Summary

The Blurry Creatures podcast features an encounter story from the Holland brothers, Heath and Hayes, who describe witnessing an unexplained creature on Hole in the Wall Island in Percy Priest Lake, Tennessee in 1996-1997. The episode explores themes of paranormal experiences, religious skepticism in the South, and the validation of eyewitness accounts in communities that typically dismiss such claims.

Insights
  • Paranormal encounter validation creates community and reduces isolation for witnesses who face widespread skepticism from peers and family
  • Religious conservative backgrounds in the South create cognitive dissonance around supernatural experiences, leading witnesses to suppress or rationalize encounters
  • Personal experiences with adversity (depression, anxiety) fundamentally shift perspective on others' claims and increase empathy for unconventional narratives
  • Detailed, corroborated witness accounts with multiple observers and specific geographic/temporal details carry more credibility than single-witness claims
Trends
Growing podcast platforms dedicated to paranormal validation and witness testimony normalizationIntersection of religious conservatism and supernatural belief systems creating untapped narrative marketsCommunity-driven validation models replacing institutional skepticism in niche content spacesGeographic-specific paranormal documentation using modern tools (Google Maps, satellite imagery) to corroborate historical accountsMental health disclosure as credibility mechanism in paranormal storytelling

It's got horns, like not a bull, but a cow. Double horns. Double horns, and it's got red eyes. And everything I read about this kind of stuff, they always have red eyes. It's got piercing red eyes. It was like LED before LED, and it's just looking straight at us. The history of our Earth is so different from what we can imagine. joy to journey the smithsonian and if they found out about a large skeleton somewhere was to go get it i'm going to assume at least one person is right because if one person's right it busts the paradigm it all goes back to the fallen chair and the problem with the modern day church they have a very truncated view of the supernatural this backdrop that's just pregnant with all kinds of meaning associated with this mount herman event Welcome to Holy Creatures. And this guy defects from the kingdom. That's a big deal. You're sitting so close to me. It's really... Whatever. We're excited today because we got an encounter story here live in the studio. Normally we interview the experts. You got to not say you guys aren't experts. I'm 100% an expert. But we got the Holland brothers in here because we love the Dutch. but you guys had a wild encounter welcome to the studio introduce yourselves and uh we're gonna ask your thoughts on bigfoot because you saw something maybe a song maybe we did we're ready i'm heath holland i'm a local here from nashville been around this area for a long time and live uh we lived in the percy priest lake area from the night late 90s into the 2000 time frame um um i saw a lot of changes in nashville nashville's not what it used to be that's not where our listeners thought you were going with that saw a lot of changes in that could be like weird paranormal stuff i guess that is that might have been that might have been what brought it could be it could have been what the boom started because we saw something yeah easily um weird stuff but We've seen a lot of changes in the city itself, but we do have an experience that was otherworldly. I mean, when we were going through it, I was stunned. I was younger and it made an imprint on my brain. I'm Hayes. Same. We grew up in the same household, same family. We have a younger sister, Nashville natives. He is my built-in best friend. Like, I love this man. He's the most godly, amazing man I know. And he's the more reasonable guy of the two of us. That's why I thought this would be really fun because I'm the idiot. We're the yin and the yang. And so we saw the same thing. One of us is. I'm the seatbelt when it comes to let's not do that because I think you're going to get hurt. And then he's going to do that. Sounds familiar over here. Yeah. Someone's got to push the gas and someone's got to yell. What are your thoughts on Bigfoot, though, guys? What do you think? What are our thoughts on Bigfoot? We ask everybody this. You're not skipping. Yeah. Oh. But that is this. So going back to- Keep going. Yeah. Going back to our story we'll tell. Let's do that. Let's get there. You just tell the story? Yeah. Well, do you have any overarching thoughts on Bigfoot before we get into your encounter? I think at worst, I'm agnostic on most things, not the Lord. I mean, most things like that, I'm more likely to believe I'm leaning more that direction, I would say, than most. But it's also because I saw some messed up thing that I can't explain. so Bigfoot yeah I'm going to say yes I will say yes generally I will agree with that I'm not going to put it out of probability from what I've experienced and what I saw as a kid I'm like yeah that's a measured response Eith that's good I'll have a lot of those I'm a seatbelt so bring us back guys where does the story begin Okay well let me I gonna say a few things first of all So this is when I was talking to my wife about coming on here with y This is the first maybe one of the first times that I ever told this I told this story 1000 times but coming into a situation where the people I telling it to I already had a sense of like well they kind of believe me already Like that never happens It like and I know everybody that comes on here and tells you these stories, like you're full of crap. I am full of crap, like absolutely full of crap. But I had some experience that I can't, I can't explain. And it's either is one of two things, but I want to say thank you for giving people a platform I want to talk about stuff because I listen to this show all the time. And like, if I hadn't had my experience one time, y'all get real personal. One time I went through depression, um, in like 2017. And until I went through that, I would have told you that if you, if you had struggled with depression or anxiety, that you're full of crap. You didn't have enough faith. God, uh, you, God wasn't a big enough part of your life. And so when I now, because I've gone through that, my perception is a lot different when I hear people that struggle. So in some way, y'all have a platform of like people that have seen something and they really saw something and they're not used to someone receiving that information. Like it's real, even potentially real. It's crazy to me. I guess it's going to be weird talking about this with y'all because I'm so used to you're an idiot. The pushback. Yeah, exactly. The pushback. Like no way. There's no way that happened. You were drunk or like 16 years old. I was a good kid. Well, I guess what's cool about this portion of what we do is that for a lot of folks, it's validating because they can – what inevitably is happening is folks that will have – someone will be listening who has something very similar and will say, that happened to me as well. And it becomes a validation saying maybe I wasn't crazy. Even though everyone thinks I'm crazy because of what I saw, you know there's there's some sort of community and not not being alone and and having a a wild paranormal but you're a couple of southern natives so you have that going against you sorry a lot going against us so you got to really you got to really describe the story in detail guys so that the skeptics out there might give you a chance it's going to be very very detailed all right i gotta i'm going to qualify one other thing because it's important to where how this all works. We grew up in a very religiously conservative house. So like most people in the South, we don't do good with, you know, I was listening to y'all's N.T. Wright thing the other day where supernatural, like we don't even like that word, like in the South. Yeah. We don't mess with the Holy Spirit. We have no idea what to do with him, especially in the tradition we came up in where we want control and you can't control the Holy Spirit. And then there's a lot of, you watch people take advantage of people that have an encounter with the Holy Spirit or think you're full of crap because they've never experienced something. So anyway, that's kind of the background we come up in. And so now, so this is where we come from. Okay. So the story goes like this. So we grew up homeschooling and our dad was a doctor full-time and then a youth minister part-time and both of our granddad's to say pa maybe oh yeah he'd probably want us to say that now he would um pa yeah you're probably right he wasn't that important he wasn't a doctor i lied to you he just worked under someone else's license yeah exactly yeah so because we homeschooled and my dad had this really flexible job we would go camping like our whole life growing up was camping on and specifically of island and you can pull this up Like I wanted to show you everything. It's called Hole in the Wall Island. If we go to Google Maps. J.Parsi Priest Lake. This was our childhood. We would go out there every weekend in the summer, and we'd take these giant groups of teenagers because my dad's a youth minister, and my dad lived out his faith, and so we would take the olive. Big pontoon boat. How big is Hole in the Wall Island? What do you say? Mile long, but it gets narrow at points. So probably there's one spot where the one side of the island comes in an inlet and then it crosses through and it's like a probably a 15 foot just walk path. So but then it's a mile length wise. Well, you can camp out there. But very narrow. We are going to do a camp where we go out here and we do this together. Okay. I think that be hilariously fun Well it local It easy And a little bit scary with gas Oh you inviting us to this I think we should do it I think it should be a thing All right Are we looking for Bigfoot or are we jumping off I don know No no I don't know if we saw a Bigfoot. Let's get to that. What year is this? 97. I'm 17. Six or seven. Six or seven. 96 or 97. Okay. So you guys head out to Hole in the Wall Island on Percy Priest Lake here. We've been there a thousand times. Probably literally a thousand times. And so this was a Wednesday night, and I remember this because my dad's work schedule and we all homeschooled. We would take these homeschool families out there. And so we go to our regular spot. Nobody had to work the next day or go to school because we're homeschooling. This is school, right? We're going to do educational camping. Campfires and cooking and living. Yep. So we go. We do our thing. My future wife is there and her family and a couple other really close friends. Well, we're the oldest. My brother and I are the oldest. And we have another friend whose name is Seth. And so it's our tradition or whatever. Every time we went camping, we would go explore. We're teenage boys. So we got tired of jumping off the cliffs and swimming. So we want to use our feet to exercise. And so then that's when we're walking this whole area. That's what time of day is when to explore 10 o'clock in the morning, 10 o'clock in the morning. Yeah. So my dad, summertime, summertime, my dad had come. he had taken a group back to the dock so they could leave and he left me and Hayes and Seth on the island. Just said, y'all do what y'all want until I get back. How do you get to the island? Which was not uncommon. A pontoon boat. So we have a 24 foot pontoon boat. Can you go to an aerial view of the island? That might be helpful. I can point out a couple things. Ben, what are you doing? I'm going to Google Maps. Thank you, sir. Ben made the episode. Everyone needs a Ben. Especially if Steve Kang's on. We'll take that. Yeah. That's right. Keep coming down. We can edit this. Bear Island, raccoon Island, pig Island. You see pig Island. And then to the right is this hole in the wall island. Look at all these. Look at all these islands. Yup. That's it. Have you ever been on Percy Breeze Lake? If you scroll in, get a satellite view of that. I didn't have any locals taking me. That'd be great. That's a shame. You guys just didn't like us because we were from California. That's it. So you see where the- Terrain. All right, here we go. This is perfect. So take your mouse south a little bit. See this little hole? Here we go. That dark spot? see it yeah right there right there right at the end of the finger yeah right there okay that's it zoom in baby we never even knew that that was something yeah this is so it turns out this is just back water like you wouldn't want to swim in it it's probably it's like a pit it's it's weird it's not brackish it's just fresh water yeah yeah but nonetheless so we're we're kind of walking around this little hole or whatever you want to call it scroll back out and then uh go there's uh go up a little bit. Sorry. Yeah. Right into the middle of that island. Right there. There's where the cliffs are. And there's that little walkway I was talking about where you can kind of walk through. Well, if you walk north into the, if you're east there, then the cliffs are on the right side right here where we were initially. And that's where we would camp. And so we would walk all the way around and take that land to the left to go south. Good. And we would walk all the way around keep coming down the edge of this whole island okay because most of it's pretty thick and brush and trees yeah trees and yeah all kinds of and poison ivy what other stuff we didn't want so we just walked this whole edge and we were just exploring and then we came across this one spot right there what year is this 96 97 i was 17 probably i'm 45 i can't know i was 14 i think somewhere in there somewhere in there but we end up to this this area we're smarter you know you guys were smarter and we don't have any social skills so that's the trade-off exactly but i can start a fire that's all right we'll try to bring some of that and you bring the you bring the brains we'll bring the social perfect yeah all right cool i just bring the gas okay so you're down there okay this takes like 20 25 minutes 30 minutes just to walk from where we were to this point around this whole island area. So we had, and we knew with my dad gone, he had to drive the boat. It would give us an hour before he got back and then he would take us home. Yeah. And there's nobody else. This is a Thursday. There's nobody else on this island. It's just us. And so at the top of this hole, we're walking around the edge of this, whatever you want to call it. And I in the front because I the oldest And that just you know it the 90s This is the dead of the summer Yes I would say August Late August Somewhere in there So it still grown Yeah, it's green everywhere. Because it gets pretty overgrown here in Tennessee. Yeah, it does. Especially when you don't take care of it. It's not like the winter where you can see everything. No, not at all. So I'm in the front. And I stop in my tracks. And this is a little bit of a rise. Like the typography or whatever you want to call it. it's a little bit of a hill area it's a little bit of a hill so I look up and next to this giant tree and it's a big tree as big as the door there stands this Chewbacca like creature only it's got really dark fur it's not like Chewbacca's color it's got horns like not a bull but a like a cow double horns and it's got red eyes and everything I read about this kind of stuff they always have red eyes it's got piercing red eyes it was like LED before LED Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. .
