing More than going to a public event for the radio station and various things that we do out and People coming up and say you must be Meredith. I hear I hear about you all the time So Seth is also he hates he hates when I mentioned him in any way. He's a very private person and He he really does not like that. I when I say anything publicly about him and some of our kids are like that too. Yeah, yeah And by the way, it's lovely to hear him very flattering I'm humbled to hear that I'm your work husband. I just need you to know that there's a lot of women who make their way through this program You are you are polyamorous. I am not I'm the Lindy West in this situation I decide to call everybody my work sister Rather than wives, I think that just makes more sense then then it's unrequited our relationship by 15 Vince Colnays is redefining news talk with the Vince show It is a reflection of your response to this program that we get to take this thing to the next level these gigantic shows This is going to be so much fun It's unbelievable in-depth interviews live-caller interactions and a front-row seat to the most important conversations of the day I've got updates. I've got big stories. We'll sort through the truth of what's really going on to buckle up here. It comes The Vince show following listen on your favorite platform Bethany is spate of bad numbers here might have the Democrats and Abigail Spanberger roiling quite a bit in Virginia Although honestly Spanberger is only what three months into her Administration she does not have to run for reelection. She's basically setting everything up to be a running mate in the 2020 a presidential election It's almost like the CIA planned it She's probably not concerned about the numbers, but Democrats running down ticket and maybe even those concerned or interested in the redistricting scam might take notice of the fact that the numbers are Not approving of get a governor Abigail Spanberger's job performance or of what the Democrats are doing in fact As of now her approval rating is just at 47% disapproval 46% that is the worst favorability after only 80 days in office than any Virginia governor of this century Not good news and I'm talking going back Then I shouldn't say this century the end of last century as well George Allen Jim Gilmore Mark Warner Tim Cain Bob McDonnell Terry McCullough Ralph North and Glenn Yunk and all Had better approval rate. I guess that all those are all this century aren't they I Guess so so it would be interesting to see if Democrats choose two very unpopular governors at at the top of the ticket with Gavin Newsom and Abigail Spanberger and it's it's interesting also because traditionally you you kind of get people who were in Congress first but With Spanberger and with Newsom you can just see the effects of their governance by going to their states and in both places if you would like to murder someone if You you know if you have fit the right demographic, you'd be fine. So maybe they'll they'll pick up the coveted murderer Demographic there exactly that is it's huge. It can be the difference maker a Jim Garrity who writes columns at the Washington Post and at the National Review and he's a center right the political observer and also a virginian Makes a pretty good observation on this Virginia has never been a pro-trump state But as Glenn Yunk and demonstrated it's a purplish blue state where a Republican can win when the political environment is right Or the Democratic nominee is particularly bad Virginia's political culture is not comparable to California or Hawaii or Vermont and the state's Democratic state led to legislators are foolish to pretend that it is in other words they they won the governor's race and One larger majorities in the House of Delegates and in the Senate thinking that they can now govern like it's you know some radical very blue New England state or California and it's not Virginia is still Virginia and I think maybe they've gone a bit too far here in these first 80 days and The numbers for the redistricting scheme seem to bear that out as well Yeah, I wonder if it will change the way that they're governing though because From from my read on it. It looks like it's a response to the gerrymandering. What? What is the dystopian way? They're describing it the fair restore fairness to elections. Yeah When it is the most unfair Districting plan you'll ever see in your lifetime But there's so much to choose from and I just I wonder I wonder how much of it is sort of permeating because the the average Virginian as the average American Doesn't pay attention on a day-to-day level. Yeah news But I have to believe that what half what's happening in in Fairfax County with the prosecutors and That is sticking to some to some extent and there is not a faster ticket To unpopularity than knowing that you could be murdered at a bus stop and your your murderer will get away with it In my opinion. Yeah, it's it if Republicans know what to do with that kind of news Right, so that's a devastating political message and although as you've heard on this program with my Concerns about money being raised and money pouring into the Commonwealth and whether there is a strategy to win this referendum Despite all of that it does seem based on the early numbers that it seems to show That Republicans are very motivated in fact They're more motivated to come out and vote against this referendum Then they were motivated to vote against Abigail Spanberger in the last election in November The early numbers do not look good for the redistricting scam In fact, if you look at some of the early number data of the 676,000 Virginians who have voted 55% Cast their ballots in the five districts held by Republicans right now now that could mean that Republicans are coming out to keep the district It could mean Democrats are excited at the prospect of suddenly getting a Democrat Congressman in in Washington for them. It's impossible to read these tea leaves completely accurately But it hears a point that was written in the American Spectator magazine Back in 2022 thirds of Virginia's voters passed a referendum that amended the Commonwealth's Constitution and created the Virginia Redistricting Commission The VRC was meant to take redistricting away from partisan politicians to prevent the kind of gerrymandering Democrats are again trying to impose in the voters I think that's one of the key elements here is the Virginians that have a memory longer than a day and a half ago Remember and realize we just went through this We just modified the Constitution and we did it specifically to keep this kind of thing from happening Democrats hypocrisy is palpable here and I think that the whole Messaging that well the the Republicans did this in Texas. So we have to respond I don't think it's resonating with most Virginians who actually have a sentient brain No, nor should it but I think that Their bizarro name choice on this on this legislation is probably biting them because it is so brazen and Chutzpah dick, I can't I can't think of another word It is I don't think that's a word No, it's but it's absolutely word, but the chutzpah to stand there and say that this is about fairness Just call it like it is Right advanced advancing democratic ideals like a DI whatever whatever it is No But I think that the brazenness is is really scary honestly because People understand that they will do anything once they're in power. It's it's a spring referendum It's the only thing that's on the ballot and they're coming off of a big victory And I think their arrogance tells them that they think this is all gonna be about turnout. It's all gonna be about organization it's all gonna be about getting out the vote and guess what they have every right to be arrogant because They've got a machine in Virginia and as far as they're concerned They're gonna be able to find the votes as they like to say if necessary. We'll see we'll see We're not doing a victory lap here not even close to it We but but there are early indications here two weeks before the referendum that it could be an incredible upset and Republicans might prevail here and if that's the case, that's a really really really good headline going into the midterms this fall It's 524 Now on 105.9 FM and streaming worldwide on the WMA LA O'Connor and company It's 537. Good morning. Thanks for tuning into a counter company real fast a little addendum to our conversation about Virginia at a rally brewing this Saturday afternoon it looks like probably in the Fairfax County region still getting the details on that but I'll be there and as I get more details I'll let you know as the week goes on but just plan on hanging out and rallying against the referendum and gerrymandering scheme this Saturday in northern Virginia more to follow 635 will speak with Sam Rosenblum running for Frederick County School Board 705 Jim Hanson on Iran from an army perspective 735 Mary Margaret O'Lehan White House correspondent for Daily Wire 805 Tom Sauer will give this is his perspective on Iran from a Navy perspective And then at 835 Chuck Thies DC political analyst Slaria Conner with Bethany Mandel from a Bethany perspective. Good morning Bethany Good morning Larry O'Connor. I Just heard a day to be here You know the president the White House correspondence dinner is coming up the president will be in attendance I've just learned and I know this is gonna hurt a lot of people so brace yourselves everybody sit down buckle up The Huffington Post will not be attending the White House Correspondence Association dinner because of Donald Trump in attendance I know what's the point then it's hard to break honestly. What's the point of even just cancel the whole thing with our day? Yeah My favorite thing about About liberals is that how much they think we care about them? and so And I don't know maybe it's also of like a boomer thing, but when people announce that they're leaving and I don't care. Bye. I don't okay. Bye. Bye. It's fine Eric Swalwell member of Congress it still leads the polls amongst Democrats in the California governor's race now remember their primary which is set for June Is a jungle primary that means that there are no party affiliations everybody votes you can be a tourist from another country and we'll figure you're a citizen you can vote and Everybody votes across party lines and the two top vote getters move on to the general election And pull after pull for the last several months has shown because the Democrat field is so watered down that The two top vote getters at the moment are both Republicans the sheriff of Riverside County and Steve Hilton former Fox News Television host Hilton by the way just got Trump's endorsement which is odd I would think Trump would wait until after the primary to endorse just to sort of lock in the possibility that you'd get to Republicans at the top Eric Swalwell continues to be the top ranked Democrat and if someone's going to emerge and Be you know the lone Democrat for the general election Eric Swalwell seems to be He has the the inside track. Let's say So that's why this latest story is very interesting. You know how Bethany they say in DC. There are these open secrets Oh, yeah, everybody knew that it was an open secret. Nobody said it sort of the the Christian home Corey Lewandowski thing Well, that wasn't that wasn't really secret. It was just sort of openly discussed everywhere Well, also one of those open secrets that you hear about all the time, but you don't really have enough data or Specific reports to make any kind of claim so you can sort of dance around the story and you can make glancing references to it Is the story of Eric Swalwell's conduct with his staff in his congressional office? these are Open secrets that have been discussed in the corridors of power for many many years and now it appears that it might be reaching ahead Because an independent journalist who's a podcaster and a lawyer Has now come forward this person's name by the way is Cheyenne Hunt She says that she has received multiple Multiple reports and is working with young women who have been interns in the office. Here's what her video says Currently leading in the California governor's race has a known history of being predatory towards women and while it may be seen as politically Expedient to sweep this under the rug. It is the wrong thing to do and we know it. I worked on the hill I know many women who still do and this message that I received yesterday is not unique I have received others and there are many women who have reached out to other political commentators and to reporters with their stories This particular message follows the same pattern as the other allegations currently circulating You know Eric Swalwell has slept with many of his interns and makes them all sign NDA's so they don't speak up, right? And when I was 19 he tried hitting on me and sliding into my DMs And I have so many other friends that have similar experiences with him Like I said this message that I received is not an anomaly It's part of a pattern other commentators have come forward like this one saying that no less than a dozen people have come forward to Them alleging that Swalwell has had inappropriate relationships with young staffers for years All right, so now this could be a political dirty trick which by the way makes it newsworthy as well To just understand any criticism or any attacks on Eric Swalwell at the moment are coming from other Democrats All right that that he's he's in a primary fight right now when it's Democrats who were trying to tee up and and harm Eric Swalwell Chuck Ross at the Washington free beacon who is a pretty well sourced and pretty deliberate investigative reporter He has written this up now Based on all of these charges and also the pattern of behavior at the charges all have certain similar patterns to them Which is pretty typical for a predator like this other alleged predator like this So what do you make of this Bethany and how do you stay married to Eric Swalwell with all of this and the fang fang thing and all that jazz? So I'll answer the last question first. How do you stay married to him when they tell you who they are? Do you believe them? I said this yesterday about something else, but it's the same here. She knew who she was marrying There's there's not as many surprises when it comes to infidelity and predatory behavior as people like to believe there are Women go into it with eyes wide open and they know and it's a it's a an exchange that they're willing to make But I think that this is very good for Democrats It's not a process that we saw in the presidential race we did not see a competitive primary with Biden or with Kamala Harris and they swept things under the rug and they did not choose their best candidate going into the general and We saw the end result of that the they they crashed and burned and President Trump Trounced them in the popular vote and in every single swing state This it's good to have a competitive primary like this We're seeing the same in Maine with the Senate race with Graham Platner and Judy Mills It's it's getting down and dirty. This is what you're supposed to do in a primary All of this stuff is supposed to come out in a primary And the Democrats will be better for it. He's he's a gross guy And and it's good that she that this Cheyenne hunt woman Who's you know the head of a liberal activist group? She's a liberal. Yeah, it's it's very smart that she's doing this Because it's also sending a message to women in the Democratic Party that you are welcome here and That's not a message that I think a lot of Liberal women are hearing these days because They can't even define what a woman is under normal circumstances So, you know being pro-woman is is not a bad thing for Democrats. It's it's nice that they've gone back to it Yeah, a lot of Democrat activists and by the way, you're right the the attacks seem to be coming from more Liberal left-leaning activists, although I don't know if they have a candidate in this race I don't maybe Katie Porter. I suppose but she's pretty unlikable as well Not Peter Thiel not Or not I mean Tom Steyer, excuse me always confuse those two It's very interesting, but I can tell you a lot of Democrat activists a lot of people Organized and with their names on it say these allegations. I keep hearing them as well, you know, it is Eric's well Eric's wall will can't be our nominee. We're gonna get killed I don't agree with that if Eric's wall will emerges even in California. He will win this race That's just how California is I won't be convinced otherwise But this could harm him in a big way and we we will see because he has been an incredibly outspoken critic of President Trump And he has obviously been involved in some pretty Unsavory things in the past as we know and yet he always seems to escape by Shocking that he always seems to escape by it's 545. This isn't your average podcast. This pot is about to be crazy I don't even know what's gonna happen. This is full send. It's just like a boy scrap join the party We threw like a spontaneous party out of nowhere is crazy and we pulled off a crazy prank Pranks parties and viral culture at its wildest Just seeing like the guys that you brought in and like seeing their different personalities and stuff It's been entertaining dude. This could be the greatest content build of all time The full send podcast. Let's get ready to rumble. Follow and listen on your favorite platform. Let's do it We do love the Spencer Pratt L8 mayor's theme song take out the trash Sakura Especially bass Karen Bass is basura as you know, she's the current mayor of La and Spencer Pratt the reality television star has been mounting a pretty strong challenge he's currently running third in the vote and Is on a trajectory upwards so he could very well face off against Karen Bass in the general election should he emerge from the primary So now of course the long knives are out and they're trying to contend Democrats are that Spencer Pratt is ineligible to run for mayor because he doesn't live in Los Angeles anymore and it's true He has a mailing address in Carpentaria now where his father lives That's where he's been crashing now and again because his house burned down Bethany So that's a whole part of his Campaign is the fact that Karen Bass negligence allowed the palace aids to burn and has not done anything to reconstruct Yes, he owns a home in LA. It's an empty burned-out lot right now Does Karen Bass want to lose? Do you think that's what's going on here? Did she decide she's she's uninterested in continuing to have this job? She wants to pass the baton because I have never seen a worse Version of political instincts than this to hit someone who Had does not own a structure in the city because you let it burn down It's what he is running on if you're if you're looking for another kind of technicality to disqualify him fine but personally if I were advising Karen Bass's campaign Accentuating the fact that he is homeless because of you is not a road I'd go down That's really it's like pull up that thread a little bit why I can't vote for Spencer Pratt He doesn't live in Los Angeles really why doesn't he live there? Well, he had to move really why did he have to move well because the house burned down and there has Two years ago and they haven't built it back up yet and by the way He his permanent Mailing address where he is sending his mail and you said this I just really want to read it He didn't buy another house. He's crashing at his father's place. He has children by the way And so now he's saying he's gonna move an airstream onto his burned-out lot Yeah, still he hasn't been able to build that make everyone feel better. Yes. No, but the optics of that Are a gift to Spencer Pratt because he He can't be accused of Grandstanding or whatever because he'll say Karen Bass forced me to be here. So here I am Karen Bass is preventing me from being able to rebuild my house I am just like you. I also can't afford to rebuild or buy a new house. This is my home I'm here. I'm fighting for it and Spencer Pratt's political instincts are Extremely good so far. He's running a Fantastic campaign and this is nothing but a gift to him by the way the original Allegations of Pratt's ineligibility to be mayor was published in the LA Times. Oh, I'm sorry. Forgive me The El Segundo Times you see because the Los Angeles Times are not actually Located in the city of Los Angeles anymore. They live in an adjacent city kind of like Spencer Pratt But I guess they're ineligible to be the LA Times because And kind of like Maxine Walter waters and Eric Swalwell because their main primary residence is also not in California Do they really want to go down this road? Well, I'm I'm for it. It's different for them. It's different for them. It's 553
